Continuous integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling work is conducted in Pyrometallurgy Innovation Center (PYROSEARCH). The target is to develop a tool, which is capable to predict the compositions of phases, phase equilibria and enthalpy balance for pyrometallugical processes with higher accuracy. All these can be achieved by thermodynamic calculations based on Gibbs energy minimization algorithm. Recent developments made it possible to predict important factors, such as the chemical solubility of Cu in slag as a function of matte grade, temperature, P(SO2), Fe/SiO2 ratio in slag, wt% Al2O3, CaO and MgO in slag. In industrial practice, it is not only chemical solubility, but the overall amount of slag, which affects the recovery of copper and other valuable metals. It will also impact the energy balance. The presence of solids in the slag matrix influences the physical entrainment of matte in slag. Oxygen enrichment which is sometimes used to control the temperature of the furnace, may also affect the volatilization of minor elements into the gas phase. Same is true if additional fuel is used to compensate for heat balance. In other words, all key process parameters mentioned above are interrelated. Present study demonstrates the ways thermodynamic modelling can be used to link those process parameters on the example of copper smelting. INTRODUCTION Research methodology involving integrated thermodynamic modelling and experimental approach has been recently reported by the authors (Shishin, Hayes, & Jak, 2018 Shishin, Hidayat, Jak, Decterov, & Belov, 2016). Present paper reviews the updates and discusses challenges in the development of a large self- consistent thermodynamic database. The database covers the Al-Ca-Cu-Fe-Mg-O-Pb-S-Si-Zn-(Ag, As, Au, Bi, Ni, Sb, Sn) chemical system. The database works in the environment of FactSage software Bale et al., 2016 and related family of products: ChemApp (Petersen & Hack, 2007), ChemSheet and SimuSage. A list of phases, and thermodynamic models is shown in Table 1. For the copper industry, most important phases are Gas, Slag, Spinel and Liquid matte/metal/speiss. Black-colored elements represent the base system, elements in green can be considered as slag modifiers (slagging elements), and elements in red are minor. Ni is highlighted because it was included recently, in 2019, and currently under development. In addition to copper, the database covers the conditions typical for lead and zinc pyrometallurgical extraction. It is developed in consistency with the experimental results for high concentrations of Pb and Zn. Examples of applications in the present study include the thermodynamic analysis of fluxing for an agitated copper reactor to show the effect of Fe/SiO2, and calculations of copper slag cleaning using reductant.

Langenecker has reported significant reduction in strength of high-strength metals during ultrasonic t'ibration. Decreases in static yield stress an order of magnitude greater than the calculated stress amplitude of vibrations were reported by him for a stainless steel and for tungsten. in the present work, attempts were nzadc to verify such large reductions in yield and flats stresses using resonant librations of measured amplitudes. The results show that both the soft metals (copper and aluminum) and the high-strength metals (sleels) hare reductions in yield and .flow stresses no larger than the stress amplitude of libration. BLAHA and Langenecker,' investigating the effect of vibratory stresses on the deformation of zinc and aluminum, found a decrease in the static yield and flow stresses approximately equal to the vibratory stress imposed. Langenecker later extending this work to high-strength metals such as stainless steels and tungsten2 found a much larger effect. In these metals the static yield and flow stresses decreased by an amount more than an order of magnitude greater than the calculated vibratory stresses. It was suggested that this phenomenon could be a serious hazard to high-strength structures in an acoustic environment, such as a large rocket at launch, or could be used advantageously in the working of hard-to-work materials such as the refractory metals. Langenecker and others3 have investigated the effect of high-amplitude vibrations on many metal-forming operations. The results have been quite favorable with usually a large decrease in the energy necessary for the forming operation. The processes, however, involve large frictional forces and it is not clear whether the decreases in forming forces are to be ascribed to decreased friction or to decreased flow stresses. The present paper reports an attempt to determine the effect of accurately known vibratory stresses on the static yield and flow stresses. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The standard multicomponent resonator technique for measuring internal friction has been adapted to allow simultaneous high-amplitude vibration, internal-friction measurement, and tensile deformation. This has been described in detail elsewhere.4 Longitudinal oscillations of approximately 50 kc frequency are excited in a multicomponent resonator by a quartz transducer. A second transducer measures the amplitude of vibrations. Fig. 1 shows a schematic drawing of the resonator and grip arrangement and the displacement pattern produced. Since the centers of the dummy bars are at displacement nodes, they represent points where attachments will not materially affect the vibrations. The force is applied by a standard Instron tester. The sample may be deformed while simultaneously vibrating at up to 104 strain amplitude. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The effect of high-amplitude vibrations on the yield and flow stresses of copper. aluminum, tantalum. a soft iron, and a stainless steel has been measured. In addition samples of tungsten vibrating at stress levels up to 10' dynes per sq cm have been subjected to static stresses near the static yield stress with no indication of macroscopic deformation. Fig. 2 gives typical results for 99.999 pct polycrys-talline copper. A vibratory stress of 7 x 107 dynes per sq cm is applied at points "a" and removed at points "h". High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

The influence of SiO2 on the reducibility of the CaO–Fe2O3–SiO2 system was fully examined in this study. The isothermal reduction kinetics of CF and CF8S (CaO/Fe2O3 = 1:1, wt% (SiO2) = 8) were investigated through thermogravimetric analysis at 1123, 1173, and 1223 K with 30% CO and 70% N2 gas mixtures. The reduction of the samples with 8% SiO2 was not only highly accelerated but also proceeded easily. Rate analysis revealed that CF and CF8S reduction occurs in two stages, the Fe3O4-to-FeO stage overlaps with the previous Fe2O3-to-Fe3O4 stage and tends to approach the following FeO-to-Fe stage with the addition of SiO2. The apparent activation energy values of CF and CF8S reduction are 46.89 and 8.71 kJ mol−1. Sharp analysis indicated that CF and CF8S reduction was expressed by the Avrami–Erofeev equation presenting a 2D shrinking layer reaction.

Juntas soldadas por centelhamento (flash butt welding) de trilhos de aço do tipo intermediário foram caracterizadas mecânica e estruturalmente. Além disso, ensaios preliminares de dilatometria foram aplicados ao metal base e correlacionados ao processo de soldagem. Os resultados indicam que o metal base atendeu aos requisitos da Norma AREMA (2013). A microestrutura de toda a região soldada é formada por perlita e os ciclos termomecânicos provocaram significativas alterações no tamanho das colônias perlíticas e na sua morfologia, com destaque às mudanças de espaçamento interlamelar em toda a junta e início de esferoidização na região de transformação parcial. Como consequência das alterações morfológicas da perlita, a microdureza foi significativamente reduzida na região de transformação parcial e refino de grãos. A taxa de resfriamento média após o processo de soldagem foi estimada a partir dos ensaios de dilatometria.

"The detailed understanding of the variability in process performance parameters within an ore body forms a key aspect of ensuring that proper decisions are made with regards to the economic viability of that ore body. To gain this understanding, various tools have been developed over the years, of which the batch flotation test is the most well-known and applied technique for investigating the flotation separation of ores. In this paper, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Separability Indicator (JKMSI) is put forward as a small-scale test, suitable for the characterization of the flotation separability of copper porphyry ores. It is demonstrated that the JKMSI can be a complementary technique to the batch flotation test, with the capability to further improve the knowledge of ore body variability. The response from this test has been shown to be sensitive to particle size and modal mineralogy, providing a critical link between flotation and upstream comminution activities. The trade-off between the fineness of grind and the recovery target can thus be evaluated to determine the minimum energy application required for optimal separation economics. The test is designed to utilize small sample quantities of various sizes, providing an opportunity to increase our understanding of ore variability through increased tests. This complements our ore body knowledge and combining this with efforts in comminution (Powell, 2013) provides a platform for extending the concept of flexible circuit design."

Laboratory and field work on the use of wetting agents for suppression of colliery dust is described. Although the results were inconclusive they were not discouraging and further investigation is required. The use of certain wetting agents may constitute a healthhazard.INTRODUCTIONCoal dust presents explosion and health hazards to the coal mining industry. The problem of dust suppression is particularly acute where water alone is unsatisfactory for this purpose. Data acquisition is widely used for controlling flash smelting furnaces. A Romanian smelter from which a large amount of data can be collected uses such a technique. A computer program was developed for interpretation of the data. Inputs to the program are the process data files. Abnormal data are identified using standard statistical techniques; they can be edited if necessary. The following methods can be used for the analysis: linear correlation (single or multiple), polynomial correlation or comparison of two average values. Time variation graphs and histograms can be displayed. The random balance method was used for determination of significant parameters influencing the process performance. Not all process parameters are recorded, and some of them are not even measured. The software can compute some of these parameters such as: air flow rate required and the oxygen content of the gas: exiting the reaction tower. The software was used for the interpretation of a large amount of process data. The analysis showed that the process did not operate properly at some times.

Operators of mining vehicles are exposed to high levels of whole-body vibration (WBV) and are therefore at risk of developing vibration-related health disorders. For implementing an effective control strategy, it is imperative to locate the source(s) of vibration, and the specific changes that might occur to the vibration signals during its transmission through the seats to the recipient human body. With this objective, Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility (SEAT) values of seat modules used in dumpers (n = 10) and other heavy earth-moving machines (n = 11) were evaluated in an iron ore mine. Vibration was measured simultaneously on the seat and on the cabin floor beneath the seat using tri-axial and uni-axial accelerometers. The study aims at determining the quality of seat modules of the transport and non-transport vehicles from the perspective of their natural resonance frequencies and capability of any such seat in reducing harmful vibration. The highest acceleration values were observed in the z-axis for all the dumpers. SEATrms values ranged from 78 to 133% and SEATvdv values ranged from 72 to 130% for the dumpers. For other HEMMs, SEATrms values ranged from 55 to 125% and SEATvdv values ranged from 56 to 123%. Mechanical vibration contains multiple frequency components. To understand the changes taking place to the different signals at these frequencies, 1/3 octave band analysis was carried out for the signals recorded both on the seat and the floor. There was significant attenuation (38 to 57%) at 4 Hz for three Dumper seats, whereas they resonated in the range of 1.6–2.5 Hz. The transmissibility(%) in the resonating frequencies ranged from 108 to 156%. Resonance frequencies for the remaining seven dumpers ranged from 3 to 8 Hz. The spine has been reported to resonate at 4 Hz, whereas resonance at 1.6 Hz has little significance to human beings in regard to WBV of a seated person. Hence, the characteristic resonant frequency of 4 Hz of seats as observed in the present study has the potential of causing adverse impacts on spinal health. Evaluation of SEAT factors and resonance characteristics of seats are therefore recommended to be examined while selecting a mining vehicle for regular deployment in mines.

Several methods for the preparation , purification , and reduction of thorium tetrachloride are discussed . Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorination of decomposed thorium nitrate or oxalate with carbon tetrachloride or phosgene . tion of the crude tetrachloride was achieved by multiple distillations or by filtration of the molten chloride . It was found that high - purity thorium metal could be prepared by sodium reduction of thorium tetrachloride if chloride of sufficient purity were available . Byproduct salts and excess reductant were removed by vacuum distillation , and the resultant thorium metal sponge was consolidated by consumable - electrode or fixed - electrode arc melting . It was demonstrated that metal prepared by this method could be fabricated into bar , rod , or sheet , at room temperature .

Small-scale laboratory mineral-dressing studies were made on a total of nine individual or composite samples of manganese-bearing material from the west-central Arkansas, or Mena, district. Of these, only three yielded concentrates that would probably be acceptable for purchases by the Federal Government fur the National Stockpile. Concentrates from some of the other properties, however, contained more than 40 percent Mn and might be merchantable to other purchasers of manganese ore. In most instances, a too-intimate association of manganese oxides and gangue is conducive to low grade, low recovery, or both, so that mechanical concentration processes do not promise much for this district.

Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. Equipment capital operating costs represent a significant portion of the total cost of most mining operations, and a variety of computerized methods have been developed to assist in the selection and effective use of this equipment. The questions to be answered and the tools available to answer these questions vary with the type of mine to be analyzed, the stage of development of the mining venture, the size of the operation, the details required, and the technical or economic objectives to be reached. Even though a majority of publications are directed towards open pit mining operations, the underground environment is not neglected. In the early planning stages of a mining venture, equipment selection is the problem to be solved. The simplest computer systems are designed to' automate time consuming manual tasks. A data base is supplied to and maintained by the user, which describes the technical and economic characteristics of available equipment. The user specifies the physical environment within which the equipment will be used and chooses from the data base a combination of loading and transport equipment. The role of the computer is to detemine the production which will be likely reached, the associated costs, and other relevant statistics. This approach is most helpful when modeling small operations or isolated parts of larger operations.

As the problem of inclusions in steel has become increasingly important, more and more attention has been paid to the source of the oxide inclusions in steel. In killed steels the oxide inclusions are traceable to the reaction of deoxidizers with the iron oxide dissolved in the steel during the refining period of the open-hearth heat. In a large class of steel known as "rimming steel" the action of the steel during solidification depends entirely on the gas evolved, and this evolution in turn is controlled by the amount of iron oxide in the liquid steel in the mold. It is therefore of great importance to be able to determine the amount of iron oxide dissolved in steel and to devise methods for the control of iron oxide in any class of steel. The object of the present investigation was to obtain a true value of the oxygen content of liquid steel. If the steel has not been deoxidized, the greater percentage of the oxygen is present as iron oxide in solution.

An efficient enrichment of primary silicon from the Al–Si melt can be beneficial for the Si purification and the cost reduction of the solvent refining process. In this paper, an alternating magnetic field was used to enhance the mass transfer and promote the crystal growth of primary silicon during the directional solidification of hypereutectic Al–Si alloy. The results show that the growth rate and morphologies of Si crystals changed continuously along the directional solidification direction. With the decreasing of Si content in the melt and the weakness of the electromagnetic stirring, the crystal growth rate of primary silicon gradually decreased and the Si morphologies changed from planetocellular ,cellulardendrite, and columnardendrite, respectively. This provides a deeper understanding of the Si crystal growth during the electromagnetic solidification, which will be good for achieving a high-efficiency enrichment of primary silicon in Al–Si melt.

Compacts of crushed waste window glass, fluorescent tubes, drinking glasses and laboratory glass wares were made at various proportions from 106 microns and minus 75 microns powders in combination with 5% bentonite as binder for each glass type, after several trials to determine compatibility of particle sizes. They were made using the uniaxial press at 10,000 psi and sintered at a temperature range of 700- 750oC. The results showed anisotropic shrinkage behavior for all the samples, exhibiting an axial shrinkage lower than the radial shrinkage. Sintered compact from waste drinking glass which comprised of 60% 106 microns and 40% minus 75 microns powders showed the least sintering shrinkage factor of 1.125, fused at 700oC and the highest shrinkage factor of 1.286 obtained at 750oC. This shrinkage behaviour connotes that sintering can be employed to utilize these waste glasses up to the maximum of 95% recycled glass content in ceramic tile production.

In this paper, the removal of fluorides and chlorides from blast furnace dusts by water vapor enhanced microwave roasting was investigated, combined with the advantages of microwave selective heating and based on a thermodynamic analysis of zinc and lead halides. According to proposed reactions in the process, detailed experiments were systematically conducted to study the effect of roasting temperature, holding time, air flow, water vapor flow rates, and stirring speed on the efficiency of the removal of F and Cl. The results show that 97.26% of F and 64.23% of Cl could be separated when the condition of the roasting temperature of 650°C, stirring speed of 80 rpm, holding time at 60 min, air flow of 350 L/h and water vapor flow rate of 8 mL/min was optimized.

When lying over 200-250m depth, many seams and surrounding strata are gassy enough to create mining difficulties , particularly in highly productive longwalls as well as in their development headings. In addition to the gassiness of seams or stra- ta in the outgassing volume around working, the shape expansion and limits of this one influences much the intensity of gas emission. These charac- teristics of outgassing volume differ very much ac- cording to the permeabilities of the seams and strata encountered by their fracturation due to mi- ning. Moreover, the shape of the outgassing volume is very much modified by the rate of advance of the face. In nearly impermeable deposits, gas flows from a limited outgassing volume. When the rates of advance of a face are medium or low, the shape and dimensions of this volume do not change very much and outgassing volume is translated progressi- vely with the face advance. This explains why, in the past, it was observed that there was for each seam an average steady specific emission of gas, round which the volume of gas evolved per mined ton or per mined unit area, calculated over a cer- tain time, was oscillating. Combined with a statisti- cal irregularity coefficient, this allowed prediction gas of emission and thus to take decisions for air ventilation, drainage, and eventually production.
