Most of the data on equilibrium constant and the deoxidations potentialities of those elements, considered to be stronger deoxidizers for steel than is silicon, have been calculated from thermodynamic data. The reason for this is, primarily, the obvious difficulty of obtaining direct experimental evidence of equivalent accuracy. This is an excellent use of the principles of thermodynamics and has given valuable data not otherwise available. Such results, of course, can be no more accurate than the physical constants used in the calculations, and one can never be sure that the basic data are either complete or accurate. In fact, as in the case with silicon,1 there are not only discrepancies among the calculated theoretical values of the equilibrium constant for deoxidation of steel but also between the theoretical and experimental values. It is highly desirable, therefore, to obtain experimental values for checks on calculated results whenever possible. If they disagree, both cannot be right, but if there is good agreement, their value is enhanced. The present work was done in an effort to obtain experimental evidence in regard to some of the common alloying additions but more particularly the so-called "strong" deoxidizers for steel. The method used was to determine the minimum concentration of the deoxidizer that would effect a certain definite degree of deoxidation in steel. The criterion of deoxidation was the change from the large globular Type I sulphide to the eutectic Type II as described by Sims and Dahle.2 This change is sharp and definite, and inasmuch as it can be produced with equal facility by aluminum, zirconium, and titanium, it is considered a manifestation of a certain degree of deoxidation and not an alloying effect. Ostensibly such a procedure could give only a comparison of deoxidizing powers and no absolute values. Nevertheless, repeated observations have shown that, when increasing increments of aluminum are added to a steel, the residual aluminum content begins to increase simultaneously with the appearance of Type II inclusions. Thus it seems warranted to postulate that the Type II inclusions appear coincident with the virtual elimination of FeO as an active constituent of the steel. Experimental Procedure The data obtained were primarily from the microexamination of polished and unetched specimens and from chemical analysis. Experimental heats weighing 200 to 250 lb were made in a basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace. The base composition was nominally that of a medium-carbon casting steel to which the appropriate additions were made. Specimens were poured into sand-cast ingots 3 in. in diam as shown in Fig 1. Sand-cast ingots were used to prevent chilling and to allow sufficient time in freezing for normal inclusions to form of a size large enough to be studied readily. In the first few heats, the tapered wall ingot was used, but in the majority, the extra large riser was used to prevent piping in heavily deoxidized steels. Specimens for microexamination were taken from the location shown in Fig 1, and drillings for chemical analysis were taken from a similar location. The procedure was to melt the base composition and deoxidize with the usual manganese and silicon additions and then to pour an ingot. The furnace was then tilted back, and the first increment of strong deoxidizer or special alloy was added and allowed to disseminate through the melt, with enough power on to hold the temperature constant, for 45 sec. Then a second ingot was poured. After this, another increment was added, and after the same holding time another ingot was poured. In this way from 9 to 12 ingots were poured from each heat, each successive ingot having progressively larger total additions of alloy. Eighteen heats were made altogether, and the range of alloys used and additions made are outlined in Table 1. The three principal types of sulphide inclusions found are illustrated in Fig 2. The globular Type I sulphides are characteristic of silicon-killed steels, the eutectic Type II are characteristic of steels deoxidized with a small amount of aluminum, while the larger, angular Type III are usually found in steels with a residual aluminum content above about 0.02 pct. In all specimens studied, the transition from Type I to II either did not occur at all or was very abrupt and clear cut. There never was any doubt as to just which increment produced the change, although the individual additions were small, in the order of 0.01 pct. The change from Type II to Type III was considerably less sharp, and, in some cases, both types were found together. Inasmuch as the formation of Type III sulphides is apparently not a deoxidation phenomenon, they will not be discussed here.

Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by allowing assets to be used more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the “productivity paradox,” where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the benefits are in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that re-engineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors, but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes, such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships, can be adequately transposed into a mine setting. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn, require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manager training simulators. This paper reviews some of the latest IT products and outlines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

From 1955 to 1958 the Phillips Petroleum Co. conducted a series of small scale counterflow combustion field tests in a tar sand about 60-ft deep and 6 to 12-ft thick near Bellamy, Mo. A total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern, were employed. Electric heaters, gas burners and wellbore fuel packs were tested as counterflow ignition devices. Direct drive ignition followed by reversal to counterflow operation was not possible in this case because of formation plugging by the semi-solid tar during the direct drive phase. Sustained counterflow burning was achieved with wellbore fuel packs under conirolled conditions which permitted close correlation of fire front velocity, air velocity, air-oil ratios and yields for a wide variation in process parameters. The tar in place was about 10' APl with a reservoir viscosity greater than 500,000 cp. The composite oil prodlcct was 26' API with a viscosity in the range of 5 to 15 cp. Vertical sweep efficiency in the line drive pattern was essentially 100 per cent, with no evidence of gravity segregation. Original tar in place ranged between 800 and 1,000 bbllacre-ft, specific rock permeability averaged about 800 md before burning and effective air pemeability with residual oil and water in place (at the time of ignition) averaged 250 md. The volume of oil recovered during stabilized line drive counterflow burning represented about 67 per cent of the volume of tar originally in place in the burned out zones. A minimum was found when air-oil ratios were plotted against formation air velocities, and a limiting air velocity existed below which the counterflow fire front reversed and burned back over its own trajectory, using the residual coke left behind. INTRODUCTION Early in 1955 the Phillips Petroleum Co. began preparations to field test counterflow underground combustion as a method for producing oil from high viscosity hydrocarbon deposits, such as bituminous (tar) sands. At that time all published information on the use of underground burning io increase oil recovery was based on the direct drive process, in which the fire front moved through the formatim in the same direction as the injected air stream. Such direct burning is not applicable to many heavy oil sands or to most tar sands because the heat-thinned native hydrocarbon congeals in the cold rock ahead of the fire front forming a gas permeability block which smothers the combustion. Laboratory experiments first demonstrated that this permeability blocking would not occur if the fire front and the air stream moved in opposite directions. In this counterflow (reverse) burning process the heated heavy oil or tar is driven back through the combustion zone. Here thermal cracking produces relatively light hydrocarbon products which pass through the heated rock behind the fire front (largely in the vapor phase) and are incapable of causing a gas permeability block.' Exploratory wring revealed that consolidated bituminous sandstones with a combination of tar saturation, permeability, thickness and depth favorable for experimental field testing existed at several points in western Missouri. By the fall of 1955, a test site for determining technical feasibility of the counterflow process under field conditions had been selected near Bellamy, Vernon County, Mo. — about fifty miles north of Joplin. The pay zone was too thin and too shallow to constitute a commercial prospect, but these same factors permitted controlled experimental operation with a small compressor installation and with a large number of monitor wells. These were needed for adequate observation of the underground phenomena at reasonable cost. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir chosen for the experimental field tests was a 124 thick section of tar sand extending from 49 to 61 ft subsurface, with shale and siltstone laminations sealing the top and bottom. This section was part of a larger 30-ft thick tar sand deposit which extended both above and below the test zone. Core analyses showed that the 12-ft sand was effectively subdivided into two approximately equal sections, with the lower zone being consistently more permeable than the upper zone. The most significant laboratory core data are summarized in Table 1. The line drive test which is the principal subject of this report utilized only the lower 6-ft thick zone, with the upper zone regarded as part of the 55-ft overburden. WELL PATTERNS The over-all field test program involved a total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern. AT first sight, the platinum group of metals seem of little import to we, the people," although actually the life of the common man is much influenced by them; this influence is usually indirect, hence his lack of knowledge and interest. He generally associates platinum with high-class jewelry and lets it go at that. Were 11e to go deeper, he would find that platinum metals play their part in his food supply, his clothing. his health, his transportation, his home. And the technical man is in general only slightly better informed, for he usually does not realize how necessary platinum metals are in the manufacture of the many construction materials and chemical products with which he is acquainted. Certainly, our daily lives would be profoundly affected if platinum were suddenly to become unavailable.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The theory of probability with respect to the failure of structures is discussed. It is shown that the probability of safety, probability of failure, and factor of safety are directly related to each other and that as standard deviation approaches zero, the probability curves approach a unit step function which can be interpreted as the conventional factor of safety. The factor of safety is numerically the ratio of the load to the strength of the material at a particular point or plane in an engineering structure. Mathematically, it can be illustrated as a unit step function undefined at the point where the factor of safety is one (Fig. 1). The uncertainty of variation of soil and rock strengths require factors of safety much higher than those used in other engineering structures. The factors of safety used are generally determined from past experiences with similar structures. However, the factors thus determined do not have any theoretical meaning or do not indicate any relationship to actual safety.' It seems, therefore, logical to develop a system with a sound theoretical basis to obtain a more suitable factor of safety for structures. An application of elementary theory of probability indicates that it is possible to relate this number to theoretical and practical engineering facts.

The present fuel situation indicates that, at least for the next 20 to 30 years, the burning of coal will be a main source of energy. All coal contains sulfur, which is converted to sulfur dioxide during combustion. The concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the resulting flue gas, for most coals, would exceed the limits established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Therefore, the sulfur must either be removed from the coal prior to its burning, or be collected from the stack gas before it reaches the atmosphere. There is currently a large amount of research devoted to methods of removing the sulfur from the coal before burning, or during combustion in fluidized beds with materials which trap the sulfur in the solid residue. The commercialization of these processes, however, is not expected in the near future. Flue gas desulfurization appears to be the best near term prospect of fulfilling current air quality control regulations. The lime/limestone wet-scrubbing methods are the most advanced flue gas desulfurization processes and will account for the majority of sulfur removal systems in electric power generation. There are currently at least 23 full-scale systems existing or under construction and 17 of these will use the lime or limestone wet-scrubbing process. (1)

Four native copper ores, two conglomerate and two amygdaloidal, were tested to determine their amenability to sorting. One of them, a conglomerate ore from the Kingston mine, showed a high sortability as evidenced by an 80 pct recovery of copper in the minus 6-, plus 1/2-inch size range. Using the Kingston as a case example, the cost of mining and concentrating was estimated for a standard case and five optional cases involving varying degrees of sorting. This analysis indi¬cates that the production cost per pound of copper can be reduced on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 cents per pound along with a significant decrease in capital investment.

A stepwise arrangement of flotation cells is the most common layout of a flotation circuit in the mineral processing industry. In such a design, slurry flows from upstream to downstream by means of gravity, and the middling products are returned to previous stages by pumps. This paper will introduce an alternative solution in which the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cells are adopted so that all the flotation cells can be placed on the same horizontal platform and no pumps will be needed for middling product transferring. The technology of the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cell will be described in detail, including unique features, the working principle and the related fundamental problems. The comparison of capital investment, operating cost and metallurgical performance will be made between the conventional stepwise arrangement and the samelevel arrangement technology based on industrial practice. THE origin of the watery vapors of vulcanism has always been an object of interest and speculation to the seismologist, and as theories of the genetic origin of ore-deposits have of late years been pretty well narrowed down to the expiring forces of plutonic action, the same question has had a lively interest for mining engineers and geologists, as is well shown by the discussions of the subject in our Transactions. The important part taken by volcanic emanations in the origin of pegmatites and quartz-veins, described in my paper, Origin of Pegmatite,1 and their latent power to concentrate into useful deposits such scattered gold as occurs in the Hartsel granite, make a discussion of their derivation but a natural third and final step. It is conceded that enormous amounts of vapor accompany volcanism, though perhaps we are apt to forget that steam has 1,700 times the volume of water, besides which the column seen over Vesuvius and other volcanoes is greatly mixed with air; the immensity of such volumes compared with solids and liquids is shown by the experiment of Gautier, who, by heating dessicated granite to 100° C., evolved from it uses 20 times, and steam 90 times, its own volume. Dana appraised the average amount of water left in ordinary rocks as 2.5 per cent. T. M. Read estimated that the Mississippi river carries to the sea annually 150,000,000 tons of rock material. If these Mississippi sediments, as deposited, contained 20 per cent. of water, it would be 600,000,000 cu. ft., or 4,500,000,000 American gallons, annually. Allowing the vapor suspended over a volcanic cone to be mixed with 80 per cent. of air, this amount of water converted into steam would replenish anew, every 9 min., a column 15,000 ft. high, 2,000 ft. in diameter at the base, and 10,000 ft. at the top. Read's estimate is only half of the amount given in a more recent and probably correct one .2

Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals and consequently this property is an attractive feature which makes it a leading candidate for use in electronic devices. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of a process for obtaining a deposited silver-coating onto alumina, for applications related to electrical-conducting devices and, ancillarily, catalysts. Alumina balls and plane substrates were utilized for the investigation. The coating process employed an aqueous arnmoniacal silver-nitrate electrolytes with a formaldehyde solution as the reductant. Modifying additives - an activator which would be expected to promote good deposition-characteristics onto the (dielectric) substrate and an inhibitor which would obviate homogeneous reduction (precipitation) of silver was observed when the activator-containing silver-electrolyte reductant constituents were combined. However, the silver-electrolyte/reductant system with inhibitor could be employed (at 80°C) to achieve a viable (subject to future research optimization) coating on alumina. The influence of the processing temperature on the deposition process was delineated during the course of the research. The morphology of the deposited-silver on the alumina balls was assessed by SEM imaging. A tape-peel test was employed, with the plane substrates, to semi-quantitatively characterize the adhesion to the alumina.

The time is no longer when a man can act as an independent unit; the appreciation of the interdependence of one man upon another has emphasized the importance of the social unit. Epidemics have made us recognize that even a man's health is not distinctly his own to control as he pleases. The physical examination of workmen previous to employment started with an effort to prevent the spread of tuberculosis, for tuberculosis may be detected in its early stages and cured. But it was soon found that many other diseases were detected and the saving of lives made possible. The physical examination does not mean the elimination of the unfit—on that basis it would utterly fail—but rather the measuring of a man's physical fitness and placing the man where he can do the best for himself, his fellow worker, and the company. Industry as a whole cannot expect to live up to the standard of physical examination set for the army, nor should it expect to do so, for in all branches of industry there are types of work that do not require the same amount of endurance as does army work, and the lacing of men with physical limitations in the work for which they are capable permits a higher average of physical fitness for the work requiring physical excellence. Objects of Physical Examination The objects of physical examination are: The early detection of illness, particularly at a time when a full restoration of health is possible; the protection of employees from infection caused by working in contact with contagious diseases; the discovery of a man's physical limitations, in so far as his possibility for rendering good service is concerned; assistance to the safety movement by eliminating association in hazardous occupations with men whose physical condition renders them likely to accident to themselves and others; and the lessening of time lost by sickness. Statistics issued by the United States Department of Labor show that 22.54 per cent. of idleness is caused by sickness, with an average number of 7.71 weeks idle; whereas only 1.66 per cent. is caused by acci-

Este trabalho tem por objetivo aplicar o conceito teórico e experimental fornecido pela mecânica da fratura dependente do tempo, para avaliar por meio do parâmetro de fratura C* suscetibilidade do aço ASTM A297 Gr HP-Nb, para resistir à propagação de trincas por fluência. Este aço é utilizado na fabricação de colunas de suporte de tubos radiantes de Unidades de Coqueamento Retardado, que operam por longos períodos de tempo em temperaturas elevadas. Os ensaios de fluência convencional e de propagação de trinca por fluência foram realizados na temperatura de 927°C, de acordo com as recomendações das normas ASTM E139-11 e ASTM E1457-13. Dos resultados das curvas de fluência obtida para diferentes valores de tensões aplicadas foram determinadas as constantes, A e n, da relação de Norton. Com os resultados obtidos da taxa de propagação de trinca por fluência, da/dt, em função do parâmetro C*, foi possível ser modelada a equação da/dt = 1,1x10-3(C*)0,78. A morfologia da fratura observada na região de crescimento de trinca por fluência no estado estacionário apresentou modo de propagação interdentrítica, típica de aços com estrutura austenítica bruta de fusão.

At the time this matter first came up in 1912, the National Malleable and Steel Castings Co. had seven basic-bottom open-hearth furnaces in its plant at Sharon, Fa., using fuel oil, then costing about 2½¢ per gallon. The fuel was satisfactory but its cost fluctuated widely, therefore the use of pulverized coal, which had been successful in the cement industry and in some metallurgical furnaces, was suggested. After a thorough investigation, and an actual trial on one of the open-hearth furnaces, to be certain that the siliceous ash in the coal would not seriously affect the basic slags, the management of this company approved its adoption and a complete installation was started. The conclusion had been reached that the success of the operation depended on pulverizing the coal to greater fineness than had thus far been accomplished, and all equipment was chosen with this in mind. A coal drier was deemed essential, and one of ample capacity and efficiency was selected, which has done all that was expected of it, working without failure and with very small maintenance cost, and is still in operation. Pulverizers The company demanded a pulverization of at least 90 per cent through a 240-mesh screen, with consistent results, and a machine was chosen that was grinding other materials than coal to the fineness desired. The control of fineness was obtained through a vacuum separator, and was governed by the size of the separator and the number and construction of the valves necessary to expand and direct the air current. These valves can be set to obtain any degree of fineness desired, and the result is consistent. Two machines were installed, each capable of producing 2½ tons per hour, 95 per cent through 240 mesh. These machines have done everything expected of them, have run continuously, and are still in operation. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments. The goal is to minimize the over and under design of mine roof support, resulting in more productive and safer mines. To obtain the necessary data on roof behavior and support performance, USBM conducted several field studies. Each study covers roof geology, stress regime, ground reaction, support interaction and mining environment. A consistent experimental design is being used. This includes measurements of roof bolt loads and roof movements. So far, 10 studies have been conducted in several geologic settings.

From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

Some observations on the kinetics of the iodide process are reported. The deposition rate is geometry-sensitive in a system containing a finely divided titanium charge. Further, results indicate that the iodine diffusion rate influences the velocity of the process. The nonvolatile iodide, Til,, forms in the hot filament zone, thus removing iodine from the cycle. TITANIUM metal of 99.9 pct purity may be prepared using a refining technique originated by Van Arkel and de Boer.' The purity of this metal, commonly called iodide titanium, exceeds that produced by any known process. In a recent application, the method was employed by Gonser et al.² to prepare titanium rods up to 2 to 3 cm in diam. In the Van Arkel-de Boer system, the relative influence of the fundamental mechanisms: l—production of titanium iodides, 2—gaseous countercurrent diffusion, and 3—decomposition, on the deposition rate have not been clearly established. Blocher and Campbell" have indicated that the controlling step in the process under practical conditions of operation may be the reaction rate of iodine with the crude metal. Fast' reported that crude titanium metal reacted with iodine rapidly, even at room temperature, in his apparatus. Little has been reported on the effect of gaseous diffusion or decomposition on the deposition rate. It is these aspects of the process about which this investigation is centered. An attempt has been made to separate these latter effects from those due to the formation of the iodides at the crude metal surface by a division of the experimental program. Reaction of Iodine with Titanium Apparatus: In the investigation of gas-metal reactions of this type, the chemical reactivity of the halogen and halide vapors dictates the use of all-glass apparatus. In such a system standard techniques for measuring reaction rates are difficult to employ. Here, a simple apparatus was devised (Fig. 1) so that some indication of the reactivity of titanium powder with iodine vapor could be obtained. A stream of iodine gas was evolved from a bulb of controlled temperature and passed over a sample of titanium powder heated in a horizontal tube furnace. The product of the reaction, TiI4, volatilized and was condensed outside the furnace in a series of four glass bulbs, each cooled to room temperature in turn. Preliminary experiments indicated that distillation was retarded in a sealed evacuated system due to a pressure build-up in the condensing end of the apparatus. Hence, the system was pumped continuously using a mechanical pump and two oil diffusion pumps in series, through a liquid air trap. The iodine bulb was made large and a capillary restriction was inserted between the titanium bulb and the condensers so that the iodine pressure over the metal would approach the equilibrium pressure over solid iodine crystals. The effect of this restriction on the evaporation rate of TiI4, was determined separately. The iodine bulb was heated in an oil bath controlled to ±2°C. The titanium bulb temperature was automatically controlled to ±5°C. Procedure: About 200 mg of —30 mesh titanium powder, weighed to 0.1 mg, was placed in the reaction bulb after part B had been joined to part A.
