Hydraulic cylinders a re used in several roof support systems, such as longwall shields and mobile roof supports, to provide critical ground control Many state-of-the-art hydraulic support systems operate at pressures as high as 7,000 psi to provide the necessary support capacities. Pressure in the upper stages of multi-stage cylinders can be intensified by a factor of 2 or 3 providing pressures of 20,000 psi or greater. A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. Likewise, the performance characteristics need to be fully understood to evaluate the impact of design parameters on the capability of the support to maintain effective ground control. This paper examines the basic operating principles of state-of-the-art hydraulic cylinders and discusses relative issues pertaining to. (1) setting loads, (2) support stiffness, (3) yielding behavior, (4) errors in assessing support loading, and (S) hydraulic failure mechanisms and how to detect them

"The present work, likewise, deals with grain refinement of medium carbon steel AISI 1045 having different initial microstructure resulting from thermal and/or thermomechanical treatment (TM) applied prior severe plastic deformation. In case of TM treated steel, structure refinement was conducted in two steps. Preliminary structure refinement has been achieved due to multistep open die forging process which provided total strain Eef ~ 3. Uniform and fine recrystallized ferrite structure with grain size of the order of 2-5 µm and with nest-like pearlite colonies was obtained. The further grain refinement of steel samples having different initial structure was accomplished during warm Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) at 400°C. The microstructure development was analyzed in dependence of effective strain introduced ( Eef ~ 2.5 - 4). Employment of this processing route resulted in extensive deformation of ferrite grains where mixture of subgrains and ultrafine grain was found regardless the preliminary treatment of steel. As straining increases the dynamic polygonization and recrystallization became active to form mixture of polygonized subgrains and submicrocrystalline grains having high angle boundaries. The intensive straining and moderate ECAP temperature caused the partial cementite lamellae fragmentation and spheroidization as straining increased. The lamellae cementite spheroidization was more extensive in TM treated steel samples. The deformation behavior of for both steel structural state confirm the strength increase; however the work hardening behavior was modified with respect to initial structure of steel prior SPD processing.IntroductionIn the last years, ultrafine grained materials have attracted considerable research interest because they tend to possess high strength without sacrificing toughness and ductility. Microstructural refinement of steel is usually achieved by alloying and/or by thermomechanical treatment process, which modifies phase transformation. Recently, advancement of severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques provides another efficient access for grain refinement of metals and alloys. The fabrication of bulk materials with ultrafine grain sizes has attracted a great deal of attention over the past two decades because of the materials' enhanced properties [ 1, 2]. In last decade a worldwide effort in manufacturing process to obtain ultrafine grain structures in steels is persisting."

Commonly accepted maintenance methods are being outdated by the rapid acceptance and use of more complicated hydraulic circuitry on modern mining equipment. It is no longer adequate to use the maintenance program to merely repair or sustain equipment operation. Ever increasing operating costs place a huge premium on lost production time. It has, therefore, placed the maintenance programs in the position of being required to alleviate equipment malfunctions on production shifts and still attain the maximum unit life from each component part. Ireland mine of Hanna Coal Co., which operates two production shifts and one maintenance shift per day, performs hydraulic maintenance with a plan that is geared to assure the bulk of work being handled on the midnight or maintenance shift. Production is thus allowed to continue without interruption from major hydraulic component malfunction. The plan is called selective maintenance because the specific part to be worked on and the time the work is to be accomplished are selected according to a definite plan.

The effect of particle shape on true flotation has been widely reported. The present paper presents results obtained in investigating the effect of particle shape on the entrainment of particles during the flotation process. Different hydrophilic minerals with particles of varying aspect ratios were used and their shape determined using rheological tests and QEMSCAN. Their entrainment properties showed a close relationship to their shape with the recovery due to entrainment increasing as the aspect ratio of the particles increased. The effect of surface charge, by changing pH, and size of particles showed that the effect of shape was sustained at different pHs and particle sizes. Proposals are made to explain these observations in terms of the known relationships between drag coefficients and terminal velocities and shape. Since it has been previously reported that different milling procedures can affect particle shape, these results indicate that it is possible that such different procedures may result in increased entrainment of hydrophilic minerals.

The rate of copper corrosion in liquid lead was studied as a function of flow rate and temperature in a closed isothermal loop system between 350" and 500°C. Kinetic data were interpreted with the Nernst-Brunner equation and the Chilton-Colbum mass transfer analogy to heat transfer. Over the range of temperatures and flow rates employed the solution rate constant varied from 2 x 10-3 to 20 x 10-3 cm per sec. The rate constant was found to vary with the 0.76 power of the Reynolds number in the range 7500 < Re < 40,000. The results of this investigation indicate that the Cu-Pb corrosion process is controlled largely by diffusion across a boundary layer. particularly at the higher temperatures. The effective boundary layer for diffusion is found to be approximately three to four times smaller than the momentum boundary layer. CORROSION by liquid metals has long been a problem during melting, static containment, and casting. Recently, considerable emphasis has been placed on the understanding of liquid metal corrosion mechanisms in an effort to prevent mass transfer and eventual failure in liquid metal heat exchangers and in liquid-metal-fueled nuclear reactors. The present investigation was conducted to determine the relationships which exist between corrosion kinetics and hydrodynamic conditions in an isothermal loop containing a simple liquid metal-solid metal corrosion system. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for its simplicity and ease in handling. Previous isothermal Cu-Pb corrosion studies1-3 have been conducted in both static and dynamic systems but not under conditions which allow easy "scale-up" to engineering systems, such as liquid metal heat exchangers. On the other hand, most liquid metal loops which have been used to evaluate mass transfer rates4 have been driven with temperature gradients under conditions of natural convection and unknown flow rates. The primary contributions of this research are twofold: 1) to evaluate the design of a simple isothermal loop corrosion system and 2) to investigate liquid metal corrosion behavior under well-defined hydrodynamic conditions. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The apparatus used to measure the Cu-Pb corrosion rates is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The loop system consisted of 1) a reservoir made of Type 316 stainless steel containing a centrifugal pump and 2) stainless-steel tubing containing a removable copper test section. The copper test section was OFHC hard-drawn tubing, 11.0 0.05 cm in length and 0.775 ±0.005 cm ID. A Type 316 stainless-steel venturi meter* was inserted in place of the copper test sec- tion in order to determine the lead velocity as a function of pump speed at each temperature. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for this study because the solubility of copper in liquid lead is large enough to measure accurately but small enough that the diameter of the copper tubing was not changed significantly by corrosion. There are no intermediate phases formed in the system, and the solid solubility of lead in copper is vanishingly small so that back-diffusion cannot occur. Molten lead (corroding grade; 99.94+ pct Pb, 0.0015 max pct Cu) was charged from an auxiliary melting furnace into the system under an argon cover to minimize oxidation. The lead was then maintained at constant temperature by a stirred molten salt bath in which the loop was immersed to a depth just above the lead level in the reservoir, Fig. 1. The total volume of lead in the system was 320 2 cu cm.

Radioisotope X -ray techniques of analysis for nickel have been tested in laboratory and plant trials. In the laboratory tests. a comparison was made of radioisotope and conventional analyses for nickel in solid s samples taken from streams of a nickel concentrator. Coefficients of variation of 1.7% for feed and concentrate samples , and equal to 10% for final tailing samples, were obtained. Continuous determination of nickel in final tailing slurries was demonstrated in a trial lasting 20 days at a nickel concentrator (Western Mining Corporation), nickel being determined with a standard error of 0.036% Ni in the slurry solids within the range of 0.24 to 0.68% Ni. This error, obtained by comparison of on-stream probe analyses with assays of samples taken from the stream, includes errors in sampling and assay by conventional techniques.

The USACE geologists at the Bluestone Dam Phase 5 Dam Safety Assurance (DSA) Megaproject in Hinton, WV have employed the use of Terrestrial LiDAR scanning and photogrammetry for the purpose of mapping and documentation of stilling basin foundation conditions. Following the excavation and cleaning of a 60-foot by 60-foot monolith foundation, a Trimble SX-10 scanning total station is used to capture high density 3D scans, imagery, and survey measurements of the monolith floor and adjacent side walls. This data is used to generate high density point clouds of the entire foundation and sidewalls, which in turn facilitate the creation of numerous products that aid in the documentation and future assessment of the project foundation. These products include high resolution true color orthophotos, detailed topographic maps, excavation reports, and 3D models. Quarter scale orthophotos of the foundation and sidewalls are printed out and used as base maps for geological field mapping, allowing for greater accuracy and faster execution time when compared to traditional field mapping methods. Topographic maps, orthophotos, and data obtained from excavation reports contribute to the generation of detailed and accurate Foundation, Completion, and Geotechnical Reports, and will help inform the project Post Implementation Evaluation (PIE). Annotated 3D models, with the future incorporation of virtual/augmented reality technology, will allow design personnel, project delivery teams, and risk assessment teams to virtually inspect bedrock conditions and better identify any underlying geological conditions that impact post-construction performance of the project. This innovative approach has allowed project geologists to exceed the requirements for foundation mapping and documentation as outlined in ER 1110-2-1156. The quality and volume of spatial and geological data collected using this method has allowed for a faster and more efficient foundation approval process, reducing the time during which the foundation is exposed during construction and lowering risk at the project.

Gentlemen: The subject of this paper is: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS AND RECLAIMERS. Against an urgent world wide energy crisis, the role of bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers in the surface mining of fossil fuels and other ores has been raised to new prominence. This paper will review the reasons for the expanded application of bucket wheel technology, its unique contributions, and other factors relative to volume, cost, versatility, and efficiency. Today, surface mining is faced with the twin challenge of (1), accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2), replacing comparable high volumes of overburden back into the mined-out portion of the pit. Optimum quantitites for - a single electrical power plant now range from 5 to 15 million tons of coal per year. The use of bucket wheels offers the best method for meeting this challenge at lowest possible cost. For example, an advanced application that also satisfies environmental concerns involves the simultaneous functioning of two bucket wheel excavators during surface mining operations. Working at spaced intervals and different levels in conjunction with a transfer conveyor and stacker, one excavator removes the ore while the other one transfers overburden to a stacker that replaces it back into the open pit. The result of this continuously operating cycle is: (1) removal of ore and replacement of overburden back into the pit in massive quantities, (2) at accelerated volume and extreme low cost that cannot be matched by conventional loading machines of any size, and (3) fulfills a basic environmental requirement which is to

In order to improve the thermal environment in deep coal mines, two principles can be applied: firstly, the reduction of heat flow into the air stream, and secondly, cooling of the air current. First of all one should try to minimize the heat-flow rate into the air stream underground by the mining method itself. German coal mines prefer the caving system of advance longwall mining simultaneously on several levels with ascensional ventilation. The effects of descensional ventilation and different face ventilation layouts on the thermal environment are discussed, besides the effects of pneumatic and hydraulic stowing. Application of all mentioned possibilities together instead of today&apos;s common mining method would reduce the Basis Effective Temperature considerably. In the future, hydraulic haulage of the raw coal underground substituting belt conveying may be a mean to improve the thermal environment further on. If the working depth of a coal mine exceeds about 1 000 m, cooling of the air stream under-ground will be necessary in addition to the above- mentioned measures. Generally, in German coal mines different types of indirect-contact air coolers located nearby the face are used. Besides such so-called cooling coils, large-capacity spray coolers are used because they work more efficiently if a great cooling duty is demanded. Common designs of both air cooler types and their possible utilizations are demonstrated. Deep coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany need up to 30 MW of total cooling capacity. Mostly, the needed chilled water is cooled by large-capacity refrigeration plants placed on surface, underground or in combination of the above locations nearby the shaft. Due to the increasing underground cooling demand, the distribution of the chilled water and the control of the air coolers become more important. The conception of a control system is discussed, which is based on the control of the single air coolers. All air coolers of a mine are controlled so as to optimize the supply water-flow rate with regard to the demanded cooling duty of the coolers. On the next upper level of the control system the whole chilled water network and finally the refrigeration plant is regulated. Present research work deals with the use of ice for cooling mines. There are some unsolved problems in this new cooling concept. Some aspects of making, transporting and storing ice are described. The use of ice may probably reduce the cooling costs of German collieries, which are at present approximately 4 DM per ton of saleable coal.

To improve the pumping capacity and engineering efficiency of fresh thickened tailings slurry, a high charge density superplasticizer was developed to improve the rheological properties of tailings slurry. The effects of superplasticizer content, the concentration and fineness of tailings, the proportion and type of cementitious materials, temperature, and hydration time on the rheological properties of unclassified tailings slurry and backfill materials were studied. The variation characteristics of the slurry yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy with different factors were measured by a Brookfield R/S-SST plus rheometer. The experimental results of fresh thickened tailings illustrated that the higher the concentration of the slurry and the finer the tailings, the worse the rheological properties of the slurry. The results of cemented paste backfill materials indicated that the rheological parameters increased as binder content and time increased. The rheological parameters decreased as the temperature increased. The addition of a superplasticizer reduced the rheological parameters and improved the rheological behavior of the fresh thickened tailings and cemented paste backfill materials, which was beneficial to the slurry’s pipeline transportation. This paper can provide technical guidance for slurry transportation in the backfill system and provide a reference for designing the superplasticizer used in tailings.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control f anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/ These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating before a dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

An attempt has been made on the concentration of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) from the converter matte material by microbial .leaching. Biological oxidation of base metal sulfides such as iron, copper, nickel and free sulfur present in the matte material using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is an alternative method to concentrate the PGM-and gold. The method which produces a platinum group metals concentrate is comparable to chemical processes and electrochemical process.

Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, 2. the lack of awareness about their proper use, and 3. the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

Thiosulfate is a green gold leaching agent that shows great potential to replace the highly toxic cyanide. Ammonia is traditionally used as the copper ligand in thiosulfate solutions to reduce the reactivity of copper ions towards thiosulfate, but it is a toxic reagent. As a result, efforts to replace ammonia with another complexing agent have received increasing attention. In this study, a novel alternative to ammonia is proposed to explore the potential use of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system. Experimental parameters include temperature, initial pH, copper, malic acid, and thiosulfate concentration. The feasibility of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system was discussed using Eh–pH and species distribution diagrams. Themodynamics analysis indicates that the mechanism of gold leaching in copper-malic acid-thiosulfate solution is mainly catalyzed by the Cu2( Mal)2H-2 2−/Cu(S2O3)3 5− redox couple. The capability of gold leaching in this system for processing the refractory gold concentrate is comparable to that of cyanidation and the traditional copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leaching processes. Thiosulfate consumption is greatly reduced in the presence of malate due to its strong chelating effect on the copper ions. Moreover, the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system demonstrates a significant enhancement in leaching kinetics, making it a viable option for processing refractory gold concentrates.

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today&apos;s complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company&apos;s dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. The Oglebay Norton Company has traditionally been a supplier of metallurgical grade fluorspar gravel to the American steel industry and, in the early sixties, fluorspar pellets were entered into the market. The gravel has been imported from Mexico, the pellets were produced by the Minerva Company in southern Illinois. While the acceptance of the pellets by the industry was satisfactory, overall marketing considerations caused the Minerva Company to discontinue the pelletizing operations. Thus it was that Oglebay Norton came to the decision to revive earlier plans to produce fluorspar agglomerates. A survey of the market and related factors led into two basic conclusions: 1) Because of steel plant safety considerations, flat, pillow- shaped briquets were preferable to easily rolling, marble-like pellets. 2) Briquets competitive with gravel could be produced by cutting imported, low-duty, acid grade spar to metallurgical grade by limestone and binders. A plant was built in Brownsville, Texas, and started operations in early 1970.

THE meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Annual Meeting of the Institute maintained the high standard set in previous years, and attendance of member: of the Division was at a new high. The impact of the war was evident not only in the tone of many of die papers but also in the presence at the meeting of many of our members now serving in the armed forces of our-country. Ken interest was manifested in all papers presented and the discussions which followed developed many additional facts of interist and importance. The first activity of the Division was the joint meeting of the Papers and Programs and the Publications Committees on Monday afternoon; at which time definite plans were formulated for a simplification and co-ordination of the work of the committees.
