The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. In the province of Alberta the coal measures dip at so many different angles, between the horizontal and the vertical, that many different systems of haulage are in use. I will, however, only touch briefly upon the general -systems in use, and devote the major portion of this paper to a discussion of endless-rope haulage and its adaptibility to various conditions in coal mines; dealing in particular with the endless-rope haulage that was installed at Brule during the month of August 1923. In coal seams that are approximately level, and newly opened, hand-putting or tramming from the face is the cheapest, but when the mine is further developed tramming is out of the question, and the use of ponies is the next consideration. The time arrives, however, when mining reaches a point where the economical haulage of coal by horses cannot be done profitably, and then some system of mechanical haulage must be installed. The installation of any system should be carefully considered before any particular type of haulage is adopted, because a great deal depends upon the grade or dip of the seam. Motor haulage is impossible to operate profitably on a grade of over 6 per cent and, while it is possible to use ponies, on short runs, up to 9 per cent, some other means of main and secondary haulage must be installed when a 9 per cent grade, is exceeded. I will, therefore, deal first with secondary haulage, because even though a main haulage is established, secondary haulage can be used to feed the main haulage.

Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery ACT (RCRA), generators of listed or characteristic hazardous wastes must find satisfactory means for disposal. of wastes. Initially, for many this meant landfills and deep-well injection. Until recently, mining and metallurgical by-products have largely been exempt from RCRA, but now are coming under its jurisdiction. With the increasing closures of landfills, companies in the U.S. such as electroplaters, miners, metallurgical plants and others are turning to recycling as an alternative to treat their wastes. While the cost of recycling has been challenging, the long-term economics prove attractive because recycling interrupts the cradle- to-grave responsibility for the waste generator. The present paper describes the recycling of hazardous wastes at ENCYCLE/TEXAS. Encycle extracts marketable metals from metal-bearing sludges and wastewater using hydrometallurgical processes borrowed from the mining and metallurgical industry.

Passage of the Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act ("PURPA") in I 978 created an entirely new industry that is referred to today as the Independent Power Producers ("IPP"). Requirements of project owners, environmental compliance, project design, the financial community and most of all, the need to be a low-cost producer presented a unique situation for the sourcing and the utilization of fuels. Depending on the specific type of project being developed, (e.g. coal-fired, wood/biomass, natural gas, petroleum coke or a blend of several fuel types) and the type of boiler design, it is important to acquire fuels that will optimize both the project's operating efficiency and flexibility. This paper will focus on the acquisition of fuel for coal-fired projects, but will describe the necessary steps in the sourcing, contracting for, and the utilization of fuels and transportation resources in the IPP industry today.

A new technique for the removal of tramp-elements from steel scrap has been required from the viewpoint of saving energy and protection of environment. In order to obtain fundamental information on the removal of copper, tin and zinc from molten iron, the extraction method by using of phase separation in the liquid Fe-Pb-C system was investigated at 1453K. A mixture of iron, lead and carbon melted in a carbon crucible separates into two phases of lead and iron containing carbon. The compositions on the miscibility gap in the Fe-Pb-C system are 95.4%Fe-4.5%C-0.1 %Pb and 99.9%Pb-0.I%Fe. The distribution ratios of copper, tin and zinc between the lead and the iron phases, Lx [mass%X in molten Pb]/(mass%X in molten Fe), are 2.2, 2.2 and 1.4, respectively. Seventy percent of copper and tin from iron scrap can be eliminated with comparable lead addition. Gold, silver and palladium are enriched in the lead rich phase, on the contrary platinum and rhodium are more distributed to the iron rich phase than to the lead phase.

The liquid phase mixing in Western Research Centre (WRC) pilot plant flotation column with diameter of 0.76 m has been characterized using a salt tracer. The process variables studied were gas and liquid flow rates. The response of the column to a tracer pulse input was monitored at three axial and two radial locations. For all the experimental conditions investigated in the present study, radial and axial concentration gradients were not observed. It is thus concluded that the 2 tph flotation column is behaving as a well mixed tank. This finding is consistent with the observed poor recoveries of coarse fractions in the column flotation circuit. Based on the findings of this report, it is recommended that several schemes of reducing the backmixing be implemented and evaluated for their effectiveness in improving the column recoveries.

The experience of the past five years has furnished opportunities to study and to partially explain the operation and some of the causes of the short blast of Warwick Furnace at Pottstown, Pennsylvania, as described in the paper read at the Lake Superior Meeting, in August, 1880.* The many inquiries concerning the details of furnace operation which followed the publication of the paper, and the expressed desire of furnace managers to be informed as to future operations of this plant, have encouraged the preparation of the following data. To make the record continuous, and add to the value of both contributions, the present paper commences where the review of a short blast of Warwick Furnace ended, and includes the data of another short blast of two months, and a subsequent continuous campaign of nearly five years, which, by comparison, we shall designate as "the long blast." Frequent visits to the plant in the five years, during which its operation could be studied, and correspondence with the manager, Mr. Edgar S. Cook, have given a knowledge as to general features and details, and the courtesy of the officers of the Company which has given free access to the books of record permits the presentation of data which it is believed will be welcomed by furnace managers. Interest will undoubtedly be increased by the remarkable results which Mr. Cook has achieved chiefly with anthracite coal in a furnace whose details of construction will scarcely be generally admitted as embodying advanced ideas, its height being but 55 feet, with a bosh diameter of 15 feet 6 inches, its bosh-slope comparatively flat, its crucible smaller than the average, and the heat of the blast never reaching 1000' Fahrenheit. At present writing the credit of the best anthracite blast-furnace practice recorded in our Transactions is conceded to be that pursued by Mr. Fackenthal, at the Durham furnace, and Mr. Cook, at War-

In a copper converter air enters the bath in the form of turbulent jets. The interaction of these jets with the molten matte is fundamental to the converting process. In the present study, an equation is derived to describe the trajectory of a gas jet in a liquid. Calculated and experimental results for air jets injected into water are in good agreement. The trajectories of air jets in copper matte are predicted. THE air injected through the tuyeres of a Peirce-Smith copper converter emerges into the bath of molten matte in the form of a highly turbulent jet. The air jets affect a number of chemical and physical processes occurring in the converter: i) Converting Rate. It is generally recognized that the production capacity of a converter is limited by the flow of air which can be injected through the tuyeres and by the oxygen efficiency. In turn, the air flow is limited by pressure drop considerations or by the amount of splashing within the converter. ii) Oxygen Efficiency. This depends on the dispersion of the air jet in the liquid bath, and its trajectory through the bath. iii) Mixing. The jets act as mixing devices by transferring momentum energy to the bath; in this way the heat generated by the converting reactions occurring in the jets is distributed through the bath. iv) Refractory Wear. The proximity of the jets, which are centers of heat generation, to the refractories in the tuyere zone may have an important effect on refractory life. Mixing conditions in the bath will also influence refractory erosion. v) Splashing, and Accretion Build-Up. The energy of the jets is not dissipated entirely in mixing the bath. particles of liquid are carried out kith the gas above the surface of the bath in the form of liquid spouts and droplets. These result in the undesirable build-up of accretions on the converter mouth, and dust losses in the flue gas. Despite the importance of the interaction of the air jets and the matte in a converter, very few studies of the fluid dynamics of converting have been reported in the literature. Metallurgists in the USSR appear to have been more concerned with the subject than their Western counterparts. Deev et al.1 studied the interaction of an air jet with aqueous solutions in a converter model and qualitatively determined the tuyere air velocity and tuyere inclination which produced the most favorable results with respect to good mixing in the bath, and minimum splashing. Shalygin and Meyer-ovich2 also examined the air-matte physical interaction both in models and in industrial converters; they concluded that in conventional converting practice, there was no significant penetration of the air jets into the matte layer, and consequently the converting reactions occurred mainly in a zone adjacent to the tuyeres. The behavior of air jets in a converter bath, and the aerodynamic characteristics of tuyeres are discussed at length in a monograph on converting by Shalygin.3 However, the description of the phenomena occurring in the converter bath is largely qualitative. The side-blown Bessemer converter for steelmak-ing is very similar to the Peirce-Smith copper converter. Among the few investigations of the behavior of air jets in the bath of a Bessemer converter are those of Kootz and Gille4 who studied splashing in the course of an investigation on the effect of blowing conditions and converter shape on nitrogen pick-up in Bessemer steel. They found that during blowing standing waves were formed on the surface of the bath; the amplitude of the waves increased with the depth and angle of tuyere immersion until the whole bath moved backwards and forwards causing heavy splashing. Kazanstev5 used a model of a Bessemer converter to obtain correlations between the axial velocity of a gas jet and distance from the tuyere orifice and the Froude number of the jet. shalygin3 used these results to calculate the horizontal penetration of an air jet in a copper converter; the penetration was defined as the distance in which the axial jet velocity decreased to 10 pct of its initial value. However, the rising trajectory of the jet was not taken into account. In the absence of quantitative information on the fluid dynamics of converting, the design of copper converters has been based mainly on operating experience. Such experience tends to vary widely from smelter to smelter., This is reflected in Table I which is based on data compiled by Lathe and Hodnett.6 Aside from a rough, and perhaps obvious correlation between the total air flow and converter volume, Fig. 1, no pattern emerges from the data. For example, tuyere throat air velocities vary from 215 to 465 ft per sec in converters of the same size, for little apparent reason. The air jet energy input per cubic foot of converter volume, which may be taken as a measure of the amount of mixing in the converter bath, also varies greatly. A recent analysis of converter data by Milliken and Hofinger7 has also revealed unexplained variations in operating parameters. It is believed that by gaining a better understanding of the fluid dynamics of converting a more rational basis may be provided for the design of converters. In particular, it is proposed that if one takes into account the desirable criteria of a high converting rate, high oxygen efficiency and long refractory life, there should be an optimum configuration of tuyere air flow for a converter of a given diameter. The present investigation is concerned with the form and trajectory of an air jet in a converter bath. The general theory of turbulent jets has been expounded by Schlichting8 and Abramovich.9 However, most experi-

Asbestos is a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals, the properties of which are not generally appreciated by the majority of geologists. A thorough knowledge of these properties and of the uses of asbestos is of fundamental importance in the assessment of the economic value of an occurrence of asbestos. The varieties of asbestos that are used predominantly by the manufact- urers of asbestos products are chrysotile, crocidolite and amosite but chrysotile constitutes 95% of the world's usage. It is the properties of high tensile strength, 'heat resistance and large surface area that make chrysotile asbestos the most acceptable of the mineral fibres. There are no known exploration aids, other than direct visual inspec- tion of outcrops in ultrabasic environments, that could be used in the exploration of chrysotile asbestos. The surface exploration of an occurrence of chrysotile asbestos is relatively routine, though it lends itself to a unique form of bulk sampling by the use of a twelve inch diameter diamond drill core. The laboratory assessment of the prop- erties of the actual fibre requires specialized techniques and tests to assess not only the amount of fibre present but also its length distri- bution, inherent strength, filterability, dust content and other prop- erties. The way a fibre reacts to milling will determine what milling process- es must be implemented to ensure a product that is acceptable to the asbestos product manufacturing industry.

The Bureau of Mines developed a hydrometallurgical method for recovering mercury metal from mercury sulfide concentrates. Sulfide flotation concentrate from the McDermitt Mine was leached in a cupric chloride solution at 80° C. The redox potential of the solution was maintained at 850 mV during leaching by chlorine sparging. Mercury extractions exceeded 99 pct in 3 h of leaching. After leaching, the pH of the solu-tion was increased from 1 to 4.5 to precipitate copper as atacamite. The pregnant solution typically containing 100 giL Hg was sent to elec-trolysis to produce high-purity mercury metal and chlorine for recycle. In a 200-A electrolytic cell operated for 24 h, current efficiency was 99 pct and the energy requirement was 0.9 kW·h/lb of mercury produced. Mercury removal from the waste stream was also investigated. Iron or zinc cementation, sulfide precipitation with H2S, and activated carbon adsorption all decreased the mercury concentration from 10 giL to 0.01 mglL, which is less than the Environmental Protection Agency limit on wastewater of 0.02 mg/L.

A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

The results of wear on marked balls, 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. diam are given. All balls were forged steel of practically the same chemical analysis and hardness. The results indicate that balls in a given mill for a given length of time will have equal diameter losses, regardless of size. IN order to determine the relative wear rates of several sizes of grinding balls, groups of 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. balls were marked individually and were charged, all at the same time, into each of two production mills grinding copper ore. The remainder, and vast majority, of the ball charge consisted of 2 in. diam, and smaller, white, cast iron balls. The original weight of each test ball was determined and recorded. Some of each group of test balls were recovered from the mills periodically, individually reidentified, and reweighed. The test balls were recovered during regular maintenance shutdowns, at approximately thirty-day intervals, so as to avoid disrupting operations. As soon as the weights had been recorded, each marked ball was recharged into the mill from which it had been taken. The test units were mechanically the same and theoretically received equal tonnages of feed. All of the test balls were of forged, alloy steel composition with only slight variations in chemistry that would not be expected to affect the physical properties. All were heat treated in the same manner to produce a high hardness, as equal as possible for all sizes and as uniform as possible from surface to center. Generally speaking, the hardness of the portion worn from the balls during the test ranged from 62 to 65 Rockwell C. The microstructure was, therefore, predominately martensitic. The method of marking the test balls consisted of forming a small, round hole, 3/16 or 1/4 in. diam, into the center of each test ball with a Thomas Metal Master disintegrator, which produces a hole in fully hardened steel without affecting the hardness of the surrounding metal. After the hole was formed, each test ball was individually weighed to the nearest gram and the weight was recorded. The balls were grouped as to size and each group assigned a code letter. The individual balls within the various groups were then assigned a number. A small copper disc was stenciled on one side with the group letter and on the other side with the individual ball number and dropped into the hole in the corresponding test ball. The hole was then plugged with a low-melting-point metal alloy, which could be melted out in boiling water. Half of the test balls in each group were charged into one mill and the other half into another mill, so that all test balls in each mill would be subject to, as nearly as possible, identical conditions for an equal length of time. Previous testing had indicated that the wear rates on balls of different sizes could not be accurately compared if weight loss, or percentage weight loss, were used as a basis for comparison. Fig. 1 is a graphic record of the average weight loss for each size group in mill No. 1, and it becomes readily apparent that the larger balls lose substantially more weight in a given length of time. Fig. 2 is a graphic record of the average percentage weight loss for each size group in mill No. 1, illustrating that the smaller balls definitely lose a greater percentage of their original weight in a given length of time. THE property of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is in Falconbridge township, approximately thirteen miles northwest of Sudbury. From the mine and townsite, a gravel road leads to Sudbury and a branch line of the Canadian National railway to Sudbury Junction. The ore deposit is at the southeastern corner of the 'Sudbury Basin'. It lies in a sheet-like mass, striking in an east-west direction, between norite to the north and greenstone to the south. The general attitude of the ore-body is vertical, but with frequent variations in dip of as much as 10° to the north or south. The deposit is very irregular in outline, the width varying from a few feet to eighty or ninety feet. In the vertical plane, rolls are frequently encountered. Gouge is very often present at one or both ore contacts. The norite to the north shows much jointing. The chief ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. The nickel content of the ore is usually double the copper content, average assays ranging from 2 to 2.5 per cent nickel and 1 to 1.5 per cent copper. The ore is of three main types: massive, breccia, and disseminated. The breccia ore, the most common type, consists of sulphides containing rounded inclusions of highly-altered country rock, which, in places, are so large that sorting is necessary in the stopes. In the norite, the breccia ore may grade into disseminated sulphides, which frequently are sufficiently concentrated for profitable mining. In places in the breccia ore, concentrations of solid sulphide masses occur. Until early in 1935, all mining at Falconbridge was by shrinkage scoping, but this method was found to be less and less suitable as greater depth was attained. When mining had reached the 1,000-foot level, ore drawn from large shrinkage stopes was found to have been diluted as much as fifty per cent by sloughing of the wall-rocks, caused by increased rock pressure and insufficient support. It was apparent that this method of stoping was un-suitable and -Mr. E. J. Martin was engaged to superintend the introduction of a method of cut-and-fill stoping.

"The need for suitable geotechnical characterisation of the rock mass for underground construction is evident. The enlargement project of Railways of the Generalitat of Catalunya (FGC) in Sabadell is a patent example.In general, it is uncommon to encounter problems in the identification and characterisation of certain relevant weak rock formations, which affect project designs. However, all materials should be properly studied, as mischaracterisation can lead to a suboptimal design, resulting in construction problems during the course of the work.Good quality rock is generally not difficult to characterise, but this is not the case for Quaternary or Tertiary cemented soils. Geotechnical investigations based on boreholes do not provide enough information because samples are often badly damaged during the drilling process, if appropriate techniques are not taken. The samples can be altered and may not be representative of the in situ?material.The design and construction of the extension to the FGC line in Sabadell highlighted the importance of the characterisation of Quaternary and Tertiary cemented soils, in particular their rigidity and its underestimation. The twin tunnel project had a total length of 5.1 km, including five stations with 3.5 km excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM). The remaining 1.6 km was constructed using cut and cover methods. The TBM portion of the tunnel had a bored diameter of 6.83 m with an internal radius of 3 m and 0.25 m thick precast concrete segments. Much of the tunnel alignment passed through and was affected by the presence of certain stiff layers of Quaternary cohesive materials.In this paper the TBM challenges faced will be discussed in detail. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE major cause of the deterioration of the open-hearth furnace as its length of service increases, is the melting down, or rather the slagging, of the checker-brick, together with the deposition of dirt in the form of iron oxide, etc., which helps to close the openings, as well as to slag the brick by chemical action. Any construction that will do away with the necessity of having the waste gases come down through the checkers will eliminate the main reason for their deterioration. There are some other well-defined reasons which are subordinate to the main one given above. Some of the defects of the present type of regenerator chambers are as follows: 1. The checkers cannot be cleaned while the furnace is in operation, nor can they be cleaned at the end of the run without taking out all of the checker-brick. This causes high costs for labor and brick. The labor cost is high because all checker-brick have to be handled twice. The brick cost is high because many of the bricks are spalled in the double handling, rendering them useless because a spalled brick will not stand up. 2. The top courses of brick become coated with iron oxide, etc., melt clown, and large amounts of dirt are deposited throughout the checkers, especially at the bottom. The draft of the furnace is decreased by the closing of the top and bottom openings, especially the top ones, and the entire working of the furnace is affected. If an effort is made to clean the checkers the dirt and brick falling down into the holes still further diminish the draft. 3. The distribution of the air or waste gases through the checkers is in many cases uneven, resulting in a lower temperature of pre-heated air and therefore a slower working furnace. Also, the passage of air and waste gases is so crooked that sometimes the chimney is not powerful enough to overcome the friction.

THE byproduct coke oven is the most important artificial source of fuels for metals melting. Its products are solid, liquid, and gaseous in form. The amount of coke and primary byproducts obtained per ton of coal varies with the nature of the coal. The following represents the results obtained in many plants: Metallurgical coke (over 3/4 in.) 69 per cent. of coal Domestic coke (1/2 to 3/4 in.) 2 per cent. of coal Breeze (under 1/2 in.) 4 per cent. of coal Surplus gas, cubic feet per net ton 6600 Gas for heating ovens, cubic feet per net ton 4400 Tar, gallons per net ton 9 Ammonium sulfate, pounds per net ton 25 Benzols, gallons per net ton 4 All of these products, except ammonium sulfate, have important fuel value. Part or all of the metallurgical coke may be crushed or screened to furnish additional domestic coke. If producer gas is used, there will be a surplus of 11,000 cu. ft. of coke-oven gas per net ton of coal. The use of coke in the metallurgical industries has been retarded by the mental attitude of writers who disregard the dependence of coke quality on the conditions of its manufacture. Terms like "byproduct coke,"' "beehive coke," "48-hour coke," and "72-hour coke" are only generally descriptive and tell nothing of the coke quality. For example, one writer1 stated that in brass-foundry practice, Connellsville coke is considered much superior to byproduct coke on account of the high sulfur content of the latter. Another2 says, "At equal prices for hard Connellsville coke and for byproduct coke at the foundry door, the hard coke is unquestionably cheaper. It will melt more metal per ton than the byproduct coke and requires less labor, as the byproduct coke is less dense and burns faster, thus requiring more frequent firing." "This paper describes the automation of a mine hoist ore loading pocket using a programmable controller. It provides an introduction to programmable control, and outlines the various modes and operating sequences of the loading pocket. A comparison is made with previous equipment to illustrate the increased flexibility, reliability and diagnostic functions that are gained.IntroductionLoading pockets have evolved from a couple of manually operated air cylinders to entirely automated systems. Early pockets were usually formed in rock, with loading and discharging regulated by air-operated gate s. Interlocks, added to this arrangement, prevented simultaneous operation of the gates and ensured proper hoist position . As the loading pocket advanced, it was recognized that gravity feed posed problems, often becoming plugged or letting water run through into the shaft. A belt conveyor was employed, eliminating the se problems and resulting in greater loading control. Weighing the combination of transistorized logic modules, replaced many relay systems. This elimination of moving parts and contacts increased reliability and reduced maintenance costs.As semiconductor technology progressed, there were major breakthroughs in miniaturization and reliability, and as a result the programmable controller was introduced. Programmable controllers first appeared in the automotive industry in the late 1960's. A system controller was required to replace the large relay panels in operation at that time. The use of digital integrated circuitry enabled these programmable controllers to automate processes with hundreds of inputs and outputs. Advances in electronics reduced production costs , making controllers for smaller application s viable .
