As a result of the rise in global demand for pure copper, there is urgent need to consider the processing of low-grade chalcopyrite ores. Ammoniacal leaching solutions have been reported as an effective and efficient leachant for the dissolution of chalcopyrite. This work reports different parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of a Nigerian chalcopyrite-rich siderite ore obtained from Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria, and assayed as 11.30 wt% of Cu. At the optimum leaching conditions (0.4 mol/L NH3-( NH4)2SO4 leachant concentration; 75 °C reaction temperature; 45 μm particle size), the extent of chalcopyrite ore dissolution reached 87.4% within 120 min. The dissolution rate was affirmed to conform to the diffusion control mechanism with the activation energy, Ea, of 38.84 kJ/mol and a reaction order of 0.661 for the leachant concentration being established. The leaching mechanism was affirmed by characterizing the raw ore and the leached product by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. Ascertaining optimal leaching conditions for copper using alkaline leachant is advantageous from the environment and economic points of view.

In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

WARTIME depletion of the reserves of iron ore in the Lake Superior region of the grade and character now being shipped down the Lakes was serious. The time has come to take stock of the resources that remain in order to plan our future program of supply for our blast furnaces and protect, as far as possible. the tremendous investment made in the Lake Superior iron mining industry. Hugh M. Roberts and William H. Crago have estimated the reserves of the Lake Superior region in the United States at two billion long tons. These reserve figures are of direct-shipping ore and those concentrates produced by methods now in commercial use or those methods that may be expected in the near future. In their estimate they have assigned 392 million long tons to the Michigan ranges (all reserves in long tons) : 112 million tons for the Gogebic. 140 million tons for the Menominee, and 140 million tons for the Marquette.

Jim Walter Resources, along with the Rock Mechanics Branch of British Coal and Strata Control Technology Pty. Ltd., is presently studying the yield-stable-yield pillar design in use at the Blue Creek No. 7 Mine located in Brookwood, Alabama. This paper describes the steps taken to determine stresses on the strata surrounding the pre-driven development entries. It also describes the installation and monitoring of stress cells and extensometers used to quantify the stress build-up and strata movement associated with the headgate pass of a longwall panel. The findings of this study will be used to design and predict the performance of a 2 entry yield pillar system in the Parkgate Seam at Welbeck Colliery in the United Kingdom. Stress measurements and strata movement data from No. 7 Mine and Welbeck will be used to develop a computer model that can predict the performance of such a pillar system in British mines. Jim Walter Resources will use this data to study the performance of the present yield-stable-yield pillar system in order to determine if conditions will allow the stable pillar width to be decreased while maintaining current standards of safety and production.

An investigatiott was conducted to study the influence of nitrogen, titanium, and zirconium on the boron llardenabilzty effect in a low-carbon constructiona2 alloy steel. The experimental steels investigated exhibited a significant variation in hardenability, the variation being dependent on the interactions of boron, titanium, and zirconium with the nitrogen. Only the boron not combined with nitrogen was effective in increasing hardenability. Titanium, and with lesser effectiveness zirconium, combined with available nitrogen, thereby protecting the boron. The hardenabil-ity effect mas related to an empirical expression for the "effective" boron content, P, deduced from experimental evidence of these interactions. The hardenabzlity effect reached a maximum at about 0.001 wt pct 0, and decreased somewhat as P increased further. The physical understanding of this relationship is discussed. FOR many years boron has been added to steels to obtain high hardenability. Although a great deal of research has been conducted on boron-treated steels, certain aspects of the boron hardenability effect have not been fully understood. For instance, the magnitude of the hardenability effect has been observed to vary markedly, depending on the steelmaking technique, even when the amount of boron in the steel was essentially constant. Furthermore, the optimum amount of this element to be added has not been definitely established. A better understanding of the boron hardenability effect is essential because too small an addition of boron is likely to be ineffective, while an excessive amount can cause brittleness'' and hot shortness. The findings of earlier investigations have shown that the hardenability effect cannot be consistently related to the amount of boron added or retained in the steel. Grossmann observed that in a 0.60 pct C steel the hardenability increased to a maximum with mold additions up to about 0.0025 pct B and then decreased with larger additions. Other investigators5 likewise reported a maximum in the hardenability at about 0.003 pct B. Crafts and Lamont, however, found that in commercial open-hearth heats of medium-carbon steel the hardenability increased linearly with boron up to 0.001 pct and remained essentially unchanged with larger percentages up to 0.006 pct. Other investigators7,' also observed a rather constant hardenability effect in the range about 0.0005 to 0.0035 pct B. These observations and other evidence suggest that the effectiveness of boron in increasing hardenability probably depends, in addition to the amount, on the form of boron retained in the steel, this form being influenced by the presence of other elements. Both oxygen and nitrogen apparently exert the strongest influence on the hardenability behavior, since, at the temperature of liquid steel, boron readily combines with these elements, thereby losing its effectiveness as most experimental evidence seems to indicate. For consistent recovery of the boron effective in increasing hardenability, it is necessary that the oxygen and nitrogen in the steel be either reduced to extremely small amounts by the steelmaking practice or neutralized by combination with other elements before the addition of boron. The importance of achieving adequate deoxidation prior to the addition of boron in order to realize the full hardenability effect of boron has been sufficiently emphasized by earlier investigators. Digges and Reinhart' and others have investigated the role of nitrogen and have shown that nitrogen also interacts with boron and reduces or nullifies altogether its effect on hardenability. Moreover, their work also demonstrated that the addition of strong nitride formers such as titanium and zirconium reduce the deleterious effect of nitrogen on boron hardenability by combining with nitrogen to form stable nitrides. Another element which has a pronounced influence on the boron hardenability effect is carbon. It has been shown7'10 that the hardenability effect of boron diminishes with increasing carbon content, and becomes almost negligible at the eutectoid composition. This observation is useful in comparing the potential increase in hardenability from boron of steels with different carbon contents, but is not relevant to a study of the effects of normal steelmaking variables. The amounts of oxygen and nitrogen in steel vary with the steel composition and steelmaking practice employed. Most commercia1 low-alloy steels are fully deoxidized by the addition of silicon and aluminum, or other strong deoxidizers, which adequately protect the boron from oxidation. In addition, one or more of the elements such as titanium or zirconium are usually added, either separately or in combination with boron, in the form of complex ferroalloys, to protect boron from combination with nitrogen in the steel. However, the actual amount and type of addition employed for a given processing requirement are usually selected by trial and error, and have a rather limited range of applicability. As a result, substantial variations in the hardenability of boron-treated steels are often observed in practice, particularly when the nitrogen content of the steel is a significant processing variable. Randgold ResourcesÆ MorilaÆs gold leach plant is subjected to uncommon æoxygen stressesÆ. Feed ores exhibit very high oxygen demands, primarily caused by iron sulfides. In addition, ore oxygen demand varies significantly over time, as well as between different feed ore sources. The inability of the Morila gold leach plantÆs oxygenation system to cope with these high and fluctuating oxygen stresses manifested itself in variable gold residue grades, and cyanide consumption rates.Management launched a Morila oxygen system review project during September 2009, with the objective of auditing the performance of the then current oxygenation system, against required performance parameters as calculated from oxygen demands of the various feed ore types and targeted dissolved oxygen levels in the leach train.This paper describes the systematic changes made since 2009 to the Morila oxygen system in four main areas: O2-supply plant, O2-volumes, O2-controls and oxygenation equipment. Data are provided on corresponding improvements in leach plant performance. Since start-up in 1972, many circuit problems have been encountered, most of which were related to the abundance of fines (-28 mesh), which the circuit had not been designed to treat. The major problems associated with the original circuit included excessive loss of magnetite, reduced throughput during periods of a high proportion of fine coal in the plant feed and low yield in the fine coal circuit. This paper outlines the coal processing circuit at Fording Coal Limited as it exists today, with emphasis on the changes to the original fine coal treatment circuit.

In this work, we examine the efficacy of Electrodynamic Eddy Current Separation (EECS) to recover valuable materials from end-of-life solar panels. Traditional rotary-based eddy current separators are capable of excitation frequencies of 1 kHz or less and struggle to economically separate particles smaller than 1 cm. A new design of eddy current separators has been developed at the University of Utah which has no mechanically moving parts. The design is capable of excitation frequencies up to 50 kHz, allowing sorting of particles as small as 1.0 mm. Recently, we have been successful in separating mixtures of Si/Al and CdTe/Al particles (1–3 mm) with recovery and grades greater than 85%, an energy demand of 68 kWh/short ton of sorted material, and throughput of roughly 10 kg/h. Current and future challenges utilizing this method for valuable material recovery from end-of-life solar panels are discussed.

CENTRAL mine ore consists mainly of galena and marmatite in a siliceous and rhodonitic gangue, the average assay values being approximately 11.5 oz. per ton Ag, 14.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 1.3% Ox Pb, 0.3% Ox Zn.Owing to the 1923 fire in the underground workings, much of the ore now being mined has been subjected to a certain amount of oxidation, as shown by the oxidised values above.This factor is of great importance from a flotation point of view, as a sulphide surface which has been subjected to the influence of oxidation is not as amenable to flotation concentration as a fresh sulphide surface. The importance of this factor is increased when a differential flotation is to be made, and, as in the case of Central mine ore, the sulphide, which is to be floated first, has been oxidised...

A qualidade de fabricação de tubos de aço sem costura está relacionada ao processo de tratamento térmico. O controle do comportamento dos fornos industriais de tratamento térmico é de grande importância de modo a garantir a qualidade do produto. É necessário conhecer os parâmetros de operação dos fornos, assim como suas influências nas variáveis de processo. Este estudo avaliou as extensões do efeito do tipo de alinhamento dos tubos no interior do forno nas temperaturas dos canais de fumaça, temperatura do forno, temperatura do tubo, pressão interna do forno, demanda dos queimadores e consumo de gás natural. Diferentes alinhamentos podem impactar no escoamento da massa de gás queimado dentro do forno e consequentemente ter um efeito nas variáveis de processo avaliadas. Para determinar o tipo de alinhamento mais adequado do ponto de vista da qualidade do material final e da melhor eficiência energética, testes foram realizados durante uma corrida em um forno de austenização, na qual se alternou entre os diferentes tipos de alinhamento, medindo-se as variáveis de processo estudadas. Os resultados foram analisados utilizando-se técnicas estatísticas, como ANOVA. Ao final observou-se que certos parâmetros são impactados pelo tipo de alinhamento do tubo, sobretudo a temperatura de fumos e pressão interna no forno. As variações foram relativamente pequenas, principalmente pelo fato da principal variável controladora do processo, a temperatura do forno, possuir uma dinâmica de resposta lenta.

While water represents a major proportion of the mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits, relatively little research effort has been committed to understanding and controlling the influence of water quality on this process. Historically, this probably stems from the perception of water as an inert transport medium. However, the changing attitude towards water as a valuable resource, has given impetus to increasing requirements to use relatively impure make-up water supplies such as treated effluents and a high proportion of internally recycled water. In turn, this has resulted in the need for a more detailed focus on process water quality and its control to minimise adverse effects on sulfide flotation. Along these lines, prior to commissioning of a new concentrator at their Cadia Hill Gold Mine, Newcrest Mining was proactive in examining potential water sources and the influence of water quality on flotation of their copper/gold bearing ore. An extensive water quality survey of all major potential water supplies to the concentrator was undertaken. The flotation performance of the Cadia ore in each of these waters was investigated on a laboratory scale. The results of these studies identified that water quality could indeed have a significant influence on the flotation process. Since operations at the Cadia Hill concentrator began, water quality surveys of both make-up water sources and recycled flotation circuit waters have been carried out on a regular basis. By doing this, a database of water quality has been established which can be compared with plant performance. In parallel with the water quality surveys, a series of laboratory flotation tests have been conducted using a standard ore and waters from various streams to monitor changes in flotation performance as a function of water quality. These tests have indicated that certain water types may have a significant influence on plant performance. More research is required to better understand the impact of water quality on sulfide flotation. This understanding will help operators to minimise adverse effects, while maintaining the best utilisation of available water resources.

FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. An example is presented to illustrate the joint effect of local reaction equilibria and mass transfer limitations, for reactions during ladle refining of steel. The example relies on some of the kinetic principles that David Robertson has employed to quantify many metallurgical processes. In calcium treatment of alumina inclusions in aluminum-killed steels, solid CaS forms as an intermediate reaction product. During subsequent reaction, CaS disappears and calcium aluminate forms; at the same time, aluminum and sulfur dissolve in the steel. Kinetic analysis shows that the rate of this reaction is not limited by mass transfer of dissolved aluminum and sulfur away from the reacting inclusions. The reaction rate is likely limited by transport of dissolved calcium. This example also illustrates the use of FactSage macros for kinetic modeling.

Underground coal mines beneath Black Mountain in the Harlan County district of the Central Appalachian coalfields have an extensive history of bump events, which yields an elevated probability for significant injury or fatality to underground miners. According to Mark (2009), Harlan County has had the greatest concentration of deep-cover retreat mining in the United States. Combined with the extensive multiple seam mining history, room-and-pillar coal bumps have had a disproportionate impact on coal operations in this region. The Harlan seam, one of the principal, economically recoverable coalbeds exploited beneath Black Mountain, has a significant burst history that extends into modern times. A numerical investigation using the LaModel software of 17 bumps that occurred at the same mine in the Harlan seam was conducted and used to create a calibration methodology which serves as the quantitative basis for current and future numerical efforts in an adjacent mine exploiting the same reserve. In addition to this numerical study, a qualitative assessment of the geologic factors that are believed to contribute to the bump potential was completed. Combined with stability prediction using the numerical basis, these geologic factors will be used for recognition of high bump potential areas with the goal of reducing the potential for future bumps, helping to ensure the highest level of safety and productivity for underground personnel.

A method for determining the disorientation between sub-grains that .share a common tilt or twist boundary from measurements on X-ray micrographs is described. The method may be applied to subgrains of almost any orientation having boundary angles in the range from about 1 min to 1 deg of arc. An adaption of the Berg-Barretl method has been made to allow calculation of small angles of about 1 min to 1 deg of arc: between adjacent subgrains from the relative displacement of their images on X-ray micrographs. schulz4 gave equations for determining subgrain disorientation where the axis of subgrain rotation and the reflecting crystal planes were parallel to the specimen surface. In our method, however, they need not be parallel and, indeed, may have va:rious orientations. His camera setup, involving a fine-focus X-ray tube for obtaining high resolution with continuous radiation, was different from the one used in the present investigation (a 1.2 x 1.2 mm effective source and characteristic radiation). The X-rays produced a slight magnification in the subgrain images in the Schulz method, but not in the present method. The commonly available type of X-ray tube used permitted relatively short exposure times with a fine-grained photographic plate, which could be magnified optically many times for the examination of small subgrains. The method is illustrated by results obtained on {110} tilt boundaries in a polygonized aluminum single crystal of 99.994 pct purity. The flat crystal was stretched 6 pct in tension and then heated at 500°C for a cumulative time of 5 hr. Earlier, cahn5 studied subgrains formed by polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum crystals. He observed kink bands to have well defined boundaries lying in (110) planes, at least in the early stages of deformation. Cahn found that the (110) tilt boundaries formed by polygonization were directly related to the lattice bending about the <211> axis which lay in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. DESCRIPTION OF THE CAMERA Our camera was similar in detail to Honey-combe&apos;s.6 Unfiltered copper radiation was used at 35 kv, and 20 ma. With the particular specimen used here to illustrate the method, a 1.2 by 1.2 mm effective source and a distance of 780 mm from target to specimen were employed, giving a convergence of 5 min of arc in the primary beam. The distance was 9.5 mm from the specimen to film. The upper 1/2- by 1-in. portion of the front surface of the specimen was irradiated with the film in parallel position. Since the specimen had been inhomogeneously deformed, many regions were in a position to reflect characteristic radiation at the Bragg Angle. "Cable bolts are used frequently as a secondary support system (with steel arch support) in difficult stress-strain conditions of deep coal mines. The load transfer mechanism of cable bolts depends on several factors, such as the strength, deformation and geometric properties of the bolts, resin and the surrounding rock mass so-called cable-resin-rock system (CRR system). The bonding length and bolt/borehole diameter ratio strongly influence the final bearing capacity of the CRR system.The study presents the behaviour of CRR system during a pull-out test which is usually used in the carboniferous rock mass in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. A series of 28 pull out tests were performed on 3-m-long cable bolts, with various combinations of borehole diameters and bonding lengths, to understand this behaviour. Boreholes were drilled into a solid rock mass consisting of fine-grained sandstone to guarantee similar conditions during the pull-out tests. Video inspection and measurement of borehole diameters were performed to determine their quality and real diameters. Three characteristics were observed from pull-out test results: ultimate pull-out load; displacement of the end of bolt and system stiffness. Numerical modelling by FEM (Finite Element Method) was used to determine the stiffness of the CRR system for variable bolt/borehole ratios and bonding lengths each under constant load. A linear elasto-plastic model and a mohr-coulomb model were used for cable and resin-rock respectively. The results of the experiment may contribute significantly to improving of the methodology of cable bolts installation as well as the design of used cable bolts."

Discussion of the Paper by C. E. Corson, which was presented at the London Meeting, July, 1906. (See Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 11, September, pp. 725 to 742.) ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is:- "Hot work, as such, has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat-treatment alone, i.e., by reheating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the unworked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." The Metallographist, vol. ii., p. 267 (under the head of "Changes of Structure Brought About by Work"). Of the two pieces of steel tested by Mr. Corson, one was worked and finished at a " cherry red " and &apos; the other reheated to a cherry red, and the assumption was made that, in both cases the temperature was about 715° C., although no pyrometric device was used to record it. The possibility of considerable difference in temperature alone is so great as to invalidate Mr. Corson&apos;s inferences. The apparent temperature, moreover, is so close to the critical point of the steel as to render any conclusion very hazardous. -It is not at all evident that the annealed piece was reheated past its critical point, in which case reheating would have had practically no effect. Nor is it evident that the piece forged and finished at a cherry red was not actually below the critical point, which, by definition, I have called cold worked. Mr. Corson&apos;s explanation that " Under proper reheating, on the other hand, the steel becomes a solid solution from which crystals of approximate homogeneity and uniform size may separate" will not be readily understood.

"Industrial wasteland is a typical element of the landscape of all the industrialised regions in Europe. There are many examples from Poland as well as from other European countries that post-industrial sites have been undergone natural colonisation and succession to establish in some cases ecosystems of greater biological diversity than the original ecosystems. The post-industry sites regardless of any reclamation carried out, undergo natural successional processes. The respective biological diversity (number of species, and number of plant assemblages) reflects the micro-variety of the specific habitat. This paper summarizes the results of investigations, which have been carried out since 1989 on coal mine water sedimentation pools in the Upper Silesia Industry Region. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the diversity of spontaneous plant communities recorded on post-industrial waste sites. In the course of the long time fieldwork, plant assemblages representing nine phytosociological groups have been identified."

A method of characterizing gold ores with respect to processing is proposed. The method includes microscopical examinations to obtain qualitative and quantitative data that relate to processing. The main thrust, however, involves laboratory heavy liquid separation tests, laboratory amalgamation tests, and laboratory cyanidation tests to determine the proportions of gold that can be recovered in a conventional processing operation. Two different Brazilian gold ores: a quartz vein gold ore, and gold in metasediments were tested.
