THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. A significant risk factor in assessing and modeling potential catastrophic slope movement in open-pit mines is the presence of argillic alteration in host rocks. High-resolution hyperspectral imagery operating in the visible to shortwave infrared can be a useful tool for identifying and mapping potentially dangerous argillic zones. We have conducted preliminary experiments with a new type of hyperspectral imager that employs an acousto-optic tunable filter, a variable retardation plate and a standard digital camera. The instrument we tested operates in the .5-1.0 micrometer range. A shortwave infrared instrument is planned, and mid-infrared instruments have been designed. An AOTF consists of an acoustic transducer that generates an acoustic wave that propagates through an attached crystalline substance. The wave sinusoidally modulates the refractive index of the crystal, selectively diffracting incident light according to its wavelength. The instrument also measures polarization signatures of reflecting surfaces as well as their spectral properties, opening up new areas of possible research. Images can be acquired and processed at 30 frames/second. The AOTF camera system offers numerous advantages to geologists. It can be used as an airborne imager or as a portable field device to image pit walls, outcrops, rock specimens or drill core. It can be adapted to image polished sections under a microscope, and it could be used in underground workings. Algorithms can produce processed images in real time (e.g., ratio images), and, because it is a camera system, aerial images can be orthorectified.

THE St. Joseph Lead Co. became interested in the Tri-State district in 1921 through acquisition of prospecting and development rights on approximately 20,000 acres of land extending northeastward from the Picher mining field, mostly in Kansas. Prospecting with churn drills was begun the same year and the first commercial ore body was found on the Jarrett tract at the then northern limit of the main Picher field. Operations at this mine began in 1923. Kansas Explorations, Inc., was organized in 1923 by the St. Joseph Lead Co. as a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry on its operations in the Tri-State District from an office at Joplin, Mo. As prospecting of the original acreage proved largely negative, attention was subsequently turned to other sections of the district. Numerous additional leases were acquired and prospected. The Company was successful in developing into operating properties the Jarrett, Isherwood, Robinson, Sullivan and Lotson tracts and, in more recent years, the Ritz, Snapp, Buckingham, Gibson and Jasper mines.

Le Ministère des Richesses naturelles du Québec has continued development work on the process/or direct reaction 0/sodium carbonate with lithium-bearing silicates(Canadian Patent No. 643,843). Recent process improvements have involved continuous pressure leaching, rather than batch leaching, and higher solution concentrations (over 55 g/l Li2CO3. These improvements have been demonstrated on a pilot scale operating on decrepitated spodumene from the Sullivan Mining Group's Quebec deposit. The new process is expected to be very competitive with the conventional sulphuric acid route. The improved flowsheet and main process steps will be described along with pilot-plant results.

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. A facility at the National Nuclear Research Centre, Pelindaba, for the calibration of gamma survey meters used in uranium-prospecting operations by P. D. TOENS, D.Sc. (Fellow), D. van ASt, M.Sc. (Visitor), and CONSTANCE M. VLEGGAAR, B.Se. (Visitor) Ground radiometric surveys in uranium prospecting have in the past suffered from two serious shortcomings. Owing to varying instrument sensitivity and the often arbitrary height at which readings are taken, it has been impossible to compare results obtained in different surveys and, moreover, to relate such readings to actual U30s concentrations. A set of calibration sources designed to overcome these problems has recently been constructed on the site of the National Nuclear Research Centre, Pelindaba. A discussion of the standards applied and the instrument calibration procedure is presented.

This final report documents the work done by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) , on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971) . Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of in- dependent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "seismic Detection and, Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume.

"The last 25 years have seen tremendous economic pressure placed upon the base metal processor. Industry has responded with technological innovations that have contributed to significant reductions in capital and operating costs. Major changes in processing machinery and philosophy are highlighted for the main unit operations of a base metal mill. Changes in our attitudes on what is environmentally acceptable are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONNewton's law of motion paraphrased states that nothing will change unless there is a pressure to do so.Aase metal processing as a primary commodity related industry has been under severe economic pressure over the last 25 years. This has been brought on by over capacity from new operations in the L.D.C. 's, through material substitution in a host of traditional base metal applications and generally reduced world-wide economic activity. In addition to shrinking markets our collective environmental consciousness has raised effluent standards and workplace hygiene and the employee's as well as government's economic expectations of how much ought to be derived from ''nature's riches''.Industry has responded with technological changes which, it was hoped, would counteract the cost squeeze in which it found itself.I would like to briefly enumerate the major changes, as I see them, that have taken place in the main unit operations that form the normal processing chain for base metals.While the following paper will mention several brands of products, I would like to emphasize that these are the ones that I am most familiar with and is not to say that they are the only manufacturers which have contributed to changes. "Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) I AM indebted to L. E. Bryant, of Danville, Ky., President of the Virginia Mining Co., operating coal-mines in Scott county, Tenn., for the following information relating to the existence of the Clinton iron-ore under the NW. slope of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee. During the past 15 years quite an important oil-field has been developed in a region having Wayne county, Ky., as its center, and a large number of wells have been drilled in that and adjacent territory in the search for oil. Many of' these wells have been carried to considerable depths below the recognized oil-bearing horizon, and one of them was drilled by Mr. Bryant at Pine Knot, a station on the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific railroad, a few miles north of the point where that road crosses the Kentucky-Tennessee State-line. The elevation of the surface at the crossing is about 1,400 ft. above sea-level. The railroad is located on the dividing ridge between the Cumberland river and Big South Fork. At a depth of 1,720 ft. below the surface the drill reached and passed through a formation which the drillers called " red rock," but which Mr. Bryant classified as Clinton iron-ore, as its geological position corresponded to that formation. The ore at this point was 6 ft. thick and appeared to be of uniform quality throughout. An analysis of the drillings gave : Fe, 33; Mn, 0.25; Si02? 3 ; Al203, 2 ; CaO, 13; MgO, 7 ; P,05, 0.333 per cent. ; S, trace. This analysis seems to confirm the belief that the ore is Clinton, and that it is of a quality equal to the average of the deep or unbleached Clinton ores in Tennessee and Alabama. This discovery led Mr. Bryant to make further examinations and inquiries, and he found that the stratum called " red rock " by the drillers had been passed through and noted in the great majority of the wells carried down to the same geological hori-

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

FLOTATION practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 13 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are clue to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the 8 years which the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened.

A study was made of the effect of ß grain size on the tensile ductility of a-ß titanium alloys haet treated to strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. It was concluded that the primary cause of $ embrittlement is the large grain size which is obtained so rapidly in many a-ß titanium alloys when heated into the ß field. It was also found that grain-boundary a and acicular intragranular a in the microstructure are not necessarily detrimental to the tensile ductility if the prior ß grain size is sufficientlv fine. BETA embrittlement occurs in a-ß alloys when the finish hot-working or stages of the subsequent heat treatment have been done at temperatures in the ß field. In order to avoid this embrittlement, for-gings must be finished at temperatures under the ß transus. For better workability, it would be desirable to forge at temperatures in the ß field. For this reason, research has been conducted to determine the cause of ß embrittlement. Although ß grain size has been considered as a possible contributing factor to ß embrittlement, only limited research has been done to evaluate its effect. The effect of addition elements on ß grain growth in unalloyed titanium has been studied by Liu.' Complete mechanical property data, however, were not obtained for correlation with grain size. Ogden and coworkers2 have investigated the effect of both a and ß grain size and grain shape in Ti-Cr-Mo alloys. Their data indicated that tensile ductility was relatively insensitive to ß grain size at annealed strength levels (140,000 psi ultimate). No study has apparently been made to determine the relationship between ß grain size and ß embrittlement in a-ß alloys heat treated to high strength (180,000 psi ultimate). The high-strength condition is that in which ß embrittlement is particularly severe. Beta grain size is not easily varied through the use of a range of annealing times and temperatures in the ß field, because of the rapidity with which ß grain growth occurs. Short-time heating techniques are needed to obtain the smallest ß grains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In this research, the experimental procedure was as follows: 1) Tensile and microimpact specimen blanks were resistance heated to produce a range of ß grain sizes. 2) The tensile and microimpact blanks were then solution-treated in the a-ß field and aged to produce predetermined ultimate tensile strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. Tensile and impact ductility were then correlated with a grain size for constant strength levels. Materials—The alloys Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-4A1-4Mn, and Ti-16V-2.5Al are representative of the heat-treatable a-ß types in which ß embrittlement can be severe. The compositions and ß transi of the heats studied are given in Table I. The Ti-16V-2.5Al heat was melted and fabricated to 1/4 in. round at Battelle; the other alloys were obtained as 1/4 in. round rolled from commercial heats. The micro-structures of the as-rolled alloys were fine a-ß mixtures. This structure is typical of titanium alloys hot-worked extensively in the a-ß field. Resistance-Heating Treatments to Establish ß Grain Size—For direit resistance heating, a 1/4-in.-diam s~ecimen was heated with a 3000-watt transformer rated for 1000 amp with adjustable secondary voltage. The apparatus included a spray quench fixture. Both heating and quenching periods could be automatically controlled. For temperature measurements, 28-gage Chromel-Alumel wires were tack-welded to the specimen at its midpoint. A high-speed recorder-controller was used to control the heating cycle.

THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are presented in some detail. Basic principles ,are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal fields, and methods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various methods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment. DEFINITION OF TERMS Definitions of terms are consistent with modern developments, and on form, in general, with their usage in mineral-dressing practice. Because of variations in coal-preparation methods, it is impossible to define a rigid upper limit of particle size for a coal slurry or sludge which will apply generally. Limits vary somewhat with the particular treatment method employed at a given plant. For purposes of definition, this limit is chosen as the particle size for which preparation methods such as Chance cones and jigs are usually dispensed with, and other methods, such as the Hydrotator, tables, and froth flotation, are employed. Generally the limit will be 10 to 6 mesh. In assuming this variable upper limit of particle size in a coal slurry, it is recognized that the size ranges discussed will duplicate sizes dealt with

Green rust is an important intermediate in oxidative transformation of Fe(II) phase. This unstable compound contains a mixture of ferrous and ferric hydroxides that belong to a family of minerals known as layered double hydroxides (LDH). Its general formula is [FeII(6-x) FeIIIx (OH)12]x+[Ax/n-*yH2O] x-, where A is an n-valent anion mainly Cl-, CO3-2 and SO4-2, and in which either the bivalent or the trivalent iron can be replaced for other trivalent or bivalent metal ions. It was first identified as corrosion product, later in soils as a product of interactions between microbes and metals in soils. Due to its high reactivity, it is used in the reduction of organic and inorganic compounds, As removal, and the treatment of acid mine drainage. In this paper, we described the method of electrochemical generation of green rust, its characterization by XRD, SEM and FT-IR, and its implications to electrocoagulation.

"It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. For such a circumstance, an expert system can become a very valuable tool to assist the operator in taking the most appropriate and timely action.A forward chaining expert system module has been developed for this application. The module is based on Level 5 ObjectTM software. It is graphics oriented and user-friendly. Training requirement is minimal.ForewordThis paper has arisen out of work carried out by YLS Associates and Falconbridge Limited as part of a contract between Falconbridge and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Government of Canada, on the application of expert systems in mining operations.IntroductionThe electrical bill charged to large consumers by Ontario Hydro is based upon two elements: demand and energy consumption. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

During the response to the Moura No 4 disaster, use was made of the New South Wales Mines Rescue Service’s ‘Mineshield’ inertisation equipment. The equipment had to be transported from Newcastle, approximately 1400 kms, and the liquid nitrogen a similar distance. The time taken, and therefore availability of the liquid nitrogen, became a significant problem. Operational issues were also experienced during use. Typically the liquid nitrogen is converted to a gas (vaporised) before being injected into the mine. However, as the propane gas tanker used for the vapourising unit was delayed, an attempt was made to inject the liquid nitrogen directly down uncased boreholes. This proved unsuccessful.Following the Moura No 4 disaster and the Moura No 2 disaster, recommendations were made relating to having inertisation capacity for the Queensland coal mining industry. Today the Queensland industry has multiple options available for inertisation, including the high-volume GAG and smaller volume units such as boilers and membrane separation units. Although it ultimately aided re-entry into Moura No 4, most likely due to the issues associated with supply to Central Queensland, liquid nitrogen has not found favour within the Queensland industry as an inertisation tool.Coregas has commissioned an air separation plant in Mackay, improving the availability of liquid nitrogen to Central Queensland. Based on the availability of this nitrogen, recent sealing operations at Kestrel have trialled using liquid nitrogen and associated vapourising units.
