"Al-Fe alloy sheets having layers with different strain components were produced by unlubricated hot rolling and the recrystallization texture formation during annealing was investigated in each layer. In this study, the strain component introduced by rolling was quantitatively evaluated by measuring degree of bending of an aluminum pin embedded in the sheet. The textures before and after annealing were investigated by the SEM-EBSD technique. It was clarified that, in the middle layer, where comparatively small shear strain was introduced, ß-fiber subgrains and cube {001}<100> oriented subgrains were formed before annealing, and cube oriented recrystallized grains grew after annealing. On the other hand, in the surface layer, where large additional shear strain was introduced, shear texture components and cube oriented subgrains were formed before annealing, and shear texture was retained even after annealing, while cube oriented subgrains did not grow and were encroached. It was suggested that introduced strain components influenced the recrystallization texture formation by inducing different distribution of the subgrain size, stored strain energy and orientation relationship with surroundings before annealing.INTRODUCTION The microstructure developed during the hot-rolling process of aluminum and aluminum alloys affect the mechanical properties of the final product sheets. Especially, the crystallographic orientation in the final product sheets affects the r- value and ears during deep drawing (Humphreys & Hatherly, 2004), then the texture control in the hot-rolling process is important. When the friction between the rolling roll and rolled sheet in the hot-rolling is large, both the rolling texture and recrystallization texture tend to be heterogeneous in the thickness direction. It is known in many rolled aluminum alloy sheets that the texture in the surface layer was different from that in the middle layer because of additional shear strain. It was reported that in the vicinity of the surface layer, where large additional shear strain was introduced, the shear texture <1 1 1>//ND and < 1 1 0> // RD which contain components of {1 1 1} <1 1 0> and {0 0 1} <1 1 0> developed during rolling, and the shear texture developed even after recrystallization annealing (Sakai et al., 2002). Particularly, it is thought that the <1 1 1> // ND texture contributes to improve the r-value and press formability (Inoue & Takasugi, 2007). Therefore, asymmetrical rolling and high friction rolling have been applied to improve formability of aluminum alloys by adding shear strain in the rolled sheets as deep as possible (Kamijo et al., 1972; Inoue et al., 2005). However, few researches have been focused on the microstructures and texture before annealing and thus, the detailed mechanism is still unclear how the texture after annealing is affected by the texture before annealing. In this study, the Al-Fe alloy of commercially pure aluminum was chosen as the first material to be studied in order to clarify the fundamental process of the recrystallization texture formation. The main purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of additional shear strain on the rolling and recrystallization textures in the hot-rolled sheets by analyzing the transition of microstructure and orientation distribution through recrystallization annealing."

Introduction If a subject this broad were to be covered in even moderate detail, it would require a set of books about the size of an encyclopedia. Since an acceptable length for this paper is a small fraction of one book, it will have to consist of a few samples of the subjects that I think are the most pertinent to World Fossil Fuel Economics. I plan to discuss the trends in world energy demand, particularly in the U. S. and Europe; the consumption patterns and cost patterns of oil, gas and coal; the prospects of synthetics; and some of the effects of government regulation of fuel economics. World Energy Demands Fig. 1 shows Free World energy consumption by principal areas for the period from 1950 to 1970 and a forecast for the period from 1970 to 1985. These figures include only the measurable forms of energy. An example of energy consumption that is not measured is the wood a peasant might cut in the forest and bum in a fireplace to heat his home. This omission probably is a very small part of the total. This forecast is not identical with that of Wayne E. Glenn (see Page 22), but the differences in total energy consumption are not significant. The U. S. consumption, which was 55 percent of the world total in 1950, had declined to 45 percent by 1970, and is expected to decline further to 38 percent by 1985. Western Europe has consumed 28 percent of the total from 1950 to 1970 and is expected to lose share slightly between 1970 and 1985. The most spectacular gainer is Japan, which increased consumption from 2.5 percent in 1950 to 7.5 percent in 1970, and is expected to reach nearly 17 percent by 1985. The over-all Free World total has grown from 62 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to 29 million B/D of crude oil) in 1950 to 151 quadrillion by 1970, an average growth rate of 4.5 percent/year. This total is expected to grow at a rate of 5 percent/year between now and 1985, reaching 315 quadrillion Btu (equivalent to nearly 150 million B/D). Fig. 2 shows which fuels supplied this energy between 1950 and 1970, and gives an estimate of how it will be supplied between 1970 and 1985.

It is not the purpose of this paper to enter into the minutiae of a subject so vast, upon which volumes have already been written and volumes more might still be written, but simply to pass in review the characteristic features of that practice, which, dating from the blowing-in of the Edgar Thomson "A" furnace in 1879 and continuing down to the present day, has given to American blast-furnace operations a new significance. The blowing-in of " A" furnace marked the beginning of a new era in the science of iron-smelting if, indeed, it was not the very birth of science as applied to this industry in the United States. American blast-furnace practice in its generic sense and world-wide significance dates from that day, and really all that is valuable, all that is remarkable or worthy of discussion, is embraced in the experiences and achievements of the past fifteen years. Back of that we find only the dead level of mediocrity, or worse, a dispoition to " let well enough alone;" a general, almost universal, employment of " rule of thumb " methods. The application of scientific principles and methods was rare and, indeed, previous to the introduction of the Bessemer process in the early seventies, science had no place in controlling the operations of the American blast-furnace. The old practice consisted mainly in dumping raw materials in at the top of the furnace and tapping out iron and slag at the bottom, for the successful consummation of which the furnace-manager directed his best energies toward keeping the furnace as free as possible from "gobbing" with, alas ! but indifferent success. The burdening of the furnace was based largely on Mark Twain&apos;s receipt for " Johnny-cake," altered to suit the circumstances, viz.: a lot of ore, a lot of fuel and about a quarter of a lot of flux. The possible capacities of furnace-plants were not nearly realized. Enormous wastes were permitted, unheeded because not understood. In the use of fuel quantum suff. was always the rule. A laboratory-scale investigation of the effect of milling operation and catalyst addition ( K2CO3) on the partial reduction of low-grade pyrolusite ore pellets was carried out using coke as a reductant. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to understand the correlation between milling and catalyst addition parameters with the reduction temperatures. DTG analysis of pyrolusite pellet reduction showed three distinctive peaks associated with a three-step reduction mechanism (i.e., MnO2→ Mn2O3→Mn3O4→MnO). The results showed that the grinding and addition of the catalyst have a significant effect on lowering the MnO2 reduction temperature independently. But maximum reduction temperature drop is obtained when combining grinding and catalyst addition in this work. By 3 h milling and 10 wt% catalyst addition, the reduction temperatures were reduced by more than 200 °C compared to the raw ore pellets. These results obtained from the DTG analysis were further supported by XRD analysis of the reduced samples.

O objetivo desse trabalho é comparar três técnicas em soldagem MIG/MAG com baixa energia: Curto Circuito convencional, Curto Circuito Controlado (CCC) Soft e modo corrente Pulsada através de soldagens na posição vertical descendente e avaliando a geometria do cordão de solda, o acabamento superficial e os sinais de aquisição. Essas três técnicas tem como vantagem a soldagem em todas as posições e o uso de baixas energias, que otimizam seu uso em chapas muito finas e em de passes de raiz. Foram definidos alguns parâmetros constantes como velocidade de alimentação e velocidade de soldagem e a corrente média foi mantida aproximadamente igual. Os parâmetros trabalhados foram a Distância Bico de Contato a Peça (DBCP) e o ângulo de soldagem e foi utilizado o modelo experimental Fatorial Completo, resultando em 27 ensaios. A soldagem com CCC Soft manteve a qualidade em quase todas as soldagens enquanto o C.C convencional e a corrente pulsada tiveram resultados satisfatórios apenas em algumas condições. Os resultados apresentaram que as soldagens com CCC Soft mantiveram a a geometria e a energia aproximadamente iguais mesmo com a variação da DBCP e do ângulo, o que não aconteceu com as outras duas técnicas, e a corrente pulsada apresentou bons resultados apenas na posição 15 graus puxando.

Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

The Darrehzar porphyry Cu deposit is situated in the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic suite of Central Iran. The REE and trace element data suggest that the deposit lies within a continental margin setting. Phyllic and propylitic alteration are pervasive in the area but potassic and argillicalteration are not readily recognized on the surface. This is possibly the result of super gene weathering of the surface rocks or because of an intense phyllic overprint. Poor soil development and abundant outcrop make the area suitable for a case study of lithogeochemical exploration technique for Cu deposits. A total of 262 rock samples was collected over the area and analyzed for 15 elements. The geochemical data cor-relate with the mineralogical composition of the rocks with the phyllic zone being marked by high-er concentrations of Si, Al, K, and by a high sericitization index while Ca, Mg, Sr, total Fe and Mn are more abundant in the propylitic zone. The lithogeochemical study indicates a metal zonation from a Cu + Mo-rich core to a Zn + Pb ± Ag-rich outer zone. Principal component analysis is useful for separating element associations, which in turn reflect the alteration halos. Principal components 1 and 2 depict alteration zoning, where-as 3 shows an association of Cu and Mo, that roughly defines the mineralized area.

Although the recovery of nitric and hydrofluoric acids from stainless steel pickle liquors has been solved by several methods, such as solvent extraction, acid retardation, evaporation or pyrohydrolysis, metals (mainly iron, chromium and nickel) are usually obtained as a waste or by-product that has to be disposed. Alternatively, the treatment requires a high liquor flow to be economical, as is the case for pyrohydrolysis. A new process has been developed for metals recovery, that produces metal oxides with a low fluoride content. This new technique is based on a selective precipitation mechanism, which produces nickel hydroxide with a purity of 90%, separate from a mixture of iron and chromium oxides and hydroxides suitable for recycling. The reaction mechanism is based on the precipitation of fluoride compounds of iron and chromium, K2FeF5 and CrF3. For this purpose, free fluoride must be added as potassium fluoride. Also, solid fluoride compounds are hydrolysed, releasing free fluoride. A part of the fluoride is recycled to the selective precipitation operation and the remainder is fed to the acid recovery stage. Nickel does not react in this operation; it remains in solution giving a high separation yield.

RECENT jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out of the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely different ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. C. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Columbia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, Y8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to serve for suspension. A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs. 2 and 3. DEFINITIONS The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a shorlrange product is one closely sized. A large research and development program called RYM PRE (Process Re-Engineering) has been active in Finland since 2010. As a part of the program, a work packet Infra FINBIM is focused on the development of new national process model, specifications and requirements for the whole Finnish Infra Industry. In the Infra FINBIM, total 15 companies and main owners and 3 research organisations are included. The work is further continuing. The main achieved results up today have been the first specifications and requirements of the BIM based total process for infra sector, about 30 different pilot projects for testing of the new design and construction process models producing a lot of results and observations, a new open information transfer format Inframodel3 based on LandXML standard, the achieved acceptance of the Building SMART organization for support of international development, utilization and extension of the format within the whole infra industry, processes, software and other technical equipment. An evaluation of the results and this work will be drawn.

INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. IN recent print, some remarkably contradictory statements have appeared regarding the importance to be attached to sponge iron,1-6 a metallurgical commodity whose history goes back at least to the time of Diodorus Siculus in the fourth century B.C. This disagreement, however, expresses the lack of a satisfactory method for producing sponge iron rather than defection in the commodity. The blast furnace is admitted to have certain inherent disadvantages, such as a general unsuitability for magnetite and the heating and blowing of vast quantities of undesirable nitrogen, so that a workable sponge-iron process remains attractive. In this respect, low-temperature gaseous reduction shows especial promise; but confusion persists regarding the factors involved. The present paper, therefore, has three principal divisions: (I) an exhaustive examination of all previous work on low-temperature gaseous reduction, (2) experimentation on the reduction of a magnetite with hydrogen, and (3) development of certain thermodynamic relationships in reduction, with a summarized depiction of the factors in the general process. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Gaseous media used in the reduction processes under discussion can be classified in three types: (I) H2, (2) CO, and (3) other gases. In the second, the CO is often admixed with H2. The third principally comprises hydrogeniferous gases, such as natural gas and producer gas, and in addition includes chlorine. Because hydrogen therefore features in all three, a study of hydrogen reduction based on investigations using pure hydrogen alone may be incomplete. The present paper reviews the three groups of investigations in the listed order, paying particular attention to hydrogen reduction. For the benefit of future workers, an exhaustive bibliography has been prepared and similarly classified. GROUP I: REDUCTION WITH HYDROGEN Equilibria Although the present problem is specifically one of kinetics, a first consideration is the equilibrium of the system, since the reactions to be studied comprise that equilibrium, and their direction and end points are defined by it. The historic development of these researches is interesting and informative.

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

"The purpose of this paper is to report in a general way on the use of the Portaspec X Ray Spectrograph.At Manitou Barvue, we are milling two types of ores, copper and zinc. The control assay practice was to take grab samples at 4 hour intervals. These samples were dried in the mill, then taken over to the Assay Office where two operators would process them. Three hours later results were available at almost the same time as the operator was ready to take his set of grabs again, leaving no time for adjustments, if any were needed.After a reduction of personnel, there were no assays available on night shift. This practice was slow and inadequate, and a new way of doing control assays was investigated.After investigation the Portaspec was found suitable for the type of operation that we had in mind. The Portaspec is a conventional dispersive type of X Ray spectrograph. The instrument consists of three parts:The Power Supply The Spectrographic Head The Digital ScalerIn our case, where dried powder samples are analyzed, the instrument was provided with a two sample holder using one for the standard and the other for the sample. The operation of the instrment does not require any degree of skill or knowledge of chemistry or spectrography.Previous to buying the instrument, six sets of six to ten samples were sent to the supplier along with the assay for each sample. These samples were Cu. HDS., Cu. Conc., Cu. tls, - Zn. HDS., Zn. Conc., Zn. tls. A definite pattern was observed. For example - six Cu. HDS. samples ranging from .40 to .90 gave 10400 counts for the lowest to 16.040 counts for the highest. The number of counts were then plotted to give percentages."

This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. Results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates are discussed. CRUSHED stone classified as limestone comprises about 70 pct of the crushed concrete aggregate and roadstone produced in this country, and the product has amounted in the recent past to about 97 million tons per year, valued at more than $123,-000,000.&apos; Therefore an evaluation of the properties of rocks classified in these statistics as limestones and an ability to predict their behavior as aggregate in portland cement concrete are matters of considerable economic consequence to producers and consumers of aggregate. This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. It also points out certain results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates. The problems encountered in efforts to explain the behavior of limestones, dolomites, and related rocks as concrete aggregate lie on the frontiers between the ignorance of the geologists and the ignorance of the engineers. The mineral composition and textures of the rocks have not been adequately explored and described, and the effects of mineral composition and texture on the performance of aggregates have been worked out in only a few cases. There are instances of unsatisfactory performance and some generalizations of those experiences. There are many more examples of satisfactory performance than of unsatisfactory, but there is practically no published information as to why a particular aggregate was satisfactory in a specific use. There are all too few investigations of undeteriorated concrete; more is known about the pathology of concrete than about its normal structure and aspect. As part of the investigation of aggregates, the classification of rocks is not an end in itself, but is a step toward recognition of properties expected to influence the behavior of aggregates in their intended use. Rock of any type may perform well or poorly as concrete aggregate, depending on the physical condition of the rock, its physical and chemical properties as compared to those of the matrix in which it is placed, and the circumstances under which the concrete is exposed. Some classification and descrip- tion of the limestones is necessary to distinguish subgroups whose members will probably behave in similar ways and to evaluate the group as a whole. The group name, limestone, includes and tends to conceal the identity of rocks that have a very great range in chemical and mineralogical composition, structure and texture, conditions of deposition, subsequent history, and suitability for use as concrete aggregate. All the rocks classified as limestones include one or both of the most abundant rock-form-ing carbonate minerals, calcite and dolomite, as major constituents. Carbonate rocks is a more descriptive and more accurate group name than limestone, which has generally been used to include dol-omitic or magnesian limestones and dolomites as well as calcitic limestones. Classification and Description of the Carbonate Rocks The question of names to be applied to the carbonate rocks may appear academic, but it is of practical importance as long as there are specifications for aggregate that result in acceptance or rejection of rocks by name and as long as failure to make distinctions among the carbonate rocks leads to misunderstandings of their properties and of what may be expected of them in performance. Materials included in production statistics as limestone and tested for concrete aggregate as limestone range in fact from calcareous shale and calcareous or dolomitic sandstone and argillaceous limestone and dolomite to calcitic limestone and pure dolomite and to rocks close to calcitic and dolomitic marble. To take a simple example: consider two manufactured coarse aggregates, both dense and unweathered, one composed principally of crystalline calcite and the other of crystalline dolomite, but both known as limestone. If each is used as coarse aggregate in a standardized concrete mixture with the same fine aggregate used in both cases, made into concrete specimens, and tested in accelerated freezing-and-thaw-ing, the test results will probably be quite different, because of the differences in internal bond and thermal properties between the two aggregates. As long as both aggregates are called limestone, the test results cannot be explained, or used except in a very limited way; if the aggregates are distinguished as limestone and dolomite and the consequent differences in texture and thermal properties are recognized, the results are reasonable. T. E. PURCELL, general chairman . of the local committee, opened the seventh meeting of the Fuels Division A.S.M.E. and the Coal Division A.I.M.E., at the William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, Oct. 28-29, by introducing Harry M. Moses, president, H. C. Frick Coke Co., who welcomed the 500 registrants to "our town." Mr. Moses, in his brief talk, declared that in the postwar period each of the new centers must have a reason for existence. Pittsburgh, he said, has no iron ore, or bauxite, and limestone is scattered and not near by; but Pittsburgh does have low-cost fuel within reasonable distance. Its problem is the economical utilization of the low-cost fuels that remain, as the high-quality fuels are gone. Mr. Moses expressed confidence in this group in the solution of the problem and looked forward to what they would do. Harold V. Permissible blasting units are approved with the understanding that if actively marketed they will be listed as permissible so that all interested in such safety equipment may know what is available. The last detailed lint of permissible units was published as Technical Paper 4294/. All of the blasting units of that list have become obsolete or have boon modified as covered by extensions of the original approvals.

Air Pollution Control (APC) ashes from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) plants need to be treated prior to landfilling due mainly to their heavy metals content. This research evaluates the capacity of the APC residues to sequester carbon dioxide, while the ash becomes stabilized for storage. It has the benefit of using two wastes, with no addition of any raw material. APC samples from different MSWI plants were treated by gas/solid accelerated carbonation at different temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations to evaluate the residue behaviour to the process. The extent of carbonation was evaluated by means of weight gain upon carbonation and by the measurement of the final carbonate content. The APC residues were analyzed before and after the treatment in order to know their composition and their leaching behaviour according to the criteria for the acceptance of wastes at landfills established by the European Council Decision 2003/33/EC.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how site-specific slope stability analysis can be performed entirely from the desktop with satellite images, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and slope stability software packages. This type of analysis would effectively eliminate or restrict the need for expensive field testing of geotechnical properties of a hillside, pit wall, berm, or embankment, and would be particularly useful for slope failure mitigation at remote or otherwise inaccessible locations.
