All of Canada's older uranium mining areas have been intensively prospected and known outcrops have been repeatedly examined. The only ground in these areas which has not been explored is that which is covered by water or other overburden. The discovery of new mines in these areas will, in the author's opinion, depend on the development of new geophysical or geochemical tools capable of locating uranium deposits which are-buried beneath tens to hundred of feet of overburden. Such tools would be extremely useful in Saskatchewan's Cluff Lake and Wollaston Lake areas. Uranium has recently been discovered in significant quantities in these regions but exploration is made extremely difficult and expensive by an almost uniform overburden cover. The author's experience has been confined to Canada but apparently a subsurface uranium prospecting method could be widely exployed in the western United States and Australia as well. Radon-222 measurements have been used for more than a decade on practically a worldwide basis in an attempt to obtain a useful method for subsurface uranium prospecting. It is well known that ha-222 produced by buried uranium deposits can diffuse through an overburden cover so that it can sometimes be detected at surface. An advantage of this method of prospecting is that Rn-222 can be detected with a simple scintillation, ionization or semiconductor detector. One of the essential weaknesses of the method is that the mean diffusion path length of Rn-222 is limited by its very short (3.8 days) half life. For a deeply buried deposit, vitually all of the Rn-222 atoms will decay before reaching surface and, therefore, such deposits cannot be expected to produce a detectable radon anomaly. Thus, except in unusual cases where groundwater or ground air flow assists the movement of radon towards surface, the depth of exploration is probably limited to ten or twenty feet of overburden cover. The high solubility of Rn-222 in water is also a source of difficulty. In an area where overburden covers bedrock with water saturation of the lower overburden levels, the radon will simply dissolve in the groundwater, and soil gas readings at surface will indicate falsely low

"Mining has been going on commercially in Zambia for over 100 years. The backbone of the mining industry has been copper production and its by-products of cobalt and gold. Over these years, the mining industry ownership structure has swung from private ownership to state ownership in 1972, and back to private ownership in 1995. Environmental management was first introduced into the body of Zambian legislation in 1991 through the promulgation of the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act (EPPCA). The Act’s main functions included the protection of the environment and control of pollution, and in particular to provide for the health and welfare of the people, animals, plants and the environment in general. This Act, was replaced in 2011 by the Environmental Management Act (EMA). The new Act has a number of new elements including: mainstreaming environment in national planning, it provides for the domestication of multilateral environmental agreements, enhances public participation issue, creates a central environmental information depositary, elaborates access to information principles, establishes an environment fund, creates enforcement orders, provides for both Zambia Environmental Management Authority and members of the public to sue for damages following environmental pollution, and provides for the appointment of honorary Inspectors. In addition to this, the Mines and Minerals Act of 1995 provided, for the first time, a section on environmental management in the mining sector. This section also created the Environmental Protection Fund (for mining), and made it obligatory to undertake environmental impact assessment before mining permits could be issued. The Environmental Protection Fund has now been established, as provided for by the law, and currently has more than USD9.0 million in the account. Secondly, environmental auditing is now being carried out annually on mines around the country, the effect of this has been a significant improvement in the environmental management of mining in Zambia. This paper looks at the response of the Zambian mining sector to these pieces of environmental management legislation, and the direction that the mining sector is expected to take on environmental management going forward."

The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

Carbonaceous gold-bearing ores of the type that occur in north-central and northeastern Nevada were investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of its Heavy Metals Program. Specific objectives were to identify the carbon and organic compounds that prevent adequate gold recovery from the ore by cyanidation and to develop an economical process that would overcome the detrimental effect of the carbonaceous constituents. Activated carbon and long-chain organic compounds containing sulfur and nitrogen were found in the ore. Part of the material consisted of stable gold organic complexes. A mild oxidation technique that allowed gold extraction as high as 96 percent by subsequent cyanidation was developed. A variety of oxidants was shown to be effective in improving gold recovery, including chlorine and sodium hypochlorite (NaOC1). An electrolytic oxidation process was developed that was particularly advantageous from an economic and effectiveness standpoint.

This report summarizes the results of a hydrologic research study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in cooperation with Energy West Mining Co. at the Deer Creek and Cottonwood Mines, near Orangeville, UT. The USBM evaluated hydrologic and overburden failure data to assess the response of local ground water to underground coal mining in single-and multiple-seam conditions. Fourteen springs located over the two mines were investigated in the study along with overburden failure response caused by longwall panel extraction. Spring discharge was compared to climatic variation and time of undermining to quantify response to undermining. Spring discharge had been reduced owing to below-normal precipitation during the period evaluated. The response of springs to mining in the vicinity was influenced in part by the thick overburden present at the study site the presence of hydrophilic clays and mudstones in the overburden stratigraphy, and elevation of the springs above mine level, which buffered the effects of undermining.

Optimizing the long-term efficiency of passive systems for the treatment of highly contaminated acid mine drainage (AMD) is still a challenging issue. The optimization lies, among others, on improving the understanding and quantification of metal removal mechanisms in order to predict and enhance the stability of neo-formed minerals in secondary phases. Sorption, and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides, carbonates and bio-sulfides are likely the most important metal removal mechanisms involved in passive biotreatment of both slightly and highly contaminated AMD. In the same time, the preferred mechanism is precipitation of metal sulfides that are more stable and less pH dependent than carbonates and oxides-hydroxides. However, results of relatively recent research studies performed at laboratory scale showed that sulfides accounted only for up to 15% of total metals removed in passive bioreactors treating highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (around 500 mg/L). Several approaches were used in the aforementioned studies to understand and quantify metal removal mechanisms in spent reactive mixtures collected from long-term (12-15 months) operating column bioreactors. These included: thermodynamic equilibrium modeling and various chemical extractions and mineralogical analyses (such as single and sequential extractions, acid volatile sulfides-simultaneously extracted metals determination, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis). The large proportion of metals (85%) removed by sorption and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides and carbonates suggests a relatively high mobility of the neoformed minerals, especially in low pH conditions. However, no data is available on the long-term stability of spent reactive mixtures and, on the implications for the sustainable management of this type of solid waste. Lately there is almost a consensus that the efficiency of highly contaminated AMD treatment is warranted by the use of multi-step passive systems, including both chemical and biological units, installed sequentially. However, very few well-documented studies are available on the design, construction, operation and long-term efficiency of these multi-step systems. A leading example is the tri-unit passive system installed on the abandoned Lorraine mine site (Québec) to treat a highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (about 2,500 mg/L). This tri-step system (160 m3), consisting in two bioreactors separated by a unit filled with wood ashes, achieves to date a satisfactory removal of iron (up to 99%). Moreover, based on the data collected during laboratory testing, iron was mainly removed in the wood ashes unit (from around 3,200 mg/L to 10 mg/L) by precipitation of oxides-hydroxides as predominant mechanism and only partially by sorption. However, no data is available on the actual metal removal mechanisms in the field. Overall, theses multi-step systems are more complex and their long-term performance is even less predictable than the single unit systems. This paper presents the current knowledge and the research needs on metal removal mechanisms in passive bioreactors and multi-step systems for the long-term treatment of highly contaminated AMD. A technique for fabricating free-standing, high-aspect-ratio porous and pillar-type Ni structures has been developed using wet Si processing. A wafer of (100) Si was initially etched in HF solution to form deep pores with micron-sized diameter. The aspect ratio can exceed 200. By introducing the as-etched Si into a defined aqueous Ni2+ solution, Ni deposits grew rapidly onto the sidewalls and replaced the Si. Long-time immersion allows the Si sidewalls to be completely converted and thus form a metallic Ni structure with high-aspect-ratio pores. It is known that close-packed submicron Si pillars can be formed by oxidizing and subsequent etching of the macropore sidewalls. Treated in the same Ni solution, high-aspect-ratio Ni pillars were correspondingly emerged by replicating the original pillar-type Si structure.

Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

"Hecla Limited has been investigating the potential benefits of using a Spendrup/Compact Filter Technic (CFT) diesel filtration system to remove diesel particulate matter (DPM) from the mine atmosphere to optimize use of the available air. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the scrubber efficiency for dust and DPM which is to be presented in another report. This paper reports on a new mining application of a carbon particulate sensor’s ability to continuously monitor long-term mine DPM levels in conjunction with the scrubber evaluation. Magee Scientific is the manufacturer of the Aethalometer®, a continuous black carbon monitor which has been used extensively in worldwide ambient air quality monitoring networks. Two Aethalometers were used at the mine to assess their potential to continuously track underground DPM levels. In this first underground mine application, the Aethalometers were used to continually monitor black carbon (BC) in the intake and exhaust of the CFT scrubber system. Results showed that an off-the-shelf Model AE33 Aethalometer could continually track underground BC levels for extended periods of time over the course of the six-week trial. Data at the scrubber intake over 14 days of testing showed that DPM filtration would be required less than half of the time to maintain BC levels below 50 µg/m3. If the Aethalometer BC data output were “smart coupled” to control a 200-HP in-mine scrubber, significant electrical cost savings would be realized. INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation airflow quantities are calculated to maintain a safe and healthy environment for miners. Dilution of diesel particulate matter (DPM) is often a key factor used to determine the required quantities of ventilation air (Bugarski et al. 2011). DPM emissions and exposure levels are highly variable depending on mine schedules and activities (Janisko & Noll 2010); however, lacking technology to continuously monitor levels, mine ventilation systems are often over-designed in order to handle worst-case scenarios to ensure that DPM levels are maintained at or below regulatory limits. As mines go deeper it becomes more difficult to supply air, and the development of new shafts for air is not economically feasible (Basu et al. 2008). Cleaning and reuse of available air then becomes an attractive option to maintain good air quality."

Waste water reuse from municipal and industrial effluents is becoming increasingly important in many areas around the world. Water scarcity, local regulation and environmental impact are driving many industries like coal and copper mines to reuse the large volume of waste water they produce. For example, the Chinese coal industry generated about 4.2 billion tons of mine waste water in 2005 of which only approximately 30 per cent was reused. Coal energy represents 76.6 per cent of the total energy generated in China in 2007 and most of the coal-fired power plants are located in north-west of China, which is a water stressed area.The selection of mine waste water treatment process is challenging as the effluents typically contains high levels of organic compounds and salinity and their composition can vary significantly. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies for mine waste water treatment and reuse.In this paper, an overview of the design and performance of ultrafiltration and RO membranes applied for reuse of mine waste water are discussed. A study was carried out in two effluents treatment plants treating copper and coal mine waste water, which are located in Chile and China respectively. The following topics will be discussed to demonstrate the performance of an integrated membrane system in mine waste water reuse: The main challenges from copper mine waste water treatment: high level of chemical oxygen demand (COD); high level of total suspended solids (TSS); high salinity; high concentration of silica, sulfate, iron and other contaminants; and fluctuation of raw water quality. The main challenges from coal mine waste water treatment: high level of total dissolved solids, and waste water quality fluctuation. Design parameters for waste water treatment systems: Selection of pretreatment for dual-membrane system in the copper mine: Clarifier with coagulation and flocculation to remove high TSS; Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to remove non-settling solids; Media filtration to handle fine solids and particulate organics; Activated Carbon filters (ACF) to remove dissolved organics, colour and odours. Selection of UF and RO membranes and specific design of their recovery, flux, chemical dosage and cleaning regimes. Finally, the performance of UF and RO, including the main fouling factors and efficient cleaning procedures, will be presented and compared to the design parameters to demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the selected integrated membrane systems in each case.

Estudos têm comprovado a afinidade e a eficiência do fosfato de cálcio bifásico (BCP) em aplicações médicas e odontológicas, assim como elemento adsorvente para o gás CO2, devido a sua característica de material poroso. O BCP é composto pela combinação entre hidroxiapatita (HA) e beta fosfato tricálcico (?-TCP), na proporção usual de 2/3 de HA e 1/3 de ?-TCP. Trata-se da mistura entre as fases solúvel, ?-TCP, e estável, HA, das biocerâmicas. O BCP é obtido por meio de tratamento térmico (para cristalização) do ACP (fosfato de cálcio amorfo), na mufla, em temperaturas variando de 600 a 1300ºC, por cerca de 24 horas – calcinação. A caracterização e a comparação de amostras amorfas e amostras calcinadas, baseia-se na utilização de aparelhos DRX, MEV, FRX, difração de laser (Cilas) e análise de área superficial (BET). A seguir, na etapa de granulometria, BCP e ACP são peneirados em duas faixas de grãos: menores que 38µm e entre 53µm-38µm. As análises por microscopia eletrônica evidenciam que o ACP possui estrutura semelhante à hidroxiapatita (HA), mas como os seus cristais são muito pequenos, essa fase aparece como amorfa. As análises por DRX indicaram a ausência de impureza cristalina distinguível nas partículas de BCP e a presença de um pico característico de ?-TCP. Sabe-se que a produção de BCP demanda maior gasto energético em relação ao ACP, devido ao tratamento térmico (calcinação).

Cerâmicas porosas foram produzidas com nanopartículas de ferrita de manganês através da técnica de freeze casting, sendo possível obter poros direcionados. Foram produzidas duas amostras dessas cerâmicas tendo como ligante-dispersante o PEG-4000 e PEG-8000, ambos em 8%p. Por MEV foi possível observar as estruturas porosas das cerâmicas. O método de Arquimedes foi utilizado para obter as medidas de porosidade e densidade aparentes e de densificação. A ferrita pura e as amostras sinterizadas foram caracterizadas por DRX e foi identificada apenas a presença da fase ferrita, para as amostras antes da sinterização e transformação de fase da ferrita para óxidos de Mn e Fe após tratamento térmico. Tais resultados possibilitam indicar a aplicação dessas cerâmicas como elementos filtrantes.

This report covers the study of the feasibility of using a hand-held infrared viewer as a methane indicator to observe methane gas at the face of an underground coal mine. The objective of this program was the development of a hand-held device to remotely detect the presence of concentrations of methane gas in underground coal mines. Convenient "mapping" of methane from a remote location would allow rapid and safe corrective procedures for working personnel. Modified commercially available equipment was evaluated both in the laboratory and in a working mine. Although readings were obtained and the general principle of operation demonstrated, the power levels necessary, and protective enclosures required, would raise the weight of the instrument beyond practical limits of portability. Based on currently available technology, it is the conclusion of the investigations that a practical, portable, hand-held visual methane indicator is beyond the state-of-the-art. The recommendation was, therefore, made that work be suspended, and the results and data compiled and presented in a final program report.

The management of the Anglo Platinum (AP) mining technical systems (MTS) embarked upon a process of defining the strategy for the MTS department. The newly established department forms part of the greater Group Information Technology (IT). The strategic process took place within an environment that had witnessed a dramatic proliferation of IT implementations across the group within the last three years. The IT department has been structured in terms of the classical plan, build and run functions with the applications and integration streams running perpendicular across these three functions. The application stream is divided into commercial and mining technical systems with business systems integration the third stream. The mining technical systems department supports mine management to effectively gather, analyse and disseminate data relating to the ore reserve by integrating a number of strategically selected IT applications to ensure that the safety, legal and operational requirements are met. This service to business is rendered by management of a strategic outsource partner via tightly controlled service level agreements (SLAs). The framework used for creating a mining technical systems department that is empowered to add value to business was formulated using the AP value chain as both the starting point and guiding process to ensure alignment to the greater internal strategy of the business. Seismic monitoring systems for mining operations are being utilized more than ever before in the characterization of rock mass response to underground and open pit mining. This paper provides a review of the use of microseismic monitoring for rock mechanics applications at mines throughout the world. Some practical considerations for the installation of these systems are presented along with techniques for optimizing seismic array coverage. Case studies and installation examples are also provided. Recent applications of advanced seismic analysis techniques are discussed including the determination of event mechanisms, mapping of maximum peak particle velocity (PPV) and seismic hazard fields, and the use of source parameter data for large event re-entry protocol.

SEVERAL methods are available for determining pole figures by X-ray means.' The earlier film methods have been replaced by techniques in which the intensities are measured by Geiger counters on an X-ray diffractometerZm7. These methods utilize either flat transmission or reflection samples,214°8 cylindrical specimens,3 or spherical specimens.7 A single transmission or reflection sample will not yield information over the complete pole figure. The cylindrical specimens suggested by Nortod and the spherical specimen of Jetter and Borie7 have the advantage of allowing the whole pole figure to be obtained without any corrections to the intensity for absorption, There is a lower limit to the size of sheet which can be conveniently studied, however, and sample preparation can be rather tedious. Probably the most common method today for determining the complete pole figure is that developed by Schulz. A flat reflection sample is used for determining the pole figure from the center out to about 70". Because of the geometry of the system used, little or no correction for absorption or irradiated volume is necessary.4'6 A separate transmission sample is used for the region near the edge of the pole figure. This procedure requires two separate samples, one of which must be a thin carefully-prepared transmission sample. Furthermore, since the reflection and transmission data are in different arbitrary intensity units, a region of overlap must be obtained, and the intensity data from one set of measurements converted to units of the other. These are serious disadvantages of this method, and they point out the need for a simplified procedure. Since the reflection technique can be used for planes whose normals lie up to about 70° from the sample surface normal, it is apparent that a complete pole figure can be obtained by reflection alone if sample surfaces are cut at oblique angles to the rolling plane Specifically, if a rolled sample is cut so that the normal to the surface formed lies equidistant (54" 44') from the rolling plane normal, rolling direction, and transverse direction, then complete information for one quadrant of the pole figure can be obtained by reflection from the surface. Fig. 1 shows this oblique surface, as well as the position of the pole of this surface in the pole figure. When a surface has been cut oblique to the rolling plane, the standard polar stereographic net is inconvenient to use, and it would be more desirable to have the center of the net coincide with the pole of the oblique plane. Fig. 2 shows such a net, where the center has been offset 54' 44' to correspond to a specimen cut as in Fig. 1. This net was in effect obtained by rotating a standard polar stereographic net 54" 44' with the help of a Wulff net. With the experimental setup used. a sample can be cut from plate of 1/2-in. thickness or br Gen- erally thinner sheet is under investigation, and a composite specimen must be used. A convenient procedure has been to bond together, using epoxy resin, sufficient sheets to form a cube. These are clamped in a vise, and when dry, the whole vise is rotated and a flat surface ground at the required angle. The sample is then mounted inside a larger steel ring using Koldmount, the backside ground flat and parallel to the approximate desired thickness. The sample is then polished and etched to remove any effects of cold working during grinding. With this method only one quadrant of the pole figure is obtained. Often pole figures show symmetry around the rolling and transverse directions, and any slight asymmetry is due to scatter. Should the pole figure not be symmetrical, four oblique surfaces, corresponding to the four quadrants of the pole figure, would have to be examined. In most cases there is symmetry at least around the rolling direction, which reduces to two the number of quadrants to be investigated. For many purposes all that is required is an average polefigure for the four quadrants. This canreadilybe obtained with composite specimens of sheet material, where sheets Corresponding to each of the four quadrants can be intermixed. The four quadrants can be obtained by considering sheet in the normal position, and by rotatiolls of 180" around the sheet normal, the rolling direction, and the transverse direction. If desired, the whole thickness of the sheet can be used, yielding an average of the surface and interior textures; or the surface material can be removed from each sheet, resulting in a pole figure for the center alone. Eugene S. Meieran of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has independently developed the same method. His results, adapted to a pole figure goniometer with a specimen spiraler, will be described in another publication.

Bauxite, the principal source of aluminum, has been mined from deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., since 1899; war needs have greatly stimulated production. Many of the ore deposits are basin-shaped and either outcrop or are covered by a shallow-depth overburden at their peripheries; these are mined by stripping and open-pit methods. When stripping becomes economically impracticable, incline shafts or slopes are sunk on the dips of the deposits, and underground mining is done on the retreat, using a room-and-pillar method.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.
