FOR a better understanding of the melting and refining processes, the oxygen content of the steel bath should be determined. The oxygen content influences many process and product variables such as the efficiency of alloy recoveries, the ingot structure (through reaction with carbon in the steel), certain reaction rates, cleanliness (formation of indigenous oxide inclusions), and mechanical properties. Many methods of sampling liquid steel for oxygen have been devised. These methods can be divided into two main groups: 1) taking samples directly in the furnace or ladle;'-'0 2) removing the metal from the furnace or ladle in a sampling spoon and pouring it into a mold, or drawing the metal from the spoon into a sample holder.11-l4 The advantages and disadvantages of the two general sampling methods are presented in Table I. The bomb-sampling technique described by Huff, Bailey, and Richards8 has been used by the Crucible Steel Co. in certain research projects where oxygen contents were needed. It was recognized that a localized boiling condition could result when the mold is introduced into the steel bath, although the work of Gilbert and Bailey9 seems to indicate that the carbon boil occurring in the bomb-sampler cavity has a negligible effect on the oxygen content. In order to confirm the reported negligible effect of a carbon boil, additional work was done with adaptations of the conventional bomb sampler. The methods used are shown in Fig. 1 and are as follows: 1) Type A: aluminum wire (0.125-in. diam) coil in cavity; steel cap over mouth 2) Type B: aluminum cup in cavity; aluminum cap over mouth, 3) Type C: aluminum cup in cavity; steel cap over mouth, 4) Type D: fine aluminum wire (0.013-in. diam) in cavity; steel cap over mouth. The amount of aluminum wire in the Type A and D samples varied from 0.8 to 1.2 pct of the sample weight. The aluminum cups averaged 2.0 pct of the sample weight; the latter were used to ensure that the steel contacting the walls of the bomb cavity was fully killed. Samples were taken from plain carbon heats made in open-hearth furnaces. This grade of steel before silicon additions is essentially an Fe-C alloy and the effects of other alloying elements on the oxygen activity can be neglected. The results of sampling with the bomb samplers is shown in Fig. 2 where the percent oxygen is plotted against the percent carbon on log-log paper. Spoon sample results on the same grade of steel where the sample was killed in the spoon are shown in Fig. 3. The oxygen contents were determined by the vacuum fusion method. Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). DUWEZ1 has shown that pure titanium and pure zirconium transform martensitically during rapid cooling at temperatures about 30° and 15°C re spectively below their To temperatures. Holden et al.2 determined M, temperatures of Ti-Cu alloys by a metallographic technique applied to isothermally treated samples. Their results, superposed on the McQuillan3 version of the partial Ti-Cu diagram are shown in Fig. 1. Sources of metals were: Titanium: Iodide bar; Foote Mineral Co. Ltd. Zirconium: Iodide bar; Foote Mineral Co. LM. Copper: Spectrographic Standard; Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. Alloys were prepared by levitation melting under argon to the following nominal compositions:* 0.5, Quenching, at rates to about 8000°C per sec, was performed by cooling in a stream of helium (99.999 pct pure) a 3/64 in. cube of material previously heated by a tungsten coil in a system operating at. 10-5 mm Hg. Cooling rates below 200°C per sec w were obtained by controlling the current to the heater coil. The specimen was supported on a 32 gage Pt, Pt-Rh thermocouple attached through a DC amplifier to an Edin magnetic oscillograph (Model 8082) with a maximum chart speed of 250 mm per sec. Transformation temperatures were read off the oscillograph charts at the location of the beginning of the thermal arrest. The same specimen was quenched several times, and all runs were repeated on new samples. Regular calibrations of the oscillograph against a potentiometer were made between quenching experiments. The criterion of martensite formation was the effect of surface rumpling. Previously polished samples that showed a rumpled surface after transformation are assumed to have undergone martens itic transformation: transformations of a diffusion type produce no surface disturbance, Figs. 2 and 3. Electrochemical measurements were made in a cell described elsewhere4 whose electrodes were the martensitic and the diffusion-transformed materials in the following electrolytes:

THE present note is intended as an addition to my previous communication on the volumetric determination of manganese, read at the Roanoke meeting," it having been suggested that the circumstances under which my experiments had been conducted, were essentially different from those met with in the analysis of irons. The method used in these experiments is the same in all its details as that described in the paper referred to. I have made seven experiments in all: two of these were in duplicate on half a gramme of a sample of spiegel dissolved in hydrochloric acid; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 25 C.C. of a standard solution of potassium permanganate; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 35 C.C. permanganate and much organic matter, viz., one drop of castor-oil, two or three drops of coal-tar benzol arid of gasolene (petroleum), about ten of alcohol, portions of starch and of sugar about the size of a small pea, and about half an inch of a common match cut into shavings. This organic matter was added to the manganese solution after the hydrochloric acid had been replaced by nitric, and the solution was heated until the wood-shavings had disappeared. The fifth experiment was made by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel alone in nitric acid; the sixth by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in nitric acid with the addition of 25 C.C. potassium permanganate, some oxalic acid, half an inch of a match, one filter-paper 7 cm. in diameter, and two drops each of castor-oil and turpentine; and the seventh experiment by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in hydrochloric acid and adding 35 C.C. permanganate, without however taking the precaution to evaporate off all the excess of hydrochloric acid. The paper presents an overview of SPASID (Kiusalaas and Albert, 1983), a new computer program developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines funding for the prediction of surface subsidence caused by under- ground mining operations. The presentation, which is illustrated with two case studies, also re-evaluates the influence function method as a tool of subsidence prediction, arriving at some rather unconventional recommendations. SPASID consists of four modules that communicate through common data bases: (1) Preprocessor. This module prepares and maintains the database for the entire site. The database contains all the information about the site and the mine operation that is necessary for the computation of subsidence. (2) Subsidence Predictor. The influence function method is used to predict the surface displacements that occur in any portion of the site that occur between two given dates. The computations take into account the time lag between extraction and displacement, and the effects of pitching seams and incomplete compaction at the edges of panels. The program contains i not he's influence function and the Green's function of transversely isotropic elasticity theory. (3) System Identification. The purpose of System Identification is to determine the optimal values of the various parameters associated with the influence functions in the Subsidence Module. System Identification requires measurements of subsidence from a site with a sirnilar overburden structure. The values of the subsidence parameters are obtained by minimizing the discrepancy between the measured and computed surface displacements. (4) Postprocessor. The Postprocessor is a graphics facility for displaying the data generated by the other program modules.

For light buildings on clay, foundations on L/C-columns is in many cases a competitive alternative to piles when the thickness of the clay is moderate (<20 m). The method is applicable for the above mentioned depth when the clay is normally consolidated, and for thicker deposits when the clay is overconsolidated at depth. This case study concerns a shopping mall in Nordby, Sweden, founded on L/C-columns (5-15 m in length) and generally spaced 1.45-2.0 m (spacing 0.7 m was used below pillars). The base slab was built as a raft foundation, using fibre reinforced concrete.

"AbstractA laboratory work was performed to study the mechanical behavior of a Portuguese soft soil chemically stabilized with binders and reinforced with metallic fibers when subjected to tensile stresses. To this end and in order to compare the tensile strength results done by two different tests, there were conducted two types of experimental tests: Tensile Split Strength Tests (TS) and Direct Tensile Strength Tests (T). The samples tested had the same binder quantity and different fiber contents, which allowed the characterization of the tensile behavior of the stabilized and reinforced soil, as well as the definition of the best fiber content. Results show that the binder is the main parameter controlling the behavior of the stabilized and reinforced soil until failure, while the influence of the fibers is noticed mainly at the post-failure behavior. The comparison between the tensile strength done by T and TS tests shows that the tensile split test can be used to estimate the tensile strength, although its results are lower than those obtained by the direct tensile tests in general.IntroductionDue to its poor mechanical characteristics, the construction on soft soils presents difficulties that require the use of soil improvement techniques such as chemical stabilization. However, even when mixed with binders, the tensile strength of the stabilized soil is poor, requiring, in certain cases, the use of expensive steel reinforcement or metallic beams, with obvious impact on the final cost of the work. Thus, for the cases where the tensile strength is a design requirement, the soil stabilization should be design with another element, whose primary role is to give tensile strength to the improved soil (Teles 2013).To fill the lack of published studies focused on soft soils both chemically stabilized and reinforced with metallic fibers, the present research aims to analyze the behavior of the improved soil when subjected to tensile stresses. To support the research there were conducted direct tensile tests (T) to directly measure the tensile strength of the samples and tensile split tests (TS) or Brazilian tests to obtain it indirectly. The samples tested had the same binder quantity but five different fiber contents in order to study the influence of the fibers in the improved soil behavior. In addition, a comparison between the results of both tests was made."

"The McLeod sand pits, on the northeast side of the Little Ocmulgee River in Wheeler County, Ga., opposite Lumber City in Telfair Co., were examined by the Bureau of Mines under its war program of Investigation of Critical and Essential Minerals. The pits are about a quarter of a mile above the bridge, which is half a mile above Lumber City. Mrs. A. T. McLeod of Lumber City owns the land, including the pits. The property was inspected by an engineer of the Bureau of nines on March 8, 1945, on recommendation of Capt. Garland Peyton, director, Division of nines, Mining, and Geology of Georgia.The Mcleod pits are at the northwestern extremity of a mile-long series of old pits that were worked from about 1900 until the 1920's. The burning of the spur railroad bridge connecting the pits with the Southern Railway at Lumber City stopped mining operations. The pits on the south-east, or opposite, side of the Glennwood Road from the McLeod pits were first worked by F. L. Hinson and later, in 1921, by Mrs. n. H. Mobley. The glass sand was shipped to Tallapoosa, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tenn., where it was used in the manufacture of bottles for soft drinks. Some of the sand was used as molding and construction material. The sand was mined by hand shoveling it into wheelbarrows, which were unloaded on freight cars. The pits were partly refilled with overburden, so that it is impossible to estimate even roughly the amount of sand excavated.Analyses of samples of glass sand made years age3/ and later in 19404/ roughly check those made by the Bureau of Mines laboratory, except that in the former the iron oxide content usually was greater, attaining a maximum of 0.72 percent.The sand pits are in a valley slightly more than a quarter of a mile wide that lies along the northeast side of the Little Ocmulgee River. The land is either flat or marked by ridges only a few feet high. . A rather thick growth of scrub trees covers most of the valley. The surrounding country consists of gently rolling farm lands. The altitude of the valley is not known, but, judging by its distance from the seashore, it probably is about 200 feet. In addition to the Glennwood highway, which crosses the valley, several old sand roads lead to the pits."

In this paper a statistical multi-scale method for the mechanics parameter prediction of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is presented. First the micro-structure of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is represented. Then the statistical second-order two-scale method for the mechanics performance predictions of the rock mass structure with random cracks/joints distribution is presented, including the statistical second-order two-scale expression on the vector-valued displacement, strain tensor and stress tensor, and the algorithm procedure of statistical multi-sale computation for the mechanics parameters. Finally some numerical results for mechanical parameters for the rock mass with random distributions of multi-scale joints/cracks by statistical multi-scale method are shown.

"Because the operation of tethered underwater vehicles in the deep ocean or under drifting ice areas is very complicated or impossible, the application of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) is preferred or even the only possible solution. However, this implies the possibility of a direct and real-time control over all AUV functions, which is only achievable with the availability of accurate positioning/navigation and a high-speed communication link. This paper presents a flexible bottom- or surface-based solution enabling high positioning accuracy of underwater objects (harvester, AUVs, bottom nodes); specifically, a multifunctional system that combines Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) transceivers and Long BaseLine (LBL) stations deployed at a large depth. Moreover, each baseline transponder is equipped with a high-speed communication device to provide the means for real-time AUV control based on the information about its current position, e.g. navigate it with direct commands and operating its actuators and other mechanisms. Moreover a communication link with a high data rate can provide valuable visual information from the operation area.Depending on how many nodes the LBL grid comprise has, target transponder positions can be estimated with an accuracy of several to tens of centimetres. The purpose of the paper is to present the experiments with all key elements of the multifunctional Hydro-Acoustic USBL-aided LBL Positioning and Communication System."

"Abstract -Borate minerals, such as colemanite, ulexite and borax, have been reported in Tertiary continental basins of West Anatolia, Turkey, and Samos Island, Greece.Tuffaceous rocks interbedded with the borates are rich in authigenic silicate minerals such as zeolites, potassium feldspar and opal-CT, all of which have a genetic association with the borates. Chemical analyses of the tuffaceous rocks show variation in major elements due to the varying percentage of carbonaceous, detrital, and volcanic derived material.The volcanic activity in the vicinity of each particular lacustrine basin created ion-rich fluids from which a series of borates were precipitated under arid climate. Additionally, the saline-alkaline character of these fluids was responsible for the diagenesis of the silicic glass of the tuffaceous rocks, altering them to silicates and silica polymorphs."

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

Although I will briefly review the current status of coal slurry pipeline technology, I wish to make it clear that this is not a technical paper. It is intended instead to review the current situation on energy resources and requirements, and the environmental, political and economic considerations that mandate a serious consideration of Slurry pipelines as a viable mode of coal transportation into the Georgia and Florida markets. In order to more fully appreciate our current energy situation, it will be helpful to go back a few years and review the evolution of our so-called energy "problem." It was about two decades ago that the first and only major natural gas transmission pipeline was built into the State of Florida by Florida Gas Company. This line was conceived and implemented during a time when gas was plentiful and cheap, and it appeared at that time that unlimited gas reserves were continually being discovered, thus assuring the availability of a clean, cheap fuel and the ,viability of the pipeline system. One of the major factors justifying the original pipeline construction as well as subsequent expansions was a series of long-term commitments under which Florida Gas transported natural gas owned by electric utilities for use as boiler fuel. Thus for the past 20 years Florida industry, commerce, and domestic fuel requirements have been met either directly or indirectly through clean, cheap natural gas which would not have been otherwise available without the pipeline system.

Workers exposed to vibrating hand tools are at risk of developing symptoms such as cold-induced vasospasms, loss of tactile sensitivity, and loss of grip strength in the fingers and hands. These symptoms are known collectively as vibration white finger (VWF) or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Symptoms of VWF or HAVS are in part due to repeated and prolonged peripheral vasoconstriction[1, 2]. The reduction in blood flow that occurs with vasoconstriction can result in oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) in soft tissues, such as nerves and muscle, and lead to functional and structural changes in these tissues. The present study examined muscle tissue to determine if vibration-induced changes in transcript levels and protein concentrations result in enhanced vasoconstriction and hypoxia. Manual dexterity was also assessed intermittently to determine if vibration-induced changes in cellular factors are accompanied by performance deficits. Methods An animal model was developed to study the biological and functional changes that occur in response to repeated segmental vibration exposures. In this model, the right paw of intact rats was exposed to a platform vibrated at a frequency 250 Hz and amplitude of 49 m/s2 to simulate the vibration characteristics of hand-held grinders. Three groups of 8 rats each were studied: a vibration-exposed group, an exposure-control group, and a cage-control group. Exposure sessions, with or without vibration, were conducted 4 hr/day, 5 days/week for 5 weeks. Manual dexterity was assessed intermittently during the 5-week exposure period with the Montoya stair-case test[3], which quantifies the rat’s ability to reach for, grasp, and retrieve small food pellets placed below the rat on different levels or steps. Following the 5-week exposure period, the flexor muscles of the right forelimb were collected for analysis of gene expression, protein concentrations, and immunohistochemistry. Results Vibration-exposure resulted in an approximate 2-fold increase in the expression of a2C and a1D receptor transcripts in flexor muscles (Figure 1). These receptors mediate norepinephrine-induced vasoconstriction in smaller arteries. Vibration-exposure also resulted in an approximate 2-fold increase in hypoxia-induced factor-1a (HIF-1a), a transcription factor that is expressed in response to tissue hypoxia. Western analyses demonstrated that restraint caused a decrease in a1-receptor protein concentrations in the flexor, but vibration-exposure prevented the restraint-induced reduction (Figure 2). Immunohistochemistry performed on flexor muscles (not shown) demonstrated that a1 receptors are primarily located in arteries; maintained levels of these receptors could contribute to prolonged vasoconstriction following repeated vibration exposure. The staircase test showed some performance improvement, or a training effect, in manual dexterity for the control groups but not the vibration-exposed group (Figure 3).

Preamble At the present time many bodies are engaged in -the formulation of standards. There is no uniformity in the rules for such procedure in the different organizations; in some cases the committees engaged in the work are not fully representative, and in. a considerable proportion of cases they do not consult all of the allied interests. The present custom results in a considerable duplication of work, and in some fields several "standards" are proposed for the same thing, differing from one another only slightly and often in unimportant details. It is very much more difficult to obtain agreement between the proposers of overlapping standards after they have been published than it would be to get the proposers to agree before they had committed themselves publicly. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society for Testing Materials have appointed a committee to consider the advisability of cooperating in engineering standardization. This committee recommends that these societies form a permanent organization by appointing a committee as proposed in the following constitution and rules of procedure to carry on this very important work.

The Top-Loaded Bi-Directional Test (―TLBT‖) and the conventional Bi-Directional Load Test (―BDLT‖) are full-scale static load test methods. In both methods, the test loads are applied bi-directionally to the deep foundation. The advantages of the conventional BDLT have been well established for cost efficient static load testing of deep foundations, particularly for large diameter, high-capacity drilled foundations. A conventional BDLT applies the bi-directional test loads using an embedded jack and bearing plates. The TLBT method also applies the bi-directional test load to embedded bearing plates but does so using reusable high-strength threaded bars attached to an above-grade hydraulic jack and load transfer assembly. The new TLBT method is well suited for load testing shafts of a moderate diameter, length, and nominal resistance or ultimate load. TLBT advantages include economic considerations resulting from the method’s reusable load application components and constructability considerations as it readily accommodates a center concrete tremie pipe or pump line location. This paper presents comparison results from full-scale load tests performed using both bi-directional load testing methods. Adjacent 3-foot diameter by 30-foot long BDLT and TLBT shafts were tested. Details regarding subsurface conditions and test shaft construction are included for the comparison of the TLBT and BDLT results. Corresponding test data and analyses for both test shafts are presented and discussed in detail. The BDLT shaft had a maximum uni-directional load of 240 kips at upper and lower bearing plate displacements of 0.5 and -3.8 inches, respectively. The TLBT had a maximum uni-directional load of 300 kips at upper and lower bearing plate displacements of 1.0 and -5.9 inches, respectively. These results as well as the load-transfer behavior and equivalent top loading curve results from the adjacent BDLT and TLBT drilled shafts are discussed. The paper also discusses the strain gage instrumentation on the TLBT load application bars and on the embedded bearing plates.

Moving bed has been widely used in the field of heat and mass transfer and reaction between solid particles and gas. In order to enhance the heat exchange coefficient, there will be tube banks inserted in the moving bed. In the process of drying ammoniates particles or heat recovery from high-temperature particles with moving bed, the particles flow behavior around the tube banks is significant. In this paper, the particles flow behavior around the tube banks is investigated, and all the results can provide guidance for the design and operation of a moving bed.

During the past 20 years, improved computer modeling of this process has resulted in new and promising computational tools for improving explosive mining and excavation procedures. This paper discusses one of these new computational tools, a computer model called BFRACT."
