The Stillwater District is located in south central Montana approximately 75 miles southwest of Billings, the state's largest city. It lies along the northeast front of the Beartooth Mountains and is within the boundaries of the Custer and Gelatin National Forests. The district contains some of the nation's most spectacular mountain scenery. Montana's highest peaks, including 12,799 foot Granite Peak, rise a few miles south of the area. Much of the district is located on a gently undulating plateau which averages 8500 ft. above sea level, broken by hills up to 10,000 feet and slashed by glacially carved canyons, some of which are more than 3,000 feet deep.(Fig. 1) Immediately to the north and east, the land falls away to the Great Plains, stretching unbroken to the Mississippi River. Two major tributaries of the Yellowstone River, the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers, traverse the area and several large streams originate in the district itself. Access to the high mountain country and the adjoining Beartooth Primitive Area is restricted to a few horse and jeep trails continuing from the terminus of improved roads in the bottom of the Stillwater and Boulder Valleys. Hunters, fishermen and cabin owners make intensive use of the area along its improved transportation routes, but hikers seldom venture more than three miles beyond the end of the roads. People from the Billings area are the most frequent visitors.

[Testing explosives for safe use in coal miner ran boon an important factor in preventing mine explosions. In the United States, explosives that have been approved by the Bureau of Mines are called permissible explosives. A purvey of the history of coal mining since permissibility testing welt, instituted some 4 years ago shown that there is no record of a coal-mime explosion caused by permissible explosives when used in a manner prescribed by the Bureau. To maintain the appropriate standards of quality, the Bureau of Mines conducts a series of examinations and tenth on samples of explosives collected in the field. In what is considered the most crucial test, teat 1, the explosives An fired from a steel cannon into a gallery atmosphere containing a mixture of natural gas and air, In another important test, test 4, the explosives charge to fired into a mixture of natural gas, air, and coal diet. To satisfy the permissibility requirements, the explosive must undergo throe gallery teats without igniting gas or coal duet. Other tests also are required for permissibility, but they do not come within the scope of the present paper, which studies the factors affecting the incendivity of explosives when fired into methane, air, and/or coal-dust mixtures. Experirmental bonds of Ag-In SLID to gold, copper, nickel, Kovar, Dumet, nickel-plated molybdenum, ALL-Pt vrzetallizing on ceramic, and nickel-plated Mo-Ti metallizing on Al2O3 ceramic have been made and exalnined. Metallographic taper sections were made of all bonds for Phase identification. In addition, failuve temperatltres were determined for bonds heated undev shear load. Sowe bonds were subjected to electvon-probe microanalysis. The ternary SLID system Ag-In-Sn was similarly evaluated. Plwtonticrogaphs and electron-probe data are discussed and related to over-all phase diagrams , diffusion effects, and wetting properties of the liquid. The rates of diffusion andor compound formation of gold, silver, and copper in indium and In-Sn liquids are found to descend in that order, as measured by the relatzve thickness of phase layers in the interfaces of bonds made at 200to 400°C. It is concluded that the SLID process enables one to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures, and meet most requirements for application in interconnection, silicon bonding, or hermetic sealing of electronic devices. In a previous publication by one of the authors, the theory and principle of SLID bonding in simple binary systems was discussed. SLID bonding can be defined as a joining process using a preform with a laminated structure: a low-melting material clad on a high-melting core. During the bonding cycle a metallurgical transformation occurs such that the resultant structure can withstand, without reliquefying, temperatures higher than those at which the bond was made. The phases present in the joint interface region are high-melting compounds or, if equilibrium is reached, solid solution. Properties will depend on the phases present, ultimately approaching those of the solid substrate core of the SLID preform. The high-temperature strength of bonds made in these systems was correlated to phase identification in the interfacial bond regions from metallographic cross sections and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis data. When complex electronic components are assembled, multiphase systems result at the interfaces of bond regions. In these ternary and higher-order systems very little diffusion and phase-diagram data is available with which to predict the nature of the interfacia1 region that will result from conventional fabrication processes and subsequent field use of the component. Clarke and Rhines did early work in the field using the Al-Mg-Zn system as a vehicle. Guy and co-workers studied a portion of the Cu-Zn-Ni system and some mathematical4 and general5 aspects of multiphase diffusion. irkald' and coworkerse recently studied diffusion in the Cu-Zn-Sn system. No diffusion studies have been made on ternary systems directly applicable to this investigation but some phase diagrams are available: g-u-n, u-i-n, and CU-i-n. I) DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The elements Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, In, and Sn are found in alloy systems commonly used in fabricating and assembling electronic components. Reference to the appropriate phase diagrams9 and the previous publication will indicate that the binary systems of any of the two low-melting elements, indium and tin, with any one of the other four higher-melting elements are capable of producing SLID bonds. It is not unreasonable to assume that any ternary or higher-order alloy system containing at least one of the elements gold, silver, copper, or nickel and one or both of the elements indium and tin could be used to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures. Indeed, the liquidus contours and isothermal sections of those phase diagrams available7 do so indicate. In dealing with the mining engineering problems, the traditional approaches of laboratory experimental simulations and/or analytical solutions are not very effective. Mainly because the field problems are too complex to be solved with a few simplified assumptions. Conversely it is also true that the experimental and analytical/ numerical models currently available are far from being able to model the actual cases. Under such conditions, the most effective mean of research into mining engineering problems is to combine the mine (field) investigations with laboratory and / or analytical modelings. It is with this concept in mind this research was initiated in 1973. 'The field investigations which began in the fall of 1978 consisted of mainly visiting the mines where surface subsidence monitorings had been or were being monitored and/or surface structural changes had occurred. From such visits, subsidence data were collected. A quick analysis of those data provided preliminary understandings of the characteristics of the surface subsidence parameters in the regions (1-5). Using those date, models of various types are being developed for subsidence prediction / control. So far, a total of 44 longwall subsidence profiles in 22 longwall panels and 10 room-and-pillar profiles in 5 room and-pillar sections have been collected. This paper summarizes the combined results published previously (1-5) and present the preliminary results of the predictive models developed.

"In port and harbor facilities, jetties and cargo berth terminals are usually installed on piles that remain partially embedded in soil, while a part of it behaves as columns supporting top deck. Technology in vogue adapts a pseudo static analysis in computer where the top deck including piles are analyzed as an integrated system based on finite element method when the piles are modeled as beam elements, while the soil in which it is embedded is modeled as linear or nonlinear springs. Typical berthing force of the ship is considered as a pseudo static force where the dynamic characteristics of the force is taken into consideration by an equivalent impact factor and little study exists on the actual behavior of these type of piles under the transient shock due to berthing impact. Present paper proposes an analytical solution based on which one can compute the dynamic response of such jetty piles considering shear modulus of soil constant with depth. Considering the solution is analytical in nature no special software is needed and can well be adapted fordesign office practice using generic utility software like MATHCAD, MATLAB etc. that makes theproposed model computationally very efficient.INTRODUCTIONResponse of piles under dynamic load has been an important study in the realms of civil engineering, where significant research has been carried out on its dynamic behavior under harmonic loads like one experienced in a machine foundation or under seismic force.A number of researchers have given solution to this problem like Parmelee et al (1964), Tajimi (1966), Penzien (1970), Novak et al (1974, 1983), Banerjee and Sen (1987), Dobry and Gazetas (1988),Chowdhury and Dasgupta (2008).However, most of these theories are based on piles loaded under harmonic load and valid for long piles where structural failure precedes the soil failure considering the piles are long and flexible."

The addition of coal preparation plants changed the coal industry during the past. Now it is time co once again improve the quality and types of coal products coming from future coal preparation plants to meet the changing needs of our society. Clean Coal Technology, along with federal support provided, is forcing our industry to provide cleaner coal products for industrial applications. Liquid fuels from coal is just one of many new products from a coal preparation plant that has a ready market in the transportation sector. UCC Research Corporation is developing these new liquid coal products and this paper will describe the progress and the new slate of coal products to be provided from future preparation plants.

Charles T. Holland (Head, Dept. of Mining Engineeri*, Virginia Polytechnical Inst., Blacksburg, Va.) Mr. Wuerker has presented a very interesting discussion of the use of triaxial test methods for investigating the strength properties of rocks. Such methods, no doubt, eventually will develop considerable information of interest to those concerned with the design of mine layouts, particularly in the field of pillar design. From his discussion of my recent article, "Cause and Occurrence of Coal Mine Bumps" (Holland Mining Engineering 1958, p. 933-1002), it is evident that in one place at least I did not make my meaning clear to him and perhaps others. To clear the matter up I think it best to quote from the article, somewhat more fully than did Mr. Wuerker, as follows: "4) In actual operations — because rocksare not perfectly elastic, homogeneous, nor isotropic and because local yield does occur — the maximum stress as demonstrated by Phillips (Ref. 22, pp. 64, 65) and indicated by much experience in mining, does not occur at the walls of the opening but at a short distance inside the pillar. Furthermore, the maximum stress does not reach as great a value as theoretical considerations and laboratory experimental methods indicate.* Actual distance inside the pillar, measured from the wall, at which the maximum stress exists, has not been determined. Observations in many mines, however, indicate that this distance could have a mini-value of one to six or eight times the bed thickness and that it is probably affected by width and height of the opening, depth of cover, and relative values of the elasticity and plasticity of materials comprising the roof, floor, and coal seam. The actual value of the stress produced probably lies between the theoretical maximum and the average stress concentration that would be produced if the weight of the strata above the unsupported opening were evenly distributed over the pillars for a distance equal to the opening width." The footnote reference in the above quotation referred to the following: "*For example, the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia is mined under cover up to 1800 ft thick. Development openings are driven 18 to 20 ft wide, and the bed is about 6 ft thick. According to the work of Panek, the tangential wall stress at mid-bed height under these conditions would reach values between 4000 and 5000 psi. Actual tests of 3-in. cubes of this coal show its compressive strength would be much less than this, perhaps as low as 400 psi. Yet the pillars usually show no evidence of failure in these headings. In this same bed at a depth of 800 ft, the author has seen an opening 225 ft between supports lying between two old groves approximately 1100 ft apart. According to the theoretical considerations, the stress in the pillar walls would have been about 18,000 psi, yet the pillar showed little or no evidence of weight. In view of these observations, it is clear that the wall stress does not attain the maximum values indicated by theory." (Underlining added to original wording.) By referring to Fig. 2A of my paper it will be noted that theoretically the maximum pillar stress would occur at the pillar wall, i.e., at the passageway surface of the pillar. Obviously this cannot be correct in the cases of stress ranging from 4000 to 18000 psi since the coal at the surface of the pillar is under no constraint and cannot have a strength much greater than 400 or 500 psi. Hence, my conclusion that the maximum stress does not occur at the wall but back in the pillar some distance from the wall. Since these stresses are pushed back in the pillar from the wall, it is also obvious that the loads transferred to the pillar from the opening will be spread over a greater area and hence Pillar stresses will not rise to the values postulated by theory and photoelastic experiment. Further since to visual inspection the coal along the pillar wall did not appear to be failed the conclusion was reached that the stress shift was caused by local elastic or plastic yield and by difference in the elastic modulus of the rocks composing the mine floor, mine roof, and coal bed. Later on under the heading "Strength of Mine Pillars" (pages 1000-1002) the effects of constraint is briefly described. Also a formula taking into account constraint is developed relating pillar strength to the uniaxial strength of coal and the L/T ratio of the pillar. Since my paper was written, reports of experiments conducted in South Africa (Denkhaus, et. al., 1959), in Sweden (Hast 19581, and in Canada (McInnes, et.al., 1959) reveal that the conclusion expressed relative to the existence of a low stress area existing around the edges of pillars and solid faces as described above is generally correct. A copper alloy containing- 25.5 at, pct Zn and 19.0 at. pct Ni, which was previously found to show an anoma1old.s hardening effect on quenching- from 600 "C and aging- at 400oc, has now been examined by neutron diffraction. No evidence of long-range order was found. The aged sample showed diffuse scattering- consistent with clustering. The anomalous hardening effect is now attributed to lattice strains caused by clustering rather than (long-range) order hardening. SOLID-solution Cu-Ni-Zn alloys (the commercial 'nickel silvers") have been reported to show anomalies in: change of resistivity on cold working,1-6 temperature coefficient of resistance,2-12 resistivity at low temperatures,13,14 parameter (vs temperature),2"4 calorimetric data,2,4 specific heat,15,16 dilation,2-4 and elastic modulus.17 The structure responsible for the anomalies is produced by annealing typically near 400°C and is rather loosely referred to as the ('K-Zustands" (K state), a term coined by Thomas1' who apparently meant simply that the arrangement of atoms on the sites deviated from that expected statistically. Thomas proposed that the K state occurred in a variety of (solid-solution) alloys such as Cu-Ni-Zn, Ni-Cr, Ni-A1, Ni-Cu, Fe-A1, and Fe-Si and is recognized because its formation is strongly temperature-dependent and results in an increase in electrical resistance which can then be decreased by cold working. Later workers on ('nickel silver" have interpreted the K state variously as short-range order, long-range order. or a combination. The present work was prompted by the discovery by Phillips and Jones19 of a substantial hardening effect when an 18 pct "nickel silver" alloy which is fairly close to the Cu2NiZn composition, was reheated in the range 150" to 450 C after previously quenching from 600°C or, alternatively. was slow-cooled from 600°C or above. The phenomenon was attributed to (long-range) order hardening. Due to the similarity in the atomic scattering factors of copper. nickel, and zinc atoms, the ''nickel silvers" are unfavorable for X-ray diffraction studies aimed at detecting ordering. Nevertheless Bialas et a1.,20 using a powder sample containing 47.96 wt pct Cu, 24.03 wt pct Ni, and 27.98 wt pct Zn, slow-cooled from 400" to 200°C taking 500 hr, observed weak super lattice lines. Further unpublished work" using an anomalous dispersion X-ray technique indicates that zinc atoms are regularly ordered at the corner points of the lattice cell, while the nickel and copper atoms are statistically distributed on the remaining sites. Köster 17 also observed X-ray superlattice lines, for example, in an alloy containing 43.5 wt pct Cu, 28.6 wt pct Ni, and 27.9 wt pct Zn superimposed on the basic fcc cell with a = 3.62 kX. He proposed a Cu3Au-type superlattice with the Ll2 structure in which the A sites were statistically occupied by copper and nickel atoms and the B sites by zinc. He adds that substitution must be possible so that zinc atoms partly occupy A sites. Below about 35 pct Cu, Koster had some evidence for a CuAu-type superlattice with the Llo tetragonal fcc structure with a = 3.82 kX, c/a = 0.88 which could be preserved by quenching. This is suggested17722 to correspond to CuNiZn. While the present work was in progress Hirabaya-shi et a1.23 made an independent comprehensive neutron-diffraction study of a single crystal containing 50.05 at. pct Cu, 26.57 at. pct Ni, 0.25 at. pct Mn, 0.13 at. pct Fe, balance zinc. The presence of manganese and iron is surprising since the crystal was supposedly grown from high-purity metals. The homogenized crystal showed evidence of long-range ordering after an anneal of 5 months at about 300°C. Three possible crystal models were proposed. A curious feature of their results23 is that they could not find any neutron-diffraction evidence of ordering in a powdered polycrystalline near-stoichiometric Cu2NiZn alloy. There appears to be some essential difference between a near-stoichiometric Cu2NiZn alloy and one somewhat further off stoichiometry as used by the present authors. Thus Sato14 was able to reproduce the low-temperature resistivity anomaly reported by one of the authors13 on the present alloy if he used a similar composition, but found the normal behavior of the residual resistivity in a near-stoichiometric alloy. satol2 found that the resistivity of a cold-drawn slightly off-stoichiometric alloy increased to a maximum on isothermally annealing at 300°C and then decreased ("over-aged"). Since he could not explain this on the basis of ordering phenomenon, he proposed that zinc atoms were segregating to stacking faults (Suzuki effect) and found etching bands on the surface by replication which were attributed to the widening of faults. Sato suggested14 that the hardening effect observed by Phillips and Jones19 is partly due to the Suzuki effect. "The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

Time-dependent ground behavior may have important implications for the construction process or the life of a tunnel. The paper gives a concise overview of the influence of time on the deformations and the stability of underground openings, including topics such as face stability in soft ground or the time-development of pressure or deformations in squeezing or swelling rock. While keeping in mind practical questions of tunnel engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding the observed time-dependency, on the underlying mechanisms (such as pore water pressure dissipation or chemical processes) as well as on the respective inherent prediction-uncertainties and design-uncertainties.

THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. The validity of the concept of mine resistance in ventilation systems is examined. Mine resistance is the proportionality constant relating the head generated by a fan and the quantity flowing through it when the fan is connected to a mine circuit. It is the total effect of all branches in the mine ventilation circuit. Its importance lies in the fact that for new mine projections, and in the extensions of existing mines, ventilation calculations are usually based upon adjustments of the mine resistance. In ventilation circuits with regulation, and/or with multi-fans, simple adjustments of the mine resistance curve do not lead to correct solution. A ventilation system consists of several interconnected subsystems where one subsystem behavior affects that of the others, and the total system. Through a series of simple but realistic examples, the authors demonstrate the importance of the systems concept in mine ventilation, and its practical application to coal mine ventilation planning. Starting from an initial system with no leakage and one fan, more complex ventilation networks with several leakages, sections and fans, are analyzed to show that ventilation system design on the basis of total systems approach is the correct procedure.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

The spectral reflectivity of zirconium in light of 441 to 668 nanometers (nm) wavelengths and air immersion has been determined. Bireflectance and apparent-angle -of-rotation measurements show zirconium to be optically isotropic when examined in light of approximately 484 nm wavelength. There is a direct relationship between bireflectance and the tilt of the basal pole of zirconium from the surface normal. This relationship allows the determination of the spatial orientation of the basal pole of an individual single crystal within a coarse-grained poly crystalline section to within± 2 to 3 deg for angles of basal pole tilt from 0 to 90 deg. In recent years considerable attention has been given to the quantitative determination of optical properties of opaque minerals by use of vertically incident, plane-polarized light. In particular, Cameron' and Cameron et a1.2 have developed criteria for the identification of a large number of anisotropic ore minerals based upon measurement of the apparent angle of rotation and the ellipticity or phase difference of the reflected light. It was shown by Larson and Pickle-simer3 that apparent-angle-of-rotation measurements may also be used to determine crystallographic orientations of grains of noncubic metals. In particular, it was shown that the basa.1 pole orientation in space of zirconium grains can be determined to ±3 deg for those grains with basal pole tilts of 10 to 90 deg from the plane of the section. Another, even more widely studied, optical property is reflectivity. cameron4 has commented upon measurement of the reflectance of plane-polarized, vertically incident light and Bowie and Taylor5 have made such measurements an integral part of their system of ore-mineral identification. Leow6 has reported on the spectral reflectivity of molybdenite and has used reflectivity values to calculate refractive indices and absorption coefficients. Cameron7 has made use of reflectivity values to ascertain aniso-tropic ore mineral symmetry and Piller and v. Gehlen8 have evaluated sources and importance of errors in reflectivity measurements as applied to calculation of optical constants. cambon9 has shown that reflectivity measurements using vertically incident, plane-polarized light are useful in the investigation of metals and in the identification of phases present in alloys. Bronson10 has made preliminary measurements on the optical anisotropy of beryIlium and Mott and Haines11 have published qualitative data on the intensity of light reflected from sections of bismuth, tin, and aluminum when these metals are microscopically examined under crossed polarizing plates. Koritnig12 has correlated the reflectivity of homogeneous solid solutions with their chemical compositions. From the above work and investigations in progress by this author, it is apparent that accurately determined values for the reflectance of vertically incident, plane-polarized monochromatic light from carefully polished surfaces of noncubic metals can prove useful in identification, composition determinations, and crystallographic orientation applications. Finally, reflectivity values, when measured in two media of differing refraction index and related to standards whose spectral reflectivities in these media are known, can be used to calculate optical constants such as refractive index and absorption coefficient. These constants may prove of use to those concerned with problems of electron band configuration. This paper reports the spectral reflectivity of zirconium measured in light of 441 to 668 nanometers (nm) wavelengths and air immersion. It also gives maximum bireflectance values for a prism section of zirconium in these wavelengths and shows how bire-flectance may be used to determine the crystallographic orientation of zirconium single crystals. Because of the lack of information on the reflectivities of the standards in oil immersion, no attempt is made to calculate the refractive indices or absorption coefficients although it is recognized that such values may be of fundamental importance. METHOD Single crystals of zirconium were cut by electro-discharge machining from a single-crystal rod grown from iodide bar by an electron-beam zone-melting process.13 The crystal sections were mounted in cold-setting epoxy resin and mechanically polished to a plane, uniform, bright surface. Each crystal was then chemically polished in a 26/26/43/5 mixture (by vol) of water, nitric, lactic, and hydrofluoric acids to remove the mechanically damaged and smeared surface layer. Final polish was obtained by electropolishing at 30 v in a bath of methyl alcohol and perchloric acid (98/2 by vol) at -70oc.14 Reflectivity measurements were made using a photometer system designed and developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and described in detail by Larson.15 Briefly, the reflectivity measuring system consists of a reflecting microscope; a double-beam, null-balancing photometer array; a mechanically driven microscope stage; and a direct X-Y readout of the reflectivity of the specimen relative to its orientation on the microscope stage. The measuring photometer receives its signal from the specimen through a slotted Wright occular placed on top of the photovisual head of the microscope. The reference photometer receives light through a flexible glass "light pipe" from a mirror in the reflecting system of the microscope. Monochromatic light is attained through use of interference filters (15-nm half-peak width pass bands) placed in front of a stabilized Vickers 12 v, 100 w, tungsten-filament, quartz-iodide lamp.

The first study of this subject hits been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. It is hoped that the data obtained will assist the coal-mining industry to standardize the forms of leases, and so avoid some of the abstruse and ambiguous clauses which slay be found in many of them and the consequent liability of costly litigation. In some of the publications of the Illinois Mining; Investigations prepared under a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the coal areas of the 'State have been divided into eight geological districts, each district being treated separately. This report covers District No. VI of that classification, and it is hopped that studies of the other districts will be completed in the near future and similar results published.

The accommodations at the Conoco Club were just what was required for such a gathering; the committee having the arrangements in charge functioned with the efficiency of veterans and the enthusiasm of neophytes; and the members and guests followed the speakers with close attention, entered the subsequent discussions with gusto, and divulged the "low-down" at private conferences. No one minded the drizzling rain on the first day, which only served to keep up the attendance in the auditorium; the weather then cleared up in time for a group picture before the gathering went their separate ways.

For the purpose of developing combinations of higher strength and conductivity than are obtainable by heat treatment alone in the age-hardening copper alloys, an investigation has been made of the effects of combinations of heat treatment and strain hardening on the properties in question. The investigation was limited to a study of the alloys containing nickel and silicon; nickel, silicon and cadmium; and cobalt and silicon. The experiments made in the course of the study are described in this paper in three groups: 1. The effect of hard drawing subsequent to heat treatment on the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloys. 2. The effect of low-temperature aging on the properties of heat-treated and hard-drawn alloys. 3. The effect of strain on the rate of aging of quenched nickel-silicon-copper alloys.

This work focuses on the operational and safety issues associated with karst voids in large opening underground mines. Issues include water inrush, structural instability, and engineering uncertainty in these environments. Coupled with the fracturing prevalent in folded sedimentary rocks, karsts are complex and challenging ground control risks. Traditional methods of predicting karst locations, such as probe drilling, are impeded by the inconsistent spatial distribution and variable sizes of the features. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that transmits radio waves into a medium and subsequently detects reflected waves via a receiver. The travel time and energy of received signals are then processed and interpreted. The difference in material properties between limestone and open karsts causes strong reflections. GPR is frequently used as a geophysical surveying technique in several industries, however there is a lack of published research on underground mining GPR applications. The purpose of this work is to prove the viability of GPR in underground stone mines for karst detection, and to discuss the importance of karst detection ahead of mining. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) currently lists 116 active underground stone mines in the United States, the vast majority of which extract limestone for crushed stone products. These limestone mines have the potential to encounter karst voids at some point in their operation, as most karstic regions of the United States develop in limestone rock masses (Kuniansky, Weary, & Kaufmann, 2016). Karsts, the cavities formed by the dissolution of carbonate rock, have long plagued the mining and tunneling industries, as well as been a hindrance on the Earth’s surface, producing sinkholes and ruining otherwise valuable land for construction and public use. The impact of karsts on the Gavarres tunnel in Spain is well documented by Alija et al; constant instability conditions, material spills into the tunnel, and unexpected cavities seriously delayed the project deadlines and “were not foreseen in the design” (Alija, Torrijo, & Qunita-Ferreira, 2013). At the water supply project in Sohngua River, China, Bin et al detail the presence of both water and sediment filled karsts which are sources of disastrous conditions at this tunnel (Bin, et al., 2017). A hydrological tunnel in Lebanon encountered numerous massive karsts in the tunneling path which required remediation via friction anchors, rockbolts, welded wire fabric, channel steel arch segments, invert steel beams, and shotcrete (Leech, Jaoude, & Ghanem, 2008). From a design standpoint, rock mass classification schemes, such as the RMR from Bieniawski and the Q-system from Barton, are not able to represent the true nature of a karstified carbonate rock mass, and therefore complex case-by-case analyses of underground conditions are necessary (Andriani & Parise, 2017).
