An improved blotter model is described which makes use of a plastic sheet as base for the blotter field and pins to represent the input wells. The model is simple to construct and adapt and is particularly useful for demonstration purposes. Operational details are given. INTRODUCTION The blotter model was first applied to the investigation of oilfield problems by Wyckoff, Botset and Mus-kat,' primarily in order to demonstrate the flood patterns which could be expected from various arrangements of input and output wells in waterflooding projects. In recent years the model has been largely superseded for analog studies by the potentiometric and electric analog models which are more refined and versatile, since they can simulate the form, and, in certain cases, permeability variations which it is not possible to do with the blotter model. However, the latter is still used for analog studies where the reservoir can be represented as being uniform in thickness and permeability, and where a visual record of the flood advance is required. Ramey andNabor,2 for example, have applied the model to the investigation of areal sweeps in oil recovery by in-situ combustion. Because of its limitations, the blotter model can be used in general for only very simple arrangements of input and output wells, but within these limitations it has a definite advantage over all other types, in that it provides a picture of the advancing flood using the simplest and most easily constructed apparatus, by contrast with the gelatin model, for example, which requires more elaborate equipment. Moreover, the experiments can be quickly repeated and modified if necessary, whereas considerable time is required to prepare a gel field, compared with that required for the preparation of sheets of conducting blotting paper. For these reasons the blotter model can be very useful for demonstration and teaching purposes, enabling the student to experiment for himself with different arrangements of input and output wells. A model has been constructed for this purpose which is simple to operate and adapt. The model (Fig. 1) consists of a base platform or box, approximately 12-in. square, on top of which are screwed three lathes of 1/2 -in. square section to form three sides of a square 6 in. in length. This forms the support for a sheet of Cobex, transparent plastic, thickness .003 in., on which is carried the blotting paper representing the field. The plastic is flexible and relatively soft, and can be attached to the support by cellulose tape so that it can be easily removed when required. The input wells are represented by brass drawing pins pressed through the plastic sheet from the underside until the points are just projecting through the top; these are connected in the circuit as shown in Fig. 2. The sheet of blotting paper of required shape and size is saturated with a solution of 0.2 n-potassium sulfate to which has been added a saturated alcohol solution of phenol-phthalein at a strength of 10 cc/liter of stock solution. The surplus water is removed and the blotting paper placed in position on the plastic sheet making contact with the drawing pins and the sheet (which is an insulator). The anode consists of a second sheet of blotting paper cut as shown and saturated with the same solution. This is suspended from a laboratory stand, being connected to the conducting wire by means of a crocodile clip and making contact with the horizontal blotting paper at the projecting point. This is the method used by Ramey and Nabor and which permits the hydroxyl ions or colored front to reach the anode. As shown in Fig. 2, the electrical voltage used is 220-v DC and a shunt is placed across the terminals to step down the voltage as required. Two methods for the rapid valuation of oil properties are in common use. The one best known and most widely used is the "per barrel" value, based on the present daily production of the well, without regard to its past performance or the history of the sand or pool from which it produces. The second method is the "time to pay out," or the lengt of time required for a well to place itself upon the credit side of the ledger, from which time the returns from its production (less the operating expenses) will be clear profit. The time basis for valuation is also commonly used in the appraisal of an undeveloped lease. In most oil fields, it is not thought good business to invest in production that will not pay out in at least 4 to 5 years. Nearly all buyers (except in certain regions of very persistent production like the deep-sand territory of the Appalachian field) expect wells to pay out in considerably less time than this. Like the barrel-per-day price, the time necessary for a well to pay out has been determined for each field, so that one frequently hears a field or district referred to as having a certain time to pay out. This is considered the norm for that field or district and the buyer and seller base their value, to greater or less extent, on their belief in the accuracy of this time. The writer long ago became convinced of the inaccuracy of the barrel-per-day method, except when greatly modified for local conditions, such as the age of the wells, their economic limit, operating conditions in the field, the future price of oil, and the persistence of the sand as a producer. When so modified, this method becomes more of an analytic or predicted probable-yield valuation. While the appraiser may not go through each step in a valuation based on future returnable revenue, his knowledge of the field and the local conditions surrounding his leases make it possible for him to estimate a fair sales value that, in many cases, will be a close approximation to the truth. The Bureau of Mines analyzed 626 crude oils from 546 oilfields in the United States that produced 2,500 BOPD or more during at least 1 of the last 3 years. Included also are crude oil analyses from eight fields that produced less but which were located in areas having few or no fields that produced 2,500 BOPD. The tables show the geographical and geological source, general characteristics. and determined and computed analytical data for each sample. The analyses were made according to the Bureau of Mines routine method and are directly comparable to other previously published analyses.

Mont-Wright mining complex is an important asset of ArcelorMittal located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is composed by Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines, operating 365 days per annum, and producing 25 Mtpa of iron ore concentrate with 66 per cent Fe. Mont-Wright concentration plant is composed by seven lines with a flow sheet encompassing AG/SAG milling, primary and secondary classification stages, spiral concentrators (rougher, cleaner and recleaner stages) and dewatering unit operations. In this context, an equation called ‘Wrec’ was developed in 1971 with the objective of estimating the mass recovery of the different blocks in the beneficiation plant and support the mining planning works of Mont-Wright complex. This equation was based on the correlation between the results of heavy liquid tests performed with drill core samples and spiral concentrators pilot scale tests, returning an estimative of concentrator yield. However, since its first development, no updates have been done in the equation, which lead to some deviations from expected recoveries in the last years. This is probably due to the changes in the process and in the ore fed into the concentrator during the period. In this way, the study presented here corresponds to the execution of heavy liquid/spirals pilot scale tests with 26 composite samples collected at Mont-Wright deposit aiming at revising and updating ‘Wrec’ equation. Based on test work results, an updated formula was established to estimate the plant recovery and a comparison performed using industrial data showed that the old formula overestimated the real yield by 5.40 per cent, on average. At the end of the study the new equation was incorporated into the mining planning process.

"Energy consumption in electrolytic magnesium cells is well above the theoretical values. However, the mechanism of the back reaction, the main cause of the current losses, has not been fully understood yet. Magnesium dissolution into the melt is generally regarded as the limiting step for the back reaction. Accordingly, present cell designs are made with priority given to fast magnesium removal from the cell. However, experimental data and modeling results in this study indicate that the limiting step for the back reaction between magnesium and chlorine is the chlorine dissolution into the electrolyte when physical contact between electrolysis products was eliminated. Effects of chlorine bubbles on the current efficiency and the cell potential were investigated. Results show that the extent of back reaction is proportional to the chlorine surface area in contact with the electrolyte per unit time, and the cell potential increases with the amount of chlorine bubbles inside the electrolyte.1. IntroductionMagnesium is less dense than the electrolyte in electrolytic magnesium production. Therefore, both electrode products, magnesium and the chlorine gas, move upwards inside the molten salt electrolyte during electrolysis. The upward motion of electrode products promotes the most important current loss mechanism, the ""back reaction"". Separation of the highly reactive species; liquid magnesium and the chlorine gas in the cell, to prevent their recombination is one of the main concerns in cell designs. The employment of large inter-electrode distance or a separation wall in early cell designs; decreased the extent of recombination, but increased the cell voltage and energy consumption. Recent cell designs, on the other hand, make use of lifting action of chlorine gas [1,2] by utilizing smaller inter electrode distances to separate the magnesium and chlorine gas faster. Although energy consumption was reduced, but more physical interactions between electrode products make electrolytic magnesium cells still highly inefficient when energy consumptions are compared with the theoretical values. Today, the most efficient industrial cells utilizing high purity feed operate at 10.5-11.5 kWh kg-1 Mg [3-5] and it is considerably higher than the theoretically attainable value of about 6.0 kWh kg-1 [6]. This large gap demonstrates the necessity of more research on physics and chemistry of magnesium cell electrolysis."

The Bagdad district is 67 kilometers west of Prescott, Arizona, (Figure 1). The area north of the Old Dick and Bruce Mines was originally mapped by Anderson, Scholz and Strobell between 1943 and 1945, (1). The region is perhaps better known for the Bagdad porphyry copper deposit of tertiary age. However, 2 to 5 kilometers south of this deposit are several small massive sulfide occurrences in a eugeosynclinal Precambrian greenschist environment. More specifically, in. the Bridle formation of the Yavapai schist series. Three of these mines - Old Dick, Bruce and Copper Queen - were mined by Cyprus Mines Corporation between 1957 and 1977, and produced nearly 2mm tons of 3.6% copper and 12% zinc. These deposits occur at the interface between andesite and rhyolite and are stratiform in character. Certain structural and textural properties of the Bruce orebody suggest that remobilization of the massive sulfides occurred at some period during the metamorphic history of the area.

Coal/pyrite fines were froth floated in a laboratory cell to examine the rate of pyrite recovery during conventional coal flotation. The effects of collector, particle size and carbon to total sulfur ratio on the kinetics of recovery were investigated. These data coupled with microscopic examination suggest that miniscule amounts of coal that remain attached to the pyrite surface affect the rate of flotation of pyrite.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Co., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequence, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the ? dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. Wet beneficiation of iron ore fines less than 1 mm typically involves a desliming stage ahead of the fine gravity separation such as spirals. The desliming is achieved using a bank of cyclones. The reject ultra-fines emerge in the overflow stream at relatively low pulp density, contain high proportions of low-value slimes, but also well-liberated iron ore ultra-fines below 0.045 mm in size; however, recovering the valuable iron ore ultra-fines from this overflow stream presents a significant challenge due to the need to remove such a large amount of water and slimes.The REFLUX™ Graviton consists of distinct 3D-printed modular units, based on REFLUX™ Classifiers, which are rotated at high speed in a large centrifuge. This system has previously been investigated under semi-batch conditions, demonstrating the potential for precision separations with significant capacity. It has been shown that the throughput advantage of the inclined channels and G forces multiply. This is the first paper presented showing the performance of this system under continuous steady-state conditions. Ultra-fine silica in the size range of 0 to 0.045 mm was fed to the Graviton at different volumetric rates, fluidisation rates and pulp densities ranging from 2 wt per cent to 30 wt per cent, in order to develop a fundamental understanding of the system’s performance. The aim of this paper is to study the characteristics of limestone particles (size varies from 4 mm to 20 mm) during its transportation from open cast mines through pipes. The influence of four different size fractions of limestone samples (4–6 mm, 6–10 mm, 10–15 mm, and 15–20 mm) on pipe flow characteristics during vertical transport in a 100 mm NB hose pipe was investigated. The flow velocities in the vertically lifting pipe was varied from 0.95 m/s to 2.78 m/s and a rotary feeder of 2 to 4 tonne/hr. capacity was employed to feed the limestone samples to the lifting pipe. The pressure drop data for the different size fractions of limestone samples at different mixture velocities were analysed. The effect of input volume fraction and superficial velocity of limestone samples on hold-up ratio were discussed. It was indicated that there was no substantial increase in pressure drop of slurry samples in the studied range of concentrations (CW = 4.22% - 12.54%), particle size, and low to medium range mixture velocities with respect to water run head loss data. The hold-up for the larger size fractions (15–20 mm) of limestone samples was found to be significant as compared to smaller size fractions, which may be due to terminal settling velocities of individual fractions of the studied samples.

Shortly after the passage of the Taconite Amendment in Minnesota, several mining companies announced their intention to build new magnetite taconite plants and another announced its intention to augment present facilities. It is clear that Minnesota will enjoy an expanding magnetite taconite industry, but despite the fact that the reserves are large, eventually they will have to be supplemented by oxidized deposits. Furthermore, not all producers have magnetite taconite reserves. Due to the extensive oxidation of most of the western part of the Mesabi Range, there are no large blocks of unaltered magnetite taconite that lend themselves to open pit operations. Unless a commercial process can be developed to concentrate the oxidized, or so- called "nonmagnetic", taconite and semi-taconite, the existing mines operating in the western part of the range will be forced to shut down when the direct shipping, wash and gravity ores are depleted, or are no longer salable, because of their poor quality compared to high-grade pellets. KNOWN PROCESSES COSTLY The enormous reserves of the oxidized iron- bearing formation have offered a tantalizing challenge to metallurgists for many years. In fact, several processes for concentrating certain types of oxidized ore have been successful at both laboratory and pilot plant level, but to date no process for concentrating semitaconite or oxidized taconite has reached commercial fruition. Magnetic roasting, followed by low-intensity magnetic separation1, has shown considerable promise because the high iron recovery makes the ratio of concentration of many of the oxidized ores more favorable than that of magnetite taconite. However, the capital and operating costs are high and, in many cases, a high- grade concentrate cannot be made without resorting to flotation of the magnetic concentrate. Hence, most research groups are investigating alternate methods of concentration with the hopes of reducing the cost.

From a conszderation of the geometrically possible ways in which an array of lines or linear features in three-dimensional space can depart from a statistically random arrangement, a system was developed to describe and measure different types of anisotrypic arrangements of lines in opaque solids. The technique was applied to a specimen of unidirectionally solidified Al-Cwll, eutectic which contained microstructural imperfections termed lamellar faults. Experimental data obtained from photomicrographs of different facets of a grain of this alloy were then analyzed using this system. It was deduced that the defects, which are essentially linear in natuve, were predominantly parallel to one another but not parallel to the nominal growth direction probably because of some lateral heat flow during solidification. InGOTS of lamellar eutectic alloys which have been unidirectionally solidified under growth conditions which prevent colony formation consist of large elongated grains in which the lamellae are approximately parallel to one another. Deviations from a parallel lamellar structure within a grain are caused by extra lamellae which form occasionally during the solidification process. Three-dimensional analyses of such specimens have revealed that one extra platelet produces two defects, termed 1amellar faults, which can and do grow more or less independently of one another.' The faults are analogous in many ways to edge dislocations in crystals. If a lamella of one phase is considered to be basically two-dimensional, e.g., a surface, then a fault can be defined as the locus of points which delineates an edge (or half the periphery) of one extra lamella as it grows and forms bridges and saddles in an otherwise parallel arrangement oi lamellae, Fig. 1. Were it not for the fact that bridges and saddles occur in the structure, the extra platelet could be defined as the unit defect and the concept of linear faults of positive and negative character around the periphery of the extra platelet would be unnecessary. If an extra platelet is merely inserted (actually it is grown in) between other parallel platelets, the fault line around the periphery of the extra platelet would circumscribe one and only one platelet, namely the extra one, and the faults would lie in a plane parallel to the lamellae. But when an extra platelet merges with adjacent ones and each side grows independently of the other, it is no longer topologically possible to delineate "the extra plate." A fault circuit which either closes on itself or passes out of the specimen still occurs although it no longer will be coplanar with the lamellae. In fact, it is usually not even Planar even if the lamellae are. Under these conditions a concept that a specimen contains N extra platelets of a given size per unit volume would be very artificial and consequently meaningless. With the coming of the month of 'October the various sections are beginning active work for the winter. The Colorado, Washington, Montana, and New York Sections are all doing good work in raising funds for the hospital bed at Rheims which is to be a memorial to the members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the great war. We hope that all the other sections will begin to work with this object in view and will make even a better record than they did with the Belgian Relief Fund. It was with much regret that the President, Mrs. James F. Kemp, and the Secretary, Mrs. Sidney J. Jennings, were obliged to forego the pleasure of attending the Chicago meeting in September. They were, however, ably represented by Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight who gave an informal talk after which was formed the Illinois Section, which has our best wishes for all success-" Over the top and the best of luck!"

An accepted approach to open pit mining sequence planning is one of computer aided planning where: the planner works out his mining sequences by trial and error using interactive graphics; This approach gives results that could in- variably be improved given more time for the planning exercise. Increased emphasis on interactive planning reveals a need for simple formalized procedures for improving mining sequence planning practices. This paper discusses a case study in which Dynamic Programming (DP) is used in mining sequence planning. It is shown that DP can be applied to identify various intermediate, pit boundaries. These are then arranged in descending order of economic values and their material contents analysed with respect to tonnages, grades, production requirements, and equipment capacities. Those increments which best satisfy defined conditions are selected and the others discarded. The mining sequence is thus built up as a chain of best- economic valued mining increments satisfying given production requirements and constraints.

Bond's Standard Work Index (SWi) indicates the grindability of an ore, and his Operating Work Index (OWI) indicates the performance of a grinding mil or circuit. The comparison of the two indices offers a measure of the efficiency of the grinding operation. Mil (or circuit) performance, particularly on the Witwatersrand, is often indicated by the index kilowatt -hours per tonne of minus 75 µm material produced (kWh/t minus 75µm or OE75)' The paper shows that a standard kWh/t minus 75 µm index (SE75) can be obtained from the standard Bond grindability test (which provides the SWi), and asks whether the two E75 indices can be used in the various ways in which the two Work Indices are used. For the answer, the paper presents averaged values for the standard grindability indices of the gold ores of the Witwatersrand, averaged values for the performance of grinding mils operating on those ores, and the results of laboratory grinding tests on a composite of several Witwatersrand ores. The particle-size indicator for the calculation of the Wi indices, the am size, is constant in its relation to the largest particles present, whereas the percentage minus 75 µm, the indicator of size for the E75 index, varies with the degree of grinding in its relation to the size of the largest particles. Because of this difference, the standard Work Index increases as the grind becomes finer, whereas the standard kWh/t minus 75 µ value decreases. The Wi and E75 indices nevertheless serve similar purposes when applied to moderately fine grinding-finer than 70 per cent minus 75 µm. Open circuit laboratory grinding tests revealed three stages in the grinding process, and credible values for the open circuit Work Index were obtained only from the second stage. The conversion of the open circuit Work Indices to the equivalent of close circuit indices by the application of Bonds open circuit inefficiency factor (a constant for grinds indicated by the d80 size) was of limited success; however, the development of a conversion factor related to particle-size should not be difficult. Initially difficulty was experienced in the calculation of the 0E75 indices from the results of the laboratory tests, but it was eventually considered that a constant value of the index derived from the results would be close to the true open-circuit index. The open-circuit grinding test could there fore be a convenient method for the detection of differences in the grindability of ores.

Sampling has evolved at two large underground limestone mines as conditions and product requirements have grown tougher over 100 years of mine life, requiring innovative techniques to insure delivery of high purity limestone. Sampling insures delivery of consistent product to customers at the lowest possible cost. Statistical considerations have evolved from simple data collection to predictive and process capability analysis. Sample methods include borehole samples, face (using a proprietary face-sampling device), and total plant feed automatic, process, and final product sampling.
