"IntroductionThe Yellowknife greenstone belt lies along the west side of Yellowknife bay on the north shore of Great Slave lake, some 600 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The producing gold mines along the belt include the Con-Rycon and Negus which came into production in 1938 and 1939, and the Giant Yellowknife, which followed in 1948. In addition to these, the Akaitcho and Crestaurum mines are potential producers and there are several promising prospects.Early geological work along the belt was done by A. W. Jolliffe who first recognized a number of great faults, the largest of which is the West Bay fault with a horizontal movement of more than 3 miles. In 1943, A. S. Dadson, following an examination of the Giant-Yellowknife property, advanced the hypothesis that Baker Creek valley was underlain by a series of major gold-bearing shear zones. Subsequent diamond drilling in 1944 bore out the correctness of this view and outlined the great ore-bearing shear zones that are now being developed and mined by Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines. Near the south boundary of the Giant property, the shear zones are cut off by the West Bay fault. This prompted Neil Campbell, District Geologist for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, to make a detailed study of the geology along the West Bay fault in the hope of finding the faulted extension of the Giant shear-zone system on the west side of this fault. In this he was entirely successful. By careful geological mapping he matched several faulted diabase dykes on both sides of the fault and, knowing their dip, determined the horizontal and vertical components of movement along the fault. Subsequent •diamond drilling based on Campbell's work located the presumed correlative of the Giant shear-zone system on the Con-Rycon and Negus properties, where it has been named the Campbell zone or system. At the present time, all production at the Negus Mines property is coming from orebodies along the Campbell zone."

Static-Load Piledriving systems utilize hydraulic push to advance piles into the ground. Dynamic systems (ie. hammers and vibratory equipment) utilize impact, or vibration, to advance the piles. Static-Load systems are most commonly utilized in situations where noise or vibration would adversely affect the people, structures or equipment located near the site. Static-Load technology is most advantageous in situations where vibration, noise or access constraints make it difficult, risky or disruptive to utilize conventional piledriving systems.

On the basis of the brief introduction of the gold-antimony concentrate smelting process in China, some problems in the original process were analyzed and the corresponding improvements were introduced in this paper, such as the treatment of antimony matte, the refinement of gold-silver alloy, the concentrating gold from gold-antimony alloy, the treatment of soda slag. The roasting method that was used to treat the antimony matte was transferred to the ore dressing method. The solvent extraction was used to refine the gold-silver alloy instead of the electrolytic method. The technology of selective chlorination leaching under controlling potential was applied to concentrate gold from the gold-antimony alloy and gold-lead alloy instead of the electrolysis method. Soda slag was recovered by the second reducing smelting method substituting for the mixed-salt method of sodium arsenate. Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations were conducted on talc-bearing samples from Arkansas and Texas under the Bureau of Mines program of examinations and surveys, which is concerned, in part, with the improvement of conservation and utilization of domestic mineral resources. Two of the soapstones in question were successfully upgraded by flotation, utilizing stage additions of a frother and an amine to promote their talc content. The process could enable the producers to meet more rigid specifications of higher priced talc commodities. INTRODUCTION Talc is an industrial mineral with distinctive properties, such as softness, smoothness, large surface area in relation to mass, chemical inertness, and good retention as a filler, that make it particularly valuable to a number of industries. Sales to 6 industries -ceramics, paint, insecticide, rubber, roofing, and paper -consumed 84 percent of the domestic production of talc, pyrophyllite, and ground soapstone in 1952. In addition to the geologic risk of a particular project, the criteria that an international exploration company (æIECÆ) utilises when making an investment decision in a particular country should also include a critical analysis of the political, judicial and fiscal regime of the host country. A key investment criteria of an IEC is mineral tenure and the security and continuity of that mineral tenure under the host countryÆs existing legal system as well as the host countryÆs overall legal, political and fiscal framework, the latter of which can affect the projectÆs overall economic viability in a number of ways. The authors, Steve Vaughan and Michael Bourassa of Aird & Berlis, Toronto, Canada, have taken the position that developing an understanding of a countryÆs legal tradition is a crucial first step in analysing the mineral regulatory regime of a particular country. This paper continues their efforts to overview the most recent legal trends affecting the worldÆs mineral industry and attempts to analyse, categorise, compare and contrast differing legal systems, cultural backgrounds and economic philosophies relating to the development of mineral rights in Pacrim countries and the resulting commercial, legal, and political framework which ultimately drives the relevant mineral legislation. For the convenience of organisation of this analysis, the authors have divided the Pacrim countries into four smaller groups, firstly, on the basis of their legal tradition and, secondly, by their geographic location:Common Law Countries: USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; Spanish Civil Code Countries: Mexico, Central America (Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala), South America (Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia). Communist or Former Communist Countries: Mongolia, China, Russia. Countries of the Pacific Southwest: Phillippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indo-China (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand), Papua New Guinea. The discussion starts with an analysis of the various types of legal regimes, attempts to classify or categorise them, reiterates the necessity for the rule of law and those factors which encourage mineral exploration and development and discusses and recommends the expansion of a practical country competitiveness rating system developed by the Fraser Institute. In addition to the fundamental issue of mineral tenure û what it is and how secure it is û the paper discusses how different legal systems have shaped different approaches taken by individual nations to attract foreign mineral investment. The paper analyses the best practices and experiences accumulated in different Pacrim countries with varying legal traditions and identifies a practical country competitiveness rating system which the authors believe should be expanded to cover all minerally endowed countries. This rating system will permit countries to identify their mineral regime weaknesses and adjust their legal systems to better attract mineral investment and will also permit exploration and mining companies to compare their jurisdictional choices with those selected by their competitors.

At the MacIntyre Development of the Titanium Division of National Lead Company a magnetite-ilmenite ore together with gabbro-anorthosite waste is mined from an open pit by shovels and trucks. The ore from the pits is trucked to ore stockpiles for blending ahead of the crusher and to free the mine from crusher delivery schedules. The ore stockpiles are blended to yield a 16.5 to 17.0 % TiO, crusher feed. This requires mining on an assay cut-off rather than a visual grade cut-off. Highly mineralized ore runs from 20 plus % TiO2 and 30 plus % Fe to 15 % TiO2 and 40 plus % Fe as the ratio of ilmenite to magnetite changes. There are three major ore types in the present pit with magnetite ratios varying from about one to one up to three times as much magnetite as ilmenite. Ilmenite and magnetite together liberate from gangue down to about 10 mesh and this is the basis of the magnetic cobbing. Below 10 mesh the ilmenite and magnetite start to separate and ore cobbing pulleys will not hold the ilmenite.

For the extension of the Paper Mill of Parenco in Renkum, the Netherlands, the application of a pile foundation was required. The demands for this pile foundation were very explicit a vibration free and soil displacing pile systems with low allowable settlement. Another important aspect was the total amount of piles (originally over 1600 auger piles) which had to be executed within 3 months, in very difficult and unhomogeneous soil. Based upon these conditions the Tubex Grout Injection Pile was chosen to be used for this project. This system involves the drilling of a steel tube with a conical pile shoe while grout is injected at the point simultaneously, creating a mixed-in-place layer around the tube. INTRODUCTION After extensive marketing, the board of directors of Parenco, decided to a large extension of the production capacity of its paper mill by building a new production building called Paper Mill 1 or PM-1. The new PM-1 extension had to be constructed beside the existing PM-2 because of limited terrain. The site is located right between the Rhine river and Renkum, approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles) west from Arnhem (see figure 1). The construction involved the building of the PM-1 extension of approximately 250 meters (820 ft.) long by 40-60 metres wide (130-200 ft.). The main structure was to be constructed of precast concrete beams and columns.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.

The mechanism of hardening in heat-treatable zirconium alloys was foUNd to be analogous to that for titanium alloys. Zirconium containing a relatively large addition of a ß -stabilizing element such as molybdenum or columbium can be hardened by the following transformation: Lean alloys, having insufficient alloy content to retain ß at room temperature are hardened by the following transformation: Application of these findings in Zr-Mo-Sn and Zr-Nb-Sn alloys produced strengths as high as 190,000 psi with reasonable ductility. PRIOR research on zirconium alloys has been concerned with development of greater strengths and creep resistance by solid-solution hardening or by dispersion hardening. Although solution and aging heat treatments had been applied earlier to zirconium alloys, quenching frequently produced low ductility. The possibility that the ß-to-w transformation, discovered earlier in titanium alloys,' might also occur in zirconium alloys and cause low ductility was considered, and, indeed, was found as predicted2 to be the case. In the earliest experiments, the heat-treatment response of titanium, too, was disappointing. However, by avoiding the formation of the embrittling w phase, it became practical to obtain room-temperature strengths higher than 180,000 psi, with elongation values of 10 pct.3 Based on the present concept of titanium heat treatment, the principal requirement for a heat-treatable zirconium alloy is that it contains a certain minimum amount of one or more ß -stabilizing elements. Only molybdenum, columbium, and tantalum, when present in sufficient amounts, are known to stabilize ß zirconium to room temperature during rapid cooling from the ß field. Tantalum was undesirable because of its high thermal-neutron cross section. Aluminum and tin are effective a stabilizers, but aluminum has been shown to seriously decrease the corrosion resistance of simple zirconium alloys in hot water. Therefore, for the present study, tin was used as the stabilizer addition. The alloys selected for this evaluation are presented in Table 1 along with their analyses and ß-transus temperatures. Current metallurgical processes lack selective and efficient REE recovery from aqueous leach liquors. Antisolvent crystallisation is used to selectively recover pure inorganic salts from aqueous solutions without excessive chemical use in ambient conditions. Yttrium sulfate octahydrate (Y2(SO4)3.8H2O) was used as a representative rare earth salt to investigate the effect of antisolvent selection on the crystal morphology and size distribution of the final crystalline product produced through antisolvent crystallisation. The antisolvents of choice were short length alcohols that are water miscible i.e. methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and t-butanol. All experimental parameters except the type of antisolvent were kept constant under isothermal conditions. The large reduction in solubility of the salt by the antisolvent creates high supersaturations. This leads to high product yields as observed in this study at > 91%. In general, a variety of morphologies were successfully formed in each individual alcohol including; rods, plates, prismatic cubes and starburst clusters. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Y2(SO4)3.8H2O was the only species present for all final products. There was a change observed from the starburst and rod structures for the shorter alcohols towards prismatic cubes for the longer alcohols due to different strengths in the solute-antisolvent interaction at the crystal growth faces. The crystal sizes increased with an increase in the alcohol chain length because of the lower supersaturation conditions due to a limit in the mass transfer induced by the bulkier alcohol structure. In conclusion, it has been shown that the particle morphology and size can be greatly affected by the selection of antisolvent even under high supersaturation conditions, contributing to understanding the effect of different antisolvents on the final particle characteristics. The engineering of favoured product characteristics can therefore be achieved by antisolvent crystallisation, presenting a viable alternative process for the recovery of REE. In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a bituminous lump coal (minus 2 inch) in concentrations up to 48 weight-percent. An optimum concentration was found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipe-line, and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed.

Nature has furnished us with fuel in three forms, solid, liquid, and gaseous; solid, the most common; liquid, containing the greatest energy; gaseous, the most convenient for use. The tendency of the day is to the conversion of solid and liquid fuel into the gaseous form. There is magic in the word gas to many men who through ignorance or indifference imagine that by mere conversion into gas an immense quantity of energy can he added to fuel of other forms, forgetful of the law of nature, that. the conversion of any substance from one form to another involves a loss of effective energy, and therefore that if in certain cases more duty can be obtained out of the gas resulting from a given amount of coal than the coal itself will supply when used direct, the cause lies solely in the more efficient utilization of the fuel in its gaseous state. Nevertheless, new processes for making gas are constantly crowded upon our notice with claims of less cost for manufacture and delivery than natural gas, and often of far more energy for the product than is contained in the coal or oil from which it is made. I was recently asked to examine a new process of this kind. From an analysis shown me the calorific energy of the gas approximated 375 heat-units per cubic foot; on ascertaining the quantity of gas claimed to be made from a given amount of solid and liquid fuel, it appeared, that for every 325 heat-units contained in the latter 900 heat-units were alleged to he delivered into the gas, or nearly three times as much energy as the original fuel really held. The extravagant claim of some oil-gas advocates is still frequently heard, that by vaporizing oil with steam and then passing the mixture through a coil of hot iron pipe, an oil-water-gas containing 26,600 heat-units is formed from 1 pound of oil carrying originally 21,000 heat-units, while the only energy expended on the gas has been by the introduction of a -little steam and a little extraneous heat. When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. THERE are two conditions generally prevailing upon the earth-those within atmospheric influence, tending towards oxidation, and those away from atmospheric influence, tending towards reduction. Practically all mineral substances from mines of any depth are in a reducing condition. Since the cyanide process, in order to dissolve silver or gold, requires that the prevailing conditions under which it operates shall be oxidizing, and the materials usually acted upon being of a reducing character, it becomes necessary to supply oxygen to the solution carrying the cyanide. This oxygen is usually supplied through the medium of dissolved air in the solution, or through the medium of various chemical compounds, which upon combining with the solution or the ore give off a part of their oxygen. Strange as it may seem, practically all mineral substances are partly soluble in water, especially water carrying alkali or cyanide. The greater the surface exposed and the finer the material is ground, the greater will be the rate of dissolving of the reducing agents from the ore into the cyanide solution. In most cases, if the solution carrying the ore particles is agitated with air, the air will dissolve into the solution faster than will the reducing-agents; but in some cases the reducing-agents will dissolve more rapidly on account of easy solubility or greater surface exposed. It is a dissolving race between the oxygen from the air and the reducing-agents from the ore, and if the reducing-agents predominate, cyanide will not dissolve the gold from the ore. In many cases it will dissolve some of the gold, because in a mass of irregular shape some of the gold particles might be exposed upon the outside surface of a particle of rock;' but if the solution had to penetrate through cracks, the side-walls of which were lined with reducing-agent-

A physical modelling approach was adopted to simulate the process of cave mining propagation at various horizontal to vertical stress state ratios, and image data was captured and used to characterize the resulting failure mechanisms. Image processing was integrated into the study to determine minor principal strains in models to identify where critical extensional strains had been exceeded relative to crack propagation. The study exhibited a scale factor magnitude of 119 using a calculated critical extensional strain value of 0.014% for the modelling material used. It was perceived that cave propagation occurred through successive parallel extensional ‘fracture bands’ in all cases, as noticed in models of prior studies, deviating from that described by the Duplancic model. Cracks tended to bisect regions of minor principal strain equal to the critical extensional strain, which suggests ‘fracture banding’ is an acceptable failure mode for brittle, rock-like materials. Moreover, it was found that models with lower horizontal to vertical stress ratios (K ratios) showed a greater degree of vertical development of the caving mechanism (at similar vertical stresses), while the vertical extent of the cave was suppressed in models with higher K ratios. Models subjected to larger vertical stresses experienced slower cave formation in latter time-steps. These models exhibited larger two-dimensional caved perimeters and areas, respectively.

The solubilities of calcium sulfate in HCl-CaC1z-H20 solutions up to 100°C were successfully modelled with the aid of OLI software after bringing proper modification to it. Modelling, more specifically, was carried out with the help of the Environmental Simulation Program, V-6.6.0.4 (www.olisystems.com). New model parameters were obtained by regressing the solubility data. A private databank was established by adding the newly defined model parameters and the calcium sulfate hemihydrate phase that is not included in the original OLI database. The McGill-modified OLI software was successfully applied not only to modelling solubilities but also the transformation of the various CaS04 phases, namely dihydrate, hemihydrate and anhydrite. In this paper, the modelling methodology will be discussed along with a comparison of the capabilities of the newly developed model vs the original OLI model.

"CFM pneumatic flotation machines were developed by the Institute of Materials Science and Metallurgy, UrFU, and designed to concentrate a wide range of ores and man-made materials. A key principle of work is pulp preparation for flotation owing to its saturation with finely dispersed air bubbles in ejectors. CFM plants, their advantages over domestic and foreign prototypes are described. CFM pneumatic machine commercialization resulted in: - machines demonstrated high floatation efficiency for concentration of rebellious pyrrhotite-bearing copper and zink by simultaneous floatation of copper and zinc minerals and depressing pyrrhotite. CFM- 1400M introduction allowed simplifying and optimizing the flow chart and increase extraction of copper - by 5.4%, zinc - by 9.5% and improve the quality of copper (3% Cu) and zinc (1.5% Zn) concentrates. - due to copper pyrite concentration by using CFM 1400M overall copper recovery was increased by 1.5 %, and the content of copper in concentrates - by1%. According to the results of pilot runs, the use of CFM flotation for zinc cakes concentration strongly intensifies the process of cleaning water-soluble metal compounds and, thereby, increases the efficiency of flotation concentration and subsequent milling. CFM machines showed higher specific capacity (three or four times higher) (both for feed material and froth product).
