THE use of natural feldspathic rocks, as opposed to straight feldspar, for ceramic purposes is not new. "Cornwall stone," a semi-kaolinized granite containing fluorite, has long been used by the English pottery trade instead of feldspar, and "Carolina stone," a similar rock, is now being offered to the American trade. A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Mines states that trachyte, a glassy volcanic rock, is being used in California instead of feldspar in ceramic bodies. In Germany, phonolite and basalt have been investigated, and possibly also used, as ceramic raw materials, and extensive research has been conducted in Russia in recent years looking to the utilization of the immense bodies of nepheline syenite of the Kola Peninsula, which is the host rock of the apatite deposits now being exploited on a large scale in the Murmansk region; the nepheline is recovered as a by-product of the concentration of the apatite. Long used principally as a raw material for the pottery and allied industries, where, in bodies, glazes, enamels, etc., it serves as a fluxing ingredient and forms, on firing, a glassy bond with the more refractory clay, flint and coloring particles, feldspar has been finding ever increasing employment in glass. In 1936, over half of the nearly quarter of a million tons of feldspar sold in the United States went to the glass trade. Its usefulness for this purpose is due to the resistance to thermal shock which it imparts to glass products, particularly bottles, containers and tableware, because of its alumina content, which averages from 16 to 20 per cent. Active search has been made on the American continent during the past few years for other minerals of feldspathoid type, with comparable or higher alumina content, that may be suitable for glass and other ceramic purposes. One of the most important results of this work has been the delimiting in central Ontario of large bodies of nepheline syenite of excellent ceramic grade.

The presence of hydrogen sulphide in sewerage systems leads to severe concrete corrosion. Acid causes breakdown of the concrete matrix, and attacks reinforcement. Older sewer systems under acid attack are often found to be acutely corroded, sometimes after short operational periods. Consequently secondary liners are now almost always used. Polymer concrete is extremely acid resistant and if used in segmental linings can forgo the need for a secondary lining. Combined with fibers and/or GFRP rebar Polymer Concrete can produce a very strong acid resistant lining, saving considerable time in the installation of additional liners. This paper explains the problems and advantages of using Polymer concrete in segmentaly lined wastewater tunnels, addressing areas of design, cost, and programming.

Lack of skilled workforce in mining industry during the current decade has been a serious concern for most mining organization globally. At the beginning of this decade the major envisioned difficulty was related to generational breach of mining professionals. By 2003, mining industry recover from a low metal prices cycle following by a worldwide mining investment boom in 2005 that triggers a talent war among mining companies that was not only limited to professional level but skilled operators as well. Despite world?s economy collapse in October 2008, impact on mining industry was small comparing to other industries and appears to show evidence of healing. Under this context, fundamentals that have been driven lack of skilled workforce for the mining industry in previous years still valid. Starting in 2007, Minera Argentina Gold SA - Barrick Veladero, subsidiary of Barrick Gold, initiated an innovative selection and training program for candidates without exposure to mining. Following our corporate social responsibility mandates, Barrick Veladero decided to change its hiring process entirely, concentrating on selection and training of local people with no experience rather than hire experienced mining operators. This paper shares Barrick Veladero experiences on its hiring program, challenges faced, and current results.

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50 percent of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15-percent reduction in energy usage (kwh/t). These improvements have been made through optimization of grinding efficiency and use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory testwork and computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

"The vapor pressures of MS (PbS, SnS and Sb2S3) in the molten Cu2S-MS, FeS-MS pseudo-binary and Cu2S-FeS-MS ternary systems were measured by means of a transportation method in the temperature range of 1323 and 1423K to calculate MS activities in the sulfide melts. The activities of MS in these systems show negative deviation from ideal behavior except the FeS binary systems which exhibit nearly ideal behavior in the homogeneous melts. The activities of the Cu2S-FeS pseudobinary system, which is fundamentals of the copper matte, were estimated from the activity values in the ternary systems and exhibit negative deviation from ideality.The distribution behavior of tin between the ·matte and silica saturated fayalite slag was investigated under the controlled partial pressures of S02 at l 523K. It was found that, in general, tin is distributed in the both phase, while tin is concentrated to the slag phase with increasing copper content in the matte. The activity coefficient of SnO in the slag was calculated based on the distribution ratio combined with the activity coefficient in the Cu2S-FeS system.IntroductionThe thermodynamic properties related to the Cu2S-FeS system and the Cu2S-FeS-MS systems (where MS can be PbS, SnS, Sb2S3, As2S3, Bi2S3, etc.) is required to be better understanding of the copper smelting process. However, thermodynamic analysis such as the distribution of impurities among the gas, slag and matte phases is difficult due to lack of thermodynamic data. In this study, the vapor pressures of MS (PbS, SnS and Sb2S3) in the Cu2S-MS, FeS-MS. and Cu2S-FeS-MS systems were measured by a transportation method. The distribution behavior of tin between the matte and silica saturated fayalite slag was also investigated. The results in the present experiments are useful to analyze thermodynamically the behavior of component in the copper matte smelting."

Vasos metalúrgicos podem ser revestidos com linhas de tijolos refratários, com ou sem argamassa. Devido ao grande número de interfaces entre os tijolos, o sub-sistema tijolo/junta impõe dificuldades computacionais ao projeto da montagem. Buscando comparar a influência do projeto refratário nas tensões presentes na estrutura, um revestimento com juntas secas foi modelado utilizando um material homogêneo equivalente. As propriedades termo-mecânicas deste material equivalente foram determinadas usando o método de Homogeneização Periódica e dependem tanto da temperatura quanto do estado da junta (aberta ou fechada, nas duas direções). Este modelo foi usado para simular uma Panela de Aço através do Método dos Elementos Finitos (MEF) com o intuito de demonstrar a influência dos seguintes parâmetros: presença ou ausência de juntas; espessura da junta e projeto refratário. O trabalho pretende auxiliar o desenvolvimento de projetos refratários e fornecer melhores estimativas da aplicabilidade de uma dada configuração.

The desulfurization process by powder injection and blowing in the RH refining of molten steel and its mechanism have been considered and analyzed. Based on the two-resistance mass transfer theory and the mass balance of sulfur in the system, a kinetic model for the process has been developed. The related parameters of the model, including the mass transfer coefficients and the effective amount of powder in the molten steel being treated for desulfurization, have been more reasonably determined. Modeling and predictions of the process of injecting and blowing the lime-based powder flux under assumed operating modes with the different initial contents of sulfur and amounts of powder injected and blown in a RH degasser of 300 t capacity have been carried out using the model. The relevant circulation rate of the liquid steel and the powder injection and blowing rate were taken to be 100 t/min and 150 kg/min, respectively. The initial contents of sulfur in the liquid steel to be treated and the amounts of powder injection and blowing were respectively assumed to be 0.007, 0.006, 0.005, 0.004, 0.003, 0.002 mass-% and 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3 kg/t-steel. The total treatment time for desulfurization under each mode was set up at 24 min, equivalent to eight circulation cycles of the liquid steel to be treated. The results indicated that the predictions made with this model are in good agreement with some data of the industrial experiments and practice. Injecting and blowing the lime-based powder flux with the composition of 85 mass-% lime (CaO) + 15 mass-% fluorspar (CaF2) of 3-5 kg/t-steel, it is possible to decrease the sulfur content in the molten steel to ultralow level below (5-10)x10·4 mass-% from (60-80)x 10·4 mass-%. The total treatment time needed will appropriately be 12-20 min. Intensifying the powder injection and blowing operation and increasing the circulation rate of the liquid steel may effectively' raise the rate of the process in RH refining. The model may be expected to offer some useful information and a reliable basis for determining the reasonable process parameters and help in optimizing the technology of desulfurization by powder injection and blowing in the RH refining of molten steel.

In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.

The aims of this paper are to present the governing science, verify the performance and demonstrate the potential engineering applications of a computational simulator for in situ leach mining of non-ferrous minerals. Assuming that the target mineral is deposited either uniformly within rock matrixes (matrix-hosted) or on fracture walls (fracture-hosted), in situ leaching can be treated as reactive flow and transport in geological media (porous media for matrix-hosted ore deposits and fractured media for fracture-hosted ore deposits). Under this treatment, the processes of in situ leach mining for non-ferrous minerals can be quantified through several sets of equations and these coupled equations have been numerically solved. The computational simulator has been applied to the simulations of one-, two-, and three-dimensional in situ leaching cases. The computational simulator, together with laboratory and in situ leaching tests, can be used to:optimise the leaching chemistry; optimise the in situ scale mining operations; scale up the in situ scale test operation to a full-scale mining operation; and evaluate the post-mining environmental restoration plan.

This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The metallurgical treatment of mercury-containing materials for precious or base metals recovery imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Mercury is usually present as elemental or cinnabar. Historically, mercury has been removed from mined ores pyrometallurgically by roasting, but hydrometallurgical methods have also been employed. For example, alkaline sodium sulfide solution acts as an universal solvent for most mercury compounds. While, most other metals are highly insoluble in this solution. This allows for a high degree of selective separation of mercury from other metals with the exception of tin, antimony and arsenic. Mercury leached with a solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide or sulfur can be re-covered by cementation or stabilized through sulfide precipitation. Hydrometallurgical technology for the pretreatment of mercury removal from gold, silver, and base metal ores using alkaline sulfide leaching will be discussed with a focus on alkaline sulfide leaching of mercury sulfide-containing materials.

This paper discusses the materials handling problems encountered in cement plants in the areas of raw and finished product grinding and cement storage. It illustrates by examples taken from actual installations, how optimum feed rate is maintained in grinding circuits with properly applied bin dischargers (vibrating hoppers, Mexican feed boxes and aerated bin bottoms) for materials with high moisture content and/or difficult handling characteristics. Initial operating problems with the equipment will be discussed and maintenance requirements will be indicated for comparison purposes. In a modern cement plant, properly functioning bins and feeders are as essential as process control, for no process control system, however sophisticated, can perform efficiently if raw materials do not flow into the plant processing facilities at the required time and rate. Most materials used in the manufacture of portland cement - such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone, gypsum, clinker or cement itself-have difficult handling characteristics under specific conditions. High moisture content or even dampness due to condensation may create bin hang-ups, arching and ratholing, all of which result in improper functioning of the feeders or proportioning equipment. The occurrence of these problems in existing cement plants spurred a search for the corrective devices discussed in this article. The equipment investigated included bin dischargers in the form of vibrating hoppers for moist raw materials, Mexican feed boxes for clinker and aerated bin bottoms for cement. Operating experience with different types of bin dischargers showed that the actual performance of some did not come up to the expected level under prevailing operating conditions. The aim of this paper is to record the results of this experience and there- by aid designers and/or operators in selecting the most suitable equipment for their requirements. BIN DISCHARGERS (GENERAL) A discharger is a device that causes stored solids to flow out of a hopper without metering the rate of flow as a feeder does. The investigation discussed here encompasses the following types of bin dischargers used in a cement plant: (1) vibrating hoppers (horizontal motion), (2) whirlpool hoppers (horizontal and vertical motion), (3) aerated bin bottoms (air fluidization), and (4) Mexican feed boxes. Most of the bins used in the cement industry are of the plug flow type. Raw materials with difficult handling characteristics such as high moisture content may cause flow problems when fed through small openings (12 x 18 in.), even if two walls of the bin are vertical.' The most appropriate solution to these flow problems would be the installation of separate mass flow bins for the different materials such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone and gypsum, with each bin correctly designed from test data obtained by measuring the flow properties of representative samples. However, limited storage capacity and plant space usually preclude this approach. Quantitative design of bins for flow based on measured flow properties of representative samples of the bulk solid to be handled is no longer an "engineering art," thanks to the basic research done on the flow of bulk solids in bins during the last decade.2, Where space limitations exist, however, or where improvements are being sought for equipment already installed, bin dischargers offer a satisfactory solution to flow problems. They can be applied effectively under flat-bottom bins or mounted to existing plug-flow bins with very little modification to these facilities. In both the foregoing cases, plug flow will be maintained, but the flow channel will be considerably increased so that it is larger than the discharger's bin-side diameter, and material flow can be sustained if the discharger is correctly selected. The main purpose of a bin discharger is to draw the bulk solids across the whole area of the bin outlet, to make the opening fully effective. DEEP DRY SOIL MIXING FOR SOIL IMPROVEMENT OF RAILWAY TRACKS IN VERY SOFT SOILS1.1 IntroductionRailway tracks are set into vibrations by train passing. In very soft soil this leads to long-term deformations which lead to speed limits, temporary closings and big maintenance efforts. The energy of the dynamic loading is transmitted into the soil by compression and shear waves and at the surface by rayleigh waves (Wood 1968). The expansion of the waves are influenced by•,thickness of the soft soil layer•,density of the soft soil layer•,stiffness of the soft soil layer•,saturation of the soft soil layer•,frequency of the dynamic loadingThe frequency of the dynamic loading depends on the train velocity and the distance of the wheels and wheel sets. If the frequency of the dynamic loading is in the range of the natural frequency of the soft soil layer the vibrations increase extremely (Lieberenz et al. 2003). As a result the long-term deformations will increase as well.To avoid these long-term deformations and the resulting operation restrictions and maintenance efforts an adequate soil improvement is necessary. Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. The operation and performance of these filters is discussed and compared to the lab testing used to size the full-scale equipment.CITATION:Pepper, D, 2012. PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

During the last decade it has been established that conventional flotation control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in grade, recovery, and operating-cost savings. In the current report a description of an advanced model-based control philosophy is presented. The derivation and verification of a simplified flotation model is described. The implementation of a Kalman filter for estimation of unmeasured variables for input to controllers is discussed. Several control strategies using the model-based approach are described, emphasizing the nonlinear nature of the flotation plant. Expected trends in the implementation of such model-based flotation control strategies in the future are discussed.
