The surface tension from 240° to 844° C and the density from 236° to 583° C of 99.999 percent purity liquid tin has been measured using the maximum-bubble-pressure method. Results for surface tension (y) show y (dynes/em) = 566.84 -4.76 X 10-2 T (° C) with a standard error of 1.9 dynes/cm. Results for density (p) show p (g/cm3) = 7.16 -6.3 X 10-4 T (° C) with a standard error of 0.012 g/cm3. Comparisons with other data found in the literature are discussed. The experimental results are considered to be as good as any data presently available.

Computer software is an integral part of mining operations today with many sites using six or more software packages on a daily basis. However, the use of these different programs generates the need for substantial staff training. The current trend toward large integrated packages to solve this problem is counter-productive because the relatively small companies producing specialised mining software do not have the resources to develop quality software with all the required features. Software standards are being proposed by various parties but recent history indicates these will be unsuccessful. An alternative approach is suggested using the various standards which have been developed for the Windows operating system.

The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. Manitoba has now joined Ontario and Quebec in providing for new incentives and lower tax rates for the mining industry. A single rate of tax (to replace the former two-tier royalty), an investment tax credit and a relatively straightforward set of rules for calculating taxable mining profits are the main features of new mining tax legislation announced by Manitoba's Finance Minister Donald W. Craik in his May 15, 1979 budget address. On introducing amendments to reform The Metallic Minerals Royalty Act, the Finance Minister indicated that the new tax regime is intended to restore the Manitoba mining tax system to a competitive position in Canada, and should result in renewed investment in the province's mining industry. 1n this regard, the government could be right-there is little question that the new tax regime will produce greater incentives for the mining industry than the two-tier royalty system introduced by the New Democratic government in 1975. The proposed changes, contained in Bill 57, would largely be effective January I. 1979.

"The recovery of lead from battery paste has been investigated for a long time and with the use of many different electrolytes. A number of processes have been presented, but none of them reached even the demonstration step. Engitec has developed a new concept for the battery paste electrowinning using a chloride electrolyte fed through a very innovative flow cell. The process has passed the lab and the demo scale and it is ready to be introduced on the market. In this paper, a description of the process will be provided.INTRODUCTIONThe need for improved energy storage systems as well as the introduction of commercially viable electric vehicles is providing a strong compulsion toward the research of new batteries. The lead battery is playing an important role because it is inexpensive, reliable and it is the most recycled material. This last aspect marks the lead acid battery as quite peculiar making it both the primary lead based product and the main raw material for lead production.In the last years the legislative pressure has become very strong and has forced the lead production to react through the introduction of important process innovations and market changes. The dispersive products, such as additives for paints and for fuel as well as bullets, have been practically banned all over the world while the battery market continues to grow. The lead acid battery remains the cheapest and most integrated energy storage system available and is improving to meet the new technical challenges. This is testified by the news coming from the development of new and more efficient lead acid batteries which are confirming their leading position.Unfortunately, the image of lead is very negative in the public opinion and some important actions are required to try changing this sentiment. Among them, better information to the market and users and the introduction of new and cleaner technologies in the production of lead can help."

In the exploration of a copper deposit by drilling, obvious advantages are to be gained from a distinction between primary and secondary ore.' Perhaps the chief of these is the aid which such a distinction renders in determining where a given hole should stop. The copper assay, often a sufficient guide, cannot always be exclusively relied upon. Primary ores may extend downward indefinitely and may fluctuate in value independently of depth: if primary ores are consistently lean for a considerable vertical distance, there is little reason to expect that, still deeper, they will increase to the commercial grade; on the other hand, rich primary ores may persist uninterruptedly downward or may come in again below a lean interval. Secondary ores, however, have a comparatively limited vertical extent; in a large way enrichment decreases with depth and finally gives out. It follows then, that when a hole descends from profitable ore into ore of less than the commercial minimum, the practical significance of the situation depends upon whether this decrease results from a decrease in secondary enrichment or is a variation in primary content: if the copper of the ore passed through has been chiefly secondary, little is gained in the average case by extending the hole much below the point at which the commercial limit is reached; but, when copper is chiefly primary, due weight must be given to the possibility that, still deeper, the ore may again improve. ENGINEERS have long recognized the desirability of correlating the data obtained from small-scale slime-settling tests with commercial work as carried on in large tanks. This need, though most apparent in designing new installations, frequently arises also in existent plants, since a large range of experimental work can be performed without interfering with regular operation. GENERAL SETTLING PHENOMENA In order to develop rational methods of laboratory testing, it becomes necessary to study the general phenomena of settling. Since it was desired to give the public the benefit of these methods at as early a date as possible, together with the knowledge of the general principles of slime settling necessary for a clear understanding of the laboratory tests, we have ventured to discuss the subject in so far as brought out by the work which we now have under way. We realize that certain of our preliminary conclusions may be subject to modification, but it seems probable that, with but few exceptions, the general laws enunciated will cover the settling behavior of all pulps encountered in metallurgical plants. However, it must be recognized that there is still a vast amount of work to be done upon certain phases of the subject; therefore, at this time we will attempt only a discussion of the behavior of ore pulps during the process of settling or dewatering, under certain given conditions. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. INFACON is of special significance to people in South Africa who are interested in ferro-alloys, because it was in South Africa that the idea of regular international congresses on ferro-alloys was conceived and developed. INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. Advance knowledge of roof conditions can lead to improvement in roof control strategies that will reduce roof falls and ultimately will reduce injuries to mine workers. J.H. Fletcher and Company, in cooperation with West Virginia University, has been developing a system to meet these needs by collecting torque, thrust, and rotation speed data during drilling operations. Recent improvements in analysis algorithms to detect anomalies in the roof structure as well as various display enhancements for real time mapping and evaluation of roof structures have been incorporated into current Fletcher Information Display system. The unit has also been housed in an explosion-proof container to allow use in coal mine applications. Recently, the system has undergone extensive field trials in several limestone mines and one coal mine. During these trials, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health assisted Fletcher in verifying the accuracy of the roof mapping capability of the system by comparing the display information to bore hole scoping observations and drill corings. It was concluded from this assessment that the intelligent drilling system can complement scoping and core analysis to provide a more complete picture of roof strata and is capable of seeing features or conditions that are not always obvious in these more traditional methods.

"Conventional base metal milling practice normally consists of crushing, grinding and cyclone classification followed by flotation. It is the authors' belief that the commencement of flotation after cyclone classification leads to inferior metallurgical results and that implementation of flotation of grinding mill discharges can result in increased recovery due to reduced overgrinding, reduced activation of contaminating minerals and improved dewatering circuit results due to the production of coarser concentrates.The concept of recovering minerals from the discharge of grinding mills is not new! Gold concentrators have utilized jigs and flotation cells while iron ore plants have employed magnetic separators to recover gold and magnetite respectively from the discharge of grinding mills. More recently, a Reichert cone has been used to recover sulphide and oxide base metal minerals from screened rod mill discharge. 1To the authors' knowledge, the first application of flotation of base metal minerals from the discharge of a production plant grinding mill was at the Lake Dufault concentrator of Corpor'1tion Falcon bridge Copper. Located 10 miles north of Noranda, Quebec the Lake Dufault concentrator commenced operations in August, 1964.The installation of flot11tion cells in the Lake Dufault grinding circuit proved so successful that an identical system was installed in the Manibridge concentrator of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Located 90 miles southwest of Thompson, Manitoba the Mamibridge concentrator commenced operations in June, 1971 and due to exhaustion of economic ore reserves discontinued production in May 1977."

"The current research study addresses a physical separation process of basic oxygen furnace slag “BOF-Slag” (also called Linz-Donawitz “LD” slag) for the removal of phosphorous. In order to recycle the LD-Slag into the steelmaking process, the physical dephosphorization methods are considered. The systematic geometallurgical investigation carried out on particle classes of decreasing size, which were further subdivided into susceptibility classes, shows intimate intergrowth beyond 40 µm due to slag´s fast cooling rate. Generally, LD-slag is constituted of oxide and silicate phases, among which di-calcium silicate “C2S” dominates. About 0.5 mass% of phosphorous was detected in the LD- slag, which is exclusively situated in the lattice of the C2S. The comparatively high grinding resistance (Rittinger index 12.9 cm²/J) of the LD-slag reflects the energy demand to liberate the phosphorous carrying phase from the iron containing minerals, while separation efficiency decreases in the very fine particle size range. Hence, the conversion of the phase intergrowth pattern was considered alternatively to re-build the mineral phase structure of the material to a separable interlock pattern. Carbon dioxide, as the most convenient substance in the steelmaking plants, was applied to digest the C2S in the presence of water and to reduce the basicity of the slag slurry. As a result of C2S-CO2 chemical reaction, calcite and calcium silicate are precipitated at the surface of the oxide particles and carried between 25% and 75% of the total phosphorous, respectively. Accordingly, the mobility of the phosphorous content phase to the top of the grains serves the possibility to separate the precipitated layer by mechanical attrition process. This paper is focused on the impact of the intergrowth pattern alteration on the slag´s separability characteristics. Moreover, the operating conditions of the carbonization process, such as temperature and pressure, on the deconstruction kinetics of the C2S and the generated products will be considered. INTRODUCTION The steelmaking BOF-Slag is a stony aggregate waste from the steel manufacturing process. The investigated slag by the current research work was provided by voestalpine steelmaking plant in Linz, Austria. The current legislative situation in Austria restricts the historical application of slag as construction material, due to the high level of heavy metals content and corresponded land-filling and transportation costs of slag, therefore the demand for recycling of BOF-Slag to the steelmaking process has raised, as an alternative application. Statistically, voestalpine steelmaking plant produces about 130 kg BOF-Slag per ton of final steel product, which serves annual BOF-Slag production of 700,000 ton, approximately."

Just prior to the close of the century, the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission issued its long-awaited decision in Berwind Natural Resources, et al v. Secretary of Labor, to usher in the new millennium. The case arose as a result of a mine explosion in Eastern Kentucky resulting in MSHA’s issuance of 225 citations, not only to the contractor, but to four affiliated entities of Berwind Corporation. While an Administrative Law Judge dismissed those citations as to three of the Berwind entities, both MSHA and the remaining Berwind entity appealed the case to the Commission. Although the Commission effectively left intact the Administrative Law Judge’s decision, it announced a new theory of liability that would apparently be applied in the future, namely the Unitary Operator Theory. This presentation will provide an in-depth look into the Berwind decision and explore the means under which MSHA might impose liability for contractor violations upon other entities in the future.

When a metal or alloy is poured into a mold, internal stresses are set up by the cont,raction in volume on passing from the liquid state at the temperature of pouring to the solid state at the ordinary temperature. It is assumed by the writers that all castings are internally stressed. That any casting is internally stressed is shown by its warping or distortion on maturing at the ordinary temperature, by warping or cracking on heating, or by cracking or distortion on machining. In the investigation made by the writers, the internal stresses in cast non-ferrous alloys were studied with a view to examining the effects of heat treatment (i.e., simple anneal) on the release of such stresses. Data have been obtained that show quantitatively that internal stresses can be removed by appropriate heat treatment. The investigation was limited to a study of the effect of heat treatment on stress release in cast rings of the 87:7:5:1 copper-tin-zinc-lead alloy. The writers are indebted to E. G. Fahlman for the method used for inducing stress in cast rings; to M. E. Boyd for microscopic examination and for other aid; and to G. B. Dalrymple for the chemical analyses. "Quantitative evaluation of secondary support performance in longwall tailgates in U.S. coal mines was introduced with the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Wood Crib Performance Model. This model evaluated crib performance based on load capacity, stability, and convergence characteristics. The introduction of a large variety of alternative secondary supports in the 1990s prompted a full-scale load-displacement testing program conducted by the USBM and, subsequently, NIOSH. The application of the ground response curve concept to secondary supports provided a more complete estimation of secondary support loading in longwall abutment zones. Secondary support loading from floor heave, horizontal stress effects, and pillar yield are captured by the ground response curve. A point on the ground response curve can be measured by instrumenting a secondary support with load and convergence measurement devices. A segment of the ground response curve can be measured by instrumenting two secondary support types of varying stiffness. Numerical models have been used to construct complete ground response curves for longwall tailgates based on measured secondary support performance. The ground response curve concept can be used as a design methodology for secondary supports in the #2 entry, as well as the longwall tailgate. Extending published evaluation and design methodologies for secondary support in longwall tailgates, a ground response curve unique to the loading conditions and required functionality of the #2 entry can be developed. Numerical models can be used to construct full ground response curves based on measured data in the #2 entry.INTRODUCTIONA longwall ventilation system is designed to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures and other contaminants from the active face, to bleeder systems, and out of the mine. The #2 entry of the tailgate gateroad serves to transport contaminated air from the longwall face to the bleeder system. The #2 entry is required to function as an air course between two longwall gobs and is subject to significant ground movement and loading. Current ground support design and evaluation practices are based on empirical evidence and little to no quantitative data on support performance exists for these entries. Substantial volumes of research have been conducted on ground movement and support performance in longwall tailgate entries. Following the successful ground support evaluation and design practices established for longwall tailgate entries, a practical and efficient design methodology can be adapted for supporting the #2 entry of a three-entry gateroad system."

We certainly have the data to back calculate it. I must admit that I haven't, at the moment my priority is not on what is the stiffness of the jet grout but is making sure that the jet grout is really there. It's a bit like what Stuart Littlejohn was talking about this morning in terms of grouting on the dams a small window causes a big problem so it's having the jet grouting there at all, at the moment must have been my focus rather than just what is the stiffness once you've got it there.

Brunswick Mine is one of the largest underground zinc/lead mines in Canada, producing 3.4 million tones of ore annually. As mining activities advance to deeper levels, ground pressure also becomes greater. To cope with the highly stressed ground, the mine has taken some strategic measures to ensure the targeted production level. Such measures include the implementation of a pastefill system and transferring the mining method from primary/secondary stoping to pillarless pyramid stoping. With the pillarless mining method, stope sizes become smaller and the number of active stopes is also less than before. In addition, mining sequence and cycle time have to be strictly followed according to production schedule. The blasting project described in this paper tackles one of the steps in the mining cycle aimed at shortening the blasting cycle time in a stope. Furthermore, this project was conducted and managed with the Six Sigma initiative in Noranda which was implemented in the fall of 1999. Like a typical process review, the blasting operation was examined by breaking it down into many steps that can be quantified and measured. Each activity was then correlated with different factors associated with blast design as well as blast operations underground. It was found that the utilisation of voids plays a key role in the blasting cycle time. With improved void utilisation ratio, blasting cycle time has been reduced from an average of 12 shifts to ten shifts per stope. This improvement translates into approximately 180 000 tonnes of ore being blasted without any increase in manpower. This paper presents the technical aspects of the study, as well as some operational issues and improvements made during the project.
