A new electric logging method, called displacement logging, often gives a direct indication of the presence of mobile hydrocarbons in hydrocarbon-bearing formations. This method is based on the detection of a bank of connate water which is formed between the invading mud filtrate and virgin formation fluids in these cases. The existence of this phenomenon has beer, verified by laboratory studies and by actual field logs taken in known oil sands. INTRODUCTION During the past decade increasing use has been made of conventional electric logs to determine the amount of oil or gas in formations traversed by a borehole. This determination requires knowledge of several factors, such as true resistivity of the formation, formation factor, and water resistivity. Sometimes all of the factors necessary to make a reliable saturation calculation are not available. Also, the computations and corrections which are necessary in such a study often require the services of an experienced log analyst. It has long been the desire of exploration people to have a logging device which will locate hydrocarbon-bearing formations directly without requiring complex interpretation methods. The displacement log, while not completely fulfilling this desire, appears to be a Step in that direction. Basis for the Device The basis for this device stems from a phenomenon which occurs when mud filtrate invades a formation which contains displaceable hydrocarbons. As the mud filtrate invades the formation, most of the oil or gas is pushed out of the invaded zone, leaving residual oil. However, in addition to displacing most of the oil or gas, the connate water is also swept out, since the originally irreducible water is mobile in the presence of a water phase.1,2,3 Tonsequently, this irreducible water piles up as a bank between the virgin oil zone and the invading filtrate. If the mud filtrate is of higher resistivity than the formation water— as is commonly the case—the resulting annular zone, containing the bank of formation water, will be of lower resistivity than either the virgin oil-bearing formation resistivity or the invaded zone resistivity. This resistivity configuration, going from high to low to high again as the distance from the borehole increases, is found only in those zones which contain displaceable hydrocarbons. A device which would reliably detect this low resistivity zone would give a direct indication of mobile hydrocarbons. Illustrations This phenomenon is illustrated in Fig. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 shows a sketch of a zone containing salty connate water plus displaceable hydrocarbons, along with graphs showing fluid content and electrical resistivity vs distance from the borehole, before invasion occurs. Fig. 2 shows this zone, together with fluid content and resistivity graphs. after invasion by a fresh water mud. The resistivity pattern on moving away from the borehole is high: low: high. The absence of the low zone phenomenon in water zones is illustrated in Fig. 3 and 4. Fig. 3 shows a sketch of a zone containing salty formation water and residual oil, along with graphs showing fluid content and electrical resistivity vs distance from the borehole, before invasion occurs. Fig. 4 shows this water zone, together with fluid content and resistivity graphs, after invasion bv a fresh water mud. Feldspar is the earth's most abundant mineral group. The feldspars are aluminum silicate minerals belonging to the tectosilicate class. Feldspars are the most widespread of any mineral group and are estimated to constitute 60% of the earth's crust. They make up a large percentage of the exposed rocks as well as soils, clays, and other unconsolidated sediments. Feldspars are widely used in the glass and ceramic industry and are principal components in rock classification schemes. Feldspar minerals and their production are important contributors to the domestic and world economies and standard of living. In 1990, the United States produced 630 kt of feldspar minerals, and world production was estimated to be more than 5 Mt. Feldspar mineral production in the United States has a long and interesting history (Feitler, 1967, Rogers Jr. et al., 1983). The first commercial production in the United States occurred in about 1825 and came from pegmatite bodies located in Connecticut, where feldspar was mined, hand sorted, and shipped to England. Feldspar production grew during the 19th and 20th centuries with important developments in production location, integrated mine and processing facilities, and the development of the flotation process for feldspar by the US Bureau of Mines and the feldspar industry. The first commercial feldspar flotation plant began operations-in Kona, NC, in 1946, some six years after this process had been developed. In 1990, the domestic feldspar industry consisted of 12 operating companies with mines and processing plants located throughout the United States (see Table 1). During the last 25 years, the domestic feldspar industry has been dynamic, marked by new plant construction and capacity expansion at older plants. The industry has also seen plant closures, changes in ownership of existing operations, the consolidation of the Canadian nepheline syenite industry, and the increase of imported feldspar products. The industry has been affected by contractions in its major end-use markets brought about by economic cycles, product substitution, and environmental effects, such as recycling, land-use controversy, and air and water pollution. Despite problems, the industry remains mature and highly competitive. GEOLOGY Mineralogy The common feldspar group of minerals form a single crystalline phase or solid solution series of minerals. Fig. 1 is a ternary phase diagram that shows the feldspar mineralogy-KAlSi,O8, NaAlSi3O8, and CaAl2Si2O8. The end-member compositions are also referred to as potassium, sodium, and calcium feldspar. The feldspars whose chemistry ranges between the potassium and sodium end-members are known as alkali feldspars, while those between the sodium and calcium end-members are plagioclase feldspars. These feldspar groups can be further subdivided based on structural and compositional features within the alkali or plagioclase feldspar series. The distinction between and the proportion of members of the two feldspar groups are important to the classification of igneous rocks (Deer et al., 1966). Perthites are the exsolution product of an initially homogeneous potassium-sodium feldspar solid solution which forms (in an environment of decreasing temperature) a heterogeneous intergrowth of sodium-rich feldspar lamellae in a host crystal of potassium feldspar. Antiperthites are exsolution products in which the host mineral is sodium-rich plagioclase feldspar and the intergrowths are potassium-rich feldspar.

The structure of wrought iron as usually described by metallographists and workers in metal in general is that of a fairly pure iron. Impurities, if present, are usually considered as being in solid solution in the crystals of the ferrite matrix or as forming part of the ever present "slag streaks." Attention is herein directed to one type of these dissolved impurities; to the detection of such impurities, particularly in low-grade irons, and to their possible influence on the physical properties of the metal. The attention of the Bureau of Standards was first directed to wrought iron of the peculiar and unusual characteristics to be described later, in material which had failed in service and was submitted for test. The examination was extended to other grades of wrought iron, to see whether such features are of common occurrence in this class of material. MICROSTRUCTURE OF WROUGHT IRON Usual Structure The general microstructure of wrought iron is so well known that a detailed description of it here is needless. There is shown in Fig. 2 the structure of a sample of Swedish iron which illustrates well the matrix of ferrite crystals in which are embedded the slag threads so characteristic of the puddling process and the subsequent working of the material. The usual commercial product contains varying amounts of the impurities commonly associated with iron and steel, i,e,, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, and sulphur together with small amounts of carbon. Of these, the larger part of the phosphorus and some of the silicon present are held in solid solution in the ferrite while most of the remaining impurities, other than carbon, exist in the in closures of slag. Aside from the discontinuities introduced by the slag streaks the ferrite matrix has the microstructure and appearance of a pure metal. No definite orientation of the various crystals or grains is apparent; deep etching of the specimens reveals no intracrystalline features (i.e., within the grains) other than those noted in " pure " metals in general (etching pits).

"Based on the geological conditions of the No. 10203 mining face of the Xinyang coal mine, a numerical model of the longwall backfilling face is built using the FLAC3D software to calculate the limit broken length of the key strata. Based on the deformation laws of the immediate roof, the backfilling parameters are determined. Furthermore, the movement laws of the overburden strata with different volume filling rates (0, 40, 60, 100, and 100%) and with different layout forms of the filling strip (under a volume filling rate of 60%) are analyzed. The results of the numerical modeling show that the stress of the two sides of the working face and the deformation of the overlying rock are gradually reduced with the increment of the volume filling ratio. In view of the deformation of the roof strata within the allowable range, a volume filling rate of 60% is selected to simulate and analyze the filling effect under different layout forms of the filling strip. The filling width, stress concentration area, and layout form of the filling strip are the key factors to control the movement of the overlying strata. In addition, the probability integral formula is used to calculate and predict the ground subsidence on the filling area, which confirmed that the backfilling mining method is fully applicable in the Xinyang coal mine. The results of this study provide a certain theoretical basis for the determination of the filling process in the field.INTRODUCTIONIn China and other coal producing countries, gob is managed using the caving, filling, supporting, and slowly sinking methods (Zhang, Zhou, and Zhang, 2009). With the continuing development of the concept of green coal mining (Guo, Deng, and Zou, 2004), the filling method, which is safe and environmentally friendly, has been widely used in the field. On one hand, this method could reduce waste rock and other waste discharge. On the other hand, it could effectively slow the surface subsidence. Recently, strip-filling mining mostly adapted the arrangement of the strip backfill with equal intervals and widths (Xie et al., 2004), but the reasonability of this arrangement should be discussed. To arrange the intervals and width of the strip-filling body reasonably, Feng et al. (2019) put forward the “constructional backfill mining (CBM)” concept. The CBM is a type of backfill mining with low backfill rate, strong structural stability, and good backfill effect. The targets of the CBM include the efficient usage of solid waste resources in mining areas to reduce the backfill cost, the improvement of backfill materials and backfill technologies to increase the backfill efficiency, and rational planning of backfill and mining scheme to reuse the underground mining space. The determination of proper width and intervals for the strip-filling body is the main content of the CBM. Strip-filling mining using cemented coal gangue backfilling is the main method to undertake overburden of the overlying strata and to slow down the surface deformation. It also plays an effective role in cost reduction (Xu et al., 2007). This study focuses on proper determination of the strip-filling body parameters according to actual geological conditions by a simulation. It provides an appropriate reference for backfill mining in the Xinyang coal mine."

Equipment wear is strongly related to the performance of grinding circuits. In particular, SAG mills are subjected to the wear of their shell liners and grates. Changes in lifter height and face angle impact mill performance, while classification at the mill discharge is also affected as grates wear out. Moreover, liner mass loss caused by wear affects how operators interpret readings of sensors such as load cells or bearings pressure. Automating and optimising grinding circuits under these constrain becomes challenging due to the nonlinear and dynamic nature of the system. The operation of SAG mill grinding circuits remains largely dependent on human intervention, which frequently results in inconsistencies in performance across shifts, reflecting the operator’s personal preferences, experience, and other human factors. The influence of human factors can be reduced by careful training of operators as well as by automation using advanced supervisory control. The latter approaches could benefit from the development of dynamic process models that consider the effects of wear on the performance of equipment over time. This paper presents detailed industrial data showing the effects of wear on SAG mill performance. Additionally, a dynamic SAG mill model that accounts for these phenomena is proposed and demonstrated in a simulated environment. This model is shown to mimic the effect of wear on the performance of industrial scale mills and the operational constraints they are subject to, thus extending traditional SAG mill models. Incorporating wear into modelling and simulation platforms can improve the understanding of the effects that wear can have on the performance of key assets in comminution circuits and may allow the development of more robust model-based advanced process control strategies.

The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance is reviewed.

The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

Spalling and rockburst are unwanted brittle failures at the boundaries of underground excavations that are commonly observed in hard rock and high-stress environments at significant depths, although, spalling has also been observed in comparatively shallow soft rocks. The crack initiation (CI) stress threshold (representing the stress level at which new micro cracks begin to form in an intact rock) is widely used to establish the in-situ spalling strength, and is generally regarded as the lower limit of the long-term rock strength. This study analyses the evolution of CI and other mechanical properties for a high-porosity sandstone with an average UCS of 38 MPa under unconfined cyclic compressive loading. The results indicate that rock properties are variably affected by cyclic loading with; no significant effect on Youngs Modulus; a moderate increase in Poisson’s ratio and fracture angle; a moderate decrease in UCS; and a major reduction in the CI stress threshold. All of these changes were generally amplified by cyclic loading at higher stresses. From the results, it is concluded that rockburst and spalling limit in underground structures may reduce over time if the rock is subject to repetitive cyclic loading, and that the reductions will be greater for higher cyclic stresses. This may be a significant factor in the design and operation of some deep underground structures.

Scientific management is the methods used in increasing efficiency, and includes the use of efficiency-records. Effeciency-records do not alone constitute scientific management, but they are necessary to it, and any so-called system of management which is not based upon standards and standardization is fundamentally wrong. An efficient management and efficiency-methods in management are not the same thing. There are some people who have an instinctive genius for management and accomplish results without exactly knowing how they do it. Such a manager may obtain a very high efficiency without the aid of scientifically determined standards. On the other hand, it sometimes happens that poor results will accompany the use of efficiency-records, clue to a weak or indifferent management, which fails to make use of the information acquired. Efficiency-records are only a tool, and like other tools are worthless unless used. The ordinary cost, sheet and production-statement do not go far enough. They tell what has been done, but give no information as to how well it has been done. It is true that the man who is familiar with the industry and the plant in question may draw inferences and form a general idea of good work or bad work, but it can only be a very general and hazy idea. Comparisons with previous records or records of other plants are unsatisfactory, since there is nothing to show the cause of the differences.

The authors previously presented a method for predicting the tendency of oil field waters to deposit calcium sulfate. The present paper gives a similar method for calcium carbonate. Methods for predicting calcium carbonate scaling tendencies in fresh waters have been available for some time, but these could not be used for brines. By experimentally deriving the value of the K term in the Langelier equation, a method has been developed which applies to waters of high salt content. A statistical study is included which shows that the experimentally derived values of K are in good agreement with actual conditions. Several applications of the final equation to production practice are given. INTRODUCTION The authors previously presented a method for predicting the formation of calcium sulfate scale in oil field waters.' Although calcium sulfate deposition is important in production operations, the majority of scale problems involve calcium carbonate. The present communication discusses a method by which the formation of this type of scale in oil field waters can be predicted. Calcium carbonate precipitation is caused by a shift toward carbonate in the carbonate-bicarbonate-carbon dioxide equilibrium. When equilibrium shifts in the other direction, the precipitate goes back into solution. Since there is usually considerable delay between the establishment of an equilibrium and the precipitation or solution of calcium carbonate, unstable conditions exist in which a water will precipitate or dissolve calcium carbonate on standing. Tillmans? who did a major part of the early work on carbonate scaling, pointed out that the condition of equilibrium not only indicates the tendency of a water to scale but also is an indication of its corrosive properties. Previously precipitated calcium carbonate combines with iron to form a dense crust which inhibits corrosion. If the water tends to dissolve carbonate, the scale becomes porous, and electrolytic corrosion takes place. Tillmans1 work was extended by several investigators until in 1934 Langeliers developed an equation setting forth the conditions of carbonate equilibrium. By the use of this equation the pH of a water at equilibrium can be calculated. If the actual pH is higher than the calculated pH, the water has a tendency to form scale. If it is lower. the water has a tendency to be corrosive. Langelier's equation can be expressed in a simple form as follows: SI = pH-pCa-pA lk-K where: SI is the stability index. A positive index indicates scale formation. A negative index indicates corrosion. pH is the pH of the water sample, as actually determined. pCa is the negative logarithm of the calcium concentration. pAlk is the negative logarithm of the total alkalinity. K is a constant, the value of which depends on the total salt concentration and the temperature. This equation has been shown to apply to waters with totaI solid concentrations as high as 4.000 ppm. In fact, control of fresh water treatment by means of this equation has been standard text-book practice for a number of years. Nomographs have been worked out so that the stability index of a fresh water sample can be determined in a matter of minutes. Most oil field waters, however, contain well over 4,000 ppm of salts and for this reason the usual application of Langelier's equation can not be made. By an empirical method we have extended the application of the Langelier equation to waters of high salt concentration. By the use of this equation the tendency of oil field waters to deposit calcium carbonate can be predicted.

The problems of ore-bearing palaevolcanic structures in folded belts are actual because of their high productivity in nonferrous, ferrous and noble metals ores. Now relationships of location and conditions of formation for sulfide-massive and gold-bearing deposits are investigated very well in Urals. But carboniferous sulfide-barite mineralization, for example the barite veins in Arcaimsky palaevolcano are?nt studied enough now [3-5]. The purpose of this research is the studying of mineralogy and thermobarogeochemistry of barite from the hydrothermal veins. It will allow to determine the conditions of its formation and to compare it to the similar mineralization of others ore types.

TAKING into consideration the present state of geologic knowledge and present economic status of the oil industry, we have attempted to outline the six principal districts in which oil occurs and new pools may be expected. The map, Fig. 1, also shows the location of the present productive pools-about 100 in number. The unshaded areas represent territory where drilling depths to known sands are prohibitive with present development and pumping methods, or such sands are absent or give promise of such small production that deep wildcat tests are unwarranted. They include, also, territory where the oil-source materials are absent or not of the right type; and where shales are insufficient in the stratigraphic section to prevent the escape of oil and gas. Some doubtful districts are also included, such as the Pecos Valley, where the percentage of rigid beds, sandstones and limestones may be too great; and the Nacogdoches oil field, where small shallow production is obtained but where deep or large production is unlikely. The map is not offered as final but in the hope that it may prevent the expenditure of large sums in attempted development of unlikely territory and as the warning that those who drill in the unshaded territory do so at great risk. Those who drill in such territory should have large sums available for pioneering and experimenting and only attempt it if they can well afford to lose the money expended. Search in the shaded or cross-hatched areas is hazardous enough and should only be undertaken after detailed geologic surveys. Out of a total area of 256,000 sq. mi., the oil and gas districts comprise about 80,000 sq. mi.; the territory embraced in these districts is shown in the shaded portions. This may ultimately be increased somewhat by the addition of some minor districts, but such additions will be offset by territory probably now included in the unshaded areas. The shaded areas probably contain 98 per cent. or more of the ultimate production of the state, despite the fact that they represent only 31 per cent. of the total area.

"INTRODUCTION Feldspars represent one of the most abundant groups of minerals and constitute nearly Go percent of the material contained in the igneous rocks. They are grouped in a series of related aluminum silicates with varying amounts of potash, soda, and lime. .Approximately 85 percent of the feldspar produced in the United States is used as a flux in the production of glass, pottery, enamel and sanitary ware, brick, and tile. Notwithstanding the abundance of feldspar in the earth's crust, the only deposits that are worked to any extent are the pegmatites or coarsely crystalline dikes where natural segregation of the constituents facilitates recovery of the feldspar with a minimum of free quartz, mica, tourmaline, garnet, and other iron-bearing minerals that are detrimental in most ceramic industries.Although there are three glassplants and numerous other ceramic industries in Texas, all of the feldspar used in these plants is from other States. In the Llano region of central Texas, however, there are numerous coarse pegmatite dikes consisting primarily of feldspar and quartz in ratios up to 3 to 1. One of the more important of these dikes is the Badu Hill deposit in Llano County, Tex., which was first described by Carl Chelf 4/ in 1942. Following an examination of the deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1946, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by core drilling in cooperation with the Department of Ceramic Engineering, University of Texas. This report presents the results of the cooperative investigation, which was begun April 24, 1946, and completed May 17, 1946."

In bump-prone coal mines, roof and rib support is subject to dynamic as well as static loading. Although less frequently encountered, the dynamic loading component can result in violent coal expulsions into openings seriously threatening the safety of workers. Dynamic support systems that have been increasingly implemented in many deep hard rock mines for dynamic failure containment have not yet found their adaptation to deep coal mines at desired levels. This paper examines the potential use of some of these dynamic support systems in deep coal mining, particularly in the western United States. Fundamental principles of dynamic loading are reviewed in the context of their application to dynamic failure mechanisms in coal mines. Potential benefits and applicability of the suitable hard rock dynamic support systems are discussed in relation to coal bump mitigation. The resulting insight provides a starting point for development of dynamic support elements for bump prone conditions in deep coal mines.

Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) is used in the production of computer circuit boards and metal shapes in nickel, gold, copper, cobalt, etc. All varieties of .MOCVD use the decomposition of a vapour of organometallic compounds to produce different forms of ultra-pure metals, or alloys. CVD Manufacturing's proprietary MOCVD process has been adapted and developed to produce commercially ultra-pure metal shapes, metal powders, and metal foams. Therefore, it is a purification process. The typical process has three steps. First, a volatile metal organic compound is produced from volumetrically contaminated metals, metal oxides, etc. Typical feed materials are metal powders, ores, concentrates, or a slurry of metals and contaminants. Secondly, the volatile. metal organic compound is purified by fractional distillation. Thirdly, the purified metal organic compound is decomposed into different forms of ultra-pure metals, such as net shapes, powders, or metal foams. A mixture of metals can be purified either by the selective production of volatile materials, or a separation can be achieved during the second step, in the fractional distillation stage. The purification and recycling of metals by the MOCVD process will be discussed, particularly with regard to nickel, aluminum, gold, the platinum group and other metals.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. A method is described by whichX-ray pole figures and axis density figures may be plotted automatically. The X-ray data are obtained using a Siemens texture gonionleter and the Schulz reflection method. Composite sampling methods are used to obtain a full quadrant of the pole figure. The contour lines of the pole figure and axis density figures are drawn using a computer-controlled x-y plotter. The computer program used to draw the contours was obtained from ZBM. POLE figures used to describe crystallographic orientations of poly crystalline sheet materials are usually plotted manually from X-ray diffraction output in the form of a strip chart recording of the intensity distribution of a given crystallographic pole in physical space. Today's computers and associated plotting equipment now make it possible to plot pole figures and axis density figures automatically. Inverse pole figures have been determined by mathematically "inverting" X-ray pole figure data.'-' In general, these methods require complicated, time-consuming numerical calculations. A more economical but less accurate method is to determine the axis densities of low-index crystallographic poles using an X-ray diffractometer. When these axis densities are plotted in a unit stereographic triangle contour lines can be drawn to represent the axis density distribution. This can now be done automatically. Computers were used to plot pole figures by a method developed by Holland, Engler, and powers.' In their method intensity ratios based on a random standard sample were obtained from a strip chart recording, and the stereographic (x, y) coordinates of these ratios were determined by a computer. Symbols characteristic of different intensity ratio levels were then plotted using an automatic x, y plotter and intensity contours were drawn manually. The present paper describes a method by which pole figures and axis density figures have been automatically plotted from digital data obtained from a Siemens X-ray unit. Plotting was accomplished using an IBM 1620 computer and a Calcomp 563 digital plotter. COMPUTER PROGRAM The computer program was obtained from IBM Systems Reference Library, No. 1620-CS-05X, and was designed to plot contour maps from randomly distributed data. It consists of a set of twelve separate subprograms, four of which were used in this work. The program takes a given distribution of data points and by a numerical method determines the values at mesh points of a square grid system superimposed over the input data. The output data from this program is in a form suitable for input to the contour plotting program. A smoothing program is also available which calculates new mesh point values from a continuous function fitted to neighboring mesh points. The degree of smoothing depends on the number of points around a given grid point which are used to adjust or smooth the grid value. The contour plotting program is designed to allow the user to specify the interval, scale, and annotation of the contours to be plotted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pole Figure Data Points.
