Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) of drilled shafts requires 1.5-in (38-mm) or 2-in (51-mm) I.D. sonic access tubes to be installed inside the steel reinforcement cage. The sonic access tubes do not contribute to the structural capacity of the drilled shaft. The proposed use of Ischebeck TITAN T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar for Cross Hole Sonic Logging Access Tubes Combined with Longitudinal Concrete Reinforcing in Drilled Shafts (patent pending) is discussed as an alternative method of construction and CSL probe access. The T73/56 hollow threaded rebar/sonic access tube performs as a high strength rebar while at the same time creating a 2.2-in (56-mm) I.D. sonic access tube. The deformed high strength hollow bar provides better adhesion to concrete thus reducing the problem of debonding associated with smooth PVC and steel pipe. A cost comparison using conventional rebar with added sonic access tubes is discussed. The use of T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar as a value engineering alternative can reduce both material and labor costs for drilled shaft construction and can provide an advantage where anchor bolt cages and longitudinal reinforcing create congestion.

RECENT work by J. Darby, Jr. in this laboratory has shown that the reported vanadium-rich limit of the s phase in the Co-V system at 1200°C is in error. The appearance of a second phase in s actually is restricted to alloys containing over 68 atomic pct V. The error in the original value is due apparently to a reaction that takes place along the numerous cracks in the s specimens between the alloy and the impurities present in the He + 8 pct H atmosphere in the annealing furnace. Such a reaction and the consequent appearance of a second phase can be suppressed if the alloys are sealed under vacuum in Vycor tubing. The new value of 68 atomic pct V for the vana-dium-rich limit of the s phase in the Co-V system effects slightly the s compositions calculated from average values of N, and N,. for various s phases. The standard deviation between experimental mean compositions and those calculated from the assumption that s is characterized by a constant number of 3d + 4s electrons per atom (N,), is slightly reduced from 9.1 to 8.8 pct. The maximum divergence for the V-Mn s phase is reduced from 15.5 to 14 atomic pct. The standard deviation calculated from constant electron vacancy numbers given by N.. = 4.66 (Mo + Cr + V) + 3.2 (Mn) + 2.2(Fe) + 1.71(Co) + 1.6(Ni) is now greatly reduced, as the maximum divergence for this correlation previously occurred in the V-Co system. This maximum divergence is reduced from 7.6 to 2.3 pct, and the standard deviation for all s- phases is reduced from 4.1 to only 2.9 pct. The correlation for electron vacancy numbers given by N. 5.66 (V when with Ni or Co) + 4.88 (V when with Mn or Fe) + 4.66 (Cr + Mn) + 3.3 (Mn) + 2.66 (Fe) + 1.71 (Co) + 0.61 (Ni) is made slightly worse, and the standard deviation increases from 2.8 to 3.9 pct. These changes, however, do not affect the conclusions of the paper.' The deviation between calculated and experimental s compositions is much less for either one of the electron vacancy correlations than for the correlation with the number of 3d + 4s electrons.

Novel compounds of hydroxycarbamoyl carboxylic acids, including 2-hydroxycarbamoyl -3-methlcyclohexane carboxylic acid (HCMC), 2-hydroxycarbamoylmethyl decylen-4-yl carboxylic acid (HCDC) and 2-hydroxycar-bamoylmethyl tridecylen-4-yl carboxylic acid (HCTC) were synthesized. The flotation behaviors of diaspore, kaolinite and illite using these compounds as collectors were investigated. The flotation results revealed that the floatability of the minerals was, in descending order, diaspore and kaolinite, followed by illite, and the ability to collect the minerals was, in ascending order, HCMC and HCDC, followed by HCTC. At a dosage of 2×10-4 mol/L, both HCDC and HCTC show a strong ability to collect diaspore and a weak ability to float kaolinite and illite. The flotation recovery of diaspore is over 90% and that of kaolinite and illite less than 30%. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum and zeta potential, as well as the adsorption amount, indicated that the adsorption interaction between HCTC and diaspore was primarily a kind of chemisorption in the form of chelate rings, while the interaction between the collector and aluminosilicate mineral was dominated by physisorption. It was concluded that the novel hydroxycarbamoyl carboxylic acid compounds are highly selective collectors for the flotation of diaspore vs. aluminosilicate minerals.

"The apatite staffelite ores (ASO) of Kovdor deposit are dominated by fine-grained aggregates containing both phosphate minerals and silicates — vermiculite, smectites, zeolites. These minerals exhibit ion-exchange properties. In this connection, the magnitude of cation exchange, along with the content of P2O5 and CO2, is an important property of apatite staffelite ore, which largely determines the performance of concentration processes. In the examined ASO samples, the magnitude of cation exchange measured in terms of Ca2+ is 2546-4790 g/ton. The conducted laboratory studies of apatite staffelite ores with various mineral composition showed that adding calcined soda improves the recovery of P2O5 into the flotation concentrate. Full-scale tests were conducted at the apatite staffelite ore processing plant at Kovdor Mining and Concentration Operation and demonstrated the high performance of the proposed agent treatment. The test results showed that in the flotation of apatite staffelite ores, the optimum calcined soda feed rates range from 3,500 to 5,000 g/ton of the flotation feed. With close flotation feed and concentrate grade parameters, the P2O5 recovery gain is 17%. The effect of adding soda is associated with the desorption of the hardness cations from the minerals, precipitation in the pulp and, accordingly, improvement in the ionic composition of the liquid phase of the flotation feed due to a reduced content of calcium ions. Based on the test results, the proposed agent treatment with an elevated feed rate of calcined soda was implemented at Kovdor Mining and Concentration Operation in the flotation of apatite staffelite ore. The apatite staffelite ores (ASO) of Kovdor deposit are dominated by fine-grained aggregates containing both phosphate minerals and silicates — vermiculite, smectites, zeolites. These minerals exhibit ion-exchange properties. These minerals have certain properties requiring a more detailed examination for a better understanding of the flotation properties of apatite staffelite ores."

The objective of this investigation was to verify the effectiveness of commercial and synthetic depressing agents in a complex oxidized zinc mineral flotation flowsheet using sodium sulfides and amine. The flotation tests were run on a finely-disseminated calamine ore grading 16.96% Zn and containing smithsonite, hemimorphite, cerussite, calcite, quartz and iron oxide, present essentially in colloidal form. The reagents used in the testing can be grouped into four classes: guar, starch, celluloses and acrylic polymers having various degrees of substitution and molecular weights. The depressants exhibiting the greatest selectivity towards the gangue (considered as a whole) are tripolyphosphate, polycarboxylic acids, methylcarboxylate guars and ethyl hydroxylic starch. In the rougher stage, the Zn recovery ranged from 70% to 80%, and the Zn grade ranged from 27% to 29%. In the Zn-Fe2O3 separation, the compounds ensuring the most efficient separation are the tripolyphosphate and the polycarboxylic acids. In the Zn-SiO2 separation, the compounds that exhibit the best separation efficiency are tripolyphosphate and guar of methylcarboxylic sodium salt. In the case of the Zn-Ca separation, methyl-carboxylic guar exerts the best depressing effect and does not adversely affect the Zn recovery. The separation provided by ethyl hydroxylic guar is also good, although not as good as the preceding reagent. Regarding the Zn-Al separation, the tripolyphosphate, the celluloses and the carboxylate guars are the best depressants. A hypothesis is advanced to interpret the depressing action of the most effective reagents.

"Significant increases in mill liner life and plant availability can be achieved by following guidelines that have evolved from over twenty years of practical experience with autogenous grinding (A0) and semi-autogenous grinding (SA0) mills. A0 and SA0 mill liner functions, performance criteria, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures are reviewed. Operating practices that can lead to accelerated wear and breakage are discussed.IntroductionEfforts to improve the performance of liners for autogenous grinding (AG) and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills began as soon as the modern, large-diameter versions of these comminution machines were first intalled in commercial plants twenty years ago . While concentrators with conventional circuits were typically running at 95010 or better mill availability, many of the new autogenous and semi-autogenous circuits were struggling to achieve 80% availability. Liner maintenance, which involves not only material and labour costs but also loss of production, was quickly identified as one of the major reasons for downtime.Today, liner designs and materials have evolved to the point where virtually maintenance-free liner life of two to three years is possible in autogenous mills and one year in the more severe operating conditions encountered in semi-autogenous mills. Of concern, however, is that hard-won lessons from the past sometimes seem to be forgotten or ignored during the design of new mills and the operation of existing mills. As liner suppliers, we are often confronted with performance problems that could have been avoided by applying well-publicized guidelines for liner design and materials selection.This paper provides an overview of AG and SAG mill liner functions, criteria for evaluating performance, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures. Also, operating conditions that can lead to accelerated wear and liner breakage are discussed in detail."

A laboratory experimental research project was conducted to evaluate the use of chlorine for the oxidative destruction of residual ammonia which may remain in ground water after in-situ uranium solution mining operations. The work tested the idea of the injection of high strength calcium hypochlorite solution into the mining zone to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas as a final clean-up process for ammonia removal from the ground water system. The paper details ammonia removal efficiency as a function of chlorine dose, reactant and product material balances, and how the concept may be used as a final ground water restoration process.

The Lower Cretaceous salt deposits of the Gabon Basin and Congo Basin were said down on ton of an Burly Cretaceous Lato Jurassic, continental graben fill that represent!) the rifting phase of the Afro-American continent. The salt 13 characterized by high percentages of potash and magnesium salts and the scarcity of sulphates and carbonates. The salt probably originated from a brine that was already enriched in high-soluble salts before entering the Gabon Congo basins. Their low-solubility equivalents are found in the Cuanza Basin of Angola. Commercial mining of the potash salt is only possible in those onshore areas where it is essentially undisturbed, shallow and of the right chemical composition. These conditions are net in Congo where the Holle mine produces from rich sylvinite deposits.

An application of the statistical and computer techniques in basic mineral processing research is illustrated by means of a case history involving the study of starch adsorption on calcite. Multi-factorial experimental designs and computer techniques were used for determining the effect of different system variables, such as solution pH, sodium oleate concentration and starch concentration, and to obtain a mathematical model of the response. Response maps enabled the investigators to see the effects clearly and to predict the results of changes in factor levels within the design region. Use of time-shared computers and plotters made data processing and analysis efficient and relatively inexpensive.

A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

Development of the Rail-Haulage Sub-assembly for the Production Sub-system (UGMHS)* required the use of ,a newly formulated model in order to best satisfy the requirements. Many of the ideas of the former single-stage rail simulator included in the original version of UGMHS have been used, together with the results of experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating situations (Sanford, 1969). The sub-assembly is developed as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze track systems using production distri¬butions as data input. In addition, since this model is designed to replace the original sub-assembly in UGMHS, the linking procedure is identical with respect to bi-directional information flow. The flow of coal from production sections, for example, fills the mine cars, but a condition of "out of empties" or "full of loaded" at a loading station will shut down inby production sections. A requirements analysis was conducted to determine specifically how the model could best serve the user. Operating management had the largest input in developing the following requirements for the Rail Sub-assembly: a) data input in mixed narrative - numeric form to permit user identification of the input variables; b) a user option to extract several ranges of detail in model output, i.e., an average shift summary of minimum retrieval

Introduction The Open Cut is one of the best known landmarks in South Dakota's Black Hills. It is the site of the original discovery of the Homestake ledge, or lead, in 1876. Between that time and 1945, the Open Cut produced about 36 Mt (40 million st) of gold ore, the majority of which was drawn from underground operations. In 1981, a drilling program was undertaken to determine how much ore the old timers left behind. The results of this study indicated an ore body made up of broken and caved ground, and solid blocks in pillars and crowns. Reserves are estimated at about 6.8 Mt (7.5 million st) of gold ore, grading at 4 g/t (0.116 oz per st). Total tonnage of material, including waste, is estimated at more than 60 Mt (66 million st). The mining plan is a combination open pit and underground operations. The bottom 78 m (255 ft) will be mined by the underground panel-caving method. The open pit was designed as a contractor operation up to the expected milling stage or the point of sustained ore production. The pit was designed to avoid disturbance of US Highway 85 near Lead, SD. In 1983, the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved the mining and reclamation plan. Test mining began in the north of the Open Cut using open pit methods. Upon completion of the test pit, Homestake Mining's board of directors approved an expanded mine plan. They committed an additional $27.1 million to prestrip the ore body that is expected to yield 23 t (750,000 oz) of gold. Project life is estimated at 15 years. Exploration program In early 1980, 10 diamond drill holes were drilled from the surface in the vicinity of the east side of the Open Cut. The reserves delineated by that drilling were too small to justify their development. A continuation of this study attempted to quantify the tonnage remaining in the bottom of the Open Cut in the crushed remnants of old stope-and-crown pillars. This was originally thought to be minable by improved drawhole methods using highly mechanized procedures. By early 1981, however, thinking turned toward surface mining methods. The effort to quantify minable ore tonnage ultimately involved drilling 385 reverse-circulation rotary drill holes. These were drilled from August 1981 to March 1983 in several groups of holes. Each group, or drilling program, had a slightly different immediate goal or purpose. The holes were drilled to various depths using truck-mounted Drill Tech 40 drills with doublewalled 76 mm (3 in.) pipe with 134 mm (5.25 in.) three-cone rotary bits. Initially, wet drilling was employed using a cyclone collection system. Since cutting recovery was not as high as it should have been, all subsequent drilling was dry. The cuttings were collected and deposited by way of a cyclone into the sample bag. The pickup for the cuttings using the three-cone bits was about 50 mm (2 in.) above the bottom of the hole. Overall cutting recovery for the drilling program was estimated at 75%. Samples were taken on each 1.5 m (5 ft) of hole drilled. Each sample was split into three 48-g (1-2/3 assay ton) charges. The accepted value was the straight average of the three charges. Because of the known "nugget effect," assays were nearly impossible to duplicate. Therefore, to validate the regular assays, a series of screen fire assays were run. Based on this method of assays and checks, it was concluded that 10% more ounces would be produced than indicated by mine grade. Test pit The northernmost portion of the mine as planned is known as the Terraville test pit. This portion was mined ahead of the rest and separately. It provided answers to questions on slope stability, reserves correlation, mill recoveries, mining costs, and surface mining conditions in various weather and ground conditions since many boulders and much timber were expected. The mining plan for this portion of the pit was successful. More ore was mined than was expected. Mixing of Open Cut ore with underground ore in the mill feed was successful. "Effect of attrition scrubbing on the recovery of platinum group metals(PGMs) from automotive catalytic converter was discussed. The attrition scrubbing as comminution and separation process was effective for the recovery of the catalyst layer, ?-alumina, from ceramic supporting matrix, cordierite, by physical impact and shearing action between particles in the scrubbing vessel. The catalyst layer was dislodged from the surface of the supporting matrix into fine particles less than 45µm by attrition scrubbing. The production of fine fraction less than 45µm increased as the residence time for attrition scrubbing increased. The fine fraction obtained at the residence time of 40min contained 19.25% CeO2, 1.93% ZrO2 and 418.8ppp PGMs. The recovery of ?-alumina in the fine fraction increased as the residence time increased. Simultaneously, the recoveries of CeO2, ZrO2 and PGMs increased and reached up to 82.9% CeO2, 78.7% ZrO2 and 78.9% PGMs at the attrition scrubbing time of 40min. The production of the fine fraction and recovery of ?- alumina increased when the solid concentration and initial feed size increased.IntroductionThe automobile catalytic converters contain appreciable amount of PGMs. Currently several million tons of used catalytic converters are disposed annually worldwide, each containing about 0.5-1g of platinum and 1-2g of all PGMs1). The recovery technologies of PGMs from spent catalytic converters have been thoroughly reviewed by numerous researchers since last decades. Two types of methods, wet and dry processes, have been commercially operated. In the wet process, the PGMs on the spent catalytic converters were dissolved mostly in the form of chlorocomplex, MCl6 2-, by contacting with aqueous solutions. Subsequently the resulting solutions are treated to concentrate and the precious metal ions are reduced by introducing metals such as Al, Fe and Zn in the concentrated system2). In the dry process, the spent catalytic converters are melted, in some case with CaO, at an elevated temperature to produce a low viscous slag. The PGMs in the melt are separated by allowing them to adsorb on Fe or Cu having high specific gravity7). Although highly pure precious metals could be obtainable, the recovery technologies of PGMs currently operated seem not to be cost-effective since PGMs embedded in these types of catalytic converters are present in very small quantities."

The vacuum tin-fusion method of analysis for hydrogen, developed by Carney, Chipman, and Grant, has been modified to permit the analysis of the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. A properly prepared sample can be analyzed in 10 min with a probable error of ±0.12 ppm. A study of various methods for storage of hydrogen samples shows that samples can be safely held in a dry ice-acetone bath as long as six days. Storage in liquid nitrogen is necessary for samples to be held one week or more. HE vacuum tin-fusion method, as developed by I- Carney, Chipman and Grant,' is the only analytical procedure which has shown promise of being fast enough for use in the control of hydrogen during steelmaking. It was felt that further simplification and faster speed of operation could be effected by the use of thermal conductivity measurements for analysis of the gases evolved in the tin-fusion method. The application of conductivity measurements to the tin-fusion method is possible because: 1—the evolved gas is essentially a mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide with a hydrogen content usually over 50 pct, 2—the evolved gas is collected at a relatively low pressure, and 3— the thermal conductivities of CO and N2 are practically identical while that of hydrogen is very much greater. The major part of this research program was devoted to the construction and calibration of a vacuum tin-fusion apparatus which analyzes the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. The second phase of the problem was associated with the development of a procedure for storage of samples prior to analysis. With the rapid quenching method for hydrogen sampling,' which seems to be the most practical for steel mill use, it is necessary that the samples be stored safely during the interval between sampling and analysis if the hydrogen content of the molten metal is to be maintained in the supersaturated solid samples. The thermal conductivity bridge has been used for a number of years in the analysis of certain gas mixtures. An elementary discussion of the theory and practice of gas analysis by thermal conductivity measurements is given by Minter.3 A more comprehensive discussion of the theory and of the various measuring circuits is presented by Daynes.' A complete knowledge of the theory and properties of the thermal conductivity of gases and gaseous mixtures can be gained by a study of the standard textbooks on the kinetic theory of gases."' The existing data on the thermal conductivity of single gases are reviewed by Hawkins: that for a number of binary gas mixtures by Daynes' and Lindsay." The thermal conductivity method may be applied to the determination of the composition of a binary mixture if: 1—the thermal conductivity of the mixture varies monotonically with composition, and 2— the two gases have measurably different thermal conductivities. The greater the difference between the two gases, the greater the sensitivity of the method.10 he method is applicable to the analysis of multicomponent mixtures when all of the gases in the mixture except one have nearly the same thermal conductivity. Fortunately, the mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide evolved by the tin-fusion analysis' falls in this latter classification. The thermal conductivities of nitrogen and carbon monoxide are practically equal; and the thermal conductivity of hydrogen is approximately seven times that of the other two. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide at known temperature and pressure can be related directly to the percentage of hydrogen in the mixture by suitable calibration. Usually the thermal conductivity of a mixture of gases is measured at atmospheric pressure where the thermal conductivity is independent of pressure over a wide pressure range. At very low pressures (below 1 mm Hg), the thermal conductivity of gases varies with the pressure. This phenomenon has been utilized in the Pirani vacuum gage for the measurement of pressures in the range of 10" to 10-0 mm of mercury.= Very little has been published concerning the variation of thermal conductivity with pressure at intermediate pressures between 1 mm Hg and 1 atm. However, preliminary measurements indicated that the thermal conductivities did vary with pressure over the range of pressures (up to 10 mm Hg) at which gases are delivered from the vacuum pump. Therefore, the calibration of the thermal conductivity cell had to be planned to include the effects of both gas composition and pressure. Such a calibration chart is shown in Fig. 4. Every paste backfill system is typically unique, this being due to the particular tailings characteristics, the backfill recipe and requirements of mine planning. Key to successful transport to the underground workings through the boreholes and the distribution pipelines is the quality of cemented paste, being free of lumps and recipe components uniformly mixed. Certain types of mixer require that the mixing environment is required to be intensive as possible. In this sense, the present paper point out some of the general aspects of paste plant design, a short discussion on paste recipe and process equipment, followed by a technical comparison between a batch mixing and a continuous mixing process, currently applied to the production of cemented paste tailings for mine backfill.

"Recent rockfall events, like the Tramin rockfall at January 21st, 2014, underline the significance of a comprehensive hazard assessment. A common way of estimating the hazard along infrastructure is the performance of run-out modelling using 3D rockfall codes like Rockyfor3D or RAMMS::Rockfall (Dorren, 2010, Bartelt et al., 2013). The potential block volumes are often roughly estimated from talus material and an overview of the source area, where the magnitude assessment is usually physically and intellectually demanding. Nevertheless especially for increased magnitudes, the volume estimation is crucial in terms of hazard analysis. Mid-Magnitude-Events exceed the load capacity of the most mitigation measures and their date of failure is hard to predict. Here we define the term Mid-Magnitude-Events as block volumes between boulder falls (10-100 m³) and block falls (100-10,000 m³) (Whalley, 1984).The current contribution provides an approach of integral process analysis for a 200 m3 carbonate block above the federal road B 305 near the city of Salzburg in the Bavarian Alps, Germany. We performed detailed analysis of the critical carbonate block exposed to planar failure. The block volume and the dimensions of the failure surface were mapped in detail, due to the unique occasion of an accessible failure surface. The discontinuity persistence was recorded to assess a minimal degree of fragmentation for a potential failure scenario. A maximum degree of fragmentation was estimated due to recording of block dimensions at the talus slope resulting from frequent rockfalls.We performed parameter studies in terms of run-out modelling using the code RAMMS::Rockfall (Bartelt et al., 2013), taking the recorded data for block fragmentation into account. In our contribution, we aim to demonstrate a comprehensive approach for hazard assessment of mid magnitude rockfalls, taking detachment processes, fragmentation and run-out analysis into account."

As a part of Mumbai City Mega Drinking Water Project at Amar Mahal Tunnel-1 Ghatkopar East Mumbai, drinking water tunnels were proposed by MCGM from Amar Mahal to Trombay reservoirs, Amar Mahal to Wadala and further up to Parel. The pipeline has to be underground and laid at a depth of 5.5m. The initial proposal was to provide sheet piling to enable the safe excavation and installation of underground pipeline. However, installation of sheetpiles was practically not feasible due to the existing soil strata for driving the sheet piles. Hence, it was proposed to install micropiles instead of sheet piles. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with temporary struts for shoring protection works in this project.

The United States has traditionally been the world's largest producer and net exporter of phosphate rock and related fertilizer products with the exception of rock exports from Morocco. In recent years, however, U.S. producers have faced increasing competition from operations in foreign countries, leaving the future position of the U.S. phosphate .industry as a leader in the world markets somewhat less certain. This paper will review the U.S. phosphate rock industry in relation to its known demonstrated reserves, its historical and present production and export levels, and its future mining potential. The paper will include an analysis of the availability of phosphate rock in the United States represented by cost-tonnage relationships. The U.S. phosphate rock industry has for decades provided raw materials at reasonable costs to the phosphate fertilizer industry, and the fertilizer products have been made available to both domestic and international markets. Natural soils normally contain low quantities of phosphorus, and cultivation exhausts the available phosphorus through the removal of harvested products. Yields diminish, and it becomes necessary to apply phosphorus to the soil in an amount at least sufficient to compensate for removal. Raising the level of phosphorus also permits nitrogen and potash fertilizer nutrients to be effective and sustain the high crop yields necessary to support increasing food demands. In only a few areas of the world are soils, climate, rainfall, and low-cost phosphate fertilizer available to assure high agricultural yields in successive years. One of these areas is the central United States and south central Canada. By contrast, in the Soviet Union, the weather conditions in farming areas frequently cause crops to either bake or drown in the field. To attempt to counter the effect of weather on production, the U.S.S.R. has increased use of fertilizer and equipment in recent years. The effect of fertilizer on various crops has been documented, and in all cases, improvements in yield and plant development were noted, as was the ability of fertilizer to mitigate the effects of unfavorable climatic conditions. Phosphate resources can be classified as either identified or undiscovered. In the identified classification, we are principally concerned with demonstrated phosphate resources, or those that have been measured or indicated. In the southeastern United States, the phosphate mining areas of Florida and the Carolinas have been explored and drilled extensively in attempts to locate new deposits. The exploration programs indicate that another Florida Bone Valley Formation or North Carolina Pamlico River Deposit is unlikely to be discovered in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain. Phosphate rock deposits of commercial interest in the western United States are located in Montana, western Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Idaho. The deposits are in the Permian Phosphoria Formation with most of the mining activity occurring in Idaho. Although substantial demonstrated resources have been identified, recovery costs and the field's isolation from markets have restricted growth of the industry in the west. The phosphate rock deposits in Tennessee are well known, and it is estimated that about 29 million metric tons1 are potentially recoverable. Undiscovered deposits of brown rock in Tennessee would likely be quite small.

Dado que la geología económica estudia las materias del reino mineral que el individuo extrae para sus necesidades vitales, el presente texto señala la relación de ciertos minerales (estaño, tunsgteno, antimonio, manganeso, oro, plata, cobre, zinc) de la zona minera sur del Perú, con la geología regional y sus contribuciones económicas a través de personalidades como Balta, Steinmann, Dueffas, Douglas, Bulman, G. Peteraen, Newell, Heim; Newell, Chronic y Roberts; Jenka, Ahlfeld y Bruggen. De acuerdo a este estudio geológico se infiere que tanto el oro y el hierro pertenecen a la costa, así como los yacimientos de plata, plomo y zinc son de la cordillera volcánica, la línea de tungsteno de Cabanillas se encuentra asociada a granitos, los depósitos telegramáticos de cobre, antimonio, mercurio y plata, se encuentran relacionados a líneas tectónicas en la depresión del Titicaca. Asimismo en el yacimiento oriental, tenemos el peri y apomagmáticos de calcopirita, plomo-zinc, plata, plomo-plata, antimonio, oro, tungsteno y estaño. Finalmente, la repartición de zonas mineralizadas responde a dos causas: la asociación a varias clases de intrusiones y la relación directa a distintas categorías de líneas y regiones tectónicas.

"Designs, installation procedures and performance characteristics of martensitic cast steel concaves are reviewed. Longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and eliminating the need to scarf joints are the principal benefits of using martensitic steel to replace austenitic12% Mn (Hadfield's) steel, the traditional concave material for large gyratory crushers. Installation procedures that reduce the risk of breakage are described. Operating practices that affect concave performance are also discussed.IntroductionThe crushing machine considered to be the forerunner of the modem gyratory crusher was patented in 1878 by Charles M. Brown of the Gates Iron Works(1). The earliest gyratory crushers with receiving openings of 6 to 12 inches were fed by hand, and the crushing capacity of a mine was increased simply by installing more small crushers. The introduction of the steam shovel to open pit mining around the tum of the century provided an incentive for much larger primary crushers, and gyratory crushers with a 48 in. receiving opening were being built by 1910, followed not long afterward by machines with 54 in. and 60 in. openings to . Fortunately for the crusher maintenance people of that era, an austenitic 12% Mn steel with exceptional toughness was already available, having been discovered by Robert Abbot Hadfieldoi in 1882. Although small gyratory crushers working soft- to medium-hard rock reportedly used chilled cast iron (white iron) wear parts, these newer and much larger machines were fitted with ""Hadfield's manganese steel"" concaves and mantles to withstand the impact associated with handling large rocks .M E International first challenged the long-standing convention of using 12% Mn steel concaves in large gyratory crushers in the late 1960s when they supplied upper row concaves in martensitic cast steel for a 60-109 primary crusher at a taconite plant on the Iron Range. Since then, martensitic steels have been successfully substituted for 12010 Mn steel in concaves for more than seventy primary gyratory crushers processing iron, copper and precious metals ores, industrial minerals and crushed stone.This paper reviews materials, designs and performance characteristics of martensitic steel concaves in large gyratory crushers. The principal benefits include significantly longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and the elimination of scarfing. Obtaining the full measure of these benefits and minimizing the risk of breakage is strongly dependent on installation procedures, which are described in some detail. Operating practices that can affect performance are also discussed."
