Votorantim Metals Corporation is one of the leader companies in the extraction of zinc in Brazil. One of its mines, located in the city of Vazante - MG, was composed by zinc silicate ores, but recent studies have indicated a change in mineralization type with arise of zinc sulphide’s ore bodies with disseminations of galena (PbS) and silver. The liberation size between sphalerite and galena in this ore occurs in very fine granulometry (approximately 18µm), fact that has negatively influenced into the flotation process. Aiming to reduce this problem, studies about the use of dispersing in the flotation process have started. Thus, this study investigated the action of different reagents dispersing on the stability of the suspensions. The tests were carried out with samples of mineral galena and sphalerite using four types of dispersing within two different dosages and two pH. The reagents tested were sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethiylcellulose, and sodium polyacrylate. The results of the dispersion tests were analysed in relation to dispersion index. The tests with hexametaphosphate showed high dispersion for both galena and sphalerite. The sodium polyacrylate and arboxymethiylcellulose showed a high dispersion index for galena and a low index for sphalerite implying that reagent can be used in the concentration process of galena.

EXPERIENCE has shown that certain known natural conditions and other indefinite characteristics combine to make a mining area vulnerable to mountain bumps. Some of the known conditions are heavy overburden, an overlying stratum of strong non-elastic rock, a structurally strong coal seam that does not crush easily and yet is the weakest stratum in the series, and a floor stratum of more than ordinary firmness. The indefinite characteristics could include resistance of top or bottom of a coal seam to lateral flow, effect of immediate top and bottom strata, nature of the coal seam, and other factors about which very little is known. It is in this area that exhaustive study is needed to achieve positive control of the dreaded mountain bump hazard. In the Gary district, West Virginia, two of the five operating mines have areas known to be vulnerable to mountain bumps.These are the No. 2 and 6 mines, which are working the Pocahontas No. 4 coal seam. In this area the seam is overlain at a zero to 10-ft interval by the massive Eckman sandstone, which is about 100 ft thick in the vulnerable areas. Total overburden, consisting of shale, coal seams, and sandstones, ranges from 700 to 1400 ft where bumps have occurred (Fig. 1). The coal seam is 4 to 8 ft thick and has a weak columnar structure of very soft and spongy or woody coal. The immediate top is either the Eckman sandstone or hard shale, both of which provide generally good roof conditions for mining operations. The bottom ranges from medium to hard gray shale. The incidence of bumps in the Gary district dates from about 1930 and can be correlated to some degree with the increased rate of extraction attained with mechanical mining. During early years of operation at the No. 2 and 6 mines, most of the work was development and under comparatively light cover. As overburden became heavier, together with an increasing percentage of coal coming from pillar extraction, mountain bumps began to occur. Before 1945 they were much less severe than in later years, and because there were no injuries or fatalities, no records were kept. But by 1951 the incidence of bumps had increased to such extent that it became evident a mining system would have to be designed to eliminate or at least minimize these occurrences. Drawing on experience with modified versions of old systems and certain characteristics peculiar to the Pocahontas No. 4 coal seam, the district mining engineer, Martin Hayduk, outlined the essential factors for bump control in the Gary district. These control factors indicated: 1) The highly stressed area, which lies within the limits of convergence effects, moves at approximately the same rate as the retreating pillar line. 2) There is a decided softening of the periphery of blocks which is greatest and deepest on the gob side. 3) Blocks less than 45 ft wide never have been known to bump in the Pocahontas seams. Fig. 2 shows the mining plan based on these observations—a thin-pillar system with a minimum of secondary development. It was recognized from the start that the Hayduk system had certain limitations. When pillar work backed up to an inevitable surrounded block it was no longer applicable; also, burnt bottom and/or unknown factors reduced the system's effectiveness in certain headings. Since there was no way to eliminate the loaded block, it was decided to experiment with auger drilling to attain controlled release of this stored-up energy. Abstract In the course of coal studies undertaken by the B.C. Department of Mines in southeastern British Columbia, special attention was directed to problems of coal seam correlation. Methods that had been used successfully in other coalfields were found, in the Crowsnest area, to have a restricted use or furnished only additional evidence that might prove helpful when used in conjunction with other criteria. A correlation technique involving semi-quantitative spectrographic analyses of coal ashes was developed. Elements detected in the ash include Si, B, P, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Ti, Cr, Ga, Ca, Al, Ge, Ba, Mo, V, Ag, ?y;b, Na, Zn, Zr, Ni, Sr, Cu, K. Of these, the elements found to be most useful in correlation were Na, Ba, Si, V, and Mg. The element Na was invariably detected in the ash from one of the seams but was not found in samples taken from any of the others. In all of the four seams sampled statistically, significant differences in the amount of certain trace elements were noted. When the values obtained for these trace elements were portrayed in the form of histograms, the resulting diagrams had a characteristic shape for each seam. The diagrams provided a basis for seam identification within the limited area (8,000 feet by 4,000 feet) that was investigated. Introduction During the field seasons of 1946, 1947, and 1948 the British Columbia Department of Mines undertook a geological investigation of the coal measures of southeastern B.C. As field work progressed in the Crowsnest area it was found that, within the Kootenay formation, which contains all the commercial seams of the region, the coal beds are the most persistent stratigraphic units. Because of relatively rapid changes in ?both the thickness of the seams and the interval between seams, difficulty has invariably been experienced in attempts at correlation. Even short-range correlati0ns by able geologists who have worked in the Crowsnest coal basin have been questioned by the operating companies. It was apparent, therefore, that a more dependable correlation technique was needed so that stratigraphic and structural studies could be of greatest value. This paper presents, firstly, a summary of the results obtained in attempted correlations using methods that have been found effective in other coalfields. Secondly, a method based on semi-quantitative spectrographic analysis of coal ash is described and the apparently promising results are discussed.

Mineralogical and metallurgical scoping testwork were carried out to investigate the production of separate, marketable gold and platinum concentrates. The study utilized a flotation concentrate assaying approximately 5 wt% gold and 5 grams per tonne platinum. The gold-platinum mineralization was recovered from a placer deposit. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis identified gold as zoned Au- Ag and Au-Ag-Cu alloys. Platinum primarily occurred as weakly zoned, variably magnetic Pt- Pd-Fe alloys. A combination of gravity and magnetic separations resulted in a gold concentrate grading 86.9 wt% Au (and 9.lwt% Ag) and a separate platinum concentrate grading 400 g/t Pt with recoveries of 94.5% and 96.7%, respectively. Magnetohydrostatic separation (MHS) using the Magstream 200 Separator indicated promising results.

MODELS of mines may be classified under three headings: (a) sheet models, (b) solid models, and (c) skeleton models. Sheet Models are made of sheets of glass, celluloid, or a transparent plastic material. The sheets are mounted in a frame which holds them in a parallel position, either horizontally or vertically. Mine plans are traced on the horizontal sheets; sections on the vertical sheets. The model may be illuminated by electric lights which are separated from the sheets by an opalescent screen. It is viewed from above or from the side in such a way that the plans or sections are superimposed. Sheet models are very useful for the illustration of mines with narrow, steep-dipping veins, but they do not give a satisfactory representation of a large mine with a flat-dipping vein. Large sheets of glass are difficult to handle and to support in a frame.? It is difficult to see through a considerable number of them. Solid Models are made of plaster, concrete, wood, or other material usually in the form of slabs in which the mine workings are indicated by properly dimensioned cavities in the model. The slabs are coloured to show the veins, country rock, faults, etc. The model is divided along selected sections in order to give access to the interior by the temporary removal of parts. Solid models may be used to illustrate large orebodies of the Sullivan type, but they are cumbersome because parts must be removed to study details of structure. Skeleton Models are ones in which the underground cavities are represented by metal, wood, plaster, or wax proportionately shaped and held in place by a frame. They illustrate the work which has been done but do not show the position of the veins, dykes, faults, etc., in the unworked parts. It is necessary to project by eye between workings in order to determine the location of these features. The essential difference between the skeleton model and the solid model is that the skeleton model represents the mine workings by solid forms and does not show the unworked parts of the vein, whereas the solid model shows the vein as a solid and the mine workings as cavities in it. The skeleton model lends itself well to the representation of a large mine with large stopes.

Blasting operations took place on Channel coast NW of France to extend Flamanville Nuclear Power Plant (EPR new generation). The closest operating reactor building was monitored by a 24 remote vibrations transducers network to fulfil, on one hand, the severe environment constraints and satisfy high degree of productivity required by the project, on the other hand. Although these requirements usually are incompatible, this challenge compelled to introduce a seismic modelling technique to optimize blast designs using electronic initiating system. The “Hybrid Seismic Modelling” (MSH) uses blastholes signatures (seismic vibrations records) which are greatly dependent on geology and alteration of rock mass, explosives, charge geometry, blast configuration, and the final excavation shape. In order to respect severe vibrations limits, excavation layout was divided into areas with specific blasting modules - type and number of charges, single charge, initiating sequence. Thanks to this technique, it has been possible to reach lowest blasts vibrations levels and a better productivity compared to classical blasting operation at the same location in the past. After the modelling method presentation - principle and use precautions, technical improvements are reported.

NOTEWORTHY because of the amount of explosives used, the tonnage broken, and the wide range involved both vertically and laterally, was a large underground blast fired last November at the Hidden Creek mine, Anyox, B. C. Stoping methods and mining prac¬tices at the Hidden Creek mine have previously been described in the technical press. Earlier mining methods employed included shrinkage stoping, glory-holing, and "spiral" stoping. The latter especially has been a practice peculiar to the Granby company, having been used for years at its Phoenix mines and later at the Anyox property where conditions as to size of orebodies and strength of ground both in the ore and walls were similar. These methods all leave tremendous excavations supported at key points by pillars and braces that may only be safely mined by big blasts.

The offshore wind industry in the United States is slowly emerging with the recent construction of the first offshore wind farm located off the coast of Rhode Island. The turbines at the Block Island wind farm are supported by piled jacket structures, which historically have been used for much heavier oil and gas platforms. Offshore wind turbines have unique design requirements and the axial behavior of the supporting piles under cyclic loading is important to design. Cyclic degradation along the pile shaft can affect the capacity, deformation, and stiffness performance of the foundation and of the structure as a whole. This paper proposes a strain-based approach to estimate the fatigue (or endurance) limit of a cyclically loaded pile that may be applicable to long-term service loading. The method is applied to an existing load test dataset and the analysis results appear consistent with the observed pile response. INTRODUCTION The demand for renewable energy has been increasing in recent decades and wind power has seen a dramatic increase in popularity. In Europe, as of 2017 there were 4,149 grid-connected offshore wind turbines across 11 countries (windeurope.org), many of which are supported on monopile foundations. It wasn’t until recently (2016) that the first offshore wind farm was constructed in the United States off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island. The project included 5 piled jacket structures founded in terminal moraine deposits. Future offshore wind development along the U.S. eastern seaboard could possibly utilize jacket structures in granular foundation soils. Loads from wave, wind, and turbine rotation induce cyclic loads on the foundation that have on the order of 108 loading cycles over the service life on the structure (Schneider and Senders 2010). Turbines located along the U.S. east coast have the added risk of hurricanes. As shown in Figure 1a, the lateral loads on a jacket structure are transferred primarily as axial compressive and possibly tensile loads on the supporting piles depending on the weight of the structure. The friction along the shaft of the pile can be prone to cyclic degradation, leading to reduced pile capacity and stiffness, and increased deformations. An offshore wind turbine foundation must be designed for a variety of limit states including ultimate, serviceability, and fatigue limit states. For a jacket structure this would include an analysis of the ultimate axial pile capacity, axial stiffness, and axial deformations, all of which can be affected by cyclic loading both under extreme (i.e. storm) conditions as well as long-term service conditions. Axial pile stiffness is needed, for example, to estimate the natural frequencies of the structure as a whole and to assess dynamic and fatigue loads. The structure must be designed such that its natural frequency remains outside the loading frequencies of the waves and turbine blade passing frequencies to avoid resonance. Therefore, prediction of the axial response of the piles is important to the design of these structures.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated data base was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ‘actual’ grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ‘actuals’/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. 2-. 3- and compound-lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

Iron ore is essential in steelmaking but high-grade ores have diminished, making it necessary to turn to low-grade ores, which need further beneficiation to upgrade the iron content. Biobeneficiation techniques such as bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation have proven successful in iron ore processing. Consequently, these methods have emerged as sustainable alternatives to conventional beneficiation. The biobeneficiation processes occur in mild conditions using bioreagents and biosurfactants derived from microbes, and offer a reduction of chemicals used in processing. This potentially offers methods that are relatively energy efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly while tackling the constraints of dwindling high-grade iron ore resources.

Future climate variability and change will impact on mining operations and their attendant communities. To minimise this impact, early and informed risk management is warranted. However, research into the risks posed by climate to the Australian mining industry has so far been limited. We are conducting a systematic study of the mining life-cycle to identify the main areas of vulnerability and adaptive capacity of operations and communities. This project aims to assess what adaptation activities are currently being undertaken within the mining industry and its communities across Australia and to develop a risk management approach that will aid the adaptation of practices in and around the industry, better assuring the security of people, jobs, revenue and the environment under changed or extreme climate conditions. The Canadian mining industry was recently assessed through a similar study, which found that many mining companies perceive a real risk to mining from climate change in the future, despite few companies being actively involved in managing such risk. At a workshop held by CSIRO involving mining specialists, the most vulnerable stage in the mining process in the Australian context was assessed to be production. In particular, impacts on water and energy supplies and also transport and infrastructure were of high concern. Additionally, heat stress on workers and equipment, changes in groundwater flow and increases in geohazards were also identified as important factors in the short and long term if problematic climate events become more extreme or more frequent. Risks in the planning and post-mine stages were also identified. Based on literature reviews and preliminary discussions with mining experts, here we present an initial assessment of the climate adaptation issues relating to mining and its associated communities and describe our future work plans in this area.

A fim de se evitar os danos causados pela corrosão, cresce cada vez mais o uso do aço galvanizado. Durante o processo de galvanização a quente ou por eletrodeposição é gerado um resíduo sólido perigoso conhecido por lama galvânica cujo descarte se trata de um processo oneroso. Sendo assim, as principais rotas de gerenciamento desse resíduo foram levantadas no presente trabalho, visando contribuir com a economia e aumento da sustentabilidade desse setor industrial. Ultimamente a lama galvânica é considerada uma matéria-prima potencial por conter metais com valor comercial presentes em concentrações elevadas, e isso tem estimulado pesquisas de rotas de recuperação desses teores metálicos. Paralelamente, a fim de resolver o problema de gestão do resíduo, estudos buscam rotas alternativas de descarte que visem estabilizar os elementos tóxicos e reutilizar a lama como matéria-prima em outro processo industrial.

"The effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases.Electrokinetic methods were used to elucidate the mechanism of surfactants adsorption and to correlate these findings with the optimum flotation conditions. The polymeric surfactants would reduce the negative values of zeta potential of quartz while the reverse is true for feldspar. After treatment of microcline with HCl, its electrokinetic behavior in the presence of Tritons X surfactants became similar to that of quartz.The obtained results would suggest that separation of quartz from feldspar using nonionic surfactants of octylphenoletoxylated alcohols having shorter oxyethylenic chain length at low pH could be achieved"

For one, the United States is on the horns of dilemma; it must insure a flow of raw materials of industry and world-wide markets in order that the American people may maintain high standards of living, but the commitments of the United States cannot be fulfilled without trimming present standards of comfort and convenience back to the level of perhaps a quarter of a century ago. A way must be found to retreat without anarchy at home as well as abroad. Everything is relative and all things change, and change is the essence of civilization. The Mine Safety and Health Administration. Department of Labor, requires coal mine operators to measure compliance with federal re¬spirable dust exposure standards periodically using approved gravi¬metric samplers. However, the gravimetric approach, with its inher¬ent delays, cannot provide dust concentration data quickly enough to allow on-site correction of inadequate dust control strategies or re¬moval of personnel from harmful environments. Furthermore, alleged tampering with dust samples collected to determine compliance with standards prompted the Secretary of Labor to appoint a special Respirable Dust Task Group to study options to improve monitoring and control of respirable coal mine dust. The Mine Safety and Health Administration's Task Group recommended that the U.S. Bureau of Mines develop a fixed-site monitor that would provide continuous information to the mine worker and mine operator regarding dust levels and the status of compliance with the applicable respirable dust standard. In response to the Mine Safety and Health Administration's request, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating several sensor tech¬nologies for continuously monitoring respirable coal mine dust. One of these technologies is the Rupprecht and Patashnick Co. tapered element, oscillating microbalance. The bureau is in the process of investigating the suitability of using this sensor in the high humidity and vibration environment of underground coal mines. IN the field of mineral resources, today's problems and those we can reasonably expect in the future are so vast that nothing less than world-wide thinking and world-wide planning will suffice. I can imagine nothing more useful for the Institute to do in celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary than to hold this conference on world mineral resources. Mineral resources are the basis of any nation's industrial production. Without expanding industrial production, the high standard of living found in the United States could not exist. Without such a standard of living it would be most unlikely that we should have a high level of culture. The hope of the world, as I see it, depends very largely on a general rise in living standards everywhere, and in the general increase of the levels of culture including a sympathetic understanding of the problems of other nations. For this reason, the proper use of the world's remaining mineral resources must be taken into account in any plans to safeguard the peace of the world. Being as exasperatingly human as human beings always seem to be,. we usually wait until almost too late to begin our plans to stave off an impending disaster. We do this as individuals, as components of particular States or Governments, and as citizens of the world. The Bureau of Mires in its investigations of gas masks for use in mines and allied industries has studied and developed various types of masks for protection against noxious uses and furies that may be present in atmospheres encountered in mines, metallurgical works, chemical and other industries. As a result of these investigations, the Bureau issued a schedule5 of tests under which manufacturer who voluntarily submit masks for examination and test, are issued an approval certificate for masks that meet the Bureau's specifications. In the Bureau's schedule, masks arc classified by types of gases removed, as type A masks for protection against acid gases; B; organic vapor; C, ammonia; D, carbon monoxide; E, smoke, dust, and mist; F, special gases; combination types, and type N, for protection in air against all gases, vapors, and smokes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the physical and chemical tests that were conducted on a type N mask, the protective principles and construction of the essential elements of the canister and attachments, and the uses and limitations of this type of mask. The mask tested is known as the all-service mask, manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa;, and was approved (approval No. 1403) by the Bureau on July 1, 1924, for protection from all classes of poisonous vapors, gases and smokes in air.

Iron and steel slag represent man's most successful attempt to date to profitably utilize a solid waste. Its consumption represents a solution to a solid waste problem and also represents tonnage of natural aggregates that will not have to be mined with concomitant disturbance of the land. Slag has been produced as long as iron has been made; but until a little more than 50 years ago, it was mostly a waste product to be disposed of with as little effort and cost as possible. Huge piles of waste slag were generated over the years of iron and steelmaking. Sporadic use was found for small amounts starting with slag (from Catalan forges) used for road bases by the Roman Empire. The first recorded sustained commercial use was, as is often the case in man's history, for making war. Some profit- conscious munitions maker in the 16th century realized that he could make cannon balls of slag instead of the more precious iron. Other small-volume uses gradually developed: cast building blocks, slag-lime mortars and cements, slag wool, ballast, road base, and, finally, in concrete. But it was not until after World War II that the true potential of blast-furnace slag as a construction aggregate was really recognized. Now nearly all blast-furnace slag produced is used, and much of the earlier stock- piles in the U. S. have been reduced or entirely consumed. Steel slag for aggregate use has been in commerce for only the past 10 years, and use has increased rapidly (10-50% per year) during the past 5 years as blast-furnace slag supplies became depleted. However, much remains to be accomplished in determining character and optimum conditions of use for various types of steel slags before such slags will realize their full use potential. Although slag represents only 2% of construction aggregate materials used in the U.S., its production involves certain features that make its production record far more important than national tonnage figures would indicate. Its source is in iron and steel production and concomitantly slag availability is restricted to those areas where iron or steel is produced. In such areas, it often represents one of the principal aggregates marketed and, because of special properties that make slag a selected aggregate for certain uses, the tonnage imbalance may be overcome by the importance of its contribution to quality or special characteristics of end products. The location and number (Fig. 1) of slag plants handling this annual production is governed by the geographic makeup of the iron producing industry. Prior to the period marked by World War 11, most blast furnaces were in the Great Lakes area-Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Gary, Buffalo, Detroit, Youngstown, and Toledo, with exceptions at Baltimore, Bethlehem, and Birmingham. Since that time, iron and steel facilities have been established in Texas, Utah, and California. Today 85 slag plants in 15 states provide employment for almost 2000 persons. The slag plants also recover almost 4 million tons of slag-encrusted iron each year for return to the blast furnaces. Much of the success in developing uses for slag can be attributed to the efforts of the National Slag Association founded in 1918. Since then, it has conducted numerous field and laboratory investigations to demonstrate the properties and uses for slag and slag products. These investigations have resulted in total recognition of blast-furnace slag as a construction material of consequence. The American Society for Testing & Materials Designation C125 recognizes blast-furnace slag as "the nonmetallic product consisting essentially of silicates and aluminosilicates of
