There are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely in use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a passible demand; nor does it include extra patterns rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns ere, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,—a heavy head, light web and Hanges, and a good angle to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there are thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. "In situ" measurements of the surface heat transfer coefficient in underground airways by K. R. VeST,* B.Se. (Glas.), M.Se. (N.S.W.) (Visitor) Few "in situ" measurements have been made of the surface heat transfer coefficient in mine airways despite the importance of this coefficient in determining the heat flow into the ventilating air. In this paper, the values obtained at various air velocities and the comparisons of these values with theoretical values are given. Examples are also given ofthe errors which would result if rock surface temperatures were obtained by extrapolation from temperatures further into the rock without taking into account the time delay which occurs before a given change in air temperature reaches the points from which extrapolation is carried out.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study to identify the causes of self-heating events beneath the floor of a deep underground coal mine. Mine samples from both heated and unheated areas were examined by various techniques, including visual, microscopic, thermal, chemical, and instrumental tests. The combined results led to the conclusion that pyrite (FeS2) oxidation was the prime cause of the beatings. However, adiabatic oven tests of selected samples did not indicate the effect of the pyrite on the self-heating process, probably because of the experimental conditions. A fast, simple procedure to assess the concentration of pyrite in the mine samples was developed, utilizing the reactivity of the sample with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

Debido a la variabilidad de la competitividad del yacimiento que está formado por skarn y pórfidos, para mejorar el concepto de conminución en Las Bambas el proceso de reducción de tamaño se inició en el manejo de los factores de carga, diseño de mallas de perforación y diseño de voladura del macizo rocoso. La maximización del sistema de molienda SAG se consiguió de manera sostenible con la integración del equipo de voladura en las optimizaciones realizadas en la planta. De este modo, se logró incrementar el procesamiento a 150 Kton/día.

A crescente preocupação com a qualidade da cerâmica vermelha e com o uso racional dos recursos naturais utilizados por ela, tem motivado a diversas pesquisas em busca de uma otimização de seu uso. Atualmente o setor produtivo, localizado no Norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, no município de Campos, conta com mais de 100 cerâmicas que fazem uso de um método empírico para formulação de massa cerâmica, tendo como principal consequência à perda da qualidade de seus produtos, isso e fruto da insuficiência de estudos dos solos em diferentes pontos das jazidas utilizadas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização, através de ensaios de granulometria, Limites de Atterberg e análise química para um conhecimento dos solos a serem utilizados na composição da mistura. Este conhecimento traz maior percepção quanto a algumas dificuldades a serem enfrentadas pelos processos produtivos. Com os resultados encontrados pode-se dar algumas diretrizes iniciais para uma melhor adequação na formulação das misturas, diminuindo o empirismo e aumentando a qualidade dos produtos.

A ArcelorMittal Tubarão (AMT) possui desde o início de operação os recursos hídricos como uma das questões centrais na estratégia de sustentabilidade e estabilidade operacional para sua produção. A gestão hídrica na AMT, dentre outras ações, garante que 96,5% de toda a água captada na usina venha do mar. Além disso, possui investimento contínuo em reusos internos, busca de fontes alternativas de água e combate ao desperdício e vazamentos. A condução dessa gestão hídrica, contribuiu de forma significativa para atravessarmos em 2015, a pior seca que o estado do Estado do Espírito Santo atravessou nos últimos 40 anos. Todos esses esforços resultaram na redução expressiva do volume de água doce utilizado na AMT, reduzindo o consumo específico de 4,2 m³/t em 2014, para 2,5 m³/t em 2018. Como resultado de um plano robusto de gestão hídrica, um projeto arrojado e inovador, pioneiro no Brasil e primeiro do grupo no mundo será realizado na empresa, a planta de dessalinização de água do mar. Com investimentos da ordem de R$ 50 milhões, a unidade começará a ser construída em 2019, com prazo de conclusão em dois anos. Produzirá até 500 m³/h de água industrial para o sistema de água da usina, proporcionando uma importante fonte alternativa ao consumo de água doce.

No processo de implementação de uma nova planta industrial, a disciplina de automação, responde pela integração dos equipamentos de forma a permitir a operação segura e produtiva dos dispositivos envolvidos, com um mínimo de intervenção humana. Em projetos de grande porte, temos muitos fornecedores de equipamentos mecânicos com diversas formas de contratação e estabelecer um padrão único para o sistema de automação, tornase uma atividade complexa, porém, fundamental para o sucesso do projeto. Por outro lado, o sistema de controle é sempre o último a ser montado e pode provocar atrasos no comissionamento dos equipamentos, se não estiver devidamente pronto, ou mesmo ser pressionado para compensar atrasos ocorridos nas etapas anteriores da construção. Nesse contexto, a engenharia de automação precisa estar concluída, os materiais precisam estar disponíveis e a mão de obra pronta para atendimento no exato momento das necessidades. Mediante o uso de uma estratégia de contratação antecipada do pacote de automação, na modalidade MAC, onde apenas uma empresa responde pelo fornecimento global do sistema de automação e instrumentação, reduzindo as interfaces envolvidas, buscando a participação do fornecedor nas fases iniciais da engenharia e com a elaboração de um planejamento consistente de recursos, foi possível atender as demandas da construção e comissionamento, dentro do cronograma e custo previstos para o projeto. Os resultados alcançados pela disciplina de automação e controle, aliados ao resultado global do projeto, sinalizam a assertividade das ações realizadas, trazendo benefícios consideráveis e reduzindo o risco na implementação do projeto P4P.

"The 181 Fremont Tower will be an 800-foot high-rise with a 60-foot deep basement located in a dense urban part of downtown San Francisco. The design and construction methods of the subsurface elements navigated a variety of site constraints such as loose fill and soft estuarine soils, shallow groundwater, contaminants, historic obstructions, small work area, proximity of adjacent buildings, and the on-going excavation and build-out of the adjacent Transbay Transit Center (TTC) train box. Design of the approximately 260-foot-deep drilled shafts (some of the deepest foundations ever constructed in San Francisco) was proven by a full-scale load test that provided unique data on the frictional capacity of the deep soil and Franciscan Complex bedrock in the region. Design and construction of the shoring system for the 5-story basement excavation was exceptionally challenging because of the on-going construction for the TTC. To allow for flexibility during construction, hydraulic rams were placed in a transfer waler along the shared TTC shoring wall that could adjust the forces transferred through to the TTC excavation if required. Open and steady communication between the shoring engineer, the geotechnical engineer, and the shoring/foundation contractor was crucial in order to satisfy the complex constraints of this site.INTRODUCTIONThe 181 Fremont Tower is a new build mixed-use tower, currently under construction in the dense urban core of the South of Market District of San Francisco, California. This high-rise will consist of 54 above ground floors with the roof level 700 feet high. Atop the roof will be some architectural features including a spire that will top out at just over 800 feet, which will make it the second tallest building in San Francisco upon completion.The tower is being developed by Jay Paul Company and the architectural design is by Heller Manus. The structural engineer and geotechnical engineer for the project is Arup North America Ltd (Arup). The shoring designer is Brierley Associates (Brierley). The general contractor is Level 10 Construction (Level 10) and the specialty foundation contractor and excavation contractor is Malcolm Drilling Co., Inc (Malcolm)."

Mintek has been involved in extensive test work since the early 1990s on the recovery of nickel and cobalt from leach liquors saturated in calcium, using synergistic solvent extraction systems. During this period the Nicksyn? reagent was developed, optimized, commercially manufactured, and tested by Tati Nickel on a demonstration plant for more than 2800 operating hours. Efficient recovery of nickel without the co-extraction of calcium, thus avoiding gypsum formation in the extraction and stripping circuits, was illustrated. This synergistic system was recently evaluated on a laboratory scale for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from synthetic lateritic sulphate leach liquor containing about 3 g/L nickel, 0.5 g/L cobalt, 0.7 g/L manganese, 20 g/L magnesium, and with calcium at saturation. Extraction and stripping parameters were determined for this feed liquor and are discussed in this paper.

Slagging gasifiers are used to produce chemicals and/or electricity from feedstocks such as coal and/or petroleum coke. A gasifier environment includes pressures from 400 to 1000 psi, temperatures from 1250-1550°C, are cyclic, reducing gases of CO and 112, and molten ash that interacts with the refractory liner materials. The high Cr2O3 refractory liners of gasifiers fail within 3 to 24 months. Gasifier users seek materials with increased reliability and service life. This paper discusses causes of refractory failure and efforts to increase refractory service life.

The paper "Weld Notch Affects on Pulley and Belt Conveyor Reliability" has done an excellent job of describing theoretical fatigue and fracture mechanics methods used in modern weld design. From this foundation, we intend to further detail areas previously discussed and present new research in the application of these principles to pulley weldment life prediction. Affects of changes in alternating stress range, mean stress, and residual stress have been investigated using controlled laboratory fatigue tests on a pulley weldment. Comparisons between these results, weld codes, and theoretical fatigue predictions will be made and discussed.

The problems connected with deep mine hoisting and the increasing complexity of this process can be analysed through the application of such mathematical tools as stochastic modelling to study the effectiveness, reliability or safety of hoist methods. To relate these theoretical investigations to real practice, knowledge about components, their stochastic nature and stochastic order of appearance is necessary. This paper presents results obtained during the ten-year (1976-85) period of research undertaken in the Polish mining industry by the Mining Mechanisation Institute of the Silesian Technical University, Gliwice, Poland.

Prompt neutron activation probe (PNAP) was evaluated to determine chemical composition of phosphate rock slurry in-situ. The technique was able to precisely analyze Ca, Si and H using a 252Cf source. Direct measurement of P and Mg was not accurate due to interference by the rare earth elements associated with the Florida Phosphate Rock. The solids loading, particle size distribution and flotation reagents present in the slurry had no significant effect on the accuracy of the measurements. The technique was found to be reliable also under industrial conditions.

The behavior of gold particles on a spiral was studied using radioactive gold tracers. The method allowed the effects of particle size, particle shape, pulp density, feed rate and splitter settings to be studied. Although the method has been successfully applied to other gravity concentrators, it was found that reliable results were more difficult to obtain on the spiral. However, these preliminary results show that, with suitable precautions, the technique is capable of providing valuable information, unobtainable from conventional studies, that could be used to better optimize spiral performance.

Rehabilitation has been very effective in the short to medium term in providing a cost effective and reliable means of containing the side effects of land disturbance. However, there is still insufficient data to critically evaluate the sucess of rehabilitation in the long term. There is an urgent need to develop objective criteria to monitor the sucess of rehabilitation. The aim of rehabilitation in Australia has traditionally been to return disturbed land to natural vegetation compatible with the surrounding area. This objective has often been accepted instinctively without adequately addressing alternatives.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. A relatively inexpensive and reliable method of using liquid phase tracers to aid in the solution of material balance problems is introduced. The method is of value in situations where one is required to calculate a material balance around a process that has the operating appearance of a "blender" or "splitter" with respect to the available slurry sample data. The paper briefly reviews material balance development and tracer applications in mineral processing, introduces the problem to he addressed, and provides both theoretical and industrial evidence establishing the potential of the method.

In early 1987 Minproc acquired a license from the inventor to engineer and construct acid plants incorporating the Fattinger technology. The process offers a simple and reliable method of producing sulphuric acid from metallurgical off gases at significantly lower capital and operating costs than the more familiar contact process. The process also offers the simultaneous production of nitric acid, if the NOx content of the off gases is high enough. A development of this latter process has other applications within the minerals industry, particularly in conjunction with refractory gold ore preoxidation.

An investigation of the feasibility of shielding low-voltage trailing cables in underground coal mines is described. Both laboratory and under¬ground installation results are presented. The main objective of shielding is to reduce the electrical shock hazard; however, several problems will be encountered by mine operators who install shielded cables. Parameters related to such items as purchasing, splicing, troubleshooting, safety, and reliability are discussed. Some of these problems can be minimized by changes in cable constructions and shuttle-car reeling-device components. Both SH-C and SH-D constructions are considered.
