One of the greatest improvements in drilling equipment has been the development of hard facing metals which are welded by electricity or by acetylene to form a facing which protects the steel of the bit from abrasive wear. The main desirable characteristics of hard facing metals are resistance to abrasive wear, resistance to shock and perfect bond with underlying metal. Resistance to abrasion offered by various metals shows many anomalies. Compounds containing carbon, silicon and boron are the most important hard substances. Carbon, as diamond, silicon carbide and especially the carbides of iron, chromium and tungsten are the outstanding hard products in common use. Tungsten carbide is probably the most commonly used. It is made in the electric furnace and it is important to get the right amount of carbon and the correct crystalline structure in order to obtain the greatest hardness and greatest resistance to abrasion. It may be obtained in three main divisions: wrought, cast and casehardened. Insert hard metals are common. The method of application varies, but it is generally welded to the bit, placed in channels or in drilled holes and covered with a hard surfacing metal. Robinson' has given a very complete article on the use of inserts. Gregg and Küttner2 has discussed the metallography of tungsten carbides and given a good bibliography of the subject,. The time and expense of large-scale testing, together with variations in results, led to the development of a laboratory testing machine for determining the abrasive-resisting qualities of different metals. "Three mol% Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) was prepared by a sol-gel synthesis technique using zirconium tetrachloride and hydrated yttrium chloride precursors. After drying and annealing at 823K, the particle size was in the range 10 to 20 nm. The zirconia powder was sintered using a uniaxial hot press at an applied stress of 20 to 40 MPa. One hour, isothermal sintering was performed in air after initial heating at 50K/min. Theoretical density was obtained at densification temperatures above 1498K. After sintering, grain coarsening characteristics were studied using constant heating rate anneals followed by quenching, based on a model for grain coarsening in a linear heating rate cycle. The microstructural change was studied using SEM and TEM and the phases were determined using x-ray diffraction.IntroductionThe ability to sinter nanocrystalline materials to full density several hundred degrees below the normal sintering temperatures is one reason for their current interest. [1-5] Yttria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) of grain size of about 300 nm has exhibited superplasticity, with elongations as large as 800%.[6-7] Fine grain size is critical for superplasticity. Retention of the fine grain size during sintering of nanocrystalline powder is important if a material is to exhibit superplasticity or to exhibit physical or mechanical properties associated with the ultra fine structure. This paper investigates the sintering behavior and the grain coarsening characteristics ofnanocrystalline YSTZ.Techniques for synthesizing nanocrystalline materials have been studied in great detail earlier. [8-12] The techniques used to synthesize nanocrystalline zirconia include alkoxide synthesis [9], the chloride method [11], the peroxide method [13] and the acetone-toluene method. [13] In this paper the method used in the synthesis of zirconia is the chloride technique. With this precipitation technique, either zirconium chloride or oxychloride and a corresponding yttrium salt or even pure yttria are used."

Abstract - Ore reserve estimation, based on sparse drill hole data, was conducted for a placer gold property in Nome, Alaska. A problem with sparse data is that random subdivision of the data into modelling and evaluation subsets (as is commonly done) becomes a problem, as random selection may result in biased/skewed subsets. Therefore, a technique that combined data segmentation with genetic algorithms (GA) was applied to divide the samples into three equivalent subsets: training, validation and testing. Data segmentation was done on the basis of the distribution of gold values. Neural network and a variety of kriging techniques were used to estimate gold grades. A multi-layer feed forward neural network along with "early/quick stop" training was used for neural network modelling. A comparative evaluation of kriging and neural network methods was then performed. The results revealed that neural network was generally superior to the kriging techniques for gold grade estimation in the Nome deposit.

A detailed description is given of an experimental method for determining relative permeability of porous media to gas. Results are presented for natural and synthetic cores. The experimental data for two and three phase systems are compared. The reproduci-bility of the equilibrium gas saturation ii demonstrated and the effects due to a variation in rate of gas flow are discussed. An attempt is made to correlate total permeability and rock textural factors with relative permeability to gas. Capillary pressure curves obtained simultaneously with the relative permeability curves are shown to be equivalent to those obtained in conventional displacement cells. INTRODUCTION The advances in petroleum reservoir technology during the past decade have made increasingly apparent the desirability of a simple, rapid, reliable metliod for obtaining relative permeability data on small cores. Such data are needed in order to study fluid mechanics in porous media and for the more refined reservoir behavior prediction calculations now under development. The use of compressed air or gas in oil wells for raising crude oil to the surface has, within the last year, become a dominant factor In production engineering. Previous application of this principle was largely confined to oil wells that had been pumping for a considerable length of time. In the Seminole area, the gas-air lift has been applied to wells imniediately after natural flow has ceased and in some cases while the wells were still flowing. This early application of the gas-air lift has been watchcd with intense interest by the petroleum industry, both with respect to methods of application and mechanical installations and to the effects on immediate and ultimate production. Methods of Application The Seminole pool at its inception contained sufficient gas associated with the oil to cause natural flow. As no frce gas was found in the main productive horizon, the Wilcox sand, all the gas present was dissolved in the oil, hence the natural flowing life was short, rarely lasting over 45 days. When natural flow ceased, high fluid levels were common, and as depth and crookedness of holes were obstacles to efficient pumping, the gas-air lift was used almost exclusively in raising the oil to the surface. Because of the high gravity of the oil, 41" A. P. I., and its high gasoline content, and also because of the desire to obtain production before offset wells became productive, quantity of production was the aim of the operators and a method of flow was used whereby this aim could be fulfilled. One of the outstanding features of this method consisted in flowing the wells through the annular space between the tubing and rasing. By this means a greater quantity of fluid could be handled than by flowing through the tubing of the size in ordinary use. Wells that would produce only a few hundred barrels on the pump were by this rnethod made to produce as high as 7000 bbl. on the lift. A few days or wreks of production at that rate meant a large recovery of oil. Casing of 636 in. diameter was commonly used as a production string with a 5 3/16-in. liner set on top of the oil sand. (written discussion?).-Dr. Brokaw has evidently given a great deal of time and study to this phenomenon and his conclusions seem sound and logical. .Mr. Lee Hager was probably the first geologist of repute to attach any great importance to the occurrence of paraffin dirt in connection with the Gulf Coast oil-producing salt domes. The writer has been reliably informed that through his discussion, the idea was promulgated that the presence of this so-called paraffin dirt was one of the most important and reliable indications of the presence of an oil-producing salt dome. Despite very strong evidence to the contrary, Hager evidently still has considerable confidence in this theory, as brought forth in his discussion1 of Dr. Brokaw's paper. Halter here gives all the paraffin dirt occurrences known to him, and adds, "Fifteen of these localities, including practically all of the greatest fields, have produced oil in some quantity." . The acceptance of the list of occurrences as submitted by Hager depends upon what material we are justified in including under the term "paraffin dirt." If we agree to a broad classification, whereby paraffin dirt is. to include all spongy, earthy, decomposed, vegetable material, or spongy soil impregnated with the same, then Haggler's list will have to be not only accepted but perhaps enlarged. On the other hand, if we confine ourselves to a strict interpretation of the substance known as paraffin dirt, based .upon typical occurrences, general understanding, and application, several of Hager's occurrences will be seriously questioned by many geologists. Mineral sands are different to almost any other commodity; however, it shares similarities with other commodity types, such as the importance of quality constraints of iron ore and coal or the importance of physical properties of diamonds. The mineral sands industry consists of two principal product streams; titanium dioxide minerals û in the form of rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene, and zircon. The principal valuable heavy minerals (VHM) include ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon. Variations of other titanium minerals occur between the end members of ilmenite and rutile, including pseudo rutile and anatase. Most mineral sands deposits are found in unconsolidated fossil shorelines several hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres and occasionally hundreds of kilometres inland from the present coastline. Mineral sands orebodies essentially fall into two categories based on the mode of deposition: alluvial or aeolian. Alluvial deposits are further split into marine beach placers (or strandlines) and lacustrine heavy mineral (HM) accumulations. Exploration for mineral sands involves the positive identification of key criteria leading to the focus of exploratory surface sampling, augering and drilling. Assaying is primarily focused around determining the percentage of HM contained within a given sample. Other results of interest include clay fines, sand and oversize. Metallurgical/mineralogical assessment is often undertaken via laboratory scale bench tests that replicate the wet concentration and dry mill processing routes. The most critical component in resource assessment for mineral sands is about quantifying HM grade, then mineralogical assemblage and then quality of those mineral species. This will determine whether a mineral sand final product is marketable or not. Mining of mineral sands is conducted either wet or dry. Wet methods are generally preferred for large tonnage, unconsolidated and low clay orebodies. Where ground conditions are hard and orebodies are small, high grade and discontinuous, dry mining techniques are generally employed. Concentration of mineral sands from the primary ore is carried out in two sections; wet, utilising sizing and gravity differentiation between HM, VHM, clay and quartz, and dry, exploiting the magnetic, electrostatic and to a lesser extent specific gravity (SG) properties of the minerals of interest. Mineral sands exploration, mining and processing faces the same operating challenges as the rest of the resource sector. Added to this are the issues that are unique to mineral sands and to which the industry devotes considerable resources to developing solutions.

In many cases traditional support designs cover the many variations in ground conditions and bolt performance by a conservative factor of safety. The result is that most bolts are ineffectual most of the time and yet the response to occasional roof collapses is an even more conservative design. The probabilistic analysis presented in this paper takes several important parameters of a support design into account such as span, bolt strength, bolt length, water pressure, seismic accelerations, joint orientation, bed thickness and joint strength and allows the effect of variations in these parameters to be evaluated simultaneously. The analysis demonstrates the application of the probabilistic approach to both blocky, wedge-dominated conditions and bedded deposits dominated by laminations. All mine excavations have a designed stand-up time. By taking into account of the possible variations in the design parameters explicitly, it is possible to produce a support system designed to ensure stability over a given period of time. Rather than use a factor of safety criterion, the approach uses a percentage reliability or probability of failure. By understanding the probability of failure of the support system, it is possible to improve the performance of ground support without any increase in cost or conversely to decrease the cost while maintaining the performance of ground support. This approach reduces reliance on empirical experience and leads to a better understanding of the key factors that influence stability and can provide a much more accurate and optimized assessment of support design and performance. The result is a more cost-effective support system and we hope that a broader application of this approach to ground support in underground mines will lead to a greater acceptance in the industry of probabilistic analyses and of terms such as Probability of Failure and Reliability of Support.

The abandoned Manitou mine site covers an area of approximately 190 ha near Val d?Or, Quebec. This old site has been generating acid mine drainage for several decades. In 2006, a partnership was established between the Quebec Ministry of Ressources Naturelles (MRN) and Agnico-Eagle Mines to reclaim the Manitou site using tailings from the nearby Goldex mine. These neutral tailings were to be deposited on top of the Manitou site. An extensive study was performed to evaluate specific reclamation scenarios to control acid mine drainage using Goldex tailings as cover material. The article first describes the global approach used for this evaluation, which includes in-situ hydrogeological monitoring, tailings characterization, laboratory column tests, and numerical modelling. Of the thirteen column tests, three were conducted to evaluate the parameters affecting the performance of covers made of Goldex tailings placed over the spillage area of the Manitou site. Geochemical and hydrogeological parameters were assessed during the leaching column tests for almost two years. The tests aimed at evaluating the effect of water table level and monolayer cover thickness on the overall performance. The testing procedure involved monthly leaching and measurement of geochemical parameters. Results indicate that water table position is the most important factor affecting the monolayer cover performance to control AMD. Based on these results, it was established that the water table must be located near the interface between the Goldex and Manitou tailings to effectively reduce AMD generation. Cover thickness also has an impact on cover performance, which is however less significant than the water table position. The testing scenario with a water table located at the interface with a one-meter Goldex tailings cover showed progressive improvement in effluent quality.

Kerosine, fuel oil No. 2, vapor oil, and fuel oil No. 6 were separated into general hydrocarbon fractions by ion exchange chromatography and adsorption chromatography. The collecting properties of these fractions were evaluated by flotation of molybdenum and copper minerals from a natural chalcopyrite ore. Paraffin fractions and aromatic fractions of low polarity produced the best molybdenum recoveries. Selective flotation of molybdenite from copper sulfide minerals was not possible with any of the chromatographic fractions.

"Rocks of the Whitewater Group (Aphebian age) oc ithin the Sudbury Basin and consist of three formations rre, from oldest to youngest: Onaping, heterolithic breccias lus an igneous-textured component; Onwatin, argillite and siltstone; and Chelmsford, greywacke with minor argillite with siltstone. Mineralization in these rocks is as follows:1) Sulphides are disseminated throughout the Onaping Formation. Pyrrhotite, the major sulphide mineral, occurs mainly as fragments; other sulphides are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite and marcasite.2) Zn, Pb, Cu, Ag and A u mineralization in the Vermilion member, a carbonate-chert unit near the base of the Onwatin Formation (Vermilion and Errington mines).3) Pyrite and minor base metals in the Onwatin Formation .4) Mineralized quartz veins, located at or near the base of the Onaping Formation, include such deposits as Moore Lake (Pb, Zn and Ag), Foisey (Zn, Pb), Papineau (Cu, Au and Co) and Proulx (Pb, Zn, and Cu). Quartz-carbonate veins in a meta-gabbro sill contain Cu, Zn, As and Au. Material from quartz veins from two former ""gold mines"" (Gordon Lake and Creighton) yielded no Au values.5) Anthraxolite veins in the Onwatin Formation .The mineral occurrences can be explained in term of either the volcanic theory or meteorite-impact theory of basin formation. According to the latter theory, the sulphide fragments in the Onaping Formation may have been formed by the brecciation of sulphide-rich pods located in the upper mantle and at the base of the transient crater; some of the sulphides may have been derived from target rocks of the Huronian Supergroup. The Vermillion-Errington deposits may represent sedimentary exhalative deposits of the Remac type; mineral-rich brines, trapped at the base of the transient crater, rose upward and precipitated the mineralized carbonate-chert under reducing conditions. These conditions continued throughout the deposition of the upper Onwatin Formation but pyrite was the only sulphide that formed.The quartz veins were emplaced during the time of basin deformation. Metamorphism remobilized and concentrated carbonaceous material in the Onwatin Formation 10 form the anthraxolite veins."

Thermal pretreatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The effect of pretreatment using conventional and dielectric heating followed by quenching on the fracture characteristics of a number of single and multiphase brittle materials has been investigated using the Ultrafast Load Cell. It has been observed that very significant reductions in both fracture energies and the material integrity (damage) were achieved by heating followed by water quenching.

This paper describes the MillMapper technology developed for condition monitoring of liners and other operational parameters in grinding mills used for mineral comminution, by presenting a case study of its application. MillMapper provides maintenance engineers, operations managers and process and plant metallurgists with quantitative, accurate and reliable condition monitoring data for informed decision making regarding the maintenance and metallurgical aspects of such mills. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanners for the capture of three-dimensional surface representations inside a mill during a shutdown so as to determine shell, feed and discharge liner thickness at a resolution of several million data points, a procedure that nominally takes five minutes to complete. Once several data sets over time have been collected inside a mill, MillMapper can be used for liner wear, liner wear zone, liner weight, ball charge volume, ball charge weight and intelligent profile tracking over time. Liner tracking in combination with site defined reline and failure criteria and with throughput tonnage data is utilised for change out prediction of each separate liner segment type.

The calibrated thermal IR data of part of Cambay Basin is used to determine surface temperatures and to detect the heat flow. Applying the conductive heat flow continuation technique, the three dimensional configuration of the hydrocarbon bearing reservoir was defined. The zone delineated by the present study coincides with the oil-bearing structures inferred by seismic survey. The results indicate the possibility of the technique as an effective tool in hydrocarbon exploration.

The mine disaster last November in northern West Virginia has compelled the coal mining industry to take a closer look at the methods of transporting and applying rockdust. The USBM has indicated they would like to see a minimum of 80% incombustble in the back entries and want rockdust to be maintained to within 40 feet of the face at all times. With today's high rate of advance of mining machines it will be necessary to apply dust in the immediate returns continuously and the working places mutt have dust applied during the operating shift. The inspectors have become more demanding in requiring clean-up of coal and coal dust in the working place before rockdust is applied and are insisting on better clean-up and better rockdust applications along belt conveyors. Maintaining a constant application of rockdust in the back entries can be done with a Trickle-Duster. The machine is designed with hopper capacities of either 400 or 1,000 pounds of dust. The discharge rate of dust being fed through 1-1/2 inch diameter hose can be adjusted from 1/2 to 5 pounds per minute. The hose is extended into the return through the last open breakthrough and the return air carries the rockdust along w th the coal dust, depositing them uniformly on rib, roof and bottom.

In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to be done, wet or dry or a combination?
