THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

"Selective dispersion-flocculation is considered to be an effective process for the beneficiation of ultrafine particles. This process is based on the preferential adsorption of a flocculant on the mineral particles to be flocculated, leaving rest of the mineral suspended. It has been successfully implemented at plant scales for the beneficiation of ultrafine particles of iron ores, for which conventional methods such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation do not work efficiently. However, the key element responsible for the success of any selective flocculation process is the appropriate choice of the flocculant used for achieving the desired selectivity. At our lab, we are working on design and development of such selective reagents for mineral processing applications, including the beneficiation of iron ore slimes, using a combined molecular modeling and experimental approach. In this study we have employed density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the interaction energies and explain the interaction mechanisms of chitosan with the main minerals present in iron ore slimes, namely, hematite [a-Fe2O3], goethite [a-FeO(OH)], gibbsite [a-Al(OH)3] and kaolinite [Al2Si2O5(OH)4]. The magnitudes of the computed interaction energies follow the trend: Hematite > Goethite > Gibbsite ~ Kaolinite Al-OH terminated > Kaolinite Si-O terminated Analysis of the optimized geometries and electronic structures reveals that the O & N atoms of chitosan molecule form coordinate bonds with surface Fe-atoms of hematite while only weak hydrogen bonds are formed in the case of goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite surfaces thus explaining reasons behind the stronger interactions with the hematite surface. The theoretical findings were validated by performing selective flocculation experiments using chitosan as a flocculant. The selective flocculation experimental results show that a final concentrate of ~60% Fe can be obtained from a feed containing 53.13% Fe with Fe recovery of 74%. The mineral estimation in the obtained concentrate indicated that hematite and goethite are recovered in concentrate while gibbsite and kaolinite are rejected in the tails. These observations were consistent with our theoretical findings. Our work highlights the promising role molecular modeling techniques such as DFT can play in the design and development of selective reagents for beneficiation of alumina-rich iron ore slimes."

IN the early days of concrete construction, the question of quality of sand or gravel to be used as aggregate in concrete was given little or no consideration. If the construction engineer had sufficient quantity for his structure within a reasonable distance, he was contented and gave no thought to the possibility that the material might have adverse physical, chemical, or thermal properties which could cause future deterioration of his concrete and possible failure of his structure. Today a very different situation exists. With the building of larger and larger concrete structures, with a longer and longer life expectancy, the quality of the aggregate material has become of major importance. Even in small concrete structures aggregate quality cannot be passed off lightly and the quality of the aggregate must be such as to give the anticipated life without costly maintenance. The first question to arise in the selection of an aggregate is what makes a sand or gravel suitable or unsuitable for use in concrete, and how can its quality be judged. No one rock type can be depended upon to furnish sound durable material in all instances. Granitic rocks, for example, make very satisfactory aggregates in some cases, but they are among the most unsuitable of materials when they are fractured, weathered, or highly micaceous. Limestones make excellent concrete aggregates on the one hand, and on the other they may be unsound and lack durability if they contain appreciable clay, they may have a harmful chemical reaction with the cement if they contain amorphous silica, or they may have thermal characteristics which make them highly unsuitable for use in concrete. Each rock, gravel, or sand must be proved on its own merits for the particular job under consideration. The selection of suitable aggregate materials may be divided into two major phases, the geological phase which is carried on largely in the field, and the testing phase which of course is a laboratory problem; both are important. Very often the geological phase alone is sufficient for the selection of satisfactory aggregates for minor structures but for major structures both phases must be thoroughly investigated. Geological Phase In the southwest part of the country nearly every major rock type, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary, may be found with all imaginable intermediate phases and in all imaginable stages of alteration. Frequently very different rock types, different as to geological age, composition, and condition occur very close together. Alluvium and stream-bed sands and gravels will consist of many different rock types and even ledge rocks may vary radically as to texture and composition within the area of a quarry site. Some of the rocks make suitable aggregate materials whereas others are highly deleterious in concrete. Too often the good and the bad occur together and more than ordinary caution is required in aggregate selection. Aggregate Sources: Concrete aggregates are usually obtained from stream-bed sands and gravels or from ledge rocks. Each has certain favorable and unfavorable characteristics and it is sometimes necessary to investigate both types to determine the most suitable source for a specific structure. Stream Beds: The predominant sources of aggregate materials in southern California and Arizona are stream beds. Vast quantities of sands and gravels are brought from the mountain ranges by the rivers during times of flood but most of these streams are dry a large part of the time and hence these deposits make easily accessible sources of aggregate materials. At the Deer Trail Mine, interest in recovering noble metals from oxide ore and tailings oxide ore with 6.0/1.0 g/t Au and 200/140 g/t Ag respectively has led to metallurgic studies focused on finding an adequate treatment for these materials. Using cyanide leaching, the silver/gold recoveries from oxide ore and oxide tailings were 39%/95% and 36%/96%, respectively. Since these recoveries were less than spectacular for silver, it was decided to explore a non-cyanide leaching process that would extract silver and gold better. Based on previous research the possibility of using aqua regia in combination with sulfuric acid was evaluated. On a laboratory scale, variables such as mineralogical composition, concentration of reagents, dissolved oxygen, reaction time, pH and temperature were evaluated. Under optimal conditions it was possible to achieve >65% silver recovery and >85% gold recovery for both oxide ore and tailings.

Data on worldwide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs is collected annually by the Geophysical Activity Committee of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data is obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations (which are) known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections, namely ground methods, airborne methods and research. In 1968, 515 questionnaires were circulated throughout the non-Communist world and 283 replies were received which is a 55% return. A 67% return was received from the U. S. organizations surveyed so the statistics quoted in this report for the United States are reasonably reliable. This report is published in condensed form, but with emphasis on the United States statistics, with the permission of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. It was presented at the 39th Annual International Meeting of the SEG in Calgary, Alberta, on September 15, 1969. Worldwide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1968 with total expenditures of United States $41.4 million, compared lo $32.3 million in 1967, representing a 28%, increase. The expenditure distribution by area and type of activity is shown in the graph on page 64. In terms of money spent, ground geophysical surveys accounted for 49% of the total, airborne survey's 36% and research 15%. The percentage of the money spent on ground geophysical surveys fell by approximately 7% from 1967, that for airborne surveys, increased by 5%, and for research the amount increased by 2%. Industry accounted for 79°1% of the total monies spent on mining geophysical activity in the world in 1968 and governments and universities 21 o%.

The microbial-mediated recovery of valuable metals locked in mining wastes presents an economical alternative to conventional hydrometallurgical processes. The present study investigated the bioleaching response of a low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite tailings (0.6 wt% Ni) and an upgraded pyrrhotite tailings (1 wt% Ni) produced by Vale Base Metals in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, with the ultimate aim of maximizing Ni recovery. The initial part of the study focused on the bacterial adaptive evolution protocol, by repeatedly sub-culturing an indigenous culture from an acid mine drainage site on 2% (w/v) pyrrhotite tailings. The results showed that the extent of Ni dissolution is positively correlated with microbial activity. Microbial profiling revealed A. ferroxidans to be the dominant member of the microbial consortium. The enriched culture was used for optimizing the growth medium by varying the concentration of essential growth nutrients. Finally, an aerated biotic and abiotic leach of a 10% (w/v) upgraded pyrrhotite tailings with and without pH control, showed a higher recovery of Ni in the pH controlled experiments. These results demonstrate that a high concentration of the oxidant Fe3+ in solution promotes the dissolution of Ni. Furthermore, the sulphide conversion into So was found to be higher in the pH controlled experiments (32%), relative to the experiment without pH control (10%).

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

EVERY user of steel should ask himself whether or not he is taking full advantage of the discoveries of the steel metallurgists during the last few years, or is merely buying grades that looked to be the best five or ten years ago for various specific purposes and have since proved perfectly satisfactory in his plant. If he has not kept abreast of the times, then it is probable that something better has been developed, or something just as good that costs less. Though this article will have to do with steel for high-temperature applications primarily, marked advances have been made in steels for other purposes as well.

This paper offers an algorithm to determine the optimal panel size with the objective of minimizing the overall stripping cost. The approach is presented both in analytical form for regular layers of coal and overburden, and in graphical form for the cases of irregular and multiple coal seams. When the optimal panel width needs to be changed due to some circumstance, we prove in general that increasing the panel width is better than reducing it in both economics and operational efficiency.

Though coal has been mined in this country for more than a century, no systematic effort was ever successfully made to ascertain the total amount produced. The production of the Cumberland Basin, Md., and the shipments from the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, have been placed upon record, thanks to the intelligence and foresight of Mr. C. Slack in the former case, and to the late Mr. B. Bannan in the latter. For some of the years between 1822 and 1842, the production of the Richmond Basin was reported by Mr. R. C. Taylor, but since that date till the author undertook this work it was impossible to obtain any statement of the production of this field. A few of the newer fields, such as that of Mt. Diablo, Cal., have been fully reported, and a few of the newer States have also had this service performed by some intelligent private individuals; but no statistics of coal production have ever been collected either by the State or General Government, if we except the returns for the years 1869—70 of the census report. During the year 1875, by great exertions, I succeeded in obtaining, and July 3d, 1875, gave in the Engineering and Mining Journal what, " though not an accurate statement of our coal production," was " by far the most full and reliable that had ever been published." Though that report showed the production of bituminous coal to be 23,630,094 gross tons, or about six million tons more than had ever before been reported, it was in reality two and a half million tons below the actual output. THIS note reports the results of some attempts to metastably extend the primary solid solubilities of tin, antimony, and silicon in silver by rapidly quenching these binary alloys from the melt. The procedures employed for alloy preparation, quenching, and Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction measurements have been described elsewhere. The lattice parameters obtained for the fcc structures in Ag-Sn and Ag-Sb alloys are presented in Fig. 1, together with the results of Owen and Roberts.4 Alloy compositions are believed to be within ± 0.2 at. pct on the basis of negligible weight losses during preparation and reproducibility of the lattice spacings. Diffraction lines from hcp phases were also detected: the relative visual intensities of the fcc (200) and hcp (10.2) lines were estimated as shown in Table I. The intensities were m for the (200) and w for the (10.2) in a quenched 13.6 at. pct Sn alloy: a lattice spacing for the fcc structure could not be reliably obtained, however. As seen from Fig. 1, the lattice parameters vary linearly with composition up to 8., at. pct Sb and 13." at. pct Sn, respectively, which may be compared with the maximum equilibrium solid solubilities5 of 7.2 at. pct Sb and 11.5 at. pct Sn, respectively. The presence of the hcp phases, which were found together with the fcc phases, is a consequence of the competition1,3 in the nucleation and growth processes during solidification. Both the fcc and hcp phases must be of the same composition for those alloys in the range where lattice parameters increase linearly with solute concentration. Despite much effort with quenched alloys of several silicon concentrations, it has not been possible to obtain lattice spacings of sufficient precision to establish the variation of lattice parameter with composition or the maximum metastable solid solubility: the equilibrium data5 suggest little primary solid solubility of silicon in silver. For alloys containing less than 16 at. pct Si, the Si (111) diffraction line was not observed. For alloys containing 10 to 25 at. pct Si, faint low-angle lines were detected and these could be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2). and (10.1) reflections of an hcp structure with a = 2.87 + 3A. c = 4.52 ± 3A, and c/a = 1.57 ± 2. The 16 at. pct Si alloy was quenched to, and examined at. liquid nitrogen temperatures without any change observed in the proportion of the hcp phase. Ticor South Africa operates a dry mill at the town of Empangeni in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa. The dry mill processes a non-magnetic mineral stream constituting rutile, leucoxene and zircon as major minerals, and minor quantities of ilmenite and other non-valuable minerals. For plant control and optimization, continuous ‘real time’ information about the mineral and chemical compositions in various plant streams is required. The current practice is to take samples at regular intervals and submit them for mineralogical(grain counting) and chemical analyses. However, these methods are time consuming, and in the case of manual grain counting, tedious and operator dependent. Until now an on-line or real-time instant mineral quantification system, which will be of great value in a plant operations environment, has not been available. Blue Cube Systems has developed a mineral quantification system using spectral mineral analysis. It measures and quantifies the composition of mineral samples instantly, providing consistent data in real time. A series of process stream samples from the dry mill mentioned above were used to evaluate the Blue Cube Systems instant mineral quantifier. This article will •describe the procedure of setting up and evaluating the Blue Cube Instant MineralQuantifier equipment •present its results, and •discuss the intended applications.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers’ compensation and hearing aids. Although the elimination of hazardous noise is the ideal long-term solution to the noise problem, miners will likely need to rely on personal hearing protection in certain situations for quite some time. However, it is well known that noise attenuation provided by hearing protectors as they are worn during everyday use in the workplace is usually worse than when tested under laboratory conditions. Additionally, workers may refuse to wear their hearing protection for any number of reasons. Therefore, this project was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protectors, with an emphasis toward optimizing the balance between effectiveness, comfort, overprotection, and communication ability. Currently, the necessary in-house laboratory facilities and research techniques are being finalized. Individual experiments are planned that involve analysis of new hearing protector technology under both laboratory and field conditions. The laboratory components are to consist of con-trolled studies using human subjects and/or an anthropometrically correct artificial test fixture to evaluate the adequacy/effectiveness of various hearing protective devices. Field studies are planned to determine the actual usefulness and practicality of the hearing protectors as used in diferent mining environments. Recommendations can then be offered to the mining community regarding correct earplug/earmuff usage that maximizes recognition of hazard/warning sounds while adequately protecting the miners’ hearing.

South Texas, one of the world's important oil and gas-producing areas, continued to hold interest during 1939 as another scries of new fields and new producing levels was developed within its boundaries at a fairly continuous rate throughout the year. There were 1801 wells drilled in this area in 1939, compared to 1678 in 1938; of these, 1515 were drilled in established fields, or as extensions to proven areas (semi-wildcat), and 286 were drilled as rank wildcats, in search of new production. Among these rank wildcats, 22 produced oil, 7 produced distillate and gas and 257 were abandoned as dry holes (see Table 5). Of the 1515 field and cxtension wells, 1213 produced oil, or distillate and gas, 50 produced only gas and 252 were dry; 38 found new productive sand levels in proven ficlds. Jim Wells County led this district in discoveries, having had 9 new fields arid 9 new productive sands found within its border during 1939. Most activc of the 1939 discoveries were Reynold?; and Ben Bolt fields in Jim Wells County and Minnie Bock field in Nueccs County; among producing fields the most activc were: East White Point and Aransas Pass (McCampbell). Production from South Texas in 1939 totaled 55,105,506 bbl. against a total of 56,152,122 bbl. produced in 1938. South Texas should continue its present rate of developrnent and exploration and this should result in the discovery of many fields in its numerous oil-bearing zones, and should also lead to more knowledge of the possibilities of its deeper horizons, such as the Mt. Selman and Wilcox formations; with the latter holding particular interest at the present time. Tide Water Associated Oil Company's A. M. Bruni No. I, Cole-Bruni field, Webb County, the deepest well drilled along the Mirando trend, was carried to 8959 ft., where it started to blow out from a Wilcox sand topped at 8954 ft., making gas, distillate and mud under heavy pressure. After the well was killed, drill stem beeame stuck and was cemented in place in order to test a Queen City (Mt. Selman) sand logged from 5620 to 5675 ft. This and other shows found in other wells along this trend, but out of this district, have served to increase the importance of this but little explored Sparta-Wilcox trend of South Texas during the year, and more activity along it is to be expected in the near future.

South Texas, one of the world's important oil and gas-producing areas, continued to hold interest during 1939 as another scries of new fields and new producing levels was developed within its boundaries at a fairly continuous rate throughout the year. There were 1801 wells drilled in this area in 1939, compared to 1678 in 1938; of these, 1515 were drilled in established fields, or as extensions to proven areas (semi-wildcat), and 286 were drilled as rank wildcats, in search of new production. Among these rank wildcats, 22 produced oil, 7 produced distillate and gas and 257 were abandoned as dry holes (see Table 5). Of the 1515 field and cxtension wells, 1213 produced oil, or distillate and gas, 50 produced only gas and 252 were dry; 38 found new productive sand levels in proven ficlds. Jim Wells County led this district in discoveries, having had 9 new fields arid 9 new productive sands found within its border during 1939. Most activc of the 1939 discoveries were Reynold?; and Ben Bolt fields in Jim Wells County and Minnie Bock field in Nueccs County; among producing fields the most activc were: East White Point and Aransas Pass (McCampbell). Production from South Texas in 1939 totaled 55,105,506 bbl. against a total of 56,152,122 bbl. produced in 1938. South Texas should continue its present rate of developrnent and exploration and this should result in the discovery of many fields in its numerous oil-bearing zones, and should also lead to more knowledge of the possibilities of its deeper horizons, such as the Mt. Selman and Wilcox formations; with the latter holding particular interest at the present time. Tide Water Associated Oil Company's A. M. Bruni No. I, Cole-Bruni field, Webb County, the deepest well drilled along the Mirando trend, was carried to 8959 ft., where it started to blow out from a Wilcox sand topped at 8954 ft., making gas, distillate and mud under heavy pressure. After the well was killed, drill stem beeame stuck and was cemented in place in order to test a Queen City (Mt. Selman) sand logged from 5620 to 5675 ft.
