"Concentrate sampling is a growing concern in the world's mining and smelting industry. The main modes of transportation for concentrate to the smelter are by truck or rail car in a bulk form, thereby limiting access to sample extraction equipment. In many cases, concentrate is shipped to a smelter by several suppliers therefore requiring individual manipulation of different customer samples in a safe and reliable manner. The Heath & Sherwood Bulk Product Sampler offers this feature as well as an economical and effortless way of obtaining samples in rail cars or truck boxes.In 1994, Noranda Metallurgie in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec purchased a self contained Bulk Product Sampler to extract samples directly from inside rail cars before unloading the concentrate. After testing and comparing the results with the conventional sampling method, the bulk product sampler proved to be a practical and advantageous solution for concentrate sampling both for the customer and smelter. Since its installation at the Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, the Bulk Product Sampler has been steadily used on rail cars which contain concentrates from around the world."

Zircon producers are often required to lower impurity levels to meet customer specifications as most of these impurities adversely effect the end use. For example, zircon sand in foundry applications needs to be free of any surface impurities (eg clay, gibbsite and goethite) which otherwise could cause sintering or fusion between cast metal and the zircon mould. Light coloured ceramic grade zircon, typically low in iron oxides and titania, is preferred in ceramics applications. The presence of impurities in zircon sands is a problem in the magnetic and electrostatic separation stages of their concentration. Previous work (Aral et al, 1997) showed that impurities in zircon sand concentrates occurred in the form of stains on grain surfaces, discrete gangue minerals and in the mineral grains. The gangue minerals such as rutile, garnet, xenotime, monazite, spinels, ilmenite, and aluminium silicates in the concentrate in some cases (Aral et al, 1997) contribute significantly to the impurity content of the concentrate. A careful hand picking of the impurity grains from a Western Australian zircon sand showed that the impurity content of the concentrate could be lowered significantly as a result of the removal of the surface stained grains and gangue minerals. The hand-picked ædirtyÆ fraction, comprised about eight per cent by weight of the concentrate, and consisted mostly of iron-oxide/hydroxide-stained zircon, silica grains and rutile, and occasionally ilmenite, monazite, gahnite and other (unidentified) coloured grains. The chemical analysis of the remaining æcleanÆ fraction showed that the major impurities (Fe and Ti) were reduced significantly (Table 1). The reduction in the uranium content was about 30 per cent. The other measured impurities, P, Mg, Al, Th, and Ca remained mostly unchanged as shown in Table 1. The contribution of ilmenite to the overall iron content of æcleanÆ zircon was insignificant as it comprised about 0.1 per cent weight of the æcleanÆ zircon. Rutile was the major source of titanium contamination (about one per cent by weight). Recent work (Aral and Calle, 1999) on zircon sand concentrates from the Murray Basin showed that, under the electron microprobe, the bulk of the impurities occurred in the dark back scattered electron (BSE) regions of the zoned zircon grains. The impurity contents of the light BSE regions and unblemished (unzoned) grains were low. The impurity content in zoned zircons has been investigated on single, relatively large, crystals (McLaren, Gerald and Williams, 1994; Smith et al, 1991; Romans, Brown and White, 1975). These studies generally aimed to investigate the incorporation of U in zircon as zircon is used extensively for U-Pb geochronology owing to its relatively high content of uranium. Smith et al (1991) identified a striking difference in composition between the areas of lower (dark BSE) and higher (light BSE) average atomic number in the zoned zircon. Their work showed in particular that the zones of lower atomic numbers contained very significant amounts of trace metals such as Y, REE, Nb, U, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba and, by difference H2O. In this paper the impurity distribution in zoned zircon grains was investigated on statistically significant number of grains before and after a leach treatment. The distribution of impurities was also measured in unblemished areas to compare the results.

"Numerous studies of the Bousquet mining district, Abitibi, Quebec, mainly following the successive discoveries of new gold deposits over the past two decades, have led to a broad range of genetic hypotheses for their gold deposition. A compilation of petrographic, structural, and geochemical data indicates that the gold deposits are composed chiefly of pyritic schists derived from felsic and mafic volcanic and volcaniclastic protoliths, and of auriferous massive pyrite hosted by pyritic schists of felsic affinity. The deposits are typically located within zones of local pyrite enrichment and advanced-argillic alteration which are in turn enclosed within much larger zones of disseminated pyrite included in regional-scale, commonly anastomosing, zones of sericitic alteration.Overprinting relationships between three sets of folds and foliations indicate that the host-rocks of the gold deposits have retained the imprint of three successive generations of ductile deformation resulting from regional dynamothermal metamorphism. Sericitic and advanced-argillic alteration, together with massive sulphide deposition, are interpreted to have taken place prior to the onset of the ductile deformation, based on observations 1) of altered fragments of wallrocks which are enclosed within massive sulphide bodies and were thus preserved through regional metamorphism, 2) of the syntectonic deformed pyrite, and3) of the syn-tectonic porphyroblasts of andalusite, garnet and plagioclase. The orebodies are oblate to prolate, and the pyrite-gold mineralization is typically vein-type, distributed in foliation-oblique and foliation-parallel veins. The gold-bearing structures postdate all foliations, and are associated with retrograde alteration assemblages that are pseudomorphic after pea~-metamorphic porphyroblasts in host-rocks, and with cataclasticfabrics that overprint syn-metamorphic pressure-solution features and annealing fabrics in pyrite.Retrograde gold-bearing assemblages indicate a chemical disequilibrium between the ore-forming fluids and their host rocks. This disequilibrium rules out the possibility that gold was remobilized from its own host, and suggests, instead, that the ore-forming fluids and their metal contents had an allochtonous source. Stable and radiogenic isotope analyses indicate that the fluids had a metamorphic origin, and that the associated alteration took place after the culmination of the Kenoran orogeny."

Gas holdup profiles in the collection zones of a pilot flotation column (0.91 m x 13.5 m) and a laboratory flotation column (0.057 m x 9.5 m) operated with air and water only were determined from pressure measurements. The profiles were determined discretely and continuously. For the pilot column, a minimum distance between pressure measurements was necessary to give reliable results. For the laboratory column, a third-degree polynomial fit to the pressure vs. height data was required. Water manometers proved to be less sensitive to sensor and process noise than pressure transducers. The profiles showed that gas holdup approximately doubled over a height of 8 to 10 m. The profiles were not linear, and the gradient increased towards the top of the column, especially for gas rates greater than 1 cm/s. The profiles cannot be predicted by a simple bubble expansion model. The implications of this new finding of a significant gas holdup increase with height in the collection zone on various aspects of flotation column design and operation are discussed.

The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regards "whole diesel exhaust" as "a potential occupational carcinogen." Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, N02, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols. The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality. Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters. Concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3.

This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

Discussion by Stephen Semeniuk Discussion As a valuator and SME member, I view Ross D. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. Five fields of expertise influence the value of a mineral property: •geological engineering, •commodity markets, •financial markets, •stock markets and •mineral property markets. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. Van Tingley, in Mining Magazine, July 1996: "... the DCF method has inherent dangers when applied to undeveloped resources. Firstly, it presents an often-undeserved aura of accuracy. "Loading and transportation are important activities of the mining process. Automation of these activities in underground hard rock mining has been discussed for a long time. This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a prototype automatic Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicle (a 7-ton GHH LF LHD model) operating in Zinkgruvan mine, Sweden. The purpose of the data analysis is to evaluate the operational and maintenance characteristics of the automatic LHD system in the mine. Graphical and numerical methods have been used for the statistical analysis of the data. IntroductionDuring the past years, the idea of integrated automation and tele-operation on Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines (Fig. 1) has attracted considerable interest in the Swedish mining industry. This is mainly due to the demand for improvement in the working environment and due to the rapid development of economic and reliable microprocessors for mining vehicles. Several advantages can be foreseen with the application of a Remote-controlled/Automatic LHD (RAL) system in underground mining. During the intial two years (1972 - 1974) of exploration at Telfer, water require- ments were limited to supporting a 50 man camp and diamond drilling to verify thickness and grade of the stratabound ore deposit. Water bores were drilled to intersect the Middle Vale Reef down dip from its outcrop about 70 metres below surface. The MVR reef is an oxidized pyritic horizon which contains 30% - 65% sulphide below the zone of oxidation and forms a highly porous leached gossanous zone to a depth of 100 metres. The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. There are a large number of thick alluvium and thin bedrock deposits at depth in the Henan coal base. The degree of surface mining is high, and the surface environment is seriously damaged. Using indoor experiments, numerical simulation, and field measurement, it is studied the influence of the mechanical properties of thick alluvium on the surface subsidence characteristics of thick alluvium thin bedrock deposits at depth, taking Zhaogu No. 2 coal mine as the research background. The results show that the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the alluvial layer are linearly negatively correlated with the alluvial layer particle size, linearly positively correlated with the confining pressure, and nonlinearly positively correlated with the loading rate. The thickness of the alluvial layer has the greatest influence on the displacement of surface subsidence and the range of surface subsidence. The advancing mining rate of the working face has the greatest influence on the surface horizontal displacement. The mechanical properties of the alluvial layer affect the evolution characteristics of the caving arch and towering roof beam. The influence range of the 11012 working face is about 550 m, β is about 55.5°, and the maximum subsidence rate of the surface is 12 mm/day. The mining process and separation grouting can be adjusted to control the overburden displacement to reduce surface disturbance and protect the surface ecological environment. The research results of this paper can provide a research basis for the study of surface subsidence under similar geological conditions.

A vast majority of the operating longwall sections use shield-type face supports to provide ground control in the United States. As a co-operative research program between the University of Alabama (UA) and Jim Walter Resources, Inc.(JWR), a joint research program is underway to study interaction of shields with surrounding rock masses. A series of analyses on the response of shields are performed using monitored data at a longwall face in a deep coal mine. In this paper, various effects of parameters, such as leg pressure, setting load, developing load, maximum loading rate, pressure in capsule, and convergence between canopy and base, are discussed and recommended as stability indices. A microcomputer program is being developed for instantaneous interpretation of the shield monitored data, and for giving warnings of potential problems. The preliminary results define the effects of the setting load, developing load, and rate of developing load or leg closure rate. The objective of the study is to understand the shield characteristics and their interaction with surrounding strata in real time, then develop a reliable program for maintaining longwall stability.

Investigations were undertaken to assess the suitability of CSIROflotation methods for improving the efficiency of separation of heavyminerals in the monazite circuit at the Westralian Sands Limitedoperations at Capel, Western Australia. Flotation work was conducted on two plant samples. The first was a high-titanium product containing considerable amounts of zircon and silica as quartz and aluminosilicates, and the second was a low monazite/zircon material containing high levels of silica. A three-stage process including reverse flotation was developed totreat the first sample. In this process monazite, zircon, quartz, andaluminosilicates were selectively concentrated by flotation and screening to produce a titanium-rich product. In the first stage, an acid amine float, monazite, zircon, and some non-zircon silica were recovered and in the second stage, an alkaline amine float using a fluoride activator, more quartz and staurolite were floated. The titanium minerals were thus concentrated in the unfloated fraction. In the third stage, the titanium-rich flotation tail was screened at 250 ¦m to remove the remaining coarse aluminosilicates. In a single pass, the three-stage process yielded a TiO2 recovery of 64.0 per cent with the titanium-rich product assaying 70.3 per cent TiO2.

The Bryan Mound salt dome in Freeport, Texas, has some of the largest and oldest solution caverns in the U.S. There are a total of five caverns of varying shapes and sizes randomly distributed throughout the salt dome. When the caverns were converted from a brine production to an oil storage operation, the effects on long-term stability of the caverns and inter-cavern behavior were analyzed to evaluate the future safety of the storage operation. The analysis was based on a worst-possible-case scenario, including accidental wellhead pressure loss. The impact of this pressure loss upon the thinnest partition between the two closest caverns was analyzed, using a case example of storing lightest weight LPG, thereby creating maximum differential pressures between these two caverns. The finite element method with the REM computer code was utilized for this analysis. Results of the analysis illustrate the basic mechanisms of the long-term behavior of the multiple caverns in the LPG storage operation.

A primary factor in the selection of coals for making coke at high temperatures is the amount of pressure the coal will exert upon the oven walls when carbonized in modem by-product ovens.l-3 This factor has become increasingly important in recent years because of demands for increased throughput and higher coke yields. As a result of the increasing necessity for assessing coals in regard to their carbonization pressures, more and more research work is being directed toward developing labora-tory-scale tests for predicting carbonization pressures and for showing how blends of coking coals may be modified to eliminate pressures liable to damage coke-oven walls. The specific reasons have never been defined as to why some blends of coking coals develop dangerous carbonization pressures and others do not, therefore specific procedures to eliminate dangerous pressures could not be prescribed. It is true that the major processes occurring during carbonization have been described by many writers,4 and there is a general agreement on the ideas of the changes that occur as coal is transformed into coke. However, there is little evidence relating the processes occurring during carbonization to the pressure developed and the available evidence is very incomplete and often contradictory. This deficiency arises in part from the fact that the fundamental causes of pressure development have not been defined, at least from experimental data, and in turn this is the result of the lack of satisfactory testing equipment for studying the problem. Operating experience has shown several ways of reducing or eliminating dangerous pressures,5 but probably none of these ways is applicable to all blends of coking coals, and such empirical methods often lead to production of inferior coke. They are trial-and-error methods, not designed to remedy specific causes of pressure development. The number of laboratory-scale testing devices designed to estimate the carbonization pressures that result when coals are carbonized in commercial ovens is probably well over a hundred.6 Few of these instruments have remained in use for any length of time, either because the predictions were not sufficiently accurate or, more often, because too many exceptions were found. Often testing devices are operated without any attempt at duplication of conditions in commercial ovens and erroneous and contradictory results are frequently obtained. Therefore, it has seemed desirable to study the properties of coal itself and to determine any relationships between the properties of the coal and the carbonization pressures developed. The number of laboratory-scale testing devices designed to estimate the carbonization pressures that result when coals are carbonized in commercial ovens is probably well over a hundred.6 Few of these instruments have remained in use for any length of time, either because the predictions were not sufficiently accurate or, more often, because too many exceptions were found. Often testing devices are operated without any attempt at duplication of conditions in commercial ovens and erroneous and contradictory results are frequently obtained. The key design parameters of roof bolting using expansion - shell type support for underground coal mine roof support are bolt length, bolt spacing, installed load and anchorage capacity. Depending on the utilization of suspension effect or friction effect, the bolt length is dictated either by the distance between the roof surface and the first overlying strong strata encountered or the desired magnitude of reduction in bending stress at the roof surface, The current prevailing practices about the bolt spacing and installed load are that an initial torque of 125 - 170 ft-lbs is applied and the bolts are spaced at 4- or 5- ft. square grid pattern. This seems to be a rather broad generalization in view of the great geological variances which are expected in underground coal mines. A modest evaluation program to measure the effectiveness of current roof bolting practices is to monitor the load history of roof bolts during a complete mining cycle including the phases of room development and pillar robbing. The load history, when compared with the anchorage capacity of roof bolts determined by in-situ pull tests, will provide information for evaluating the installed load, the bolt spacing as well as the specifications for structural and anchorage characteristics of the bolt assemblies. This paper presents a case history of monitoring the complete load histories of roof bolts in an underground coal mine of Pittsburgh seam.
