A portable electronic instrument was developed which will measure change of longitudinal wave velocity with change of uniaxial stress in rock columns. The instrument is a solid-state device powered by nickel-cadmium batteries. It uses a probe of two piezo-electric crystals spaced inches apart to send and receive a pulse through a stressed rock. A one-inch cathode ray oscilloscope visually displays the longitudinal wave. A reference chart is used to find the stress. Laboratory results have indicated that the average stress on a sandstone column can be found to within 35 psi. The feasibility of using this instrument to determine stresses in mine pillars is to be studied. The instrument may be used to investigate physical properties of rock.

This paper presents the main environmental assessment techniques and indicators that can be used a) for the establishment of a sustainable development framework and b) for the evaluation of the environmental performance within the mining sector. Reference is made to techniques as environmental risk and impact assessment, life cycle assessment, cost benefit analysis and best practical environmental option assessment that can be used as tools to assess environmental impacts of processes, activities and products in the mining sector. In addition, the issue of environmental indicators, covering operational, management and environmental areas, that provide valuable information regarding both the environmental performance of a mining company and its efforts to influence this performance towards sustainability is discussed.

In Chile there are significant amounts of gold in flotation tailings that could be recovered, being heap leaching the most promising alternative. In order to determine the feasibility of treating these tailings by this method, a detailed study is carried out using 4 representative samples. After defining the best conditions an economic evaluation is done for a plant treating 200 tpd, sensibilizing with respect to parameters such us gold price, tailing grade and capital costs. The results show that it is technically feasible treat these gold tailings by heap leaching with gold extractions over 70 %. It is also economically feasible for gold grades higher than 0.5 g/t and gold prices over 350 US/oz.

A study was conducted to assess a new wet gravity-separation machine, identified as the Multi-Gravity Separator(MGS). Chromite fines, obained from an Albanian chromite and olivine ore and containing 23% Cr2O3 and 18% SiO2, were used in the study. The first step was to determine the influence of various operating parameters. The study indicated that the most important variables for the MGS are rotational speed, tilt angle and shake amplitude. The best treatment conditions for the ore were then identified by investigating a series of circuits designed to produce a marketable product. In open circuit, a concentrate containing 50% CI-203 was obtained with a recovery of 72%.

Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the US, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available.1 The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts.

In a fundamental study of the physical chemistry of steelmaking slag, equilibra bet- ween hydrogen-water vapour gas mixtures and liquid slags contained in solid iron crucibles have been measured for four binary slags, FetO-CaO, FetO-Si02, FetO-TiO2 and FetO-Al203 at 14000C. From the data, the activity of iron oxide and the ratio of ferrous and ferric ions (A = Fe3+/Fe2+) were calculated for the slag composition. The best ionic model is found to be that based on regular solution of cations. The oxygen distribution between slag and metal is quantitatively expressed by this model over a wide range of slag composition.

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

A coupled finite element geomechanical- hydrology code is currently under development for application to the problem of predicting groundwater disturbances associated with mine subsidence. The structural-fluid coupling is addressed by calculating the subsided mine geometry, with emphasis placed on determining the strata disturbance and locating damaged regions, for input into a hydrology code, which determines localized volume flow rates and aquifer fluctuations. Benefits from coupling will be best realized when field measurements, an additional aspect of the study concurrent with analytical investigations, indicating the relationship between increasing rock strain and increasing permeability are incorporated into hydraulic material descriptions. Hydrologic and struc- tural calculations are presented to demonstrate computational capabilities applicable to mine subsidence

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a influência da adição do rejeito de pó de balão nas propriedades mecânicas do concreto destinado à fabricação de pavers, visto que a indústria da construção civil é a maior responsável pela geração de resíduos, sendo responsável pelo consumo de aproximadamente 40% dos recursos naturais extraídos. Sendo assim, o rejeito foi analisado granulometricamente por peneiramento e foram feitos dois traços, um denominado traço referência e o outro denominado traço substituído, sendo este último com adição de 4% em massa do pó de balão. A partir dos traços calculados foram moldados corpos de prova e avaliados a resistência à compressão destes. Os corpos de prova moldados a partir do traço substituído exibiram maior resistência à compressão tanto na idade de 7 dias quanto na idade de 28 dias, quando comparados aos corpos moldados a partir do traço referência. Esse incremento na resistência mecânica é justificado pela distribuição granulométrica do pó de balão, que por ser constituído em sua maior parte por finos inferiores a 0,15mm atua preenchendo vazios, reduzindo zonas de transição interfacial e formando uma microestrutura mais refinada.

A program was written which utilizes a remote teletype input to a time- sharing computer to plot charged particle or X-ray energy spectra which are stored in the memory of multichannel analyzers. The program, written in FORTRAN V, accepts the data printed out by the pulse height analyzer on paper tape and then, after reading these data tapes into the computer, plots on the teletype the desired energy spectra on a scale automatically adjusted for the maximum number occurring in the data. The program is flexible enough so that the researcher can subsequently expand or contract the vertical (intensity) or horizontal (energy) scales. With a slight modification, the program will accept data printouts from scalers or analog to digital converters. The program also includes a feature for integrating the energy peaks obtained by pulse height analysis.

INTRODUCTION One cannot discuss the subject of "Raising Capital in the 1990s" without having a crystal ball and a reliable fortune teller. This discusses "Raising Capital for the 1990sW, which is what Metal1 Mining Corporation did in 1987. We raised (3166 million in an IPO (initial public offering) that was originally planned for only some (375 million. Why did we raise this money? How did we do it, and why was this IPO so successful? The answer to the first question requires a description of the promoter and principal shareholder of Metal1 Mining Corporation, Metallgesellschaft AG. This West Germany company was founded over 100 years ago in Frankfurt as a trading house for non-ferrous metals. It has developed into one of the world's leading firms in the non-ferrous metals industry. The company's worldwide activities in all areas of that business include mining, smelting and refining, the trading of ore, base and precious metals, the production of semi-fabricated and finished metal products, and the provision of engineering, construction and transportation services. In addition, mining was sub-divided into two separate departments -- domestic and international. These two departments had different management styles and diverging interests which resulted in a minimum co-operation between them. The domestic mining department was primarily interested in the survival of the local mines. These mines were characterized by rising operating costs and declining ore grades. It took a special commitment and continued ingenuity to develop and adjust to local conditions, and modern mining and processing technology, in order to remain competitive, or at least survive within the international mining industry. This information circular is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines describing methods and costs at various mining operations. The Schwartzwalder uranium mine, situated about 20 miles west of Denver, Colo., is an important source of uranium ore in the Front Range. Production was begun in 1953, and nearly 36,500 tons of ore had been shipped by September 1, 1958. The mine is operated by Denver-Golden Oil & Uranium Co., Denver, Colo. Much interest has been shown in the property since uranium mineralization tit was found by Fred Schwartzwalder in 1949. The Atomic Energy Commission, Federal Geological Survey, Office of Minerals Exploration (formerly Defense Minerals Exploration Administration), and Federal Bureau of Mines have done work in the area, and various private concerns have shown interest in the property.

A proposed rehabilitation of a 200,000 sf, 75-foot high steel-frame building at the former U.S. Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York required the review of existing foundation data and an investigation of the foundations with respect to their condition. The building was constructed in stages between 1856 and 1933, including several expansions and interior equipment with isolated foundations. The building has clear spans on the order of 50 feet and at one time supported cranes allowing transport of heavy equipment through the building. The proposed rehabilitation is to include a food manufacturing center and office space having multiple stories. Original construction drawings, available from the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation?s drawing archive, were reviewed to determine the foundation system supporting the structure. The original drawings provide a window into the methods utilized during late 19th and early 20th century pile foundation construction. The review revealed that the building is supported by pile foundations ranging from timber to concrete-filled steel pipe (depending on the year of construction). Annotations including pile driving records were available on some drawings indicating the design and as-built capacity (using the ENR formula for driving resistance). An investigation consisting of test borings was performed to identify the subsurface conditions underlying the building for evaluating theoretical capacity of the piles. A test pit investigation was performed against existing columns within the structure to expose the piles and pile caps for inspection pertaining to pile condition. The test pit investigation revealed methods utilized during original construction to integrate new columns with existing floor slabs, the use of below-grade brick arches to support a floor slab, and the condition of timber piles which were likely installed up to 120 years ago. The observations made within the test pits were compared with original drawings to evaluate the accuracy of these drawings.

"The Bureau of Mines investigated the presence and extent of methane accumulations in mine roof cavities using a full-scale mine model. Methane was released at a constant rate into the roof of a cavity built onto a 700-ft wind tunnel. Two box-shaped roof cavities were used in the study: one had a volume of 114.7 cu ft; and the other had a volume of 57.3 cu ft. Methane concentration was measured at 28 sampling points in the cavities using 21 different combinations of gas emission rates and air velocities. Brattice hung in the cavity helped reduce methane concentrations without auxiliary ventilation. It was also found that the effective ventilation rate increased by a factor of 40 in the large cavity and by a factor of 20 in the small cavity when air velocity was increased from 100 to 600 fpm.INTRODUCTIONAny location in a coal mine where 5 pct or more of methane is present constitutes a potential site for an explosion and roof cavities are likely locations. Unfortunately, little is known about the buildup of methane in roof cavities. Some research has been done using scale models where no air flows past the cavity so that methane disperses only by diffusion (5) 4 a rare situation in mines.No known cavity-model investigations have been made that simulate air and methane flow conditions normally encountered underground. These Bureau of Mines studies were undertaken to determine the extent and manner of methane buildups in coal mine roof cavities with air velocities in the range normally found in coal mines and with various methane emission rates."

Mathematical economic models for assess ment of technological progress in the mining industry in the USSR are discussed. The models are based on a simple index, TT which approxi- mates the rate of growth of the people's living standards. However, for application in the mining industry it is necessary to incorporate various parameters to account for the dynamic charges in the geological, mining and other technological conditions. Derivations of the models are shown and examples of results are Included.

Copper precipitates from a iron as fcc E phase without formation of intermediate compounds. In the first stage of the precipitation, spherical particles with diameters < 100A are formed at a high rate. During the second stage, the particles grow at a rate given by Zener&apos;s equation for growth of a spherical precipitate. In the third stage, growth is slower. Rod-shaped particles form after long aging times at 700°C. Maximum strengthenzng was observed at the beginning of the second step of precipitation. During plastic deformation of the aggregate, particles appear to deform initially by twinning. THE work discussed herein was part of a study of precipitation of substitutional elements from a iron. Copper was chosen as one of these substitutional elements because it has about the same atomic size as a iron, and does not form an intermetallic compound with iron. The data on the iron-copper system then available were summarized by Daniloff1 several years ago. The solubility of copper in a iron has been determined by electrical conductivity measurements,2 lattice parameter measurements,3 and by saturating thin iron foils with copper and determining the copper content.4 The results of the three investigations do not agree very well, but the value of 2.4 wt pct for the maximum solubility at 840°C seems to be the most reliable,4 Fig. 1. An alloy containing 1.23 wt pct Cu was used in our work to assure starting with a completely homogeneous material. This report presents a refractive seismic technique for evaluating the strength of rock within an open pit bench. A concept of correlating rock strength and seismic velocity is discussed and a method of predicting the degree of fragmentation of a pit bench is introduced, Figure 1 shows the area of interests [ ] Most of the work was performed while completing graduate studies at the University of Arizona.
