The growth temperature of dendrite tips has been measured in a binary alloy system, Al-Cu, as a function of rate of formation of solid phase. Metallographic examination has rerealed the dendritic structure dereloped during different stages of the freezing process and factors influencing the undercooling, such as solute buildup, surface tension, and kinetic effects, have been estimated. Practical implications of the results are discussed. THE development of a dendritic growth pattern during the solidification of metals and alloys has an influence at least equal to that of grain size on the properties of the casting or ingot being produced. and consequently much interest has been devoted to the study of this phenomenon. A review of the knowledge gathered up to 1964 has been given by Chalmers.' Among recent publications in the area the works of Jackson et al 2 and Flemings and his coworkers3,4 are of special interest. This work is an experimental study of the factors which influence the development of a dendritic pattern during the solidification of a typical binary alloy system, A1-Cu, when there is no heat source in the liquid. This means that the temperature and the temperature gradient are controlled by the heat extraction from and latent heat evolved by the growing crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were prepared from a master alloy made up of aluminum, 99.995 pct, and copper. 99.99 pct, of the concentrations given below and of sufficient size to fill cylindrical graphite molds of 35 mm ID and 35 mm height. Bottom. wall. and lid of the graphite molds were all of 6 mm thickness, Fig. 1. Thin ceramic thermocouple shields could be introduced at different positions in the sample through holes in the lid. The assembly was heated in a small vertical resistance furnace to a suitable temperature. 700° to 720°C. which is well above the melting point of the sample. It was thereafter taken out of the furnace and chilled at selected rates, and the temperature changes in the sample were recorded. For high sensitivity in the temperature recordings, a reference thermocouple was held in a solidifying pure aluminum melt. which was very well insulated and therefore was at a constant temperature. 660°C, for nearly half an hour. The thermocouples were connected so that the difference voltage was fed into the recorder of which the most sensitive range was 1 mV. Temperature variations could be read to within 0.l°C. The thermocouples used were of the Chromel-Alumel type (28- or 38-gage wires) and the recorder a two-pen Moseley strip chart recorder. The different rates of chilling were obtained in the following way. a) The graphite crucible was wrapped in one or two layers of an insulating. feltlike material (Fiberfrax paper from the Carborundum Co.). The drop in temperature per unit time after complete solidification could thereby be varied from 8" to 18°C per min. This corresponds to a rate of heat extraction in the given samples from 0.08 to 0.17 cal cm-' sec-I. 6) The bare graphite mold was placed free on a piece of firebrick. The measured temperature drop was around 50°C per min (-0.5 cal cm-" ' sec- I). c) By blowing compressed air through a tube with many holes surrounding the mold in a ring shape. the rate of heat transfer could be raised to 150' to 200°C per min (-1.7 cal cm-3 sec- I). d) Cooling rates around 1000 C per mill (-9.4 cal cm-3 sec-l) were obtained by substituting the air in the device used in c by water. The range of cooling rates used in these experiments correspond to technical casting processes from slow solidification as obtained in sand molds to very rapid freezing which occurs in some continuous casting and welding processes. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The A1-Cu system was chosen for the experiments: the relevant part of the phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. 2. Observation of the Center Temperature. When a thermocouple is inserted in the center of the melt. the type of cooling curves obtained at slow solidification rates differs little from numerous published curves from similar systems. and the solidification pattern

"El presente trabajo describe los aspectos geoambientales de la cuenca del río Huaura, ubicada al norte de la región de Lima con el fin de establecer una línea de base geoambiental. Dicha cuenca destaca por la actividad agroindustrial, la minería representada por minas como Raura y Ucchucchaucua, la presencia de áreas geoturísticas como los baños termo-medicinales de Churín y los centros poblados como Huacho, Huaura y Oyón. La caracterización geodinámica y el análisis de susceptibilidad a movimientos en masa e inundaciones, han permitido establecer que las zonas más susceptibles a estos procesos se encuentran en los distritos de: Sayán, Naván, Andajes, Pachangara, Oyón, Maray, Santa Leonor, Caujul, Huaura, Huacho, Leoncio Prado e Ihuarí. En este sentido, el estudio geambiental señala que la zona más impactada está ubicada en Caujul (alrededores de la mina abandonada Santa Rita) y que se debe monitorear los siguientes sectores: Uchucchacua, Churín e Iscaycruz en Oyón; y Vilcahuara, Sayán, Huamboy Grande, Chiuchín y Huacho, en Huaura; donde en algunos casos se ha superado los límites permisibles para aguas y sedimentos de normativas internacionales, e igualmente se ha registrado disposición de residuos sólidos a la intemperie, salitrización de los suelos por uso de insecticidas en actividades agrícolas, vertimiento de gases tóxicos de las actividades agroindustriales y disposición inadecuado de desmontes de construcción o de mina."

Heat transfer in partially wet mine airways has been the subject of study for quite some time. Of the available models some are quite empirical while some involve highly complicated computation. Models developed by Amano, Mizuta and Hiramatsu and Banerjee and Chernyak as well as that modified by Misra were evaluated for prediction of the rise in temperature and humidity (mixing ratio ) of partially wet mine airways at four different levels in the Mosaboni Mine of Hindustan Copper Ltd. Measurements of barometric pressure, virgin-rock temperature and changes in dry- and wet-bulb temperatures along a certain length of airway were made. The rise in dry-bulb temperature and mixing ratio of air over the sections were calculated using the three models. The study reveals that calculated values of temperature and moisture content agree within possible rage of experimental error with all the three models in case of three levels with low wetness factor, but the agreement was poor for the relatively more wet airway on the 30th level. Errors in the estimation of fw to the tune of 0.025 can lead to fair error up to 0.94 K in the estimated temperature while alternative ways of estimating the heat transfer coefficient [] can introduce errors up to 1.45 K.

Over the past twenty years, significant advances have been made in the field of microalloying steels and associated applications, among which one of the most successful application cases is development and application of heavy-gauge X80 coil with high temperature processing HTP practice used for China's Second West-East pipeline, the longest X80 pipe in the world. During this process, HTP design concept has been sucessfully applied to develop 18.4mm X80 coil with demanding low-temperature fracture toughness requirements. In the meanwhile, China's metallurgical workers have further optimized HTP design concept with the aid of powerful rolling mill and coiling equipment, and made it possible to develop 21.4mm X80 coil used for Russia-China East line. In the paper, we would simply review the development history of high-strength pipeline steels, and then give more priority to the fundamental points for sucessful development of 18.4mm X80 coil and SSAW pipe, which paved the way for subsequent development of 21.4mm X80 coil and SSAW pipe. Finally, we would present the test results of mass production and burst tests, and dispel the suspicion that SSAW pipes made of X80 coil are more qualified to resist ductile fracture.

"Cluff Mining has successfully operated a gold recovery plant at its Cluff Lake operation in northern Saskatchewan to recover gold f rom Phase 1 uranium leach tailings. The operating circuit consists of tailings repulping, grinding, cyanidation, carbon-inpulp, gold recov ery, and cyanide destruction by acidification, volatilization and re-neutralization. The process is described and operating data and metallurgical results from the operation are provided.INTRODUCTIONCluff Mining, a Saskatchewan partnership, is owned 20 per cent by Cameco and 80 per cent by Amok Ltd. /Ltée. (Amok), manager and operator of the partnership.The current operation includes the Phase II uranium mining and milling facilities, located at Cluff Lake, 700 km north of Saskatoon, capable of processing 300 000 tonnes o f ore to produce about 4 000 000 lb UPs (1500 tonnes of uranium) per year.The Phase I operation was initially established to process the very high grade ""0"" uranium orebody from 1980 to 1983. The leach tailings from the Phase I mill operation were found to contain elevated level s of gold . These high gold values were partially due to the gravity pre-concentration step included in the uranium recovery circuit, and to the naturally high levels of gold associated with the uranium mineralization in the""0"" orebody .During the Phase I operation some 6475 tonnes of leach tails were produced and stored in a total o f 2916 large concrete containers (vaults). This method of storage was, at the time, deemed to be the preferred method of temporary storage for the tailings.This temporary storage of high-grade gold tailings facilitated the reclamation and reprocessing of the leach tail s for gold recovery. The primary reason for reprocessing the Phase 1 leach tails was to provide for long-term permanent disposal of the material as an admixture with Phase II tailings in the Cluff Lake tailings disposal area. Although there was limited tonnage, the high gold content in the material made the in stallation of a gold recovery circuit economically justifiable."

The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. SEYBOLT et al.' have detected various silica films formed on a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy after heating at low oxygen potentials with the electron diffraction method, and they have made some observations on the H,0/H2 ratios required to form them. The purpose of this note is to describe the structure of the oxide film formed on either mechanically or electrolytically polished surfaces of a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy containing small amounts of manganese after heating at low oxygen potential. The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems during microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper, electromagnetic and thermal models of coal are presented that can predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave drying.

When a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibilities of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or ji-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1. The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands. Accomplishments in Slate† Initial experiments with wire saws by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the Colonial Slate Quarry, Wind Gap, Pa., in 1926, attained success so immediate and pronounced that within two years in virtually every quarry in the neighborhood of Wind Gap, Pen Argyl and Bangor, the most productive slate area in the United States, wire saws were substituted for channeling machines. An 80-ft. cut in slate is shown in Fig. 2. The technique of operation has been described in several reports (references at the end of the paper). The present purpose is to summarize the accomplishments in a large, typical slate quarry after nine. years of experience. Parsons Bros. Slate Co., at Pen Argyl, Pa., substituted two wire saws for six channeling machines in 1927. The following comparisons are made between the present method with wire saws and the former channel-ing-machine method. The Canyon Diggings zinc-lead deposit is in an area of structural deformation of sedimentary rooks in Newton County, Mo., 14 miles southeast of Joplin, within the southern limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling on the several tracts covering the area had been carried on sporadically since 1900, and incomplete records show a production of 1,341 tonsof zinc and lead concentrates. On the northern part of the deposit the predominant metal is which occurs as galena, cerrusite, and pyromorphite in broken chert near the surface. On the southern part, lead is subordinate to zinc, which occurs mainly as carbonate and silicate minerals in brecciated chert to a maximum depth of about 150 feet. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate that approximately 77 percent of the zinc and 50 percent of trio lead i8 in nonsulfide minerals resulting from the oxidation of sphalerite and galena. Between August 12, 1948, and October 5, 1949, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 85 holes aggregating 10,571 feet of bore and sampling two mill-tailings dumps and three mine dumps. Factual data on the investigation and the logs of Bureau of Mines drill holes are presented in this report.

Current operations were on a marginal economic basis, and government aid was sought in an endeavor to outline ore reserves so that production might be maintained.

A precipitação é uma etapa de extrema importância na produção de alumina por influenciar diretamente em vários indicadores de performance, como produtividade, consumo de vapor, estabilidade da planta e muitos outros. Esse processo tem como força motriz a supersaturação de alumina no licor Bayer, que é a diferença entre a concentração de alumina no licor e a sua concentração de equilíbrio. A concentração cáustica no licor impacta a supersaturação. Foi identificada a oportunidade de adição do filtrado da filtração de hidrato (H2) no início da precipitação, aumentando a supersaturação de alumina no licor Bayer. Para a mesma produção de alumina, os resultados obtidos foram o aumento da produtividade, aumento da concentração de sólidos no circuito, além da diminuição de licor circulante na refinaria. Este último, por sua vez, influencia diretamente no consumo de vapor da planta, o que implica na redução do uso de gás natural.

Methods of measuring in situ rock thermo-physical properties are rapidly evolving. Among those existing in the literature, a particular measurement procedure was selected for further development. The measurement is based on creating a spherical temperature field in a drill hole using a point source heater of constant heat flux. The bivariate temperature distribution 0 (r, t) is measured at several points along the length of the drillhole, radius r from the heater and at particular time intervals (t). A number of different evaluation methods were tested for calculating the unknown thermal conductivity (k) and diffusivity [] from the measured temperature and the known heat flux. The results showed that evaluation using the finite difference scheme and small temperature differences measured at points close together, cannot give a reasonable result. In order to solve the problem a new general analytical evaluation method is developed. Using an appropriate technique, it is possible to simultaneously obtain values for k and [], incorporating a semi least square technique to reduce the uncertainty in the evaluation. The new device and evaluation method makes it possible to obtain from a single drill hole highly precise k and [] values within an 8 hour period. The method has been used in several underground mines in the U.S. with good results.

The tensile properties of steels at elevated temperatures have been studied by numerous investigatorsll primarily for the purpose of determining their suitability for structural uses. Tests with this objective have been confined largely to the temperature range of approximately 20" to 500' C., because of the rapidly decreasing tensile strength at the latter temperature. Tests have also been extended to higher temperatures2 for the purpose of determining the most suitable forging range. This temperature range is also of theoretical interest. The phenomenon if increased tensile strength and decreased ductility .in the so-called "blue-heat" range, approximately 200" to 300" C., is well known. It was suggested to the Bureau early in 1926 that a study of the properties of rail steels in this temperature range might prove of interest in relation to the studies of transverse-fissure failures in rails. There were available from another investigation3 several new rails from several different heats made to approximately the same specification requirements, the complete manufacturing histories of which were known. It was decided to determine, at least in the preliminary series of tests, only the ultimate tensile strength, elongation and reduction of area, because of the difficulty, time and cost involved in determining the proportional limit and yield point at elevated temperatures.

In the Parkes process of extracting precious metals from lead, zinc is added to the molten lead containing gold, silver, copper, and some antimony. These metals, with the exception of antimony, form an alloy with the zinc by reason of their greater affinity for it than for the lead, and this alloy, being lighter than lead, rises to the top, carrying the precious metals with it, whence it can be removed by skimming. These skimmings are further treated for the separation of the zinc therefrom, and the recovery of the precious metals, the zinc being driven off by heat and again used for another operation. In addition to the zinc that combines with the silver, etc., a certain amount is necessary to saturate the lead, and it is therefore necessary to treat the desilverized lead to free it from this residual zinc. TO do this it is heated again in a reverberatory furnace and air or steam is blown through it. This oxidizes the zinc together with a small amount of lead and antimony, leaving the lead free from zinc and antimony, and forming oxides of these metals, which rise to the top and are skimmed off. This process relates to the separation of the metals in these oxides or skimmings. The skimmings are cooled, crushed, and mixed with carbonate of soda and pulverized oil coke. The mixture is heated in a reverberatory furnace on a bath of lead, to about 1,000" C. The metals are reduced by the coke, the lead and antimony go into the lead bath, while the zinc is volatilized and burned to oxide. This impure oxide is at the present time treated at Omaha by the Hall process of electrical precipitation, making a very pure metallic zinc. It can also be very easily refined by the old Schnabel process of using ammonia and carbon dioxide as a solvent. It seems to be in an ideal form for this purpose, and very few changes from the original method are required to obtain the zinc oxide practically C. P., leaving the lead and antimony as residues. THE statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Me Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. ½ in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5° B., flashing in open test at 199° F. The oil is heated to about 200° F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 lb. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-oz. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and "dog houses? to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent.

This paper describes in broad outline the development of a computer programme for determining the effects of changes in various factors in the condenser water circuit on the operation of a cooling plant. The programme is used to obtain design figures which result in minimum total power consumption. This was done for a range of different upcast air quantities, and the implications of low air quantities for heat rejection are discussed.
