The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.

"Magnesium has been well known as one of the excellent agent of desulfurization, deoxidation, etc. in iron- and steelmaking because of its high reactivity. Since its production is energy nitensive, the price is very high. Thus magnesium has not widely been used as an agent in metal refining ·processes. In the present work, reduction of magnesia by carbon and aluminum is examined. Because the reaction is very sensitive to temperature, non-isothermal technique is applied to investigate the reaction kinetics. The effects of heating rate .and reaction interface area on the reaction kinetics .are studied. .A kinetic model is proposed based on the experimental results.IntroductionFor the metal refining processes, the production of high purity metal has been one of the most important research subject. In order to produce the high purity metal, the amount of the refining agent and the consumed energy is increasing. Therefore, if the future earth environment is taken into consideration, the further efficient and energy saving processes are required. Generally, Cao slag has mainly been used for desulfurization of molten iron as a desulfurization agent. However, environmental problems, such as recycling of disposal slags, are still unsolved. On the other hand, the deoxidation of molten steel is mainly performed by addition of aluminum. Therefore, the alumina inclusions· remain in. molten steel and the great efforts have been made to the removal of the inclusions. The affinity of magnesium with sulfur and oxygen is strong, and magnesium is well known as a powerful desulfurization and deoxidation agent. However, magnesium has been seldom used for the steel' refining process. The following reasons are considered. Generally, magnesium is expensive. And at iron- and steelmaking temperatures, the refining efficiency becomes low due to its abruptly .evaporation."

IT was stated in a former paper1 that an intensive study of anthracite costs was being made by the engineers of the United States Fuel Administration. The results of this-study are now available and are offered as a supplement to the former paper. Anthracite costs as reported, for the 6-months period, December, 1917, to May, 1918, inclusive, as compiled by the Federal Trade Commission, were used as a base, and charts similar to those described in the-former paper were made for the standard white ash anthracite and for red ash and Lykens valley coals. ADJUSTMENTS The adjustments of cost from a reported to a price-fixing basis, as described for the bituminous methods, were applied but showed only minor adjustments as necessary. The great spread in anthracite prices on the varying sizes, which for the 6-mo. period under review ranged in average from $5.244 for nut to $2.074 for barley coal, makes the question of the percentage of sizes produced at the different collieries a vital one. The realization with the same prices for each size must be within very wide limits, when it is considered that the percentage of prepared coal reported from different collieries varied from over 80 per cent. to below 30 per. cent. for fresh-mined coal. Hence, as the spread in prices for the various sizes must be predicated on some percentage, it is essential to find some method of adjustment to allow for this variation. The logical method of adjustment is to calculate actual costs to costs as of the standard percentage of sizes, so that the margin between the adjusted costs and the average realization shall be the actual margin for each colliery between its actual costs and actual realization clue to its particular percentage of sizes. As a base for realization the actual percentage of sizes for fresh-mined coal for the 6-mo. period was adopted. This percentage is given in Table 1.

Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

Replacement of active groups in corn starch, as shown by results of the starch derivatives tested, impairs rather than improves the value of corn starch as a selective iron oxide depressant. Increased ability to depress iron oxides is generally accompanied by a parallel ability to depress quartz. PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.' From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch-chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. Lost foam casting is a process in which a polymeric material is formed into the shape of the part to be cast. Parts that are more complex are fabricated by simply gluing several patterns together. The pattern is then coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Finally, hot metal is poured into the pattern, evaporating the expanded polystyrene and taking the shape of the coating shell. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably landfilled. In this study, a process was developed for the recovery of expanded polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and pneumatic separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene. Key words: Casting, Lost foam process, Expanded polystyrene recovery

"PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe R C Harris Filtration Plant underwent an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability consisting of a series of underground tanks within stepped excavations 12m (39 ft) and 10m (33 ft) deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts.Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the proximal front footing at 4mm (1/6 in), (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Through extensive Fast Lagrangian Analysis on Continua (FLAC) and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept and met deflection concerns.GEOTECHNIQUEThe hillside site drops 14.5m (47.6 ft) over a distance of 53m (174 ft) between the existing Filter Building on the north and the Services Building on the south. The soils adjacent to the Filter Building consist of 6m (20 ft) of sandy fills, to the footing elevation, over compact sands and layered dense sands and silts to a depth of 10m (33 ft) below existing footing. Beneath the silts lies a 10m (33 ft) thick stiff clayey silt, 2m (6.6 ft) of sandy silt till (containing cobbles and boulders) and an artesian gravelly sand at a total depth of 30m (98.5 ft).The tender information was deemed inadequate to accurately determine soil parameters for a finite element analysis. As a result, the design-build team performed pre-tender Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT), including dynamic analysis. The CPT data indicated stratigraphy consistent with the conventional bore hole exploration (SPT results) however, the CPT data provided consistently superior soil strengths. The CPT data indicated the sands and silts were dense to very dense throughout their full thickness. The clayey silts below the sands were found to have shear strengths in the 100 to 200 kPa (14.5 to 29 psi) range with an Over-Consolidation Ratio (OCR) ratio of 1.5 to 2. The dynamic analysis, while low strain, indicated very competent behavior with Young’s Modulus values in the 200 to 350 MPa (29,000 psi to 51,000 psi) range. The CPT derived shear moduli and OCR values were vital in determining the soil engineering parameters used for the FLAC analyses."

Mines in the western United States have had limited choices for standing support. Wood cribs were often too soft and unstable. The introduction of the Can support in the earl v 1990s provided an effective alternative, (lilt/ it remains the dominant form of tail¬gate support. Water-filled prestressing cells are now used to cap the Can and preload it to provide an active roof load. The Cluster Prop, consisting of three timber wedge props bundled to¬gether; provides more capacity than (m equivalent sized Call support and improves transport efficiency. However the Cluster Prop is less stable and does not maintain a consistent load throughout its loading profile. Pumpable roof supports are another alternative support, but the \' have not been proven in high deformation en¬vironments. This paper compares the performance characteristics o f these various support systems.

"A novel reagent-free method of extracting gold from gravity middling concentrates in the Yukon placer fields is presented in this paper. This method exploits the malleability of gold by submitting concentrates to grinding in a rod mill. Brittle waste minerals are effectively reduced, whereas malleable gold particles are flattened and are then extracted by classification through sieves. Recoveries in the field using a laboratory-sized rod mill regularly exceeded 90%, whereas correlation laboratory tests indicated recovery to be most sensitive to the mill charge size. This method has broad potential, including application to the gravity circuits of large hard-rock processing circuits.RÉSUMÉ Cet article présente une nouvelle méthode sans agents réactifs d’extraction de l’or dans les concentrés gravimétriques mixtes que l’on trouve dans les districts placériens du Yukon. Cette méthode exploite la malléabilité de l’or en broyant des concentrés dans un broyeur à barres. Les déchets miniers cassants sont bien réduits, alors que les particules d’or malléables sont écrasées puis extraites par classification au travers de cribles. Si les récupérations sur le site à l’aide d’un broyeur à barres de laboratoire excèdent 90 %, les essais de concordance en laboratoire indiquent que la récupération est très sensible à la taille de la charge du broyeur. Cette méthode présente un grand potentiel, notamment une application possible aux circuits gravimétriques des grands circuits de traitement des roches dures.INTRODUCTIONExploiting the high density of gold to separate it from waste materials is the oldest known mineral processing technique. This basic technique is still widely used in gravity concentration circuits today; however, gravity processing invariably results in high-value middlings, especially in the Yukon placer gold fields. In addition to having a uniquely high density, gold is also the most malleable metal. This unique malleability can be exploited to extract gold from otherwise inaccessible gravity middlings.The Yukon placer gold industry has been continuously ongoing since the 1860s, and today produces approximately 60,000 oz t (1.87 million grams) of crude gold annually, most of which is from the Klondike region near Dawson City (Van Loon & Bond, 2014). It is important to note that Yukon placer miners do not use any chemical extraction methods; rather, gravity upgrading methods are the sole processing techniques used. Placer deposits are typically coarse, well liberated, and naturally gravity concentrated and recoverable, thus making more expensive chemical extraction unnecessary (Mitchell, Evans, & Styles, 1997). Furthermore, a strict permitting regime, environmental concerns, lack of expertise, and fear of repercussions from regulators prevent miners from attempting more advanced processing methods, such as flotation or cyanidation. Even simple chemical extractions like mercury amalgamation have not been implemented for decades, with one observer noting that, as many as 30 years ago, “the art of mercury for amalgamating appear[ed] to be dying [in the Yukon]” (Osler, 1983)."

"A unique DC electric arc rotary furnace with capacity 150 kg has been designed and constructed for the recycling of low-quality scrap and aluminum dross. The main constructive feature of this furnace is that the axially positioned graphite electrodes (cathode and anode) are placed 100 mm away from the rotation axis of the furnace. A specific characteristic of the construction is the possibility one of the electrodes (the anode) apart from moving axially (parallel to the furnace axis) to move at 90° outside the working space. High recovery rate of metal aluminum from aluminum dross (92%) was realized in this furnace. This is the reason for construction of industrial DC electric arc furnace.IntroductionThe consumption of aluminum waste has been rising continuously on a world scale, which is a great stimulus for the development of the technology for aluminum recycling.To recover the aluminum in dross, the conventional recycling process uses salt rotary furnaces heated with a fuel or a gas burner. This treatment process produces a secondary dross containing alumina, salts, impurities and a small amount of aluminum. Molten aluminum is tapped from the furnace and the residue is then dumped from the furnace. It has been the practice to dispose the residue in a landfill. Improvement of this technology, known as the oxy-fuel process, uses a gas burner enriched with oxygen to increase the thermal efficiency [1]. Recent studies show that the most efficient aggregate for recycling of aluminum scrap has turned out to be the rotary tilting furnaces, heated by plasma or electric arc, for which the use of flux is not necessary [2,3].Accordingly, there is a substantial need in the industry for an improved process for recovering free aluminium. It is particularly desirable that such process be cost effective and ecologically safe."

"Ti-5Ta-2Nb alloy and 304L austenitic stainless steel were joined by explosive cladding process. Investigations on 'as received' explosive clad revealed high hardness very near the interface due to martensitic transformation of 304L steel base plate. To improve ductility, explosive clads were heat treated in the temperature range of 823 to 1073 K for 1 to 20 h. Consequent change in the microstructure and microchemistry of the clad interface was studied. No change in the interface microstructure was observed for heat treatment at 823 K. Increase in temperature lead to the formation of various reaction zones at the interface, their number and width increase with temperature and time of thermal exposure. Growth kinetics of the reaction zones was monitored and activation energy required for formation was calculated. From elemental redistribution profiles, effective inter-diffusivities of alloying elements were calculated as a function of concentration and activation energy required for inter-diffusion was evaluated.IntroductionFor engineering components exposed to highly oxidizing and corrosive environments, a titanium based alloy i.e Ti-5Ta-2Nb (Ti-Ta-Nb) is often chosen as a structural material [1,2]. For economic consideration, vessels and piping exposed to non-oxidizing conditions are fabricated from 304L austenitic stainless steel (304L SS). Hence, dissimilar joint of Ti-5Ta-2Nb alloy and austenitic stainless steel becomes unavoidable. Fusion welding processes are not suitable for joining Ti and Fe based alloys due to the propensity for the formation of intermetallic phases and subsequent reduction in the bond strength [3,4]. Hence, explosive cladding, a solid state welding technique, was used to achieve high integrity, corrosion resistant joints between the two alloys."

Para tanto, a automatização dos processos que envolvem combustíveis é necessária, capaz de promover redução de custos, aumento de produtividade, confiabilidade e precisão nos dados e melhorias nas condições de trabalho na gestão e operação em combustíveis. Foi aplicada uma análise descritiva de um estudo de caso de um projeto de automação para esta finalidade implantado na empresa VALE S/A. Foi feita uma avaliação sistemática dos recursos, equipamentos e tecnologias necessárias a completa automação e integração dos processos que envolvem combustíveis e os ganhos alcançados após a implantação.

In order to hoist the ore according to grades, stope samples are taken. Three equidistant grooves are picked across the breast at right angles to the dip of the ore, the part removed being caught in the hand and then put into a small bag. When there is broken ore in the breast, the lines are continued down the pile and a small amount taken at intervals of the length of the sampler's pick handle. The quantity of sample from each breast will be between 2 and 3 Ib. If there are two grades of ore, bessemer and non-bessemer, there are two sets of brass checks for each chute, each check stamped with the number of the chute; one set of checks has the word "bessemer" and the other "non-bessemer." Before any ore is removed from the chutes, it is the duty of one man to see that the proper set of checks is at each chute in the mine. As each motor car is loaded, a check is attached to it. When the train reaches the shaft, the sample man removes the check on the first car, notes the grade, and directs the motorman to spot it over the proper pocket. The check is then hung on a hook with the number corresponding to the chute from which the ore came. The sample man throws a short rope with a knot in the end over the car and at the point where the knot falls a standard scoopful is taken. This is placed in a large bag that hangs directly under the hook containing the checks for that particular chute. These chute samples represent a check on the grading of the various contracts and by counting the tags a check is obtained on the miner's tally of the ore going into each chute; the total of the checks represents the hoist. During the stocking season, a standard scoopful is taken from each top tram car. This sample is taken in the same way as the chute samples at the plats underground. Top-of-car Samples These samples are taken by using a rope, preferably a clothesline, knotted each 18 in. of its length, and a hammer and a scoop. The standard scoop measures 31/2 by 21/4 by 11/4 in. and holds about 1/2 Ib. of ore. The rope, as applied to the usual railroad cars at the mine, is knotted into fifteen sections. "The Eh-pH diagram of lithium-titanium-water system at 25°C, 100 °C and 200 °C was constructed. It shows that there exist thermodynamic stability areas of Li2TiO3. This indicates a thermodynamic possibility for the formation of Li2TiO3 in aqueous solution. A hydrothermal process has been applied for the preparation of Li2TiO3 using TiCl4 and LiOH•H2O as raw materials. The prepared samples were examined with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that temperature and washing condition have significant effects on the phase composition of the product. Phase-pure Li2TiO3 powders were obtained at 200°C with Li:Ti molar ratio of 2.0.INTRODUCTIONLithium-containing ceramics enriched in 6Li, such as Li2O, LiAlO2, Li4SiO4, Li2ZrO3 and Li2TiO3, are considered as tritium breeding materials (Saito et al., 1998; Roux et al., 1998; Johnson et al., 1998; Hoshino et al., 2002). In view of its admirable properties: low-activation, good thermal stability and thermal conductivity, excellent tritium release performance and reasonable lithium atom density (Kopasz et al., 1994; Roux et al., 1996; Saito et al., 1998; Wu et al., 2008), Li2TiO3 is recognized as one of the most promising candidates of tritium breeding materials. Meanwhile, Li2TiO3, as the precursor of H2TiO3-type lithium absorbent, receives more attention as the development of extracting lithium from salt lakes (Zhong, 2004; Zhang, 2010).Several synthetic techniques have been applied to prepare Li2TiO3 powders, such as solid-state methods (Lulewicz and Roux, 2002; Ramaraghavulu et al., 2011; Mandal et al., 2012), sol-gel processes (Deptula et al., 2002; Lee, 2008) and solution combustion routes (Cruz et al., 2006; Jung et al., 2006; Sinha et al., 2010). A solid-state method may produce a series of problems, including impurity contamination and difficulty in morphology control of the obtained powders, although the process involved is simple. The solgel process is prolonged and usually demands for multi-step reactions, while solution combustion route requires plenty of energy and easily causes product contamination by the fuel used. Owing to its environmentally benign and highly suitable characteristics in fabricating materials, hydrothermal technology has been widely used and became a powerful tool in the field of material synthesis (Yoshimura and Byrappa, 2008). For example, ZnO in the form of bulk single crystals, fine particles and thin films, which is an attractive photoelectric material, was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process (Sekiguchi et al., 2000; Ohshima et al., 2004). A hydrothermal technique was also used to the preparation of carbon nanotube, which possesses outstanding mechanical, structural and electric properties (Bernholc et al., 1997), and is superior to the commonly used method (Gogotsi and Libera, 2000). There, it provides an option for preparing Li2TiO3. Laumann et al. (Laumann et al., 2010) synthesized cubic a-Li2TiO3 by hydrothermal reaction at 180 °C for 18 h, using TiO2 powder, comprising of anatase and rutile, and lithium hydroxide in de-ionized water. However, the prepared a-Li2TiO3 is extremely unstable with a maximum lithium loss of 75% when treated in bathing experiment."

The mining town of Pribram is situated in Central Bohemia, on the western slope of the Heiliger Berg. 30 miles southwest from Prague. Birkenberg, the village ill which most of the shafts and ore-dressing establishments are situated, is built on a mountain of the same name. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which arc intersectd by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, arid southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slate. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-called clay seam (lettenkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation L divided according to its harduess, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a confused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which are intersected by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, and southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slates. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-cal led clay seam (lettenkkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation is divided according to its hardness, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The, miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a contused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition ; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. Personnel management has undergone a remarkable change over the course of the past ten years. Personnel departments have played an increasingly important role, which today requires highly trained people and cannot be adequately served by the lesser qualified officials of yesteryear. Changes in the mining industry that stem from the demand for skilled labour to keep pace with technological developments and the mechanization of mines today demand that emphasis should be placed on the maximum utilization of manpower. Maximum utilization of manpower calls for more scientific and effective methods of recruiting, selecting, training, and placing workers so as to offer them the best opportunities for development and promotion, which naturally ensure a minimum labour turnover and eliminate labour unrest. This can be achieved only if well-qualified and properly trained personnel administrators are prepared to accept the challenge and apply themselves purposefully by assisting line mangement with the attainment of the company's corporate objectives.
