The feed ore is the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation of pyrite tailings, containing TFe47.47%, S19.41% and SiOpyrrhotite. The exploratory tests showed that using a process of flotation followed by magnetic separation could respectively obtain a sulphur concentrate of S 31.08% with a recovery of 82.89%, and an iron concentrate of TFe 59.97% and S 9.52%with a recovery of 30.93%. The reason of iron concentrates with high sulphur grade was that the sulphur grade of flotation tailings was 7.03%. So enhanced flotation for pyrrhotite was investigated in this research. Results show that when the natural pH of ore pulp varied from 5.5 to 6.0, a reagent combination of FS, LH, and BJ displayed the optimum flotation performance for pyrrhotite. After comparisons made on different flotation processing, the previous flotation flow of ?one roughing, one cleaning, one scavenging system and middling reprocessing?, was found, among others, to have the best flotation effect, as the grade and recovery of sulphur concentrate were 31.08% and 82.89%, respectively, and sulphur content of the flotation tailings was 7.03%. The above results indicated it was difficult to raise further the effect of flotation desulphurization. The authors therefore suggested that oxidizing roast should be adopted following the magnetic process for the purpose of further desulphurization. Besides, flue gas containing SO2 8.25%. The historic Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, SD, was closed in December of 2001, after 125 years of operation. Since closure, the mine has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the proposed host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. Pumps in the 8000-ft deep mine were shut off on June 10, 2003. Post-closure flooding of the mine has resulted in rising water levels that reached the 5000-ft level in July of 2007. The rate of water inflow into the mine is about 750 gal/min. A plot of water level vs. time shows that the rise has not followed an exponential decay curve. When the pumps are turned on for dewatering, the rate of water-level decline will be monitored. Water in the Homestake mine contains arsenic derived from arsenopyrite. In samples of mine water, the median concentration of arsenic was below the surface-water aquatic life standard for beneficial use.

Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :—About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri,I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr.. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. USE of autoradiography in diffusion studies offers the advantage that no repeated sectioning is necessary and that the analyses are performed in a simple manner over the continuous range of penetration depths. As part of a program of solid-state physics, it was desired to develop the autoradio-graphic method' quantitatively for use in diffusion studies. Results are reported here for the self-diffusion of silver. Silver was chosen because the existing data are good enough to evaluate the technique." The silver used in this investigation was obtained in the form of ¼ in. diam rods of polycrystalline material, 99.99 pct purity. The radioactive silver, Ag110 (ß, y), was obtained as the nitrate and converted to the chloride for use in a standard cyanide plating bath. The diffusion specimens were 1/2 in. lengths of the rod. The Bacterial Oxidation [(BIOX)] process for the pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery developed by Genmin, the mining division of Gencor, has been operating successfully at the Fairvew Mine since October 1986. The continuous operation of a pilot plant at Genmin Process Research has resulted in further process developmenst to improve plant operating efficiencies. These new developments, which include a higher solids content of the pulp feed to [BIOX], lower retention times, higher operating temperatures, lower power utilizaton for oxygen dispersion and reduced nutrient addition, have all been successfully implemented on the Fairvew plant. It has furthermore been confirmed that the arsenic precipitate formed in the neutralization of effluent solutions complies to the United States of America EPA standards. Contineous cyanidation pilot plant work conducted on [BIOX] product has indicated that cyanide consumption can be drastically decreased if a continuons flowsheet is implemented in preference to a batch leaching system.

Advanced Flotation Technology is the application driven design of flotation cells to achieve the optimum performance for each type and grind of flotation. This can be applied to roughers, scavengers, cleaners and specialty cells such as those to float hydrocyclone underflows in both primary and regrind circuits in order to reduce overgrinding. Standard, engineered, components are matched to provide mechanism design and cell dimensions for each case according to feed parameters and flotation type. Advances in process control have been achieved with high level controls and operator information data. This has gained a higher degree of understanding of cell operation and ore type being processed. Excellent results of this Advanced Flotation Technology in large scale porphyric copper ore have been achieved and designs through 7000 cu ft (200 m3) are currently available for high capacity concentrators. This paper will detail how flotation cells are more responsive to the exact requirements of the duty specified.

Begun in 1992, an abandoned and inactive mine inventory in the Black Hills National Forest has resulted in a hazard ranking of the most severely affected sites. For purposes of the inventory, the Black Hills were divided into three main regions: the northern Black Hills, with primarily gold mines; the central Black Hills, with pegmatite mines and some gold mines; and the southern Black Hills, with primarily uranium mines. A computerized data base has been developed along with standard forms for field crews. The forms were designed to provide maximum compatibility with other abandoned mine inventories on various federal and state lands. Measures recommended for the most hazardous and heavily affected sites include regrading of unstable slopes, fencing of open shafts, and remediation of the most severe acidic mine drainage problems. Specific examples are illustrated where remediation and safety measures were recommended or have been implemented. The vast majority of the sites, however, needed little or no remedial action.

Primary production blasting at Hamers- ley Iron began with seven inch holes at Tom Price in 1966 and has developed since then to large multiple row shots of 381 mm holes at Tom Price and 311 mm at Paraburdoo. Up to 1.3 million tonnes are initiated in a single blast with the average around 300,000 tonnes. Development can be traced through Anfo, AlAnfo, slurries, various boosters, initiation and delay techniques, hole loading and daily operating practices. A standard practice could be developed for the two mines for normal pro- duction blasts; this would not apply to such common variations as low "paddy" shots, pre- splitting, tight corners necessitating single row drilling etc. Because of ground variation three or even four sizes of drill holes may well be economic- al for blasting, even though this would be off set by complications in operation, supervision, store stocking and maintenance, particularly in Drilling.

The new mineral royalty regime for South Africa was signed into law in November 2008, with its main objective being to compensate the State for the depletion of public minerals through a royalty charge payable from 1 March 2010. The aims of this paper are to establish the potential impact of mining royalties on State revenues, industry affordability, and explore whether the dual formula system is likely to encourage miners to become refiners. It also measures the royalty dispensation against economists? tax standards in an attempt to make a judgement on the ?equity? of the new system. This paper argues that most stakeholders should be comfortable with most of the requirements of the Act for most of the time. However, the new regime is unlikely to motivate miners to become refiners, as the benefit of the reduced rate on refined minerals appears to be insufficient to justify the additional costs to refine the mineral resource to the prescribed states of beneficiation.

Laboratory experiments on the reverse combustion of tar sands in a linear adiabatic system have shown that a highly upgraded oil can be produced from an exceedingly viscous, immobile oil. The dependence on the air-injection rate of peak temperature, combustion-zone velocity, oil recovery, air-oil ratio, residual coke and oil, fuel burned and distribution of product gases is shown graphically. Eflects of initial temperature, oxygen concentration, oil saturation and heat loss are discussed. Experiments bearing on the coking properties of heavy oils are mentioned and some results exhibited. Field application of the process hinges on the existence of adequate air permeability and the rate of reaction under reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION It has been established that oil can be recovered from underground reservoirs by means of at least two fundamentally distinct methods involving in situ combustion of a certain fraction of the oil. Characteristic of both of these known methods is the production of oil from one or more wells by means of hot gases formed when a high-temperature reaction zone is advanced through the reservoir. In both cases, the reaction zone is created by heating certain of the wells to a sufficiently high temperature prior to the introduction of air, and the zone is maintained and advanced through the reservoir by appropriate control of the air-injection rate. In the first of these methods, which is called "forward combustion",' the combustion zone advances in a direction which is generally the same as that of the air flow; whereas in the second method, "reverse combustion",' the combustion zone moves in a direction generally opposite to that of the air flow. Forward combustion, on the one hand, is an ideal combustion process in the sense that a minimum of the most undesirable fraction of the oil is consumed as fuel in the form of coke, a clean sand is left behind and generated heat is used as efficiently as possible. However, the applicability of forward combustion is limited. Since the products of combustion, vaporized oil and connate water must flow into relatively cold regions of the reservoir, there is an upper limit on the viscosity of oil which can be moved by this process in a practical and economical fashion.' On the other hand, it is characteristic of reverse combustion that the vaporized oil and water together with the products of combustion are produced through sand which is already hot and has had its mobile liquid content eliminated. This means there is no upper limit on oil viscosity; indeed, the oil may be an entirely immobile semi-solid. However, fuel for the process is an intermediate fraction of the original oil, and the most undesirable fraction remains on the sand surface as a substantial deposit of coke. Since this coked material is not burned during reverse combustion, it represents energy which is available for the production of oil but is not used for this purpose. It follows that one can expect economics to be somewhat less attractive with reverse combustion than with forward combustion. Nevertheless, it is a process which is designed for reservoirs where forward combustion is impossible and, as such, has become a subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. In this paper, only experiments made with tar sands are discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS We proceed, then, to consider the process of reverse combustion in greater detail. Fig. 1 illustrates a temperature profile defining a combustion zone which moves from right to left when air flows from left to right. In Zone 1, the temperature is the initial reservoir temperature, and the tar sand is as yet unaltered. This statement must be modified to the extent that physical properties of the oil may be changed by low-temperature oxidation at reservoir temperature. As air passes into Zone 2, which has been warmed by conduction, it assists in vaporization of the very light ends (if there are any), and oxidation occurs at a significant rate. In this region, there is almost no production of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide because predominantly addition-type reactions take place with the formation of oxygenated compounds such as aldehydes and acids together with water. "Catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in combustion of coals was investigated in this paper. Catalytic combustion of four kinds of coals with different metamorphic grades by CeO2 was examined, suggesting that catalytic function of CeO2 increases with increase of metamorphic grade of the coals. One important reason for CeO2 promoting combustion of the coals is that pyrolysis of anthracite is advanced by CeO2, which not only raises the pyrolysis rate and pyrolysis conversion ratio, but increases contents of light components in pyrolysis gas; and both pore space and specific surface area of the pyrolysis char are enlarged by CeO2, which is another reason. In order to realize in situ catalysis for reducing catalyst consumption, it is crucial to increase catalyst particle number and enhance the bonding force between catalyst and coal. In addition, remarkable energy saving effect was observed when a nanometer calcium-based rare earth catalyst obtained by hydro-thermal synthesis was applied to catalytic combustion of coal injection into blast furnace.Introduction Coal combustion is acknowledged as one of the most important coal applications. Since addition of catalysts could reduce the ignition temperature of pulverized coal and accelerate the coal combustion, catalytic combustion is generally accepted as an effective measure to realize fast combustion of coal. Furthermore, different catalysts added may produce different effects on ignition temperature of coal. It is reported activity of catalysts with the same cation follows this order: OH->CO3 2->Cl->SO4 2-; while that of the catalysts which have the same anion follows: Cs+>Rb+>K+>Na+>Ba2+>Li+>Sr2+>Ca2+>Mg2+>Be2+ [1-4] .Due to the special physical and chemical structure, CeO2 plays an important role in the catalysis field. Many literatures point out that CeO2 not only has great catalytic effect on energy conversion, succeeded in catalyzing combustion of gaseous fuels such as CH4, CO, etc. but also can catalyze combustion of some liquid and solid fuels such as JP-10, black carbon, carbon deposit in the automobile exhausts and so on [5-9].Pyrolysis, the first step of combustion, directly influences ignition temperature and combustion rate of coals. So a great variety of catalysts were applied to catalyze pyrolysis of coals. And plenty of studies suggest that the alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds inherent in the coals show apparent catalytic effect on coal pyrolysis. Meanwhile, addition of alkali and alkaline-earth metals into coal combustion process also indicates obvious catalysis effect, accelerating coal pyrolysis, improving pyrolysis conversion ratio, increasing contents of pyrolysis gases and changing composition of the pyrolysis gases [10-15].Although alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds have good catalysis effect on coal combustion, their application in the catalysis field was limited because of their erosive attack to the combustion equipments. In contrast, CeO2, as a substitution of the traditional coal catalysts, presents widely potential application due to its good catalysis ability, non-corrosive and nontoxic. However, investigation on CeO2 catalyzing coal combustion is rarely reported. In this work, catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in coal combustion was studied, in an attempt to provide theoretical foundation for developing new catalysis technologies."

"Campbell Mine is dedicated to quality management in the form of a Continuous Improvement (CI) Operating Philosophy. This paper discusses that philosophy, why and how it is being implemented in the milling facility, and some of the challenges experienced to date. Examples of mill CI team projects and results are described. This paper describes practical experiences for those who are considering or are in the process of adopting a CI operating Philosophy.INTRODUCTIONCampbell Mine is 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Canada Ltd. The mine is located in Balmertown, Ontario approximately 300 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Campbell Mine has produced over s,000,000 ounces of gold since commencing operation in 1949. The operation is profitable and continues to be a major contributor to the gold production of Placer Dome Inc.At Campbell Mine, the concept of Continuous Improvement (CI) is being implemented to make further improvements to safety, quality, productivity, and subsequently profits. CI is not a ""program"". It is a way of doing business that concentrates on improving the system rather than finding fault and being resigned to the status quo.CI focuses on involving all employees in the decision making process and tapping their expertise to improve every facet of the business. In the past, many solutions were simple ""band-aid"" fixes treating the symptom, only to see the problem resurface again. With CI, solutions endeavour to address the root cause of problems and eliminate them permanently. Another primary goal is to eliminate unilateral decisions that benefit a small group but have a negative effect on the whole system."

The phase diagram of the Pseudobinary section PbTe-Fe was determined. It was found to contain a monotectic and a eutectic reaction, the latter one taking place at 14 at. pct Fe and 875° * 5°C. The solid solubility of iron in PbTe was found to be 0.3 at. pct by electronmicroProbe analysis. No solubility of PbTe was detected in iron. Slight deviations from true pseudobinary behavior were found to occur in the range of - 5 to 10 at. pct Fe. In the course of a general investigation of reactions of various metals with lead and tin telluride,' the lead telluride-iron system was reinvestigated. It had been established much earlier than iron does not chemically react with lead telluride but forms a eutectic with a melting point of 879" The eutectic composition or other related information has never been reported, but for a number of years iron has been in general use for contacting of lead telluride and lead telluride alloys for thermoelectric applications. It seems therefore desirable to clarify the exact constitution of the system to furnish a base for the long-term evaluation of bonds made between lead telluride and iron either by pressure contacting or by brazing methods. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lead telluride-iron alloys were prepared in 10-g charges, using premelted lead telluride. This material was prepared from high-purity, semiconductor-grade lead and tellurium obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and described as 99.999 pct pure. The iron used was "Armco" iron; the major impurities found here were 0.02 pct C, 0.018 pct Si, and 0.015 pct Cr. All remaining impurities were less than 0.01, the total of all impurities not exceeding 0.15 pct. Charges were prepared in closed quartz arnpoules which were evacuated and in some cases backfilled with high-purity argon to retard excessive lead telluride evaporation and deposition in slightly cooler parts of the ampoule. For high iron concentrations, this can lead to total separation of the constituents, since the vapor pressure and the sublimation rate of PbTe are quite high.4 Nevertheless, since the ampoules are closed, no change in overall composition was expected and the nominal composition of all alloys was assumed to be retained. X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis, and microsections were used in the evaluation of the alloys. The nature of the system was such that X-ray diffraction was not particularly helpful. It merely served to establish that at all concentrations PbTe and a! iron were in equilibrium at room temperature. Thermal analysis was carried out by taking direct temperature vs time curves on a Sargent recorder where a width of 10 in. was kept as 1 or 0.5 mv by use of an automatic bucking voltage network. Quartz ampoules with minimized dead space, coated with boron nitride and fitted with a thermocouple reentrant, were used as containers for the charge. At high temperatures and over long periods of time, boron nitride reacts with iron. For the thermal analysis runs, however, this was not significant. More significant was the fact that the vapor pressure of PbTe at some of the meas -uring temperatures apparently exceeded I atrn quite considerably. This, in some cases, caused the slightly softened quartz tubes to blow out if great care was not taken to contain them and minimize time and temperatures used. As containers pure nickel tubes were used which also served to avoid temperature gradients in the quartz ampoule. Nevertheless, the experimental difficulties at high temperatures were severe and the monotectic temperature could therefore not be determined accurately. In general, the accuracy reached by the thermal analysis setup in this case is *4"C as determined with gold, silver, and tin, under the conditions of analysis here. Inherently, the apparatus is capable of reaching accuracies better than i 1°C. Also, difficulties were encountered in microsection-ing. They were related to polishing, since it is rather difficult to avoid pulling the iron out of the weak and brittle lead telluride matrix. It proved best to follow a procedure where, after grinding to 600 grit on carborundum paper, a polish with 6 p diamond was used on nylon cloth. DR. W. F. GRAY (Contributed discussion, presented at meeting by Mr. S. C. Mifilen): Mr. Rowe's suggestion that the Institute should organize itself to interpret the needs of the mining industry to federal and provincial mines departments should commend itself to our membership as sensible and practical, and as one which these public administrative bodies may welcome. One has to start with the premise that those who head the departments of mines in question have the welfare of the industry at heart. Also, it must be postulated that the technical viewpoint of our membership is necessarily free of political considerations. With these reservations, one ventures to state that both Mr. Rowe in his communication to the present session of the Institute, and Professor M. Y. Williams in his earlier communication to the Western Meeting, on The Geological Survey and Mining Development (1), voice the regret general among our membership at the abandonment of the honoured name, and to some extent of the status, of the Geological Survey of Canada. The writer, in 1932, devoted his Presidential Address to the Institute to an appreciation of the value to Canadian mining of the Geological Survey of Canada (2), affirming the desire of the Institute "that the work of the Survey shall be maintained at the highest pitch of efficiency the resources of our country will permit, because, to scrimp expenses on the Survey, is 'to save at the spigot and lose at the bunghole'." He believes that is still the opinion of the Institute, and, if contraction of the usefulness of the Survey is feared by our members at this time, it is incumbent upon the Institute, in fairness to those who direct our government, to say so in precise and explicit terms. Mr. Rowe puts the situation pithily when he writes: "We have reached a stage in our development where a stock-taking and co-ordination of existing knowledge and data is essential. This is a part of that basic function of Dominion mineral technical services which is national and not provincial in its scope".

In presenting this paper for discussion at the Western Annual Meeting to be held in Edmonton, it is with the idea of creating a full and general discussion by the mining men in the Province as to the best way to eliminate, or at least hold down to a minimum, the dangerous coal-dust which is made in mining pitching seams in our Alberta mines by the chute method. Also, an alternative method is outlined, whereby the percentage of lump-coal mined can be increased, and the mining costs reduced-although the paper does not go into any detailed consideration of costs. The general trend of mining practice and lay-outs is at present towards mechanization, and the results being accomplished by the substitution of machines for manual labour are fully justifying the changes. In the technical mining journals, there are published from time to time papers dealing with a variety of methods of mining, which are descriptions of actual operations, and a great deal of interesting and valuable data is given as to the comparative values of the different methods, insofar as the percentage of grades of coal produced, the cost of production, etc., are concerned; but the mechanical methods described in these papers are nearly always suitable only for flat seams, or seams with a very low inclination.

A micropile and soil nail underpinning system was installed to support a building immediately adjacent to a 25-ft deep excavation in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Both the building and the underpinning were instrumented to monitor deflections, rotation and crack growth. The underpinned structure consisted of a two story concrete masonry unit (CMU) building founded on shallow spread footings attached to a concrete high-rise building on spread footing two floors below grade. The face of the excavation was 10 in. in front of the underpinned building foundation wall. The underpinning system consisted of small diameter hollow bar micropiles installed with injection grouting techniques below the bottom of the excavation and attached to the underpinned structure by a concrete pile cap doweled into the existing footing. The lateral loads imposed by the soil under the underpinned structure were designed to be supported by the soil nail wall installed through the micropiles during excavation. The settlement monitoring instruments consisted of crack gages, optical survey prisms, high sensitivity vibrating wire water levels and biaxial vibrating wire tilt meters. They recorded maximum movements of approximately 0.1 in. of settlement, 0.05 deg. rotation (top of wall rotating away from excavation) and up to 0.08 in. of crack opening during the excavation until one month after the soil nails and shotcrete facing were completely installed. This movement was well within both the estimated settlement and the estimated settlement tolerance of the underpinned structure.

Topography and geology greatly impact the decision of how to plan and operate a surface mine. To extract coal, five primary surface mrning methods are practiced in the United States. These include contour strip. mountamtop removal, area, modified area, and open pit mining methods. The first four approaches are commonly associated with coal mining while open pit techniques, although used in the mining of coal, are more commonly applied to the mining of hard rock, metals, and aggregates. Various sub-routines of the primary surface mining methods are likewrse applied rn the industry.

"Nickel granules are produced for carbonylation by pouring a molten stream into a path of high pressure water. Granules and water are separated in dewatering bins. The overflow, which contains up to 0.1 weight percent solids, was initially cooled and recycled to the granulating step. However, the rate of buildup of these solids in the handling system was intolerable. A lamella thickener was installed to solve the problem by removing solids from the dewatering bin overflow. Its description, application and performance to date are discussed.The lamella thickener treats a slurry containing about 0.1% solids of which about 30 weight percent is less than 325 mesh. It recovers 80 to 90 percent of the input solids in an underflow slurry containing 90 weight percent solids. Since its installation the frequency of cleanout of the recycle water handling system has dropped from about once per month to about once or twice per-year."
