The Ipueira III chrome mine is located in the northeastern part of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Extraction is actually at depths less than 300 m, but below level 200 serious environmental problems have been encountered with respect to control of air quality, toxic gas, dust and thermal comfort. At the request of the mining company the University of São Paulo started a research program to investigate the origin and occurrence of the critical problems and to propose solutions. A ventilation survey was carried out first which revealed the existence of several air leakages and short circuits that contributed to substantial reductions in the air supply to some of the main producing levels. Computer simulation of the ventilation network showed that extending the intake air shaft to deeper levels was the most convenient and economic solution to improve the air quality. The ventilation survey was followed by a mapping of the toxic gas emissions and thermal comfort levels in several parts of the mine. The air quality conditions were evaluated as a function of gas emission and heat generation associated with production and development activities. The results show that environmental conditions are already critical in most of the working levels and neither an increase in production nor deepening of the mine can be taken up without substantial changes in the ventilation system. INTRODUCTION Environmental concern is growing in Brazil and several underground mines are starting environmental engineering programs. The LACASEMIN - Laboratory of Environmental Control and Mine Safety of the Mining Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo - was contacted by Mineração Vale do Jacurici to start a research program for investigating the origin and occurrence of environmental problems that existed in the Ipueira III chrome mine. This research program involved field measurements of air quantities with gas levels monitoring, evaluation of heat stress parameters, determination of adequate flow patterns through computer simulations and training of mine technical staff. This paper presents the results of the first 4 months of this research program. The Ipueira III mine is located in the northeastern part of the state of Bahia, near the city of Senhor do Bonfim at about 400 km inland from the state capital city of Salvador. Chromite mineralization is quite widespread in this area and often associated with mafic and ultramafic rocks which cut across regional gneisses and migmatites. ROM production in 1992 varied between 25,000 to 40,000 tons per month, 25% being of lump type (38% of Cr2O3) and 75% being of fines. Lump is manually separated and fines are concentrated in a nearby plant. All the production goes directly to the group processing steel plants near Salvador. The Ipueira III mine is currently under some adverse economic situation because of imports from South Africa and Russia, which have better grades and sometimes a lower content of phosphorous. Consequently there has been little progress in the development of new mines and even in those currently under operation the extraction is becoming more difficult due to the lack of investment in improving mining methods and ventilation systems. In spite of such difficulties the company has backed up studies for initiating an environmental engineering investigation of the Ipueira III mine. MINING METHODS AND VENTILATION SCHEMES The mining methods adopted have changed as a function of extraction depth, rock mass strength and ore body geometry. This paper is a resume of some of the accomplishments in direct rolling of strip from molten metal, and a description of some experimental developments in recent years. In all the early developmental work, we used a pair of rolls with a bath of metal between them, maintained by flanges or plates at the ends of the rolls. These flanges produced an excess cooling of the metal and built up enormous pressures at this point as the metal went through the bight of the rolls. Many means were tried for compensating for this excess cooling, such as thickening the strip at the edges, heating the end dams directly or by flowing more of the molten metal against them, leaving an open crotch below the end dam and above the bight of the roll, where the excessive pressures built up could be relieved by some of the metal squeezing out at this point, and so forth. All of these helped somewhat to solve the problem, so that very large heats of many metals melting up to 200°F., having commercially uniform gauges, could be rolled up to 24 in. in width. The rolls were made by mounting heavy rings on heavy shafts, and pressures up to 75,000 lb. per inch in width were used. Cooling of the rolls was generally done by spraying water on the outside surface of the rolls that came in contact with the molten metal. Roll life was commercial with brass, barely satisfactory with copper, and totally impractical with steels. The greatest difficulty encountered in all this work was caused by lack of uniformity in the product, owing to a folding action in the mill. Those who are familiar with the operation of a rolling mill know that a bar entering a mill moves at a lower speed than the peripheral speed of the roll. However, the metal solidifying from a bath in a direct rolling mill is cast at exactly the peripheral speed of the roll. This results in irregular folding of the metal, some irregular remelting of the previously solidified sections, and it is difficult, if not impossible, in some cases to exert enough pressure to weld these folded sections sufficiently into a sound product. In addition to this melange of solid, semisolid and liquid metal in the bath, we know that pressure near the freezing point of any alloy in which the constituents have different melting points—and I believe all of them have—causes the lower-melling-point constituent to be squeezed back until it becomes cold enough to solidify and go through the mill. This segregates all alloys, the segregation increasing with the pressures and the freezing ranges of the metals. Add to these problems the excessive roll-maintenance costs with high-melting-point metals and then, the greatest difficulty of all, the vanity of homo sapiens where a matter of possibly large importance is being considered, and the problems seemed almost insuperable. It was long ago obvious to me that something much more than the size of a corporation's money and self-assuradce was necessary if this process was to be made commercial. I should like to show you first the performance of the only mill we ever really designed and built, to see what might be done with a well constructed mill. Ni–Mo ore is a black shale containing amorphous colloidal sulfides which have highly active. The oxygen pressure leaching behavior of nickel from black shale in aqueous media is presented. The effects of agitation speed, temperature, oxygen partial pressure and particle size on the rate of nickel leaching were determined. The results indicate that at low temperature hydrothermal and excess oxygen presence, the amorphous sulfides are easily oxidized to sulfuric acid and sulfate, and leaching nickel. The mathematical analyses of the experimental data for various experimental conditions indicated that the dissolution process was controlled by the chemical reaction during the early stage of dissolution, and was then controlled by liquid-film diffusion. In the initial stage of leaching, the reaction depends on oxygen partial pressure.

ThE superior performance of nonsag tungsten wire in lamps has been ascribed to the large-grained micro-structure that can be developed in it. The orientations of these large grains have been studied several times; most published data1-' appear to be similar to those plotted in Fig. 1. These new data were obtained by X-ray back-reflection Laue technique from all of the large grains occurring in thirteen different wires that had been heated at the lowest possible temperature for the formation of large grains. Here the wire axis is plotted in terms of the principal directions of the cube. Rosi decided that the preferred orientation of the large crystals could be described by a single ideal orientation, (531), being parallel to the wire axis.' Rieck2,3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Seigle argued that the data suggest that (211) is parallel to the wire axis instead of a single ideal orientation.5 This {211} contains the (531) ideal orientation and would appear to be a more general case. Ahlborn and Wassermann report that their orientation data stretch from ( 110) through (531) to (311) 8 This is part of the locus of (211). All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by back-reflection Laue techniques. They have all obtained essentially similar results. On the other hand, Swalin and Geisler, who obtained their data by neutron diffraction, indicated that the preferred orientation of the large grains in doped wire is (110) .7 These findings cannot presently be reconciled with the pole density data described in the previous paragraph. Rosi1 and Rieck2 have advanced arguments about how their orientations could occur. Nevertheless, the crystallographic link between the (110) (cold-worked) fiber texture and the preferred orientation of the large grains has remained missing. This link can be provided through the concept of coincidence-type boundaries. Such boundaries separate two grains that have a certain number of common lattice sites. Coincidence relationships that result from rotations about low index directions are given by Brandon et a1 .' What is desired is a calculation of those orientations that bear a coincidence relationship with the (110) fibers of the cold-worked matrix. This situation arises in the following fashion. Heating the tungsten wire for a combination of time and temperature falling short of the formation of the nonsag structure yields a structure that is still fibrous in nature and the preferred orientation remains (110). During grain growth, the growing grain is in contact with these fibers. It is hence possible that the entire process may begin by the passage of a coincidence boundary into a (110) fiber. The calculations were carried out analytically and checked graphically. Following Brandon et a1.,8 coincidence relationships from 1 in 5 to 1 in 19 have been considered. The results of the calculations are given in Fig. 2. Of the coincidences examined, some of those occurring upon rotation about ( 110) come closest to the experimental points in Fig. 1. Nineteen of the twenty-three data points in Fig. 1 can be attributed to the ideal orientations A, B, C, and D in Fig. 2. As determined analytically, three crystals lie within 4 deg of point A, four lie within 21/2 deg of point B, eleven lie within 5 deg of point C, and one lies within 1 deg of point D-a total of nineteen. The off-lying points are near the |110| point of the triangle.

The chromalographic effect refers to the separation of constituents in a moving fluid phase which occurs when the phase is passed over a stationary phase, either solid or liquid, or large areal extent. In performing chemical analyses, the large surface contact areal is provided in the case of gas-solid chromatography by-passing the gas over a porous solid and for gas-liquid chronla tog rap hy by-passing the gas over a porous solid which has been coated with a nonvolatile liquid. The porous medium is usually placed in a cylindrical tube, although it may be a relatively flat sheet as in paper chroma-tography. According to one theory,' the separation results from the difference in time spent by various components in the stationary phahe. A gaseous component which is conlpletely insoluble in the stationary phase, or is not adsorbed on the solid, proceeds unimpeded through the column. The versatility and power of the various types of chromatogruphy for the analysis of complex mixtures are evident from their widespread use in performing chemical analyses and from the large number of symposia, books, and papers devoted to the subject in recent years. Associated developments are the application of chromatography to the determination of heats of solution, heats of adsorption, solubilities orK-values, etc. Gas-liquicl chromatography analyses may be characterized by the manner in which the samples are introduced and displaced from the column'. The three techniques used are known as (1) frontal analysis, (3) displacement analysis, and (3) elution analysis. The frontal analysis is performed by displacing an inert gas from the column by a continuous stream of the sample. As indicated in Fig. l(A), all but the first fraction leaving the column represent mixtures rather than pure components. The displacement analysis is conducted by filling the column with a sample, then displacing it with a more strongly adsorbed or absorbed vapor. The resulting chro-matogram is illustrated by Fig. 1(B). Finally, in the elution analysis a small sample of the mixture to be analyzed is introduced as a "plug" into a Rowing stream of carrier gas to give an elution-type chromato-gram. Fig. l(C). The three techniques may be used to provide models to which Row patterns in other physical situations may be compared. PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether natural reservoir rocks, when coated with crude oil, provided sufficient surface areas to give rise to a chromato-graphic separation of light hydrocarbon constituents. The tests were conducted with the light hydrocar-bons in the gaseous state. SANDS TESTED Two sands of widely different permeabilities have been studied: (1) Ventura core (16 md), and (2) Torpedo sandstone core (578 md).Table 1 gives a description of the cores that were tested. With the exception of one frontal-type flow arrangement which was performed on Core 3, the tests were of theelution-type in which a methane-propane mixture was eluted through the core by means of helium. The Ventura core, when impregnated with a weathered crude from the same field, became so impermeable to gas flow that it was necessary to conduct the tests on the granulated cores (Cores 2 and 3).

A ceramic product or processed material is a solid composed of materials which have been subjected to heat above 468.3°C (875°F). The raw materials, which are blended together (or in some cases used singly), are selected and utilized for various reasons such as ease of fabrication, aid to processing, to yield desired properties after processing, lack or controllable degree of toxicity or hazard, availability, cost, and perhaps other considerations. Almost all solid inorganic, some organic, and some liquid and gaseous materials have the potential to be used individually in some ceramic product. There are several fundamental functions to be fulfilled in every ceramic product and a number of secondary functions are desirable in specified products. These functions are generally met by the most widely occurring minerals and rocks of the earth and their debris. This fact characterizes ceramics as a field utilizing the raw materials most available to man. Of course, specified products utilize synthetics, organics, and rare inorganics to produce desired results. Any solid nonmetallic product processed by subjection to temperature above a red heat may be called a ceramic product. Widely used construction materials and units, domestic utensils and units, industrial parts to facilitate manufacture, technical components, and aesthetic creations are very often of a ceramic nature because of their durability, inertness, hardness, ease of fabrication, cost, and availability of the ingredients. Often, organics or metals cannot meet desired specifications for some of these products. The rocks and minerals and mineral debris of the earth are largely siliceous. Oxygen and silicon comprise roughly 75% of the earth's crust with aluminum, iron, calcium, and the alkalies following in abundance. Silica (SiO2) and silicates can be melted to form glasses. Alumina (A1203), present in a mineral compound, gives greater durability, hardness, and strength, but lessens the glass-forming property. Iron, calcium, and the other alkalies flux silica and reduce melting points. Thus sand, which is generally almost pure SiO2, and clay, which is generally hydrated alumina silicate, are the most widely used of all ceramic raw materials-principally because of the glass-forming propensities of silicates. In ceramic formulations, clay is generally a refractory filler or skeletal material, having in the raw state a plasticity derived from its colloidal grain size and its water-loving nature. On the other hand, silica sand is a glass former or nonplastic filler. Clay and silica sand in pure forms are quite refractory, i.e., not easily melted. Clay, although siliceous, is less of a glass former than pure silica and is more refractory. Natural contaminants, such as iron oxide or limestone, adulterate many clays and some sands. These contaminants act as fluxes and reduce the fusion points of the mineral or blends. Glass is made from silica sand by fluxing the sand with strong bases, usually soda ash and limestone. Red building bricks are hard and durable because the sand and clay have been partially fused with help of natural iron oxide serving as a flux. The iron oxide performs a dual function, serving as a pigment as well as a flux. In a blend of clay and sand and iron oxide, the sand is more susceptible to fusion than is the clay. Although silica sand and clay are the most widely used raw materials in most ceramic products, many other minerals, and some nonminerals are utilized in products where these materials can produce or aid in achieving desired results. The Eldorado Epidemiology Project formally began in late 1978. It consists of a retrospective cohort study, to be followed by and to leave in place the mechanism for a prospective cohort monitoring program. These present and future activities are intended to merge into one another. The current study includes all Eldorado employees past and present for whom records are available. The objectives of the undertaking are - 1) to obtain cause-and-effect, dose-response data with which to evaluate the risks to workers in radon and radon daughter containing atmospheres, and to provide additional quantitative information on which to base possible improvements in working conditions; 2) to identify any dead employees of E.N.L. whose cause of death suggests that a potential compensation claim right exists for their survivors, and to similarly identify living ex-employees of E.N.L. whose work histories and states of health suggest potential compensation claim rights. The nature of the study has been determined by the history of Eldorado, which will be described briefly. Eldorado began (as Eldorado Gold Mines) in the late 1920's, operating relatively unsuccessfully in Manitoba. In 1930-31 the emphasis shifted from gold to uranium, and what became the Port Radium mine was first staked. From the very early 1930's until 1942 the company's purpose was almost entirely devoted to the mining of pitchblende - uranium ore - from the Port Radium site, and the extraction of radium from this ore at the Port Hope refinery in Ontario, a process from which the uranium was a largely stockpiled byproduct. In 1942 the company was requested by the Canadian government to accelerate the production of ore, and of uranium. At the same time, all its stockpile of uranium (then being stored in silos as a "waste" product which might later "come in") was acquired for the Manhattan Project. In 1944 the company shares were bought by the Canadian government and the company itself became Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944) Limited; it has operated as a Crown corporation ever since. The name was changed to Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1968. The Port Radium mine was closed in 1960, and since 1953 the Beaverlodge uranium mine complex has operated on the northern shores of Lake Athabasca. Radium production was discontinued in 1954 when the radium circuit was taken out of the refinery, and since that time the refinery's products have been various types of refined uranium (uranium dioxide, uranium trioxide and uranium hexafluoride) plus metallic uranium. The refinery, of course, processes the company's own yellowcake but as it is one of only five refineries in the western world, most of its work consists of custom refining for a large variety of customers. In addition to the mining and the refining operations, there have been three other divisions involved, and these are, respectively, Aviation, R. & D., and Exploration, in addition to the financial, corporate, administrative and support activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS The human study population (Abbatt, J.D. et al., 1980) consists of all Eldorado employees who have ever worked for E.N.L. and for whom records are available. The total nominal roll to December 31, 1980 is approximately 21,000 and consists of employees of the Mining, Refining, R. & D., Aviation and Exploration Divisions, as well as a relatively small number of other employees (Head Office, etc.). The basic epidemiologic design, as has been mentioned, is for a retrospective cohort study merging into a prospective cohort study, and depending very heavily upon automated record linkage and file matching. The original design called for an initial assembly of the bulk of the nominal roll, prior to the first of two matches with the National Mortality File. The first of these two matches is now complete and the second is to be separated from it in time by 18 months to two years. The second match will be the definitive match prior to the analysis, the interpretation of the data, and the publication of the results. The period between the two matches was designed to permit completion of the nominal roll, including: - addition of previously missing individuals and groups, elimination of duplicates, and amplification of identifying information, - assembly of work histories and exposure information for each individual, - digestion and application of lessons and modifications resulting from the first match with the National Mortality File at Statistics Canada, - preparation of files for the definitive second match. The analysis of data will be carried out by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Epidemiology Unit based at the University of Toronto. This group, with whom Eldorado Nuclear has a memorandum of understanding, have for a variety of reasons, including their familiarity with record linkage and their expertise, been members of the Project Team since

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

The primary reason pigments are used in plastics is to impart a desired color to the plastic. Color is one of the more important assign considerations associated with today's market oriented society. Secondary reasons for adding pigments to plastics include: 1. Improved UV stability 2. Enhancement to selected physical properties 3. Changes in optical properties Pigments may be used at loadings as high as 20% or as low as .001%. Generally the loading levels are between 0.2% and 2.0%. Pigments may be added to the plastic either by the manufacturer of the plastic, or by the user of the plastic. If the customer buys material that is already colored, it is referred to as "pre-colored". If the customer buys uncolored plastic and adds colorants, the process is referred to as "in-house" coloring.

The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

THE difficulties inherent in table concentration operations as applied to gold, silver, lead and zinc ores, are accentuated in the scheelite mill, which has a flowsheet that is similar in general principles. The narrow "spread" in the specific gravity between scheelite and the usual gangue in which it occurs often makes its clean separation extremely difficult and in some cases impracticable. The problem is further complicated by the extreme friability of the mineral and its inordinate tendency to "slime," particularly where fine grinding is necessary and wet grinding methods are employed. The physical aspect of the occurrence of scheelite in the ores, the kind and character of the rock in which the mineral is present, its hardness, friability and the specific gravity of its constituents, as well as like characteristics of the associated mineral-spyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and others, all have a bearing on the successful milling of crude ores and the production of a concentrate that is marketable with minimum price penalty or none at all. Most tungsten deposits are considered low grade when the limiting factor of low percentage recovery by gravity methods is borne in mind. The great majority of deposits developed or in process of development carry from 0.4 to 1.0 per cent tungstic oxide. Ore carrying 1 per cent is considered good grade; 0.7 to o.8 per cent, fair, and below that figure, low grade. Steady mill feed averaging upward of 1.0 per cent WO3 is exceptional. Inasmuch as buying specifications demand a 60 per cent WO3 content, the mineral content of the ores as mined must be concentrated to at least that degree. A few companies have constructed chemical plants for the treatment of their complex concentrates and low-grade flotation product, but the smaller operator must rely on table concentration, borrowing the tools and to a large extent the methods of his predecessors in the gold, silver, lead and zinc mills. Whether these are the best tools and methods that can be devised is an open question. Except in rare instances, table concentration, however carefully conducted, does not yield a satisfactory final recovery of the mineral content in headings as indicated by chemical determinations of tungstic oxide content. A saving of 6o to 65 per cent is considered fair, and an average 80 per cent recovery, exceptional. Each scheelite ore body is a separate problem. Details of handling that give best results in one case may not be successfully operative at a property on the same contact zone and but a short distance removed. Supplementary treatment of tailings by flotation may be successful in producing a low-grade concentrate of around 15 per cent W03, which is adapted to further treatment chemically at a given property and entirely unsuccessful at another. This problem constitutes another of the unanswered questions. The following paragraphs relate solely to the beneficiation of scheelite ores by table concentration and supplementary methods.

The difficulties inherent in table concentration operations as applied to gold, silver, lead and zinc ores, are accentuated in the scheelite mill, which has a flowsheet that is similar in general principles. The narrow "spread" in the specific gravity between scheelite and the usual gangue in which it occurs often makes its clean separation extremely difficult and in some cases impracticable. The problem is further complicated by the extreme friability of the mineral and its inordinate tendency to "slime," particularly where fine grinding is necessary and wet grinding methods are employed. The physical aspect of the occurrence of scheelite in the ores, the kind and character of the rock in which the mineral is present, its hardness, friability and the specific gravity of its constituents, as well as like characteristics of the associated minerals— pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and others, all have a bearing on the successful milling of crude ores and the production of a concentrate that is marketable with minimum price penalty or none at all. Most tungsten deposits are considered low grade when the limiting factor of low percentage recovery by gravity methods is borne in mind. The great majority of deposits developed or in process of development carry from 0.4 to 1.0 per cent tungstic oxide. Ore carrying I per cent is considered good grade; 0.7 to 0.8 per cent, fair, and below that figure, low grade. Steady mill feed averaging upward of I .o per cent WO3 is exceptional. The ?-to-? transformation has been studied in zirconium alloys containing 22 to 70 wt pct U. In this range of compositions the ? phase can be retained by quenching. Transformation to ? occurs by a nucleation-and-growth process. The diffusion of atoms to preferred lattice sites to yield a partially ordered structure apparently controls the rate of reaction. Alpha uranium and a zirconium precipitate from the supersaturated E phase initially formed in alloys outside the equilibrium E phase composition limits. ZIRCONIUM-Uranium alloys have long been of interest for reactor-fuel applications because of the low thermal-neutron cross section of zirconium. Considerable information is available on the various properties and behavior of these alloys1 although there had been a number of areas where information was incomplete. As part of a program to provide more detailed knowledge in these areas, the presently reported investigation was undertaken. The constitutional diagram of the zirconium-uranium system is shown in Fig. 1.' The system is distinguished by a region of complete solid solubility between the body-centered cubic ß-zirconium and ? uranium phases and the existence of an intermediate phase in the vicinity of 50 wt pct U. This intermediate phase, designated as E, is reported3 to have a primitive hexagonal structure with a = 5.03 and c = 3.08A. The structure is partially ordered with zirconium atoms at the 0, 0, 0 position and zirconium and uranium atoms located randomly at the 1/3, 2/3, 1/2, and 2/3, 1/3, 1/2 positions. While the E phase may be nominally designated as of UZr2 stoichio-metry, the random distribution of uranium and zirconium atoms permit a considerable range in composition. Of interest in the research performed were alloys in the range from 20 wt pct (10 at. pct) to 70 wt pct (47 at. pct) U. In this range of compositions the body-centered-cubic ? phase can be retained either completely or partially on quenching. The nature and kinetics of transformation of the ? phase were the subject of study. Proceeding concurrently with the presently reported work was an investigation by Kearns4 which has since been reported. Kearns studied alloys containing 50 to 60 wt pct U prepared from sponge zirconium. While the work reported here is for alloys prepared from crystal-bar zirconium and the techniques of study are to some extent dissimilar to those employed by Kearns, general agreement so far as results and interpretation can be reported. Experimental Techniques—Alloys were prepared and the transformation of the ? phase studied during interrupted-quench and quench-and-temper isothermal heat treatments by means of hardness measurements and X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. The isothermal transformation of the ? phase on quenching and tempering was investigated further employing dynamic-modulus measurements. Electrical resistivity and limited Hall coefficient measurements were also obtained as part of the study. Alloy Preparation and Heat Treatment— Alloys containing 15, 20, 22, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 70 wt pct U were prepared from as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium. The alloys were double arc melted by consumable-electrode are-melting techniques. The final ingots were forged and rolled at temperatures between 790" and 840oC to 1/4-in. rod and 1/8-in. sheet. "Metals have been mined as ores since pre-history but metal production has increased dramatically in modern times driven by expanding Global GDP. Metal ore mining produces large amounts of waste rock and mine tailings. Mine tailings are the wastes produced after extracting the desired metal from the ore. There are several ways of dealing with this waste, and Ritcey (2005) identifies the following possibilities, land-based storage, backfill to the mine, deep lake disposal and marine disposal. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), both Misima and Lihir Mines adopted the marine disposal option, releasing tailings through a submerged pipe onto the sea floor. This special case is referred to as Deep Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP) in which the tailings deposition is sufficiently deep as to be below the euphotic zone. The most important aspect of deep sea tailings placement is that the tailings are deposited at great depth where exchanges between the seabed and the surface layers are small. The first quantitative multidisciplinary study of tailings impact on the deep sea was carried out from 2006 to 2010 in Papua New Guinea. The physical, chemical and biological work carried out has placed PNG at the forefront of research into the assessment and management of deep-sea environmental impacts related to mining in PNG. The study has provided data which has led to a better understanding of the ecological and geochemical processes in deep water that accompany DSTP in PNG and provided baseline data on deep-sea ecosystems in a scientifically poorly known tropical ocean. Additionally, guidelines on best practice for DSTP have been developed Here we present geochemical data obtained from sediment samples from the marine environment surrounding Lihir and Misima Islands."

When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.

A campanha dos refratários à base de carbono aplicados como revestimento de trabalho de diversos equipamentos siderúrgicos depende da soma de diversos fatores como resistência à corrosão, resistência à oxidação do carbono, estabilidade termomecânica, entre outros. Durante a etapa de aquecimento inicial de revestimentos refratários novos ocorre a oxidação prematura do carbono presente no revestimento refratário, reduzindo a vida útil do revestimento precocemente. Para reduzir a oxidação precoce do carbono foi desenvolvido um novo coating cerâmico que atua como uma eficiente barreira física, reduzindo o contato do oxigênio da atmosfera de aquecimento com o carbono presente no refratário. O coating desenvolvido possui uma fase ligante com pega química ativada termicamente e possui como carga refratária um composto sílico-aluminoso com elevada estabilidade térmica. Os resultados laboratoriais de avaliação de desempenho revelaram que com a aplicação do novo coating desenvolvido reduz-se a oxidação prematura do carbono em até 77% e elevase a vida útil do revestimento em alguns casos em até 15%. O coating desenvolvido revelou possuir excelente desempenho quanto a proteção do refratário MgO-C contra a oxidação do carbono que ocorre durante a etapa de aquecimento de equipamentos com refratários novos, comprovando sua aplicabilidade em diversos equipamentos siderúrgicos que possuem revestimentos refratários à base de carbono.

"The proportion of refractory sulphide ores and concentrates in world gold mining industry is growing every year. Pressure oxidation of these materials (in autoclave) allows to oxidize gold hosting minerals. Traces of halides and pseudohalides present in the slurry liquids contribute to formation of complex gold compounds. Sorption-active carbon present in ores leads to irreversible adsorption of complex gold compounds and their loss. The objective of the research is to study gold extraction dependence on the concentration of chloride-, cyanide- and thiocyanate-ions in the slurry liquids during pressure oxidation. Double refractory flotation concentrate of the Bakyrchik deposit was used for the testwork. The research was planned on the basis of a full factorial experimental design with additional refining experiments. Ligand concentrations (0 – 1000 mg/l Cl-, 0 – 600 mg/l CN-, 0 – 1200 mg/l of SCN-), temperature (200 – 240 °?) and retention time (1 – 6 h) were used as variables of pressure oxidation process. It was determined that sulfide minerals oxidize much faster than ""organic"" carbon. Under the conditions of T = 240 ?C, t = 2 h, sulphide sulfur oxidation was 95.6%, while ""organic"" carbon oxidation was 46.1 %. Each of the examined ligands has a significant adverse impact on gold extraction. Analysis of the experimental data demonstrated that with a high degree of confidence (R2 = 0.883) gold extraction does not depend on the ligand type, but only on its concentration and the ""organic"" carbon oxidation degree. In case of complete oxidation of ""organic"" carbon, the presence of the ligand (L = Cl-, CNS-, CN-) in the liquids at a concentration of up to 20 millimole/L does not significantly affect gold extraction. The assumption that the main factor of preg-robbing in ???-CIL treatment of double refractory concentrates is the natural ""organic"" carbon sorption-active to gold has been confirmed. INTRODUCTION In recent decades, placer gold mining has been gradually declining and hardrock gold mining, including ""refractory"" gold mining, has been growing all over the world, as well as in the Russian Federation (http://www.miningworld.ru, 2015). One of the main reasons why gold ores are refractory is gold adsorption on natural carbonaceous materials (""organic carbon"").
