The classical explanation for formation of the fine equiaxed "chill zone " in ingot solidification is that local supercooling near the chill wall causes copious nucleation in this region. This work indicates, however, that convection is an essential element in formation of the chill zone. In the absence of convection, no chill zone forms even though rate of. heat extraction is extremely vapid. Alloy studied was Al-l.5 pct Cu alloy solidified against a copper chill wall. When solidification was initiated at the chill wall in absence of. cor-vection, surface grain size was large (>I cm diam). When it was initiated in the presence of convection, it was fine (<0.05 cm diam). It is concluded that some form of "crystal multiplication" plays an important role in formation of the chill zone. INGOT macrostructures are generally classed as containing one or more of the three zones: "chill zone", "columnar zone", and central "equiaxed zone". These three zones are sketched in Fig. 1; their origin has been discussed in some detail.&apos;-&apos; The classical explanation for formation of the chill zone is that supercooling occurs in the region of liquid metal adjacent the mold wall, and copious nu-cleation then takes place in this region forming numerous small crystals. The columnar region then results by growth of favorably oriented grains (den-drites) which crowd out their less favorably oriented neighbors."5 The mechanism of the columnar-equiaxed transition has been the subject of considerable interest. The generally accepted mechanism, until recently, was that constitutional supercooling developed in front of the growing columnar grains with eventual nucleation of new, equiaxed, grains ahead of the growing solid front.&apos; Recently, it became evident this explanation was not completely satisfactory and it is now evident that "crystal multiplication" plays an important role. This crystal multiplication occurs by separation of dendrite arms from growing dendrites,8?"&apos; and has been shown to be strongly influenced by convection.6, 10-13 Reduced convection results, for a given alloy, in longer columnar zone, larger columnar grains, and larger equiaxed grains.7, 12

Large scale mining of Mesabi taconites may have moved nearer to realization with the arrival of the latest model Linde Jet-Piercing machine at Reserve Mining Co.&apos;s Babbitt, Minn. property. When the machine is placed in operation it is expected to pierce blast holes in the hard taconite beds up to 10 times faster than is possible with existing drilling equipment. The new primary blast hole drilling machine has been designated the JPM-3, and is the successor to the JPM-1, in operation at Erie Mining Co.&apos;s taconite mines at Aurora, Minn. The size of primary blast holes which can now be pierced has increased from a nominal 61 in. diameter to 71 in. diameter and maximum hole depth has increased from 35 ft to 47 ft. Development has progressed to where 71/2 in. holes can be pierced with the same speed as 61/2 in. holes. Piercing progress is controlled by electronic blowpipe descent controls. Other features of the JPM-3 include: automatic burner ignition from the operating cab; heated and air conditioned operating cab designed for all-year operation; mechanical improvements for sub-zero operation common to the Mesabi, and redesign of wearing parts for longer service with minimum maintenance. The 40-ton machine is self-propelled. Power, oxygen, and cooling water lines trail from the machine. Jet piercing is based on combustion products of oxygen and a liquid fuel such as kerosene. The flame, jetting from a burner at speeds of about 6000 ft per sec, disintegrates layers of spallable rock. The burner is cooled by water which is then directed through orifices around the periphery of the burner. The water changes to steam and carries the spallings out of the hole. The equipment used in Jet-Piercing is essentially a tractor-mounted blowpipe containing a combustion chamber and nozzle, which is in effect a miniature rocket motor, from which the supersonic combustion gases emerge to do their work.

The Mg-Si and Mg-Ge phase diagrams were rede-levtnined by thermal analysis, and the existence of a single congruent melting compound in each system was confirmed. The melting points of the two compounds Mg2Ge and ,Wg2Si were found to be 1117.4° and 1085.0°C respectively. The euteclics for the Mg-Ge system occur at 635.6°C (1.15 at. pcl Ge) and 696. 7°C (64.3 at. pct Ge); for the Mg-Si system the eutectics are at 6376°C (1.16 at. pct Si) and 945.6°C (53.0 al. pcl Si). The phase diagrams and known thermodynamic data were used to calculate activity values for both systems. The activities calculated for the Mg-Ge system agreed very well with those previously published. Partial molar enthalpy values for the Mg-Si systetn were calculated from the phase diagram for the composition region where no experimental values have been reported. THE phase diagram for any system is an important source of thermodynamic data. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek1 have derived equations which permit calculation of the activity in binary systems with an inter-metallic compound! if the liquidus and enthalpy data are known. The thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems have recently been determined in this by by an isopiestic method, and it was considered that it would be interesting to compare these directly determined values with those computed from the phase diagram. The basic features of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems are essentially similar. The one intermediate compound present in each system. Mg2X, crystallizes in the antifluorite structure and melts congruently. Raynor4 has accurately determined the temperature and composition of the magnesium-rich eutectic in both the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems. Klemm and West-linning5 investigated the entire Mg-Ge liquidus, employing sintered alumina crucibles; the purity of the magnesium and germanium starting materials was not reported. The melt was not stirred, and the temperature was automatically recorded to an accuracy of ±3°C. The authors reported large weight changes due to magnesium evaporation between 50 and 67 at. pct Mg. The Mg-Si system has been studied by a number of investigators, and the results have been compiled by Hansen and Anderko.6 Significant discrepancies exist between the two principle investigations of voge17 and Wohler and Schliephake.8 Two different grades of silicon were used by Vogel, one of 99.2 pct purity and the other quite impure, containing 6 pct Fe and 1.7 pct Al. The magnesium purity was not specified. The melts were contained in graphite crucibles with porcelain thermocouple protection tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen. Samples weighing 10 g were rapidly heated to 50° to 100°C above the liquidus: held, and then rapidly cooled without stirring. Accuracy was ±1 at. pct which is equivalent to a maximum error in temperature of ±18°C. Wohler and Schliephake used 97.9 pct Mg and 99.48 pct Si. The graphite crucibles contained a stirrer and the 15-g samples were melted under an atmosphere of streaming hydrogen. The samples were chemically analyzed after each run. Because of the scarcity of the data, the impurity of the starting materials, and the resultant uncertainty and inconsistency in the published liquidus values, it was decided to undertake a reevaluation of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si phase diagrams by thermal analysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd.) with impurities in ppm: 20 Al, 30 Zn, 10 Si, <1 Ni, <1 Cu. <10 Fe; 99.999 pct Ge (United Mineral and Chemical Corp.), and 99.999 pct Si (Wacker Chemie Corp.). All graphite parts were machined from high-density (1.89 g per cu cm) G-grade graphite obtained from Basic Carbon Corp. with a total ash content of 0.04 pct. Boron nitride parts were machined from rods of National-grade H.B.N. boron nitride. All graphite and boron nitride pieces were baked out under running vacuum at 1100°C for 24 hr before us Cylindrical graphite crucibles (1; in. OD, 23/4 in. long, l3/8 in. ID) were tightly closed with threaded graphite covers which had 21/4-in.-long thermocouple wells and 1/4-in.-diam off-center holes for stirrers. The cover and thermocouple well were machined from a single piece of graphite. A stirrer was made from a flat cylindrical graphite plate perforated with five 3/16-in.-diam holes and a 1/2-in.-diam central hole, and was held parallel to the crucible bottom by a 1/4-in.-diam. 4-in.-long graphite rod which screwed into the plate and extended up through a tightly fitting hole in the crucible cover. An iron core enclosed in a glass capsule was attached to the stirrer with an 18-in.-long molybdenum wire, so that the stirrer could be magnetically raised and lowered from outside the system. One crucible and stirrer with essentially the same dimensions given above was made entirely of boron nitride. Chunks of magnesium were premelted, cast into 11/2-in.-diam. rods, and then cut into lengths varying from a to 1 in. A 5/16-in. hole was drilled through the center of each piece to accommodate the thermocouple well and the individual pieces were then cleaned and rinsed with acetone. The total weight of an alloy was 50 to 70 g in the Mg-Ge system and 40 to 60 g in the Mg-Si system. The pure components were weighed to an accuracy

This Bureau of Mines publication is a literature study of the problem of spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides in underground mines. It summarizes the present-day hazards, process mechanisms, and prevention and control techniques of this growing problem in underground mines. The iron sulfides generally have the greatest tendency to oxidize, particularly pyrrhotite. The presence of moisture and oxygen is essential for the oxidation reaction. Highly fractured sulfides, when found with timber or combustible refuse in slowly circulating air, pose the most serious fire hazard. Quenching with water is effective in quickly dealing with local hot spots, but ventilation at high flaw rates is the most effective and economical means for long-term prevention and control.

RECENT research work has shown that coal can be produced, at reasonable cost, from almost all coal-mining districts containing not more than 3 to 8 per cent. of ash. From coal so produced, an abundant supply of coke, suitable for blast-furnace operation, can be made containing from 12 down to 6 per cent. or less of ash. These statements apply broadly to the Appalachian coal belt, including most of the mining districts in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. The exceptions will generally be found among those coals carrying a prohibitive percentage of sulfur. Any gravimetric heavy fluid method of separation will effect a reduction in the percentage of sulfur, but this reduction may not be sufficient to produce, from coal unfit for metallurgic use, a product that can be so used. When a large part of the sulfur is in the form known as "organic sulfur, "or is present as very .finely disseminated and homogeneously distributed pyrite, possibly it cannot be eliminated from the low-ash coal produced. When the sulfur exists as pyrite in distinct layers, bands, or nodules, or when it is finely disseminated but is irregularly distributed, often a low-ash coal low enough in sulfur to make good metallurgic coke can be produced from relatively impure coals. It has generally been assumed that the quality of coke on which blast furnaces must be operated depends on the geographic location off the furnace, and that the grade of coke on which a blast furnace must operate is that produced from the best coal obtainable by careful mining; or if the coal is prepared by washing, hand picking, or other means by which the foreign impurities are removed, that the grade of coke on which the furnace must operate depends on what has been termed the "inherent ash" of the particular coal.

Fighting the challenge of diminishing ore grades, low base metal prices and a changing pattern of ore supply, Boliden has now taken the second generation of the fully­autogenous grinding concept on stream, Using new design and a highly-developed process control system the benefits of conventional two stage autogenous grinding technology are obtained with a wide range of ore types. The APC grinding system has been developed further. A new design of the Boliden Pebble Extractor together with an advanced control strategy make the performance of the APC concept superior to all other grinding systems with any ore quality. The capacity and simplicity of the autogenous grinding concept is equivalent to the best SAG installations but the operational costs are up to 25 % lower than for SAG or other primary ball or rod mill systems. The concept is as flexible as conventional crushing and rod mill installations but investment and operating costs are of the order of 25 % lower. Also, from the metallurgical point of view, the different types of autogenous grinding system outperform all other comminution systems including SAG. From 1989 to 1991 four fully autogenous grinding sections have been installed at various concentrators at the Boliden company. Old crushing plants and rod and pebble grinding circuits have finally been replaced by highly productive and cost-efficient autogenous grinding equipment. Significant savings in operational costs have already been reported. Power consumption and maintenance costs have been reduced significantly. Productivity expressed as milled tonnes per operator has been improved. Metallurgical results have developed favourably.

Modern high capacity underground mining machinery is a complex of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components which have greatly increased capability over similar components of mining machinery of ten and. even five years ago. Looking into the future I feel certain in stating that there will be changes equally great in the coming five and ten year periods. With this premise in mind, I should like to bring to your attention some of the things that do and will have a continued major impact on the industry, particularly as they relate to the maintenance and operation of these machines of increasing capability. In underground mining today, nearly every individual plays a key role. A machine operator&apos;s importance in his work is comparable with that of the pilot of an airplane, a railroad engineman, a bus driver, a skilled machinist, a bulldozer operator and many others whose assignment is one of doing, by himself, with his hands and his brains all that the specially designed machine has been created to do. These machine operators are supported by a staff of skilled engineers, maintenance personnel, supervision, etc., but objectives are realized only when the operator maintains his schedule. What is being done and what can be done to make it easier for the operator to maintain his schedule which, as with the airplane, is constantly being improved? This question can be answered best, perhaps, by dividing the subject into four general categories - (A) Power Supply. (B) Control and Protective Devices. (C) Hydraulic Component Design. (D) Mechanical Design.

I feel sure that the apparent anomolies between his findings and ours arise as a result of the different experimental methods used. The modem oxygen electrode method he used is sensitive to nano moles of oxygen uptake whereas the method we used was only sensitive to micro moles at best. Furthermore, our experimental method did not permit measurements to be made in the first ten to fifteen minutes of reaction, the very time he is observing. Direct comparison of his data to ours is made difficult because of not knowing the specific area of the samples he used. However, we found that precipitation of PbS using sodium sulphide gave rise to samples of area approximately 30 m2 g - 1. Noticing the rapid decline in oxidation rate over ten minutes, as reported in Table 1, one can conclude that we could not measure the rate after ten minutes using our method. Taking the above area I estimate that at these rates only a small fraction of surface would be oxidised in a period of hours. I can only conclude that at some point a change in oxidation mechanisms occurs giving rise to a much faster rate such as we observed. Finally, I would like to comment on the apparent inertness of the homogeneously precipitated lead sulphide sample 11. This method of preparation we found to give specific areas of 20 to 30 times less than other methods and this would account for the very low oxidation rate.

In the last two decades, equipment used in the coal mining operations has become much more sophisticated. The way that work is organised and performed in the industry has also changed significantly. Changes in equipment specification or procedures inevitably means that the risk associated with that equipment or procedure also changes. In an attempt to address this the Joint Coal Board Occupational Health and Safety Trust (JCB) commissioned the University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre and Mine Site Technologies to perform a feasibility study into the development and deployment of Virtual Reality (VR) based training simulators in the New South Wales coal industry. The main aims of the study were to identify, the key providers of VR Technology, the VR options available to the JCB and the information that would need to be included in any simulator. It was anticipated that a critical assessment of these components would produce a format for a cost effective, state of the art simulator that could be readily accessed by all mines. The expectations of the feasibility study were that VR should offer three-dimensional (3D) simulations that are interactive, high-resolution models of real environments based on best practice Safety Management Plans. It was anticipated that the simulations would allow trainees to experience the consequences of poor decision-making and allow them to learn from their mistakes in a safe and forgiving environment. It was envisaged that such simulators would become an addition to the existing training methods used in the industry.

IN SUBSTANCE, the international aspects of the petroleum industry, as these relate to the United States, are as follows: The domestic production is not keeping pace with the domestic demands; our best engineering talent warns us of the imminence of a decreased production by our oil wells, although more oil is needed; and the only practical source whence this increasing demand can be supplied for some time to come will be the foreign fields. Other nations have given thought to the future and, in recent years, have shown a tendency to adopt strong nationalistic policies regarding their petroleum resources, policies that hinder or prevent the exploitation of these resources by other nationals. In consequence, we find that, facing a probable shortage of the domestic supply, our nationals are excluded from foreign fields; and this in spite of the fact that foreign nationals have been permitted to enter into and exploit, our own oil resources on an equality with American citizens and without hindrance or restrictions. This country: has supplied the larger part of the petroleum consumed by the world and yet, with a failing supply imminent, it finds that those countries that have been drawing upon our resources to supply their needs are showing a tendency to exclude us from their resources. In this way we shall be transferred from a position of dominence to one of dependence; and only by sufferance of those countries that are now seeking financial or political control of petroleum supplies, shall we be able to obtain the oil we will need.

BHP BillitonÆs Yandi channel iron deposit has a large resource of approximately 1.3 billion tonnes. This is a bulk mining operation with a high degree of selectivity not being practical. In contrast the deposit geology is a complex interrelationship of primary channel facies, secondary enrichment of iron and a secondary redistribution of the major contaminants. These variations in geology and alteration can occur over ranges of hundreds of metres down to knife edge contacts. In addition, differences in primary facies and mobility during alteration often result in the iron and contaminants having different patterns of enrichment and depletion. Despite the scale of these operations, if the geological domaining is not optimal, significant errors in the resource estimate of grades and tonnage will occur. Getting the geology right has become a common clichT among mining professionals. However, in many situations, obtaining optimal geological domains for resource modelling is best achieved when there is input from geology, statistics and geostatistics. In this paper, moving window statistics are utilised to see through locally high variability to identify trends that assist in locating difficult to identify geological boundaries. After the creation of geological domains, univariate and multivariate statistics and principal component analysis assist in validating and characterising geological domains. Finally, variography and domain contact analysis are used to analyse the nature of the boundaries between geological domains. At the Yandi channel iron deposit, the inter-relationship between geological and geostatistical analysis has resulted in significant improvements to geological domaining and the treatment of domain boundaries during estimation of iron and contaminates.

WHEN the A.I.M.E. was formed 75 years ago the bituminous coal industry was in its swaddling clothes, although it had been operating for more than a century and coal was being mined in every state now producing it, and its output had long passed that of anthracite. In 18/1, the value of bituminous coal was about seventy per cent of the value of all metals produced and more than one fifth of the value of all products of mines, both metallic and nonmetallic.[1a] While many of the operating mines then shipped by rail, most of the development was along waterways, although the canal era of transportation was nearly at its end. Coal mining is a heavy industry and one of the best measures of its progress is its output throughout the period. Fig. 1 shows this graphically from 1800 to 1945. From 1870 to 1910, the production-which is very nearly the consumption-almost doubled every decade, a most amazing growth. In 1918, in World War I, a peak was reached and a decline began, which ended in 1932. A gradual recovery then started, interrupted in 1938 but culminating in the record output of 1944, when, owing to World War II, a tonnage of 619,576,000 was produced. It is evident that the forces leading to the continuous increase ending in 1918 have spent themselves and that only unusual conditions will require so large a production again. In this study, the effect of chemical interactions of materials used in ion flotation on the removal of Ni(II) ions from low concentration synthetic wastewater was studied. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ethylhexadecyldimethylammonium bromide (EHDABr) as collectors and methyl isobutyl carbonyl (MIBC) and Dowfroth250 as frothers were used. To investigate the effective parameters and interactions of them, 16 experiments including 6 level variables were performed by supporting DX7 software and on the bases of 2-level factorial method. In the first step, the tests were conducted in a Hallimond tube. The result showed that collector of SDS and frother of Dowfroth 250 had appropriate interaction with each other at pH = 3. In the second step, optimal results from the first step were evaluated in a mechanical flotation cell. The removal of Ni(II) ions increased by increasing the time of flotation and they have a direct relation with the water removal. The kinetics study shows that the order and the rate of removal of the reaction do not follow any of the zero-order, first-order and second-order equations. The flotation rate curve on the removal of Ni(II) ions will divide the separation process to two stages, a fast flotation rate at the first stage and a slow flotation rate at the second stage. Ni(II) ions removal was obtained 88% at the best condition.This study showed that the use of ion flotation was a very effective method for Ni(II) ion removal from industrial wastewaters.

About a dozen years ago the art of bessemerizing copper- * matte, brought to these shores from France, was first established at the smelter, in Butte, Montana, of the Parrot Silver and Copper Company, which had bought the process from Mr. Manhks, the inventor. Through the efforts of Mr. J. E. Gaylord, general manager, and Mr. A. J. Schumacher, snperintendent,, assisted by an able staff, the new method rapidly underwent, at the Parrot establishment, an evolution towards higher perfedion, and within a few years its success and its advantages were so marked that all the great works in the west followed in the footsteps of this pioneer. The converter-process has now practically superseded the reverberatory-process in this country. The latter will undoubtedly, in a not very distant future, be relegated to metallurgical history. The writer has availed himself of what was perhaps the last chance to make comparisons of the two methods, working practically on the same material on an extensive scale, the reverberatory process being that of the Baltimore Copper Smelting and Rolling Company,* while the converter-process is that of the Anaconda Copper Company—both using the matte from the latter company&apos;s works in Anaconda, Montana. For the greater portion of the material considered in this paper, the writer is indebted to the two companies. The New England Fold Belt forms the easternmost and youngest section of the Tasman Fold Belt System of eastern Australia. From middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous time it was the site of extensive episodic calc-alkaline magmatism related to W-dipping subduction. The oldest rocks may have formed at least partly in a volcanic island arc, but from the Late Devonian, the fold belt developed as a convergent Pacific-type continental margin. For Late Devonian-Carboniferous time, parallel belts representing continental margin volcanic arc, forearc basin and subduction complex assemblages can be recognised. Major dextral transform faulting may have offset parts of the fold belt in the Late Carboniferous. In addition, some structural blocks which appear to be out of place in the overall palaeogeographic setting are possible exotic or suspect terranes. A great variety of lode deposits ranging in age from middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous is present in the New England Fold Belt. The vast majority of these are related to emplacement of extensive granite plutons and eruption of continental silicic volcanics in Late Permian-Late Triassic time. However, volcanogenic massive sulphides and volcanic hosted epithermal gold-silver deposits in older rock sequences include one major orebody (Mount Morgan) and several important ones (Mount Chalmers, Cracow, Silver Spur, Cangai and Halls Peak). Some problematical deposits are best classified as metamorphic-hydrothermal. These include gold-bearing quartz reefs and stockworks in sedimentary host rocks, the most important of which are at Gympie, and antimony-gold- tungsten mineralisation in the New England area, mainly at Hillgrove.

Long range mine planning involves developing a mining sequence that schedules the extraction of the ore and waste materials within a final pit limit. The objective is to define a sequence that best meets the defined strategic objectives. The main steps in the creation of an open pit mine plan are the final pit limit design, the design and sequencing of the mining phases, equipment selection and operating cost estimation. Flexibility is the key strategic element in developing a mine plan. Planning the extraction sequences and rates for the various mining areas is a challenging and demanding activity. It is often necessary to consider numerous alternative strategies and what if scenarios. The number of alternatives that can be studied with limited manpower and time resources is restricted. In order to investigate strategic aspects of mine planning, a system to generate workable mine plans rapidly is required. The concept of Visual Mine Planning is that the engineer can visualize the current plan, easily change a component of the plan, such as the annual cut-off grade schedule or the production rate within a particular Phase, and immediately see the effect on the mineralogical and cash flows. If the desired result is not achieved, a change is made and the effect is again immediately seen. This paper presents results of research in this area conducted at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The work includes the examination of cut-off grade strategy, sequencing, blending, stockpiling and shovel-truck fleet requirements using simulation.

The place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past Io years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of fmancial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or SO of the earth&apos;s crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum.
