This paper presents a reservoir analyzer study of the performance of the Woodbine formation in the East Texas basin. The study was made possible by the compilation of available information on the configuration. thickness and the pressure drawdown of the formation. The investigation was made of the pressure variations in the basin incident to production from the several Woodbine reservoirs. In addition, the apparent compressibility of Woodbine water was evaluated so that the potential water yield of the formation could be determined. The distribution of permeability of the Woodbine sand and the interference between producing areas were also investigated. In conjunction with this basic study of the Woodbine sand, an acceptable match of the production-pressure relationship in the East Texas Field was established on the analyzer. INTRODUCTION When production is taken from a reservoir contiguous to an aquifer, the resultant pressure gradient causes a water influx into the reservoir. For some years it has been the practice to predict the performance of water drive reservoirs with mathematical equations that relate the water influx into reservoirs to their pressure behavior. A rigorous solution of these equations is quite complex: hence, the conventional method requires the simplifying assumptions that the formation have constant thickness, permeability and poiosity, and that it have a known and regular shape. It is necessary to use performance records of the reservoir in question to determine the equation constants that make the results of the mathematical calculations duplicate the reservoir history. The values of the constants determined in this manner sometimes differ so greatly from theoretical or measured values that the constants appear unreasonable. The equation constants comprise such factors as the thickness, porosity and permeability of the formation, and the viscosity and compressibility of water. Usually the thickness, porosity and viscosity are known within a reasonable degree of certainty. whereas the formation permeability and the water compressibility are known with considerably less certainty. Hence. permeability and compressibility values are arbitrarily selected that will make the mathematical equations duplicate the reservoir behavior. In many reservoir studies the value of the compressibility of water thus selected has exceeded the reported value by a factor of from severalfold to manyfold. Whether this excessive value results from the inadequacy of the mathematical approach to take into account the shape irregularities and the heterogeneities of the aquifer, or is due to some type of formation compaction and decrease of porosity has not been established. Because of the significance of the potential water yield of formations with reference not only to oil reservoirs but to water resources as well, it is very important that a representative value for the effective water compressibility be determined. One of the best known examples of a field for which it has been possible in the past to predict the future reservoir pressure is the East Texas Field. Until about 1943 it was possible by means of mathematical equations to duplicate past pressure behavior and to predict with a high degree of accuracy the reservoir pressure of the field. The chlorine content of the coals in the Illinois Basin ranges from 0.00% to more than 0.60%. The chlorine content of the Herrin (No. 6) Coal has been mapped on a regional scale and, in general, increases with the depth of the coal. The depth-chlorine correlation exists because the coal is in apparent equilibrium with the composition of the ground water associated with it, and the salinity of the ground water generally increases with depth. At least part of the chlorine can be easily removed from the coal in the laboratory. In a natural weathering experiment, chlorine values decreased markedly during an 8-week period. Results to date indicate that none of the coals studied has a sufficiently high chlorine content to make it unusable in high-temperature steam boilers, although special steps may be necessary in the preparation or utilization of some of the highest chlorine coals. Investigations into the occurrence and distribution of chlorine in Illinois coals have been in progress at the Illinois State Geological Survey for over 35 years. Since 1948, chlorine analyses of face channel samples and of drill core samples of coal have been made routinely. The increased interest in chlorine and alkalies in coal in the U.S. followed that in Europe, where power plants during World War II were called upon to produce at higher levels than previously and with less down time for maintenance. Higher steam temperatures were reached, resulting in increases in the amount of fouling of external heating surfaces and in corrosion of boiler tubes when high chlorine coals were used. Early studies of the problem showed that coals with high chlorine content were more likely than those low in chlorine to cause difficulties in installations fired with powdered fuel. Crossleyl reported that the first rule of thumb developed for British coals was that coals considered to be high in chlorine (more than 0.30%) caused the most trouble, those intermediate in chlorine content (0.15% to 0.30%) were less likely to cause difficulties and those low in chlorine (less than 0.15%) generally were not associated with alkali bonded deposits and corrosion. However, this relatively simple picture was not adequate to characterize the difficulties that could be expected during the utilization of a large number of coals and Crossley1 developed another scheme for assessing the chances of superheater corrosion. This scheme took into consideration the observation that coals high in sulfur as well as chlorine are more likely to cause corrosion and fouling than coals low in sulfur and high in chlorine. Crossley also considered the ash content. When two coals had the same chlorine and sulfur contents, the one with the greater amount of ash would be the less likely to cause difficulties. Knowing only the amount of chlorine in a coal obviously will not give all the answers. Indeed, the significance of the chlorine content has been much discussed and it has been suggested that perhaps the total alkalies are a better indicator of possible troubles. THE formation of intermediate phases in the solid state reaction of titanium with silicon, germanium. and tin (of subgroup 4B in the periodic table) was the subject of a recent paper.' Further investigation of the system Ti-Sn revealed the presence of a new compound on the titanium-rich side of this phase diagram. Metallographic evidence indicated that this new phase was situated very close to 75 atomic pct Ti. The present work is concerned with the crystal structure of the intermediate phase Ti3Sn. Iodide-process titanium metal, furnished by the New Jersey Zinc Co., was used in this investigation. The metallic tin was received in powder form from Charles Hardy Inc., New York; its purity was 99.80 pct. The titanium rod was machined into small cups 1 cm in diam and about 1.5 cm in height. The tin powder was compacted, melted, and then placed in the titanium cups and alloyed by electric arc melting in a helium atmosphere. The alloys, weighing approximately 8 g, were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and homogenized at 1030°C for 5 days. This isothermal heat treatment was terminated by a water quench from the soaking temperature. Filings of the alloyed pellets were sealed in evacuated quartz bulbs and quenched from 1030°C into liquid argon. A 14.32 cm Debye Scherrer X-ray camera was used for the powder diffraction study. The copper radiation was filtered. X-ray diffraction data for the compound Ti3Sn are given in Table I. The data were indexed on the basis of a hexagonal lattice. Good agreement between observed and calculated values of the square of the reciprocal interplanar spacings was obtained with the following expression: (1/d)2 = 0.03810 (h2 + hk + k2) + 0.04410 (l2) Unit cell parameters were calculated by the method of least squares from the reflections (20.3), (22.2), (40.1), and (42.1); ao = 5.916 & 0.004A, co = 4.764 ± 0.004A, and co/ao = 0.805. The relatively small size of the unit cell allowed the unambiguous indexing of most of the reflections from planes of large spacing. An inspection of the assigned indices (Table I) reveals the absence of (hk.l) reflections when 1 2n. A systematic absence of this type leads to the space group C 6/mmc or one of its subgroups. Assuming, for a first approximation, a linear increase in the density of titanium with the addition of tin, it follows that there are two stoichiometric molecules of Ti3Sn per unit cell. The density calculated from X-ray measurements is 5.194 g cm-'. At this point it became clear that Ti3Sn might be isomorphous with Mg3Cd. The 6 Ti and 2 Sn atoms were placed in the following positions of space group D4 6h, C 6/mmc: 6Tiin (h): X 2X 1/4; 22;; 1/4;Xx 1/4;x2x3/4; 2x x 3/4; x x 4; with x = 516 2 Sn in (c): 1/3 2/3 1/4; 2/3 1/3 3/4.

The Kamyr countercurrent tower leach process consists of a true countercurrent leach ?with a flocculated ore and fibre mixture entering the top of the tower and a cyanide solution or alternative lixiviant as well as a barren wash solution entering the bottom of the tower. It offers the possibility of including the entire leaching, solid-liquid separation and clarification processes into one unit or tower as opposed to the multiple leach tanks, filtration and clarification sections required in a conventional leach and precipitation plant. The tower process has been demonstrated in the laboratory and found to be effective for leaching gold, silver and other amenable ores. Based on laboratory results, Gencor and Kamyr have jointly constructed a 200 ton per day pilot plant in order to prove the process on a larger semi-production plant scale.

In today's economic environment, Canadian mines can ill afford to neglect their ventilation systems as they can consume 30- 40% of the electricity used in underground mines. In addition, Canadian mines can incur significant heating costs. For mines to be their most cost efficient they must embrace existing and emerging technology to optimize the use of their air; namely, maximizing its work in diluting and removing pollutants, limiting leakage, and avoiding the unnecessary consumption of costly fan pressure all the while ensuring the health of their workforce. Furthermore, in Canadian mines which are heavily dieselized there is great interest within the industry to convert from a rigid quantitative approach to ventilation, based upon engine size, towards a more flexible qualitative approach that provides credit for Clean engine technology" and permits ventilation supply to be driven and based upon pollutant demands. In the future, there is even the possibility that ventilation will only be required to supply oxygen to diesel equipment as the underground hands-on workforce is replaced by surface workers and tele-operation. Such changes will allow mine operators to minimize their electrical usage and operating costs, for in its simplest form the cost of running a fan is proportional to the quantity3; therefore, reducing current ventilation demands or limiting increases brought on by more stringent legislation, can produce very significant cost savings. CANMET, through ventilation surveys and use of its modern 3D-CANVENT ventilation simulator, have been demonstrating to the mining industry how ventilation can be optimally delivered at reduced costs. El-Equip with their leaky-feeder communications and MultiVENT monitoring and control system have facilitated mines to control fans and hence costs, and also monitor such ventilation parameters as pollutant concentrations. These two parties are now combining their efforts to develop an integrated air management system which will be demonstrated at CANMET's Experimental Mine Val D'Or, Quebec. With such an air management system, the ventilation engineer will have: 1) a simple to use simulator to design and test ventilation scenarios; 2) remote controls of fans, doors and regulators to implement changes; and 3) real-time monitoring of airflow, pollutant concentrations, and both vehicle identity and location to show whether changes are necessary. It is only when all three are available, that a mine's ventilation system can be operated at minimum cost.

DURING the years 1875 to 1879 I had charge of the Rockwood furnaces and mines, situated forty miles from the nearest railway communication at that time, and one hundred miles north of Chap tanooga, Tenn., by the Tennessee River. The small furnace with old-fashioned stoves, then in blast, was built under great difficulties by General Wilder. The early conditions were somewhat as follows: The ore was fossil ore of the Clinton group ; very fine and generally wet, without other admixture. The coke had a large amount of ash, and the fur" nace appeared to be badly scaffolded at times. On many days only a few tons of iron could be obtained. The founder generally id creased the revolutions of the engine when signs of chilling appeared,. The cinder at such times was black, very scoriatious, often closely resembling mill cinder. When the pressure was increased (the joints being the old-fashioned rust joints), leaks in the blast-pipe occurred It was noted that when the blast was stopped, and the leak bolt imperfectly remedied, the furnace improved a little. This set me thinking on the right track; and I took the responsibility of be coming my own founder for a time. A scaffolded condition had existed, and the situation was a trying one. Strange to say the negroes proved excellent furnace-men. Conceiving the hearth of the furnace to be similar to the grate area of a steam-boiler, capable of disposing of but so much fuel per hour, and requiring only a corresponding amount of air, it follows that an excess of air will burn the fuel not yet arrived at the hearth!, and raise the melting-point far above the tuyeres. This might pro duce scaffolding or at any rate choke the boshes, and leave less fuel to be consumed in the hearth. Thus for the time being less ail;. would be needed, as the continued burning of fuel in and above the boshes, would only aggravate the trouble. This condition of affairs accounted for the black cinder; the heat above having melted ore not yet perfectly reduced. THE object of development work in the field of gasification is to find a process by which all' fuels, regardless of their individual properties, can be gasified economically. This paper describes the development of the Winkler process. The economy of the gasification process depends not only on the degree of the gasification effect but also, to a decisive extent, on the costs of fuel, production, and installations. Fig 1 shows the relation between fuel costs and gasification efficiency for various types of fuels. Since the fuel cost in the gasification of coke amounts to two thirds of the price of gas, and the thermal unit in brown coal costs only one third of what it costs in coke, it is easily seen how profitably cheap fuels can be gasified, especially if these fuels require minimum preparation and gasification is done in the vicinity of the mines. These possibilities were a great advantage of the Winkler generators, which were installed 20 years ago in the central German brown-coal fields and, at that time, were without rival for the gasification of finely divided fuels. In the Winkler generator (Fig 2), crushed and ground solid fuels were, for the first time, successfully gasified with oxygen and steam on an industrial scale. Unlike the usual processes formerly employed on an industrial scale, this gasification, which proceeds continuously in the glowing, seething fuel bed, makes only extremely low demands on the fuel. The fuel no longer has to be in lumps and abrasion-resistant, but must be capable of reaction and must be fed into the generator in a grain size of 0 to 8 mm. Brown coal or bituminous coal, or their low-temperature cokes, can be gasified in the Winkler generator. Large plants using fuels are operating on an industrial scale in Europe and in Japan. Table 1 shows the results obtained by gasifying these, fuels in Winkler generators. The thermal efficiency of gasification, which is the relation between the calorific value obtained in the gas produced and that of the fuel consumed, gives no indication of the quantity of steam generated in gasification. There is an ever-increasing demand for furnaces with controlled atmosphere, due to the large quantities of steel being used in the automotive industry, such as the high-chromium stainless irons, the 18 Cr, 8 Ni stainless iron and low-carbon steel sheets. The difficulties involved in the annealing of such materials, if they are to be kept absolutely free from oxidation, are many. It is possible to bright-anneal these steels in small laboratory hydrogen furnaces, using specially purified hydrogen and taking some additional precautions. In the first place, the insulation, usually of alumina or magnesia, holds small amounts of water vapor, which it is almost impossible to remove completely. Secondly, there is always condensataion of water vapor in the cooling chambers of such furnaces, and with the continuous circulation of the hydrogen gas in the furnace, the water vapor is carried from the cooling chamber back into the heating chamber. This water vapor oxidizes the charge. Lastly, the supply of moisture is made sure by the diffusion of small amounts of air from the atmosphere into the furnace against the pressure of the hydrogen. The oxygen combines with the hydrogen and forms more water. Under such conditions there is little gained by using specially purified gas, because it becomes contaminated after reaching the furnace. Low-carbon Steel If a sheet of low-carbon steel is annealed in such a furnace at 750" C. and allowed to cool with the furnace, an adequate flow of purified hydrogen being maintained all of the time, the steel will come out with a very thin coating of blue oxide. If a similar sheet is annealed at the same temperature and quickly pushed into the cooling chamber, it will come out nearly bright, or perhaps with only the edges slightly discolored. It is difficult to get a piece of steel through a furnace of this type with an absolutely bright surface. This is due to the fact that there are always traces of oxygen or water vapor in the furnace. When the steel is allowed to cool with the furnace, it reaches a critical temperature where the affinity of iron for oxygen is greater than that of hydrogen for oxygen, and the steel comes out discolored. Remote sensing technologies have been applied to numerous fields and already benefited those in improving efficiency and recognition accuracy. Change of streamflow can be devastating to residents living along riversides. Still it is difficult to detect such deathly change in large area scale by traditional field surveys. The research aims at provision of detecting streamflow change using a mathematic method based on remote sensing technologies. The scope is on remote sensing stream images taken during the invasion by Typhoon Morakot, bringing one of the major catastrophes to Taiwan. An algorithm was adopted to deal with streamflow recognition on RGB images. The algorithm is capable of yielding change measured by meters and illustrates how main streams shift. An practical example for the Baolai area surrounded by Laonong stream shows that the streamflow moved 88 meters (36 pixels) toward the downtown area during the invasion by Typhoon Morakot. In addition, the results highlight all dangerous zones (scouring zones) for residents to prevent further potential damage.

COREX process has obvious advantages in environment protection but still has some disadvantages, for example, it has a higher sulfur content of hot metal than blast furnace. In this paper, the thermodynamics and dynamics of desulfurization have been investigated to obtain the main operation parameters related to the mass fraction of sulfur in the hot metal. In addition, statistical analyses have been carried out to study the relationship between operating parameters and sulfur content of COREX hot metal based on actual plant data. It has been found that the mass fraction of sulfur in hot metal is significantly influenced by the C content in hot metal, MgO/Al2O3 in slag, the concentration of MgO in slag, the temperature of hot metal and binary basicity (R2).A linear model has been developed and subsequently used for reducing the mass fraction of sulfur in hot metal, improve the quality of hot metal and contribute to low carbon ironmaking.

Dry deep screening is an important method of classifying moist fine mineral. The rigid-flexible coupled elastic screening technology can simultaneously solve the problem of traditional screen surface plugging and the low service life of a screen surface in the process of deep screening. In this paper, two kinds of rigid-flexible coupled elastic screen surfaces were introduced. The structural characteristics of a screen surface were studied. The mechanism of a rigid flexible coupled elastic screen surface to overcome hole blockage was revealed. Finally, 3 mm and 6 mm screening experiments were carried out. When the external moisture content was below 12.79% for the 6 mm dry screening experiment of elastic rod screen surface, the screening efficiency was above 81%. When the external moisture content was below 11.31% for the 3 mm dry screening experiment of elastic screen surface based on ball hitting, the screening efficiency was above 83%. The incineration of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) is an attractive process for reducing the volume of the wastes and recovering their energetic value, which, however, requires to be strictly controlled in order to limit its impact on the environment. In this context, we have undertaken the mathematical modeling of the different sections of a typical incineration plant. The combustion of the waste bed, usually carried out on a moving grate, is at the core of the process. This paper presents the 2-dimensional, steady-state model that we have developed for simulating the MSW combustion. The model describes gas flow through the porous waste particle bed, the gas-solid reactions, conductive and radiative heat transfers, drying of the feed, its pyrolysis and the emission of volatile species, combustion of the pyrolysis gases, the formation of char and its gasification by water vapor and carbon dioxide, and the consequent reduction of the bed volume. Pyrolysis kinetics distinguish between cellulosic and non-cellulosic materials and are experimentally derived from our laboratory measurements. The calculated results give a deep insight into the various involved phenomena, an example being the complete consumption of oxygen in a large zone of the bed and the related appearance of a char gasification zone. The influence of various operating parameters, like the temperature and flow rate of primary air, is presented and explained. Finally, the effect of stirring the waste bed on the moving grate is also analyzed.

Observations of dislocations in zinc using Berg-Barrett X-ray micrography confirm the validity of a dislocation etch for (1010) surfaces. A technique for measurement of the depth in which dislocations can be imaged in X-ray micrographs is given. This depth on (0001) surfaces of zinc was found to be 2.5 µ using a (1013) reflection and CoKa radiation. BUCHANAN and Reed-Hill (B & RH) have recently questioned the ability of a dislocation etch to reveal all of the basal dislocations which intersect (1010) surfaces in annealed zinc crystals.' This etch was developed by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland who conducted a number of different experiments to check its ability to reveal dislocations.2,3 B & RH prepared (0001) foil specimens for transmission electron microscopy from annealed crystals and observed dislocation densities of about l08 cm per cu cm in the foils, while the etch indicated densities of the order of l04 cm per cu cm in their annealed crystals. As this etch has been used in a number of studies of dislocations in zinc, it is of considerable importance to reassess its validity in the light of the B & RH results. The X-ray work reported here was undertaken to check the ability of the etch to reveal dislocation intersections on (1070) surfaces of zinc. The X-ray technique was chosen for this check because it could be applied to the as-grown crystals with a relatively small amount of specimen preparation. We believe that the possibility of accidental deformation in preparation of the bulk specimens is considerably less than that for thin foil specimens suitable for transmission electron microscopy. Unfortunately, basal dislocations are not visible on Berg-Barrett topo-graphs of (1010) surfaces, which are the surfaces on which the etch is most effective. Therefore, a one-to-one correspondence between the etch and X-ray observations could not be made. Basal dislocations near (0001) surfaces have been observed by Schultz and Armstrong4 using the Berg-Barrett technique, but they did not report the as-grown dislocation density observed in their crystals. We have applied the X-ray technique in this study to surfaces oriented from 1 to 2 deg of the (0001) to determine the basal dislocation density, and have compared this density with that observed using the etch on a (1070) plane of the same crystal. The X-ray observations permit determination of the depth in which basal dislocations can be observed under the diffracting conditions used. SPECIMEN PREPARATION High purity zinc crystals are very soft, so a good deal of care must be exercised in the preparation of observation surfaces. As-grown crystals approximately 2.5 cm in diam and 20 cm long were acid cut into 1.25 cm cubes. A thin slab was cleaved from an (0001) surface to produce an accurately oriented reference surface on the specimen. Some of the cubes were examined in the as-machined condition while some were annealed in argon at 410°C for 2 hr. Heating and cooling rates were less than 2°C per min. Some of the specimens were scratched on a (0001) surface with a razor blade to produce fresh dislocations. Approximately 2 mm of material was acid lapped from one face of a cube to produce a surface oriented between 1 and 2 deg from the basal plane and parallel to the [1210] direction. A (1070) surface was also acid lapped. The lap used a 1 to 3 pct solution of HN03 in water to saturate a soft cloth which was backed by a stainless steel plate. The cloth was moved over the crystal surface at a rate of 20 cm per sec while a normal force of about 4 g was maintained between the cloth and the specimen. As-lapped surfaces were examined as were surfaces which were chemically and electrolytically polished after lapping. The small angle between a lapped surface and the (0001) plane was measured to 0.1 deg using a Unitron microgoniometer microscope (the cleaved surface was used as a reference in this measurement). The microscope was modified so that the intensity of reflected light could be continuously monitored on a meter. This modification produced nearly a ten-fold increase in the reproduceability of orientation readings. OBSERVATIONS The Unitron Microgoniometer observations indicated that the lapped surfaces had a terraced structure with the terraces quite rounded and spaced about 0.1 mm in the [1010] direction. The maximum change in slope between terraces was 0.25 deg, indicating a terrace height of about 0.1 µ. A Unitron measurement of the average angle between (0001) and a lapped surface was checked by micrometer measurement of the specimen and found to agree within 0.1 deg. The Berg-Barrett micrographs using (1013) reflections and CoKa radiation5 revealed subboundaries, short dislocation segments, spirals, and loops near the surfaces which were oriented from 1 to 2 deg of the (0001). Micrographs of surfaces prepared by lapping appeared very similar to those of the chemically and electrolytically polished surfaces. The loops and spirals were not extinct in (1013) or (0002) reflections, indicating that they have a nonbasal Burgers vector. Extinctions of the short, straight dislocations indicated that they belonged to an (0001)(1210) system. Its major drawback lies in the fact that the matrix in this case is a pure constituent (or a terminal solid solution of fixed concentration) and the ratio of fiber to matrix volume is fixed. Only very few, if any, pure metal matrices possess technically useful properties, and the necessity for alloying is the inevitable consequence of this fact. Nevertheless, structures similar to binary eutectic ones can be obtained in higher-order systems by pseudoeutectic reactions of a type where crystallites and a solid-solution matrix are simultaneously precipitated from a liquid.1"3 Trials to solidify such alloys directionally—the matrix consisting of a solid solution of chromium, nickel, and silicon and the reinforcing phase being Cr3C2— will be reported elsewhere.4 This note describes constitutional studies carried out primarily to determine -the position of the pseudoeutectic and further to insure that no undesirable reactions between the reinforcing phase and components of the matrix occur in the solid state at elevated temperatures. In the investigation it was specifically desired to reinforce a matrix which is as close as possible to the 80/20 Nichrome composition with Cr3C2 to insure good oxidation resistance and improve the strength at high temperatures. No konstitutional information on the quaternary C-Cr-Ni-Si svstem in the range of interest was found in the literature. Nevertheless, the two most important ternaries c-cr-Ni5 and have been completely investigated. On C-Cr-Si some investigations have been conducted,7"9 and C-Ni-Si was studied with a few alloys in the course of the present investination 9 Eight alloys were prepared to investigate the changes in the constitution of the ternary C-Cr3Ce-yNi eutectic5 with silicon contents up to 10 wt pct. Five alloys were made with varying chromium and carbon contents around compositions containing -60 to 70 wt pct Ni and 5 to 6 wt pct Si. The latter alloys were designed to locate the y(Ni-Cr-Si-C)-Cr3C2 pseudoeutectic reaction and to determine the maximum chromium content in solid solution compatible with a two-phase equilibrium between y and Cr3C2 only. The alloys were prepared from electrolyte nickel, semiconductor-grade silicon, high-purity chromium (99.999 pct pellets), and semiconductor-grade graphite. They were melted inductively in high-purity alumina crucibles under flowing argon. Twenty-gram charges were prepared and investigated by optical microscopy (including hot-stage investigations), X-ray powder methods, and electronmicroprobe analysis. The alloys were studied in the as-cast condition and also after a homogenization annealing treatment of 48 days at 900°C in evacuated quartz ampoules. The structures of all alloys based on the ternary eutectic plus silicon in the as-cast state consisted generally of an inhomogeneous solid solution and at least two other phases. Annealing of the alloys showed that the solid solution was homogenized but that an incomplete solid-state reaction had taken place in all alloys with silicon contents over 5 wt pct. This reaction is clearly visible in Fig. 1 around the large Cr3C2 crystals (gray areas). Below this concentration, the alloys consisted of a homogeneous matrix and precipitates of Cr3C2 plus graphite, Fig. 2. The Cr3C2 was entirely unreacted here. At the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1924. I endeavoured to present the position held by the mineral industries in the commercial life of this country. The facts and figures were presented at that time in a detached way. Since then, however, I have made some attempt to analyze them in order to determine the causes for that position and to draw some conclusions as to the future of the mining industry. As everyone knows, our trade figures are very often used in political discussion, especially in discussion of tariff policy. It would be entirely out of order for me to say anything touching the tariff issue and I want to have it clearly understood that, in my opinion, the material I am about to present contains not a single statement or conclusion which anyone would be warranted in using as an argument for either a lower or a higher tariff or for tariff changes of any kind. As a starting point, let me re-state, very sketchily, Canada's general situation in external trade. In the last calendar year, 1924, we sold Canadian merchandise of all kinds to other countries to the value of $1,045,000,000 in round figures. Our purchases abroad reached about $893,000,000. Thus our sales exceeded our purchases by roughly $152,000,000. In other words, we had what is known as a 'favourable balance of trade' - one of the biggest favourable balances we have ever had in our history. The proceeds of our sales of Canadian products enabled us to meet the bills for all our purchases of foreign commodities and, in addition, placed a large surplus to our credit with which to offset our interest charges and other obligations abroad.

This paper presents the consequences of modernization and expansion of process plant by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Carbon-in-pulp technology at the Hutti Gold Mine. From the inception of the process plant, it has undergone many changes for the improvement. In the beginning, only gravity recovery of gold was carried out by using Pebble Mills and Strake Tables. Later amalgamation, Cyanidation and Zinc precipitation and finally Carbon-in-pulp gold recovery system was implemented. Grinding plant was modernized by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Knelson concentrator for free gold recovery as a result, the production rate, rate of recovery, reduced man power, Modernization and expansion of process plant has also yielded in safe and smooth running of the plant. Folklore suggests that oxidation is detrimental to sulfide mineral flotation, and in many instances is the reason given for values reporting in the tailing. However, while a considerable body of work examining galena oxidation is available in the literature there are very few studies that investigate the consequences of galena oxidation on its subsequent flotation in base metal sulfide ores. This work clearly demonstrates that pyrite forms a galvanic couple with galena, due to the large difference in their rest potentials, and results in accelerated oxidation of galena, particularly as the pyrite content of the ore is increased. The most obvious effect of the galvanic oxidation of galena by pyrite is the release into the system of galena oxidation products, providing an ample supply of lead ions available to activate gangue minerals, most notably of which in lead/zinc ores is sphalerite. The inadvertent activation of sphalerite by lead ions inevitably leads to the recovery of liberated sphalerite into the lead concentrate, and as a consequence a reduction in the lead concentrate grade. That is, a loss of selectivity for galena against sphalerite. If galena oxidation is excessive not only is there a considerable loss in lead concentrate grade, but also a marked decreased in lead recovery as the flotation rates of the gangue minerals increase, until they rival that of galena.

Perhaps no other mineral commodities in this volume have as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as aggregates, fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, reactive agents in sulfur-oxide removal, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Holocene. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1989 about 798 Mt were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses. The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.
