This Bureau of Mines report reviews and assesses the technology for preparing electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals from molten alkali metal cyanide baths. Methods are described for the preparation and purification of the cyanide electrolyte. Vacuum drying, fusion, and purity of the cyanide salts are discussed. Use of a sodium borosilicate test tube as a sodium-ion-conducting membrane for the addition of the desired platinum-group metal is described. The optimum plating parameters of potential and current density for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ir coatings that result in the best deposits are given. A method for producing platinum-rhodium alloy coatings of predetermined composition is also described. The importance of careful substrate surface preparation is illustrated. While problems still remain with respect to coating porosity, careful application of the methods described permits the preparation of adherent, coherent electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals.

"This paper describes the history of LDV measurements employed in research involving gas-solid flows. Much of the discussion deals with measurement techniques employed to obtain separate and simultaneous solid and gas phase velocities. Also, LDV based measurement techniques that arc used to obtain particle size and concentration information in conjunction with the velocity measurements arc presented.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous examples of industrial processes in which the motion of a solid or droplet dispersed phase in a suspending gas phase is critically important. The applications range from spray droplets injected into combustion chambers to the understanding of the time release mechanisms of particles generated by dissolving pharmaceutical tablets. In many of these processes, the heat, mass, and/or momentum transfer between the dispersed phase and the suspending fluid arc the items of interest. In the past, much of the phenomena were characterized by empirical models derived from flow averaged measurements. Gradual developments in laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), have provided researchers with an unobtrusive measurement technique capable of obtaining the particle size velocity and concentration with good spatial resolution.In the two decades that LDV instrumentation has been available, most of the uses have concentrated on single phase fluid flow measurements. The light scattered from seed particles small enough to follow complex fluid motions, including turbulence, is converted into velocity information. While the utility of this instrument in single phase flows has been demonstrated beyond question, the use of LDV in gas-solid multiphase flows has had a more gradual development. The measurements ·of interest in these flow regimes are usually the velocity of the suspending fluid as well as that of the dispersed particulate phase. Early investigators were quick to see the potential of this instrument for measurements in gas-solid flows. The interest soon expanded to the development of instruments that could also simultaneously measure particle size and concentration within a two-phase flow field.This paper tracks the historical development of LDV technology as applied to gas-solid flows. The techniques to measure particle velocity, size, and concentration arc treated in separate sections although much of the development occurred simultaneously. Finally, some unique applications conducted at West Virginia University and other locations will be discussed in the application section."

"Pillar design for underground mining is typically done using empirical formulae or numerical modelling. Practical experience and recent literature, nevertheless, illustrate the shortcomings of these design approaches. Ongoing monitoring of pillars is therefore recommended to minimize the risk associated with these designs.In a mine where a large number of pillars are cut, different pillar strengths can be expected owing to variations in rock mass strength from area to area. This problem is compounded by the fact that in mining environments the pillars are not always cut according to the prescribed dimensions. Although the original design using either empirical methods or modelling may predict stable pillars, unstable pillars will be encountered in reality. Very conservative designs with large factors of safety may circumvent this problem, but this approach is uneconomical.A possible solution to localized stability problems may be to enhance the strength of a few unstable pillars. It may even be hypothesized that reinforcing a few critical pillars may prevent ‘pillar runs’ on a much larger scale. Rockbolting, strapping of pillars, and pillar shotcreting have occasionally been used in the past as possible solutions. It appears that these have not been successful in all cases and large collapses have occurred in spite of the pillar remedial work.The authors investigated the strapping of pillars by conducting laboratory tests on cabled rock specimens. The results were qualitatively compared to actual attempts of pillar reinforcement available in the literature, as well as additional observations in an old haematite roomand- pillar mine in Spain. Based on these results, the value of steel cabling and mesh wrapped around pillars to improve stability is demonstrated. Some cases where this approach will not be successful are also discussed."

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil, this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states. Information given on each heavy-oil deposit includes the following items: Field and formation, location, average or range of depth, average API gravity of oil, aver- age thickness of formation, areal extent of field, total productive wells drilled in field, discovery date of field, field status in 1963, cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1964, and all known types of secondary-recovery operations initiated (active and terminated) in the reservoirs. The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map, and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text. As of Jan. 1, 1964, 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place. It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history, such as the one in Missouri, were included, the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels. To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil, industry is developing technology in several types of thermal-recovery methods. Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study fur thermal-recovery techniques are: Lithology, depth, viscosity of reservoir fluids, gravity of oil, reservoir thickness, oil in place, and permeability and porosity.

Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

Adaptive processing is often related to the mineral composition of the mining block currently processed. The portions of waste, ore and secondary product minerals considered are always positive and typically sum to 100% (i.e. a composition). A typical solution to predict block averages of spatially dependent quantities would be block kriging. However, kriging is based on spatial correlations and it has been repeatedly shown that correlations of compositional data are spurious and blurred by the constant sum constraint. Aitchison (1982) proposed a general solution for compositional problems, based on transforming the compositional data to a set of logarithms of ratios of components, and analysing the transformed scores. The transform is chosen to be invertible to ensure that no information is lost in the process. This methodology avoids spurious correlation problems and ensures coherence between results obtained with different subcompositions. Pawlowsky-Glahn and Olea (2004) adapted the approach for point-support geostatistics, allowing the prediction of point compositions from spatially neighbouring data, without the artefacts induced by standard multivariate cokriging. Unfortunately upscaling the results of this approach with block cokriging is not straightforward, because of the nonlinearity of logratio transforms. Furthermore, we have to consider those nonlinearities created by the dependence on the block composition of extraction efficiency and processing costs of the possible processing choices. This paper proposes a solution for predicting the conditional expectations of the benefit of processing the block with each processing choice using geostatistical simulations of the local values of the composition and the resulting block integrals. The computation for a large number of blocks can be done efficiently using Cholesky decomposition. The approach also allows the calculation of prediction errors for expected compositions and expected benefit at almost no additional computational cost. Such compositional approach is necessary, for example when processing choices depend on proportions of certain minerals after other components have been removed; or if processing alters the composition in a multiplicative way, by partially removing a portion of some components.

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. FABRICATORS of copper and copper alloys have contended with the problems of reconversion during the past year in endeavoring to return to the full-scale production that is demanded of them. The problems have not been easy, for the industry, like so many others, has had to deal with strikes of long duration, and material shortages, particularly in the raw materials, copper, zinc, lead, and tin. Despite all these obstacles, it was possible to gear production to new peacetime records during the latter part of the year. This was made possible not only by the use of multiple shifts of personnel, but also by the improved production equipment, the development of which had been stimulated by wartime necessity. The work of installing new and better equipment is still continuing, and virtually every company is engaged in improving or planning to improve its processes.

Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. The Mining Engineering Handbook is written primarily for persons interested in the economic extraction of minerals. Not everyone referring to this book will be knowledgeable about mining and, therefore, this section is intended to explain to interested persons the scope of mining as well as fulfilling the title of "Mining's Place and Contribution" among the industries of society. 1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS AND ORE In the year 1971, the number of known elements amounted to 104. Fifteen of these have been made only in the laboratory, others may have persisted from the primitive atmosphere, but, by and large, elements originated from magmas or igneous rocks of the outer rocky shell of the earth. Only eight elements constitute 98% by weight of the earth's crust. These are oxygen, 47%; silicon. 28%; aluminum, 8%; iron, 5%; and sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium, less than 4% each. These common elements and the other less common ones are the building blocks of minerals, of which there are over 2,000 varieties. According to Webster: "A mineral is an inorganic substance occul.ring natura!ly in the earth and having a consistent and distinctive set of physical properties and a composition that can be expressed by a chemical formula. The term is sometimes applied to organic substances, such as coal." Thus, minerals are precise combinations of elements. Rocks, as distinct from minerals, are composed of assemblages of minerals. When minerals are found in sufficient concentration to warrant extraction by mining, the mineralized area is considered an ore deposit. The definition of ore is mineral that can be extracted from the ground at a profit. The economic connotation is implicit in the word ore. Since most of the useful elements compose such a small percentage of the earth's crust, the occurrence of ore deposits as we know them would not have transpired had not geologic processes concentrated the elements (see Sec. 4). 1.2-DEFINITIONS OF MINING TERMS Extensive coverage of the many descriptive terms used in mining may be found in a good mining glossary, such as is available from the Superintendent of Documents (see Sec. 35), but for convenience a number of the more common definitions are given here. Mining may be defined, as by A. B. Cummins, as the act, process or work of extracting minerals or coal from their natural environment and transporting them to the point of processing or use. The iron ore question in this country has been widely discussed for many years, but only recently has its real significance becoming generally understood. The exhaustion of the old Helen mine, in 1918, marked the last phase of hematite production in Ontario, and with the closing of the Magpie mine in 1921 , Canada ceased to be a producer of iron ore. For the past three years every ton of ore used in Canadian blast furnaces has been imported. In a recent issue of the Engineering and Mining Journal-Press, Arthur B. Pearsons, Assistant Editor, makes the following statement : Iron dominates the world. Some contend that coal is more vital. be-cause heat is needed to make iron and steel. But there are other sources of energy, more convenient and less costly and it is only a question of time when progress in hydro-electric development will have reached the point where coal will be but an incidental source of power and heat. Even more direct means than the generation of electricity by hydro-power eventu-ally will be developed by making available the latent energy of the sun. But iron; Science gives not the vaguest suggestion that anything will dis-place iron and steel as the most essential material tool of modem civiliza-tion. ? Hardness, tenacity, malleability-it possesses all these in unique de-gree. These are some of the qualities that make steel and iron indispensable in modern industry. The domestic consumption per inhabitant of the United States has climbed uniformly from 0.18 tons in 1900, to 0.36 tons in 1922. New kinds of machines and new types of structures are being devised every year; and steel or iron is the basis of most of them." It is unlikely that the Ontario Government were actuated by this motive when they appointed the Iron Ore Committee to investigate and report on the iron ore situation, nevertheless, these facts must have influenced them in some degree.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974 was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (D.E.I.) on research and development, laboratory; field and other engineering studies for the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included a discussion on the peculiarity of retorted shale materials to be investigated and a discussion of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I - Program Development II - Exploratory Laboratory tests on old U.S.B.M., retored shale III - Laboratory tests on Pilot Plant retorted shale IV - Laboratory tests on retorted shale from Semi-Works Plant, and field and test plots and ponds. For sources with an iron-to-vanadium ratio of far above 1, it is proposed to leach in acid and to oxidize under autoclave conditions. During this oxidation process, it is experimentally shown that divalent iron contained in this solution will be oxidized to trivalent iron, whereas free acid contained will be consumed by this reaction. In case no acid is present or already fully consumed, a solid consisting of ferric compounds and an iron-vanadium-co-precipitate will form that can be filtered from the solution. If choosing the right reaction conditions, this filter cake has an iron-to-vanadium ratio of close to 1, whereas the liquid remainder is almost vanadium free. This precipitate, identified as FeVO4, 1.1 H2O, can be processed by conventional technologies such as caustic leaching, or probably salt roasting or reduction with aluminum, yielding common marketable products.

This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socioeconomic contexts. The results show that regional newspapers in Finland, Germany and Spain report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive toward mining activities. Common themes include mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. Contrary to some expectations, the regional-level debate was not dominated by a long-lasting confrontation between the mining industry and its adversaries spearheaded by environmental nongovernmental organizations.

LKAB owns and operates two of the largest underground mines in the world in Northern Sweden. In Malmberget, with a production capacity of about 30,000 t/day of iron ore, the current main 815 m haulage level is rapidly approaching the end of Its life and plans are being made for its replacement on the 1000 m level. Due to the separation of the orebodies, trucks have been chosen for transporting the ore from the orepasses to the crushers. The trucks currently in use have a capacity of 120 tons. To increase the efficiency of the loaded haul, the new main level will have a favorable slope from the drawpoint locations to the crushers. From the new level the crushed ore will be transported by conveyor to the 815 m level for hoisting to the surface. The paper discusses the planned mining and transportation system.

Prior work at the Bureau of Mines resulted in the successful development of a bench-scale, combination electrorefining-electrowinning method for recycling the lead from scrap batteries using waste fluosilicic acid (H2SiF6) as electrolyte. This paper describes larger scale experiments. Anodes cast from scrap battery lead were electrorefined in a 20-L multielectrode cell for 3 to 7 days. The anodes, containing 2 to 2.5 pct antimony, were ideal for obtaining firm and adherent slime blankets. Cathode deposits, assaying 99.99 pct Pb, were obtained, with current efficiencies near 99 pct. Sludge leaching was done in 100-L tanks followed by filtering in 61 cm square vacuum pan filtersu Lead of greater than 99.99-pct purity was recovered from the filtrate by electrowinning in a 20-L multielectrode cell using insoluble Pb02-Ti (lead dioxide-coated titanium) anodes and pure lead cathodes. The fluo-silicic acid electrolyte depleted in lead was repeatedly recycled to leach more sludge, and there was no problem with impurity buildup. The amount of Pb02 formed on the anodes during electrowinning was less than 1 pct of the total lead deposited on the cathodes, as long as the phosphorus concentration in the electrolyte was greater than 1.3 giL. Emissions of lead in air were less than 10 ~g/m3, well below the proposed OSHA limit of 50 ~g/m3.

THE ores of the Tonopah, district are hard, compact and' highly siliceous. They contain from .1 to 2, per cent. of sulfide material, of which argentite is the valuable mineral; occasionally pyrargyrite is found in the richer ore. The sulfide is, chiefly pyrite with small amounts of chalcopyrite,. and sometimes sphalerite. The ore also contains a small amount of gold-about 1 per cent. by weight of the silver present. The major gangue constituent is quartz but frequently considerable rhodonite-called by the miners pink manganese-is present. For primary crushing, jaw and gyratory crushers are used. These crushers are of such capacity that, in most cases, one 8-hr. shift will supply the mill for 24 hr. The Extension Co., at the Victor ore house, passes the ore through a 13 by. 24-in. Blake type McFarland crusher set at 13 in., and at the No. 29 re house, a 14 by 24-in. Blake type Traylor crusher is used. The ore is thus crushed to stamping size in one reduction. The capacity of each crusher is about 40 tons per hr.; the power consumption is 0.6 kw. per ton.

Currently there is a constant and essential concern of preserving nature. Over the years the concern with the environment is increasing, new environmental laws are emerging and being applied more rigorously and consequently emerge economic needs and mineral processing practices and other materials. In this sense briquetting becomes an alternative to fine particles agglomeration by means of pressure and or temperature, with the aid or not of a binder, which allows to get a product not only compressed, which presents shape, size, and adequate mechanical properties. The reduction in volume of the material in some cases (beyond the technological benefits) also allows fine materials can be transported and stored more economically, safely and effectively. The production of coke is greater as the content of better coking coal is, thus he low capacity coking coal is not much used in coke ovens. This research aims to demonstrate that briquetting of mineral coals with low coking coal capacity is possible, additionally allows increased coke production, obtaining then a better yield of coke. Basically they take advantage of low price of no coking coals without changing the quality of the coke produced. Anyway, briquetting became a smart alternative to aggregate values, economy and care for the environment.
