In Japan, evaluation of rock mass is crucial in mountain tunnels that are constructed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) to determine the support pattern that in turns determine the final support structure of the tunnel. The current evaluation method is highly dependent on the observations of on-site expert engineers that grades the rock mass in four levels across nine criteria: A. Condition of tunnel face. B. Condition of excavated surface. C. Compressive rock strength. D. Weathering. E. Spacing of discontinuity. F. Condition of discontinuity. G. Orientation of discontinuity. H. Spring water. I. Water degradation. However, in recent years, the number of said experts are decreasing rapidly due to labour shortage caused mainly by an aging population and declining birth rates. This is one of the biggest challenges that the construction sector currently faces, and this may affect the efficiency of tunnel construction projects in the future. Thus, this study proposes the implementation of a deep learning tool called the convolutional neural network (CNN) to quantitatively evaluate rock fractures on tunnel face. In addition, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is applied to visualise CNN, as well as verify the applicability of CNN to the evaluation of rock fractures. In other words, by creating heat maps of tunnel face images, CNN is utilised to evaluate rock mass in categories that are associated with discontinuities. The CNN model is most accurate when six convolution layers, four pooling layers, and three dense layers are used. This yields an accuracy of 75.0~88.0 per cent. Thus, the CNN model is verified to be feasible method to evaluate rock fractures.

The R&D landscape for ore pre-concentration technologies within mining is characterised by the development of individual technologies and point solutions. This presents METS and mining companies with the combined challenge of understanding how to apply pre-concentration technologies to create maximum value, and how to sustainably integrate the technologies into their businesses to maintain the value. The paper will consider the requirements of an integrated pre-concentration system and presents a portfolio of R&D projects that have co-developed and integrated a suite of new precencentration technologies and methodologies across the mining value chain. Focus areas include in-situ orebody characterisation, blast design, real time cross belt mineral sensing, and consideration of how much data needs to be acquired in order to make value based decisions between ore pre-concentration options. An ore pre-concentration workflow is presented to demonstrate how additional optimisation opportunities are enabled both by moving decision points further upstream in the value chain, and by integrating the concepts of pre-concentration into the design of mineral processing equipment. Additionally, several research projects examine the non-technical factors that present barriers to uptake of new technologies within mining companies. Organisational culture, risk management and socio-political factors are discussed and a set of management tools are presented that allow organisations to self-assess their readiness for new technology uptake, along with process models to assist management with identifying and navigating the ecosystem of stakeholders that are decision makers in the use of pre-concentration technologies.

Mineral hydration is known to result in low flotation recoveries and grades within primary platinum group element ores worldwide. This is because the phyllosilicate minerals derived from hydration reactions of silicate minerals (i) form electrostatic coatings on valuable minerals that in turn hinder collector adsorption, (ii) alter the viscosity of the slurry leading to poor gas dispersion and (iii) decrease the concentrate grade due to naturally-floating gangue. Sodium silicate was investigated because its dispersant, rheology modifying, and depressant properties could prove promising in combating the problems associated with these ore types. Quantitative evaluation by scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed large quantities of serpentine and talc present within the ore sample used in this study, which led to a poor flotation response as indicated by batch flotation tests. Using sodium silicate improved the recoveries and grades at high dosages (>1000 g/t). The zeta potential experiments indicate that improved recoveries are, in part, as a result of the reversal of serpentine surface charge, creating electrostatic repulsion between serpentine and valuable minerals which prevents the coating of valuable minerals by serpentine slimes. Ore dilution and rheology tests indicated that decreased viscosity at high dosages also improved recoveries. Talc micro-flotation tests revealed that the depression of talc occurred at higher sodium silicate dosages, which improved concentrate grade. The processing of nearsurface altered ores is becoming an increasing problem worldwide and the use of sodium silicate proved valuable in mitigating the problems associated with the altered ore investigated in this study. The Peru based tin mining company, Minsur S.A., commissioned Ausmelt Limited to design, supervise construction and commission a tin smelter and refinery for production of refined tin metal. The plant is located 240km south of Lima, near Pisco, Peru and is operated by Funsur S.A., the wholly owned subsidiary of Minsur S.A.. Selection of the Ausmelt Technology followed a series of crucible scale test work and pilot plant trials conducted at Ausmelt's facility in Dandenong, Australia and two feasibility studies undertaken by Ausmelt in 1991 and 1993. Ausrnelt began the plant design in 1994 with the construction phase following in 1995. Commissioning of the plant commenced early in 1996 with a target throughput of 30,000 tonnes per annum of concentrates. In mid 1998 oxygen enrichment of the Ausmelt lance air was introduced to expand the capacity to the throughput of 40,000 tonnes per annum of concentrates. The process route involves the use of an Ausmelt furnace for primary concentrate smelting, followed by a conventional tin pyro-refining circuit to produce high grade tin suitable for sale. Further work continues between Ausmelt and Funsur to investigate the use of an alternative, more economical, fuel source and the installation of a second Ausmelt furnace. The paper reviews the project to date with details of ongoing operations and developments at the Minsur Tin Smelter.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines operated a 2,000-9 (4.4-lb) batch process development unit for recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from automobile catalysts. Virgin monolith, used pellet and used monolith catalyst samples were tested. Leaching twice with 1-pct sodium cyanide (NaCN) solution at 160' C for 1 h in a pressure vessel dissolved over 95 pct of the PGM from virgin catalysts and over 90 pct from used pellet catalysts. Over 85 pct of the PGM was dissolved from used monolith catalysts when a third leaching step was added. PGM concentrates as metallic powder containing over 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM and analyzing greater than 70 pct PGM were recovered by heating the pregnant leach solutions from virgin catalysts to 250' C and used catalyst to 275" C for 1 h. The solution after heating contained primarily sodium carbonate from cyanide decomposition and less than 0.2 ppm total cyanide.

THE Plains of east-central Alberta herein described embrace an area from Viking east to the Saskatchewan boundary and from North Saskatchewan river south to Coronation and Monitor (Figure 1). By far the greater part of this area is deeply drift-covered, and .outcrops of bedrock are relatively few and often widely separated. Within the area there are large morainal hills and others of considerable extent that superficially have all the characters of morainal hills but contain a core of bedrock. These latter, then, were hills when the ice sheet traversed the country and only have been modified by glacial agencies. In many places on them, the drift is but a thin veneer, as is certainly the case in part of the Neutral hills (Figure 2) northeast of Coronation and north of Monitor. In other cases, however, as in the Blackfoot hills, southwest of Lloydminster, the drift is sufficiently thick to conceal practically all the bedrock and in many places no information is available as to whether a bedrock core, representing a pre-glacial hill, is present. There is no question, however, that the larger river valleys, as for example those of the North Saskatchewan and Battle rivers, are in part at least pre-glacial. Proof of this can be demonstrated in many places, because obviously the valleys must have been present in pre-glacial times to allow glacial deposits to have accumulated in them. It is also known that inter-glacial deposits occur. At one locality in Battle River valley, in sec. 30, tp. 45, range 2, west of the 4th mer., the following section occurs( l ): 15 feet of boulder clay with granite and other boulders. 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels containing pebbles of Precambrian rocks and fresh-water shells. From this it is apparent that the 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels must have derived their Precambrian pebbles from a previous glaciation of which the overlying boulder clay represents another ice advance in this area. Thus, although the river valleys contain glacial and interglacial deposits, they have not been filled by them to such an extent that the drainage has been diverted, and in many places, especially in the case of Battle river and some smaller streams, the size of the valley is altogether out of proportion to the size of the stream it now contains.

"INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Weakness zones or faults containing clay-rich gouge represent one of the most challenging rock mass conditions to be encountered during tunneling. In Norway, such conditions count for a large part of the rock support costs, and in cases where the rock support has been insufficient, serious instability and cave-in have in many cases been the result. Most commonly, such cave-in has occurred after water filling of hydropower tunnels, but in some cases it has also occurred in tunnels under excavation and in completed “dry” tunnels. To avoid instability, two important requirements have to be fulfilled: 1) The location of the weakness zone and its character have to be identified in time. 2) The rock support has to be sufficient to withstand the loading caused by the zone. An incident which really brought the problems related to swelling clay into focus was the cave-in at the Hanekleiv road tunnel in 2006. Here, rock fall from the roof as shown in Figure 1 occurred unexpectedly about 10 years after the tunnel was completed. Fortunately this happened at a time with very little traffic, and nobody was injured. This incident emphasized the significance of the issue of swelling clay, although it was found to be caused also by gravitational collapse of the clay-rich gouge material of the weakness zone, and not related to swelling only (Nilsen et al. 2007).In this paper, main focus will be on discussing the characteristic features of swelling clay, test procedures which are being used for characterizing swelling clay, and the reliability of the results from testing for use in support evaluation and design in conditions with swelling clay. It is generally well known that swelling clay may cause considerable pressure on support elements, but quantifying this pressure for reliable analysis and design of rock support is still a great challenge."

"Platinum is a highly valuable resource, its safe and economic extraction is paramount. The success of platinum mining by the bord and pillar method depends heavily on a comprehensive and dependable pillar design method. Pillars need to be large enough to safely support the load and small enough to avoid loss of resources. A critical evaluation of current pillar design systems used in narrow-reef platinum mining was undertaken using practical experience from a large feasibility-stage platinum exploration project, supplemented by observations from several platinum mines in Zimbabwe. An extensive literature survey was undertaken in order to determine the current status of design systems. Through this approach, the shortcomings of current pillar design systems are highlighted. Areas are proposed for further research to obtain a better understanding on how additional factors influence pillar system stability. The exploration work highlighted how rock mass classification methods can be utilized in determining the overall strength of pillars. Current pillar design systems for narrow-reef platinum mining consider width-to-heightratio (usually with different exponents for width and height) and the strength of the pillar material. However, there are many more important factors that are not considered and which have a bearing on pillar system stability. An in-depth study of these parameters with a view to establish effective narrow- reef platinum mining pillar design systems needs to be undertaken. IntroductionPillars have been used as a means of support since the early days of mining. Pillarsupported mining methods such as bord and pillar require a reliable design system for them to be successful. This paper presents an evaluation of the current hard-rock mining pillar design systems as applied to a practical large-scale narrow-reef platinum mining feasibility study. It is vital to have a dependable pillar design system for economic and sustainable mining. Using an extensive database collected from the project, the pillar strength formulae were tested and several discrepancies noted. This necessitates the establishment of more reliable pillar design systems. In narrow-reef platinum mining, large compressive stresses accompanied by geological and geotechnical factors contribute to pillar instability. A well-formulated pillar design system is required that accounts for such factors so as to minimize pillar failures."

The tailings are waste from mineral processing operations. The type of tailings of iron ore processing are classified into sandy tailings and mud. Already the overburden are showing significant levels of useful mineral. Both iron ore`s waste have in your composition phyllosilicates/clay that indicates the potential for use in niche markets as paving and cement. According to several studies, there are various technologies in bench and pilot levels that could be used on a large scale but there is not an economic environment, tax, regulatory and tax set. Many of these technologies are associated with the reuse of tailings and overburden in construction. All these factors influence for that so many initiatives remain in search formats and cannot advance to the new business format. There is no way to set goals of reuse of this waste, as already occurs in China, if there is not a fiscal, tax and economic structure to support such measures. The way to foster and ensure that reuse of tailings and overburden is an incentive for promoting a culture of circular economy that would allow the emergence of an ecosystem between the private, public and Government sectors with the objective of accelerating and subsidize the entire network of reuse of this waste. The closure of the mine could be the tool used to ensure and boost this ecosystem of reutilization to align it with the vocation of the area of the mining law. Following this model, the end of the mining activity could provide a financial return to the local population, a more effective environmental compensation and a reduction in costs related to the closure of the mine. "The chromite deposits of Red Mountain, 10,miles southeast of Seldovia, Alaska, are in an intrusive of ultramafic rocks. The earliest reference to the deposits was made by U.S. Grant3/; J.B. Mertic, Jr. 4/ made a brief examination in 1917; and A.C. Gill5/ spent 7 weeks studying the ore bodies and geology of the region in 1918. The Federal Geological Survey had a field party in the region from July until September 1940 and the Red Mountain area was mapped and geological data were assembled by P.W. Guild.6/A preliminary investigation of the Kenai chromite deposits was made in July 1941 by R. S. Sanford,7/district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by P. W. Guild, assistant geologist of the Geologi¬cal Survey. This was followed by surface sampling and core drilling, which were completed in September 1942 under the direction of John W. Cole,8 associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines. G. O. Gates, associate geologist, and A, B. Unkelsbay, junior geologist, of the Geological Survey, logged cores and interpreted geologic features revealed by Bureau of Mines drilling and trenching.9/J. C. Roehm, associate engineer of the Territorial Department of Mines; examined the Red Mountain area in august 1941.10/Additional exploration of other deposits in. the Red Mountain area was completed during the summer of 194. Work consisted of surface sampling, core drilling, and mapping. G. O. Gates, associate geologist of the Geological Survey, spent 4 days in August investigating results of the Bureau of Mines program.Throughout the exploratory work conducted by the Bureau of Mines the cooperation of Red Mountain Chromite, Inc., and especially of John Blodgett, Jr., and Collis 2, Druley, president and superintendent, respectively, was greatly appreciated. Use of their camp in the Windy River cirque and shops at Kasitsna Bay facilitated the Bureau of Mines program."

This paper contains a review of the development of blast furnace? slag handling and processing technology in the Ironmaking industry over the past 30 years, with an emphasis on economic and environmental factors. The requirements and practice of air-cooling slag for use as aggregate and of pelletizing and granulating slag for use in cement manufacture are described. The operation of slag pits, slag pots or ladles, the slag pelletizer and early granulation systems are compared with the new continuous .granulation, dewatering and handling systems developed in the past decade.

From 1989 to 1992 Rio Tinto Minera has developed and implemented a productivity program in its Huelva Plant, including Smelter, Acid Plant and Electrorefinery. This Plan was designed in order to increase productivity, reduce emissions and produce a better quality of cathodes. Informal gold mining operations in the Amazon emit about 100 tonnes of mercury annually because of poor amalgamation practice. Lack of information and the complexity of mercury transformations hinder effective action to prevent such pollution and/or monitor its extent. In the past, mathematical equations have been formulated to deal with the correlation of natural variables and mercury in biota but often, the error range is too great to provide useful models. Projection of physico-chemical variations in an environment subjected to mercury emissions onto the extent of bioaccumulation is fraught with many uncertainties and unknowns such as internal correlations between variables and the site-specific nature of biota contamination. Often assumptions about closed systems are invalid when applied to natural environments. This work presents a heuristic approach to this problem in which amalgamation methods and natural variables are dealt with using an IF-THEN rule-based system that concludes about levels of emission and risk of bioaccumulation. The system is able to handle uncertain or vague data and yet still provide useful output. Belief in mercury oxidation or dangerous conditions are examined using Fuzzy Logic techniques and Inference Equations. These belief levels are derived from thermodynamic equilibrium data together with field observations of natural variables. This procedure can reduce the need for sophisticated analytical equipment and can provide information and diagnosis to non-technical people.

The rapid growth and development of the Soviet coal industry rank the U. S. S. R. with the United States among the leading coal-producing countries. The coal resources of the Soviet Union are among the largest in the world, although coal development has been hindered by the disadvantageous location of the coal deposits with respect to the major consuming centers. Although coal production in the U. S. S. R. reached a record high, the total energy output of mineral fuels in 1957 was still far below that of the United States because a significant part of Soviet coal output was lignites or lower rank coals. Although the Soviet coal industry soon may exceed that of the United States in tons produced, the energy equivalent of Soviet output will be considerably less because of the inclusion of a high percentage of lower rank coals. Energy sources in the United States also involve large quantities of oil and natural gas, whereas coal supplies most primary energy in the Soviet Union.

[Coals of low-volatile rank cannot be coked without admixing large proportions of high-volatile coal in the usual type of byproduct-coke oven, because they expand excessively and exert side thrust, which ruins the oven walls. Some medium-volatile coals also give trouble. Since high-rank coals produce a strong, blocky coke, it is desirable to have the rank as high as practicable, particularly in the manufacture of foundry coke. Accordingly, it has become the practice to mix or blend high-volatile shrinking, coals with as much low-volatile coal as possible and still have a mixture that will not deform the walls or cause difficulty in pushing the coke. Occasionally, the safe limit of low-volatile coal has been exceeded and ovens have been damaged. It is desirable, therefore, to rave a reliable method of determining the expanding tendencies of mixtures before they are charged into the ovens. Furthermore, coal charges somewhat in its properties as mining progresses, and therefore, mixtures found to be safe at one time may cease to be so subsequently, particularly if nearly the maximum allowable percentage of low-volatile coal is being used.]

THE object of most size reduction operations in the mineral industry is to liberate the grains of valuable minerals in the ore from those of the gangue. This is usually accomplished by crushing and grinding the entire mass of ore until there is only a small probability that any single particle contains more than one mineral. During this size reduction only limited control exists over size or composition of the particles exposed to the breaking action, and there is no control over the paths followed by cracks generated during the operation. This lack of control usually results in overgrinding and in production of large quantities of very fine material. The first detriment, overgrinding, is costly in itself, but when combined with the second factor it is doubly so. Not only is the fracture of a free particle unnecessary—the fracture of these particles may also make subsequent separation operations difficult, inefficient, and wasteful. It has been pointed out' that if the object of size reduction is to liberate the valuable mineral component of the ore then, ideally, fracture should follow intergranular paths to the exclusion of trans-granular ones. This would result in liberation of the valuable minerals with as little size reduction as possible. This ideal comminution operation is referred to as intergranular comminution, and it was the object of the investigation to determine the extent to which it could be developed by heat treatments. There are many indications in the literature that heating rocks prior to crushing may be favorable. Reports by Holman,2 Yates3 and Myers' are pertinent. These investigators showed that heating certain rocks prior to crushing them did, in fact, improve their crushing characteristics in that fewer fines were produced, although the fact that intergranular comminution was being effected apparently was overlooked. In addition, Sosman noted that if there is appreciable anisotropism in the thermal coefficients of expansion of even a pure mineral, then considerable permanent separation of the grains of the rock can be expected as a result of heating the rock to a high temperature.' By the same token, if there are ap- preciable differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of the various minerals of a multi-component rock, similar results should be obtained by heating this rock. This has been tested, partially, by Brenner," who obtained patents covering the heat treatment of some pegmatitic rocks in order to facilitate comminution of these materials. It has also been demonstrated that this may occur in taconite." Also, the possibility of causing decomposition of one mineral in a rock as a means of promoting intergranular fracture has been considered. Seigle2 and Schiffman et al. have obtained patents on such processes as applied to calcareous iron ores. These reports all indicate that heat treatments prior to crushing may contribute materially to intergranular comminution, but they also indicate that no organized attempt has been made to determine the controlling factors of the method or to determine its applicability in general. The present article is a report on the initial phase of such an investigation. The authors have reviewed the claims of prior investigators and have attempted, also, to establish the factors that might determine the applicability of heat treatments in the mineral industry. In this work 2000-g samples of various rocks were heated in a small laboratory furnace and crushing and sizing operations were carried out in standard laboratory equipment. All samples of each rock were as nearly identical as possible in particle size, grain size, and composition and contained only lumps coarse enough to contain many grains each. Tests on Granite A number of tests were made on a coarse grained Finnish granite obtained in the form of coarse chips from a local monument yard. This rock exhibited little variation from piece to piece in either composition or grain size. The minerals contained were quartz, orthoclase, small amounts of hornblende, and minute quantities of mica. Grain size ranged from about 1 mm to about 3 mm. Temperature of the Heat Treatment: In some cases the granite was heated to a particular temperature and crushed, hot, immediately upon withdrawal from the furnace—in others the rock was allowed to cool before crushing, but without quenching to room temperature after heating. In most tests on granite the heating period was about 2 hr with the furnace at the highest temperature for about 1 hr. Cases in which these periods were varied greatly will be presented separately.

The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

Largely inherited from the past and from strictly internal laboratory use, the certification of reference material using round-robin assaying is often insufficient for the use made today for external assay laboratory control by client parties. Certification often needs to be revisited on the basis of existing round-robin data, especially to derive reproducibility parameters to the end of establishing probabilistic performance gates for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch-ærejectionÆ). The most common difficulty arises when only a few certification samples have been analysed in one single batch by each laboratory, so that the round-robin data do not contain the full variability that needs to be quantified. Existing certification data sets from properly submitted round-robin samples were studied using analysis of variance to derive a remedial method, leading to the proposal of default correction factors to restore full variability estimates when no other avenue is available.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends that occupational exposures to respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica* be controlled by complying with the provisions presented in this document. These recommendations are designed to protect the health and provide for the safety of workers exposed to respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica for up to 10 hr/day during a 40-hr workweek over a working lifetime. The information presented in this document demonstrates that underground and surface coal miners are at risk of developing simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), silicosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Adherence to the recommendations in this document should prevent or greatly reduce the risk of adverse health effects in workers exposed to respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica. NIOSH recommends that preventive efforts be focused primarily on reducing worker exposures. Effective health and hazard surveillance and medical screening are also useful components of a comprehensive prevention effort.

The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.
