Before 1950, hot working was simply deforming above the recrystallization point and gave a soft product compared to cold working. From 1960 onwards, improved testing in compression and torsion (stress, strain rate, temperature, quenching) provided valid specimens for microstructural analysis by polarized optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Indeed, TEM was essential to uncovering the hot working mechanisms because it could distinguish between cold and hot substructures (dynamic recovery) in either initial or new grains (dynamic recrystallization). Over the years, teams at Concordia, McGill and UBC obtained NSERC support for students and equipment. CANMET built up a hot forming group having capabilities from high-rate cam-plastometer compression to rolling of experimental alloy billets; this was combined with latest metallographic instruments for fundamental research. Al alloys of every class (2000, 3000, 5000, 7000, 8000) were studied to understand the effects of solutes, precipitates, dispersoids and composites. The complex flow patterns in extrusion were clarified and modeled by finite element methods. Physical simulations of rolling schedules (up to 20 passes and reductions of 98%) by torsion provided evidence of microstructure development during both the passes and the softening intervals, thus clarifying development of texture in different alloys. Mud houses are common structures in most South African rural homes closer to the mining operations. Fulltime dwellers in these properties are often the elderly. The mine codes of practice and the South African legislative instruments attempt to define the damage criteria to limit the effect of the blast-induced noise and ground vibrations to different structures. All these assessment criteria are based on the peak particle velocity and noise generated during blasting. The South African safe limit criterion that was adopted was initially derived from the international standards, which were then used as a local guideline. This paper evaluates the currently adopted safe limit criteria used in South Africa for a mud house, currently rated at 6 mm per second and 120 decibels to134 decibels, for blast-induced seismicity and noise, respectively. Further, a study was performed on a residential house near a coal mine (5.26 km) based in Mpumalanga following numerous complaints by the owner, launched at the mine and to the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources. The aim of the study was to measure the magnitude of blast-induced triggers experienced at the aggrieved homestead and to establish if there is a likelihood that an irritation or damage may be caused by these triggers. The seismometer was installed at about 2 m from the mudhouse, from 1 July 2022 to 31 of July 2022. Five blast-induced triggers were recorded during the period showing an average of 0.09 mm/s and 121 decibels for blast-induced seismicity and noise, respectively. The results obtained indicated a maximum seismicity of 0.15 mm/s. This seismicity was below the perceptible vibrations obtained from daily home activities such as walking, jumping, and door slamming, which produce 0.8 mm/s, 7.1 mm/s, and 12.7 mm/s, respectively. Seismicity was therefore not likely to have caused any annoyance and or damage. For noise, the results indicated a maximum of 123 decibels and an average of 121 decibels from five events recorded. A literature review suggests that slight damage may occur when airblast frequencies match the natural frequencies of structures at 120 decibels. Based on these results, it can be concluded, therefore, that the noise, rather than seismicity, is more likely to be the cause of damage to the structure assessed. For improvement, a new approach is proposed based on relating the safe limits to the structural and human response.

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916,1 and an investigation of Illinois coal-washing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coal. OBJECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION The present investigation was limited to a study of screening as applied in preparing mineral products with the expectation of obtaining more comprehensive information on screening machinery.

A jet pump injector was developed and successfully tested, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of a jet injector for introducing coarse coal into an operating slurry face haulage system: In Phase I a variety of injection concepts were evaluated, and the jet pump was identified as best, due to its simplicity, compactness and performance potential. In Phase IIA subscale jet pump injector tests were conducted, and a computer model of a jet pump injector was developed whose performance predictions correlated well with subscale test results. In Phase IIB various system configurations were defined for integrating a jet pump injector into a fully operational underground coarse slurry face haulage system, further highlighting the feasibility and practicality of such a system. In Phase III a full-scale mobile haulage vehicle embodying a jet pump injector and coal sizing equipment was detail designed into a practical vehicle with attractive performance characteristics. More importantly, fully operational full scale jet pump injector -and feeder/breaker subassemblies were tested and proven successful in their ability to down-size coal to 3" in all 3 dimensions and to consistantly provide slurry of 4217 weight concentration at 6.4 TPM throughput under a wide range of operating conditions including zero to maximum feed rate within 5 seconds.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1:0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting, furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of SO2 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

For the purpose of this discussion a small flotation concentrator is defined as a facility having a designed ore feed rate of 1,000 metric tons per day (MTPD), or less. The decision to design and construct a small flotation concentrator is the culmination of a series of logical steps relative to the ex¬ploitation of a potential ore body. The information required for a rational and timely decision regarding plant design and construction is usually contained in a feasibility report. The information required in a thorough feasibility report has been summarized (1) (2) as follows: Type of mine or plant and proposed daily, monthly, and yearly production of all intermediate and final products. Quantity of indicated ore reserves. Location of project illustrated by a map showing surroundings, trans-portation facilities, and existing utilities.

E. Wood. - It is shown that explosion shattering by impact is favored by large charges and by low ratio of water to charge. For 400-gram charges of dolomite crushed through 48 mesh the steam costs are less than 5 cents per ton of dolomite obtained. This is within the range of present steam costs for ball-milling dolomite.Electrical Properties of Minersl Aggergates I. Natural and Artificial Aggregates Crystallized Lead Sulphide By R.S. Dean and John Koster - This paper deals with the electrical properties of natural and synthetic galena. It is shown that massive crystalline galena has a normal positive temperature coefficient of resistance, whereas fine-grained steel galena has a negative temperature coefficient, the curve R v. T being exponential in form. That steel galena behaves somewhat like a leaky condenser is indicated by ballistic and alternating-current bridge measurements. In determining the cause of the erratic results of alternating-current resistance measurements it was observed that the measured re¬sistance was a function of the current through the specimen. The direct-current resistance was found to be proportional to the square of a superimposed radio-frequency current and independent of the frequency.The influence of grain size or the amount of metallic interface on the voltage-current characteristics at various temperatures on synthetic galena pastilles was studied. It is proved that the volts v. amperes curves are linear for all sizes and temperatures, that they have an intercept which is apparently a linear function of the temperature, and that their slopes are exponential functions of the temperature and give rise to a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.Apparatus for determing the Magnetic Constants of Mineral Powders by V,H, Gottschalk,and C. W. Davis.- A modified isthmus permeameter having a spark-suppressed primary and a multiplier in the secondary circuit to regulate the effect of capsules functioning as a twin isthmus is used to obtain quantitative data and normal induction and hystersis curves from small amounts of powdered material at fields surpassing 3.000 oersteds. Data and curves are given to demonstrate the calibration of the apparatus and the reproducibility of its results. Applications and limitations of the apparatus are noted.Magnetization Curves for Magnetite Poeders by V. H. Gottschalk and F. S. Wartman.- This paper gives measurements on four lots of purified and analyzed magnetites in mixed fractions with especial reference to the variation of permeability with grain size and with dilution by an inert material."

A modeling, simulation and optimization study of a complex industrial fluorspar beneficiation plant (Kadipani, Gujarat, India) with fourteen/ten flotation banks is carried out to find an optimum/near-optimum circuit for the given quality of feed ore. The phenomenological flotation model developed by Mehrotra and Kapur (1974) is used for circuit optimization. Two different optimization problems are formulated and solved. The first optimization problem involves a single objective function, which uses available plant data to estimate the feed-characterizing parameters, i.e., the flotation rate constants, by minimizing the weighted sum-of-square errors between the computed and plant values. The second optimization problem involves two objective functions to obtain several simplified circuits. The number of non-linking streams and the overall recovery of the concentrate, i.e., the acid-grade product, are maximized simultaneously in this problem. The single-objective variant (SGA-II-mJG) of the binary-coded elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm with the jumping gene adaptation, NSGA-II-mJG, is used for the first problem, while NAGA-II-mJG (Guria et al., 2005 a) is used for the second problem. Simplified circuits with a few split streams are proposed on the basis of the present optimization study, which enhance the recovery of the acid-grade product without affecting its quality, for a given total volume of the flotation cell-bank. Even though the optimal solutions have certain drawbacks, they suggest a meaningful direction in using an iterative fitting of parameters to such optimal circuits, followed by re-optimization. "Integrating environmental considerations into the product traditional process design is now the major challenge for steel industry. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is nowadays considered as an appropriate method for assessing environmental impact and selecting new technologies to reduce CO2 emissions for steel industry.In this paper we propose a new methodological concept which combines LCA thinking with process simulation software in order to carry out the life cycle inventory of classical steelmaking process.Using Aspen PlusTM software, a physicochemical model has been developed for the integrated steelmaking route. This model gives the possibility to carry out life cycle inventories for different operational practices in order to optimise the use of energy, to calculate CO2 and other emissions and to control the mass and the heat balances of processes.It is also shown that such approach can be used to design and assess new technologies for steelmaking without large industrial application.IntroductionDuring recent years, it was recognised that CO2 emissions are the major factor of the global warming effect. In order to meet Kyoto requirements, the steel industry is embracing the challenge of sustainable development by improving its competitiveness and economic success while reducing its environmental impacts. Integrating environmental considerations into the traditional product design process, for powerful eco-efficiency, is now one of the major priorities for steelmakers.The European Steel Industry has measured up to this challenge by creating ULCOS (Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking) consortium that has taken up the mission to develop breakthrough steelmaking process with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions (Eurofer, 2005). Large open stopes mined by vertical crater retreat or sublevel s are sometimes backfilled with uncemented sand to support the stope walls and alleviate rock bursts. The failure of bulkheads in two different mines prompted a research project at the Bureau of Mines to prevent a recurrence of these failures. A series of laboratory tests with drains and sand filters was conducted to measure the bulk-head pressures when adequate drainage was maintained. Results showed that bulkhead pressure was reduced to near zero while drains were in operation, as compared to full hydrostatic pressure when drains were blocked or drainage was restricted. A relatively simple, free-draining bulkhead was shown to be adequate.

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

The Bureau of Mines has engaged m a program to determine the availability of land for mineral exploration and development in Alaska. Land availability, based on ownership and Federal and State laws and policies, is compared with mineral terranes and mineral deposits. This is the fifth of six regional studies, which cover the State with a comprehensive set of maps and data compilations. This study covers an area of 112.3 million acres in western Alaska. In July 1986, 41.0 million acres, 37% of the study area, were available for mineral exploration and development; 14.6 million acres, 13%, were available with restrictions; and 56.7 million acres, 50%, were unavailable. Nearly 65% of the unavailable land is classified as national parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, and wild and scenic rivers. Of the 34.0 million acres of mineral terranes that underlie the study area, 12.9 million acres, 38%, are available for exploration and development; 3.6 million acres, 11%, are available with restrictions; and 17.5 million acres, 51%, are unavailable.

The East Tintic district in central Utah has produced ores of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc valued at more than $120,000,000. All of this ore has been produced from blind ore bodies in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are concealed beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks and cut by intrusive bodies of Eocene age. The Paleozoic rocks, which range in age from Early Cambrian to Mississippian form the core and limbs of a large, northtrending asymmetric anticline that is cut by low-angle thrust faults, high-angle transcurrent faults, mineralized fissures and faults, and normal faults that are both older and younger than the mineralized fissures. The ore bodies generally may be grouped into two classes: ( 1) massive replacement bodies that are rich in silver, lead, zinc and manganese and (2) fissure veins that are valuable primarily for their content of gold, copper, and silver. The replacement ore bodies are localized chiefly in the Middle Limestone Member of the Ophir Formation of Middle Cambrian age where it has been thrust-faulted against older or younger rocks and cut by northeast-trending mineralized fissure zones. The fissure veins primarily are productive only in the Lower Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Extensive lowgrade deposits of lead-zinc-silver ore recently have been discovered in Devonian carbonate rocks in the Lower plate of the East Tintic thrust fault but as yet are unevaluated. The principal guides to ore include: ( 1) intersections of northeast-trending fissures and crossbreaking faults that brecciate the carbonate rocks; (2) zones of late-stage pyritic, calcitic, and sericitic alteration in the lavas; ( 3) primary geochemical anomalies in the altered rocks; and ( 4) mineral zoning patterns of the known ore bodies. The present development of the Burgin mine would seem to assure the continued productivity of the district for at least a decade.

FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat- room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.

Current and potential dragline reclamation usage was evaluated for the U.S. coalfields based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and contacts with manufacturers. It was concluded that current mining plans have been adapted to federal and state strip mine and reclamation laws in ways which limit the potential for dragline reclamation systems at active mine sites. At abandoned conventional contour mine sites in steep-sloping areas such as central Appalachia, however, it was found that dragline reclamation systems have great potential application and may be the only practical solution to many reclamation problems. Alternative dragline systems were examined for restoring abandoned sites, and it was concluded that a tower excavator system offered superior characteristics and should be evaluated and developed under field conditions. A testing program was developed to provide a framework for the monitoring and analysis of cost, production and environmental data during a field demonstration of a tower excavator system.
