In 2018, the German Federal government decided to phase-out the energy production using coal-fired power plants and to terminate lignite mining completely by 2038 at the latest. This decision will impact approximately 60,000 jobs. It will have an enormous impact on the socioeconomic development especially in all German lignite mining regions. To avoid economic and political friction, it is of utmost importance to achieve a sustainable transition towards a post-mining era and to offer residents in the mining districts perspectives for a good future that include adequate job opportunities. In this context, the German government is providing massive structural aids early on. As previous closure experiences from the German hard coal mining industry have shown, it takes at least a generation to overcome the effects of a strategic closing decision of this magnitude. Therefore, the planned closure process appears to be a long time at first glance. In fact, however, it is not.

The amount of pyrite in copper concentrates fed to the CESL Process can vary appreciably. The fraction of pyrite that oxidizes influences both capital and operating costs and is therefore an important variable. The present paper explores operating conditions that influence the extent of pyrite oxidation and the probable overall reaction chemistry under CESL conditions.

Automation of mining operations is pushed by cost pressure and cyclical product prices. However, until now the different types of equipment were not able to communicate electronically with each other or with central computer systems. Therefore, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ‘common electronic language’ for easy and standardized data exchange. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automation in general and on the markets for third party components and software. The standard’s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It consists of an ‘horizontal’ structure defining ‘Application Profiles’ for different types of data sets. An additional ‘vertical’ structure (‘Equipment Profiles’) implements equipment dependent definitions for each of the applicable Application Profiles. First profiles will be available for Drill Rigs. The standard bases on the XML language thus enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases. IREDES data sets may use storage media as well as networking infrastructures for information exchange. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the IREDES work groups. It is open for participation of all interested organizations. First prototyping applications are expected to start during 2001, the first products may be available in the following year. The aim of instruction in a metallurgical laboratory is to make real the principles on which metallurgical processes and operations are based, and to foster the spirit of investigation. The materials with which experiments are carried out are ores, metals, and metallic compounds. The method varies with the end sought. A class may work as a whole, each member contributing his share to the solution of a problem, or the students may carry on investigations independently; the former exemplifies class-research; the latter, individual research. It is with a branch of the former, with special reference to ore-treatment, that the present paper deals. In smelting an ore by a well-established process, the result is shown by analyzing the products to see whether their compositions correspond to those calculated in making up the charge; by taking account of stock to show the distribution of metal in the different products made and the losses from dust and volatilization; by casting a thermal balance to find the distribution and losses of heat; and by making a cost-sheet to ascertain, as far as possible, the necessary outlay of money. In lixiviation and amalgamation, the mode of operating has to be varied to adapt a process to the individual ore. Here a number of tests become necessary. Each will consist of a series of experiments with one variable, in order to find the conditions under which the variable gives the best result; a summary of several tests will give the best method of operating. IN a technical civilization, that is. one whose major difference from past civilizations is its enormous development of technology, in transportation, communication, labor saving, centralized control, and mass production, it is natural that the most critical problems should be those that arise out of technologic advances; it is natural also that a. man who understands these advances should be chosen as the leader to meet these problems. This was done in the selection of Herbert Hoover as President of the United States. Mr. Hoover was a good, and perhaps a great President. But he was not a great politician and that ensured his defeat when a crisis came.

The bright annealing of copper is an industrial practice of considerable importance. In connection with this process, equilibrium concentrations of carbon monoxide and dioxide, which may exist in contact with copper and cuprous oxide at elevated temperatures, are of interest. Data obtained at the Pacific Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines enable estimates of these equilibrium concentrations to be made in two independent ways. Although the publication of final data on one method can not take place until certain further experimental work is accomplished, repeated requests which the Bureau of Minus has had for data relative to the annealing and deoxidation of copper justify the present preliminary report. This paper deals with the calculation of gas concentrations in the reduction of cuprous oxide, using more scientific data which will be published later, and refers especially to those conditions of temperature and concentration of practical implication, and from which critical limits ensue.

Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. An idea of the character of Noranda concentrating ore will be gained from an inspection of the following mineralogical analysis of the ore treated by the mill during 1933: MineRal Content Mineral ConteNt Chalcopyrite, per cent..... 6.8 Silica and silicates, per cent............ 18.3 Pyrite, per cent........... 22.1 Gold, native and as telluride, oz. per ton 0.15 Pyrrhotite, per cent....... 51.5 Silver, probably as argentite, oz. per tou 0.35 Magnetite, per cent....... 0.5 Thesr figures, which are typical, show that over 73 per cent of the ore treated consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. This manual was prepared to provide essential information to be used when critical decisions pertaining to mine fire recovery or other disaster situations become necessary. It is a state of the art report based upon technology and instruments developed, under a Bureau of Mines Research Contract. A detailed description of the development work and results of full-scale field testing is contained in the Technical Report, Vol. II, of USBM Contract Report H0122045, "Extinguishing Coal Mine Fires by Remote Scaling." Further research and development work has been programmed; consequently, a more complete manual providing detailed instructions and describing available instruments and equipment will be published. Those instruments and special equipment described in this manual must be considered prototype; methodology and applied technology will require special expertise. Consequently, any prospective application of this remote sealing technique will require assistance by the United States Bureau of Mines Research organization and experts from the contractor who developed the basic technology and instruments.

The application of microwaves has a demonstrated potential for the ultimate removal of water from fine coal. The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems drilling microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper the dielectric properties of various ranks of coal are presented as a function of frequency and moisture content. The measured dielectric data are incorporated into electromagnetic and thermal models of coal which predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave heating.

Instrumental analysis is an indispensable tool to many phases of research on rare-earth metals and their compounds; therefore, the development of new and improved instrumental techniques is essential. This report describes an emission spectrometric analytical method using direct-current carbon-arc excitation of various rare-earth-oxide mixtures. Lanthanum oxide serves the dual purpose of an internal standard and a constant major constituent. The versatility of the method was demonstrated by three different applications: (a) Analysis of complex rare-earth concentrates; (b) determination of impurities in high-purity rare-earth oxides; and (c) detection of rare-earth elements in other types of matrices, such as those resulting from beneficiation of rare-earth ores. The average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10.0 percent was 14.6 percent for a group of complex synthetic mixtures of rare-earth oxides. An average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.05 to 0.50 percent was 21 percent for a group of high-purity rare-earth oxides.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

The bulk of plain carbon steel is produced through conventional Basic Oxygen or Electric Arc Furnace routes where the development of the AC Ladle Furnace has made it possible to also produce alloy steels. Smaller Ladle Furnaces have limitations such as lower efficiency; high electrode consumption and diminutive yields rendering them uneconomical to operate and making the processing of low carbon steel grades difficult due to carbon pick up. The demand for special steels and alloys with strict specifications is increasing while commodity prices remain competitive. The production of special steels and alloys have specific process control requirements and the development of the induction melting furnace (IMF) has made it possible to produce smaller batches economically. Refining and alloying of the melt in the IMF further enhance the efficiency. The INDUREF furnace offers increased productivity and flexibility through increased thermal efficiency and can be utilised for holding molten metal for further processing such as granulating, atomising, nitriding, alloy additions and desulphurisation of Ferro-alloys and steels. The system utilises a specially engineered ladle which is placed in an induction-heating assembly comprised of a stationary water-cooled copper coil and lamination packs. The addition of equipment for vacuum degassing and decarburisation of steels and alloys is also feasible. Benefits are: ? No electrode consumption or carbon pick-up ? Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.

GERMANY'S recent collapse and the occupation by the Allies of the coal fields of the Ruhr, the Saar, Silesia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia have focused attention on the postwar coal problems of Europe. American coal operators are interested deeply in what is happening in Britain, particularly in the discussion of plans to rehabilitate and reorganize the entire British coal mining industry, as such reorganization will probably determine the place Britain will occupy in the European coal markets for the next few decades. The continuing decline of British out-ut per man-shift, particularly during wartime, has resulted in a most serious effort to determine whether this unfortunate trend is due to the physical condition of the coal seams, poor management, poor engineering and planning, inadequate use of power and machinery, or failure of labor to co-operate with management.

Airborne rock dust poses serious long-term health complications to workers in the underground mining and civil environment where rock excavation is utilised. During drilling, airborne rock particles are immediately released into the breathable environment where additionally, the settled dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production. The purpose of this study is to build a characterisation suite of dust particles such that underground operations can implement more appropriate dust suppression and mitigation techniques in accordance to pick wear. Therefore, concrete is cut to create a preliminary dust characterisation baseline, where future cutting tests will be performed on limestone and sandstone rocks.In this study, three conical pick wears (new, moderately worn, and fully worn picks) are used to generate dust from a concrete block and characteristics are statistically compared between the dusts. Airborne respirable particles are collected during cutting and deposited fine material, orparticles left on the surface of the block, are collected after cutting. The dusts are then analysed through standardised methods, field emission scanning electron microscope image capture with image analyses, and laser diffraction methods. Findings reveal that the worn pick generated thehighest concentration of respirable dust, all picks generated dust containing quartz, the three picks generally generated respirable dusts with similar particle shapes (in terms of roundness, roughness, and aspect ratio), and the worn pick generated the largest deposited fine material particles.

This is the first in a series of progress reports on the longwall subsidence research program at the Bureau of Mines Denver Research Center. As part of this program, the Bureau and the Utah Power and Light Co. are cooperating on a study conducted at the Deer Creek Mine, which is directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. A monitoring network has been established at the Deer Creek Mine to measure subsidence over four adjacent longwall panels. To date, two panels have been mined. Subsidence began as the first panel was mined and continued for 1 year following completion of the panel, during which time the adjacent panel was mined" A maximum of 2.7 feet of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at a depth of 1,500 feet. Because of the length of time that subsidence continued after mining, the final subsidence profiles and angle of draw have not yet been determined.

"The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. The slurry systems at Aurora experience high rates of wear, and mission lengths on current slurry pumps are nominally 1500-2000 hours. Recent work has enabled a better understanding of the significant adverse effect of large particle impingement damage to impeller vane leading edges - which is the known life determining issue for Aurora hydrotransport pumps. A new pump design has been developed with a larger diameter impeller and increased vane lengths, and is expected to triple Aurora’s mission length for hydrotransport pumps.INTRODUCTIONSlurry Pumps are Critical Equipment at SyncrudeSlurry pumps are a critical component in Syncrude’s operations. In a typical Aurora application, each pump stage helps move over 8000 dry tonnes per hour of oil sand, plus an equal volume of process water that has been added to create the slurry. The average impeller life in oil sand hydrotransport service at Aurora has been nominally 1500-2000 hours, or 12-16 million tonnes of oil sand pumped. Generally, the slurry pump application at Aurora has proven very difficult to improve due to the unique combination of high sand abrasivity, 125 mm (5”) large particle top size (lumps), and high flow rate relative to basic pump size; a factor that results in higher than optimal impeller vane speeds for the service conditions.PROJECT BASISSlurry Pumps are the Reliability Bottleneck at AuroraSlurry pumps are currently the shortest-lived components that determine the overall system run length at Aurora, in Hydrotransport, Extraction and Tailings. Vibrating screens and piping had been previous bottlenecks, but their reliability has been improved through upgrades in equipment design and wear materials. Both vibrating screens and piping can now achieve 4000 hour mission lengths."

"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"
