"During the last decade, mining companies have been overwhelmed by technological solutions to perceived problems. This is particularly true with information technology where rapid advances have resulted in a professional climate characterized by technomania — the perception that failure to adopt emerging technologies will result in a loss of competitive advantage. This paper describes the applicability of structured analysis and design techniques as an appropriate methodology for integrating emerging technologies in the mining industry. The potential of this approach to improve overall mine effectiveness through improved communication and co-ordination between operations and maintenance is discussed. IntroductionA strong working relationship between the operations and maintenance departments in both open pit and underground mines is fundamental to the overall success of the mining endeavour. Unfortunately, for many mines, this characterization is far from accurate. Short-range production targets dominate the day-to-day management of the mines. This can be seen in Bostwick and Buchanan’s (1993) report on American Barrick Resources efforts to achieve an aggressive 415 000 tpd mining program at their Goldstrike operation in Nevada. When production managers do not meet their quotas, the finger is often pointed at maintenance. As a result, a confrontational culture can develop between the two organizations, resulting in a lack of cooperation that exacerbates the problem. Historically, production planning has taken priority over maintenance planning. This is reasonable since production is the primary purpose of the mine with maintenance serving in a support role. This basic relationship remains intact today. However, the trends toward mechanization, increasing levels of automation, and larger equipment, have resulted in increased reliance on the equipment used in the mine. As a result, downtime costs now go well beyond the direct labour associated with the repair of the machine. Lost production costs due to downtime resulting from failed equipment are becoming an increasingly important factor in determining a mine’s overall economic performance."

IRSID has in its laboratories two experi mental counter-current reduction furnaces allo- wing the simulation of the physico-chemical conditions of reduction in any gas-solid coun- ter-current process, including the blast furnace and direct-reduction shaft-furnaces. The counter current is realized by an electric furnace mo- ving along a laboratory tube filled with the material to be tested. The reducing gas stream in the tube travels in the same direction as the furnace After reduction, twenty samples, with dif- ferent degrees of reduction and which can be related to different levels of an industrial furnace, are taken from the tube and subjected to various quality tests. Experiments were realized to determine the behaviour of various types of industrial pellets when reduced under either blast furnace or shaft furnace conditions. The results show the large influence of the reducing conditions on any pa- rameter characteristic of the quality of the pellets : reduction efficiency, swelling, cru- shing strength and disintegration.

Particulate matter (PM) is one of the main actors related to air pollution caused by surface mining. Fugitive dust, considered as particulate matter that cannot be collected by conventional measures, is classified by the particle size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes PM as coarse and fine particles based on the particle size being less than 10 μm (PM10) and less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Basic operations of surface mining such as drilling and blasting, loading, haulage, and processing are processes that can potentially generate fugitive dust. Regulations and legislations enforce the mining industry to use environmental monitoring systems, fugitive dust level measured by PM10 level as part of this. Air quality monitors are positioned at different locations around surface coal mines and track air quality levels during production. This study introduces a data-driven methodology to handle air quality issues related to fugitive dust at surface coal mines. Data is sourced from different mine equipment in real-time and they are integrated with air quality monitoring systems to provide information to support decisions for fugitive dust. The method is implemented and demonstrated in a case study at a large surface coal mine.

"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. Slim hole bit performance and cost all compared for overall bit averages as part of analysis."

The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident re-construction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed namely (i)remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sightlines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

THE use of color adds a new beauty, power, and versatility to metallography. This has been amply demonstrated in a number of public exhibits and on the walls of corporate, government, and university metallographic laboratories around the world. Indeed, in a number of cases, the color not only is of esthetic value but is scientifically essential to the competent examination of particular samples and systems. Optical strain analysis,' determination of true grain size in U-A1 alloys: phase identification in Nb-base alloys,3 analysis of transformation rates in heat-treated Nb-Zr alloys,4 measurement of solidification segregation in cast Nb-Zr alloys,' study of the intermediate phases in Nb/Sn diffusion couples,6 investigation of the oxidation kinetics at various surface orientations in single crystals,7'8 and a number of other research efforts9'10 would have been vastly more difficult without the extra clarity and distinction introduced by color—either the colors resulting from particular polarized light techniques or the interference colors obtained by oxidation. It is unfortunate that the beauty of colored micro-structures cannot be shared more widely, but the economics of publishing a technical magazine apparently prohibits color plates except under extraordinary circumstances. It is doubly unfortunate that no convenient, general method exists for communicating the information available in colored microstructures to the scientific community. True, in some instances the color changes observed are dramatic enough that direct black and white photography is adequate. In photoelastic stress analysis, several orders of interference fringes may be produced and it is frequently desirable to suppress the color effects (use monochromatic light) to simplify interpretation. On the other hand, relatively minute color variations may be readily detectable by eye, be of considerable assistance in interpreting a structure, and yet be enormously difficult to reduce to an unambiguous black and white print. In order to illustrate a possible compromise or solution to the above problems, we wish to show three black and white photographs of the same region of an Nb/Sn diffusion couple whose interpretation depends heavily upon use of color techniques. These micro-structures were obtained from a section through a rod consisting of commercial-purity niobium tubing filled with 99.995 pct Sn (melt-filled in 10"6 Torr vacuum). The composite rod, measuring 500 mm long, was bent into a hairpin shape and inserted into water-cooled copper grips in a vacuum high-temperature furnace. The rod was outgassed for 2 hr at a furnace temperature of 800°C and was further heated by self-resistance using a 2.2-kva ac power supply. The rod was raised to 1910°C over a 4+-hr period, held for 15 min, slow-cooled to 1500°C over a -hr period, and free-cooled to room temperature (all temperatures were measured with W5Re/W26Re thermocouple). Throughout the heat treatment the ambient pressure was kept below 8 x lo-' Torr. Metallographic preparation of the sample was completely conventional except that it was necessary to extend the grinding steps to remove damage in the brittle NbsSn phase introduced by sectioning. No satisfactory chemical or electrochemical etch has been found for these diffusion couples; of those which have been tried, any that attack the niobium-rich phases at all attack the tin-rich phases disastrously. However, the final polishing steps did produce a slight relief effect and this, coupled with anodizing, yielded excellent clarity in the microstructures for direct observation. The anodizing voltage was chosen to give maximum change in color per unit change in composition. In this case, indeed normally, this maximum sensitivity occurred in the blue-to-red color range. The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. Uranium has been mined in Namibia since the 1970s. The worldwide increasing need for energy in the early 2000s has led to the development and opening of a second uranium mine in 2007 and has triggered an increased interest in uranium exploration, often referred to as “the Namibian Uranium Rush.” In all, four mining licenses have been granted by the Namibian Government, which currently has two mines in operation, a third undertaking trial mining and the fourth in project finance negotiations. In addition, highly intensive prospecting activities at additional deposits are at an advanced stage. The finalization of the strategic environmental impact assessment (SEA) on uranium mining in 2010, the first of its kind and scale in the world, has enabled the Namibian government to assess this uranium rush and its tremendous legal, socioeconomic and environmental impacts and to prepare for the different future scenarios conceivable when this article was written in 2011, including both a skyrocketing and a complete breakdown of demand scenario. The Fukushima disaster and plans of the Namibian government to significantly increase royalties and company taxes in 2011 have threatened the market situation, forcing investors to reevaluate Namibian uranium mining projects. However, with the tax and royalty increase initiative since withdrawn, most projects are back on track at this point in time.

The attention of the world is being focused on the spectacular rise of elemental sulphur production in Alberta. In the short space of a decade, production has increased from less than 10,000 long tons, in 1952, to al-most 1,000,000 long tons in 1962. Moreover, 1963 sulphur production is expected to rise by 50 per cent to approximately 1,500,000 long tons, and further increases are forecast for ensuing years. The reason for this dramatic in-crease in elemental sulphur production, particularly in the last year or two, is that Alberta elemental sulphur is recovered in association with the production of sour natural gas. When very large volumes of natural gas began moving to U.S. markets in the latter part of 1961, the resultant increase in sour gas production led to a marked increase in the production of sulphur. Consequently, Canada, mainly on the strength of sulphur produced in Alberta, will soon become the second largest producer of sulphur in the Free World

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of corporate social responsibility life-of-mine planning considers that mining activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way for the entire life of the mine (ie from exploration to decommissioning and closure). In this context, the health impacts of mining extend throughout the life of the community from worker injury and chronic exposure to communicable and non-communicable causes of illness, through to family and community health and well-being. At the inaugural Life-of-Mine conference in July 2012, the authors proposed the life-of-mine in the life-of-community (LOMLOC) matrix as a framework for understanding issues at the interface between resource extraction operations and the surrounding environment.This paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining companies with American operations in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. These corporate approaches to public health management are mapped to the LOMLOC matrix to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments. O projeto CR298 se iniciou no final do segundo semestre de 2014 quando o Coque Rate (CR) médio era de 351,0 kg/t. A meta definida foi de atingir média mensal de CR de 298 kg/t em dezembro de 2016, permitindo aumento de produção com alta taxa de injeção de carvão PCI, porém, com baixo Fuel Rate, garantindo competitividade de mercado. Sendo assim, foi desenvolvido e divulgado um novo modelo mental de operação, processo, manutenção e gestão, envolvendo toda a área de Redução, Utilidades e Aciaria. Várias premissas técnicas foram estabelecidas com um plano de ação detalhado para garantir estabilidade no processo dos altos fornos de forma a obter este resultado. A meta foi atingida antes mesmo do planejado: CR 291,3 kg/t em Maio de 2016 e em 2016 a média anual foi de 297,0 kg/t, com Fuel Rate de 484,4 kg/t.

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.

AN unusually interesting meeting devoted to the discussion of the ways and means of improving coal mining practice, through the larger use of machinery underground, was held in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building on March 11. The meeting was organized by the Materials Handling Division of the A. S. M. E. and held under the auspices of the Metropolitan Section of that Society and the National Coal Association. The New York Section of the A. I. M. E., which had been invited to participate, found itself unable to do so formally because of a conflicting date for its March meeting but informally did its part to aasure the success of the meeting. As a result of the discussion at and preceding the meeting, the National Coal Association, through Walter Barnum, chairman of its research committee, has asked the A. S. M. E. and A. I. M. E. to join the Association in a study of the present problems of the bituminous coal industry. Messrs. Harry L. Gandy, Calvin W. Rice and H. Foster Bain have been selected to act as a committee which shall develop plans for a joint program.

There are two kinds of problems concerning the elements of a population : the first is to estimate the proportion of some specific kind of element in the population, e.g. the amount of gold in a block of ground (equals population) or the proportion of mercury in a sample; the second is to estimate the length, breadth, volume, etc., of a specific kind of element, e.g. the grain size of quartz grains in a beach sand or the size, shape and arrangement of lenses of ore in an ore deposit. Given a specific objective, a bounded population, identified elements and the element characteristics of interest, it is then necessary to select a sample of the elements from the population and the problem of sampling requires a decision on how to select the sample. It is also necessary to establish, either by heuristic analysis or empirically, based on long experience, the model frequency distribution of the desired element characteristics: in general, constant-probability models are used as models, the binomial or Poisson for count data and the normal distribution for measurements (or their transformed equivalents). The objective of sampling then becomes to obtain an appropriate statistical estimate of the desired population parameter: for example, the estimators may be the mean (X) and variance (a2): these should be unbiased sufficient estimators of their corresponding parameters (u, a2, respectively). Statistical tests are performed in order to determine that the estimators are of the appropriate kind: all statistical tests are designed to test against bias of a specific kind, although they are stated as tests against randomness. Given a random sample of some population, the estimators are usually stable and adequate to solve the sampling problem. Random samples are simple to define but exceedingly difficult to achieve in practice: in selecting a sample, if every element in the population has an equal chance of occurring, then the sample is a random sample. Interaction between the arrangement of elements in a population, i.e. its structure, and the sample selection process frequently introduces bias—that is, some elements have more chance than others of appearing in the sample and, hence, the sample is not random. An algorithm for dealing pragmatically with this aspect of the sampling problem offers one way of achieving random samples and, therefore, adequate estimators. Examples of the use of this algorithm on various kinds of geological populations, in both field and laboratory, illustrate the requirements for solving sampling problems and the achievement of appropriate estimators.

THE Committee on Rock-Dusting was formed after the fall meeting of the Coal Division in Chicago in 1938. Its primary task was to study the recommended American practice for rock- dusting coal mines to prevent coal-dust explosions as approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee.
