THE value of chemical research has been so thor¬oughly demonstrated in the last few decades that the general public has become "research-conscious" to an extent which allows the advertising agent and publicity man to make use of research as a selling point in his advertising campaigns. We thus see the advertisements of concerns in the most varied industries stressing the research which is back of their products. The reason for this "research-consciousness" of the general public. is primarily that the products of research have increasingly engaged public attention and have. revolutionized our daily life. When we. reverse the flight of .time and imagine ourselves-in the century previous to our own, we find that we are .without the automobile, the radio, the improved telephone and electric light, refrigerated transportation, the airplane, X-rays, and many other things now taken for granted. A generation ago we find gloomy prophets foretelling the certain over-population .of the world within a few decades and an insufficiency of food due to lack of the fixed nitrogen which is now so plentifully ours.

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

A significantly different method of evaluating mine ground system safety is investigated. The method measures touch and step potentials around ground beds and grounded equipment resulting from a series of extremely small simulated faults. The values are then scaled for a full-scale fault. The method should be particularly useful for large ground beds and under conditions where the ground bed cannot be isolated from the rest of the ground system in order to make traditional ground bed resistance measurements. Instrumentation for making the alternative measurements is evaluated under rigorous field conditions. A step-by-step procedure is proposed for evaluating a surface mine ground system. This procedure was subject to several field tests at eastern metal/non-metal mines. The final evaluation procedure is written as a stand-alone document for use by MSHA inspectors and mine operating personnel, and is included as an appendix to the report. The authors conclude that the procedure is effective in evaluating ground system safety and recommend that it be further evaluated in the field.

EFFORT to develop fundamental quantitative information and improved technique in the production of petroleum has long been faced with difficulties of a particularly evasive nature, owing to a combination of circumstances. In the first place, petroleum comes from far below the ground, out of sight, so that information derived from indirect observations must be extrapolated to reservoir conditions. If one does not force the analogy too far, the petroleum engineer may be said to be somewhat in the position of the astronomer. The actual phenomena which he wishes to observe in detail appear at a place so deep in the earth?s crust that personal observations and direct experiments are impossible.

Using a fluidized, countercurrent multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) column previously developed by the Bureau of Mines, Bureau researchers have successfully extracted uranium from a simulated acidic in situ leach liquor that contained 150 ppm U30s? This successful demonstration of the MCIX system is reported, and the effects of varying the operating conditions on the performance of the system are also examined. Operating the MCIX system with a flow rate of 15 gpm/ft2 and an aqueous-to-resin flow ratio of 200:1, more than 90 percent of the uranium Has extracted, and a resin containing approximately 28 grams U308 per liter was produced. The absorption column used to investigate the operating variables was approximately 18 feet long with a 2-inch ID and was divided into compartments that were 1 foot long.

Having established that sodium chloride reduces the incendivity of explosives, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of sodium nitrate in reducing ignition hazards. Gallery experiments showed that sodium nitrate reduced the incendivity of certain explosives to 8 percent natural gas in air but increased their incendivity to coal dust predispersed in air. Laboratory experiments using hot jets from explosions of stoichiometric mixtures of methane-oxygen-nitrogen showed that both sodium chloride and sodium nitrate reduced the incendivity to methane, to mixtures of coal dust and methane) and to coal dust. The difference between the gallery and laboratory results with respect to coal dust is attributed to temperature-time effects.

The importance of coal as a major source of energy used by the steel industry has been increasing due to the gradual changeover from steel- making by the open hearth process to steelmaking by the basic oxygen process. Since the production of steel by the BOF process increases the demand for hot metal, there is a growing need to ensure the supply of coke required for the production of hot metal. Coal used for cokemaking has become, therefore, an increasingly important raw material for the steel industry in recent years. Our current projections indicate that coal will be the source of 71% of the total energy requirements of Inland Steel Company in 1985. As a result of the energy shortages of the last few years, various conservation programs have been initiated by the steel industry to reduce the consumption rate of fuel. The efforts to conserve energy have been successful to a great extent due to the rapid advances made in the technology of ironmaking that facilitated gradual reductions in the quantity of coke used per ton of hot metal produced in the blast furnaces. The decrease in the consumption rate of coke was made possible by the use of improved raw materials, such as iron ore pellets and fluxed agglomerates, the operation with high blast temperatures, the injection of auxiliary fuels, and the enrichment of the blast with oxygen. It is expected that additional reductions in the fuel consumption rate will be possible in the ironmaking operations of the large blast furnaces that are being equipped with facilities for proper burden distribution and for operation with higher blast temperatures at high top pressure. The purpose of this paper is to show the effects of coke quality on the production of BOF steel. The importance of coke quality will be pointed out by discussing the effects of the physical strength of coke on both the blast furnace productivity and the steelmaking operations of an integrated steel plant, such as Inland Stee1 Company.

The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). Traditional in situ fan flow test methods under accepted standards require determinations to be made of both static pressures and total pressures during testing. This is to determine the resultant velocity pressures, which are vital in the accurate determination of the final fan airflow. These crucial velocity pressure (Vp) determinations are normally determined using simple manometric instrumentation such as an electronic manometer or an inclined liquid filled manometer. There is relatively little noise or fluctuation in the static pressure determinations and they can be quite easily and accurately recorded. There is almost always considerable fluctuation in the velocity pressure determinations though due to the highly turbulent and irregular velocity profile normally found in such in situ installations. This velocity turbulence means that the recording of such data is subject to random human error as the observer tries to average such fluctuations mentally during the observation period. Worse than this, and in the extreme, the recording of such velocity pressure data could actually easily be misreported if, for some reason, persons chose to do so.The author has devised a field method using highly accurate quartz crystal logging barometers to objectively record these velocity pressures. The method eliminates the ability to either mistakenly or intentionally misreport these crucial velocity pressures and is carried out in parallel with the recognised methodology, so result comparisons can be drawn. As such, a far greater level of confidence can be achieved in the final flow performance results than using the traditional more subjective method. Further to this it is difficult and almost impossible to refute the results using this ancillary substantiation method.The accurate determination of fan flows due to the impost of the carbon tax has taken on much more significance given the financial impacts in Australia at this time. The methodology detailed herein can be applied equally for both fan flow compliance testing and the verification of mine airflow data for greenhouse gas emission evaluations.The paper utilises the results of one 24-point pitot traverse to demonstrate the various findings. These include the very wide range of velocity pressures, which were logged at most of the measuring stations. It also illustrates how the method is utilised and compares the results derived from both this method and the more subjective traditional method along with the benefits of logging the velocity pressure results during the testing process.CITATION:Rowland, J A, 2013. Background A recent development in many industries,' including the mining industry, has been ever increasing acceptance and adoption of extended (12-hour) shifts and compressed work cycles compensated by more time off work by employees between cycles. In the Western Australian mining industry development of `long-distance-commute' (LDC) coincided with adoption of 12-hour rotating shifts. Preludes to LDC were the `construction-style' rosters with two crews plus allowance for annual and sick leave relievers working the statutory 13 consecutive shifts followed by one shift off. Crews rotated day to night shift weekly or at fortnightly intervals. Average hours of 72 to 78 per week were common. The author had personal experience working these rosters in the East Pilbara of Western Australia from 1977 to 1982. Workers tolerated these rosters until a suitable combination of frustration, boredom, despair and the `Five Grand Fever' triggered them to `pull the pin' and head for relaxation in Bangkok, Manila, Nimbin, or Margaret River according to their personal tastes.

IN 1942 the outstanding characteristic of the petroleum industry was the multiplicity of war-induced distortions in virtually every segment of the business. So devastating was the success of the Nazi submarine campaign along the shores of the western Atlantic and on transoceanic routes that within six months after our entry into the war petroleum rationing was necessary in the East Coast area. The conquest of the Netherlands Indies by the Japanese three months after the opening of the war in the Pacific cut off our normal sources of rubber, and in our first year of war nationwide rationing of gasoline had to be invoked to conserve rubber-borne transportation facilities. Meanwhile the oil industry faced the imperative necessity for rapid expansion in the output of aviation gasoline and later accepted the vast responsibility for developing a new industry. synthetic rubber manufacture. Probably no other essentially peacetime industry has been forced to make so many complicated adjustments, yet its response to its wartime obligations has been nothing short of dramatic.

Abstract Canada has opened up a geological province in ?Western Canada which offers a new .stimulus to oil exploration geophysics. The problems of instrumental technique, interpretation, and logistics involved in the exploration of this new territory are presented in this paper and some of the efforts being undertaken to overcome them are discussed. The scope of this programme, its possible trend and extent, especially when viewed .against the background of the exploration effort in the United States, is touched upon. Introduction The science of earth physics was first applied to the search for oil on this continent some twenty-five years ago when torsion balance and refraction seismic methods were initiated in the Gulf Coast area of the United States. Since that time advances in the various branches of the science have been sporadic as new fields for their use opened up in the search for deep salt domes as well as less well-defined geological structures; in the application to well logging as part of the exploitation of petroleum; and in underwater surveys, aerial surveys, etc. In the present paper, attention has been concentrated only on the Western Canada plains area because of the recent remarkable growth of geophysics as an oil finding technique in this region. The other prospective oil areas of the West Coast and the Eastern Provinces of Canada are at present of minor importance, although they will undoubtedly receive increasing consideration in the future as accessibility to markets becomes a major factor and more improved geophysical and geological techniques are developed. A vast province in Canada, covering some 655,000 square miles of prospective oil territory (approximately one-half of the prospective oil area in the United States), has provided the new sphere of activity for geophysics (see Figures 1 and 2). Included in this area are immense inaccessible, uninhabited frozen regions which pose a new problem in logistics and operational techniques.

"Mine management now recognizes the value of computer-based truck-shovel dispatching in open pit mines. The key tangible benefits are substantial productivity increases with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, significant reductions in equipment required to meet production quotas. In this paper, the authors review the literature, report on efficient, optimal algorithms for haul truck dispatching in real-time, and briefly discuss methods used by various mines to evaluate productivity improvements over manual methods. The Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is funded by the Commonwealth Government, by its mining research members Ñ the Universities of Queensland and Sydney and the CSIRO1, and by its industry members Ñ BHP Coal, RioTinto R&TD, Hamersley Iron, Mining Technologies Australia, Pasminco, Shell Coal, WMC Resources, Advanced Mining Technologies, and Aberfoyle. The Centre conducts work aimed at improving the competitiveness of the Australian mining industry. The current work is focused in four areas: new mining and drilling systems, geological sensing, automation, and equipment maintenance and reliability. This paper describes much of the work in these program areas that relates to metalliferous mining.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Low-grade ores can be designated by two main classifications: (1) simple low-grade ores, and (2) complex low-grade ores. As a rule the first type has a relatively small metal content, although low- grade iron ores contain a rather high percentage of metal. As the simple type is the one that is ordinarily in mind when the term "low-grade ore" is used, the paper will be devoted mainly to ores in this general category. Cheap treatment is the prime requirement in utilizing low-grade ores of the simple type, although in some cases the value of nonmetallic by-products, such as limestone for fer- tilizer and silica for flux, allows a little more lati- tude than in the usual situation. When the costs are divided under the three headings-mining, milling, and smelting-it is apparent that the last group will not constitute an important factor as a rule because the high concentrating ratio makes the smelting cost per ton of ore fairly low.

MR. N. T. AVARD : I would like to congratulate Dr. Cameron on his presentation of some pertinent facts about the Coal Resources of Nova Scotia. There is no question but what there is something very definitely wrong about the coal mining situation in this Province. These are times when we can with profit look facts in the face and attempt to solve some riddles. Perhaps now is the time when we can bring some of these coal mining facts into the open and look them over. Co-operatively, we might evolve some helpful solutions. However, I would like, first, to make some specific reference to the Joggins coal field, not as a mining expert, but rather as an executive who has evolved some ideas after some years of practical contact with this field. Dr. Cameron states that existing operations in this area will probably continue for a few years. As a matter of fact, under normal conditions, these mines are good for another twelve years. With the installation of more powerful equipment for hoisting, pumping, and ventilation, an additional five years could be counted on. With one exception, that pretty well clears up mining from the outcrop, hitherto the only method of approach in this field. The chief reason for this present limitation is prolific 'bootlegging' operations. It is too bad that these should have been permitted to ruin a valuable coal field. Moreover, I am cold by competent authorities that this need not have been so. At one time shortly before war broke out there were 74 bootleg operations within an area of one square mile around Joggins. However, despite the fact that these operations were illegal, I could not find any means of stopping then and I believe the same conditions existed in many other coal areas in the Province. For some reason, the eyes of the law were closed. The result is that many outcrop possibilities have been permanently ruined. The exception noted in the so-called Queen seam, which has definite possibilities for approach through the outcrop. This is probably the best coal in the district.

Cyanide is reactive to copper minerals and is not suitable to extract the gold from the copper bearing ores. Ammoniacal thiosulfate is considered an excellent alternative lixiviant for leaching copper bearing gold ores. Unfortunately the results of high reagent consumption and poor gold ex-traction were found by thiosulfate leaching of synthetic gold ores containing chalcopyrite, chalcocite or bornite and a mild refractory copper-bearing sulfidic gold ore. In this investigation, several processes have been applied to reduce the impacts of these minerals on gold leaching. The process included: the pre-oxidation of copper sulphide minerals in water or ammonia solution, the reduction of dissolved oxygen in the lixiviant (0.3 ppm DO or 0.7% oxygen), adding phosphate anion in the leach or pre-leach stage, and the addition of a strong copper ligand (e.g., EDA and DETA). The results indicated that the gold extraction could be improved to 93% with the thiosulfate consumption being reduced to less than 8 kg/t. The dissolution of copper minerals was found to be the major reason for increased consumption of thiosulfate and the highly reductive leached surfaces are responsible for the reduced gold extractions.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs, which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study, evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed unidirectional powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer that brings clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This research effort provided another example of the enhancement in air quality that can be achieved in an enclosed cab from the implementation of an improved filtration system and by establishing positive pressurization from increased intake air volume and sealing the cab. This testing showed a significant reduction in respirable dust levels in the enclosed cab when comparing baseline versus post-testing results. Since dust levels were similar near the roof and floor of the cab during post-testing, the unidirectional flow pattern did not appear to significantly improve the performance over the conventional design in this study.
