THE first practical treatment of wood to prevent decay was devised early in the 19th century. At that time the oaken navy of England, when the nation was fighting for its very existence, seemed doomed to annihilation by the swift ravages of decay. The acute situation inspired a desperate search for preventive measures and resulted in the development of the Burnett, Bethel and Kyan processes for impregnating wood with zinc chloride, coal-tar creosote and mercuric chloride, respectively. In the century that has elapsed, their use has spread throughout the world and the three original preservatives are used today in enormous quantities. Meanwhile, improved processes have been developed, new preservatives discovered, and the practice of impregnating wood to make it last longer has attained a position of major importance in the field of structural materials. USE OF PRESERVATIVES BY THE RAILROADS In the application of wood preservatives in the United States the railroads have been the leaders for the past 50 years or more. Having found that decay is the chief cause of the early destruction of wood and that preservative treatment is the remedy, they have treated their ties and timber in increasing amounts(1)?-in 1925 about 220;000,000 cubic feet. By preservative treatment the Santa Fe Railroad saves annually 1,500,000 ties in its 18,000 miles of track, and many other railroads effect similar savings. (2) In like manner the life of wooden bridges and trestles,(3) poles, marine piling, water tanks and other wooden railroad structures has been greatly increased, reducing the amount of timber required annually to maintain them.(5),(7)

In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. Excessive residual stress in Al engine blocks may result in cylinder distortion which reduces engine operating efficiency. As such, neutron diffraction was used to measure residual strain along the Fe liners and Al, in the hoop, radial and axial orientations with respect to the cylinder axis, at the cylinder interbore region. Residual stresses were subsequently calculated using generalized Hooke's law and related to the microstructure along the cylinder bridge. The results suggest that the residual stresses in the Al interbore region are tensile and increased with depth in the axial direction of the cylinder. The increase in residual stress at the bottom of the cylinder coincides with a finer and more uniform microstructure in this region of the cylinder. The refinement in microstructure at the bottom of the cylinder likely increased alloy strength, thereby decreasing this section's susceptibility to distortion. This study successfully quantified the residual stress profiles in a heat treated engine block and related the stress profiles to an as-cast engine block.

"INTRODUCTION The iron—ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years.This information circular supplements, continues, and combines the data in Information Circular 7321,2/ including figures of 1944 and 1945.During the 6—year period 1940 to 1945, inclusive, 481,485,475 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 93,787,648 tons, or 19,5 percent of the total, and employed annually an average of approximately 14,300 men; Minnesota shipped 387,697,827 tons, or 80,5 percent, and employed annually an average of approximately 9,300 men. The tons produced per man employed is much greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

Forty aluminium A356 castings were poured on a Low Pressure Permanent Mould industrial machine, 500x700mm in platen size. The 152mm wide casting comprised three steps, 25mm, 13mm, 6mm in thickness and a 2.5mm overflow which allowed to assess the thin wall capability of the process. The casting campaign, which produced 40 parts, allowed to test the influence of various production parameters including the time of application of the pressure in the crucible, artificial cooling of the mould and casting rate. The thermal history in the mould was recorded over the 40 cycles, which allowed to construct a reliable thermal model of the mould/casting assembly. The metallurgical quality of castings representative of the various conditions was assessed in the 25mm, 13mm and 6mm plates. This included measuring the level of microporosity, the dendrite fineness (DAS), along with the tensile properties in the T6 condition. The radiographic quality per ASTM E155 was also determined. Modelling filling and solidification allowed to verify the validity of the predictions based on available relationships relating microporosity, secondary dendrite arm spacing (DAS) and local tensile properties (Quality Index, Q) to the local thermal solidification parameters.

"Determining the deportment of economic and environmentally significant elements in sulfidic mine materials (eg ore, gangue and waste) requires the use of advanced microanalytical techniques, including electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Sulfidic boulders were sampled from an acid rock drainage impacted ephemeral stream adjacent to historical copper-silver workings at Baal Gammon, northern Queensland. The abundance and deportment of a range of trace elements and precious metals were analysed in these samples. Whilst many of these elements represent a potential environmental risk if leached from sulfidic rocks into streams in the surficial environment, significantly some of these elements (eg In, Sb and Co) represent specialised metals that are currently considered to be in critical supply.Sulfidic waste rock material at Baal Gammon is dominated by chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Microanalytical investigations revealed that chalcopyrite contains significant quantities of In, Sn, Ag and Zn either substituted directly into the crystal lattice or occurring as discrete sphalerite and stannite inclusions. Arsenopyrite, which may comprise more than 50 per cent of some boulders, is notably enriched in Sb, Co and Ni but also contains inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stannite. In contrast, pyrrhotite contains no trace elements of economic significance, but instead represents a likely contributor to acid generation during oxidation in the surficial environment. Trace metals (eg In, Sb, Co, Ni, Zn) are liberated during sulfide oxidation of these boulders in the surficial environment, generating a metal-rich, low-pH leachate.Fe-oxides precipitated as rinds on the surface of these boulders under low pH conditions also contain abundant As, Bi, Sn, Cu and Zn. Abandoned or historical mines represent potential sources of metalliferous drainage that poses potential environmental risks to water and habitats. However, sulfide-rich historical waste rock, stockpiles and processed waste (eg tailings) at abandoned mines may also represent significant sources of critical (eg indium) or other significant metals (eg Sn) that if liberated economically could improve environmental conditions in and around abandoned and historical mines.CITATION:Fox, N, Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2016. "The rehabilitation of underground excavations has been undertaken as long as mining has existed. The conventional methods have proven to be dangerous, time consuming and expensive. During the construction of Styldrift Mine at Royal Bafokeng Platinum several vertical and horizontal excavations had to be rehabilitated. With a zero tolerance attitude towards working in unsafe conditions, together with a non-negotiable timeline to construct and ramp up the mine, the project team could not rehabilitate these excavations using conventional methods. This paper details the approach used to rehabilitate excavations using remote methods and how it was adapted to suit varying operating conditions and requirements - ensuring that no person ever entered an unsafe excavation before it was fully rehabilitated and safe. INTRODUCTION Styldrift Mine is an expansion project of the Royal Bafokeng Platinum group. It is located in South Africa in the North West Province some 10 km south of the Sun City resort (Figure 1). The mine consists of a twin shaft system (Main Shaft and Services Shaft). Capital construction of the shaft and associated infrastructure started in 2009 and is projected to be completed during 2020. The designed steady state production capacity of the shaft is 230 ktpm of Merensky ore. Production ramp-up commenced in 2017 with steady state production set to be achieved 36 months later in the fourth quarter 2020.Merensky Reef was intersected at a depth of 600 m below surface and the shaft design has a mean mining depth of 630 m. The project was approved for execution in 2008 on the basis of a suitable mine design and bankable feasibility study. One of the main excavations that required rehabilitation was an underground reef silo, Silo 4. It is a key piece of infrastructure on the critical path to allow steady state production at Styldrift Mine to be achieved. During construction excessive scaling within the silo along its 64m length necessitated urgent rehabilitation to be able to meet the ramp-up schedule. The criticality and urgency of these excavations prompted the project team to reduce the risk of failure while ensuring safe and cost-effective rehabilitation. This paper will focus on the rehabilitation of Silo 4 while capturing the essence of the learnings of all the excavations that were rehabilitated remotely."

MUCH has been said in print, and much more that was unprintable, about burdensome controls, taxation, and multiplying restrictive, regulatory, or taxing activities of the Federal Government, but not so much has been said about ways and means whereby the Government can and does render economic assistance. Economics has been defined as the study of men earning a living, and economic assistance to industry as well as to individuals properly should take the form of helping enterprisers to help themselves rather than charity. Proposals to have the Government play Santa Claus must be examined carefully if -only to avoid undue favoritism to politically important persons and downright venality by potentially crooked public officials. Thomas Jefferson is credited with the remark that the best government is the one which governs least. Paternalism is abhorrent to most Americans.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is an industrial waste from the production of phosphate fertilizer. The utilization of PG is restricted by its containing impurities, and the pretreatment is crucial to eliminating these impurities. The purpose of the research is to recycle pretreatment PG as raw material for preparation of a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (a-HH) by salt solution method. The effect of pretreatment technologies of lime neutralization and washing on dehydration rate, phase composition and morphology evolution of a-HH were investigated by crystal water content analysis, XRD and SEM. Furthermore, the change of pH in the reaction process was also discussed in detail. The results show that the dehydration rate of conversion PG to a-HH increases and the corresponding induction period, crystal growth period and total time decrease with an increase in CaO dosage from 0.2% to 0.6%. In the presence of 0.4% CaO or 0.6% CaO, the a-HH presents a long hexagon-prism-shaped crystal with a purity of 94%, and the end face of a-HH presents polyhedron. The system pH sharply decreases with the reaction time under different CaO dosage, and the pH variation from the initial alkalinity to acidity. The main reason is that as the co-crystallized phosphorus dissolved and released HPO42-, and with the pH decreasing to 4-5, HPO42- transformed into H2PO4-. The dehydration rate of washing PG is lower than that of original PG. Compared with the original PG, a-HH with the larger width and smaller aspect ratio can be achieved from the pretreatment PG subjected to lime neutralization and washing, meanwhile the crystal surface is more smooth.

"In a previous presentation at the CMP, evidence was shown for the formation of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in self-heating experiments on pyrrhotite-rich samples (Somot and Finch, 2006). Oxidation of H2S is strongly exothermic leading to the proposition that H2S is playing a key role in the self-heating process. Subsequently, tests in two weathering apparatus (I and II) were run under varying oxygen levels to further examine conditions leading to self-heating. To characterise their resulting self-heating capacity the samples from the weathering tests were subjected to a modified Stage B test using the self-heating apparatus developed by Rosenblum and co-workers (Rosenblum and Spira, 1995; Rosenblum et al., 2001). Results showed highest self-heating after weathering occurs under low oxygen conditions, supporting the H2S hypothesis. It was observed that highest heating rates are not directly related to highest weight gains of samples.INTRODUCTION“Sulphides” refer to several types of minerals containing sulphur in its lowest oxidation state of - 2. Self-heating is the spontaneous heating of a material without external heat input. It is well established that some sulphides will self-heat on exposure to moisture and oxygen (Farnsworth, 1977; Good, 1977; Rosenblum et al., 2001; Wu and Li, 2005). This process is highly exothermic and if the heat generated is not dissipated, combustion may occur when the temperature reaches the ignition point of the sulphide (typically 350-400 °C). The hazards of sulphide self-heating range from handling hot material, to sulphur dioxide release, to fires. The literature documents self-heating incidents underground, on ships and trucks transporting sulphide concentrates, and in mine waste (tailing) disposal areas (Stachulak, 1990; Lukaszewski, 1969; Headley et al., 1977). Lukaszewski (1969), Farnsworth (1977), and Good (1977) note that sulphide minerals can act as fuel to promote underground mine fires. Based on such findings, sulphide minerals could become classified as hazardous materials, making transport of concentrates and storage of mine waste subject to stricter and more costly regulation. The problem is one the industry is keen to avoid."

A integração e cruzamento de dados de diversos sistemas para as unidades técnicas de processo sempre foi uma necessidade e um desafio. Para a unidade técnica da Aciaria, a integração de dados gerados pela Instrumentação, Automação e MES (Manufacturing Execution System) é imprescindível para a análise e otimização do processo. Este processo feito de forma manual era trabalhoso, improdutivo e com grande potencial de erros. Mesmo com o suporte da área de TI (tecnologia da informação) e TA (tecnologia de automação), em alguns casos este processo era inviável devido à complexidade. Com a utilização de uma ferramenta analítica, já utilizada em outros processos produtivos da empresa (Laminação de Tiras a Quente e Qualidade), foi possível prover acesso a diferentes bases de dados, permitindo a integração dessas informações de forma simplificada, ágil e única, todos consumindo os mesmos dados, com as mesmas regras. A automatização deste processo trouxe benefícios como: melhora na qualidade do dado, democratização das informações e tempo para investigação de problemas e otimização de processo, além de menor dependência das equipes de TI e TA.

The paper point out the styles of Pacific Rim epithermal gold mineralization. Some characteristics of differing styles of epithermal gold mineralization influence investment decisions (metallurgy, metal ratios, mining style), while others should be taken into account during prospecting (pyrite content and resistivity govern geophysical techniques, vein/breccia styles control drilling, gold distribution influences ore reserve determinations). Two groups of epithermal deposits are distinguished by the fluid style which controls ore and gangue mineralogy. High sulfidation systems develop from the reaction of hot acidic magmatic fluids with host rocks to produce characteristic zoned alteration and later sulfide (dominantly enargite-pyrite) and Au-Ag-Cu deposition. Ore systems display permeably controls governed by lithology, structure and breccias, typically phreatomagmatic breccia pipes, and should be distinguished from a group of generally non-economic acidic alteration including: steam heated alteration, lithocaps or barren shoulders, acid sulfate, and magmatic solfatara alteration.

The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag, the main system formed in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser, was measured at 1873 K to understand the effect of slag compositions on the carbon contamination in the ultra-low carbon (ULC) steels. The stable form of carbon was demonstrated to be carbonate by plotting the log [(wt%C)/aC] ratio against the log p(O2) which ranged -11 < log p(O2,atm) < -9. The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be estimated using thermodynamic model. The distribution ratio of carbon increased with increasing concentration of FeO due to the FeO reduction reaction and increased basicity of slag. The carbonate capacity of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be expressed as a linear function of the activity of lime and the optical basicity.

Extraction of gold from refractory gold concentrates usually requires an oxidation step to remove arsenides、sulphides and carbonaceous matter. In this investigation, the gold concentrates were two-stage roasted under different atmospheres and temperatures. Results indicated that at the first stage, under neutral atmosphere, the removal rate of arsenic increases as the temperature rises. Under the oxidizing atmosphere, with the increase of temperature, arsenic content in the residued calcine increases, in addition, the volatilization of arsenic is also affected by the oxidation of carbon that generated CO, which is advantageous to the decomposition of arsenate decomposition. At the second stage of roasting, it is the higher temperature and stronger oxidizing atmosphere, the faster sulfur and carbon oxidated rate is, but at the same time, the calcine appears the phenomenon of consolidation because of the phase of silicate compounds generate.
