Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Buenaventura adecuó un antiguo depósito de desmontes y lodos para realizar pruebas y ensayos que incluyeron el uso de suelos mejorados, suelos artificiales, suelos construidos —conocidos como tecnosoles—, con el fin de adaptar esta tecnología, desarrollada en Canadá y España, a la realidad peruana.

Magnésio e suas ligas são promissores para armazenagem de hidrogênio devido à alta eficiência, boa reversibilidade, baixo custo e segurança. Entretanto, hidretos à base de Mg apresentam cinéticas de ab/dessorção lentas, temperaturas de operação muito altas, e alta reatividade ao ar para aplicação práticas. A moagem de alta energia (HEBM) combinada com o uso de catalisadores têm produzido nanocompósitos à base de Mg com cinéticas mais rápidas. Recentemente, processos termomecânicos e de deformação plástica severa (SPD) têm sido investigados para produzir nanocompósitos em volume com melhor resistência ao ar (processo de ativação) e que podem ser facilmente fabricados em escala industrial. No presente trabalho, amostras 2Mg-Fe foram misturadas com CNT (0-5%p.) por HEBM, e em seguida processadas por extrusão a quente (termomecânico) a 300oC e/ou laminação a frio (SPD) a temperatura ambiente. Pós com 0%p a 5%p. de CNT mostraram padrões de DRX muito similares indicando similares nanoestruturas. Todas as amostras puderam ser laminadas, mas somente amostras com menos que 2,0%p. de CNT puderam ser extrudadas, e submetidas pela combinação de extrusão-laminação. As propriedades cinéticas, medidas pelos métodos Sieverts e DSC, foram piores para as extrudadas, intermediárias para as extrudadas/laminadas e melhores para as somente laminadas. Nessas últimas, os picos de Bragg mostraram baixa intensidade e textura favorável ao longo de (002) no Mg, que possivelmente explicam esses resultados. Quanto maiores foram as quantidades de CNT melhores foram as propriedades (cinética e temperatura de dessorção).

In evaluating uncertainty, experiments are usually performed repeatedly and then conclusions are drawn from the distribution of results. With the advent of high-speed electronic computers, it is possible to perform experiments using mathematical models constructed to simulate complex experiments or operations. Statistical methods are then applied to the results of the simulated experiments. This procedure forms the busis of this paper. Demonstrated is the need for properly accounting for uncertainty in petroleum engineering problems. How uncertainty affects solutions is evaluated in three example illustrations. The method used to evaluate uncertainty in petroleum engineering studies is the Monte Carlo simulation procedure.'-" INTRODUCTION The solution to most technical problems may be derived from interrelationships among several quantities called variables or parameters. There may be only a few variables or several hundred. Interrelationships among parameters may be explicit or implicit, well established or only approximate. Some variables that fully or partially depend on the magnitude of others are called dependent variables. Input variables for most practical problems are not precisely known; there is usually an uncertainty in their value. The degree of uncertainty may vary from one variable to another. Variables that are known accurately are called determinates.' For instance, the gravity of crude obtained from a particular pool may be known precisely, and therefore is a determinate. The degree of precision with which a quantity can be determined increases as data describing the pool are accumulated during the development of the field and the producing life of the pool. The uncertainty of a parameter may result from difficulty in directly and accurately measuring the quantity. This is particularly true of the physical reservoir parameters which, at best, can only be sampled at various points, and which are subject to errors caused by presence of the borehole and borehole fluid or by changes that occur during the transfer of rock and its fluids to laboratory temperature and pressure conditions. Uncertainty may also result in attempting to predict future parameter values. This type of uncertainty is particularly evident in investment analyses involving future costs, prices, sales volumes and product demand. Uncertainty in the solution to investment problems is often called risk, and its study is called risk analysis.' Uncertainty also enters into biological and sociological analyses in which indeterminate factors are often important due to limited control of the experimental material. It is customary, in evaluating uncertainty, to perform repeated experiments and to draw conclusions from the distribution of the results of these experiments. With the advent of the high-speed electronic computer, it is possible to construct mathematical models which simulate complex experiments or operations and to perform the experiments repeatedly, utilizing the models. Statistical methods are then applied to the results of the simulated experiments This method forms the basis of the investigation reported here. PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR VARIABLES The uncertainty in the value of a variable may be indicated by a probabilistic description accomplished by expressing the quantity by a probability distribution. Many recognized probability distributions can be used to describe physical quantities. Recent studies used various types of distributions to describe core analysis data.',' However, for the examples in this paper, the uniform and triangular distributions are believed to reasonably approximate the data used (Fig. 1). The uniform distribution confines the variable between an upper and a lower limit. The variable may lie anywhere between the two limits. This distribution is used when no one range of values for a variable is more probable than any other, but information or intuitive reasoning indicates the variable will lie somewhere between the chosen limits. The triangular distribution is used for a variable when more data are available to indicate a central tendency of distribution. This allows postulating a "most likely" value to the distribution and upper and lower limits. In this case, as for the uniform distribution, the variable is not expected to assume a value less than the lower limit or greater than the upper limit. However, with improved quality of data it can be postulated that the variable will tend to assume a value close to the most likely value, and that there will be a decreasing probability for values away from the most likely value. The area under either of these probability distributions is equal to unity since it is assumed that there is a 100 percent probability that the variable will lie somewhere under the curve. An ordinate erected at any particular value of the variable divides the area under the curve into two parts: the area to the left of the ordinate represents the probability that the value of the variable will be equal to or less than the value of the variable at the position of the ordinate, and vice versa. The probability is zero that the variable will have any specific deterministic value. If two ordinates are drawn for any two values of the variable, the probability that the variables will have a value lying between these ordinates is equal to the area under the curve lying between the ordinates.

As with most rheologically defined materials, rocks react differently in different environments to similar forces. Physical changes and deformations depend as much on the rate of change of stress as the magnitude of stress. In many instances the rate of change is more important. Under load, all real materials will flow if given time. If there is no time for flow, materials tend to react in a brittle manner. Particular characteristics are developed in rocks during their periods of formation and postformative geologic history. Whatever their mode of occurrence, rocks are a record of their formation and changes. Where analyses are possible, advantage should be taken of the natural inherent characteristics to help design economical functional structures. A number of techniques of measurement and analysis have been developed. The fracturing of rock by hydraulic pressure has been examined by many authorities but few within the scope of available published literature have used the actual rocks concerned in tests to examine directional characteristics or preferred strain propagation rates and directions. In a number of investigations of the properties of rocks for mine design purposes and stress analysis problems in which the writer has been associated, it has been demonstrated that there are definable preferred shear planes in most rocks. Preferred shear planes can be identified by a photoelastic method of analysis, and the information can be used to improve design of optimum drilling and breaking directions for mining purposes. Definable principal strain directions can be determined to facilitate design directions of optimum stability for permanent mine openings. In field fracturing operations the same directional characteristics as outlined above should be used to define preferred fracturing directions as in the laboratory from oriented samples. Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized; debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is considered to be the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicated that the impounded water was due to a zonal accumulation of Jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.

As técnicas que visam aumentar a densidade de carga possibilitam elevar a produtividade da coqueria e, além disso, permitem utilizar carvões com menor poder coqueificante. O aumento de densidade pode contribuir ainda para a obtenção de um coque de melhor qualidade, o que contribui para a redução do coke rate no alto-forno. Uma alternativa para aumentar a densidade de carga é a adição de óleo na mistura de carvões, o que reduz a tensão superficial da água, permitindo uma maior aproximação entre as partículas e favorecendo o contato efetivo durante a fase plástica. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de óleo na densidade de carga para diferentes condições de granulometria e umidade do carvão empregado. Para isso foram realizados ensaios para medir a densidade de carga em três níveis de umidade (8%, 10% e 12%) e granulometria (82%, 85% e 88% < 2,83 mm). Posteriormente, foram realizados ensaios de coqueificação em escala piloto, e o coque produzido foi avaliado quanto ao DI15/150 (drum index), CRI (coke reactivity index) e CSR (coke strenght reaction). Os resultados mostraram que a adição gradativa de óleo promoveu aumento na densidade de carga enquanto a elevação da umidade do carvão e seu afinamento provocou a redução desse parâmetro. A qualidade metalúrgica do coque aumentou com a elevação da densidade de carga demostrando que essa é uma técnica com potencial de uso em plantas industriais.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else&apos;s large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one&apos;s environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user&apos;s application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user&apos;s hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. Weak demand for metals and consequent low metal prices resulted in continuation of the depressed state of US mineral exploration activity through 1983. Data collected by Resources for the Future Inc. and The Pennsylvania State University for a cooperative study on mineral exploration activity indicate that US exploration in 1983 fell by as much as 25% from 1982 levels. Precious metals remained the focus of most exploration efforts, as gold and silver prices remained attractive compared to base metals. Reports of 1983 domestic exploration and development activities in several industry journals indicates that about 85% to 90% of those projects were directed primarily at gold and silver. Gold exploration included work by several companies on Carlin- type disseminated gold deposits in Nevada, geological prospecting and drilling in the Wenatchee Gold Belt in Washington, and interest in lode and placer gold properties in California, especially by several small Canadian firms. Precious metals exploration projects were also reported in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah. There was also tome precious metal exploration activity in the eastern US. Development continued at the Ropes gold mine near Ishpeming, MI, and companies explored historic gold-producing areas in the Southeast. Some exploration for nonprecious metals took place last year. Stratabound copper-silver deposits were examined in western Montana, and US Borax continued exploring molybdenum resources in the Misty Fjords area in Alaska. Work on these projects during 1983 may have been stimulated by time limits on the availability of certain federal lands for exploration more than by projected improvements in metal markets. During 1983, several papers were published on mineral exploration strategies and the future of US exploration. David Watson of Raymond Kaiser Engineers, in a paper presented at the 1983 AMC Mining Convention, forecast increased exploration activity for gold and silver because of world economic conditions. He added that antimony, manganese, chromium, graphite, mercury, tantalum, tin, and barite are also likely targets based on their limited domestic reserve availability. He cited concern over reported subsidized mineral production by foreign producers and US regulatory and land-planning policies as retarding mineral exploration activity. Douglas Cook of Freeport Exploration Co., at the same meeting, presented a paper that showed that a 1950-75 period of vigorous exploration has been followed by a period where acquisition has replaced exploration as the predominant means of acquiring new mineral properties. At a December IIASA conference on "The Economics of Mineral Exploration," in Vienna, Austria, A. Rose and R. Eggert of The Pennsylvania State University pointed out that recent exploration decisions tend to rely more on evaluating production costs and comparing them with existing deposits, rather than on return of

The salt lake brines that lithium is extracted from have high chloride levels making the brine very corrosive to stainless steel extraction column internals. This is a significant problem in column scale-up to industrial production. Two types of corrosion-resistant ceramic internals, the hybrid ceramic internal and ceramic plate, were designed and tested under pilot conditions for future industrial application in this field. The hydrodynamic results (Yi et al. Ind Eng Chem Res 56 (4):999–1007 (2016), [1]) show that holdup of hybrid ceramic internal is higher than that of ceramic plate by around 50%, while Sauter mean diameter when using the hybrid ceramic internal is smaller than when using the ceramic plate by around 30%. This results in a larger mass transfer area, hence better mass transfer efficiency for the hybrid ceramic internal. Axial dispersion and mass transfer parameters are also examined (Yi et al. Ind Eng Chem Res 56(11):2049–3058 (2017), [2]). The results show that the column with hybrid ceramic internals has 50% lower axial dispersion coefficient and 50% higher mass transfer coefficient, leading to higher mass transfer efficiency. The transfer unit height of the column using hybrid ceramic internals can be as low as 0.2 m, showing very good efficiency. This is promising for near-future applications. Two-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been developed for the two columns with ANSYS FLUENT commercial software. CFD successfully predicts the higher holdup and lower axial dispersion coefficients for the hybrid sieve plate pulsed column as measured in the experiments, and the cause for the difference in performance has been explained with information from CFD.

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

A contained nuclear explosion is proposed to produce a chimney of broken ore well below the water table. After the chimney is filled with water and reaches hydrostatic equilibrium, oxygen, under pressure, is introduced near the bottom of the mass of broken rock. The increase in solubility of oxygen at high hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to initiate the oxidation of the primary sulfides: chalcopyrite and pyrite. The oxidation and dissolution of these sulfides produces enough heat to increase the temperature of the ore and water in the chimney as much as 1000 to 150°C. The rate of dissolution of chalcopyrite becomes so rapid under these conditions that the rate of recovery is no longer limited by the rate of chalcopyrite dissolution, but by the degree of exposure and other factors. Means of solution control and distribution of oxygen in the chimney have been examined in some detail. A calculational model utilizing experimentally determined solubility rates is utilized to estimate the temperature rise in the chimney and the rate of copper recovery as a function of initial temperature, sulfide content of ore, size of sulfide particles, and fraction of sulfide exposed to solution.

Processes involving distillation under reduced pressure were developed at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory several years ago to recover spent acid solutions generated during the manufacture of nuclear fuel for the N-Reactor at the Hanford site. Following construction and testing of a pilot-plant, the technology was licensed to Viatec Recovery Systems, Inc. for commercialization. The technology developed included specialized distillation and rectification of volatile acids, removal of water and/or volatile acid from sulfuric acid, and precipitation of salts. A key feature of the Waste Acid Detoxification and Reclamation (WADR) technology is the development and use of advanced thermoplastic and fluoropolymer materials of construction in all critical process equipment. The technology was then expanded to include crystallization to recover metal salts for possible reuse. Economic and environmental advantages of the procedures include recovery of acids for reuse, simplification or elimination of the disposal of waste solutions, and possible recovery of metals. Industries expected to benefit from such applications include galvanizing, electroplating, sand leaching and any where metals are cleaned in acid solutions. Currently a modular system has been assembled for recovery of several different spent acid solutions.

A study was undertaken to investigate the liberation behavior of coal macerals through size reduction and density separation. It was seen that the liberation of coal organic components could be achieved by size reduction, allowing selective separation of coal organic components. However, the degree of liberation is dependent on the history of coal: the extent of liberation decreased when the size of the primogeniture coal decreased. The liberation of coal macerals was analyzed by examining the Liberation Index. It was seen that although comminution produced fine particles enriched in inertinite (primarily fusinite and semifusinitie), these particles were less liberated than the coarser particles. However, the liberation of macerals increased when all the feed was ground to a finer size.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is located in one of the most remote and forbidding places in the world, 220 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle and on the bed of a vast northern lake, Lac de Gras. A single road, built out of ice and crossing frozen lakes, connects the mine with other operations and Yellowknife, the capital of the Canada&apos;s Northwest Territories. Diamonds were first discovered in the Lac de Gras region in the early 1990s, and construction of the Diavik Diamond Mine was completed in 2003. Diavik currently mines three kimberlite pipes. Open pit mining has now concluded and all three pipes are mined using underground mining methods. In early 2010, Diavik began mining and processing initial ore from its new underground mine; underground mining operations are expected to continue beyond 2020. The initial mine ventilation system was an exhausting (pull) system with fresh air supplied by a fresh air raise and a main ramp. Return air was exhausted via two raises and a secondary ramp. The system had a total flow capacity approximating 401-411 m3/s. With planned increased production and with changes in mining method, it has been proposed to change the mine ventilation system to a positive (forcing) ventilation system in order to meet projected increases in flow requirements of 566-708 m3/s. Extensive engineering work was developed in order to successfully achieve the changes in system configuration. In the proposed configuration, the main ramp is in an exhaust configuration and exhaust raises are converted to fresh air raise. A number of system implementation options were investigated and phased plans for system execution have been developed. The proposed changes to the ventilation system are substantial and involve extensive construction work. Work was commenced in 2011, each planned phase has been successfully completed to date, and system changes continue today in order to achieve complete system flow reversal and increased flow distribution. This paper details the design of the modified ventilation system and commissioning work which will allow the mine to meet its future production targets.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the causes and consequences of longwall face sloughage. Theoretical relationships were developed to evaluate mechanisms that produce slough age. From these relationships, contributory factors were identified for further analysis in field efforts. A survey identified 12 mine sites with sloughage problems, and these were investigated. From these studies, it was determined that the depth of cover and mining height are the two most significant factors causing sloughage on longwall faces. Coalbed friability and cleat orientation also were found to be significant factors in promoting sloughage. It was concluded that sloughage is primarily a problem in thicker seams or seams with friable coalbeds, and that the problem is more severe as the depth of cover increases. Sloughage also was found to increase as the rate of mining decreased. Observations indicated that face slough age can increase dust generation significantly on longwall faces. Current efforts to control dust generation from longwall sloughage are described.

The term "potash" denotes a family of minerals and compounds of potassium, containing greatly varying percentages of that element. In commercial usage, most of the potash products are used in agriculture, where they are used to furnish potassium, one of the three basic elements for plant growth; the other two being nitrogen and phosphorus. Potassium&apos;s contribution to plant life is principally as a stalk strengthener, and if soils can no longer supply this basic element, then crop failure is inevitable without nutrition supplied from fertilization. While agriculture uses some 95 per cent of the potash produced, other industries require highly refined potash, for the manufacture of soaps, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubber, insecticides, photographic film, and other products. Until the mid-nineteenth century, world agriculture had three options related to the potash content of soils: 1) crop rotation and pasturing to attempt to minimize the loss of potash in harvesting, 2) abandoning depleted and exhausted soils (part of the reason for the vast migration of populations in Europe and Asia), and 3) burning forests for the use of the ashes, and concentrating the nutritional value by boiling the ashes in large kettles, for "pot - ash". With the discovery in the mid 1800&apos;s and exploitation of potash from underground deposits in Germany, the beginning of the modern potash industry was established, but American potash requirements remained substantially dependent on German production until the 1920&apos;s, when oil drilling in the Permian Basin of New Mexico

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.
