"IntroductionThe advantages of non-stoichiometric perovskite material are highlighted in many papers[l]and many of this family of materials are well-suited to integration into microsensor devices. Among them, barium titanate is the most promising due to it's piezoelectric, pyroelectric, dielectric properties. Through modification, BaTiO3-based materials can be utilized in many kinds fields, such as surface wave probe; pholoconducting devices, field-effect transistor, permanent memory permanent storage, and ultrasonic transducerl2-3l. In this Paper, a series of BaTiO3-based polycrystals were synthesized by sol-gel processing which appears to be a very promising method for the manufacture of ceramic, because it offers significant advantages such as high purity, chemical homogeneity, controlled particle sizes of ceramics, and lower processing temperatures [4]. In a sol-gel process, alkoxides of the constituent elements show different reactivity toward water so that the preparation of multi-component homogenous system is difficult. In the experiment, inorganic salt was substituted for some of the alkoxides. Acetic acid which is employed for the solvent and catalyst, acts as donor ligand to titanium alkoxide and controls, the hydrolysis polycondensation reaction. Taking these aspects into consideration, we select the system Ba(OAc)2, , La(OAc)3, Ti(O11Bu)4 and acetic acid which is used as both solvent and homogeneous catalyst for the first time.ExperimentalA series of La3+-doped BaTiO3-based nano-crystals were prepared with sol-gel technology using various parameters. The precursor solution was prepared in the presence of barium acetate, lathanium acetate, and titanium tetrabutoxide monomer in butyl alcohol. According to the flow chart (fig. I.), Ba(OAc)2, La(OAch dissolved in the glacial acetic acid (0. lmol/40ml) in a three-neck flask were mixed with a solution of titanium tetrabutoxide monomer in butyl-alcohol(l 7ml/20ml) at room temperature and under constantly, vigorous stirring conditions. In most cases, the resultant solution was golden yellow and stable in the air. To this precursor solution, containing Ba, La, Ti in the desired ratio, water was added incrementally for hydrolysis under continuous stirring until sol was formed. After aging for more than 2 hours, sol was transformed to gel at room temperature. If heated during aging, the gel was formed in a shorter time. The wet gel was allowed to dry at 50°C for more than 10 hours. The dried gel was transparent or light yellow. In order to obtain BaTiO3-based nano-crystals, the amorphous dry gel was calcined at 600°C, 700°C, 800°C, 900°C, 1000°C respectively[5]. The ceramic humidity sensor was formed through the cold-pressed, aged, capsulated routes. The dried gels were crushed in an agate mortar and then pressed into discs of ? 1.5 X l.5mm (l.5mm diameter and l.5mm thickness), then held at about 16.5 MPa pressure for 3 min [6]. The disc was sintered at 1350°C and 1400°C for I hour respectively. During the processing, an Ag-Pt electrode was inserted in the sensor [7]. (See the flow chart.)"

Carbonatites are generally competent rock masses with rock mass rating class II rating 60–74. In spite of their competency, they tend to be affected by weak features like manganese-iron veins and/or in situ rock damage due to brecciation associated with carbonatite complexes. Rock slope failure in such hard rocks is complex since such structures within the rock mass form weak links that could potentially control slope instability. In this contribution, a numerical simulation using phase2 v 7.0 was carried out to investigate the influence of in situ rock damage on the stability of mine pit walls. The outcome reveals that, the existence of breccia in the competent rock mass has the capability to reduce the slope stability performance particularly at gentle dipping angles of emplacement in close range to the slope toe. However, as the emplacement position of breccia moves away from the pit wall, the stability performance increases at gentle dipping angle <50º. On the contrary, at the dipping angle of 50° the performance of slope reduced, and at steeper angles >50° the impact becomes negligible. Thus, from a series of analyses, mine design in brecciated rock masses, the ratio of 1:5 between the breccia distance from slope toe and pit depth should be implemented to counter its impact, and if the breccia is within or close to the pit limit, a deliberate effort must be made to mine it out.

The implementation of a process information management system (PIMS) is to provide a single online, real-time information system. This system provides a unique and completely open view for everyone, based on the key business drivers. It is structured around the three key concepts: process, maintenance and stocks. It combines numerous applications and provides accessibility to common tools and reports, through a web-based user interface, for every one from the floor operator to the General Manager. This æunique and commonÆ view displays raw, online process information that provides a quick health check of the operation at a glance, highlighting areas that require further investigation. The system is based on a hierarchical system of views, from the overview of the whole plant flow sheet to the more detailed operational shop view. It provides a synthetic view between continuous and batch operations, enabling the tracking of each batch produced. The batch view displays the critical batch components, and a comparison with each component of an ideal batch. This enables detailed analysis of each batch to identify areas of improvement. The information system will consist of an online reconciliation of stocks and flow data. This enables focus on the recovery of each process unit on a regular basis. This paper discusses the design strategy for the Process Information Management System, to ensure a unique and open view on the key business drivers is achieved and implemented successfully.

The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down production at the remaining two potlines at its Point Comfort, Texas primary aluminum smelter due to the increased costs of natural gas. Total capacity of the facility, which had been partially closed since 1976, was 185,000 tons per year representing 3.6 percent of current capacity in the United States. There were practically no price movements in March on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, with producers at 53¢ per pound and dealers, 48¢-48.5¢. BISMUTH The March selling position of U.S. producer metal was held at $3.50 per pound. In contrast, east coast dealers and traders adjusted their quotes from $2.55-$2.60 to a wider range of $2.40-$2.60.

A. H. Mokken: I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to make a contribution to Dr Muller&apos;s paper tonight. The reason for this is that, at one stage in our careers, we were associates in the same undertaking. Dr Muller, then fresh from University, with a degree in pure science, had just stepped onto the first rung of the ladder, which, it was then thought, would lead him to a career in gold extractive metallurgy. However, endowed with an enquiring mind and conscious of a lack of fundamental training in general metallurgy and engineering, he felt a need for further academic study. To meet this need and, more importantly, to meet the necessary finances, he found his opportunity in steel. Armed with a bursary, he bade farewell to gold and proceeded overseas, to the University of Sheffield, to train as a steel metallurgist. The outcome of these academic efforts, which were followed by assignments in the steel industry and a further period at Sheffield, is the man we have listened to tonight-a highly qualified metallurgist who has displayed a sound knowledge of his subject. In choosing Sheffield, Dr Muller became associated with a steelmaking centre of world renown, a centre usually credited with the first systematic production of alloy steels, as far back as the 18th century. Since that time, great advances have been made in the production of alloy steels and this is especially so in the last decade or two, when major developments in civil, mechanical, electrical, aeronautical and nuclear engineering have been made possible by the development of steels with improved properties. In spite of spectacular advances in the technology of non-ferrous alloys, plastics and other materials of construction, steel has maintained its role as a pre-eminent material for engineering use. With the gradual accumulation of data on the properties of steels, and the use of thin film electron microscopy, to study the behaviour and characteristics of such phenomena as dislocations in metals and other microstructural features, the physical metallurgist appears to be approaching the stage of an exact understanding of such phenomena as strength, ductility and brittleness-a knowledge which could lead to close control of such properties and, therefore, to the attainment of the highest goals. An interesting example, illustrating the use of fundamental principles, based on physico-metallurgical research, is the development of the maraging steels developed by Bieber at the International Nickel Company. These steels have met the extreme technological requirements of the space age by providing the material for the cases of large rockets in which qualities, such as high tensile strength, toughness, workability and weldability are most important. Attractive as they might appear to be in considerations of savings of weight, cost of erection, transport of materials and foundations, the use of high strength steels has been accompanied by special problems such as brittle fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, notch-toughness and fatigue. It has been found that high strength steels, which performed acceptably in conventional tension tests, were found to undergo failure, in a brittle manner, in service. Hydrogen embrittlement has caused spectacular failures at a fraction of the normal ultimate tensile strength, and a lack of correlation between fatigue and tensile strengths has diminished the advantages to be obtained from the use of high strength steel in some applications. A new approach to the selection of materials for engineering design has resulted from a consideration of these phenomena in which strength, as such, is no longer as significant as it was previously. Subsurface disposal of oil-field brines was practiced in Oklahoma on a limited scale as early as 1925. The technique of subsurface injection has been improved immensely and has been applied with varying success in many oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, and elsewhere. This method of disposal, however, is only one of several methods available to operators of oil-producing properties, but, in contrast with usual methods of handling brines on the surface it eliminates the damaging effect of mineralized water on fresh-water supplies, vegetation, and aquatic and other animal life. Other methods of brine disposal approved by regulatory agencies in some States include (1) impounding in impervious ponds and solar evaporation, (2) controlled diversion into surface waters, and (3) recovery of the mineral salts of the brine. In most, States where oil is produced regulatory bodies authorize the use of one or more of these methods of brine disposal. In Oklahoma, for example, the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board of the Conservation Commission has been authorized to adopt whatever methods or means may be necessary to prevent contamination by mineralization of all potable waters within the State.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). In the metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alkaline or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have successfully introduced it in the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. "Shake-flask oxidation tests were performed on Red Dog mine waste to study the initial dissolution behaviours of lead, zinc, and iron. The conditions for accelerated acid generation in terms of Eh and pH were determined. Each mineral behaved distinctly, with galena dissolving first, followed by sphalerite, then pyrite, although there was some overlap in behaviour. Iron was not detected in solution until approximately day 40 and was present at low concentrations. The experimental conditions and the theoretical model results indicated the formation of iron oxyhydroxides at low weathering times and jarosite at longer times.RÉSUMÉ Des tests d’oxydation par agitation en flacon ont été effectués sur les déchets miniers de l’exploitation Red Dog afin d’étudier les comportements initiaux de dissolution du plomb, du zinc et du fer. Les conditions entraînant la production accélérée d’acide en termes d’eH (potentiel d’oxydoréduction) et de pH (potentiel d’hydrogène) ont été déterminées. Chaque minerai se comportait différemment ; la galène a été la première à se dissoudre, suivie de la sphalérite, puis de la pyrite, mais un certain chevauchement des comportements a été observé. In the pelletizing plant of Hoogovens, Estel BV, a varying mixture of hematites and magnetites is used for the production of acid and (occasionally) fluxed pellets. Optimum results regarding productivity, quality and process control are obtained with mixtures containing 30-40 % magnetites. A decrease of the magnetite ratio or an increase of the basicity has a great influence on both productivity and heat and power consumption. Tests have been carried out to find the extent to which magnetite can be replaced by b.f. dust, mill-scale and coke breeze. Pilot plant tests show that about 80-100 % of the production loss due to a decrease in magnetite content or to the increase in basicity can be regained without damage to the quality by adding coke breeze. The amount of coke breeze should be limited tot 1,5 %; if this percen¬tage is chosen higher, the quality of the pellets deteriorates rapidly. The amount of coke breeze to be added should be about 30 % above the theoretical value, based on heat balance considerations. The results achieved by incorporating b.f. dust and mill-scale into the pelletmix were also encouraging, but as some types of mill-scale are very difficult to grind and the supply of b.f. dust is limited, the research has not been carried out extensively in this field. The pilot plant tests on replacement of magnetite by coke breeze have been followed by industrial tests, during which the breeze was added to the ore feed before the dry-grinding system.

"The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

The physico-chemical interaction between minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine and the ions most commonly present in solution, like Ca and Mg and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid was investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit (Albania). The results were confirmed by means of beneficiation tests on various types of ores, from the Kukes (Kalimash), from Bulquiza area and from the Rizo deposit (Greece). It has been demonstrated that when Na-K Oleate is used as collector chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH = 2.5 and/or 5.5 employing EDTA (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetate) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr2O3 content about 50%, at a recovery in excess of 65%.

"Recent efforts at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has led to the successful development of atmospheric and marine corrosion resistant high tensile Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars with minimum specified yield strength of 50 kg.mm-2. These rebars are increasingly being used for a wide range of end-applications, namely, concrete reinforcement structures, bridges, flyovers, dams etc. Welding is an important processing tool for each of the above applications. In view of the importance of welding, a comprehensive evaluation of the weldability properties has been carried for the two grades of steels using Submerged Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process; the most popularly used technique of welding of reinforcement bars (re bars).Implant tests were conducted to assess the cold cracking susceptibility of the steels. The static fatigue limit (SFL) value, determined for the atmospheric corrosion resistant (Cu-TMT) rebars under no preheat and no rebalcing conditions was found to be 63.8 kg mm-2, which was significantly higher than the Minimum Specified Yield Strength (MSYS) (50 kg.mm-2). This indicates adequate resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC). On the other hand, the SFL value obtained for the marine corrosion resistant rebars (Cu-Cr TMT) under no preheat, no rebaking conditions was found to be inconsistent. Repeat of the test with fully rebaked electrodes (350°C-2h) resulted in a high SFL value (60.3 kg mm-2)_The rigidity of the structure or restraint influences the susceptibility of the weld joint to cracking. The cracking tendency increases with restraint intensity (K) of an assembly. The critical restraint intensities determined for the two steels were found to be· in excess of 1680 kg/mm.mm, indicating good welding behaviour with the following welding conditions : for Cu-TMT rebars with no preheat and no rebaking and for Cu-Cr TMT rebars with no preheat and fully baked electrodes; that is under low hydrogen levels."

"The Rapid Load Testing (RLT) of foundation piles has been applied worldwide since 1984. Several International and national codes are available, such as the Japanese Code of Practice (2002), ASTM D7383-2010, German recommendation on Piling (2012) and Eurocode (2015). RLT methods like Statnamic and StatRapid are gaining popularity in Asia, Europe and North America. For checking the performance of piles, they are more economical, faster and environmentally friendly than Static Load Testing (SLT), while yielding good correlations with SLT results through an objective analysis method. To date (October 2016) hundreds of piles have been successfully tested by RLT method in Singapore. A number of these RLT tests were coupled with static load testing correlation tests, some of them with instrumentation for shaft load transferred. Examples of some correlation results for foundations installed in various geological formations in Singapore are presented in the paper. The findings from these results indicate that loading rate effects are negligible for Rapid Load Test results when foundations are socketed in competent non-cohesive soil layers and derive most of their capacity from these soil layers.INTRODUCTIONRapid Load Testing (RLT), by which a quasi-static load is applied to a foundation pile, is used increasingly as an alternative to Static Load Testing (SLT) for cast in-situ piles, such as drilled shafts or bored piles. It is recognized nowadays that the determination of the pile capacity with Dynamic Load Testing (DLT) through signal matching techniques such as CAPWAP, TNOWAVE and AllWave-DLT, yield a wide spread of results for cast in-situ piles (Stahlmann et. al, 2012), making it practically very difficult, if not impossible to calibrate the DLT results with SLT results. This spread is due to the empirical and subjective assumptions that are used to interpret the test data, especially for cast insitu piles (Holeyman et al. 2001, Viana da Fonseca in 2008, Herten et al, 2013). This is further complicated by the inhomogeneity of the concrete and variable cross-sections over the pile length for the cast in-situ piles."

The NorthMet deposit of PolyMet Mining contains a large reserve of copper-nickel-cobaltprecious metal mineralization. Historically it has been difficult to recover separate copper and nickel concentrates of a quality broadly acceptable to custom smelters using conventional mineral processing techniques. Recently, improved flotation methods have made it possible to produce separate and saleable concentrates which will be produced during initial startup of the NorthMet deposit and construction of the PLATSOL TM hydrometallurgical plant. After the initial transition period, it is planned that production of a bulk flotation concentrate will be followed by PLATSOL TM hydrometallurgical treatment to produce copper, nickel/cobalt and precious metal products. The PLATSOL TM process uses chloride-assisted total pressure oxidation treatment of a bulk concentrate to digest the base and precious metal content of the bulk concentrate into an autoclave solution. Following solid-liquid separation, the solution is then treated sequentially for precious metal recovery by reductive precipitation, copper solvent extraction and electro winning and finally, nickel and cobalt recovery by precipitation. During the pilot plant testing of the PLA TSOUM process for NorthMct bulk concentrate treatment, two variations on nickel and cobalt recovery were tested including mixed hydroxide precipitation with magnesia and separate nickel and cobalt hydroxide precipitation following solvent extraction separation with Cyanex 272. Este trabalho teve como finalidade aumentar o índice de rendimento metálico no processo de laminação à quente de aços longos no Laminador Demag, visando reduzir as perdas metálicas com maiores impactos no processo, com foco nas barras laminadas por barras perdidas. Mediante ao cenário atual da economia brasileira, o índice do rendimento metálico no processo de laminação representa um dos maiores impacto no custo de transformação do produto acabado. Para isso dividiu se o trabalho em duas fases, com aplicação da metodologia Seis Sigmas, que consiste em atuar nos problemas de forma ordenada, através da matriz de esforço x impacto. Seis sigmas é um mecanismo utilizado em melhorias de processos em geral, como forte característica identifica os parâmetros mais relevantes e influentes na geração de perdas metálicas no processo de laminação, no qual nos norteou a elaborar um plano de ação de forma sólida, ou seja, ações com menor esforço e maior impacto com foco nas causas fundamentais. Com a implementação do plano de ação, houve um aumento de 0,72% no índice do rendimento metálico para uma produção 178kt no ano 2015, com crescente melhora na performance das barras laminadas dos produtos do laminador Demag.

O tema excesso de peso em veículos de carga está se tornando cada vez mais comum nos principais fóruns logísticos entre as usinas siderúrgicas embarcadoras de grandes volumes no Brasil. O aumento das autuações em todo território nacional e a consequente aplicação de multas, está gerando custos extras aos embarcadores e problemas junto ao Ministério Público pelos danos causados as estradas. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar as melhorias propostas e obtidas no processo de expedição de produtos acabados da empresa Vallourec Soluções Tubulares, no que tange a redução de multas recebidas por excesso de peso no eixo dos veículos que realizam o escoamento dos produtos acabados, aplicando ações simples de padronização, controle e redefinição de fluxos. A empresa optou por contratar uma consultoria especializada no assunto, gerando um diagnóstico dos principais problemas e, através da criação de um Grupo de Melhoria Continua (GMC), baseado nos conceitos do PDCA, organizou e implantou as principais ações de bloqueio às não conformidades detectadas.

A evolução internacional do mercado de alumínio requer capacidade das empresas de atender uma demanda crescente e para isso se faz necessária uma gestão logística eficiente. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o fluxo de veículos em uma fábrica de processamento de alumínio através da simulação dinâmica de processos e tecnologia de modelagem. Com isto, propõe-se avaliar a gestão de recursos (equipamentos e operadores), capacidade de estoques, fluxos internos e movimentações de carga na fábrica; assim, pode-se avaliar a necessidade de novos investimentos nestes quesitos. A análise envolve o cenário atual bem como a demanda futura projetada com o acréscimo de um modal logístico anexo à fábrica, que aumentará o fluxo de produtos na empresa. Em síntese, este artigo relaciona-se com os temas: logística, modelagem matemática de processos e melhorias em produtividade.
