Submerged arc furnaces and electric smelters are applied in numerous metal and slag production lines. Particularly in ferroalloy and non-ferrous metal production, like silicon metal, platinum group metals, calcium carbide, and copper, the units are an essential part of the production technology. Most of these electric furnaces are considered to be highly energy-intensive units. The high level of required electrical power is defined by the process. SMS developed several measures to reduce the overall electrical energy consumption of these metal production lines. In particular, the following measures contributes to a lower energy consumption: improved electrical efficiency with intelligent design and application of components, minimizing the heat losses from the furnaces with a balanced cooling/refractory systems, minimization of process steps (such as elimination of agglomeration), recovery of energy, process optimization (resulting in higher metal yield) and the achievement of higher recovery rates, enlarging furnace capacity to reduce heat losses, and maximizing the power-on time. This paper gives an overview of the above-mentioned solutions.

Ion exchange resins may in the future displace activated carbon in gold plants where cyanidation is practiced. Recently patented technology based on interpenetrated polyurethane polymers shows that these new materials offer significantly improved loading kinetics over both activated carbon and commercially available ion exchange resins. These polymers are not restricted either in particle size or in density and therefore offer the gold industry the potential for a further technological advancement.

Three distinct processes take place during the conversion of iron ore to steel. First: the raw ore is reduced to metallic iron in the blast furnace and during this reduction certain constituents are dissolved in the iron, either through the solution of a solid into a liquid phase, as in the case of carbon, or by reduction of an oxide existing in the slag to the metallic element of that oxide, with subsequent solution of the metallic element in the iron. Thus by the process of solution and reduction, a pig iron results which contains about 4 per cent carbon, 1 per cent silicon, 1 to 2 per cent manganese, 0.1 to 0.4 per cent phosphorus, and 0.03 to 0.10 per cent sulfur. To obtain a sufficient yield of iron from the ore it is necessary that the reducing process be carried as far as possible, with the result that the impurities mentioned accompany the reduced iron. Second: to convert this iron into steel it is necessary to oxidize a part of the iron in eliminating the impurities to the extent desired for the particular product being made. In eliminating these impurities by oxidation a certain amount of iron oxide (FeO) dissolves in the steel. This dissolved FeO reacts with the metalloids, except sulfur, and to eliminate them to the desired extent it is necessary to leave a considerable amount of FeO in the metal. The reaction of iron oxide with silicon, manganese, and phosphorus results in the formation of the oxides of these elements. The oxides enter the slag and the extent of elimination of the elements depends on certain equilibria between the slag and the metal. The reaction of FeO with carbon results in the formation of the gases CO and CO, which, after saturating the metal, pass into the furnace gases. Third: after the iron has been purified to the desired extent as far as the elements listed are concerned, it is necessary to deoxidize the bath to remove the FeO, which is the vital factor in gas formation as the steel solidifies.

Mining is inherently a risk-based business and risk governance is an integral part of corporate assurance and business decision-making. Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are the key assets for a minerals company and senior management/company boards require assurance regarding the likely accuracy of estimated and reported technical information. Reviews and audits improve the level of assurance in the reliability of estimated short-term (grade control) estimates, reconciliation, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves.Peer reviews and audits contribute not only to governance processes, but also provide valuable technical improvement opportunities, as well as mentoring and professional development guidance to those whose work is being reviewed. Technical review is particularly crucial at a time in the industry when companies are running lean or perhaps inexperienced teams, with limited technical or management oversight.Despite both industry guidance and some companies’ standards expecting or requiring reviews and/or audits of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve generation and reporting processes, it is surprising how infrequently or ineffectively these are actually carried out. Examples of governance systems are presented, which include appropriate peer review processes that if effectively applied, can identify shortcomings in technical processes and provide timely correction to prevent, or mitigate against, erroneous outcomes.Peer reviews are ideally carried out concurrently with the preparation of data, selection of estimation procedures and validation of outputs from Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation prior to the handover of results between disciplines, or the final reporting of results. Audits, on the other hand, are generally retrospective reviews by independent and/or external reviewers who rate the risks inherent with an already completed process, identifying opportunities for improvements in the future.This paper outlines the main components of peer reviews and audits, discussing how a combination of these can provide a structured and objective assurance system leading to systematic and disciplined processes to improve the effectiveness of, and confidence in, grade control, reconciliation, Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve risk management, and support good governance.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2017. "Des quartzites trés pars ont été découverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix.On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an mains deux domaines géologique différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le do¬maine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à, grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe métasédimentaires, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite.La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confére des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation.Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent.L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. The paper describes the development of the 'Magnadet' Electric Detonator and 'Magna' Primer and the field experience to date. It also indicates those areas where further work is being carried out on modification of the basic designs to meet specific application requirements.

The management of mine tailings poses a complex range of potential risks, including physical risks, such as the risk of catastrophic failure of a tailings facility and chemical risks such as the risk of long-term leaching of contaminants into the downstream environment. If these risks materialize, they can lead to a wide range of impacts on people and the environment, including human fatalities and severe impacts on downstream ecosystems, and the costs of recovery borne by industry, communities, governments, and society as a whole can be immense. Tailings facility failures in Canada (2014), Brazil (2015 and 2019), South Africa (2022), and in other locations around the world underscore how high the stakes are when mines produce and manage tailings (WISE Uranium Project 2019). Understandably, many people do not trust the mining industry to manage tailings responsibly. As an industry, it is our responsibility to manage tailings in a manner that is responsible and strives to minimize harm associated with tailings management, including effectively managing both the physical and chemical risks associated with tailings. Standards have an important role to play in responsible tailings management by setting expectations for standards of care and providing a means to measure and report on performance. In jurisdictions with strong legal requirements for tailings management, standards play a complementary role, pushing performance improvements in areas that may be difficult or impossible to address in legal requirements. In jurisdictions where legal requirements are lagging, standards may represent the de facto leading practice and may be the primary tool to help ensure responsible tailings management. Implementation of standards can help companies demonstrate that tailings are being responsibly managed and help build trust and credibility. Most importantly though, standards are important tools to help ensure that the risks associated with tailings are reduced, and that remaining risks are effectively managed. However, we must recognize that conformance with standards can have a down-side – the proverbial two-edged sword. Having standards is vital but there is a risk that implementing standards becomes a “box checking” exercise, with ongoing conformance leading to complacency. We must not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that, just because we are complying with applicable standards and laws, we are therefore doing our best, and that “it can’t happen to us.” In addition, if conformance becomes the goal and the standard does not have mechanisms to drive continual improvement, then once the standard is met, there may be no incentive to improve. The point of complying with standards is not to pass the test. The point is to manage tailings responsibly, prevent catastrophic failures, and minimize harm. The point is to do better, because we must do better. To do that, we need to strive not for conformance, but for excellence in tailings management, driven by continual improvement and a quest to do better.

Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

Rockburst is a highly destructive geological hazard that can cause casualties and equipment damage. To achieve highaccuracy discrimination of rockburst intensity, this article proposes an improved model that addresses the inefficient maximum membership principle used in traditional rockburst fuzzy evaluation models. The stress coefficient σθ/σc, brittleness coefficient σc/σt, and elastic deformation energy index Wet are selected as evaluation indicators for rockburst classification. Subjective and objective weights are obtained using the Delphi method and entropy weight method (EWM). Three types of membership function distribution forms are then used to obtain the membership degrees of each indicator to rockburst grades: trapezoidal membership function (TMF), normal membership function (NMF), and quadratic parabolic membership function (QPMF). Finally, six traditional models and six improved models are established using the maximum membership principle (MMP) and weighted average-maximum membership principle combination evaluation principle (WMP), respectively. Based on the analysis of 100 sets of rockburst field data, the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score of the improved evaluation model are increased by 11.3%, 0.097, 0.068, and 0.089, respectively, compared to the traditional model. The Delphi-NMF-WMP model is selected as the best model, with four performance indices reaching 97.0%, 0.979, 0.979, and 0.978. The best model is applied to evaluate the rockburst intensity of the Cangling Tunnel, Dongguashan Copper Mine, and Jiangbian Hydropower Station Diversion Tunnel, with evaluation results consistent with the actual situation, demonstrating the reliability and scientificity of the model.

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

Removal of heavy metals from industrial process streams is becoming increasingly important for _the recovery and reuse of values in process tails. Technology has been available for several years which removes heavy metals, from dilute (0.1-3.0 g/L) streams, as hydroxide or hydrated oxide sludges, allowing discharge of washed cakes with up to 60% solids. This paper reports on improvements to this technology which now allows treatment of streams with metal concentrations in excess of 60 g/L while eliminating the need for thickeners. Streams containing copper, iron, aluminum, chromium, nickel, zinc, cobalt and lead have been successfully treated.

The highly competitive business environment of the international metals industry is driving demand for more cost-effective operation of steel making facilities, rolling mills, and strip processing lines. Achieving stable operation is vital if the steel industry is to produce high-quality products constantly and productively. In recent years, advances in computer processing speeds, data acquisition rates, and data storage capacity have rapidly led to greater use of the new technologies of big data, analytics, the IoT, and AI by control system designers and process engineers, and the introduction of industrial applications. The “Smart Rolling Mill” solutions for hot strip mills have been developed by our group with the goal of achieving sophisticated, state of the art, and automated operation in steel rolling mills. The various solution engines improve process stability, increase the performance of mill equipment, and provide improved process control. These solution engines are based on extensive knowledge of the rolling process and the associated control systems. Two solution engines in particular are the diagnosis systems for rolling condition and for product quality that contribute to cost-effective operation and lower yield loss. This paper focuses on the diagnosis systems for rolling condition and for product quality in hot strip mills. Advanced information technologies using big data analytics and machine learning are applied to real-time data collected from the automation system that controls operation and the rolling process. We have developed diagnosis solutions for rolling condition and product quality utilizing predictive and clustering diagnosis. Predictive diagnosis prevents serious problems by detecting changes in the state of the plant or in the rolling condition. Clustering diagnosis classifies patterns of fluctuation in product quality trend charts, providing effective tuning guidance for improving product quality. This paper describes these applications with several examples.

Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively consistent over the past five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. Longwall production currently accounts for approximately 50% of U.S. underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face ventilation system and advancement of face ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has examined several basic principles of the longwall face ventilation system, and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face air flow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels from using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the amount of face air flow and to manage face air flow to most effectively minimize face workers' dust exposure. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results, throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980's and 1990's, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.
