The application of centrifugal separation methods with the use of gravity concentrators has been assigned high priority while gold-containing minerals processing. The separation proceeds under centrifugal force resulted from the rotor spinning and wash water flow in the concentrators. The high specific gravity particles are retained at the trapping surface of the cone, and the low specific gravity particles are brought in the tailings. The centrifugal field in such concentrators (Knelson, Falcon) is generated by the rotating cone provoking the swirling of the free fed slurry flow. The author investigated the regularities of the separation process in the centrifugal gravity concentrator where a two-phase flow of the separated mineral media is under the pulsed pressure of the fluidization water and air. As a result of the study the possibility of the deeper penetration of the fine heavy fraction into the cone rings, providing the fluctuation of the fluidization water or air flow, was theoretically argued and experimentally proved. This allows the increase of the separation performance at low pulsation costs. The developed mathematical models are in close conformity with the actual process of interest and they enable the prediction of the heavy phase behavior at the isolated process stages in the concentrator. "LaModel uses a laminated overburden boundary-element model and can calculate not only seam-level stresses and displacements but also surface subsidence for thin tabular deposit such as coal seams (Heasley, 1998). Up to this point in time, the material property wizards in LaModel have primarily been designed for calculating accurate stress distributions in single- and multipleseam situations, and for investigating and optimizing pillar sizes and layouts in relation to overburden, abutment, and multipleseam stresses. However, the critical input parameters that will give the most accurate seam-level stress distribution do not necessarily produce the best surface subsidence prediction. The objective of this paper is to develop a methodology for calibrating the critical input parameters in LaModel to optimize surface subsidence prediction.For optimum surface subsidence prediction, it was found that the gob convergence (as defined by the final gob modulus) and the overburden stiffness (as defined by the lamination thickness) were the two most critical parameters that needed to be calibrated (Heasley, 2016). By calibrating numerous panels with various widths and depths, a formula that provides the optimum final gob modulus to use for subsidence prediction was developed. Also, three different empirical formulas for optimizing the lamination thickness as a function of overburden depth and/or the panel width to- depth ratio were determined for the three cases: supercritical panels, and subcritical panels with and without offsets. Further, if the user has measured data for subsidence factor and angle-of draw, the optimum final gob modulus and lamination thickness can be determined from the measured data. These new subsidence prediction formulas are being implemented into new material wizards in LaModel.INTRODUCTIONIn the past few decades, with the increased need for highly productive mining techniques, full extraction mining methods have been increasingly employed in the U.S. coal mining industry. These total extraction mining methods, which include both longwall mining and room-and-pillar retreat mining, normally cause immediate roof caving and the associated surface subsidence. These methods can be highly productive and cost-effective, but the associated surface subsidence can cause damage to surface structures and negatively impact the surface environment (Peng, 2008). Therefore, a reliable program for predicting the surface subsidence associated with full extraction mining is required for appropriately engineering and managing the surface subsidence impacts of full extraction mining."

Public-private partnerships (PPP) are gaining in popularity at the federal, state and local levels as the public sector seeks private capital to finance infrastructure and other projects that traditionally have been funded with public funds. In general, a PPP involves a development agreement between a public owner and a private sector concessionaire. Under the development agreement, the concessionaire is responsible for financing, designing, constructing and typically operating and maintaining the completed project for a concession period (often multi-decades in duration). The concessionaire typically enters into an agreement ? the design-build agreement ? with a design-builder to design and construct the project. The concessionaire may secure financing from banks, investors or from a combination of these and other sources (collectively the financier). While the PPP experience in the United States has been modest to date, an increasing number of projects involving tunneling or other significant subsurface work are already being delivered in the PPP mode. Public owners have significant options to address risk allocation for subsurface conditions on PPP projects. The same sound and fundamental principles of fairness in risk allocation that apply in other major subsurface projects should be applied and adopted in the PPP context

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a wide variety of columbium and tantalum alloys and to determine their suitability for use at elevated temperatures . Sixty - nine columbium and tantalum alloys were investigated . For this study , columbium was alloyed with two or more of the following : nium, tungsten , vanadium , titanium, and zirconium . Tantalum was alloyed with vanadium or hafnium, or hafnium and carbon . The fabricability was determined by an arbitrary procedure . Hardness measurements , elevated - temperature tensile properties , and oxidation- resistance studies were made . Of the alloys studied , Cb - 15 Hf - 5W, Cb - 15Hf - 5W- 10Ti , Cb - 15Hf - 10W- 10Ti , Cb - 10V - 5W, Ta - 30V , and Ta - 20 to 33Hf exhibited excellent high - temperature properties . These alloys were not only easy to fabricate , but they also had good oxidation resistance and excellent high- temperature strength .

The study of asymmetric rolling on the AA 5454 aluminium alloy plates was carried out. The plates were taken directly from the industrial hot rolled sheet. They were cold rolled on the laboratory mill with different rotation speed of the upper and the lower work roller with the strains around 33 % and 44 %. To get closer to the industrial conditions the maximal dimensions of the rolled plates for laboratory rolling mill and the special industrial lubricant were used. After deformation the plates were annealed to the soft condition. This research was focused on all possible effects of asymmetric rolling: The reduction of rolling force, the increase of strain at same set roll gap, bending of workpiece, finer microstructure, more heterogeneous textures and as a consequence of that better mechanical properties. The asymmetric rolling with favourable mechanisms in the deformation zone has created the material with the homogeneous hardness in the cross section and with lower anisotropy, which is crucial for improvement of formability properties of aluminium work hardened alloys and to get closer to properties of steels. In the presented paper the general impact and different effects of speed difference of rollers was investigated on cold rolled aluminium alloy. Obtained and analysed results explain the function of asymmetry in rolling process and the options to implement the asymmetric rolling in industrial plant.

In Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria, the copper in slag from the Flash furnace and the Converters is recovered by flotation. The scheme of slag processing is crushing, two stage grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. Till 2010 the grinding cycle in the plant was in two stages ? the first stage was AG Mill 70?23 working with a classifier and the second stage was ball mill 3.6/5.5 working with a hydrocyclone. In 2010 a new AG Mill 65x78 with hydrocyclone was put in operation in order to increase throughput of the plant. The second stage of the grinding cycle is with the same ball mill. The Old AG mill processed 55-60 t/h slag with particle size -0.071 mm 75% or over 75 t/h with particle size -0.071 mm 35-40 %. The new AG Mill was designed for throughput 105 t/h with particle size -0.071 mm over 70 %. After the start up there were some problems with the equipment ? block up of AG Mill?s grate and pumps for feeding of the hydrocyclone. For optimization of the process a lot of general tests were made. One of the main problem was a wearing of the sand nozzles. Different materials (rubber, ceramic, metallic) for the sand nozzles were tested. The openings of the grate were changed. This paper presents: ? the optimal technological parameters of the old and the new working scheme; ? how the technological parameters of the new working scheme change when the hydrocyclone works with different nozzles; ? the effect of the change of the grate openings; ? the problems with the increase of the circulating load; ? a final decisions for improvement of the grinding cycle work. Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). In 1994, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) commenced a system-wide Seismic Improvement Program to protect their facilities from catastrophic damage. A primary focus of this program has been on retrofitting the 75-year old Claremont Tunnel, which crosses the active Hayward Fault zone. A large earthquake on the Hayward Fault could generate enough right-lateral fault slip to effectively sever this important lifeline. The retrofit project involves construction of a new bypass tunnel through the Hayward Fault zone, together with systematic contact grouting and localized structural repair of the existing concrete liner. Several innovative design measures have been incorporated into the seismic retrofit design, including an oversized tunnel cross section, backfill concrete side drifts, seismic isolation of an internal structural pipe, and shear fuses in the final lining.

Being a mining company, Assarel-Medet has a significant impact upon the environmental components. In order to meet the legal requirements and the requirements stipulated by the effective permits as well as to reduce the environmental imprint throughout the years, the policy of the company to implement a number of projects to improve the environmental components quality and the environmental state in the company?s region. The projects associated with atmospheric air quality management and reduction of the impact exercised by Assarel-Medet JSC by implementing various measures to eliminate the potential sources of the impact, preventive and rehabilitation initiatives as well as organizational and administrative activities are among the most important ones. A stable improvement of atmospheric air quality in the region and minimization of the company impact upon the ground air state in the region was observed in the period from 2005 to 2012 due to the applied measures. This project is a contribution to the environmental protection, in particular to atmospheric air protection, by applying integral monitoring and modeling methods to identify the negative impact by the mining companies and plan measures to reduce and restrict it as well as to improve the quality of the environment and living area of people working and living in the impact range as an element of sustainable development.

"In 1968 J. N. Reding et al. suggested processes for fabricating composites. According to their patent, decompression atmosphere, which occurs during the reaction between magnesium and oxygen and/or nitrogen in the closed system, causes the spontaneous infiltration of melt into narrow spaces such as ceramic preforms. However, they did not report the proof of this phenomenon or the industrial manufacturing method. Therefore, this research measured the pressure change among SiC particles surrounding molten aluminum. As a result, the pressure reduction during the Mg reaction was identified. Moreover, the existence of Mg3N2, which improves the wettability between Al alloy melt and SiC particles on the interface, was observed on the surface of particles. Applying these two phenomena, a new process for the manufacturing of cast discontinuously reinforced aluminum composites (DRA) was developed. This new method is expected to produce DRA without additional pressure.IntroductionWith the increasing demands for light-weight materials in the automotive and aerospace industry in recent years, ceramic particulate reinforced aluminum matrix composites called DRA (Discontinuously Reinforced Aluminum Composite) have been receiving significant attention because of its lightness, superior abrasion resistance, high heat conductivity and low thermal expansion [1-3]. Consequently, DRA was considered for electronic parts such as heat-sinks or a base for power semiconductors, and began to be applied for automotive parts including brake drums, discs, cylinder liners, pistons and so on [4- 6]. However, high machining cost is one of the significant barriers to widespread use ofDRA. One solution to this problem is the adoption of cast DRA that can be produce to near-net shape, reducing machining cost."

High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. The treatment of ores in preparation for fatty acid flotation is characterized by a wide divergence in methods, and attempts to define "common practice", even for the same type of mineral, are usually of little value because of the numerous exceptions. Such factors as desliming, pulp density, pulp temperatures, and reagents for conditioning are successfully employed under conditions representing almost extreme opposites. More precise control of variables is necessary than with sulphydric flotation processes It appears likely that variations result from independent development of a process from the multitude of variables that characterize fatty acid flotation and the ores of non-metallic minerals. Consequently, a symposium is a suitable way of presenting a summary of pretreatment methods for fatty acid flotation processes, together with froth control practices, as they exist today.

In the past few years an awakened activity in power-plant econ- omies has resulted in a marked improvement in the equipment for generating and utilizing steam. Although the improvement in design and construction of steam-driven prime movers has been greater than that of the steam-generating equipment, the economies obtained with the more efficient engines and turbines have stimulated interest and activity in eliminating unnecessary boiler and furnace losses. Much attention has been given to the boiler room in efforts to obtain proper combustion of the coal, because of the importance of the coal item in costs of power production. As evidence of this increasing interest may be cited the record of the development within the past few years of new apparatus for the analysis of flue gases. Many new forms of apparatus have appeared, including those for the determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and carbon monoxide, and others for indicating and for recording the content of carbon dioxide only, as carbon dioxide content is usually a good indicator for the control of furnace operation. Because of the large number of steam-power plants operated by the Federal Government and the number of CO, recorders used therein the Bureau of Mines undertook to collect information regard- ing the practical application of such recorders. Articles published from time to time concerning CO, recorders have been mostly descrip- tive, giving little reliable information as to the results that could be expected from the various types of instruments in ordinary prac- tice, and most of the tests made have been of a laboratory nature. Tests of several different types of recorders were made under service and laboratory conditions in order to obtain needed information. The purpose of the Bureau of Mines in publishing the results is to show the factors which may affect the accuracy of a CO, recorder and the manner in which a recorder should be tested. Readers should note that the remarks on different recorders apply to the instruments tested and not to later instruments of the same makers. In the course of the tests the following details were determined: 1. The lag in recording changes of composition of a flowing gas. 2. The accuracy of each type of recorder.

Online analysis of continuous and batch processes has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, with examples ranging from petrochemicals to pharmaceuticals, to industrial biotechnology and food and drink. The particularly challenging environment of alumina processing has meant that instrumentation needs specific features and characteristics to be truly suitable, features such as: robustness, resistance to caustic conditions both in the analyte and the ambient environment, and reliability for long-term continuous use. Here we present the development of a novel FTIR spectrometer that achieves these requirements through the use of a static optics arrangement of mirrors, and stable diamond-tipped light-pipe probe. Firstly we give a very brief explanation of spectroscopic analysis, and the difference between FTIR and other infrared methodologies. Next we outline the novel arrangement of mirrors required to produce an interferogram without moving mirrors, and compare the benefits and drawbacks of this approach instead of conventional designs. We then share the results of laboratory analysis of synthetic Bayer liquors, with detection limits for aluminium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and various sodium salts of organic acids. We then share the results of analysis on production samples, both in idealised laboratory conditions and then online in the process itself. Lastly we present work on in situ ultrasonic descaling solutions to avoid scale build-up and provide continuous cleaning of the probe – preventing the need for probe removal and manual cleaning.

"In recent years, the recycling magnesium metallurgy has developed new types of alloys, some of which exhibiting special electrochemical characteristics. Their application has found a fertile field in the energy conversion technologies. The paper introduces some technologic data on the recycling of aeronautical parts and scrap materials generated from the disassembling of magnesium alloy components, attempting to also solve the recycling of magnesium painted parts. The approach is meant to establish a superior quality method for recycling discarded parts or the excess of re-melting material in order to reduce environmental impact and costs. Magnesium-base alloys used as anodic materials are characterized by a high uniformity of the structural properties as well as by superior electrochemical performances, as compared to the ""classically"" used materials: Zn, Pb, etc. In nonconventional applications of magnesium alloys used as sacrificial anodes working in seawater, special alloying elements contribute to improving anodic processes. The influence of these alloying elements on magnesium sacrificial anodes was studied. It was found that the use of recycled materials in anode manufacture could reduce the Mg alloy cost by as much as up to 75% of the cost for virgin material, including the costs for the entire sequence of collection and transportation from a molding factory to a refinery, re-melting and composition adjustment.1. IntroductionMagnesium alloys are valuable materials because they exhibit low density, good forming and machining qualities, particular electrochemical properties and have a high recycling potential. There exists a false idea about the high costs of the use of magnesium alloys, partly justified by the lack of secondary materials suppliers and the insufficient knowhow in the diverse user industries to provide for an efficient substitution of conventional magnesium alloys for multipurpose applications. These circumstances have lately spurred the magnesium industry to develop new alloys and coatings and to improve processing techniques [1]. As a result, magnesium supply has greatly expanded and so have the research and development efforts to achieve complete recycling of Mg alloys.In consumer markets, magnesium is frequently selected because it helps reduce enery consumption. For example, an equal volume part made of magnesium is 23% the weight of a steel part and 64% the weight of an aluminium part."

Many mining wastes, especially those from the metal mining industry, have traditionally been treated as a matter of little or no value and in practice a cost burden. Some wastes, due to their reactivity characteristics, have emergent values that go beyond purely economic and into the environmentally beneficial realm. This paper discusses the changing paradigm of mine waste management. Such fundamental parameters such as cut off grade, and strip ratio, are positively impacted by the revaluation of waste rock material. Mine rock waste can now be seen as a commodity of value, similar to the underlying ore being mined and influences the economic performance of suitable projects. This valuable material can be used for industrial purposes including acid neutralization as well as the capture and long-term disposal of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The Turnagain Nickel project, located in northern British Columbia serves as an example of how waste rock material can become an important matrix for carbon capture and sequestration and can benefit economically from it. By producing material that has emergent economic value as well as carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, the sequestration matrix producer is a beneficiary of new carbon credits that have a market value and is looked upon favourably by regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

"The underground coal mining industry in the United States has recently seen the occurrences of several high profile, multi-fatality events. The explosions that occurred at the Sago Mine in 2006, the Darby Mine in 2006, and the Upper Big Branch Mine in 2010 have caused a ripple in an otherwise steadily improving safety record. These events transpired in the midst of an unprecedented level of government regulations and modern safety technologies. The recent increase in fatal events in conjunction with a minimal decline of both fatal and non-fatal injuries over the past decade may signify that current safety practices have reached a level of diminishing returns. Risk management, a safety approach that has been successfully applied in various industries including mining across the world, may provide a means to surpass the safety plateau in the U.S. RISKGATE is an Australian risk management program for mines that shows great potential for application in the U.S. However, fundamental differences between the coal mining industries in Australia and in the U.S. prevent direct implementation. This paper discusses aspects of the RISKGATE body of knowledge that require some adaptation before this program may be applied to the U.S. mining industry. These adaptations are based on differences in operating practices and governmental regulations. This discussion will focus on the three major U.S. risk areas of explosion prevention, ground control, and moving equipment."

The Pardee Chemical Feed Shaft Project involves construction of two new chemical feed shafts to improve raw water treatment capabilities at the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD) Pardee Reservoir in Valley Springs, California. The project includes construction of two 250-foot deep, 16-inch diameter stainless steel chemical feed shafts that penetrate an existing 8-foot diameter concrete lined conveyance tunnel. The design approach required the shafts be installed using top-down drilling methods and within a strict verticality tolerance (0.1%). Innovative precision drilling techniques ensured that the shafts penetrated the tunnel in their planned locations and the installed chemical feed lines would function as designed. Challenges included extremely limited access to the tunnel because of a requirement to maintain the tunnel in service during construction. This paper discusses the overall project’s design and construction approach, including unanticipated conditions that the project team faced and how these conditions were managed and overcome through collaboration between the contractor, designer, and owner.
