This report summarizes the cost of U.S, mining and milling industry compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) interim water quality guidelines for waste discharges. Applicable excerpts from Public Law 92-500 are stated and interpreted in conjunction with the guidelines being used for implementation of the law. Over 200 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers applications for discharge permits were used to develop the quality and quantity data base needed to estimate the cost to comply with EPA guidelines, Cost of three basic treatment methods were considered: Aeration, addition of lime, and sedimentation. From the process design, cost-capacity graphs were developed to consider maximum flow rate, maxi lime addition, and average flow rates. The graphical method used in this evaluation should provide a reasonable guide to the effect of waste treatment and, therefore, Public Law 92-500 and corresponding EPA guidelines on the mineral processing industry. The cost of complying with the EPA guidelines will have the effect of prompting the mining industry to minimize the production of waste water and of undertaking some additional treatment, Two case studies are presented to illustrate efforts that might be fruitful for minimizing waste water production and for treatment of combinations of acid mine drainage, mill wastes, and metallurgical process wastes when treatment is deemed necessary.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

"The new smelting process commenced operation in 1978. The pelletizing and sinter plants were replaced with slurry-fed roasters and the blast furnaces with electric furnaces. The existing converter aisle and matte handling facilities remained unchanged.Process DescriptionNickel-copper concentrate is partially roasted in two slurry-fed fluid bed roasters. After gas cleaning, the sulphur dioxide gas is transferred to the acid plant. The roaster product is conveyed to two electric furnaces for smelting to produce a waste slag and furnace matte. The slag goes to the disposal area and furnace matte containing the metal values is processed in the converters for further removal of iron and sulphur.The final matte containing about 75 per cent metal values is shipped to the refinery in Norway.The commercial smelter was designed for 2135 tonnes per day of concentrate, with an availability of 85% . Roasters and electric furnaces were sized at 117 per cent of design, or 1250 tonnes per day on each of two lines. In the explosives industry, individuals face a multitude of hazards while working in mines, quarries, and construction sites. Safety becomes an ever-present driver as companies attempt to control costs, promote quality service and products, and grow business all while ensuring employees return home safely every day. One of the most challenging hazards that threatens the goal of absolute safety is flyrock. Ensuring that a blast does not result in rock leaving the blast area, thereby creating a danger for personnel in the vicinity, can be complicated due to the multitude of factors. Shot design, geology, operational procedures/techniques, explosive products, security plans, communication methods, and drilling practices can all adversely affect the safety of individuals helping execute a blast through an increased risk of flyrock. Flyrock can also pose a major threat to the public and other non-blasting personnel in proximity. Like many other industries encountering various challenging hazards, the explosives industry has recently adopted innovative technologies to help mitigate the risk of complex hazards such as flyrock. Specific applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as drones, employed in the explosives industry can help reduce the likelihood and severity of a flyrock incident. This paper explores a case study and theories of how the integration of drone technology within blast security plans, mine planning, blast design, design auditing, and blast area clearance procedures can help to decrease the risk of a flyrock event through the provision of data and information previously unavailable. Multiple opportunities exist during a blasting operation to gather data using drone technology. It is these data-gathering opportunities that can be leveraged to be maximally equipped for the mitigation of flyrock. Better data from drones can be sourced and used in security plans and clearance measures as well as utilized during mine planning and blast design. Increases in the quality and quantity of information during these crucial steps of blasting has proven to be an effective way to increase the peace of mind for explosive end users. This peace of mind, along with design flexibility and adherence to performance, is why the integration and utilization of drone technology is key for effective flyrock risk reduction

Across the life-of-mine, water is both an essential commodity to mining, and one of the most significant hazards. In Australia, a land of drought and floods, availability of water is a critical strategic risk for mine sites and neighbouring stakeholders, with both insufficient water leading to curtailed operations and contested space, and extreme water closing operations through flooding of mine sites, transportation infrastructure and unplanned regulatory restrictions. In addition to these major strategic risks, water must be addressed in operational risk management activities in many different ways.This paper develops a set of categories for classification of water risks based on academic papers from the water in mining literature. These categories are applied to media content analysis of articles in International Longwall News (ILN) (an online coal industry news site) obtained with the search terms ‘water’, ‘rain’ and ‘flood’. Identified risks are discussed within the context of the life-of-mine. The paper uses these same categories to analyse the treatment of water risks in a new coal industry risk management body of knowledge called RISKGATE (http://www.riskgate.org, Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, The University of Queensland). The discussion of water risks in both INL and RISKGATE is compared and contrasted to pinpoint opportunities (and a roadmap) for further development of a specific RISKGATE water module for site-based operations. "Segregation of conveyor roadways is a ventilation practice that is being increasingly applied in Australia. It is largely driven by the legislated requirements in Queensland pertaining to separation of escapeways from the mine. This legal requirement was based on a recommendation from the Moura No. 2 WardenÆs Inquiry (Windridge, 1996) into the mine disaster that claimed 11 lives. The report recommended: ... the introduction of a requirement for all underground mines to have one intake airway that is completely segregated from other parallel intake airways so as to provide two separate means of egress from the mine via an intake airway.This recommendation seeks to assist mine workers in escape from a mine after a fire by providing them with an airway that is free from smoke or contaminants.The concept of an airway being æcompletely segregatedÆ is an ideal that is challenging to implement in practice when considering the effect of leakage. The practice of belt segregation is concerned with the potential for fires in the belt roadway although there are numerous other potential fire sources in underground coal mines. A review of segregation practices has been conducted applying ventilation engineering principles. Four different scenarios have been analysed with regard to the effectiveness of the segregation stoppings in preventing potential fire contaminants migrating to other parts of the mine. The results show that in some cases the benefits of segregation to a person evacuating a mine in the event of a fire range from beneficial to detrimental. This is influenced by many factors including the location of that individual in that particular mine. There is room for improvement in the design and implementation of escapeways in underground coal mines. Escapeways need to be planned and designated with regard to the potential sources of fire, pressure differentials between escapeways and the operational practicalities of maintaining the pressure differential between them.CITATION:Olsen, M, 2013. This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I -of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

Federal law mandates that all miners receive safety and health training when first entering the mining industry and at least 8 hours annually thereafter. Although the mining industry has historically relied on an experiential master-apprentice model for training new employees, the formal safety training provided to miners is generally done in a classroom, with mixed results. In a series of stakeholder meetings held by NIOSH across the West in 1997-2000, trainers identified significant gaps in materials that were available to teach new and experienced miners. They asked whether NIOSH could develop effective materials to fill these perceived gaps, as well as make training more effective for those who were required to attend, but who often refused to be attentive. Adult learning theories, social learning theories, mentoring, and storytelling were all employed in the development of a series of safety training videos that have become very popular in the mining industry. This Report of Investigations describes the theoretical frameworks that were used, the process that was developed to produce the videos, and the results of the evaluations as to whether or not they were effective in training new and experienced miners.

In April of 2000, two adults and their newborn infant, were poisoned by carbon monoxide in their home and received medical treatment at a Pennsylvania hospital. Carboxyhemoglobin levels were; child - 3 1%, father - 28Oh, and mother - 17%. Initially the furnace was blamed but after further review, blasting at a nearby coal mine was determined to be the source. All other sources of carbon monoxide were ruled out. The blasting was about 400 feet from the house. The conditions that led to the migration of gas include: the blasts were highly confined, the geologic structure contained fractures that served as conduits for the carbon monoxide to reach a hand-dug well outside the house, and the well was atmospherically connected to the basement floor drains.

ABSTRACT It is possible to adequately describe chemical reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), in industrial and mining wastewater in constructed wetlands by applying different kinetic models (e.g., halforder, second-order). Accounting for hydraulic transport of contaminants in reduction equations can also improve such description. The authors developed an explicit advection-dispersion bulk flow equation and applied it to model Cr(VI) reduction in laboratory wetland mesocosms. The results indicated that the model adequately described wetland exit Cr(VI) concentrations and Cr(VI) reduction, representing an improvement over the commonly used graphic method and potentially improving the wetland design.

Urban development in congested cities requires a better exploitation of the available surface, leading to taller structures. These buildings are usually founded on piles that have to be increased in dimension to accommodate the larger loads. Consequently, both the cost and the carbon footprint of the pile foundations rises. An alternative option is to improve pile performance by enhancing shaft capacity, which is commonly the most important factor in determining the ultimate capacity of a pile constructed in a clay soil subjected to axial load. For piles in stiff clays, such as London Clay, the soil/pile friction may be increased by profiling the side walls of a bored cast in situ pile with small discrete “impressions” such that the latter form nodules on the shaft of the concreted pile. The results from centrifuge and full scale field tests showed that the impression pile represents a viable technology to enhance the shaft capacity as they provide an increase in capacity of 40%. Alternatively, reduced length impression pile can be used. This paper explores the implications of the impression pile technology on the potential carbon saving.

"The need to reduce fresh water consumption has pushed many Chilean mining companies to utilize seawater obtained from distant locations. At the same time, increasing amounts of fine particles in copper tailings raise new operational challenges, in particular, the thickening and transport of tailings featuring significant fine fractions, which are predominantly clays. In the present paper, we study the role of salinity – using seawater and NaCl – on the flocculation efficiency of copper sulphide tailings to which kaolinite was added. To mimic the water recovery stage in thickeners, flocculation has been induced in jar tests and the corresponding aggregate size distribution has been estimated from chord length distribution data obtained using a focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) probe, at various mean turbulence intensities. Results show that for constant flocculant dosing, a measurable influence of the salt on the resulting aggregation exists. For each case, resulting optimal turbulence levels are also reported, a particularly interesting feature when comparing flocculation efficiency of the coarse and fine fraction. INTRODUCTION The concentration of copper minerals through comminution and flotation is intensive in the use of fresh water. The need to reduce the consumption of fresh water and the environmental standards associated with increasingly demanding mining operations have driven improvements in the techniques of recovering water from tailings. The challenges are even greater when required to treat minerals with high clay contents. In Chile, kaolinite is one of the most important clays to consider due to its abundance in the tailings from many operations. The most common and highest throughput unit operation in the mining industry for the recovery of water from tailings is gravity thickening, with sedimentation of fine particles assisted by flocculation. Flocculation is the process of forming aggregates by contacting the suspended particles with a flocculant. The flocculant is typically a water-soluble synthetic long-chain polymer, where copolymers of acrylamide and sodium acrylate are the most common types used in the Chilean mining industry. The aggregation mechanism includes the following key steps: (1) flocculant distribution through the suspended particles, (2) flocculant adsorption onto particle surfaces, and (3) collisions between particles leading to polymer bridging to form aggregates, but concurrently (4) breakage of aggregates becomes a factor under prolonged shear (Gregory, 1988)."

The use of strong base resins for uranium recovery is severely affected by the presence of chloride ions in solution. In areas where high-quality process water is not readily available, the use of saline water would extend the potential application for ion exchange in uranium processing. This study presents measurements of uranium uptake, using a wide range of commercially available weak base anionic exchangers, from solutions with chloride concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 22 g/L Cl. Out of 14 weak base anionic resins tested, 3 were identified that were not severely impacted by the presence of chloride and significantly outperformed a gel strong base resin typically used for uranium recovery in high-chloride environments. The uranium loading was sufficiently high for the consideration of development of the application of uranium recovery from uranium ores leached with seawater.

South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

In the present work, the influence of coagulant, polymeric flocculant structure type and mode of addition on flocculation performance and dewatering behaviour of plant mineral waste tailings of diverse mineralogy (kaolin, quartz, goethite/hematite feldspar, gibbsite, rutile, and Illite) is investigated. High molecular weight, non-ionic polyacrylamide homopolymer and anionic (acrylate) and cationic (quaternary acrylate) copolymers were used in orthokinetic flocculation of colloidal-ly-stable, aqueous dispersion of negatively charged particles. It is demonstrated that, through prudent selection and mode of addition of polymer structure types, synergistic effect between certain cationic and anionic flocculants can be readily achieved, leading to significantly improved dewaterability of the heterogeneous mineral waste tailings.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

The abstract highlights the increasing use of mobile equipment in mining and its contribution to accidents. The research analyzes injury narratives from Ghanaian surface gold mines to understand the involvement of mobile mining equipment in injuries and explore the use of injury narrative data as a human factors tool. The study identified priority human factor issues, such as operating mobile mining equipment, part removal/installation, and the operator's cabin. The use of Sankey diagrams for multivariable analysis effectively identified specific operator-centered issues that warrant further investigation for improved safety interventions.

This paper examines new copper production from waste-grade ore using Blue Planet Strategies’ DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment) technology, which aims to bridge the practical weak pregnant leach solution (PLS) processing gap in heap leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) operations by electrochemically removing metals from weak streams and generating product streams strengthened in target metals in a functional analog to SX. Weak PLS treatment was studied and used to estimate the economic and production impacts for a representative hypothetical brownfield copper heap leaching and DEMET-augmented SX/ EW operation to utilize "waste ore." Copper removal at 86% plating efficiency to below 0.1 g/L copper with power consumption of 0.55 kWh/lb copper and product strengths of over 10 g/L copper are presented. Modeling yielded approximately $2/lb total copper production and = $1/lb treatment costs with an immediate operation gross margin increase of 12% for the augmented brownfield. Potential mine life extension with an average 38% gross margin on "waste ore" augmented production at copper values of $3.25/lb was also indicated.
