Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

In broadening the utility of spectrochemical methods 9f analysis of ore samples 3,4/ a procedure employ in the total energy method, has been adapted to determination of silver in ores. Silver is the first element in group I of the periodic table to be studied in the Bureau of Mines program. Two silver lines in the spectrum, Ag X\ 3280.683 and 3382.89lR were used in the study, and the problems that had to be overcome were: (1) Influence of extraneous elements on line intensities, (2) preparation of standard curves, and (3) improvement in equipment and technique to increase accuracy. Sodium, potassium, sulfur, selenium, iron, cobalt, and nickel yielded low intensities and hence low results, particularly on the samples high in silver, but addition of 60 percent or more of lime counteracted these effects. One calibration curve must be used for samples low in silver and other for those high in silver. The chocks with fire assaying were close enough for preliminary or exploratory investigations, and the method is much more rapid.

The most serious safety problems encountered in U. S. underground coal mines today are related to the roof bolting operation. Also, roof bolting is usually the operation which limits coal production of the section. The purpose of my paper is to review some of the research, developments, and new ideas related to roof bolting. Many of these ideas have originated at. coal mines or with manufacturers. Most of the research on fundamental improvements has been funded by, and is a part of, the excellent and broad plans of the Bureau of Mines.

Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

Environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) have become a defining feature in the marketplace to differentiate preferred investments. With the sustainability commitment and reporting landscape anticipated to evolve exponentially, it is now imperative to rapidly develop the approach taken by mineral companies to adequately identify and address ESG risks and opportunities in the reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR). MRMR cannot be effectively reported as technically and financially assured and realistically executable, if ESG is not integrated into the strategy, business model, input assumptions and process that defines and drives robust MRMR public reporting. Regulatory reporting codes across the globe are presently in various stages of being updated and modified to ensure ESG factors are appropriately covered as a key part of diligent and transparent disclosure. Security exchanges are making it clear that companies must not omit ESG risks from reports to investors. This paper discusses associated challenges for MRMR reporting and suggests avenues for improvement. Key themes include: the importance of procedure rather than prescription and checklists; how ESG criteria impact Modifying Factors and determination of Reasonable Prospects for Economic Extraction (RPEE); the need for financial models to account for material ESG commitments; the uniqueness of each mineral asset; the need for education, upskilling and accreditation of both ESG experts about MRMR reporting and equally Competent Persons in ESG matters; and the need for clear and balanced reports that meet the needs of end users. (RPEE is adopted here for simplicity and consistency, recognising that some reporting codes still include ‘Eventual’ in the term (ie RPEEE). Whilst RPEE and RPEEE are subtly different the intent is to point to the process of assessing ESG factors in determining reasonable prospects.) The principles of transparency, materiality and competence remain paramount when considering the impact of ESG matters on MRMR reporting, and this necessitates an inclusive, cohesive, and integrated approach to assessing ESG issues to ensure the necessary expertise and diligence is applied.

Minerals, together with agricultural and forestry products, are the primary source of wealth produced in the United States. Although the production of minerals requires only a small fraction of the state's total land surface, as compared with either agriculture or forestry (Table 1), mining activities generally are much more disruptive to the land surface, and rehabilitation is more complex and costly. The past 10 to 15 years have witnessed a sharp increase in mineral exploration and mining, particularly coal mining, which has brought with it an increase in conflict over land use and an increase in negotiations for purposes of mineral prospecting and mining. The general increase in the production and consumption of coal and the particular increase in the percentage of coal extracted by surface mining methods coupled with a growing nationwide environmental consciousness have created increased public concern and in some cases outrage over mining activities. Although there is ample evidence to indicate that it is possible to plan for and design mining activities in such a way that they are compatible with other activities and can thus be made a part of a sequential land-use plan, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding the importance of mining as the provider of basic and essential raw materials to supply society's constantly expanding and increasing mineral needs. This lack of knowledge extends to such matters as land and mineral rights negotiations, the character of mineral deposits and minerals, mineral economics, and land-use planning.

Thermal pretreatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The effect of pretreatment using conventional and dielectric heating followed by quenching on the fracture properties of a number single and multiphase brittle materials has been investigated. The reduction in the impact fracture energies and particle strengths with and without pretreatment has been measured in precise single-particle experiments using the Ultrafast Load Cell. Variations in the fragmentation pattern caused by different pretreatments were assessed by measurements of the progeny size distributions. The differences in the effect of thermal treatment on single and multiphase materials are discussed based on the experimental results.

In the constant search for ways and means of improving the quality of coke and thus making its use at the blast-fornace more satisfactory and economical, it has become increasingly evident that the present laboratory tests do not show the full picture of a coke's value as a blast-furnace fuel. This fact was recognized by Dr. A. C. Pieldner thirty-five years ago: (Ref. 1) here is perhaps no phase of fuel technicology which has aroused more discussion or regarding which there is more difference of opinion than the properties of coke which make it most suitable for blast-furnaces and other uses." Dr. Fieldner followed this assertion with a statement to the effect that men who write on this subject today (1923) have, because of conflicting experimental evidence brought forth in recent years, far less positive opinions on the matter than did writers of some years past. One is led to wonder if these statements are not just as true now as they were when first made.

"This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. It also discusses the challenges faced by technical specialists in communicating the results of technical and valuation studies to the investment community.As investors seek to take advantage of the current stage in the investment cycle, the key challenge of the technical specialist is to effectively communicate the uncertainty in technical assumptions, risks and opportunities that drive project value.CITATION:Fairfield, P J, 2016. Technical progress in primary smelting has changed the face of the copper industry in the years since the Second World War. Much of this change has resulted from a wide acceptance of flash smelting technology. In addition, research has been directed toward devising converting processes to replace conventional Peirce-Smith converting technology. One major thrust has involved a revival of the old " ", idea of oxygen flash converting of comminuted mattes. This paper reviews the 60-year history of flash converting. Particular attention is paid to Inco's investigations into the processing of white metal containing significant amounts of nickel and, in some cases, iron. Thermodynamic analysis and laboratory experimental results are presented which throw light on the behaviour of nickel and other salient features of flash converting. The possible role of oxygen flash converting in the copper pyrometallurgy of the future is briefly discussed vis-a-vis direct production of copper.

A plan which has just been approved by President Wilson, by, the Secretary of the Navy, and the Naval Consulting Board, provides for the active cooperation of the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World with the 30,000 engineers who will soon undertake the task of making a card index survey of American industry, so that it may be prepared for national defense, if need comes. Herbert S. Houston, President of the Associated Clubs of the World comments on the plan. "Through the great power of advertising we expect-to arouse manufacturers, workingmen, businessmen, in fact the whole country, to the vital need of making industry the basic line of defense so that, if necessity arises, it can supply munitions quickly and abundantly. "This is not a war measure, but a peace measure. The militarist will support it and so will the pacifist, as well as the great body of Americans in between. So the slogan `national defense and international peace, has been adopted believing that the two causes will be best served by linking them together. "While the primary thing, of course, is service to the country, it is manifest that this work of the engineers will be of the greatest service to industry in times of peace. If industry is mobilized for defense, it will be placed on a basis of efficiency to meet the keen competition that will surely follow the present war." Howard E. Coffin, one of the leaders of the American automobile industry, in outlining the far-reaching plans of his committee, the Committee of Industrial Preparedness of the Naval Consulting Board, said: "At the outset I wish to emphasize the absolutely non-partisan nature of this work. I am not even familiar with the political affiliations of the great majority of the members of the Board or of my committee. In setting out to, mobilize the industrial resources of the United States, we are concerned only with the benefit to the nation, and to that end we have called into being an organization made up of the best technical and business brains of the country, and that organization will work along business lines with strictly business methods. I think it reasonable to say that this is a movement perhaps unique in the history of national governments, and one geared up to the highest standards of twentieth century efficiency. "It is vitally necessary that American industry be made aware of the part it must play in the national defense. Our whole conception of warfare has been changed almost overnight. Our military heads at Washington are largely, of course, graduates of the very best technical schools, have been taught the profession of fighting, and are masters of that profession. As members of the Naval Consulting Board, we are unable to tell these men how to do their work. But while these departmental heads have lived with military problems all their adult years, we on the other hand have slept and eaten and lived with the industrial problems of the country. The two questions are wholly distinct, and the masters of one cannot possibly be the masters of the other. We are confronted then with the necessity of interlocking these two vast elements of our national life into a great working organization for the national defense. It is that which we are about to do.

The drive to maximise performance, reduce maintenance times, improve safety of operation and maintenance on mining equipment while keeping both operational and capital costs down has provided good nourishment to the creative thinking of designers of skip loading facilities for hoisting systems. Early systems were as simple as manual loading which evolved into a surge bin feeding a skip through a chute finally maturing into a measuring flask discharging into a chute to feed the skip and more recently high capacity skip feed conveyors. This paper will compare the concepts of the skip loading flask and the skip loading conveyor systems over a range of winding distances and hoisted tonnages. The comparison will draw on actual installations and review operational, maintenance and safety. An order of magnitude capital cost estimate will be used to complete the financial comparison. This will enable the reader to understand the concepts and costs and assist in selecting the appropriate skip loading system.

"ABSTRACTThe wetting behavior of coal has been determined in the presence of nonyl and octyl series of nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy groups of different sizes. The wetting behavior was determined by a modified Walker technique and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wetting rate of coal varies with coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. A close relationship has been observed between the wetting rates and the short-time advancing contact angles.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants are used in many applications to improve wettability of solids. They can be used as dispersing agents [ 1 ] or dust suppressants [ 2-5 ] and to control the flotation, flocculation, filtration and flowability of particulates. This study was undertaken to study the effect of a series of nonionic surfactants on the wetting behavior of coal. Two series of surfactants, namely, ethoxylated nonyl and octyl phenols were used. The nonyl phenol series contains a linear hydrocarbon chain containing nine carbon atoms ( CH3( CH2 )8-C6H4,- ( OC2H, ) n, where n is the number of ethoxy groups) . The octyl phenol series contains a branched hydrocarbon chain containing eight carbon atoms ( ( CH3 ) 3CCH2C ( CH3)2-C6H4- ( OC2H4) n ).Initial wetting rates — modified Walker techniqueWalker et al. [ 6 ] developed a sink test to determine the wettability of coal particles. In this technique, coal particles are dropped individually onto the surface of surfactant solutions of different concentrations, and the most dilute concentration in which coal would sink ""instantaneously"" is determined. This technique is a variation of a procedure initially developed by Draves and Clarkson [ 7 to determine the effect of surfactants on wettability of cotton fibers. In this procedure commonly known as the Draves test, the concentration of a surfactant required to give a 'sink time' of 25 s is determined.Other investigators have used slight variations of the Walker method to study the wetting of fine particles [ 8-12 ] , by measuring the time for wetting a given amount of powder. There are differences in the manner in which the time of wetting is measured, however. Some investigators measure the time for the last trace of coal to disappear [ 8,11 ] whereas others determine the time for the vast majority of particles to sink [ 10 ] . Some investigators report a wetting rate [ 11 ] which is a value calculated on the basis of the time for the 'last traces of particles to sink'. The differences in choice of criterion for wetting can result in different values for wetting rates as illustrated in Fig. 1 which is based upon our measurements of the amount of powder wetted as a function of time. The procedure for wetting rate measurements is described in the next section. The technique in which time for disappearance of the 'last traces of particles' is determined gives the smallest value for the wetting rate, while the technique in which the time for wetting of the 'vast majority' of particles is determined will give intermediate rates. The terms 'last traces of particles' and 'vast majority of particles' are usually not defined explicitly and can lead to large differences in wetting rates measured by different investigators. Since our measurements show that the wetting rates for an assembly of powder decreases with time, we have used the initial wetting rates to compare the wetting behavior of coal in solutions of different surfactants."

The commercial life of a mineral product can be long, but like hitech electronic and software products that soar in sales one day to become obsolete and forgotten a few months or years, mineral products have a life cycle. They are invented, commercialized and eventually decline and disappear from commerce. Diatomite and perlite are produced from mined minerals, but almost none of the products in these industries spring from the earth in finished form. Straight calcined diatomite was invented over 100 years ago and flux calcined diatomite just a few years later. The expansion properties of perlite were discovered and first exploited about 75 years ago. Some applications for diatomite have disappeared or currently face competition from newer products. Dry cleaning was once the second-largest application for diatomite but disappeared over 30 years ago. Both the beer and wine filtration markets for diatomite face increased competition from membrane filters. A pipeline of new, proprietary products is critical to the future of the industry.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

Following a pre-feasibility study, Mount Isa Mines commenced a feasibility study on the deposit of the George Fisher Mine in May 1997. Board approval was granted in May 1998 to construct a 2.5 million tonne per annum mine and to upgrade existing concentrator and smelter facilities. The world-class George Fisher zinc-lead-silver deposit is located approximately 22 kilometres north of the city of Mount Isa, in north-west Queensland and is 2.6 kilometres north of the existing Hilton Mine. It will be a large-scale underground mine, sustaining a profitable zinc-lead-silver business in Mount Isa for at least ten years. This paper will outline the details of the mine that was developed during the feasibility and design phase. It will include a description of the mining methods, ventilation, fill, ore handling, services and infrastructure. The utilisation of existing assets and the development of innovative ideas were essential to the successful economic development of the George Fisher Mine.

Metals make modern societies function, and increasingly, various high purity precious and special metals endow sustainability-driving technologies with specific functionalities. These metals become heavily intertwined within products, complicating end-of-life treatment. To counteract the resulting downcycling and potential depletion of scarce resources, maximising both the quantities and qualities of materials recovered during primary extraction and recycling, processes should be a priority in the pursuit of sustainable circular economy. Adopting a process simulation approach; a digital twin for the life cycle of cadmium-telluride solar photovoltaic (CdTe PV) modules was created. The system comprises an integrated metallurgical production system that produces, among others, cadmium, tellurium, selenium, zinc, copper, and lead, all of which are required to manufacture PV modules. System-wide resource efficiency and environmental impacts are assessed using exergy analysis and life cycle assessment, respectively. Simulation of this large and complex product life cycle at a high level of detail allows for the evaluation of potential system-wide effects of various production, recycling and residue exchange scenarios aimed at maximising the sustainability of the entire system. It diminishes the need to make arbitrary choices about allocation methods for the distribution of environmental impacts in multipleoutput production systems. Furthermore, it demonstrates the key importance of metallurgy in achieving circular economy. Side spalling/skin failure occurs due to the high-induced stress in underground structures. In such cases, rock bolting or other support systems are being used to control the skin failure or spalling of the pillar. The nature of these support systems is passive, which acts during the deformation. These support systems restrict the displacement considerably of the side/or roof surface of the excavation. Ultimately, it improves the stability of the structure because of the increment in residual strength of rock mass. It is noted that these passive support systems give very low confinement in the range of 0–0.015 MPa at the onset of failure. As the level of confinement will be very low and dependent with progress of failure, triaxial test was not found practically suitable. Thus, an alternative procedure of testing has been proposed. In the procedure, sides of sample have been restricted little bit by using adhesive tape. It provides the limited boundness on the lateral direction (LBLD) of rock specimen. The uniaxial compression strength (UCS) test has been performed on 30 numbers of cylindrical rock specimens using the servo-controlled stiff testing machine. Specifically, two rock types (medium-coarse–grained and coarse-grained rocks) were studied in terms of stress–strain behaviour so that a full residual strength envelope for each specimen was obtained. This study reveals that the residual strength of limited confined rock specimens has been significantly increased as compared to unconfined rock for both groups of rock types. The average residual strength of LBLD specimens of fine-grained rock and medium coarse-grained rock has been increased around 12 times, and five times as compared to unconfined rock, respectively. The average peak strength of LBLD rock specimens has been increased in the range of 30.5 to 48.6% for coarse-grained rock. The results of this study have been presented in terms of peak strength, residual strength and Young’s modulus of rock, and the post-peak failure behaviour of rock specimens was also critically analysed through a stress–strain curve.
