The availability of computer resources and data management technology, together with the prudent use of scientific management concepts, has made it possible to achieve important improvements in the control of maintenance and materials activities in the mining and minerals processing organization. The introduction of minicomputers and. the greatly improved efficiency of computer systems in general have put the use of computer technology within the reach of even the smaller mining companies which probably could not have afforded them just five to ten years ago. A number of progressive companies have implemented computer-based maintenance, purchasing, and supply inventory control systems. Using modern safety stock, demand forecasting, parts reliability analysis, and other control concepts, these new systems have helped minimize production losses by reducing the frequency and severity of supply shortages and unplanned repairs. At the same time, these systems are helping to conserve scarce capital resources by better utilization of supply inventory investments, reduced expenditures for maintenance, less frequent equipment replacements due to improved maintenance reliability, and greater capacity utilization of existing facilities.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Hindered-bed separators are often used in the minerals processing industry to classify particles according to size and density. A new technology, known as the Eriez CrossFlow, was recently developed to overcome some of the limitations associated with hydraulic separators. The innovative feature of this unit is a novel feed presentation system that improves separation efficiency and capacity. In the present work, a detailed process engineering evaluation was conducted to determine the basis for the improved performance of this unit. The evaluation included controlled separation tests using well-characterized feeds, particle and liquid tracer experiments and mathematical modeling studies. Data obtained from this work show that the new separator is capable of maintaining good separation efficiencies at higher solid feed rates than traditional designs due to improved hydrodynamics in the separation zone. This paper reviews the operating principle of the Eriez CrossFlow separator, discusses the results of the tracer experiments and modeling studies and presents test data obtained from recent laboratory and plant trials. Improvement of post tap hole practices is achievable by mechanized handling of melt during the production of Ferro Chrome, resulting in higher recovery of chromium. The paper deals with modern practices adopted in the production of ferro-chrome since past two decades. The methods and practices deal with various areas : a) Improved method of operating the tap hole by selection of right quality of refractory to maintain the life of tap hole. b) Collection of melt in different types of receptacles like refractory brick lined mild steel ladles, cast steel ladles, cast iron pans being chosen for cost effective and efficient handling. c) Separation of slag and metal, casting of metal, crushing, sizing and stock piling etc. d) Slag disposal and recovery of entrapped metal. The drive behind the above development is continuous improvement, which results in higher chromium recovery and reduces loss of metal in slag by completely mechanized method so as to be at the same level with producers of ferro-chrome in other advanced countries , in the emerging global economy.

A statistically-designed experimental program has been used to study compositional and processing variables which influence the development of strength and reducibility of iron ore pellets. The effects of chemical composition and processing variables were investigated by indurating laboratory-made green pellets, of known composition, under approximately isothermal conditions in a pot- grate simulator. Some findings from a six- variable study are summarized in the form of contour diagrams and emphasize the importance of interactions between the variables. Production of strong, highly reducible pellets is possible over a considerable range of combinations of temperature and firing time. Abrasion index (AI) and cold compression strength (CCS) improve as both these variables increase, but reducibility (R) declines, so a compromise is required. When the lime level is too low to form enough slag for bonding, the AI and CCS may be inadequate. Larger additions of lime tend to improve AI and CCS, with only slight effects on R. The cross-sectional method of stope grade estimation at Cobar Mines has consistently had several shoneomings, me most imponant of which being mat stope grade is significantly overestimated in the high grade lenses.The use of mree-dimensional ore lens modelling improved the grade estimation and ore waste definition but significant overestimation still occurred in me high grade stopes, particularly those wim extremely variable grade distribution. The implementation of an indicalor kriging based method for mapping of me high grade copper mineralization has significantly improved the quality of copper grade estimates and provides a mineralisation geometry similar to that generated manually by me mine geologists. This paper presents the results of a test case study in the application of indicator kriging to the mapping of the copper grade in two stopes in the QTS North mineralisation. The results are encouraging in that they prov ide coofi rmation of the geometrical model developed by the geologists and much improved estimates of the grades of me stopes whencompared to me grade reponed from mining these stopes.

The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016. Froth flotation is the primary mineral processing separation step employed in the beneficiation of PGM ore bodies. Anglo Platinum operates a significant portion of the total installed flotation capacity in the PGM industry, which is installed at 20 operating plants across the Bushveld. PGM flotation has undergone a considerable evolution in both the capacity of flotation cells employed as well as in the circuit design configuration over the past thirty years. Certain of Anglo Platinum?s flotation circuits have been in operation for a relatively long period of time, (in some operations installed equipment dates from the 1960?s) and this allows comparative operating performance between various equipment types and circuits to be evaluated. This paper summarizes some aspects of this experience. Research trends in flotation are continuously monitored to incorporate appropriate findings into existing and future circuit designs. Continuous evaluation and monitoring of flotation performance is undertaken to identify opportunities for increasing flotation efficiencies. Mineralogical and fractional analyses of plant composites and survey samples are analysed to interrogate speciation and association data. This analysis has enabled a better understanding of priorities and opportunities for improved metallurgical performance. These opportunities are divided into three improvement areas: stability, liberation, and fines flotation. The paper discusses these, as well as the circuit design improvements required to take full advantage of the opportunities identified.

Longwall Technology has a potential of resulting in safety and productivity improvements of U.S. underground coal mining similar to those experienced by the introduction of continuous miner systems. The study presents a comprehensive national evaluation of longwall technology to assess the potential of longwalls to improve health and safety and coal productivity. The study was conducted by the authors during the spring of 1980 as part of MSHA New Technology Coordination activities and with a view to examine the factors that may limit the acceptance of longwall technology in the U.S. coal mining operations. The study points out areas where adjustments need to be made in MSHA regulations and enforcement to help Longwalls. A two-entry longwall system appears to offer a practical method of improving underground coal productivity and safety. Applying regulations that are primarily designed for room and pillar methods to longwall mining, in some instances, reduces the effectiveness and productivity benefits feasible by new technology application. Controlling dust is the single predominant problem in the design and operation of longwalls in the United States. The results of this study points out a need for a coordinated program between government and industries on dust control technologies for examining acceptable technological options to control dust in longwalls without restraining the production capability of the system.

n today's marketplace with high metals prices, many operations are faced with the challenge of improving recovery and at the same time maximizing availability. New operations under feasibility studies have the same requirements, with the additional need for ever higher capacities. Economies of scale have proved a vital competitive advantage in the game of ore dressing. Flotation is the most widely used method for extracting valuable minerals from ore - despite its mature age of 100 years. Customer demand has driven the development to increasing cell sizes, and in most cases, this has brought the advantages of both lower capital expenditure and lower operational and maintenance cost. The challenge of scale up, however, is to meet the metallurgical performance requirements in the larger volumes. The paper outlines recent trends and developments in flotation technology, and presents new solutions designed to address the needs for increased capacities as well as improved performance. Whether the goal is to improve existing operations or to scale up new equipment, computer aided tools are playing a key role in shortening the development cycle and reducing costly trial-and-error tests in full scale. Using the new tools and validation thereof will be outlined, as well as the development principles behind the new solutions. Plant results and experiences with the new developments are presented and discussed in several cases around the world.

In order to remain competitive, the search for excellence has been and will remain the only viable option facing the Mount-Wright operations. Safety and environment, process and technology as well as cost performance have been the focus points on which the operations have concentrated their efforts in order to meet and exceed our company's "Vision 2000" plan. Some of our mine's accomplishments have been a new work organization, a world class maintenance and a new collective agreement. The concentrator, maintenance and production departments have evaluated their processes and implemented various improvements in areas such as power supply, dewatering, blasting, implementation of service centers for large and small vehicles, fleet standardization, crusher, mills and silos improvements... etc. Safety and work environment for personnel have been our driving force in order to achieve this plan.

The Wark has been conducting collaborative research through the AMIRA International P260 series of projects for over 20 years. This paper reviews specific outcomes of successful technology transfer to flotation plant practice over that time. Moreover, findings of an independent audit of industry users of the research outcomes of the P260 project are reviewed. The key to successful technology transfer is the active engagement of industry personnel at all phases of the technology transfer process. Other research outcomes include the novel application of new measurement tools and methodologies which include, for example, advanced surface analysis techniques. These new tools and methodologies have been pivotal to improving our understanding of factors that limit the flotation separation of minerals at plant scale. Future potential targets for technology transfer to improve flotation plant practice are discussed.

The South African mining industry is at present planning to extract orebodies at depths of up to 4 km. To do this cost effectively and, at the same time, ensure safe working conditions for mining, the personnel will require both the development of new strategies and the implementation of current rock-engineering technological developments on a wide scale. This paper covers most of the technological developments likely to be required for mining at very high stresses, but it is clear that improved regional support systems will need to be developed to ensure defective stability of the rockmass during mining operations. Similarly, it is clear that improved strategies for mining in large-scale geologically disturbed areas, where slip on faults or dykes can result in wide-spread rockburst damage, will have to be addressed

To improve the pumping capacity and engineering efficiency of fresh thickened tailings slurry, a high charge density superplasticizer was developed to improve the rheological properties of tailings slurry. The effects of superplasticizer content, the concentration and fineness of tailings, the proportion and type of cementitious materials, temperature, and hydration time on the rheological properties of unclassified tailings slurry and backfill materials were studied. The variation characteristics of the slurry yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy with different factors were measured by a Brookfield R/S-SST plus rheometer. The experimental results of fresh thickened tailings illustrated that the higher the concentration of the slurry and the finer the tailings, the worse the rheological properties of the slurry. The results of cemented paste backfill materials indicated that the rheological parameters increased as binder content and time increased. The rheological parameters decreased as the temperature increased. The addition of a superplasticizer reduced the rheological parameters and improved the rheological behavior of the fresh thickened tailings and cemented paste backfill materials, which was beneficial to the slurry’s pipeline transportation. This paper can provide technical guidance for slurry transportation in the backfill system and provide a reference for designing the superplasticizer used in tailings.

The molten metal circulation pump has become a staple for melting aluminum in reverberatory furnaces. The forced convection that is created in the melt efficiently provides circulation while dramatically improving melt rates, lowering fuel consumption, extending refractory life, and providing metallurgical homogeneity. Two metallurgical guidelines that are important to many casthouses are molten metal inclusion levels and hydrogen gas content. In order to improve molten metal quality, furnace and casting practices must 'manage these molten metal defects, Today specialized in-line degassing and filtration equipment is used downstream of the furnace to accomplish these tasks. In contrast, the molten metal gas injection pump has metallurgical contact time in the process for hours during the charging/homogenization cycle. The qualitative benefits of employing a gas injection pump to "pre-clean" are outlined and discussed against historical empirical information obtained with alternate methods. Further, a recent study quantifies the merits of this gas injection technique as an effective molten metal quality improvement tool. Specifically, the effects on inclusion level as determined by PoDFA?, gas content as determined by A1SCAN? sampling and alkali metal content as determined by spectrographic analysis are examined in relationship to various gas feed compositions and flow rates.

Since Jameson Cell flotation technology was first installed in a coal flotation application in 1988/89 at Newlands Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) there have been fundamental improvements to its design which has led to its current status as the leading technology in Australia for fine coal flotation. These improvements, which include key hardware modifications, consist of the re-development of the orifice plate to produce considerable increase in wear life and reduction in power consumption for a given air entrainment and a significant increase in the amount of air that is entrained. Modifications to the downcomer allow maximisation of residence time and air entrainment while changes to the feed and air distribution system allows a reduction in installation cost and a reduction of solids ingress into the air line. Additionally, operational improvements such as the use of recycle to maintain constant flow to the cell feed are discussed. The recent installation at Hail Creek in the Bowen Basin, which consists of three B6000/20 Jameson Cells (6 m diameter bottom-fed distributor with 20 downcomers) will be reviewed as a case study. The latest design and operability of the cells are summarised and compared against one of the original designs at Riverside CHPP also in the Bowen Basin.

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

Improve the field-of-view into the front-right blind spot for drivers of large haulage trucks, thereby reducing the growing collision hazard in surface mines. Approach Reduce the glare problem found in the first generation fresnel lens blind area viewer design by eliminating the upward-looking section of the fresnel lens and adding a rear hood to reduce backlighting. How It Works The first generation blind area viewer was developed and in-mine tested as an aid to improved visibility for large haulage trucks. Other aids were improved left-and right-hand mirrors. Evaluations showed that a blind area viewer mounted on the right-front of the radiator deck was effective and was readily accepted by drivers. Nevertheless, because glare was a problem under certain conditions, a low-profile viewer was developed. Glare control louvers from the earlier design were kept and a backlighting glare control hood was added. The height of the hardware was reduced by eliminating the top three inches of the fresnel lens. This portion of the lens contained an upward-looking segment which originally was thought to be needed so the driver could see the horizon when he looked through the viewer and be better
