The operating environment for mine managers continuously evolves and effective mine managers must be flexible and adaptive to meet challenges. Governance and regulation constantly change in an environment of commodity cycles and finite resources. This increases pressure on the economic return achieved by the operation. As such, effective mine managers must be aware of and manage the operating environment û the broader, issues-based environment not just the immediate day-to-day responsibility of mine managing. This includes delivering on safety, community and environmental priorities. At Rio Tinto Aluminium, part of managing the business is via investment in the area of social partnerships to engage employees and the broader community in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs commitment to sustainability. The Future Reef partnership entered with the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation in 2005 forms an important part of Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs climate change strategy. This four-year, A$1 million investment funds programmes looking at the effect of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef. The partnership is a unique example of industry and science working together on an area of mutual and national concern. Modernization of flat rolling plants is essential to sustainably fulfill increasing market demands and to improve competitiveness. Intelligent modernizations ensure getting maximum prime yield of existing mills, even if they have gone through half a century of operation. Existing mills were designed based on former production, consumption and quality targets. Ever increasing requirements such as increase of productivity, change of product mix (e.g. new steel grades), reduction of energy consumption and improvement of product quality lead to the necessity to adapt the existing equipment to the new target. SMS group provides, besides the reliable equipment and automation solutions to successful upgrades of existing mills, also a systematic approach to develop technical and economical solutions together with our customers (conceptual engineering). This paper describes the SMS group approach to modernizations / upgrades, introduces powerful performance modules and provides a number of successful examples that have been implemented recently.

"In recent years, the increased demand for advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) mainly had been driven by the need of the automotive industry to reduce weight and to improve safety. Beside good ductility and high strength, those steels have a high bake hardening (BH) effect, giving additional contribution to the strength of structural parts, subjected to the paint baking process. In this paper we concentrate results gained for hot rolled dual phase (DP) steels.For the simulation of changing process conditions within the final hot rolling the specimens were hot deformed using different schedules of temperatures and reductions, selected according to the non-recrystallization temperature (TnRX). It was possible to refine the DP steel structure by control-ling the deformation temperature and the amount of strain below TnRX during the thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP). This structure refinement resulted in an improvement of the strength and BH behaviour. A wide spectrum of mechanical properties could be obtained depending on the different hot deformation schedules. The best strength and BH levels were recorded for the deformation below TnRX at the highest amount of strain.IntroductionDP steels are characterized by a good formability, high strength and a good compromise between strength and ductility [1]. Moreover, the DP steels exhibit a continuous yielding behaviour, low yield point and a high strain-hardening coefficient [2]. Furthermore, the DP steels often show a large potential for bake hardening (BH). BH refers to the increase in yield strength as a result of the paint baking treatment of the shaped auto-body parts. The primary mechanism that causes the additional strengthening is the immobilization of dislocations by the segregation of interstitial atoms, known as classical static strain aging [3]. The increase of strength thus achieved allows a further reduction of sheet thickness and improves the crash safety and the dent resistance. The BH of special steel qualities is technically used in DP, where e.g. the increase in strength is realized in the final heat treatment [4]. Previous own investigations [5-6] stated that the BH effect of DP is much stronger than that one for conventional BH steels."

Although it is impossible to give definite final figures at this time on Nation-wide accident occurrence in 1933 , enough data are at hand to indicate that the progress in safety in the mining industry, which first became apparent in 1930 and was accentuated in 1931 and 1932 , was continued and much improved in 1933. This improvement was of considerable magnitude in mining both bituminous coal and anthracite but was not so great in other branches of the mining industry . While the volume of work done in all phases of mining increased in 1933 over that in 1932 , the exact amount of the increase is not yet known . Usually increased activity in mining is accompanied by even greater increase in the rate of occurrence of accidents to the workers , but happily it appears that this " rule " was not operating in 1933 --at least in the coal -mining industry .

Electric furnace smelting is one of the principal unit operations for ferroalloy production, and increased process intensity, improved availability, minimal maintenance and a longer campaign life are common objectives for electric furnace operation in order to obtain favourable economics of production. Furnace designers have continued to develop innovative solutions that have allowed these objectives to be realised, e.g., furnace cooling systems, and numerical modelling plays a key role in the design process. Enhanced understanding of the energy transfer process in the furnace and the ability to develop, evaluate and optimise components of the crucible design to match process requirements are the key motivators for modelling. This paper provides an overview of recent applications of numerical modelling to the design of electric furnaces. The aim is to illustrate what can be done, and identify areas where further work is needed in this field. Examples include furnace bath modelling, crucible cooling system design, taphole design, baking of Soderberg electrodes, off-gas systems, and fume control and building ventilation. It is argued that the trend is for numerical models to become more encompassing while at the same time more accessible, and therefore further improvements in furnace design will be realised with continued and well validated modelling efforts.

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

"This paper introduces the mineralogical analysis of certain polymetallic copper-zinc ore in China with the aim of improving the flotation process. The main valuable elements, mineral phases and compositions of run-of-mine ore were inspected by the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and chemical analysis. For a deep known of the old process defects, Mineral Liberation Analysis system (MLAs) was employed to investigate the minerals liberation degree of selected key slurry points. Analysis results show that the run-of-mine ore belongs to the original copper-zinc polymetallic symbiotic ore at low oxidative level, which mainly contains 0.16% Cu, 4.43% Zn and 0.88% Sn. Gangue minerals are mainly silicate minerals, and zinc mineral is sphalerite. MLAs test illustrates that about 86% sphalerite has been dissociated in zinc flotation feed. In the current flotation process, over grinding of sphalerite monomer and insufficient liberation of intergrowths are the key problems need to be solved imminently. Up to this point, a new process consisted of two steps roughing unit is submitted in this research. It contributes two positive effects on zinc flotation performance: (i) separating sphalerite monomer timely to decrease overgrinding; (ii) improving zinc minerals intergrowths liberation efficiency. Flotation results indicate that the zinc concentrate grade increased 0.90% and the recovery improved 0.96% in the new flotation processINTRODUCTION Mineralogical analysis mainly focusses on solving mineralogy problems in minerals processing, assisting in minerals behaviors prediction and control for separation engineering (Falkovich, et al., 2001; Hillier, et al., 2003; Schouwstra and Smit, 2011). Process defects searching becomes its ordinary work, and flotation optimization appears to be its targets gradually. For example, Lucky Friday mine company (Idaho America) fails to obtain qualified lead concentrate as the change of ore properties (Nadoll, et al., 2011). Mineralogical analysis ascertains that there are too many dissociated sphalerite, pyrite and gangue particles exist in lead concentrate. According to this, more cleaning units are added to solve problems effectively. Kanowna Belle mine (Australia) takes a flash circuit in operation successfully with the aim of optimize flotation process, under the helps of mineralogical analysis and industrial test (Newcombe, et al., 2013). Lotter N.O. (2011) gives a deep description on how mineralogical data assisting mineral processing engineers to design and optimize flowsheet. For decades, quantitative and automated mineralogy techniques (Andersen, et al., 2009; Gu, et al., 2012; Oghazi, et al., 2009; Yu, et al., 2007) get well developed and hugely improve the veracity and repeatability of minerals properties measurement. Among these, MLAs (Gu, 2003) provided by JKMRC (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center) is critically acclaimed all over the world. This analysis system can measure mineral phases composition and content, particles size, minerals occurrence and liberation degree directly."

"During mechanical flotation of fine liberation sized complex rare earth ores, a large fraction of ultrafine valuable mineral particles are lost to tailings. Fine gangue mineral particles can be entrapped within the froth phase and be floated together with target mineral particles. Another common challenge in ultrafine rare earth mineral flotation is the formation of a sticky froth (excessively stable froth). Thus, the improvement of the flotation of fine and ultrafine rare earth bearing minerals through appropriate cell design and reagent selection is highly desirable. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of a pico-bubble cavitation flotation column in improving selective recovery of ultrafine rare-earth elements (REEs) bearing minerals from complex and low-grade ores. In pico-bubble cavitation column, very small bubbles are generated which are capable of attaching to ultrafine particles and consequently modifying their surface properties. The overall effect of these processes should lead to improved flotation selectivity and recovery of ultrafine RE mineral particles. In this paper, the effects of a number of flotation operating variables on recovery and grade of REE minerals was investigated using a continuous pilot scale pico-bubble column flotation. At the flotation conditions used in this study, subtle monazite upgrade was observed while gangue Fe oxide was preferentially floated even in the presence of depressants. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have unique properties such as superconductivity and catalytic activity, and are in high demand for a large number of cutting-edge technologies in the modern world including the production of mobile phones, fuel cells, displays, permanent magnets for wind power generation, high-capacity batteries, green energy devices, etc (Naumov, 2008). REEs tend to be intimately associated within many minerals, and are rarely found in high concentrations in deposits for economic extraction. Up to now, among over 250 minerals containing REEs, bastnasite (Ce), monazite (Ce, Th and La) and xenotime (Y) are the three main minerals that contain sufficient grade of REEs for commercial exploitation (Zhang and Edwards, 2012). The deposits that contain bastnäsite, monazite and xenotime usually have complicated mineral compositions, with various valuable minerals of fine embedded grain sizes in association with complex gangue minerals. In order to ensure liberation of the REEs minerals, fine grinding to less than 30 µm is necessary. This fine grinding leads to difficulty in recovering a large proportion of fine and ultrafine particles in separation processes such as flotation (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Consequently, highly liberated and ultrafine fine valuable REEs particles are lost into tailings during traditional mechanical flotation. Besides, the formation of extremely sticky and stable froth inhibits the drainage of hydrophobic particles. Thus, improving flotation of rare earth bearing minerals, particularly the ultrafine size range, is highly desirable."

The large El Cerrejon coal open pit in north east Columbia has been developed over the last decade in a remote, entirely new mining area with hitherto unskilled inhabitants. Now over 200 pieces of heavy equipment operate with high reliability and availability due to successful theoretical training and skill improvement programs tuned to the specific reliability needs of the worksite and environment. The process of continuous improvement adopted promises further competitive advantages of the project.

Nowadays, the HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) is an intermediate step between filtering and balling in the most modern iron ore pelletizing operation. The operation debottlenecks filtering process and reduces pressure over the typical milling process to control particle size to the balling. The present study evaluated aspects of microwave application to the iron ore concentrate fed to HPGR in a bench scale unit. Iron ore concentrate was irradiated varying the microwave exposure time and grinding efficiency was evaluated. The moisture influence in the HPGR efficiency was also assessed. The pellet feed blaine surface area (BSA) improved by 300 cm2/g and % < 325# fraction by 3%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show the formation of micro-cracks onto the particle surface induced by microwave; the effect observed helped improve the milling process performance, in addition to the moisture reduction observed due to the temperature increase.

Many of the pyrite concentrates produced at South African gold and uranium mines contain economically significant amounts of nickel, copper, and cobalt, apart from gold and uranium. In some cases these concentrates are leached for uranium, followed by roasting and cyanidation of the calcine for the extraction of the gold. Even if their intrinsic value is excluded, the presence of appreciable amounts of base metals can lead to excessive consumption of cyanide and zinc in the conventional process for the recovery of gold from calcines. The extent to which base metals, particularly cyanocides in the calcine, can be made soluble in water or in dilute acid by variation of the pyrite roasting conditions was investigated. An important finding of the investigation was that the conditions producing favourable base-metal sulphation (and hence solubility in water) also produced good sulphation of the uranium values that had not been extracted in a conventional leach of the original pyrite. Thus, if the pyrite is subjected to a sulphating roast followed by quenching in water (or dilute acid), it should be possible for the uranium to be extracted in improved yield. The need for leaching of the pyrite would therefore fall away. It was noted that sulphation roasting also resulted in improved gold extractions when the calcine was subsequently subjected to conventional cyanide-extraction procedures. From well-sulphated calcine, the dissolution of base metals and uranium appeared to be fairly independent of leaching pH, time, and temperature. On an inadequately sulphated calcine, Iow pH values during leaching gave increased extraction of copper and uranium but did not have a significant effect on the dissolution of nickel and cobalt. The extraction of uranium increased with increasing leaching time and temperature, while only longer times at a Iow pH value markedly improved the extraction of copper. The extraction of cobalt was fairly independent of leaching time and temperature, but the results were insufficient for a conclusive evaluation to be made of their effects on the dissolution of nickel. A cursory economic assessment &apos;indicated that sulphation roasting applied to the pyrites investigated is likely to be very profitable.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a study of methods to improve the efficiency of the process used to pickle stainless steels. A review of the literature on pickling of stainless steels showed that the chemistry of several process operations involved in the pickling of stainless steels is not fully understood, and that further research could improve the pickling efficiency. The benefits of this research would be a reduction in the annual loss of several thousands of tons of critical minerals such as nickel and chromium, and a reduction in the amount of solids and spent acid solution that are currently discarded. The conclusion from this review is that further research is needed in four operations that either directly or indirectly influence the pickling process: hot working, annealing, conditioning, and the actual operation of pickling, Laboratory studies of the pickling operation are presently in progress.

Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry&apos;s history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry&apos;s history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. "Assessment of opportunities to improve mineral processing performance in existing concentrators and in describing undeveloped orebodies is key to improving the business case of a mining company. This assessment has traditionally been performed using the distinct and separate inputs from Mineral Processing and Mineral Science.More recently, Process Mineralogy has been used to integrate these two disciplines. This trend has been driven by the need to develop and process more challenging ore deposits, and has been assisted by the availability of modern automated instruments. Together with the acquisition of a QemSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscope) from CSIRO in Australia, and with the use of a supporting SEM with EDX / WDX capabilities and an XRD, the development of Process Mineralogy at Falconbridge commenced in 1997.The sampling challenges in presenting a QemSCAN with representative sample material at the polished section level are significant, but have been effectively addressed. The full description of this aspect is beyond the scope of this paper.It is shown that, by use of this approach, the set nature of an orebody can be best exploited with selected flowsheet changes in a concentrator which address the generic characteristics of the orebody. In this way, the flowsheet provides a process that more effectively fits the mineral processing requirements of the ore. This leads to clear and tangible improvements in grade and recovery."
