To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

Wolhuter entitled, 'Utilisation of slags for the manufacture of cement.' After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. May I now call on Dr Stutterheim, Deputy Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, to contribute to your paper, and to tell us something about the Conference on the Chemistry of Cement which he attended in Tokyo towards the end of last year." Soil Testing for Engineers. By T. W. Lambe. Published by John Wiley & Sons. 165 P. $5.00.-Filling a need for a text for the teaching of soil testing in the laboratory, this book is also of value as a reference for practicing engineers and for personnel in soil laboratories. Following an introductory chapter on general laboratory procedures are chapters devoted to the individual laboratory soil tests which are commonly employed. Apparatus, supplies, recommended procedures, discussion of procedure, calculations results, and numerical examples are provided for each test. Brief derivations of formulas and explanations and discussions of calibration procedures and special techniques are given in the appendix. Mesabi Pioneer. Incorporation of a 2,727 mtpd, $5.7 million flotation circuit into the Mclaughlin flowsheet was completed in November 1991. This capital addition reduced overall operating costs and improved the gold recovery of the low grade refractory reserves over that expected for direct cyanidation. In addition, flotation provided a means to generate a sulfide concentrate which is utilized to supplement feed to the pressure oxidation circuit.

The role of metals in the economy is discussed with regard to the flow of metals through to final demand and is illustrated by data for seven metals. Factors influencing the changing pattern of metal consumption are described, including relative prices. A des- cription and discussion of current metal demand forecasting methodologies precedes a discussion firstly of broad economic trends and secondly of the evolving pattern of metal consumption relative to GDP (metal consumption intensity), as technology and other factors change and as economies mature. The tendency for metal consumption intensity to plateau and decline when economies reach a certain region of per capita GDP, following a rapid rise early in the industrial- ization process, is shown in comparative data for seven metals and six countries.

IN 1877 the Pennsylvania Railroad Company removed an old bridge from its line at Duncannon, Pa., built intermediate piers and erected shorter spans of the Pratt truss type, which had previously been in use on another portion of the road. The design of this truss would not admit of diagonals larger than 1 5/8 inches diameter, and in order to stiffen the bridge somewhat steel rods were introduced for the main diagonals in the first and second panels, 1 5/8 inches and 1 3/8 inches diameter respectively. These rods were threaded without upsetting, and by the ordinary formulae the strains were of the same intensity upon both, viz., 16,000 pounds per square inch with the maximum loading. The other main diagonals in the truss are 1 5/8 inches diameter, and of iron. It was specified for the steel rods : Elastic limit, - 45,000 lbs. Tensile strength, - 80,000 lbs. Elongation, - 20 per cent. The steel was procured without difficulty, and it allowed a factor of safety of 2 3/4 at elastic limit, while a similar factor of 2 1/2 had for a long time been successfully used for iron. In the course of three years, from time to time, six of these steel rods broke, three of them being 1 3/8 inches in diameter, and three 1 5/8 inches in. diameter. The broken rods were tested, and three of them. analyzed at Altoona to ascertain the cause of failure, and what modi¬fications should be made in the steel for such service. Examination showed that all the rods were broken in detail close under the nut. The threads were well cut and properly rounded at the root. In testing the rods micrometer screws,. reading to .0001" with electric bell to signal the contact, were attached to the test pieces, and by this means the modulus of elasticity and elastic limit accurately obtained.

Volumes 57 and 58 of the Transactions were mailed together during the third week of August to all members whose dues for 1918 had been paid on Aug. 1. Any member whose copies fail to reach him within a reasonable time is requested to notify the Secretary. Volume 59 is on the press, and will be ready for distribution early in October.

The mechanism of caving is of interest to the mining engineer only in areas where he is directly concerned. One area is surface subsidence which is outside the scope of this paper. Another area is at the face where coal is being extracted and where control of caving is of vital importance. Coal mining systems have been developed with many considerations in mind, but in this list of considerations, strata control has seldom been given much importance. Research is in progress in Australia to endeavour to determine an optimum sequence for coal extraction underground. As information becomes avail- able from this work it is hoped that appropriate methods of controlling caving in various strata conditions will be devised. When this is done, equipment may be introduced to permit the mining operation to proceed under optimum conditions for strata control, rather than devising a mining procedure to suit the equipment available and methods developed for other reasons.

Any contractor who agrees to supply materials or to perform services for a sum, is well aware of the importance of proper pre-bid information. Being able to properly plan costs and methods results in profits that allow the contractor to prosper. The paper discusses procedures used in estimating pre-bid cost; in particular, drilling and blasting cost for highways, dams and general construction projects. It breaks cost down into five categories and relates them to a total estimate used in bidding and budgeting a construction project.

The following petition for amendment of the constitutional provisions relating to qualifications for membership in the Institute, signed by 75 members, of whom 27 are members of the Committee on Increase of Membership, was received by the Board of Directors, was printed on the program of the New York Meeting sent to all members early in January, and is now being voted upon by the membership: In accordance with the terms f Article X, we hereby propose the following amendment to the Constitution, Article II, Section 2: Members shall comprise all those persons who on the third Monday of February, 1918, were members of the Institute, and in addition thereto, all those thereafter, elected or transferred into the, class of Members. A person to he eligible for election or transfer into the class of Members must he at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. Graduation from the scientific course of a college, approved by the Committee on Membership, shall be considered equivalent to two years' employment, as required in the previous sentence.

The co-operation of the members of the Institute is earnestly sought by the Committee on Nominations, recently appointed by the Board of Directors, in its work of formulating a ticket for officers and places falling vacant in the Board of Directors in February, 1916. The Committee must present the official ticket of nominations to the Board of Directors at its October meeting. Members are, therefore, urged to send promptly their nominations for officers and Directors in order that the Committee may have an opportunity to give there full consideration. The State School of Mines, University of Utah, is this year giving-a four weeks' course for prospectors-Jan. 8 to Feb. 3, 1917-covering the fundamentals of geology, mineralogy, mining and the metallurgical treatment of ores. There will be 36 lectures of 1 hr. each and about 20 laboratory periods, each 3 hr. in length. It is the purpose of the School of Mines to make the course entirely a practical one, and purely theoretical considerations will be omitted. The laboratory work is designed to supplement the lectures and-to give those taking the course a working knowledge of the principles involved. In order to bring the course within the reach of all, no laboratory fees will be charged, and the only fee will be a nominal one for registration in the University, of $1.00, but it is expected that those who attend will be genuinely interested in the work.
