Operation of the Bureau of Mines raw refuse continuous separation pilot plant is described, including modifications made to plant equipment for improved performance. Products recovered from refuse, many of which have been evaluated by other laboratories and private firms, are discussed. Sampling procedures used in the pilot plant and detailed data obtained from processing refuse from 13 municipalities are presented in appendixes. Fuel evaluations made on combustible fractions of refuse from the various municipalities are also presented. Information and data obtained at the pilot plant have been used to assist many municipalities in solving their urban refuse problems.

Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

After evaluating preceding studies and designs of lightweight supports, ESD selected the all-hydraulic and the hydromechanical concepts for detailed design and fabrication. Further analysis and testing showed that the all-hydraulic design was economically justified and met all the crucial engineering, manufacturing, and design criteria identified during the evaluation phase. Following Bureau of Mines approval of the detailed design, four all-hydraulic support models were fabricated. Once functional and structural testing was successfully completed, 40 additional units were constructed and distributed for in-mine testing. The units were very well-liked by all three demonstration mines. The wide- spread interest in supports for seam heights greater than 8 feet led to expansion of the design data package. ESD designed four basic models to cover the new height range, but no hardware has yet been fabricated for the new design.

To meet the increasing demands of the quality and long term stability of technical systems also the applied materials have to full fill higher standards. This is of special importance where the function of a whole system depends on the reliability of the used materials for example for connector systems in automotive, computer and other electronic equipment?s. In most cases for connector systems electro deposited top layers are applied. To improve the quality of the applied layers new electro deposited systems are developed. One important field of research are the development of composite materials as dispersion coatings and multilayer systems. Multilayers are systems with a high number of single inter-layers of different metals or alloys with the wide chance of the alloy composition. As gold is one of the most important contact material for high quality connector systems it is used as basis for the development of multilayer systems. For the electrodeposition of multilayers two different methods can be applied, the single and the dual plating process. As in the dual plating process two different electrolytes are used, the single plating process allows the formation of multilayers from one electrolyte. In the presented research results cobalt and nickel are used besides gold for the formation of the multilayers. The properties of the layers can be influenced in a wide range by the change of electrolyte composition and the process parameters as current density, current waveform, temperature, hydro-dynamic conditions at the electrode surface and by the number and thickness of the inter layers of the deposited materials. The paper describes the fundamentals of the electro deposition of multilayer systems. For the investigation of the properties of the multilayers different techniques are applied. One of the most important parameter are the thickness of the total layer and of the applied sublayers. The thickness of the sublayers can be varied between a few nanometers up to micrometers. The wear resistance, the contact resistance and the plug-in forces are measured as these parameters are important for the technical application of such layers. For the description of the structure composition and surface properties the sample where also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray-analyses (EDX) and glow discharge optical spectroscopy (GDOS). The paper shows that the deposition of gold based multilayers is possible and that the properties of such systems can be varied in a wide range what opens new fields of applications of such materials.

"THE MINES OF THE FUTURE The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising as global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yes, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption, and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security, and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is indeed precarious, and the mining community is necessarily a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, many of whom will be mine engineers, which are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems. There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that we continue to expand scale toward “super” pits and “deep” underground mining fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in-situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction, and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment; novel separations, processing and recycling methods; and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions – just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in our field, complete with big data issues, sophisticated analytics and modeling efforts, and cyber-security challenges. Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining, and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that our focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can we make miners safer and healthier on-site and off? How can we contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and long-term, for having a mine next door? How can we help transform artisanal mining practices to also contribute to sustainable development? How can our work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can we improve the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises?"

Water based paint formulations consist of some industrial minerals with quantities varying from 20 to 50 %. Quality of paint is directly related to these minerals used as pigment or filler in the production. Titanium dioxide is the most important and expensive pigment in paint formulations. Other minerals such as calcite and calcined kaolin are used as filler and mainly as a substitute for TiO2. Consequently, particle-particle interactions including adsorption, coating and size distribution of pigment mixture directly affects the paint quality. In the present paper, a new type of pigment mixture for possible use in architectural water based paints was developed through grinding. The effect of different types of grinding methods on physical properties of TiO2 and calcite mixture and the quality of paint produced by these mixtures have been revealed. Three different types of mills; conventional ball mill, vibratory ball mill and high-speed attritor were used for grinding of TiO2 and calcite. Viscosity, zeta potential and particle size distributions were used to characterize the pigment mixtures obtained upon grinding. The quality of paint was evaluated by standards based on both wet and dry paints such as viscosity, density, opacity and gloss. The paint produced with the pigment mixtures prepared in vibratory ball mill and high speed attritor showed improvement in physical properties particularly in the distribution and dispersion of mineral particles. Believe it or not, mine evaluation and feasibility studies are as old as the industry itself. In the first recorded writing on mining by Agricola (1556), he gave several clues as what to look for in evaluating a mine, to determine if it was economically feasible. Below is the guidance from Agricola, with my interpretation of what he would include today. Now a miner, before he begins to mine the orebodies must consider seven things, namely: ? The situation (the geography/topography). ? The conditions (the geologic/mineralogic and mining conditions). ? The water (availability, hydrology and ownership). ? The roads (plus the railroads, power lines, all other infrastructure). ? The climate (the weather-rainfall/environment). ? The right of ownership (the land and legal entitlement). ? The neighbors (the social environmental concerns of the area). It is amazing how much of his guidance has not changed in 455 years. Yet Agricola gives no guidance on determining the correct cost, or determining the correct commodity pricing. But he does give a few words of caution on the related ethics involved on buying mineral properties: ?A prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him.? Three hundred years later (1866), to further amplify this point, in the most famous thing that Mark Twain never said, as an introduction to a lecturer to an audience of gold-miners at Red Dog, CA, the famed author/humorist allegedly described a mine as ?a hole in the ground owned by a liar? (Farrar & Rinehart, 1935). So, one might conclude that between these two dates, the mining industry did little to improve its reputation. Unfortunately, since Mark Twain allegedly made those remarks, we have not done near enough to gain accountability for the mineral industry.

"Particulate Copper Silicon carbide (Cu-SiCp) composites find application as wear and heat resistant materials in electrical sliding contacts such as in homopolar machines, railway overhead current collector systems where high electrical/thermal conductivity combined with good wear properties is required. However, challenges occur during machining due to the presence of hard reinforcement in the matrix. This may lead to high turnover of tool wear and poor surface finish. The adoption of near-net shape technology to produce such hard-to-machine metal matrix composites and subsequent finish machining with its attendant cost has reported limited success. This paper critically appraises the challenges and opportunities in the improvement of tribological characteristics of particulate Cu-SiC composites and identifies low cost reinforcement material that could be used to improve its tribological characteristics.IntroductionTribology consideration is increasingly becoming a decisive factor in the design and selection of materials for applications involving interacting surfaces in relative motion. The consideration is mainly on the combined effects of friction and lubrication on material's wear integrity and performance amongst other. Annual losses due to tribology in the US industries are estimated at between 1-2% of the Gross National Income [1], in Russia it is about 1-4% of the GDP [2]. Thus, the attributes of tribology has become imperative in modem machinery especially those applications involving sliding and rolling surfaces, and electrical contacts [3- 8].These are readily found in homopolar machines, internal combustion engines, aircraft engines, gears, cams, seals and railway overhead current collector systems [9-12]. In these systems, the dissipation of frictional heat arising from the interacting surfaces as quickly as possible imposes constraints on the choice of materials for such application to prevent softening, plastic and shear flow and the transfer of metal as wear debris onto the interacting surfaces. If these possibilities occur, system performance is compromised and premature failure may result. Materials for these systems are expected to possess high electrical and thermal conductivities, low coefficient of thermal expansion, good corrosion resistance and high melting point [3-8, 13]."

Several reactive metal purification processes using molten salts generate effluent from which significant quantities of metal can be recovered prior to discardinglrecycling the salt. A Salt-scrub [SS] process has been applied where the reactive metals are recovered as a metal-gallium alloy by calciothermic reduction of the metal compounds. The SS alloy compositions were produced by mixing, pressing and sintering the metal-powders. Measurement of metal recovery has been studied for cerium, silver, tin and lead. The process has been optimized for variables such as the metal quantity per kg of effluent salt, amount of excess calcium over stoichiometry, stirring rate and time and holding time at reduction temperature. Over ninety-seven percent metal recovery has been obtained under optimized conditions. The development of an alloy for efficient Salt Scrub processing reduces a major contaminated waste disposal problem as well as recovering the valuable reactive metal. Surrogate metals have been used in this work to study the behavior of plutonium.

"Increasing demand and market economics have pushed the mining industry to adopt improved mining practices and minimize losses. Simulation, in this regard, has proved to be an efficient tool to help in decision making purposes. We present the development of a discrete event simulation model for a large-scale open pit mine to run experimental scenarios for near optimal decision making. A mixed integer linear goal programming (MILGP) optimization model is also presented for shovel allocation optimization. The mathematical model will be coupled with the simulation model at the dispatching stage for shovel allocation optimization and thus it will act as the link to optimal short-term schedule to assist in achieving better mine plan compliance across short-term and operational planning time horizons. The main contribution of this work so far is the development of the MILGP model and development, implementation and verification of the simulation model on a large scale oil sands open pit mine case study. The results obtained so far are promising and have been validated against the historical data of the mine, proving the applicability of the model for experimental scenario analysis. INTRODUCTION It is essential for mining operations to adopt efficient operational methods and technologies to cope with market demand and economics. Mining operations, on the other hand, being capital intensive, find it risky to bring in any changes. Simulation is a tool that can help in this regard for better decision making purposes with an improved and quantitative measure of confidence. A true representative model that satisfies the objectives set for the simulation is essential to achieve its applicability for decision making purposes. A similar simulation model is presented in this paper for analyzing the operational KPIs of a large scale oil sand open pit mine with truck-shovel operations. This paper is aimed at providing an overview of the development of the model and the statistical outcomes validating its applicability for experimental scenario runs and thus for better decision making purposes. A mixed integer linear goal programming (MILGP) optimization model is also presented in this paper that acts as an upper stage in a multi-stage dispatching system. The optimization model is proposed to be linked with the dispatching logic in the simulation for optimal shovel assignments and target productions by reading available mining faces directly from the short-term extraction schedule. This model is aimed at bridging the gap between operations and short term extraction schedule; and may help achieve better compliance between the two."

The determination of densimetric information to predict coal washabilities is an important step in characterising the feed material, as well as the performance of operating plants. However, traditional methods like float-and-sink analysis are hazardous and time-consuming. This is especially true for finer particle size ranges, where very long settling times are required in a medium. De Beers Technologies recently developed a density analyser, known as the RhoVol, for use on diamondiferous kimberlite. Operating over size ranges from 25 mm down to 3 mm, it can determine the mass, volume, density, size and shape of all the particles in a given population and is thus able to provide information about the densimetric distribution on a single particle basis. A study was carried out to compare uncalibrated and calibrated RhoVol results to densimetric and size data obtained using traditional zinc chloride float-sink procedures, for three different coal samples in the size range 3 mm to 8 mm. The results indicate that the RhoVol can be used to provide simple, rapid and safe size-by-washability information for coal, provided proper pre-calibration is done, mainly to account for the effects of particle porosity in the density determination. "Civil design has changed in many ways using BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology in its most recent form. Such a technological breakthrough has not been successful so far in traditional oriented Engineering Geology, except in the Mining and oil exploration markets with budgets on much different scales. The fact is that paper, pencil and hand drawn sketches are still state of the art and a perfectly acceptable way of producing subjective geological interpretations.Using the technology available, we have developed a set of procedures and techniques to combine the latest surveying and remote sensing technology, GIS based tools to manage large data sets and BIM modelling techniques in a 3D geological environment.To demonstrate the concept, the forthcoming Karavanke tunnel project (Slovenia) has been chosen for testing techniques. The project, with its rich documentation from previous phases and new data available, represented a good basis for testing the possibility of digitizing geological data while communicating with Leapfrog Geo 3D modelling algorithms. This type of procedure would then allow engineers at the construction site to use the 3D model for prognosis and evaluation, while upgrading it daily with new information.INTRODUCTIONThe Karavanke tunnel crosses the mountain range on the border between Slovenia and Austria. As the geology is very complex due to its imbricate fan structure, a series of geological – geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations have been performed since the 1970s, resulting in extensive project documentation. The construction of the 7864 m long single-tube two-lane tunnel took place in the late 1980s. Currently, the tunnel represents a critical point on Pan-European Transport Corridor X (Salzburg, Austria – Thessaloniki, Greece), with insufficient safety measures. The need for improved traffic flow and enhanced road safety led the Slovenian government in 2013 to a decision to continue with activities regarding the construction of the second tunnel tube 70 m east of the existing tunnel.The extensive project documentation from previous investigation phases and construction of a new tunnel tube presented a good base for a pilot project, in order to test the emerging new technologies for data acquisition, processing and analysis in a 3D environment. Several products are available on the market for data acquisition and 3D geological modelling, but only a few can be applied in the civil design, as well. Developing a standard format and procedure for implementing the 3D geological model using new remote sensing techniques, 3D geological modelling tools, such as Leapfrog Geo and BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling techniques would move the Engineering Geology, Geotechnics and Tunneling to a more advanced level. 3D modelling tools would therefore not only be used as a visualization tool, but would also contribute to in a more efficient communication and workflow between the professionals involved in the project."

"I think that you will agree with me that we have an excellent program planned for the next three days, comprising various interesting and educational subjects by authors of prominence, which will be of keen interest to all of us in the coal industry. "The Program Committee, chairmanned by John Peperakis, has done an excellent job in securing this very splendid talent for our convention. "I would like to say a word as to the, condition of the coal industry in our part of the country as well as elsewhere. I believe we can look at it with more optimism than in the past several years, particularly in the state of Colorado, with which I am more familiar. "Annual coal production in Colorado gradually dropped from around 12 million tons during the years of World War I to as low as 8 million tons during the last war, and to less than 3 million tons in the year of 1954. We believe that it touched bottom that year, as in 1955 the state production went up again to nearly 3,400,000 tons, equivalent to an increase of 15%. As you know, the national increase in bituminous coal production for the year of 1955 was roughly 2000 over 1954. "The national increase for the first two months of 1956 over the same period of 1955 is approximately 2100. Colorado's production is running around 1000 over the comparable period of last year, and the 5 states represented by our Institute came up with a nice increase in 1955 over 1954 of 1000. The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR), a well-established geophysical technique generally used for shallow civil engineering applications, has, in the last decade, found increasing acceptance as a complementary tool in mineral resource evaluations. As new sites are trialled with the method, a greater understanding is being garnered regarding the most suitable environments for long-range radar. Although successful projects have been conducted worldwide for mineral sands, iron ore and alluvial projects – tropical weathering environments have produced some of the most impressive results. Specifically, tropical nickel laterites have shown to be, with some notable exceptions, ideal GPR environments.Such high-resolution remote sensing has particular relevance to bulk commodities or those which possess significant rheological variation within geological units, and has led to some innovative downstream uses within exploration, project development and the larger mining industry. In this paper, we examine the application of long-range GPR in Indonesian nickel laterite deposits in general, to highlight some of these novel applications with particular reference to resource modelling, mine geology and operational economic implications.CITATION:Francke, J, Smith, D and Ramdhani, A, 2014. It is difficult co know how to deal with this subject before a group having such mixed interests. The mining man is not coo concerned with the problems of alloy research. The engineer is more interested in properties of materials than how these properties can be achieved. The business man feels that scientific history and prognostication are not for him, predicting trends or possible developments in the economic field being a more than sufficient occupation. Yet the application of physical metallurgy research to industry is of importance to miner, engineer, and business man, for only through such application can the continuing existence of industries manufacturing or consuming metals be assured. History shows that hard work does not guarantee industrial survival. For instance, the Bessemer method of steel making superseded puddling operations; it, in its turn, has been largely displaced by open-hearth processing; later, steels made in electric-arc furnaces displaced open-hearth products in the quality field; and now, very specialized steels are being made in high-frequency rather than in arc furnaces. It is apparent then, if industry is co remain healthy, complacency must give way co imaginative planning, based on a thorough knowledge of production technique, a knowledge supplied by efficient research.

Although much talked about, social licence to operate (SLTO) is a relatively new concept that has been deemed as one of the four biggest business risks to a mining project over the life-of-mine. There is no accepted single definition of SLTO and this author understands SLTO to be stakeholder perception of the legitimacy of a project, a company or an industry. At a specific site, and across different sites within the same organisation, SLTO ranges through different levels according to stakeholders’ degrees of acceptance in time and space. Management of SLTO is vital for the mining sector but is difficult as it is informal and intangible. Although there are no key performance indicators, there are certain indicators that enable relative measurement of the ‘level’ of the SLTO. Because of the importance of the SLTO, information management during the entire life-of-mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, becomes crucial for the continued operation of a project.
