"In order to ensure the stability of roadways, Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) has developed a roof support design methodology that integrates analytical, numerical and empirical modelling. This methodology currently is based on a deterministic approach (a single factor of safety against failure is calculated). However, an improved methodology, based on stochastic modelling technique, has also been developed and currently being evaluated. The main advantage of this methodology is that the design is based on the probability distributions of input parameters; thus the outcome is based on a distribution of factors of safety rather than a single factor of safety. An evaluation of factors of safety may also be used to determine the likelihood of failure, which in turn may be utilized to quantitatively determine and evaluate the associated risks in decision making process. This methodology has been evaluated at Grasstree and Moranbah North Coal Mines in the designs of roof support in various critical areas and has been proven to be successful and a better way of determining the roof support requirements.This paper demonstrates the application of this methodology in a design of an install road roof support at Moranbah North Mine, where the 1,750 tonne capacity ''world's highest rated longwall"" has recently been installed.INTRODUCTIONAnglo American Metallurgical Coal Australia (AAMC) operates three longwall (LW) mines located in Central Queensland. There is an increasing emphasis on the reliability at these operations, as the longwalls are getting deeper and facing more geologically challenging conditions. In addition, the Anglo American Vision is to achieve ""Zero Harm"" through the effective management of safety at all businesses and operations. In order to accomplish this vision, AAMC has developed a proactive ground control management system for a safe and efficient production of underground reserves.Proactive ground control management involves understanding the impacts of the geotechnical environment on likely ground behavior, and it consists of approximately 15 major elements. One of the most essential fundamentals of proactive ground control management is to utilize a roof support design methodology that considers different failure mechanisms and also takes into account all important elements. The design methodology becomes even more important when the area in question is a critical area, which is defined as a high risk roadway where any failure may cause increased levels of safety and financial risks to underground workforce and operations."

In this paper a new method to evaluate the stability of yield pillars was introduced. The evaluation of yield pillar stability was conducted in three steps: (1) Estimation of pillar loading - numerical modeling is a good tool to estimate the pillar loading for most of the geological, geometrical and mining conditions. In this study. finite element technique was used to estimate the state of stress, strain, elastic strain energy and plastic energy, etc. at every point within the pillar. (2) Defining the yield pillar loading zones¬. The proposed method considered the non-uniform stress distribution of yield pillars by dividing the area of the yield pillar into three loading zones, namely core, transition and rib zones. (3) Estimation of stability indicators - an appropriate stability measure was proposed for each loading zone. such as; Core Stability Factor. CSF, Pillar Bump Index, PBI and Rib Instability Index. RIF. A case study of successful and unsuccessful yield pillar application was used to assess the applicability of the proposed method.

The 400-ton testing machine, ordered in June, 1875, by the United States Board appointed to test "iron, steel, and other metals," has lately been completed at the Watertown Arsenal, thoroughly proved and accepted by the Board. The excellence of the machine in every respect is more than satisfactory, and its accuracy is at first sight astonishing, although an investigation of its principles must show that if the weighing apparatus will weigh at all, it must do so with perfect accuracy, because all its movements are absolutely without friction. The proof experiments were numerous, and the effects of recoil after sudden ruptures at maximum loads, were watched with great care, but without much anxiety, because the weighing parts affected are by no means delicate in structure, and their motion is almost infinitely small. Among the tests were the following : A forged link of hard, wrought iron, 5 inches in diameter between the eyes, was slowly strained in tension, and broke short off with a loud report at 722,800 pounds. The diameter before breaking at the point of fracture was 5.04 inches; after breaking, 4.98 inches. In order to see if the weighing parts had been disturbed by the recoil, which was obviously near the greatest recoil the machine will ever suffer, a horse-hair was next tested; it was 7-1000ths of an inch in diameter; it stretched 30 per cent., and broke at 1 pound. Other horse-hairs vary in tenacity between 1 and 2 pounds. Of course, the accuracy of the machine on such delicate specimens, and indeed on specimens having some hundreds of pounds tenacity, has been checked and proved by other weighing machines. A 5-inch round bar, turned down to 38 inches diameter along the centre, was pulled apart at 430,200 pounds tension. Then some more horse-hairs were tested ; also copper wires 191/2-1000ths of an inch in diameter, which averaged 25 pounds tenacity..

The Bureau of Mines used 50-and 800-kva electric-arc furnaces to confirm the feasibility of producing ferronickel in electric-arc furnaces from pre-reduced concentrate from the Yugoslavian FENI project. The relationships were established among metallic iron concentrations (degrees of prereduction), ferronickel grades, and nickel recoveries. Smelting the concentrate containing 1.27 wt-pct nickel and metallic iron levels between 2 and 3 wt-pct, produced 15 to 20 pct ferronickel. Higher or lower metallic iron concentrations were compensated by adding oxide pellets or carbon to the electric-arc furnace charge. Over 90 pct of the contained nickel was recovered when up to 20 pct ferronickel was being produced. Data obtained while smelting 16 tons of prereduced concentrate in the 800-kva electric-arc furnace indicated ferronickel can be recovered at an energy consumption of 530 kwhr/ton of prereduced material.

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. The gravimetric integral Knudsen effusion method was used to measure cadmium activity values in binary liquid In-Cd alloys in the range 523 to 573 K. The activity measurements together with other studies from the literature indicate that special bonding conditions exist in the melts near a composition corresponding to InCd3. Sound velocities in In-Cd melts were also measured using a precision pulse-echo over- lap method in the range 404 to 953 K. The frac- tional deviation of experimental and ideal isentropic compressibilities at 623K shows a functional dependence on composition with a pronounced maximum near the composition 75 at.%.

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Over the last 25 years the thin slab casting and rolling process has been gaining a major market share in the production of hot rolled strip, progressively eroding the areas previously of exclusive domain of conventional mills. This is mainly thanks to the competitiveness of the process over conventional ones, and to the growing ability of this technology to cover the majority of market niches, well beyond the boundaries of the commodity market. After having significantly contributed to the continuous expansion of this production mode and after an extensive campaign of theoretical research and physical testing in reference plants, Danieli has progressively developed over the years a new generation of thin slab casting and rolling layout, marking a new phase in the evolution of this process. The new step-ahead is epitomized by the name QSP-DUE. This configuration belongs to the Quality Strip Production (QSP) family, which is Danieli’s strip-quality-oriented thin slab based plants. The innovative features of the process are embodied in the acronym DUE, which stands for Danieli Universal Endless (Danieli patented technology – US patent n. 8087449, January 3rd, 2012). What makes this new concept different is the ability of “universal” rolling modes thanks to the fact that, now, within one single plant it is possible to perform coil-to-coil, semi-endless and endless rolling modes, making this plant a major technology innovation compared to the previous generation.

RIGHT NOW the Canadian oil business is suffering from growing pains brought on by developments outside our borders. I would like, therefore, to place our industry in perspective for you in two ways. I would like first to describe it briefly and let you see it in relation to the world oil industry. Then I would like to bring it back and place it into perspective against a strictly Canadian background. Naturally, in such a discussion, it is necessary to use a certain amount of statistical material. I'll endeavour, however, to keep it to a minimum. Eleven years ago, before the discovery of Leduc, Alberta could boast of having 21,000,000 barrels of crude oil reserves. Five years ago we had 1,810,000,000 barrels. At year end, 1957, our remaining recoverable reserves totalled more than 3,000,000,000 barrels. In 1957, our potential production in Alberta reached an all-time high of 756,000 barrels a day. Unfortunately, our actual average daily production dropped from 393,000 barrels per day in 1956 to 376,000 barrels per day in 1957. And in 1958, to date, it has dropped sharply to around 300,000 barrels per day.

Development of an efficient technology to process complex ores containing gold and antimony as well as silver is described in the paper. The results from the testwork aimed at the valuables recovery by means of flotation are presented. A process sample of antimonite gold-bearing ore was studied in TOMS institute aiming at development of a technology to process such an ore with generation of antimony concentrate and sulphide gold-containing concentrate. Material composition study indicated that the ore included 5.3% of sulphides: arsenopyrite – 2.4%, pyrite -2.4%, and antimonite – 0.5%. Gold is present as an isomorphic dissemination in arsenopyrite. At sighter testing stage a direct selective flotation flowsheet was chosen to process the ore. Antimonite flotation was activated due to addition of lead nitrate. A single cleaning of a rougher flotation concentrate resulted in antinomy concentrate with 30% Sb content and 71% recovery. Au recovery into antimony concentrate did not exceed 1%. Sb flotation tailings were used to float the remaining sulphides and gold. The resulted sulphide concentrate was characterized by Au content of 20 g/t at about 80% recovery, arsenic content - 10% at ~80% recovery, and sulphur content - 18% at ~81% recovery. The sulphide concentrate can be forwarded to further processing aiming at gold recovery. Given that the concentrate is highly refractory it should be pretreated (bacterial or pressure oxidation, Albion process) prior to cyanidation in order to liberate gold from sulphides. The proposed technology allows one to solve the problem of precious metals recovery from antimonite ores.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. The vibration response of a 30 in. diameter high-pressure (845 psi) natural gas pipeline to 11 coal mine blasts was measured. The X-52 steel pipeline was buried 7 ft. below the ground surface. Ground and pipeline motions in terms of velocities were recorded on the pipeline, in the ground adjacent to the pipeline, and near the ground surface directly above the pipeline. These data were used to estimate the maximum stresses and strains in the pipeline occurring during the blasts. Pipeline standoff distances varied from 264 ft. to 3720 ft. Two blast hole layouts and timing schemes were used. One represented highly confined blasts to limit movement of the shot overburden that generated high ground motions at the pipeline. The second represented patterns that provided greater relief and lower the ground velocities at the pipeline.

"Steel bearing piles have long been used to carry high compressive, tensile and lateral loads. Such piles are most commonly tubular or ""H"" profile and are typically installed using percussive techniques. The noise and vibration associated with such installation techniques tends to preclude the use of steel bearing piles in urban and other sensitive areas.This paper describes the design and construction of an innovative new road bridge in Milton Keynes, UK. The steel bearing piles were required to continue out of the ground to form the bridge columns and abutments and then be cast directly into the soffit of the reinforced concrete bridge deck. This project was to be the first time in the UK, that this form of bridge design had been used.The paper shows how new installation techniques allowed the designers to use these high capacity steel elements in a sensitive urban environment without the use of percussive or vibratory installation techniques. Finally the paper shows how these quiet and vibration-less installation techniques can be extended to other applications.A UNIQUE BRIDGE SUPPORTED ON ""BOXED SHEET PILES""CONCEPT HISTORYThere are over 700 bridges in Milton Keynes. Concrete is the dominant construction material, most are single span with massive parallel wing wall retaining abutments. All have a certain uniformity of aesthetic design. Pell Frischmann Consultants Ltd (PFC) proposed to the client, English Partnerships (EP), that an ""integral bridge"" with a slender open appearance would be an appropriate aesthetic form for a new highways bridge, within the district of Westcroft (figure 1). The concept required that the bearing piles be continued up out of the ground to form the bridge columns and abutments. Four rows with four piles in each row were suggested. Each would then be cast directly into the reinforced concrete bridge deck forming a moment connection (figure 2). This concept meant that a single continuous steel structural member would replace traditional reinforced concrete bored piles, pile caps and piers. This member would carry vertical and lateral loads. Many manganiferous silver deposits remain undeveloped because standard chemical extraction methods yield poor recoveries or are ' environmentally unacceptable. Biotreatment of such ore deposits in our laboratory resulted in manganese and silver recoveries of greater than 90%. Ore and sediment samples were collected from mining sites in Colorado and Arizona. Portions of samples were incubated in a semi-solid mineral salts medium amended with 20 mM glucose mid manganese dioxide (Mn medium). The cultures were incubated at 3(fC until manganese reduction was detected by a .color change fr:om .black to clear. Bacteria from these cultures were purified on Tryptic Soy Agar and individual isolates were retested for Mn reduction by an agar overlay method. Bacteria were identified according to Bergefs Manual ?of Systematic . Bacteriology. Most of the Mn-reducing bacteria are Bacillus species. Bacterial manganese reduction kinetic experiments were performed in 52 ml mineral salts broth supplemented with manganiferous silver ore instead of manganese dioiide. These cultures were incubated with agitation for 16 d. Aliquots were removed periodically and analyzed for solubilized manganese by atoniic absorption (AA). Cyanide (1,0 M) Vias added to the remaining ore-medium mixture for a 24 h bottle roll. The supernatant was analyzed for soluble silver by AA. Similar experiments were conducted on a larger scale using 15% pulp density. After bfotreatment of the ore, standard bottle rolls were performed. The pregnant solutions and the residues were analyzed for manganese and silver?using AA or fire assay as appropriate. In sterile. controls-which received no biotreatment, manganese and silver recoveries were 0.3% and 10% respectively; During biotreatment, total manganese solubilizatiori was as high as 99.8%. The reduced manganese could . be stripped from ?the growth medium using hydrometallurgical techniques. Silver recovery vaned from 70% to 92.5%. Microbial treatment of refractory mangairlferous ores can result in high recoveries of manganese and silver. Retention time varies depending upon the relative concentrations of manganese, silver, and other metals in the ore with only two days required in some cases, The biotreatment of ore is environmentally' acceptable while the use. of chemicals such as sulfur dioxide is less so.

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

Zirconium carbide powder has been synthesized from zircon concentrate and methane using a high temperature plasma reactor, a non-transferred DC plasma torch was used as heat source. A high temperature filter consisting of graphite felt was designed, built and operated to separate the zirconium carbide from silicon carbide during the process. Characterization of the collected powders was done by wet chemical analysis using Atomic Absorption (AA), Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM and TEM) and by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). It was found that the zirconium carbide purity was around 95% with silicon carbide being the primary impurity. The powders had particle sizes between 30 and 80 nm. The effect of several experimental variables are presented as well as temperature and velocity profiles calculated in the reactor.

Dielectrophoresis is a separation technique that uses a non-uniform electrical field to separate particles on the basis of their permittivity. There are many areas of mineral processing that might benefit from the application of dielectrophoresis. These include: coarse removal of gangue, recovery of ultrafine particles, upgrading of flotation concentrates or simply as a laboratory analysis technique. In order to determine the potential value of dielectrophoresis to the mineral processing industry, the response of composite particles was investigated. The electrical properties of composites involve complex relationships between the shape, distribution and permittivity of the individual grains within the rock. The relationship between mineral composition and dielectrophoretic force was measured on single particles from two ore types. The results were used to populate a model that could predict the separation characteristics of the ore. The insights gained from this model separator allowed potential applications of the technology to be examined and their performance evaluated.

The mineral industry" has made and will continue to make important contributions to the growth of our economy. However, the industry is presently under continuous and increasingly severe attacks by organizations and individuals interested in the preservation of our environment. Yet neither the public interest value of preservation nor the public interest value of our mineral industry is known. In the absence of such values, judgments about best land use where minerals are involved are nearly always made on emotional grounds. An example of the sort of problem that has been created is in the New York Metropolitan Area. Because of institutionally-created shortages stemming largely from zoning decisions and building over deposits, the effective cost of fine aggregate delivered at dockside at Manhattan rose from $2. 65/cubic yard in July, 1969, to $4.10/cubic yard in May, 1970, this in spite of approximately ;l0,000 years of reserves on Long Island. The cost of fine aggregate for New York City alone has "Increased over $S million annually within one year, with the cost increase for the Tri-State Metropolitan Area (coastal Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York)" exceeding $10 million annually. The ab0ve situation has created a cost increase which is clearly the result of non-conservation of a mineral resource. That is, in readily measurable values, it Is costing the public about $10 million per year because good conservation practices were ignored-a public-interest loss. Admittedly, this is not the whole story because the public is simultaneously obtaining other values from the land surface that would otherwise have had to be dedicated, temporarily to be sure, to mineral recovery-a public-interest gain. However, the point is that we do not know where the balance lies-the net public interest value; it may lie one way for deposits zoned out of existence by a growing suburb, another for areas designed as permanent greenbelts, and still another for areas under new highways

In the same way that a blueprint communicates information about a structure, a useful systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of computing systems. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where in the "bigger picture" a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: 1. The primary purpose of computer based systems relative to particular task or operation. 2. The relationship of systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies. 3. The relationship of systems relative to the organization and its objectives. 4. Indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allocated to support the organization. 5.
