Using a modified Udin, Shaler, and Wulff technique, the surface tension of gold Udin, purified helium was found to be 1400 ± 65 dynes per cm for the temperature range 1017° to 1042°C. IN the original Udin, Shaler, and Wulff technique for measuring the surface tension of copper: variously weighted wires were allowed to extend or contract in a copper cell held at elevated temperatures in vacuum. By plotting stress vs. strain for a wire array in one test, the stress at zero strain is obtained. This is the point where the contractile forces resulting from surface tension are balanced by the applied load, according to the expression: y = e=o r [1] where y is the surface tension in dynes per cm; a,,,, the stress at zero strain in dynes per cm; and T, the radius of the wire in cm. The assumption that the wires deform viscously permits the drawing of a straight line through the points on the stress-strain plot. Justification of the assumption has received further experimental support recently.'-' The presence of grain boundaries in the wires requires a correction to the original expression used." Thus: y = d4=T [l- (dl) (ar)Y1 [2] where, n/l is the number of grain boundaries per unit length, and a, the ratio of grain boundary tension to free surface tension. Alexander, Kuczynski, and Dawson in studying the creep of gold wire in vacuum were unable to obtain reproducible values of the surface tension of gold. In plotting stress vs. strain for progressively longer times, they found that the stress at zero strain drifted with time from positive stress values to negative values. Similarly, for the surface tension of silver, reproducible values were obtained only when a purified helium atmosphere was substituted.' Evidently the evaporation rate of silver in vacuum is too high at the temperatures employed to obtain solid-gas equilibrium even in a similar metal enclosure. Thus reproducibility of results is lost. Experimental Procedure The experimental procedure was much the same as that originally developed by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff with a few modifications and improvements. For greater accuracy in strain measurements, knots gave way to cut gage marks as shown in Fig. 1. These were made with a hand-driven lathe in which razor blades serv'ed as cutting tools. Also a more precise cathetometer with a screw accurate to 0.00015 cm was used. The tests were conducted in an atmosphere of purified .helium rather than in vacuum in order to avoid possible evaporation difficulties. Five mil wire of high purity gold (99.98 pct) was used. After cutting in the gage marks, each wire of a series of about 12 was differently loaded by welding a gold ball to one end. This was done by dipping the end of the wire in a cooling gold droplet, previously melted on a charcoal block with a No. 2 acetylene torch. The other end of the wire was strung through a hole in a gold lid and twisted over the edge to hold the wires fixed and in suspension from the lid. The lid and mounted wires were then dipped in pure ethyl alcohol to dissolve any skin oils and dirt on the surface of the wires due to handling. Finally the lid was put in place on an alundum crucible lined with gold so that the wires hung freely within the gold-lined chamber. This whole assembly was next heated in a quartz nichrome wound tube furnace and heated for a few minutes at 600°C to soften the wires. After this anneal the wires were easily straightened with tweezers. The wire assembly was finally annealed 10" to 25°C above the subsequent test temperature for 2 hr. This treatment allowed the grains to grow to equilibrium size and shape. After the anneal, the lid was mounted in front of the cathetometer. The gage length was measured by sighting the 40 power microscope on the upper lip of the lower gage mark for the first reading, then traveling up to the lower lip of the upper gage mark for the final reading. This procedure was repeated four times to give an average gage length value. In this manner the annealed gage length and the final gage length could be measured to determine the strains. During all measurements, grain counts were made.

"In order to recover nickel ion in a spent electroless nickel - phosphorus alloy plating bath and, at the same time, to remove impurities such as iron and zinc, the applicability of solvent extraction with LlX84I as the extractant has been investigated using actual spent solution. Although the extraction efficiency of nickel from the spent solution is considerably lower than that from the nickel sulfate-nitrate solution, nickel in the spent solution is selectively extracted with high efficiency at the pH of 6 - 7. The extracted nickel is effectively stripped by sulfuric acid at a pH of less .than· 3. On the basis of these results, a· flowsheet for recovering nickel from the spent solution is proposed Chemical equilibrium calculations of the spent solution has shown that the complex formations of nickel with anions such as lactate and phosphonate ions become predominant in the pH range between 2 and 6. This results in the depression of nickel extraction efficiency from the spent solution as compared with that from the .nickel sulfate-nitrate solution. By combining these aqueous equilibrium calculations with the· extraction model considering the extraction stoichiometry and the aggregation of the extractant in the organic phase, the extraction behavior of nickel is quantitatively predicted.IntroductionElectroless plating is indispensable for the recent advanced industries such as the electronic and mechanical industries. Electroless plating baths are repeatedly used by supplying the metal salts; however, the accumulation of the counter anions of the metal ions, the components formed by the oxidation of the reducing reagents in the plating baths, and the metal ions as impurities dissolved from the surface of the objective materials degrades the· quality of the plating. Thus, the baths are finally treated by a precipitation method to form a large amount of metal sludge, which is disposed in dumping sites. Therefore, from the standpoints of environmental protection and resource preservation, it is highly desired to establish a recycling process of the plating baths with minimum emission. Solvent extraction seems to be one of the 'suitable methods to recover metals from the spent electroless plating baths, because the concentration of the metal ion in the baths is relatively high, which is advantageous to solvent extraction as compared with the ion-exchange and adsorption methods. Some studies about the application of solvent extraction have already been carried out using simulated spe11t electroless plating baths [1-3]."

"Mathematical process models can be applied in several different ways to serve industry by inducing beneficial changes to process operation. This paper attempts to summarize the different uses, types, and attributes of these models, and to offer some ideas to consider when developing, using, and reporting on them. Process models range from empirical to mechanistic in nature and vary in complexity from simple analytical solutions to coupled, 3-D transient numerical simulations. They are classified here according to the way in which they are implemented in practice, viz. fully-online models, semi-online models, off-line models, and literature models. The purpose of the model should dictate how choices are made during its development. Ways to validate and compare the model with experiments are suggested. Examples are taken in the context of the author's experience in modeling the continuous casting of steel.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to provide a partial introduction for this symposium by discussing some basic aspects of the application of mathematical process models in industry. Essentially, the aim is to explore how process models are used to benefit industry, and to offer some general comments and suggestions, based on the experience of the author, on how models can best meet this goal.This work is concerned with process models, which consist of systems of mathematical equations and constants that are solved on a computer to make quantitative predictions about some aspect(s) of the process. The specific variables required as input data and generated as output data are important features of the model. The equations often derive from a numerical solution to one or more differential equations and their boundary conditions. The model also includes the constants, which represent material properties, empirical relationships, and other knowledge about the process, and usually require considerable effort to obtain. Thus, general purpose commercial software packages, (ie. finite-element or finite-difference based codes), are not models in this context. They are useful tools, however, serving as frameworks for the development of process models."

"The method of producing magnesium-based composites with silicon carbide (SiC) particulates embedded in the matrix of magnesium AZ9I D alloy by the squeeze-casting technique are described. This method involves the fabrication of a SiC particulate preform and the subsequent squeezing of molten magnesium into the preform. In this study, alumina, aluminum phosphate and a proprietary binder were used for the fabrication of SiC particulate preforms. The procedures employed in the fabrication of SiC! AZ9ID composites are presented, together with the results of characterization of the composites using optical and transmission electron microscopy. Special attention is given to the reaction products in the bulk alloy and at the interfaces between SiC particles and the AZ9ID matrix alloy.1. IntroductionInterfacial, microstructural and metallurgical characteristics play an important role in determining the mechanical properties of a composite. In theory, reinforcing magnesium with SiC particulates should provide an improvement in strength and modulus of the composite over the unreinforced counterpart. However, many factors resulting from the fabrication process can cause degradation rather than improvements to the mechanical properties. In particular, the interfacial characteristics are known to critically influence the properties of composites [1]. Before evaluating the mechanical properties of a composite, it is always useful to examine the microstructure, which is closely related to the mechanical behavior. This helps to reduce the labor-intensive steps of sample preparation for mechanical property evaluation, which can be particularly difficult as a result of the high hardness of composite materials, as well as providing a wealth of information on the microstructural and interfacial characteristics, particularly the reaction products caused by processing. This information is also pertinent in understanding the factors governing the mechanical properties of the composites.There are many factors which determine the nature of the interfacial characteristics of a SiClMg composites. Qualitative estimations of the interfacial bonding have been performed based on thermodynamics, electronic and electrostatic concepts. In addition, the kinetic conditions during the fabrication play an important role. From an interfacial energy standpoint, the driving force for the formation of a metal/ceramic interface is the decrease in free energy that occurs when intimate contact is established between metal and ceramic surfaces. "Two types of slag cooling is used world wide - cooling in ladles and cooling in pits. The flotation comparison of the type cooling regimes was done at Aurubis Bulgaria. In Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria (Pirdop), the residual copper in the slags from Flash furnace and Converters is recovered by flotation. The slag flotation plant processes blend of three parts FSF and one part converter slag. The slag processing comprises: pit cooling, crushing, two stages grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. The copper content in flotation concentrate is over 20 % and in flotation tail is under 0.5 %. In order to improve the copper recovery, different cooling rate of the liquid slags should be achieved. Three cooling experiments with flash smelting furnace (FSF) slag have been done: two of them in pits with different volume and one cooling experiment in metallic ladle. The ambient air temperature during the cooling tests was from -4 to +4 OC. Laboratory flotation tests in open cycle were done with an aim to compare the slags behaviors cooled at different conditions. In this paper the effect of different cooling on the flotation process will be presented. The copper recovery and distribution by sizes in the tails, copper content in the rougher concentrate, and the concentrate yield are discussed."

"We present a parallel lattice Boltzmann - cellular automaton model of the two-dimensional dendritic growth during solidification of binary alloys. The model incorporates effects of solute and energy transport under melt convection. The parallel performance of the algorithm is assessed. A loss in the parallel efficiency is observed when multiple computational cores per processor are utilized. Excellent strong scaling up to thousands of computing cores is obtained across the nodes of a computer cluster, along with the near-perfect weak scaling up to forty thousand cores. The presented solidification model shows a good scalability up to centimeter size domains, including millions of dendrites.IntroductionLattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is an attractive numerical technique for solving fluid dynamics problems. Its advantages are simple formulation and locality, with locality facilitating parallel implementation. In the present model, interface kinetic is driven by the difference between local actual and local equilibrium liquid composition [1]. The cellular automaton (CA) technique is deployed to track the solid-liquid interface [2]. A serial version of the present LBM-CA model with a small number of dendrites was validated against theoretical and experimental results in the previous publications [3, 4]. In this work, it is the first time that simulations with millions of dendrites were performed, something not possible with the computationally much more costly phasefield method [5].This research effort examines a technique for simulations of millions of dendrites in centimeter size domains, including thermal, convection, and solute redistribution effects. Nearly ideal scaling properties of the model are demonstrated. This extensively large landmark was achieved because of• the CA technique being two orders of magnitude faster than alternative, phase-field methods [5]• highly parallelizable LBM method, convenient for simulations of flow within complex and time dependent boundaries• availability of the powerful NSF Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) supercomputing resources"

"SynopsisMining value chains are dynamic systems and should be managed according to systemic flow-based principles. This includes a detailed focus on the impact of variable geological conditions on material flow, product quality, and production cost, visibility of the total mining system to operators and managers, as well as the synchronization of resources and activities in downstream processes. Thirty mining operations across the African continent were studied to establish to what extent systemic flowbased principles are applied in day-to-day operations. The study indicated that although most mining operations have identified the relevant geoprocessing variables, only a small number apply this information in a flow-based management approach. Most mining operators do not focus on developing a clear flow view of the mining value chain and on making it visible to operators and managers to enable them to optimally set and reset operations. Daily synchronization of geoprocessing variables is limited to a small number of variables, e.g. synchronizing ore hardness with drilling or milling requirements, in less than 30% of the operations evaluated. Operations where these principles have been adopted reported a noteworthy improvement in performance. The study indicates that notable potential exists in most of the operations evaluated to implement flowbased management principles, including geometallurgical principles. This can significantly improve value chain performance without exorbitant capital layouts and enhance ROCE. IntroductionObjective of the studyThe study seeks to establish to what extent systemic flow-based principles have been adopted in the southern African mining industry and the implications thereof. Specific attention is given to the importance of defining and managing geoprocessing dependencies (geological variables directly impacting mining and plant performance – the geometallurgical approach), establishing a flow view of the mining system, which typically includes a dashboard of the flow of ore/product quality and cost from the mining face to the customer, and limiting the impact of dependencies through synchronization of activities and resources, e.g. ensuring that a continuous miner does not wait for a roofbolter, or that reagent addition rates are matched with a specific ore/concentrate composition."

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom's Dipex® extractant, P,P?-di(2-ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 10 6 Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

Scientifically known as sepiolite, it is represented by the formula Si12Mg8O30(OH)4(H2O)4(8H2O). Sepiolite is a natural clay mineral composed of hydrous magnesium silicate, characterized by a structure of alternating blocks and tunnels that develop in the direction of the fiber. Each structural block contains two silica tetrahedral sheets surrounding a central layer of magnesium oxide- hydroxide. Sepiolite exists in two distinct forms in nature: alpha-sepiolite and beta-sepiolite. Alpha- sepiolite is amorphous, compact, and resembles pellets that look like sea froth, hence its Turkish name Luletasi. In contrast, beta-sepiolite appears as amorphous aggregates or small, flat, round particles. These two forms exhibit different physical properties. Meerschaum was also studied by Brauner and Preisinger in 1958, who agreed that it primarily consists of sepiolite (2MgO·3SiO2·nH2O). According to these researchers, water is present in its mineral, zeolitic, crystal, and structural forms. Meerschaum is commonly used for adsorbing various liquids, as an ion exchanger, and for dispersing and insulating paraffin in the chemical industry (Gokdemir and Dogan, 2011). Sepiolite deposits of the meerschaum type are primarily found in Turkey, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. Alongside high-quality, low-density, and highly porous meerschaum, Somalia also has sedimentary sepiolite formations. The total reserves of these deposits are estimated at around 50–100 million tons (Sariiz and Isik, 1995). Meerschaum, also known as “white gold” or “sepiolite,” is a unique mineral highly prized for its lightness, heat- resistant properties, and ability to be carved into intricate designs. Found predominantly in Eskisehir, Turkiye, meerschaum mining and processing have become significant contributors to the local economy and cultural heritage. This paper explores the history, economic importance, mining practices, and environmental impacts of meerschaum mining in Eskisehir and discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. An ‘in-hole bolt corrosion coupon’ development by the project may have multiple benefits of: helping quantify any corrosivity classification system providing an in situ ground support corrosion monitoring tool for testing possible corrosion protection solutions.CITATION:Craig, P, Saydam, S, Hagan, P C, Hebblewhite, B, Vandermaat, D, Crosky, A and Elias, E, 2014. As U.S. mines go to greater depths, the high temperatures and humidities characteristic of such depths make it difficult to maintain a comfortable environment in working areas. Better techniques for cooling these deep working areas are needed. At the Homestake gold mine in South Dakota the Bureau of Mines has tested a water spray cooler inserted into the fresh air vent tube entering a warm stope. The cooler supplied more than 6 tons of refrigeration to the stope air, which dropped from an inlet temperature of 83° F dry bulb and 75° F wet bulb to 73.5° F dry bulb and 71.5° F wet bulb. These preliminary results show the water spray cooler to be a feasible concept. However, there is a need for substantial refinement and further testing, and work on the concept will be continued under contract to the Bureau.

During the last few years the New Lead Belt of Southeastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, MG. for about 35 miles. The ore occurs as replacement deposits in the Bonneterre lime- stone formation which is about 1000 ft below the surface. In most of the mines, enough water is produced to supply the milling requirements without any reuse. There are dry areas, however, and at least two mills must rely on water reclaimed from their tailings lake to augment the mine water. These mills have no choice but to utilize recycled mill water.

Some of the problems associated with the acid treatment of oil wells are related to the control of the composition of formation treating acid. One test usually made at the well site is the determination of the acid concentration. Heretofore, the concentration of the acid delivered to the well site usually has been interpreted from a hydrometer measurement of the specific gravity of the acid solution. Experience has shown that this indirect measurement of acid concentration can give erroneous results. More reliable results are, of course, obtainable by the titration method; however, this method is not easily adapted to well-site testing. To overcome these objections, a device was developed for use in the field which permits determination of the concentration of treating acid both quickly and accurately at the time of the acid treatment. Its purpose was three-fold, namely, to determine: (1) the concentration of the fresh treating acid, (2) the concentration of the spent acid returning from the well, and (3) the solubility of formation samples in treating acid. The device was designed to operate on the principle of the stoichiometric relation between the calcium carbonate—hydrochloric acid reaction and the carbon dioxide gas resulting from the reaction. By confining the carbon dioxide gas within a reaction cell of the type shown in Fig. 1, the pressure inside the cell is increased. Since the pressure is an indication of the quantity of carbon dioxide gas produced, it may be used to estimate the concentration of the acid, provided an excess of calcium carbonate is used. From information on the volume of the reaction cell, the volume of acid used, and the pressure and temperature of the gas after the completion of the reaction, the concentration of the treating acid may be computed. The reaction cell is essentially a pressure vessel equipped with a pressure gage, temperature indicator. pressure release valve, and a special sample holder. Plastic and metal construction makes the cell both rugged and acid-resistant. The sample holder is so designed that a sample of calcium carbonate (or sample of carbonate rock) can be dropped into the acid

This report describes the construction and testing of large (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) stopping and overcast structures in an oil shale mine. The work was undertaken to develop construction techniques and cost data, and to measure leakage rates on full scale structures in an oil shale mine. A design data base was developed by reviewing industry practice, oil shale industry plans, and technical literature. Alternate layouts for room and pillar mining were examined to find ways to reduce the size and number of ventilation control structures. Six full size stoppings and one overcast were built in the Colony Pilot Mine. Leakage rates were measured using both SF6 tracer gas techniques and the ?brattice window? method. The leakage was measured both before and after a full scale face blast. Blast air pressures were measured across two of the stoppings. Cost and leakage data were used to evaluate the projected overall performance of various combinations of the stoppings in a two-panel oil shale mine.

"This paper summarizes the main conclusions derived from twenty-two technical presentations made at the 1973 meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors. Results of two surveys with response from over seventy mines were reported on Canadian milling practice for water re-use and on elimination of cyanide from mill effluents. Water and solution recycle in Canadian mills were detailed for copper, copper-zinc, lead-zinc-copper, nickel-copper, iron and gold mines. Cyanide elimination from mill effluents was reported under current practice and under requirements for further treatment by various other processes. Three recent process equipment entries into Canadian mills have been the on-stream particle analyzer, the new gravity concentration tables for recovery of fine tin and other heavy minerals, and solution-jet slurry equipment for reclaiming ground ore from storage. The principles of operation of this equipment were described along with the practical limitations that were found in their application to mineral processing. Capital costs and milling cost reductions were shown in some operations. Computer control of flotation mill processing was a major item on the program. Four major mining companies outlined their mill process control strategy, computer programs and on-stream analysis equipment. Some capital costs and personnel changes were presented, together with gains in concentrate grade and mill recovery. Recent development work has shown the effect of the type of grinding and of aeration on the recovery of sulphide minerals in flotation. One mining company reported a significant depressing effect on copper sulphide flotation while floating ore ground with mild-steel balls; also, pyrite appeared to be activated in the subsequent zinc flotation step. One company with extensive experience in the application of aeration to copper sulphide flotation showed significant improvement to copper recovery by pre-aeration. Both the effects of grinding and aeration were subject to the constraints of the chemical condition of the ore pulp. The metallurgy of silver recovery by combination grinding - gravity treatment and of gold recovery from a complex gold-sulphide ore were reviewed in two papers on precious metals. The latter paper further described the recovery of gold from the Cottrell collectors and the final disposal of arsenic from the dust collectors."

As part of the first-order assessment of potential manganese nodule processing reject waste materials, the Bureau of Mines estimated the physical and chemical characteristics of reject waste materials that would be generated from each of five potential process flowsheets. These processes were chosen because of their economic and technical feasibility for first-generation nodule processing. A brief description of the five processes is given to show process inputs and outputs, The physical characteristics are predicted based on land-based laterite processing where applicable, and where no land-based analog exists, on the basis of process chemistry. The probable chemical characteristics such as element content and compound form are tabulated for each process for 16 elements: As, Ba, Be, Cd, Go, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn. These elements were chosen based on their presence on the toxic substance list of priority pollutants, EP toxicity criteria, and major and minor elements of economic importance (Co, Fe, Mn, and Mo). The Underground Injection Control program was promulgated in 1981 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Placement of mine waste backfill underground is considered underground injection under the provisions of this program. A major issue is whether mine waste that is regulated as a contaminant source on the surface should be disposed of underground. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to investigate the impacts of mine waste sandfill on the quality of ground water. Analyses of water samples collected before and after contact with sandfill in a 10-year-old stope, as well as samples of the sandfill itself, were used to ascertain the influence of the sandfill after mine closure and subsequent flooding. Computer models supported the hypothesis that oxidation of pyrite by oxygen, accompanied by dissolution of carbonates, was the predominant reaction controlling the quality of the water being discharged from the stope. Concentrations of metals released as a result of acid production remained near or below detection limits. Metals release after mine flooding is expected to remain low as a result of the buffering by the sandfill and the reduced rate of oxidation.

However, coal washing, the methods of which are highly Similar to the concentrating methods for ores, is in¬cluded In the work of the Nonmetallic Minerals Division to facilitate administration and to avoid duplication of equipment. During the fiscal year most of the work of the division was done at the experiment stations in College Park, Md., Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Seattle, Wash.
