Coal is an important fuel for energy generation, and since there are no adequate alternatives it will also be for the next decades. The deep lying hard coal is important in particular because of its high energy content. Automation of underground mining has led to major improvements in productivity and safety. A fully mechanized longwall shearer workface has already reached a high degree of automation and provides a high productivity for example utilizing the memory cut. Current researches and developments in longwall mining are focused on extending this method by adaptive cutting drum height adjustment. The so-called horizon control is often based on memory cut methods. Horizon control in this way requires information of the environment, which can be provided by models (seam model, cut model) and coal interface detection (CID). Available CID systems only provide an optimal output under specific conditions. The authors propose the shield-data-based horizon control (SDHC) system as an alternative approach. SDHC does not require information from a CID system or an environmental model. All necessary information is provided by roof supports, shearer and process monitoring. The SDHC system was tested in simulation under different seam conditions and yielded promising results which will be presented in this paper. In cooperation with the German mining company RAG the SDHC has already reached an experimental stage. A test assembly was built up at the surface and the SDHC system was implemented on real mining equipment. To make the test scenario as realistic as possible, the SDHC system was only connected to the monitoring system, not to the simulation model. The aim of these tests was to establish the cooperation between all subsystems, find appropriate controller parameters, locate and address safety critical aspects and finally to achieve an automatic cutting drum height adjustment. An introduction of SDHC for shearer guidance is given in this paper. The experimental tests are described and the control results of the realized SDHC system on the test assembly are shown.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. "The Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeM) comminution index (CI) was developed as part of the AMIRA P843 GeMIII project. Drill core geochemistry samples were passed through a Boyd Crusher with standardised settings and the resulting particle size distribution (PSD) was measured using sieves.Disadvantages of the original measurement were the relatively coarse crush size, requiring a second pass of crushing for geochemical sample preparation, and the limitation of throughput caused by the sieving step. At Antamina, the measurement has been modified to use a 2.2 mm crusher size setting, which permits a single pass. The PSD is measured using a Camsizer, an automated optical sizing instrument. The Camsizer sample is a +180 µm fraction, used to avoid passing too many fines through the instrument and slowing down the measurement. In the sieving step, the weights of the two fractions are recorded and subsequently used to normalise the distribution measured by the Camsizer. In this way, the throughput of the Camsizer can match that of the Boyd Crusher. The PSD data are therefore measured without penalising the throughput of the sample laboratory.The normalised PSD distributions are used to derive modified CI parameters, based on the slope and intercept of the breakage product size distribution, which are indirect measures of the material breakage hardness.Fifty samples were selected as a training set, each sample a composite of five or six individual assay intervals and each with its own measured CI. The average PSDs were calculated for the composites and used to calculate a composite CI. The intact half of the core, approximately 40 kg, was tested to measure the BWi, A*b and crushability. The results were used to develop predictive algorithms for these hardness parameters.A further 50 composites were chosen for lab testing, to serve as a blind test of the algorithms. THE following brief description of the status of operations of the Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata, Chile; and of the plant as it exists today, points out the-great progress that has been made since the initiation of prospect drilling in 1912. During the 11 years which have elapsed since then, a group of small mines, eking out a 'precarious existence, has been consolidated into one large operating property,, taking high rank among the world's producers of copper. After a drilling campaign followed by a construction period, the plant first started operations in 1915. Since then production has been gradually increased, as world conditions permitted, until the present status has been reached.

This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator's seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.

Cuando se diseña y operan minas de carbón subterráneas con el método de cámaras y pilares, es siempre difícil obtener un buen equilibrio entre la prevención de subsidencia de la superficie y la obtención de un alto coeficiente de recuperación. En este trabajo se propone una metodología de diseño aplicando la teoría de arco de presión y se detallan los principios y modelos matemáticos involucrados. Se desarrolló un programa de computadora a fin de realizar el proceso de optimización del diseño y fue aplicado a la examinación de un caso documentado en el que había sucedido una falla masiva de un pilar en cascada sobre un área grande en una mina de carbón poco profunda. Los resultados indican que el método de diseño propuesto puede ser aplicado para prevenir la subsidencia y a la vez obtener un alto coeficiente de recuperación para operaciones mineras de cámara y pilares.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. "The SGS carbon-in-pulp (CIP) / carbon-in-leach (CIL) model was used to evaluate and optimize the carbon circuit at Alamos Gold’s Young-Davidson Mine. Plants samples (pulp and carbon) were tested in a series of small scale batch experiments to determine rates of gold leaching and adsorption on carbon from a combined flotation concentrate/tailing product. The testwork data, along with existing plant data were then used to model the performance of the existing CIL plant and optimize the circuit to improve performance and overall recovery. The primary purpose of the modelling exercise was to determine the most cost effective way to lower solution losses at the plant. The modelling was also used to learn how the various parameters in the CIL circuit affect solution losses and the gold inventory tied up on the carbon. This resulted in recommendations for minor changes in the CIL flowsheet, which were successfully implemented in the plant. The approach, results and plant changes are presented.INTRODUCTION This paper presents the details from testwork conducted on samples from Alamos Gold’s Young- Davidson gold mine which is located near the town of Matachewan, approximately 60 km west of Kirkland Lake in Northern Ontario, within the southwestern part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The objective of the test program (completed by SGS Canada in 2013) was to investigate and model the combined flotation concentrate / tailing carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit and suggest ways to improve gold recovery. The metallurgical test program included mineralogy, rheology, and carbon modelling testwork. Plant information was provided during the test program and used in the optimization process. Upon completion of the testwork, plant changes were recommended and implemented at site (October 2014). Plant results from 2014 to 2017 confirmed the modelling results."

The Artillery Peak manganese ores , from one of the largest known manganese deposits in the United States , present a difficult problem in concentration because they are low-grade and the association of manganese and gangue minerals is intimate and complex. The known size of this deposit has justified investigation of processes such as leaching, wherein preliminary enrichment of the original feed might be advantageous .. Therefore , the ore-dressing studies on Artillery Peak ores were carried on with the object not only of making directly marketable manganese products but also of removing acid-consuming calcite and raising the grade of ore for leachingplant feed . Owing to the extent of the deposits , test work was carried on at the Salt Lake laboratories in considerable detail on several lots of ore of varying composition . This paper summarizes the results obtained from laboratory testing of four samples obtained by engineers of the Mining Branch from the Maggie Canyon area of the Artillery Peak deposit . Also included are results obtained from testing one sample of Chapin Group ore , which was considered representative of numerous very low-grade ores submitted from the Artillery Peak district . During the course of the investigations , many data were obtained and compiled , but for the sake of brevity , data of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed and only those tests giving the more pertinent results are discussed in detail ...

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans released copper from -400-mesh chalcopyrite at a rate of 54 mg/I/hr. Any flotation chemicals remaining on the concentrate did not inhibit the leach rate. Zinc rougher tailings were also leachable. With bacteria, 75 per cent of the zinc and 68 per cent of the copper came into solution. In the sterile controls, only 16 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the copper were released; 100 per cent of the copper and 36 per cent of the zinc were leached from pyrite cinders through the action of bacteria, and 17 per cent of the copper and 10 per cent of the zinc were solubilized in the sterile controls. Less than 0.027 per cent of ~he iron came into solution. The majority of the copper in a converter slag was acid-soluble, but a reverberatory slag responded to microbiological leaching. About 62 per cent of the copper came into solution, compared to 12 per cent in the sterile control. The various factors influencing the rate and extent of microbiological leaching are discussed.

The Hornsilver lead-zinc property was examined by the Bureau in 1942 and again in 1944. A project was started on the property in April 1946 and completed in January 1947. Silver was first discovered in this district in 1883, and while complete production records are not available, it is known that a substantial tonnage of high-grade silver ore was shipped before 1887. All of the ore was mined from surface or near-surface workings. When the high-grade oxidized ore was exhausted, the district became inactive and remained so until the 1920's. In 1928 and 1929 some activity was shown in the district, but the Hornsilver mine was not reopened until November 1937. Between 1939 and 1946, the mine produced about 16,000 tons of ore of 531 ounces of gold, 283 ounces of silver, over a million pounds of load, and nerdy 2 million pounds of zinc. The property is now controlled by the Era Mining & Development Co., which has acquired the Last Chance and Ella groups of claims, in addition to the Hornsilver mine.

IT appears that in the earlier days of anthracite coal mining, 1824-25, the Lehigh region mined 76 per cent. of all the coal sent to market. During the same period Wyoming sent 12 and 5 per cent. respectively, whilst the Schuylkill sent 11 and 18 per cent., the number of tons marketed being in those days very small indeed. In the year 1828 the Schuylkill region mined over one-half of all the coal sent to market, and continued to do so for thirty years (with the exception of the year 1831), until 1858 ; since that date the pro¬duction has declined very steadily in comparison with the other regions, until, in 1876, it was only 34 per cent. Wyoming, in the year 1820, was mining 40 per cent., but the production of all the regions was very small ; in six years it declined to 5 per cent., increased to 34 per cent. in 1831, declined to 10 per cent. in 1838. Since which time the increase has been gradual, until 1873-75 Wyoming produced over 50 per cent. of all the anthracite coal sent to market. In 1867 the production exceeded that of Schuylkill, and has continued to do so since that time. In the year 1876, during the existence of the " coal combination," Wyoming lost 9 per cent. ; during the same time Lehigh gained 7 and Schuylkill 2 per cent. over their relative production of the preceding year, the decrease of Wyoming being two and a half million tons, the increase of the Lehigh one million, the decrease of the Schuylkill nearly three-quarters of a million. The extraordinary production of the Lehigh region at a time of decreased demand and in opposition to an agreement with the other regions to limit the supply to the supposed demand was the cause of the disagreement which ultimately broke up the combination of the great coal-producing and carrying companies. The selection of a suitable nitrate removal process depends on a variety of site-specific chemical and environmental issues. The dominant technologies for nitrate removal include biological denitrification and continuous countercurrent ion exchange. The decision to apply either of these technologies, or both together, depends on the nature of the waste water to be treated. Factors that affect the selection of the biological system include the feed composition and feed temperature. Ion exchange nitrate removal systems are less sensitive to the feed composition but require disposal or destruction of the concentrated pregnant eluate. The paper discusses Tetra's continuous countercurrent ion exchange technology (CCIXTM) and fixed film biological reactor, Denite°. The treatment of the ion exchange pregnant eluant is also discussed.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. Coal Water Mixtures (CWMs) are densed suspensions of coal particles in water. Viscosity is one of the most important rheological properties of CWMs and it is desired to be as low as possible. The slurry viscosity was influenced significantly by additive formation, the particle size distribution and the ash content of the coal. However, the influence of dispersants is most obvious. At present, there are several kinds of dispersants such as polymeric styrene sulfuric sodium, lignin sulfonate, humate, polycarboxy salt, ethylene epoxide surfactant. In this paper, a newly synthesized CWM dispersant has been reported, which is an efficient anionic surfactants of polycarboxylic acid type. The synthesis process includes three steps. At the beginning, the polyglycol acetate ester has been performed by acetic acid and polyethylene glycol (PEO) on the condition of acetic-acid/PEO ratio 1:1.1, at 368~373K for 30 minutes. Then the macro-monomer is prepared through the esterification of 85.71% acrylic and 14.29% polyglycol acetate ester, at 368~373K for 10 minutes. After that, the polycarboxylic acid CWM dispersant is polymerized using proper proportion macro-monomer, acrylic (AA) and sulfonic styrol sodium, at 368~373K for 1 hour. This new dispersants are used in the coal water mixtures formulation. Four kinds of coal used in the experiment are Shuang Yashan, Tunliu, Luning, Changcun samples. ? The highest concentration for shuanyashan coal is 70% when the dosage of dispersant is 0.4%, and the content of -200 meshes particles is 75.53%. As the dosage of dispersant de-creases to 0.25%, the Shangyashan CWM concentration is 67%. ? For Tunliu coal CWM concentrations are in the range of 76% to 75% when dosage of the dispersant changes from 0.4% to 0.25% at the same particle size distribution of 83.5% minus 200 meshes. ? The highest concentration for Luning coal is 69% when dosage of the dispersant is 0.4%, and the content of -200 meshes particles is 88.86%. ? For Changcun sample, the coal concentration of CWM is 73%~75% when dosage range of the dispersant is 0.35%~0.5%. The experiments show that the synthesied dispersant is quite promising for some coals CWM preparation, but a little bit coal-dependent. The Proximate and Ultimate analysis, surface characteristic measurement have been made to investigate the interactions between coal and additives.

In its work on mineral wastes the Bureau of Mines is studying losses in the melting of nonferrous metals and alloys. The greatest of these losses is that of zinc through volatilization in brass melting, but another and considerable loss is that of aluminum and its alloys in the melting of finely divided material. In order to get some idea of the magnitude of the loss in melting aluminum scrap and to find out what methods of melting were used information was gathered in regard to present practice; also experiments were conducted to obtain some data on the relative merits of different methods. As the experiments could be made on a laboratory scale only, they were not expected to solve the problem entirely, the object in making them being rather-by indicating which methods were of greater promise-to narrow the field over which largescale tests and comparisons need be made by those commercially nterested in the problem of melting scrap aluminum.

At least three hydroelectric tunnels constructed during the last decade through the lower Himalayan region in India have met with serious problems of supporting in squeezing ground conditions. Steel ribs under went intolerable deformations requiring rectification to provide space for concrete lining which delayed the projects inordinately. In an attempt to choose a rational method of predicting rock load, the authors have compared rock loads estimated from various classification systems and elasto-plastic theory with observed values. The deficiencies of the classification systems have been highlighted to show that the combination of elastoplastic theory and tunnel instrumentation programme provides better guidelines for the design of tunnel supports in squeezing ground conditions.
