Mill length was the primary variable investigated in an autogenous pilot mill circuit. The 5-1/2' diameter mill had both pebble ports and 1/2" wide slotted grates. The plus 1/2" mill product was crushed in a cone crusher and returned to the mill feed along with the minus 1/2" plus 4 or 6 mesh fraction. Tests were run with a short mill, inside length of 26-3/8", or diameter-to-length ratio of 2.50 to 1. The same mill was then lengthened to 48-3/8", diameter-to-length ratio of 1.36 to 1. The effect of mill length on circuit product characteristics was studied. Results show that (1) circuit throughput or grinding rate is lower per foot of mill length in the longer mill, (2) the long mill product is finer than the short mill product, and (3) KWH per ton of circuit product is slightly higher with the longer mill; however, KWH per ton of minus 200 mesh material (finer fraction) produced is essentially the same in the long mill as the short mill, It is not known whether the relationships found for the pilot mill are valid for commercial size mills.

"The University of California’s new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive will showcase a collection of art and film in a facility that pairs an existing 1930s-era printing press facility with a new, architecturally unique auditorium wing. The centerpiece of this adaptive-reuse project is the existing 3- story art-deco Administrative Building, which will be integrated into the new museum and provide approximately 18,000 square feet of usable space. Degenkolb Engineers, as the shoring engineer of record, along with Condon Johnson & Associates Inc., the shoring contractor, worked together with general contractor Plant Construction Company to design and build a temporary structure to facilitate the complex retrofit, renovation, and expansion of the Admin Building. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by the design and construction team, the sustainable solutions implemented on the project, and the collaboration between teams to meet the unique constraints of the project and the site.INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT BACKGROUNDThe Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), which currently resides in a 1970s-era post-modern concrete structure just south of the University of California Berkeley (UCB) campus, was in need of a new home after an engineering evaluation revealed that the building possessed seismic deficiencies. "The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County Wyo., and is favorably nituated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities.Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small treed and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.The deposits lie upon land owned by Wyoming, now leased by a group of Wyoming and Colorado businessman constituting the Copper King Mining Co.Primary copper-gold mineralization seems largely confined to an equigranular, relatively fine grained gneiss that is part of a pre-Cambrian complex of metamorphic rocks ranging from schists to pegmatites. The copper minerals are oxidized to a depth of from 100 to 150 feet, with the occasional occurrence of secondary minerals at greater depths. The copper minerals chalcopyrite, malachite, chalcocite, bornite, cuprite(?), and some native copper were observed in Le deposit.In addition to the 4,030 feet of diamond-core drilling in 11 holes done on the deposit by private companies, the Bureau of Mines drilled 3 holes for a total of 2,630 feet. The sample results of this drilling plus available data from previous drilling and sampling are appended to this report."

Mexican silver mining operations have existed prior to the sixteenth century. Recovery processes throughout the centuries were developed at the many mining localities and have progressed through smelting, the patio amalgamation process to cyanidation and flotation. A study of the present silver mining zones is reported in which the ores are evaluated in terms of the mineralogical constituents, their state in the matrix and the effects these are noted to impose upon the efficiency of recovery. Silver mineral identifications were by quantitative ore microscopic and scanning electron microscopic energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

"This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder (community) analysis using discrete choice theory (DCT). The work considered 16 project attributes and four demographic factors. The discrete choice experiment was conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah to illustrate the usefulness of DCT in mining stakeholder analysis. The data was used in discrete choice modeling of individual preferences. The approach answers three important questions for enhanced stakeholder analysis: (1) What are the factors that affect individual preferences? (2) What is the effect of demographics on individual preferences? (3) What is the value of environmental and social impacts to individuals in the community? INTRODUCTION Stakeholder analysis is crucial for effective stakeholder engagement because it is important to identify and characterize stakeholders in order to effectively engage in dialogue with them. This is not only true for all stakeholders but true for characterizing the members of a particular stakeholder. The local community is usually the largest and most diverse single stakeholder group. Also, the local community is perhaps the most important stakeholder group. Thus, analysis of the local community is essential for project management. Conventional mining stakeholder analysis is a three-step process, which involves evaluating: (1) each stakeholder’s view of the project (positive, neutral, or negative); (2) how influential each stakeholder is (high, medium, or low); and (3) how they will be impacted by the project (high, medium, or low) (ICMM, 2012). The results of this evaluation are documented in a stakeholder analysis matrix (Table 1), which is used to classify the stakeholders into three groups: highly influential supporter of the project, neutral about the project, and highly influential opponent of the project. This process can be used to describe groups of stakeholders (e.g. community, non-governmental organizations, etc.) or individuals making up a particular stakeholder group (e.g. members of the local community)."

"A limestone mine in Ohio has had roof instability problems that have led to massive roof falls extending to the surface. This paper describes a collaborative study of these events undertaken by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the mine owners. The study focuses on the roles that weak, moisture-sensitive floor and weak bands in pillars play in a general instability that led to roof falls at this mine. The NIOSH Stone Mine Pillar Design software (S-Pillar) does not include analysis for weak floor or weak bands and recommends that when such issues arise they should be investigated further using a more advanced analysis. It is important to recognize that without the impact of the floor or weak bands, the calculated inherent stability factor for these pillars is within the recommended design range. Therefore, to further investigate the observed instability occurring on a large scale at the Ohio mine, FLAC3D numerical models were employed to help determine the failure mechanism. Roof-to-floor extensometers were also installed in the areas predicted to have further instability. This case study will provide important information to limestone mine operators regarding the impact of weak floor causing the potential for roof collapse, pillar failure, and subsequent subsidence of the ground surface. This recent case demonstrates that weak floor can be a significant factor in pillar stability and should be assessed during the design stage of the mine.To an area-wide failure (Zipf, 2001). In that case, it appears that the pillars had actually remained intact. However, moisture-related yield of the weak floor caused deformations which passed through pillars and into the roof, triggering roof collapse around the intact pillars (Esterhuizen et al., 2011). This previous case and the case presented in this study, while not identical, both demonstrate that weak floor and/or bands within pillars can be a significant factor leading to instability."

ABSTRACT Stope backfilling is a common operation in many underground mines, which requires a barricade at the base of the stope near the drift entrance to retain the backfill in place. In this paper, the distribution of pore-water pressure in barricades made of waste rock is analyzed. An analytical solution is introduced and applied to estimate the pore-water pressure along the base and full height of the barricade. Results show that the analytical solution generally accurately predicts the distribution of pore-water pressure obtained from the numerical calculations, especially in the upstream part of the barricade, where it is most critical.

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

Nickel and cobalt in lateritic ores can be extracted by either a hydrometallurgical or a pyrometallurgical route. The high-iron limonitic fraction of a deposit is best processed' hydrometallurgically while the magnesium-rich transitional and saprolitic fractions are more suited for pyrometallurgical processing. During hydrometallurgical processing, it may be attractive, for economic reasons, to blend the limonitic component with transitional and saprolitic ores, which contain higher nickel levels. However, blending increases the concentration of magnesium in the feed, leading to increased acid demands. The decision on how much ore to process then becomes an economic one. Ore samples with different magnesium contents were prepared for the leach test program by blending limonitic and transitional ores. The ore samples were slurried in seawater and tested in the Falconbridge Hydrometallurgical Pilot Plant. As expected, acid consumption increased with increasing magnesium content of the ore. For target extractions of 95% nickel and 92% cobalt, the required residual free acid concentration increased from 30 g/L at 1.7% magnesium to 50 g/L at 2.7% magnesium. When the magnesium content was raised to 3.8% and 4.6% in subsequent pilot plant testing, the final free acid requirements did not increase beyond what was observed at 2.7% magnesium. Thus, the cut-off ore composition to maximize nickel units and minimize acid requirements is between 1.7- 2.7% magnesium. Keywords: high pressure acid leaching, laterites, magnesium

In order to comply with time limitations imposed by this symposium, a very narrow but nonetheless interesting segment of the market has been chosen for discussion of the preparation of a tailor-made product to meet a specific need, and in view of the fact that the barite market is one of the oldest and one of the broadest non-metallic mineral markets in the world, it is necessary that we place this in perspective. Of a recent world annual production; (i.e., 1966 figures released last year in MINERALS YEARBOOK), of some four million tons, the United States consumed over 1/2 million tons, of which approximately 950,000 tons were produced domestically and approximately 700,000 tons were imported. Of this total, something approaching 90% was used for drilling-mud weighting, and of the balance, all but about 60,000 tone is consumed in the production of glass, barium chemicals, aggregates, and other minor uses; thus we are really taking a look at a very minute, however important, and very selective, portion of the total barite-market. The real meat of this paper, after eliminating all irrelevant uses of barite, and delineating the area of discussion, resolves itself into the approach to a favorable marketing area and a specific attack on that area. Cost, to the user, has been, patently, a function of distance, as the basic price of barite has varied very little over the years until recently, and freight rates have been the governing factor. Conversely, the seller of barytes must make concession in the plant price to compensate for distance, if he is to successfully compete.

Low levels of thallium were detected in the mine water drainages, and process water discharges of western mining and smelting operations. This required remediation under state regulatory standards, which allow discharges of no more than .0017 ppm thallium in mine water discharges. Influent streams containing thallium can be mitigated to state discharge standards after a single pass through the series of fluidized upflow columns. Test work to determine the optimal flow rates used pilot scale systems at two separate locations treating 5 - 25 gpm of effluent. The test system at the gold mine mimics the full-scale system, which will be based on the existing upflow carbon tanks that have been converted to zeolite columns. The system installed at ASARCO's East Helena smelter has a far more complex influent stream with a high loading of competing cations. Nevertheless the columns filled with CABSORB® are successfully mitigating the thallium contamination. CABSORB® ZS500RW is a product based on the sodium analog of the zeolite mineral chabazite named herschelite.

The Bagdad solvent extraction plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird SX-EW plant near Miami, AZ. The current operation still resembles its original form, with four independent sections that run in parallel with each consisting of many long and narrow settlers. Through its 40-year history, the Bagdad SX circuit has experienced a range of pregnant leach solution flows and grades. The unique design of the Bagdad circuit has allowed for numerous configuration changes to accommodate the changing operational conditions, while maintaining an extraction recognized in the industry as excellent.

"Fatigue and corrosion fatigue measurements were carried out on five commercially available metals -four steels and an aluminum alloy -which are used as structural materials in mine shaft conveyances. In the corrosion fatigue measurements, drain waters collected in the shafts of three different Canadian mines were used as corrodents. The mine waters had been selected on the basis of their relatively large differences in acidity and/ or composition.It was found that the corrosion fatigue strengths of the four steels were similar, despite their differences in tensile properties, and that the type of water used in the tests had little effect on the results. Mild steel showed the highest and most consistent values of the damage ratio (ratio between the corrosion fatigue and the plain fatigue strengths at 107 cycles). The corrosion fatigue behaviour of the aluminum alloy (ASTM Type 6061-T6) was found to differ markedly in the three mine waters. A high damage ratio (i.e., superior performance) was shown in a mine water in which the corrosion attack was uniform; much lower damage ratios were shown in waters which produced localized corrosion attack. Corrosion rates were too low to be deter-mined conveniently by conventional weight-loss methods, but calculations from polarization curves provided a rapid demonstration that corrosion rates were distinctly lower in the mine water which produced high damage ratios."

INTRODUCTION Situated 23 miles east of Pretoria the Premier Mine started diamond production in 1903. Two years later it produced the largest diamond yet discovered, the 3 106 carat Cullinan stone. For the period to 1932 when the mine was closed down due to economic circumstances, open cast mining was practised using inclined rope haulage traction and by this time had produced 48.5 million carats of predominantly industrial quality diamonds from 148 million tons of ore. In 1945 it was decided to re-open the mine using underground mining methods. A system using long hole benching was devised (Hodgson and Sewel 1960). This system was later modified but still forms the basis for approximately fifty percent of production. Following the successful introduction of block caving on associated diamond mines in the Kimberley area (Gallagher and Loftus 1960) this mining method was introduced to the Premier Mine in the late 60's and now accounts for nearly 50% of production. This paper will discuss block caving at Premier Mine in the light of our experience and discussion will be directed to the main geological and structural features of the orebody and host rocks and the related constraints imposed on the mining methods. Reference is made to the long hole benching mining method for comparative purposes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS The ore from the block caving and bench mining areas gravitates via ore passes to a twin haulage, 500m below surface. Electric 13 tonne locomotives, each hauling a train of 10 Granby type cars, deliver the ore to two 42" x 48" (1.06m x 1.22m) jaw crushers. The ore is reduced in size to minus 0.15m before being hoisted to the treatment plant on surface. Hoisting is done with 12.5 tonne bottom discharge skips in a five compartment rectangular shaft using two 3 240 H.P. semi automatic Ward Leonard winders. A small single drum service winder operates in the other compartment. Men and materials travel in a separate shaft in a 5,4m x 2,8m cage operated by a Koepi winder. These two shafts are also the main intake airways to the mine. The two main extraction fans capable of 250 m3/s at 3,2 kPa are situated on surface and are connected to the underground workings by an incline and a network of air passes and return airways. GEOLOGY Although there are numerous occurrences of kimberlite bodies in the district, the Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is the only economic orebody. It is roughly oval in shape with surface dimensions of 900m on the long axis and 450monthe short axis. The surface area is 320 000 m2. The kimberlite has intruded a massive body of felsite and norite which is intersected by a number of faults. The contact between the kimberlite and host rock is clear cut and dips inward at an average angle of 80°. Cutting across the pipe and the country rock is a 75 metre thick gabbro sill, the top of which intersects the pipe below the 347m level and dips at 15' to the north west. The kimberlite has been metamorphosed a distance of some 20m both above and below the sill contacts. Age measurements on biotite from the gabbro date the sill as 1 115 million years, thereby providing a minimum age of the pipe. (Pre Cambrian). All other pipes in South Africa are of Cretaceous age (60 million years). A simplified geological plan and section of the Premier Mine orebody is shown in Figure 1. It is thought that the kimberlite intruded in at least three distinct phases. The kimberlites of these different phases can be distinguished most easily by their characteristic colour. BROWN KIMBERLITE. This is the oldest kimberlite and forms a crescent shape in plan on the south eastern side of the pipe. In depth it increases in relative area. Although the brown kimberlite carries the highest diamond grade in terms of carats per ton all the various kimberlites in the Premier pipe are economic to mine.

AMAX Coal Company, the nation's third largest coal producer operating in Indiana, Illinois and Wyoming, is a division of AMAX, INC., a United States based natural resources corporation that operates world wide. The operations in Wyoming (The Western Division) include Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte Mines. Belle Ayr Mine, located 18 miles south of Gillette, Wyoming, presently employs 440 people. It was started into production in 1973 and has been the largest producing coal mine in the United States since 1977. Final figures will show that the mine was again the largest in 1980 with production levels of approximately 16.1 million tons, total production of coal in the United States being in excess of 800 million tons during this last year. As one of the first commercial producers of sub-bituminous coal in the Powder River Basin, Belle Ayr has served as an example for the many other mines which have since been constructed in that region. The four coal storage silos are the first and most dominant features of the mine to be seen for miles across the Wyoming prairie. Each silo has the capacity to load a 110-car unit train in excess of 11,000 tons. All service facilities at the mine are under one roof. Included in the service building are off ices, warehousing, seven garage bays, and washhouse facilities for all employees. Preparation of coal for shipping at Belle Ayr consists only of crushing from pit-run size to 2 x 0-in. Primary crushing is done under the truck hoppers to 6-8-in. product size. Turner Valley is in the foothills of the Rocky mountains, at an altitude of 4,000 feet, and is 42 miles south west of Calgary. The present producing area is 8 miles long by 1 1/2 miles wide, while drilling is being carried on over an area of 10 miles by 2 miles . There are 32 wells producing, 26 wells drilling, and 17 wells shut down, making a total of 75 wells, which range in depth from 2,160 feet to 5,900 feet, varying according toa the well location on the anticline centre wells being shallower than those located on the flank. The first indication of possible production in this field was a gas seepage on the banks of Sheep river, in what is now the Royalite plant yard (Figure 1). Geologically, this seepage proved to be located on an anticline running through the valley in a southwesterly direction. The Calgary Petroleum Products Company was formed in 1912, and under the direction of Mr. A. W. Dingman, President, and associates, the first well was drilled. Production was obtained in this well. Gas was found in several horizons from 884 feet to 3,960 feet, and oil at 1,557, 2,718 and 3,839 feet. In May, 1914, oil was struck at a depth of 3,839 feet, this being a light straw-coloured oil of 60 gravity, which was blown spraying from the well accompanied by three to four million feet of gas. The latter contained some 200 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft., giving it the disagreeable odour so well known in Turner Valley gas. This strike caused considerable excitement and started the famous 1914 boom, when some 400 oil companies were formed. The well referred to produced from two to five barrels of 60 gravity oil per day, and 4,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. The oil was used in the crude form in cars and trucks.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating hydrometallurgical processing techniques to recycle metals from semiconductors and other advanced materials. Cadmium and tellurium were recovered from mixed CdTe/CdS scrap produced in the manufacture of thin-film photovoltaic devices. Selective cadmium dissolution was achieved using oxygen-pressure leaching in dilute sulfuric acid. Leaching the scrap for 90 min at 110° C in 2.2NH2S04 under 400 psig 02 yielded 97% Cd extraction; however, cadmium content of the residue ranged between 4% and 7%. Soluble iron was added to the lixiviant to catalyze oxidation of the CdS component. Tellurium and sulfur remained in the leach residue primarily in the elemental form. The iron and tellurium were removed from the cadmium-rich leach liquor by adjusting the pH to 5.3. The cadmium was recovered as cadmium sulfate crystals by evaporating the solution. Alternative leaching and purification schemes are discussed.

In this research, two grades of alumina, one at nominally 85% composition and the other at 99.5% were characterized. Microstructural and phase characterization was conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, and micro-computed X-ray tomography. It was determined that the Knoop hardness values were influenced by the porosity in the 85% composition. Quasi-static compressive tests and high strain rate compression experiments were conducted to determine the influence of the microstructure to the compressive properties. It was observed that the overall compressive strengths increased with strain rate. Although the Knoop hardness values were much lower in the 85% alumina due to the porosity, the compressive strength at both quasi-static and dynamic strain rates were not significantl lower than those of the 99.5% composition.
