No complete work on explosives, their constitution and analysis, has hitherto been published. Several books that contain chapte.r;s on analysis do not cover the matter thoroughly. Methods tha;t, manu~ facturers, testing stations, and other . agencies have developed to meet their own requirements have not been made public. The Bureau of Mines has issued four publications 1 - cov:eri:ng special phases of the subject. This bulletin. is not inte.nded to replace those reports, but rather to cover present methods employed 'in the , industry and to include all classes of explosives and the materials used in their manufacture. No sharp distinctions can be drawn between classes of explosives. . Surplus military explosives, for example, may be used for blasting, just as blasting explosives, under some conditions, may be employed for military purposes. Moreover, one class gradually merges into another because of similarity in composition. Explosives are here grouped as dynamites, black powders, propellants, detonators, and primers. Some materials are used in practically all these groups ; others in only one. To discuss all the materials that have been or that may be used and the methods for their identification and quantitative determination is not feasible, but the methods described will probably suggest ways of examining new mixtures.

PREVIOUS study' of simple impact systems indicated that energy required for fracture and size reduction of brittle materials is greatly dependent on the type of loading that is employed. In this regard it was postulated that fracture and size reduction of a brittle specimen might be accomplished by a high velocity impact at an energy level at which a low velocity impact would leave the specimen relatively undamaged. The finite time required to propagate energy away from the point of loading of an impacted object to other parts of the object and to its supports may permit a concentration of energy at the point of impact if the rate of loading is high. Localizing of energy at the point of impact could quickly initiate fractures that would propagate through the impacted material along with the traveling stress waves. As the cracks form, the initially absorbed strain energy would be released and portions of it travel ahead of the wack tips as stress waves. These secondary stress waves, combined with the initial stress waves derived from the impact, would produce high localized strain conditions in front of the fracture zone. The fracture zone would propagate and the specimen shatter. High rates of loading are brought about by short impact times, in turn obtained by employing high velocity projectiles that are of small mass compared to the impacted object. Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.

"Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FMI) commissioned the expansion of the Morenci Metcalf concentrator in 2014. The concentrator included many design and equipment innovations, including the first-of-its-kind Metso Hydraulic Roll Crusher (HRC), variable speed ball mills and variable speed crushers. In addition to the innovative design, FMI commissioned the Metso APC team to design a realistic process simulator and the plant APC. The process simulator was utilized to train operators before commissioning, which led to a smoother plant start up. The plant APC utilized the concept of dynamic constraint control, which controls the feed to the primary ball mills by “pulling” the tons from crushed rock storage bins, which then automatically are filled by the upstream HRC and secondary crushing circuits. The primary ball-mill control also adjusts the water addition to the cyclone clusters to avoid overload and achieve sufficient grind size. The constraints include in-circuit constraints for feeder capacity, screen-deck capacity, ball mill power, cyclone mass flow, pump capacity and pump motor capacity. The APC system was implemented shortly after the start of commissioning and immediately demonstrated increased throughput and an ability to highlight and quantify process constraints and bottlenecks. The following paper outlines the control strategy, discusses system implementation, results and challenges.INTRODUCTION The FMI Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci Arizona on the site of the old original Concentrator. The new Metcalf concentrator started operation in May of 2014. This plant was designed for an average of 63,500 tpd (70,000 stpd), increasing the total Morenci concentrator complex production to a nominal 113,400 tpd (125,000 stpd). The process flow diagram is shown below in Figure 1.The process consists of primary crushing feeding a coarse ore stockpile followed by secondary crushing operating in closed circuit with vibrating screen decks. The screen undersize feeds the first of its kind Metso hydraulic roll crusher (HRC) operating in a closed circuit with vibrating screens. The primary crusher is a Metso 60x110 gyratory crusher. Secondary crushers are Metso MP1250 Crushers with variable speed drives. Secondary crusher discharge is recycled to the dry screen feed bin and screened with oversize returning to secondary crushing and undersize feeding the Metso HRC3000. The product from the 3.0 meter X 2.0 meter roll crusher is wet screened with the undersize feeding the grinding circuit, which is comprised of two each 24-foot diameter by 40- foot-long variable speed ball mills running in parallel with each in closed circuit with a cyclone bank of 12 cyclones. The wet screen oversize is recycled to the HRC feed bin."

A recycling concept of end-of-life televisions starting with shredding will produce a complex material mixture, very heterogeneous in size, shape and degree of liberation. Basically all materials in television scrap are valuable, which means that recovery is important for either economic, environmental or sustainability reasons. However glass, plastics and metals are the materials with the highest potential for recovery. Non-magnetic materials from shredded television sets can be separated into three characteristic size fractions that need further separation for a high value-added recycling of the materials. This study investigated the potential of physical separation of these size fractions into valuable material streams using polyseparator, tlrldy current separator, dry and wet shaking tables and electrostatic separator. An overall mass balance of the mechanically processed televisions was calculated. Evaluation of the produced material fractions showed that heterogeneity in particle shape and size together with the presence of unliberated materials caused sever difficulties in separation when exclusively based on mechanical techniques. The results indicate that a certain degree of dismantling is necessary to achieve products of appropriate quality in physical separation. In order to improve recycling of electronic scrap through design for recycling cooperation between the electronics industry, the manufacturers and the recyclers of electronic goods is necessary.

Nas últimas décadas, as fibras naturais têm sido investigadas como uma alternativa para a utilização de fibras sintéticas, como material de reforço, tais como fibras de vidro. Algumas vantagens das fibras naturais são a menor densidade, biodegradabilidade e o fato de virem de fontes renováveis. Com o intuito de melhorar ainda mais as propriedades de compósitos de fibras naturais, investiga-se o desempenho de compósitos reforçados com tecidos de fibras naturais, uma vez que estes proporcionam um reforço multidirecional e permite a introdução de uma maior fração de volume de tecido. Neste trabalho, investigou-se a resistência à tração dos compósitos com matriz de poliéster reforçados com diferentes frações de volume de tecido de rami, que é uma das mais lignocelulósicas mais resistentes. Os espécimes foram testados em uma máquina universal de ensaios Instron. Os resultados mostraram um aumento na resistência à tração com o aumento da fração de volume de tecido.

produce attractive and consequently more salable products. It would seem, however, that if solder and babbitt were cast in closed molds, just as good practical results would be obtained by the user, without his being able to give preference to solders of unnecessarily higher grade on account of their appearance. It would be hopeless for any one. manufacturer of solder to undertake a change of this kind, but if all manufacturers of solder agreed upon it, they would be able, in my opinion, to get the users of solder to take, and to approve by their practical tests, metals containing less tin than they have been accustomed to. The same is true with regard to babbitt metals. An illustration of how, in the use of an alloy, appearance sometimes is deceptive, is to be found in the case of what may be called intermediate grades of babbitt. I am thoroughly convinced that high-tin or high-lead babbitts are better than those containing both lead and tin with relatively high percentages of each. A high-tin babbitt should not contain more than about 10 per cent. of lead, and a high-lead babbitt should not contain more than 10 per cent. of tin, unless the percentage of antimony can be correspondingly increased. The intermediate babbitts, such as those that contain from 30 to 70 per cent. of lead or tin, may give nice appearing castings that flow easily, but they have not the serviceability of the high-lead or high-tin babbitts. Their hardness diminishes very rapidly as the temperature rises, and they have a relatively low softening point due to the eutectic components present. The Cadmium Supply of the united States* C. E. C.—From being one of the most maligned of metals—a veritable bugaboo—cadmium has almost overnight become respectable, though its slender claim to respectability rests almost wholly on the possibility of its substitution for tin. Preliminary to any campaign for such substitution, particularly for enforced substitution, the possible supply of cadmium should be determined as closely as possible; for that reason the statistical inquiry of which this paper embodies the results was undertaken. Production Cadmium is marketed in two forms, as metallic cadmium, in sticks or bars, and as cadmium sulfide, the pigment. The metal has found its greatest field of use in this country as a component of an easily fusible alloy that is used in automatic fire extinguishers. The Bureau of Mines investigated the kinetics of reduction of wustite and magnetite with carbon monoxide. A mechanism was postulated wherein the interaction between gaseous and absorbed carbon monoxide appears to be the rate-determining process. This mechanism fully accounts for the experimental rate equation JL.h relates th velocity of reduction to the pressure of the reducing gas at constant temperature. It also explains the variability of the heat of activation of the reduction process with the state of aggregation of the oxide material. The integrated rate equation is in perfect agreement with the experimental reduction-time curves.

Copper is one of the trace minerals essential to life. It is added, usually in the form of copper sulfate, to virtually all formulated feedstuffs and to dietary supplements fed to animals on forage. Over the past five years, an improved inorganic copper source trademarked Micronutrients TBCC™, has been developed, tested and commercially introduced. TBCC is a crystalline form of basic copper chloride. Synthesis is accomplished in a continuous neutralization I crystallization process. In current commercial production, the primary sources of copper currently used as feedstocks are the etching solutions used to manufacture electronic printed wiring boards. These solutions have traditionally been managed as hazardous wastes, but their use to manufacture TBCC™ exempts them from regulation as wastes under the "Use/Reuse" provisions of RCRA. Research conducted over five years at multiple universities has shown that animals are healthier when fed this source of copper and that vitamin losses in feed are reduced by its use.

The author discusses some economic conditions which have made the career of the cast-iron pipe industry in the United States a checkered one. He next describes the two new developements in the manufacture of cast-iron pipe-both along the lines of centrifugal casting. The advantages and disadvantages of both processes are presented in some detail. Finally, statistics on the production of pipe in the United States at the present time are given, as well as the plants-and their capacities-so far as these are situated in the South. No SINGLE branch of the foundry industry has been brought to a production basis of huge tonnage, low manufacturing cost, and producing material of a remarkably high quality, as has the making of cast-iron pipe. The pipe shop is an excellent illustration of the fact that repetition work in specialties leads to mechanical equipment and manipulation that lower production costs to an. astonishing degree. Hence cast-iron pipe, in dull times, has been sold at a few dollars a ton over the selling price of the pig iron used. On the other hand, these same pipe, shops make fittings .of many varieties, and in much smaller quantities, where the cost is high, and when pipe may be sold, say, at $50 a ton, the fittings on the same shipment will be sold for nearly double that price. The history of pipe-making, in the United States, is a checkered one the mortality of plants is high and, from the nature of the industry, plants must be large to live. In spite of the fact that the best processes must be used to turn out this rather strict specification material, pipe is easy to make and a pipe plant is more of a tonnage mill than the really high-class specialty foundry it should be. Every time, therefore, that the demand for pipe is strong new shops spring up, only to close when the demand has ceased, but the financial damage to the more permanent plants has been done. Both the South and the North have had abundant experiences of this kind, and when recently a northern Public Service Corporation gave its order to France, the pipe plants thus adversely affected were content to have this occur rather than see-a plant started to supply the surplus demand.

This study puts forward a virtual memory cutting method based on the prediction of AFC shape. The integrated key technologies include the generation of virtual teaching cutting curve, the height adjustment strategy of front and rear drum, cutting height adjustment strategy, the reciprocating cycle of cutting technology and so on. Through the two algorithms, SVM and ELM, the form of the next working cycle can be obtained by rolling prediction using the form information of AFC in the first several circulations. Based on the obtained dynamic fluctuation of the form in the vertical and horizontal working faces, the position and cutting information of the shearer during its operation can be controlled and predicted in advance, the memory cutting template can be adjusted and modified in time. Employing this method, the more stable, accurate and timely memory cutting of the shearer under the uneven coal seam could be realized.

OLIP-line observations on copper alloys, using the electron microscope, have been made by a number of workers,13 but this work has been confined to a brass. In a CuAl alloys Koppenaal4 and Koppenaal and Fine5 have made observations with the optical microscope and by the use of interferometry. They found that the observed slip step heights inside the Liiders bands accounted for only 42 pet of the total macroscopic strain. The suggestion was put forward that optically unresolvable slip in other parts of the specimen accounted for a major part of the macroscopic strain. This is surprising since it is known from other workers that slip in a brass is inhomogeneous; i.e., large amounts of slip occur on individual {lll) closelys paced than being shared by a large number of closely spaced planes. Furthermore, a brass and a CuAl alloys with high concentration of aluminum exhibit similar deformation characteristics and slip-line patterns. Prior to investigations into the behavior of copper and a CuAl alloys under reversed stresses in tension and compression, some preliminary experiments have yielded results which the authors think resolve this discrepancy, and throw some further light on the behavior of a CuAl in tension. An experiment was carried out on a 10 at. pet CuAl single crystal, of gage length 7.5 cm, diameter 3.1 mm, and orientation shown in Fig. 3 (inset), for the purpose of resolving the above discrepancy. The specimen gage length was electropolished for 10 min in a 50:50 orthophosphoric acid (SG=1.75)-distilled water system, with 2 v across the cell and a current density of 0.5 amp per sq cm. The cathode was made of copper. After a tensile strain of 0.067 ± 0.001, intense slip was observed over a length 2 cm of the gage length whilst the rest of the specimen was relatively undeformed. In the lightly deformed region, slip bands of mean width 20 /x were spaced about 1 mm apart on average. The transition from the heavily slipped region (usually called a Liiders band) to the lightly deformed region was gradual, the slip-band density increasing as the "Liiders band" was approached. In the latter, the slip bands became so close together that, to the naked eye, the specimen appeared to be continously slipped, and the typical microtopography of this region is shown in Fig. 1. Twelve electron micrographs were taken at random from replicas of the Liiders-band region, and the widths of the slip lines were measured. The slip lines account for an over-all tensile deformation of 7.0 ± 0.7 pet, after allowing for the lengths of the un-slipped regions, which is in good agreement with the macroscopic strain. The distribution of slip-line widths was also measured and is shown in Fig. 3. Since Koppenaal could not resolve slip lines with height less than 540A (limit of resolution represented by dashed line), then it was deduced that he could have measured only about 50 pet of the deformation within the 'Liiders Band'. It is concluded, contrary to the suggestion of Koppenaal,5 that virtually all the macroscopic strain is accommodated within the "Luders band" and that there is no need to invoke fine slip distributed uniformly over the gage length.

"Cigar Lake high-grade uranium mine in Saskatchewan is operating after 25 years of test mining, construction, and mine flood remediation. Factors include ground stability, groundwater control, radiation exposure, and ore handling. A 10 year test program resulted in validating “jet boring”, a non-entry mining method involving artificially freezing the orebody and surrounding rock; tunnelling to develop access crosscuts below the orebody; installing cased pilot holes through ore; extracting ore using rotating high-pressure water jets within pilot holes; and cavity concrete backfilling. Ore slurry is prepared underground, pumped to surface, and trucked to McClean Lake mill for processing to uranium concentrate.RÉSUMÉ Après 25 années d’essais sur les méthodes minières, de construction et d’assainissement suivant les inondations à la mine, l’exploitation de minerai à haute teneur en uranium Cigar Lake, localisée dans la province de la Saskatchewan, est opérationnelle. Les principales difficultés concernent la stabilité du terrain, le contrôle des eaux souterraines, l’exposition aux rayonnements et la manutention du minerai. The operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation, AREVA Resources Canada Inc., Idemitsu Canada Resources Ltd., and TEPCO Resources Inc. Cameco has been the operator of Cigar Lake since January 2002. The discovery hole was drilled in 1981. Commercial production was declared in May 2015 and the Phase 1 operation will have a mine life of 15 years."

This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp's Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

This study compares wet gravity and dry magnetic separation for preconcentrating an allanite-rich rare earth ore from the Halleck Creek deposit. Material in the –300/+86 μm size range was treated to define a flowsheet that maximizes total rare earth oxide (TREO) recovery. The ore is dominated by feldspar and quartz, with hastingsite, an iron-bearing aluminosilicate. Because hastingsite’s density and magnetic response closely match allanite, it is difficult to reject using conventional methods. Two separation approaches were evaluated: MG12 spirals for gravity concentration and an Induced Roll Magnetic Separator (IRMS) for dry magnetic upgrading. MG12 spirals performed well in the rougher stage but provided limited gains when used as cleaners. When IRMS was applied as the cleaner stage, TREO grade and recovery improved substantially, showing that a dry magnetic cleaner circuit can effectively replace the wet gravity cleaner step. MG12 spirals remain suitable for highcapacity rougher duty, but dry magnetic separation delivers higher selectivity, simpler operation, and eliminates water use—offering a more efficient and sustainable preconcentration route in water-constrained environments.

Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

A case study of a systematic approach to grinding circuit steady-state optimization is presented. After an overall review of the flow-sheet, two operating circuits were prepared for detailed testing. Functional performance analysis was chosen as the primary modeling system, and, on this basis, a quality-assurance program for data gathering was implemented. A number of circuit-design and operating variables were investigated. Statistical analysis of plant-test results revealed relationships previously unquantifiable by any other modeling technique. Improvements in the classification system and in mill grinding efficiencies were demonstrated. As a result, there was significant energy cost savings.
